FROM THE EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR
In a matter of weeks, one rider is going to sit atop one very special 3-year-old cow horse in the alley in the historic Will Rogers Coliseum in Fort Worth, Texas. Maybe they will close their eyes, try to slow their breath, and say a prayer they draw a good cow. Maybe they’ll have their eye on the pen already, the notes of a hype song playing in their head, adrenaline starting to pump. The horse will be alert, attention trained on the rider despite the electric atmosphere, ready to make its sixth and final run of the show. Then the gate will open, the rider will push their hat down, gather their reins and ride into the arena, the packed crowd cheering above the noise of the announcers and the music. The rider will turn and call for their cow, and minutes later they will ride out as the 2022 National Reined Cow Horse Association Snaffle Bit Futurity® Open Champion.
Some of you know that feeling. Some of you have ridden out of that arena victorious. The rest of us have ridden every stride with you, cheering on these incredible horses as they push the scores higher and higher until the winning run stands alone. What our Snaffle Bit Futurity Finals contenders accomplish—preparing and competing across three events on 3-year-olds, TWICE—is nothing short of
phenomenal. There is no other event in our industry’s futurity season that demands as much physically and mentally from horses and riders. The bar couldn’t be set higher.
While the bar couldn’t be higher, this year the prize money certainly is. For the first time, the Open Champion will ride for a top prize of $200,000, and the Non Pro Champion will win their highestever prize of $40,000. It is exciting to see our purses growing closer to the level warranted by the degree of difficulty and the level of excellence our sport demands.
Our sport and our purses are growing because of you—our members, riders, owners, sponsors, friends and fans. Your passion for this sport is contagious, and your welcoming nature makes it easy for people to become a part. So this October, don’t let a friend miss the party. Bring your family, bring your friends, bring a new fan and come one, come all to the 2022 NRCHA Snaffle Bit Futurity, presented by Metallic Cat.
We’ll save you a seat, but you’ll only need the edge.

FROM THE PRESIDENT
When I think of cow horse, I always think of teamwork. It takes two to compete—you and your horse—it takes a team to make things work at home, at the barn, and to put our shows together. As we come into our most celebrated event, the National Reined Cow Horse Association Snaffle Bit Futurity®, I want to give credit to everyone supporting a team and to riders building their horses into confident teammates.
When we talk about our Futurity horses, or any horses we compete on for reined cow horse, we talk about wanting them to be on our team. As trainers, we work to build confidence in those horses that they can trust us and go where we ask. It is even more important with our 3-year-old competitors that we become a team.
Then, there is the team working behind us and next to us to not only keep our horses looking great, feeling great and riding great, but that also help us keep going every day. Assistants, spouses, children, horse owners, friends and family all make up the team that helps make a smooth day, whether working home or at a show. I can’t tell you how often my wife, Kristen, pulls out her phone to video a horse to show me what it is looking like—it sounds so small, but she is part of the team helping build me and that horse into a confident pair.
Before and at the show, our team grows to include our peers and our cow horse comrades. Yes, we are all competing against each other, but we are on the same team—cow horse. We know the struggles of training and working hard to reach our goals, and that heartbreak if the cow draw doesn’t help us get our horse shown. It’s not only the other riders in there rooting you on, but everyone in the stands and our NRCHA staff and officials. They work hard to be certain our team has a great facility, great cattle and great dirt so that we have the best shot possible to be a champion.
Our team is growing as we all saw at The Run For A Million. The
Cowboy Invitational, presented by XIT Ranch, saw cowboys become cow horse competitors, and we were right there with them. Some may have been white knuckled before they headed into that pen, and we all know what that feels like. Did you see our professionals at the back gate offering help? It’s because we are on the same team and want cow horse to be the best it can be, on any stage.
That brings me to our newest arena to showcase how great team cow horse can be: The American Performance Horseman at The American Rodeo. Our sponsors, like Teton Ridge, are giving so much support to our sport because they see that our team is strong. We lift each other up, help each other out and are there for each other, whether it is to celebrate the next Snaffle Bit Futurity Champion or to give a pat on the back when the cows weren’t in our favor.
