Dear OC Marathon Participants:
As the Mayor of the great City of Costa Mesa, it is my honor to welcome all the participants to The City of the Arts and thank you for taking part in the annual Hoag OC Marathon Running Festival
I would like to offer my congratulations to the organizers of the OC Marathon for celebrating 20 exciting years of this event, 15 of them right here in our city This is one of my favorite events of the year, and I look forward to being there in person once again.
This year’s registration numbers are the largest in the event’s history with more than 25,000 adults and children including 600 from Costa Mesa in the marathon and 300+ children from Costa Mesa in the Kids Run the OC. This year, runners from 48 states and 25 countries are represented As these athletes run here in the OC, we encourage them to discover just why Costa Mesa is great
We live up to our City of the Arts motto with venues like the Segerstrom Center for the Arts, the Renee and Henry Segerstrom Concert Hall, the South Coast Repertory Theater and the Orange County Museum of the Arts. If you are hungry after your run or walk, our restaurants are the best in the county with two of them earning coveted Michelin Star designations.
Costa Mesa is rich in open space with 32 parks where you can have a picnic or play pickleball, or take a stroll through natural surroundings and wildlife views that can be found in our Fairview and Canyon parks
Finally, our proximity to the ocean and beaches allows us to enjoy near perfect weather, and spring in Costa Mesa is an especially wonderful time of year I am sure you will agree with me that Costa Mesa is a great place to live, work, shop and visit.
Thank you and good luck.

As the Hoag OC Marathon wraps up another successful event, Hoag’s nationally recognized physicians remind runners of the importance of rest and recovery in their post-race regimen As the proud sponsor of the Hoag OC Marathon, Hoag offers comprehensive services to support runners' health needs.
So, what is one expert opinion they like to share with all runners? Take a rest day.
“Rest allows the body to repair, rebuild, and recharge leading to improved performance,” said Dr. Paiyuam Asnaashari, D.O., with Hoag Medical Group Sports Medicine. “Athletes often focus on training harder and pushing their limits – but equally important is rest and recovery ”
Dr. Asnaashari also provides additional tips to help runners recover effectively.
The Importance of Rest Days: Rest days are crucial for runners to allow their bodies to recover from the intense physical demands of the marathon These rest days give muscles time to repair and rebuild, reducing the risk of overuse injuries and preventing burnout.
Recommended Sleep Duration: Adequate sleep is essential for optimal recovery and overall health Runners should prioritize establishing a consistent sleep schedule to support their body's healing processes.
Light Workouts: While rest days are important, runners don't necessarily need to be completely inactive. Light workouts or active recovery sessions can be beneficial to promote blood flow, reduce muscle stiffness, and enhance overall recovery Consider activities like yoga, swimming, gentle stretching, or a leisurely bike ride.
Listen to Your Body: Pay attention to signs of fatigue, soreness, or decreased performance, as these may indicate the need for additional rest or recovery. It's important to modify training plans or take extra rest days when needed to prevent overtraining and injury.
Mental Rest: In addition to physical rest, runners should prioritize mental rest and relaxation. Incorporating mindfulness practices, such as meditation or deep breathing exercises, can help manage stress levels and promote overall well-being.
For more tips on post-marathon recovery, runners can schedule an appointment with Hoag Medical Group’s Sports Medicine physicians at HoagMedicalGroup.com.

