A f N: TEN YEARS IN THE MAKING
In 2008, against a backdrop of the Government encouraging the independent regulation of health professions, the Nutrition Society agreed that the regulation of nutritionists would be strengthened by separating the learned society from its regulatory functions. The Association for Nutrition was therefore formed and, following the usual formalities of establishing an independent body, it became a registered charity and took responsibility for the UKVRN (the Register) in 2010. As a charity AfN has a responsibility to provide public benefit, which it does through regulating the profession to protect and benefit the public.
Since 2010, the AfN and the Register have grown from strength to strength. The Register now has almost 3,000 active registrants and is underpinned by robust governance standards. There are solid processes for registration, continual professional development, educational quality assurance and fitness to practise. All of which enable the public to have trust and reassurance in the Register, its Registrants and the AfN educational quality assurance schemes.
In 2020 we will be celebrating our 10th anniversary as a charity. We are looking forward to being able to celebrate our 10th anniversary with Registrants and the public across the country and we look forward to sharing our future strategic ambitions for the association with Registrants at our AGM in December. Our AGM will be followed by our Annual Discourse, which this year will celebrate the theme #NutritionIsAScience: From Inspired to Inspiring. The speakers will showcase the wide range of roles that Registered Nutritionists and Registered Associate Nutritionists play in improving health, sustainability, society and wellbeing. We welcome Registrants to come along to join us in December at the Wellcome Collection to hear about our future plans and be inspired by our great speaker line up.