One thing I know for sure, I am team cow horse, all the way.
Corey Cushing
Corey Cushing, NRCHA President
FROM THE JUDGE’S CHAIR
There are quite a few big money races for 3-year-old racehorse, but none have the prestige of the Kentucky Derby. That’s the race all the big breeders, trainers, owners and jockeys want to win the most. It’s the same with the National Cutting Horse Association Futurity, the National Reining Horse Association Futurity, and our own National Reined Cow Horse Association Snaffle Bit Futurity®.It showcases how good the horses are, how well they are prepared and exhibited, and, hopefully, theyhave a little luck by drawing a good, workable cow for the fence work.
It wasn’t long ago that the Snaffle Bit Futurity was for horses that weren’t quite talented enough for the cutting or reining futurities, but maybe blue collar enough to run one at a high speed down the fence. As the competition and prize money increased in the cow horse, people started breeding and raising horses with the Snaffle Bit Futurity as the goal.Owners and trainers from other disciplines jumped in and gave it a try only to find out how hard it is to win—most threw in the towel after finding out how difficult it is! Some have stayed the course, and everyone has benefited.
The judges for our events have evolved as well.Twenty years ago, I started as the NRCHA Director of Judges. My first duty was to design a score sheet for the cow work. Up
until that time the judge would watch the work and give a score that they thought the horse earned. The problem with that method was things were missed and opinions sometimes were not based on what actually happened during the work. So, I took a cutting horse score sheet and applied different headings for the score boxes that fit our event and presented it to the NRCHA Judges Committee. Some headings worked well and some needed to be tweaked a little until it fit our event like the score sheet is used today.
Correctly used, the cow work score sheet will describe what happened in the run and back up the judge’s score. One of the biggest challenges while developing the score sheet was to be able to watch and get a feel for the run while it was happening, and at the same time, mark the penalties and a few important boxes. When the run is completed, the remaining boxes should be filled out then added up for the final score.
The score sheet and the cow draw on the fence work make our event unique and transparent. One year when the Snaffle Bit Futurity was at Reno, Nevada, I was walking along the concourse before joining the judges and this nice, older lady in a wheel chair stopped me and asked if she could tell me something. I said sure, and then she said, “I really like this event.” I asked her what she liked
about it?
“Well, if your horse has a good work, you get a good score, if he has a poor work, you get a not-so-good score,” she said. I thought that pretty much sums it up, it doesn’t matter who you are or what your horse is, if you have a good work, you get a good score. How fair is that!?
You can have confidence that the team of judges will be prepared and ready to go.Remember, we’re all going the same way, we just have different paths in the success of the Snaffle Bit Futurity.
GOOD LUCK!
Until Next Time,
Bill Enk NRCHA Director of Judges

ROPERS READY
The cow horse action may have wrapped in the John Justin by Finals weekend, but the DT horses and American Rope Horse Futurity-presented Rope Horse Futurity will keep the excitement going. For five years, ropers have brought their best to Fort Worth, Texas, to compete for big money and prizes at this event. It brings out stars in the rodeo arena, as well as some of the Open Futurity riders you’re accustomed to seeing using the fence for turns, not hazing one down the pen.

THAT’S A WRAP
At 4 p.m. on October 22, the opening ceremonies kick start the thrilling Metallic Cat-presented Snaffle Bit Futurity® Finals in the historic Will Rogers Coliseum. COW HORSE AT THE AMERICAN
An innovative, inaugural event turns the spotlight on Western performance horsemen in 2023.
The top three Western performance horse events are headed to The American Rodeo in an unprecedented new event, The American Performance Horseman, debuting on Friday, March 10, 2023, at Globe Life Field. Reined cow horse, in addition to cutting and reining, will be included in Teton Ridges’ 2023 The American Rodeo event in Arlington, Texas, as part of its 10th anniversary celebration.
