Have a blast this Fourth of July

By BRANDON HAVENS Staff Reporter Stars, stripes and smiles will shine at Stillwater’s annual Boomer Blast celebration. This Independence Day, the city of Stillwater will hold the Chickasaw Boomer Blast at Boomer Lake Park.

The Chickasaw Boomer Blast is an annual Fourth of July celebration at Boomer Lake that includes familyfriendly attractions, food trucks and a fireworks show.

Residents of Stillwater and surrounding areas enjoy the Blast every year.

This year’s celebration is officially titled the Chickasaw Boomer Blast because Chickasaw Telecommunications Services, a Stillwaterbased business, is the title sponsor for the event, donating $5,000 toward the cost of fireworks.

“The fireworks are 100 percent sponsored by local businesses, which shows the connection that local companies have to support a great event,” Stillwater Recreational Supervisor, Rachel Janway, said.

Sponsorships are nothing new to the event. Last year, more than $18,000 was donated from residents and local businesses to keep the celebration a tradition for attendees to enjoy. The donations also allow for free admission into the event.

For years, residents have enjoyed the Boomer Blast and everything it brings to the community. Palvih Bhana, a Stillwater resident of seven years, has attended the Boomer Blast every year.

and surrounding areas to watch fireworks together,” Bhana said. “People are friendly and it’s nice to be with the community. My favorite part about Boomer Blast is being with my friends and celebrating.”

To start the day off is the 18th annual Family Fishing Tournament. Registration for the tournament begins at 5:30 a.m. at Boomer Lake’s south boat ramp. There is a

$15 entry fee for each team, which can have up to four family members each. There are both boat and non-boat categories. The tournament will start at 6 a.m. and will finish with 11 a.m. weighins.

In addition to the fishing tournament and fireworks, there will be a variety of food trucks and free inflatables for guests to enjoy.

This year’s Blast will offer

more options for residents to enjoy than ever before.

The Chickasaw Boomer Blast will host a variety of family-friendly attractions for guests to enjoy, including the all new Touch-atruck.

“Touch-a-truck is the chance for kids and adults to see different work trucks used in the field. They will be able to sit in them, honk the horn and interact with

the employees,” Janway said.

“This is a fun experience for all.”

Mayor Gina Noble sees the Boomer Blast as something more than just a Fourth of July celebration. She sees it as a staple of the community.

“Boomer Blast brings a sense of pride to our residents because it’s a Stillwater tradition,” Noble said. “My favorite thing is the sense

of community this event provides. It’s so nice to see so many happy Stillwater faces in one location.”

The Chickasaw Boomer Blast is a shining example of Stillwater’s motto, “Still Pioneering.” Stillwater is home to about 50,000 residents and aims to provide the best community and service for them all.

The city of Stillwater’s website states, “while our tagline ‘Still pioneering’ may be new, we have always worked with this motto as we strive to deliver services and value to our citizens.”

A celebration for the nation’s birthday that includes food, family and fireworks accomplishes this goal completely.

If weather prohibits the fireworks show, it will either be rescheduled for July 5 or delayed until sometime later this fall.

Admission is free and families are encouraged to bring blankets and chairs to the show. Fireworks will begin at 9:35 p.m. on Saturday, and parking lots near Boomer Lake Park will open at 6:30 p.m.

Get to the lake before dusk for plenty of family-friendly activities and attractions.

Q&A with students: Tuition increase

By RYAN PARKER & LUKE SPENCER Co-Editor-in-Chiefs

The OSU/A&M Board of Regents recently approved the proposed Fiscal Year 2016 operating budget of $1.3 billion.

Its validation there represents the first step in the approval process. The upcoming year’s proposed budget includes increases in tuition costs and fees universitywide.

We interviewed four random students about what they thought of the recent news.

‘What is your first impression of a possible tuition increase?’

“I mean, my first question is ‘why?’ I understand the budget is laid out here but I’m still wondering why? I care because one day I want to send my kids to college, so it does affect me still in a way, but I am curious because I’m sure there’s a reason for it.”

“Well, I’m an OLAP kid so my tuition is paid for, but I think it’s really bad for other students that are here because we already pay enough in tuition and fees.”

“It’s not necesarily fair, but there’s no changing the school’s mind about it. They’re going to do what they want to do.”

‘Why did you choose to come to OSU? Was cost a factor?’

“Compared to other universities, OSU was a little bit cheaper than others but it’s still a lot for me.”

“It’s a lot different (in-state vs. out-of-state costs), like two times more than instate tuition, but I came here so I need to accept the rules.”

“Well, my family lives close to here and I had some friends coming here. I just came and visited and really liked the campus. Then, I got a scholarship right before my high school graduation that paid for my tuition so I decided to come to OSU.” “No, I wouldn’t have been able to go here without the scholarship, so if I had to pay the full tuition I wouldn’t be going here.”

Fresh talent brings new promise

By KAID KINZIE Sports Reporter On June 25, the 2015 NBA Draft was held in New York City at the Barclays Center.

Excitement and hype had been building up all week, with many speculating over who the overall No. 1 pick would be. Much like the NFL Draft, the first pick was up in the air and debated.