This award cements Kia’s standing as the frontrunner in sustainable mobility solutions that go beyond conventional automobiles. As the OC Marathon gears up to celebrate its 20th anniversary, there's a special group of individuals who have been an integral part of this event since its inception. These 25 marathon legends have not just run the OC Marathon or Half Marathon for two decades they have embodied the spirit of endurance, dedication, and passion that defines this iconic race
Gary Citron, an avid runner, continues to participate in the OC Marathon due to his enduring passion for the long run and the event's vibrant atmosphere. His favorite memories are not of specific events but the collective energy and camaraderie across years. Gary has seen the event evolve smoothly, appreciating improvements like better shirt designs, while acknowledging the challenges of maintaining marathon fitness as he's slowed from a 3:35 to 4:35 pace over 20 years.
Richard Eimers, a dedicated runner, was inspired to start running by his son's success in cross country. Since 2004, he's participated in the OC Marathon, cherishing memories like the rainy 2004 race. Over the years, he's seen the event grow with more options for runners, and running has kept him active and fit, even leading him to try ultra runs for their gentler impact on his body.
Tara Razi, the youngest OC Legend, has a deep connection to the OC Marathon, having participated since her college days despite busy schedules. Now a high school teacher, she continues the tradition for its significance, fun, and the friendships it has fostered. Her favorite memory involves counting Golden Retrievers along the course with her friend Liz. Over the years, Tara has seen the event improve with more participants, volunteers, and excitement, while her running journey has evolved from a speedy start at 15 to a more leisurely pace at 34, embracing the changes with joy.
Vicki S. Walker began running marathons at 55 with Coach Sumner and has since participated in numerous races, accumulating 66 medals. Although she now walks due to an injury, she continues to stay active and enjoys the camaraderie of group walks. Her favorite memory from an OC Marathon event was starting early to avoid rain, and she appreciates the event's growth in participation and fundraising opportunities for non-profits over the years.
Yen Darcy, an avid runner, participated in the first OC Marathon and considers it her legacy race. Her favorite memory is from 2010 when she did a back-to-back race, completing a 50K before the OC Marathon. She appreciates the event's growth under Gary and the admin team's leadership and feels she has grown stronger and wiser as a runner over the past 20 years.
Vikki Richardson is a big fan of the OC Marathon running festival and has been participating since 2004, despite a stormy first marathon experience. Over the years, she transitioned to shorter distances like the Half and 5K. Her favorite memory of the OC Marathon is meeting race announcer Fitz Kohler during her last full marathon in 2014. She feels the event has improved continuously, getting "better and better," and humorously notes that her running pace has slowed down over the past 20 years.
Iyob Tessema is a dedicated Ethiopian-American runner, having completed 80 full marathons, 91 half marathons, and numerous shorter races in 30 years He became a "Founding Legacy" runner of the OC Marathon in 2004 and has run it every year since, despite overcoming two Achilles tendon surgeries His favorite memory is the inaugural OC Marathon in 2004, and he's proud of the event's growth and improvements over the years, prioritizing runners' interests As a runner, he has grown as an athlete and a well-rounded individual, both physically and mentally
Carl G. Rogers began running marathons in his 40s without any prior running experience, inspired by an ad in a magazine for the first OC Marathon. His favorite memory is from the inaugural race, marking his first-ever athletic event. He notes changes in the event's course over the years, with added hills, and acknowledges that while he's gotten slower, he's become more determined to perform well in future races.
In September 2004, Wendy Baugh received a random postcard inviting her to train for the Inaugural OC Marathon/Half Marathon. This marked her first 'half' marathon. Despite a cold and rainy race day where her IT bands were giving her trouble and a few full marathoners passed her before the finish line, Wendy was hooked! The race, forged by weekly long runs, brought new and lifelong friendships. Wendy and her friends traveled all around America to earn t-shirts, medals, and enjoy cold beers. These races have created lifelong memories for Wendy, making them nothing short of extraordinary. This year marks Wendy's 99th race, a testament to her dedication and love for the OC Marathon.

Jay Nova Sanchez entered the world over three months early, weighing a mere 500 grams due to unknown factors causing severe growth restriction. Born on June 16th, he shares his birthday with his surfing hero, Jay Moriarity, who conquered Mavericks at a young age. The motto "paddle paddle paddle little grom" from the movie "Chasing Mavericks" became a guiding light for Jay's NICU journey.
His early days were marked by challenges as he learned to breathe with assistance on various machines, overcoming developmental hurdles typical for premature babies. Through it all, Hoag Hospital's NICU and its incredible nurses provided unwavering support and expertise, playing a crucial role in Jay's progress.
Despite the odds, Jay's resilience shone through, and after spending 133 days in the NICU at the Hoag Hospital, he finally went home on October 26th, 2023, thriving and full of life.
Approaching his first birthday, Jay's family is organizing a 5K run/walk team as part of the US Bank OC 5K to celebrate his incredible journey and raise funds for the Hoag Hospital Foundation. The Hoag’s NICU nurses are joining the Sanchez family for the 5K, weaving together support, camaraderie, and a shared journey of resilience and hope. Their goal of $2,640, symbolizing Jay's 26.4 gestation, aims to support future NICU babies and honor the dedicated medical teams who played a vital role in Jay's progress
Jay's story serves as a beacon of hope, reminding us of the strength found in perseverance and the power of community support His infectious smile and remarkable resilience continue to inspire all who hear his story, making him a true hero in the hearts of many. #JayBoyStrong