The announcement came during the 2022 The Run For A Million event on the same day the Cow Horse Challenge and Cowboy Invitational occurred, maximizing the impact of the announcement’s reception. Several of the cow horse competitors in the running to qualify for The American Performance Horseman were also competing that nigh

“The American Rodeo is an unrivaled celebration of the American West and represents the richest weekend in all of Western sports,” said Joe Loverro, President of Teton Ridge Sports. “As Teton Ridge continues to make great strides to bring the iconic events in the Western industry to a broader audience on an elevated platform, it was only natural to create an event to pay homage to the most prestigious competitors in Western performance sports and their incredible equine athletes.”
The American Performance Horseman is the creation and vision of Teton Ridge. It elevates Western equine sports through multiple platforms, with innovative and interactive technology. The prestigious competitive exhibition is supported by the American Quarter Horse Association, American Paint Horse
Association, National Reining Horse Association, National Cutting Horse Association and the National Reined Cow Horse Association. All are excited for their respective communities to be celebrated and showcased in this unparalleled and innovative format.
“The American Performance Horseman isn’t another horse show, it’s a celebration of Western horse sport and our athletes at the highest level,” stated NRCHA Executive Director Anna Morrison. “With a shortened format showcasing the top five riders of the year in each discipline, it will pack the excitement of our industry’s top talent in an hour-long production that will bring the sports we love to an entirely new audience.”

COMMITTED TO COW HORSE
Added money and special events continue to draw fans to reined cow horse.
Annually, cow horse continues to grow in show entries, memberships and horses sold bound for the performance arena. The National Reined Cow Horse Association recognizes that while the thrill of competing in reined cow horse is only one of the factors that pushes growth, it is also the heart and camaraderie of its members. With riders from other areas of the industry opting to join cow horse, it is clear that NRCHA is on an upward swing, and no evidence is more concrete than the increase in added money at NRCHA premier events. Additionally, this year NRCHA announced a special event to bring cow horse to the richest one-day rodeo in the world.
HIGHER STAKES
Following a highly successful year where membership and participation in reined cow horse increased exponentially, the NRCHA Board of Directors voted to increase 2022 premier event payouts and offer more finals event berths for competitors at the end of the previous year.
After seeing exponential increases in the premier events for the 2022 show season, now all eyes turn to the $200,000 purse now available for the Open Champion at the NRCHA Snaffle Bit Futurity®.
Open champion from $125,000 to $200,000, with the increase to 30 finalists plus ties implemented at the 2021 event still in place. In 2022, the bottomg placing Open horse and rider finalists are now guaranteed $10,000 in the limited age event.
The Board has also emphasized the importance of NRCHA’s Non Pro riders, and in 2022 the Non Pro Futurity champion will earn $40,000 with the bottom placing finalists earning at least $2,000; the Level 1 Non Pro Futurity will pay at least $7,500 and the Non Pro Boxing Futurity (formerly the Non Pro Limited) will pay at least $7,500 to the winner.
“In no other Western discipline futurity does a horse have to prepare to compete in three different events. The Board felt the Snaffle Bit Futurity prize should grow to honor the challenge,” said Corey Cushing, NRCHA president. “But the Futurity is only the start for our horses. Three sponsors—BDB Breeders, Hashtags and Western Bloodstock—support the World’s Greatest Horseman winner’s purse, and Nancy Crawford and Holy Cow Performance Horses have provided ongoing support for the Bridle Spectaculars. By increasing our commitment to the World’s Greatest Horseman purse, the Board wanted to make it clear that NRCHA’s support of the bridle horse is unwavering.”
The near-record high entries in the NRCHA Snaffle Bit Futurity, presented by Metallic Cat, proved that the reined cow horse industry is still on an upward swing. In 2022, the NRCHA Board has committed to increasing the purse for the
With the increased payout, the stakes are even higher on Finals weekend. We will see you in the seats at the historic Will Rogers Coliseum in Fort Worth, Texas! For tickets and event information, visit nrcha.com.
GUIDE TO THE ACTION
What are the judges looking for in the next Snaffle Bit Futurity® Champion?