The Minnesota Timberwolves held the first selection spot, with the Los Angeles Lakers, Philadelphia 76ers, and the New York Knicks following.

NBA Commissioner Adam Silver stepped up to the podium and announced the first overall pick of the draft: Karl-Anthony Towns. A 6’11” center from the University of Kentucky, Towns is a player with tremendous talent and a lot of potential.

He averaged 10.3 points per game last year, along with 6.7 rebounds per game and 2.3 blocks per game.

With Towns being chosen at No. 1, Kentucky became the first school in NBA Draft history to have three players chosen first overall. The other two No. 1 picks from Kentucky are Anthony Davis and John Wall, two current

NBA superstars.

Towns also became the sixth consecutive freshman to be drafted No. 1. Out of the last nine drafts, a freshman has been chosen first eight of those times.

The Timberwolves now have the two most recent No. 1 picks on their roster with Towns and Andrew Wiggins.

However, finishing with the worst record in the NBA last season at 16-66, Minnesota still has a lot of work to do.

Soon after Towns saw his dreams become a reality, the Los Angeles Lakers selected D’Angelo Russell with the No. 2 overall pick. Russell played point guard at Ohio State University and averaged 19.3 points per game, 5.7 rebounds per game and 5.0 assists per game on 49 percent shooting.

The Lakers finished with their worst record in franchise history, 21-61. In D’Angelo Russell, the Lakers drafted a player with spectacular court vision that can see every angle of the game and create his own shot anywhere. Both an excellent scorer and efficient passer, the Lakers will be hoping they have found their guard for the future in Russell.

This year’s top draft prospects from around the globe line up for a picture before the big night.

With the No. 3 pick in the draft, the Philadelphia 76ers chose freshman Jahlil Okafor from Duke University.

Standing at 6’11” and weighing in at 270 pounds, Okafor is a towering and tough post player.

However, the Sixers seemed to choose the best player available at their pick instead of searching for a player to even out their roster. With current big man Nerlens Noel and after drafting Joel Embiid last year, the Sixers have three interior big men who can’t play together.

Regardless, Embiid continues to have setbacks with his health, and Okafor is a

terrific player with an incredible skill set and offensive capabilities.

With the draft being held in New York City, Knicks fans arrived in large quantities to see whom their team

would select at No. 4. Several fans ended up voicing their displeasure, however, with loud booing after the Knicks selected Kristaps Porzingis from Latvia.

While Porzingis was not

widely considered to be a high quality draft prospect, he does have potential. Even with a skinny build for a power forward, Porzingis stands at 7’1” and could make other players face a serious size mismatch.

The Knicks definitely took a small risk with this draft pick, but Porzingis has plenty of talent to develop into a great player in the future.

This move seemed to be more of a long-term solution hope for the Knicks.

Here in Oklahoma, most NBA fans were sitting and waiting for the No. 14 overall pick in the draft, which belonged to the Oklahoma City Thunder.

The first two “Terminator” films stand as action movie benchmarks. It’s difficult to argue which one has had a more profound effect on the genre, but my money’s on No. 2.

Its monster-movie thrills, exceptional stunt work, groundbreaking special effects, and memorable characters help it stand alongside “The Matrix” and “Die Hard” as one of the most influential action flicks.

However, similarly to the past couple of films I’ve discussed on this weekly preview feature, the series’ latest faces an uphill battle.

Considering the lukewarm reception of “Terminator 3” and “Salvation,” the franchise is definitely in need of rejuvenation. “Terminator Genisys” (you’ve got me on the misspelling) hits theaters today.

Director Alan Taylor (“Game of Thrones,” “Thor: The Dark World”) brings us what sounds like a hybrid of the first two films.

Years into the machines’ war against humanity, John Connor (Jason Clarke) sends Sgt. Kyle Reese (Jai Courtney) back to the ‘80s to protect not only Connor’s mother, Sarah (Emilia Clarke), but also the future.

Reese’s trip through time creates some unintended consequences. This fractured timeline features an unfamiliar version of the past, one with an unexpected ally in the Guardian Terminator (Arnold Schwarzenegger).

experienced Sarah Connor joins the fight, too. Together, the three have an opportunity to stop the Terminators from rising in the first place.

Admittedly, I can’t say how this film fits into “Terminator” canon, for I haven’t seen it yet. But based on the synopsis, it may take cues from “Star Trek’s” 2009 pseudo-reboot. The events of the previous films may have still happened, but in a separate timeline.

Considering how convoluted the series’ mythos became by the time “Salvation” hit, a reintroduction of sorts may be necessary.

That said, I hope to see “Genisys” bring enough new elements to the table to stand on its own. A few callback lines here and there are fine, but I worry that the film will be overtly selfreferential.

Additionally, I hope to see more of what Taylor brought to “Game of Thrones” and less of what he did with the second “Thor”

movie. The latter relied too heavily on obnoxious comic relief; hopefully, that was just a bad day at the office.

If nothing else, then the film boasts a strong cast. I’m excited to see what Emilia Clarke can do beyond her role in “Thrones.” Jason Clarke is quietly becoming one of my favorite actors working today, and J.K. Simmons elevates whatever movie he’s in.

Plus, the movie will feature a non-CGI Schwarzenegger.
