OSU archer competes in South Korea By BRANDON HAVENS Staff Reporter Full-time students have more than enough to juggle. Between class, homework and exams, not to mention a social life, there just doesn’t seem to be enough time. But for one Oklahoma State University student, there’s even less. Stillwater native and sophomore Psychology major Brogan Williams is not only a full-time student, but she is also an esteemed archer. Competing in archery competitions year-round, Williams competes at the elite level of the sport. Representing OSU and the United States in every competition she partakes in, she has often gone up against some of the best archers across the world. Williams’ life resembles a juggling act as she is making grades, working and winning competitions all at the same time. “It’s tough, I don’t think it’s unmanageable, it’s just learning how I can manage it and also working on it,” Williams said. “We’re very dedicated.” Williams recently re-

turned from Gwangju City, South Korea, where she represented the U.S. in the Compound Archery World Games as a member of the U.S. collegiate team. Individually, Williams placed 9th and the USA Women’s Compound Archery Team won silver. The World University Games are similar to the Olympic games in that they are held every two years and the athletes stay in an athletic village. “The competition was a little bit tougher than we

thought it would be because every country brought their best shooters,” Williams said. “There were a lot of the Olympic shooters that were there competing,

ing archery when she was young and attended an archery camp. She then fell in love with the sport and decided to begin competing. After years of experi-

and it was really cool to be shooting next to them.” Getting to her current level was not an easy task. Williams began practic-

ence, Williams’ hard work and talent proved enough to represent her home country in world competitions. Williams has been

involved with the Archery Shooters Association, Junior Olympic Archery Development, National Field Archery Association and the Oklahoma State Archery Association. “The archery community is super supportive,” Williams said. This support was seen when Williams’ mother was battling cancer, and the archery community donated money for Williams and her coach to travel to Nebraska to compete. Her recent appearance in

South Korea was a combination of the support from the archery community and the talent she has acquired from years of practice. Williams was able to compete in Gwangju City after she qualified at a competition in Los Angeles earlier this year. Williams may be travelling the world, but she never forgets where she came from. Williams and the rest of the OSU archery team show off America’s brightest orange wherever and whenever they can. “It’s really pretty cool to represent OSU at the shoots,” Williams said. “We really stood out in the orange. We wore bright orange and it was awesome.” Williams hopes to make a career out of archery. Currently, there aren’t any compound archery events held in the Olympics. Williams hopes this will change, possibly as soon as the 2020 Games. Representing the U.S. on the biggest stage in the world is a dream of hers, and winning gold is always what she strives for. “Anything can happen,” Williams said. “We’ll see.” news@ocolly.com

‘Tis the season for blockbusters Review: summer 2014 vs. summer 2015 movie lineups By BRANDON SCHMITZ Depending on one’s perspective, 2015’s summer movie season is either near the end of its run or ever-soslightly beyond it. Regardless, it seems appropriate to turn back the clock and look at how this year’s releases stack up to 2014’s. Let’s take a monthby-month look, yeah? Admittedly, the term “summer movie season” itself has become somewhat loose in recent years. In the case of the past two especially, one could argue that the blockbuster season kicked off as early as April. “Captain America: Winter Soldier” and “Furious 7” were definitely heavy hitters for 2014 and 2015, respectively. Considering that the rest of April featured relatively minor releases, let’s start off with the following month. It wouldn’t be the first week of May without a superhero flick. Although “The Amazing Spider-Man 2” provided fun chemistry between its two leads, it bit off more than it could chew. In a mad dash to capitalize on the cinematic universe craze, the film attempted to cram two films worth of content into one. May 2014 boasted another superhero film, one whose quality still hasn’t been matched. Director Bryan Singer returned to the “XMen” series in full force with “Days of Future Past.” Along with its expertly handled ensemble, the film’s heavy themes elevated it above most of its genre.

“...and the less said about ‘Transformers: Age of Extinction,’ the better.”

Unfortunately, “X-Men” was that month’s only standout. Although many people responded well to “Neighbors,” I couldn’t get behind much of the referential humor. “Godzilla” was a blast when we see the king of monsters himself in action, but the film spent far too much time with stock, human characters. And though the film featured a strong performance from Angelina Jolie, “Maleficent” failed to capitalize on its opportunity to tell a villainous origin story. Meanwhile, Marvel brought the goods this past May with “Avengers: Age of Ultron.” Not only is the banter among earth’s mightiest heroes as snappy as ever, but it’s also relieving to see that Loki isn’t Marvel’s only memorable cinematic baddie. “Mad Max: Fury Road”

WARNER BROS.

‘Fury Road’ brought a niche franchise into the 2015 mainstream.

did the impossible: it got me excited about car chases. Set in one of cinema’s most breathtaking wastelands, the film’s stylized action offers the perfect blend of practical and digital effects. “Fury Road” also understands that context is crucial when it comes to action films. Sadly, the rest of this past May wasn’t as stellar. Audiences and critics alike slammed “Hot Pursuit,” “Tomorrowland” is a significant

step down from otherwise masterful director Brad Bird, and “San Andreas” makes the apocalypse seem boring despite Dwayne Johnson’s charisma. June 2014 was a mixed bag. Considering its disastrous marketing campaign, “Edge of Tomorrow’s” unique tone surprised just about everyone. “22 Jump Street” delivered, too, with its riff on the nature of sequels.