Here is a breakdown of the three events.
It’s show time! Nowhere in the world of equestrian sport will you find more spine-tingling action than in the reined cow horse arena. The finely tuned equine athletes will dazzle you with their athleticism, cow sense, courage and finesse.
The 3-year-old horses in the National Reined Cow Horse Association Snaffle Bit Futurity® are judged in herd work, rein work and cow work. Contestants in the ancillary horse show classes hackamore, two-rein and bridle are judged in rein work and cow work only.
HERD WORK
In this event, one horse and rider enters a group of cattle, separates a single animal, and then prevents it from returning to the herd. The horse should step into the herd willingly and quietly, sorting out one cow without disturbing the rest. There is a 2 ½-minute time limit for each run, and two or three cattle are worked during that time.
Judges are impressed by horses that display exceptional courage while holding a difficult cow, work on a loose rein with a bright, alert expres-
sion, maintain proper position on the cow and spend the majority of the time limit holding a cow out front.
Judges also will deduct for losing a cow, failure to control the cow, insufficient working time, low degree of difficulty or lack of eye appeal.
REIN WORK
The rein work is the only phase of cow horse competition that does not involve a cow. Sometimes described as the equestrian equivalent of figure skating, horse and rider perform a pattern with specific maneuvers: loping fast and slow circles, performing flying lead changes, spinning in each direction, sliding stops and backing up. In the reined work, judges look for a horse that is willingly guided with little or no apparent resistance. Points are deducted for disobedience or deviation from the pattern, while credit is earned if the maneuvers are performed with extra speed and finesse in a manner that is pleasing to watch.
COW WORK
The cow work, also called the fence work, is the final, adrenaline-fueled stage of reined cow horse competition. Fortunes can rise and fall in a split second during this fast-paced event, and the outcome of the Snaffle Bit Futurity is not certain until the fence work is complete. The key to a good score is maintaining control of the cow at all times.
In the Snaffle Bit Futurity® herd work preliminaries, Call Me A Cool Cat, ridden by Phillip Ralls for Neiberger Performance Horses LLC, marked the high score of 220.
After horse and rider enter the arena, a single cow is pushed through the gate at the opposite end. The horse must first “box” the cow, or hold it at the end of the arena, maintaining control and staying in proper working position. Next, when the rider decides the time is right, he allows the cow to run down the long side of the arena and turns it on the wall. This first turn must take place after the center marker, but before the first penalty marker near the corner. Horse and rider must turn the cow a second time in the other direction, and may make additional turns on the fence before taking the cow into the open arena and maneuvering it in a 360-degree circle each way.
The most controlled cow work, with the highest degree of difficulty and the best form, scores the highest.
SCORING
Five judges are scoring the action at the Snaffle Bit Futurity. They all have the NRCHA’s highest 3A judge’s credential. Judge’s monitor for the 2022 Snaffle Bit Futurity is NRCHA Director of Judges, Bill Enk, who will be officiating along with Bobby Ingersoll, Chris Benedict, Bozo Rogers, Jaime Beamer and Les Timmons. The judge’s monitor for the Hackamore Classic is Bobby Lewis, and the judges are Smoky Pritchett, Ian Chisholm, Lyn Anderson, Garth Gardiner and Bobby Hunt. Judging the horse show classes are Smoky Pritchett and Ian Chisholm.
In the five-judge system, the high and low scores are thrown out, and the remaining three scores are added up to achieve the final score. For example, if a horse receives a score of 219, it averaged a 73 from each judge.
All events are scored using a plus and minus system for each maneuver. If a rider incurs penalty points, they are deducted from the overall score.
A score of 70 is considered average. Each contestant begins with a 70 as soon as they enter the arena. Each maneuver receives a plus, a zero or a minus from the judge. A plus indicates an above-average performance, zero means it was done correctly, and minus means a below-average maneuver.
Anything above 70 means horse and rider earned credit during the run, while a score below 70 means something went wrong; either the maneuver quality was poor or penalties were assessed.
The 2021 Open Two Rein Champion Justin Wright and Scooter Kat make a sliding stop look easy in the rein work.
In a perfect example of a cow work that marks high, Stylish Rebel Boy, ridden by Ryan Gallentine for owner Amber Haglin, tied in last year’s preliminary fence work with a 222.
PRIMO MORALES
AGES & STAGES:
THE EVOLUTION OF A REINED COW HORSE
The training of a reined cow horse is a methodical and meticulous process, taking years to reach the end result so prized by the Vaqueros—the finished bridle horse.
Reined cow horses are first eligible to compete in snaffle bit futurities as 3-year-olds. For many successful show horses, this is only the beginning. Beyond the futurities, three more show divisions await. The training process is a progression, with each stage building upon the one before it. The various phases of training beyond the snaffle bit are showcased here in Fort Worth with competitive divisions for cow horses aged 4 and up.
THE HACKAMORE YEARS
When young cow horses are 4- and 5-year-olds, they become eligible for the hackamore class. To showcase the traditional cow horse evolution, the Hackamore Classic was joined with the Snaffle Bit Futurity ® in 2016. The Hackamore Classic provides hackamore horses two opportunities to compete in Fort Worth. The horses compete in the three-event herd/rein/cow work derby that makes up the Hackamore Classic; and in the horse show classes where entries perform a rein work pattern and work a cow down the fence immediately after.
The hackamore is the traditional bitless headgear. It consists of a bosal, a braided noseband usually made of rawhide or leather, and a closed rein called a mecate. The customary mecate material is horsehair, but mohair or
synthetics are also common and legal in the show pen.
In the NRCHA Hackamore Classic derby, there are classes for Open, Intermediate Open, Limited Open, Level 1 Open and Open Novice Horse riders. Non-professional riders may compete in the Non Pro, Intermediate Non Pro and Limited Non Pro or Level 1 Non Pro classes. Eligibility is based on rider earnings. There is also a Non Pro Boxing class (herd/rein/ boxing) for Non Pro riders who do not go down the fence.
THE TWO-REIN
When reined cow horses turn 6, they are no longer eligible to be shown two-handed. At this age, they begin the transition to bridle horse status via the tworein, when a bridle is added to the hackamore. Two-rein horses are shown one-handed in a bit with shanks, a non-jointed mouthpiece, a port, and a roller, or “cricket.” Under the bridle, horses wear a second headstall with a pencil-thin bosalito, a narrower version of the hackamore bosal with a skinny mecate rein. The rider holds two sets of reins: the closed rawhide romal, which is attached to the bridle bit, and the thin mecate rein, which connects to the bosalito. Riders may
guide the horse with both sets of reins and are permitted to use one or more fingers between the reins to direct the horse.
Horses may show only one season in the two-rein division. During this
The Hackamore Classic, presented by Oswood Stallion Station, Amateur Championship went to Tylor Todd and Voodoo Whiskey (Shiners Voodoo Dr x Whiskey On Wheels x Paddys Irish Whiskey), who scored a composite 639 (H:206/R:213/C:220).
Katherine DeHaan, DVM, rode Smooth Dera Max (Smooth As A Cat x Dera Dually x Dual Pep), a 2015 gelding bred by Dana or Harry DeHaan, to the 2021 Snaffle Bit Futurity® Non Pro Two Rein class win.
year, they may also enter the bridle classes. In the two-rein classes, riders first perform a rein work pattern and then work a cow down the fence. You’ll be able to watch the Open and Non Pro two-rein horses in action here in Fort Worth.
THE BRIDLE
A finished bridle horse is considered the most elite competitor in the reined cow horse world. If they started their show career as a 3-year-old, and progressed continuously through the stages of training and competition, these bridle horses are now highly experienced 7-year-olds and older, ready to perform at the highest level. Bridle horses are shown in a shanked, ported bit with a cricket, in the traditional closed romal reins with the popper attached. The rider’s hand must be
closed on the reins with no fingers between at any time.