O’COLLY

Speaking of sequels, “How to Train Your Dragon 2” took cues from “Empire Strikes Back.” Not only did the film take its characters to unexpectedly harsh places, but it also expanded its mythology in interesting ways. “Jersey Boys” offered no legitimate case for why a big screen adaptation of the stage musical was needed. Oh, and the less said about “Transformers: Age of Extinction,” the better. This past June may not have boasted as many great films as 2014’s, but it also didn’t contain as many duds. “Spy” is an entertaining lampoon of James Bond, while “Jurassic World” is a fun, yet all-too-familiar, adventure. Meanwhile, “Ted 2” offers just enough laughs to keep it afloat. It’s a mostly solid lineup, not great, but solid. Aside from “Inside Out,” that is. Not only is Pixar’s latest my

favorite film of the year so far, but it also trumps each of the films from 2014’s summer movie season. July 2014 may have featured only one notable release, but man, was it one heck of a film. Although 2011’s “Rise of the Planet of the Apes” reinvigorated the dead franchise, last year’s “Dawn” did everything a sequel should. The apes themselves were the stars of the film, providing the audience with a better sense of their culture. The movie’s pervasive sense of moral ambiguity is refreshing, while the motion-capture technology on display has no equal. Admittedly, I can’t speak for this month’s major releases, if only because I haven’t seen them all. Similarly to last year though, this July hasn’t exactly been off to a terrific start. Despite the talented team behind it, “Terminator Genisys” fails to redeem the dwindling franchise. Marvel, meanwhile, made its first blunder since “Thor: The Dark World,” which coincidentally shares a director with “Genisys,” with “AntMan.” Thankfully though, a misstep for them is a film that’s still, albeit barely, passable. But this month still has a potential ace up its sleeve. “Mission: Impossible -Rogue Nation” hits theaters this weekend, coming off the success of 2011’s excellent “Ghost Protocol.” Fingers crossed, right? digital.ed@ocolly.com PAGE 4

Tulsa Shock find new grounding By KAID KINZIE Sports Reporter Oklahoma will soon have only one professional basketball team, as the WNBA has officially approved the relocation of the Tulsa Shock for the 2016 season. The Shock will be moving to Arlington, Texas, after relocating to Tulsa in 2010. This will be the franchise’s second relocation since 1998. Several years ago, the team began as the Detroit Shock and enjoyed a great run of success in Motor City. The Shock won three WNBA titles and also reached the postseason for seven consecutive seasons from 2003 to 2009. However, when the team relocated to Tulsa, success became harder to clench for the franchise. The Shock missed out on the postseason for five straight years and has yet to treat Tulsa to a playoff berth. The move to the DallasFort Worth area makes sense and will likely pay off greatly for the organization. The Shock boasted the second worst attendance rating in the WNBA last year with only the Atlanta Dream averaging lower. The Dallas-Fort Worth area is undeniably one of the largest mass media markets in the country right now. Exposure for the team and the WNBA should grow significantly, and higher attendance will hopefully follow. Majority owner Bill Cameron announced his plans to move the team to Texas shortly after the vote came out that approved

at College Park Center located on the campus of the University of Texas at Arlington. College Park Center opened up back in 2012 and has a seating capacity of 7,000. Tulsa Shock fans will have the chance to support their team again once the second half of their season resumes on July 30 when they face off against the Phoenix Mercury in Tulsa. Even with the news of relocation looming over the team and resuming the season with a 10-8 record, Williams and the rest of the Shock have a chance to treat Tulsa fans to a first and final playoff experience before departing. the decision. Cameron listed several reasons explaining his motive to relocate, including a large group of corporate sponsors, the chance to play in a top-five media market and accessibility to a larger fan base. Former Shock coach and Hall of Famer Nancy Lieberman, who also spent last season as an analyst for the Oklahoma City Thunder’s pre and postgame show called Thunder Live, did not hold back on expressing her excitement for the relocation of the team. “I think it’s going to be absolutely phenomenal,” Lieberman told a source from DallasNews.com. “This is big news and I hope the city gives it so much support.” WNBA president Laurel J. Richie had nothing but

appreciation and kind words regarding the Tulsa area after the move was unanimously approved. “The WNBA is extremely grateful to the city of Tulsa and the team’s loyal fans. The support they have shown for the Shock and women’s professional basketball over the past six seasons has been tremendous,” Richie said. “We look forward to having our first team based in the Dallas-Forth Worth area.” Shock head coach Fred Williams was quoted saying that he was not surprised by the news of the move. He received a phone call from Bill Cameron just briefly before the news broke publically. Williams is currently halfway through his second season in Tulsa.