At the Snaffle Bit Futurity, bridle horses will compete in the Open,
Limited Open, Non Pro, Intermediate Non Pro and Limited Non Pro Bridle class, depending on the rider’s eligibility. They will be judged on rein work and fence work only.
An increasingly popular division at NRCHA premier events is the Bridle Spectacular. Like the futurities and derbies, Bridle Spectacular horses compete in herd work, rein work and fence work or boxing for Boxing division riders – often for very rich purses.
Another avenue for bridle horses is the four-event, or all-around competition, where steer-stopping is added to the herd/rein/fence lineup. The signature event of this kind is the NRCHA World’s Greatest Horseman, part of the annual NRCHA Celebration of Champions, held next February in Fort Worth, Texas.
At the 2021 Snaffle Bit Futurity®, Taylor Peters piloted 2014 mare Hot Shiney Lights (CS Lights x Shiners Hot Flash x Shining Spark), bred by Nicole Miller and owned by Scott Wagner, to the Limited Open Bridle class win.

THE MILLION DOLLAR CLUB
There are certain individuals whose winning records have surpassed an incredible milestone. Meet the elite Million Dollar Riders and Million Dollar Sires of the National Reined Cow Horse Association. All earnings are calculated as of August 31, 2022.
Following the 2021 National Reined Cow Horse Association Snaffle Bit Futurity®, several riders hit milestones in their careers and the trend continued into the 2022 show season. Today, five riders are NRCHA $2 Million Dollar Riders, and we now have 18 Million Dollar Riders.
Idaho horseman Jake Telford celebrated his Two Million Dollar Rider club membership during the 2021 Snaffle Bit Futurity® when he became the fourth member of the prestigious club. A Snaffle Bit Futurity Champion and Reserve Champion World’s Greatest Horseman, Telford continues to pilot horses to the top of the limited age and bridle events.
The newest, and youngest, member of the Two Million Dollar Rider Club is Justin Wright of Santa Maria, California. Wright, who piloted Zak 34 to the 2021 Open Futurity Champion title, surpassed two million in earnings at the 2022 DT Horses Western Derby where he took home more than $128,000 from the event while also qualifying Scooter Kat for the 2022 Cow Horse Challegen at The Run For A Million.
The Million Dollar Rider Club gained four members. During the 2021 event, Clayton Edsall surpassed the million dollar earnings mark, needing only $5,000, the $10,000 earned in the Open Finals let him finish the year with $1,016,157.75 to join the club. Since 2007, Edsall has regularly been in the Snaffle Bit Futurity® Finals, starting with the Limited Open Reserve Champion that year. In 2016, he earned the World’s Greatest Horseman Champion title aboard Skeets Oak Peppy, and annually continued to rack up titles like the Open Two Rein Reserve World Champions, 2018 he earned the 2017 NRCHA Open Hackamore World Champion, and continued to dominate many of the derby-aged events on Bet He Sparks, Metallic Train, Bet Hesa Boon and others. Edsall credits the great horses to his continued success.
Sarah Dawson piloted the 2018 mare Selvarey to yet another career first for the Perrin, Texas, horsewoman
when the pair earned the 2022 Tres Osos Cow Horse Derby Open Champion title. She is one of the youngest to achieve this milestone, and she is only the second woman to have earned the Snaffle Bit Futurity Champion title, both aboard the mare, owned by Sheri Jamieson. When asked about the horses that have made this milestone possible, Dawson said there were two that stood out the most: Shine Smarter and Selvarey. Shine Smarter, owned by Linda Mars, is a 2012 mare that took Dawson to her first Snaffle Bit Futurity® Open Finals and qualified her to ride in the Cow Horse Challenge at The Run For A Million.
Matt Koch, of Elizabeth, Colorado, surpassed one million in career NRCHA earnings at The Run For A Million Cow Horse Challenge, presented by XIT Ranch. Koch, who rode Smart Ladies Sparkle that is owned by the XIT Ranch, finished tied for twelfth place and earned $3,500, which pushed him over the mark. A three-time AQHA World Champion and an NRCHA two-rein, bridle and limited age event champion, Koch has been in the top four of the World’s Greatest Horseman and earned a spot in multiple Futurity Finals.
The most recent NRCHA Million Dollar Rider is Nick Dowers of Dyer, Nevada. Dowers emerged on the cow horse stage in 2011 aboard Anne Reynolds’ Shiney And Very Smart, earning the 2011 NRCHA Derby Intermediate and Limited Open champion titles, then followed the 2011 NRCHA Snaffle Bit Futurity® Limited Open Champion title on Smarter Image before earning the 2013 Snaffle Bit Futurity Open win on Time For The Diamond. Since then, he’s been a mainstay at premier events competing annually in the Futurity and derby events as well as earning titles in hackamore and bridle events.

The Santa Maria, California, horseman earned more than $307,000 during the 2018 show year to push him over the Million Dollar mark. After winning the 2021 NRCHA Snaffle Bit Futurity® Open aboard Zak 34, he was $100,000 closer to the $2 million mark and then more than $128,000 he earned at one show, the DT Horses Western Derby, in June 2022 pushed him into that elite club.
ZANE DAVIS/$1,836,876.41
Million Dollar Rider Zane Davis, Blackfoot, Idaho, achieved his milestone during the 2015 NRCHA Celebration of Champions in Fort Worth, Texas. Davis was the 2009 Snaffle Bit Futurity Open Champion, the 2017 Snaffle Bit Futurity Open Reserve Champion, the 2014 Hackamore Classic Open Champion, and has garnered numerous other NRCHA premier event titles and top placings.
TED ROBINSON/$1,949,971.86
Ted Robinson, Oak View, California, was the NRCHA’s first Million Dollar Rider. He has a record seven NRCHA Snaffle Bit Futurity Open Championships and two World’s Greatest Horseman titles to his name.
ANNIE M. REYNOLDS/$1,725,293.92
Annie M. Reynolds, of King Hill, Idaho, is the NRCHA’s only non pro female Million Dollar Rider. She was a leading non pro, winning an unprecedented eight NRCHA Futurity Non Pro Championships. Reynolds became a NRCHA Open rider after the 2012 NRCHA Snaffle Bit Futurity, when her career Open earnings surpassed the $100,000 mark. She was inducted into the NRCHA Hall of Fame in 2015.
CHRIS DAWSON/$1,645,088.15
Perrin, Texas, horseman Chris Dawson became the National Reined Cow Horse Association’s sixteenth Million Dollar Rider at the young age of 36. In 2013, Dawson hit his stride, collecting four out of five NRCHA premier event championship titles. In the fall of 2018, he surpassed the seven-figure milestone at the Southwest Reined Cow Horse Association Pre-Futurity.
BOYD RICE/$1,527,187.62
Boyd Rice, Weatherford, Texas, already a National Cutting Horse Association multi-million-dollar rider, can now also measure his NRCHA earnings in the seven figures. MILLION DOLLARMILESTONE
Several stallions hit earnings highs on the backs of their successful offspring this year.
By Kate Bradley Byars
It was a banner year for reined cow horse sires as their offspring pushed several to milestone earning markers.
At the 2022 National Reined Cow Horse Association Snaffle Bit Futurity®, two stallions will receive Millon Dollar accolades, Dual Smart Rey and Woody Be Tuff, and two more will be honored as $4 Million Dollar sires, One Time Pepto and WR This Cats Smart. Metallic Cat will be the first $5 Million Dollar Sire honored by NRCHA.
Dual Smart Rey has sired a World’s Greatest Horseman and a Non Pro Snaffle Bit Futurity Champion, as well as earners of more than $1,089,738.44 in reined cow horse earnings. Owned by Strawn Valley Ranch of Strawn Valley, Texas, the 2002 Quarter Horse stalion (Dual Rey x The Smart Look x Smart Little Lena) has sired NRCHA earners of $1,038,613.54 as of December 1, 2021. The stallion earned more than $330,000 and the NCHA Open Super Stakes Champion title in the arena. His highest-earning offspring is Duals Lucky Charm (out of TRR Ms Pepcid), with more than $276,000 and the 2016 NRCHA Snaffle Bit Futurity Open Champion.
Woody Be Tuff sold in December of 2021, shortly after he crossed the Million Dollar Sire mark with then-owner Center Ranch. The stallion (Nitas Wood x Tuffs Junie x Tuff Wood) sired the 2021 NRCHA Snaffle Bit Futurity Open Champion Zak 34 (a 2018 stallion out of Cat Digs Lucinda), which helped catapult him over the million-dollar mark to claim $1,551,656.46 in reined cow horse offspring earnings. Now owned by Melanie Smith and Kaleb Terlip, Woody Be Tuff stands at the Lazy E Ranch in Guthrie, Oklahoma.
There are four sires who have surpassed offspring earnings of more than $4 million. One Time Pepto reached that mark in January of 2022 and now has $4,370,165.40 in total offspring earnings. Since 2002, Jeffrey and Sheri Matthews of North Carolina have owned the 2001 stallion (Peptoboonsmal x One Time Soon x Smart Little Lena), bred by David and Clare Capps. When the horse achieved NRCHA Million Dollar Sire status in 2014, there were only 61 NRCHA earners to his credit. Now, 232 offspring have contributed to the stal-
lion’s astounding $4 million mark. The 2013 NRCHA Snaffle Bit Futurity Open Champion Time For The Diamond (out of Diamonds With Style), with $1,339,580.17, 2012 NRCHA Snaffle Bit Futurity Open Reserve Champion This One Time (out of Katies Starlight) with $158,969.39, and the 2018 World’s Greatest Horseman Champion Hickory Holly Time (out of Hickorys Holly Cee) with $228,563.40.
WR This Cats Smart reached Million Dollar Sire status with only 87 money-earning foals. Now, the 1999 stallion, bred by Wiens Ranch and owned by the Wagonhound Land & Livestock Co., has $4,254,961.29 in offspring earnings. A champion cutting horse, WR This Cats Smart (High Brow Cat x The Smart Look x Smart Little Lena) can look to earners like the 2007 gelding Tuckers Smart Cat (out of Smoke Time Tuck), a Supreme Reined Cow Horse with more than $150,000 in earnings, as well as Sinful Cat (out of Sinful Playgiril), a 2008 stallion and earner of $102,258, for helping him reach new status.
In 2021, Metallic Cat was honored as the new NRCHA All-Time Leading Sire during the 2021 Snaffle Bit Futurity. Following the conclusion of the Teton Ridge Stallion Stakes in April, Metallic Cat’s offspring had earned more than $5,369,288.15, making him the first sire to cross the $5 million threshold in the NRCHA. Owned by Bobby Patton’s Rocking P Ranch, the 2005 stallion, by High Brow Cat and out of Chers Shadow (by Peptoboonsmal), became an NRCHA Million Dollar Sire in 2018 and surpassed the Two Million Dollar mark less than a year later. By 2020, he had passed the Three Million Dollar mark before becoming a Four Million Dollar Sire in the fall of 2021. His top performers, Call Me Mitch, Metallic Train, Cats Picasso, Ricato Suave, Hazardouz Material and Moonshineandtwoadvil, each have earned more than $100,000 in the NRCHA.
These milestones will be celebrated during the 2022 NRCHA Snaffle Bit Futurity Finals on Saturday, October 22, in the Will Rogers Coliseum. Congratulations to the stallion’s connections on this milestone.
A complete list of stallions nearing the club’s earnings mark can be found at nrcha.com/nrcha-million-dollar-sires/. (earnings as of August 31, 2022)
LIKE A BOSS
In 2022, the NRCHA is recognizing top producing mares, or Boss Mares, in a special ceremony. There are National Reined Cow Horse Association special awards for riders and sires that hit earnings marks, and now, NRCHA dams with offspring earning $500,000 or more are joining that group.
When comparing mares that produce high-earning offspring to the stallions that sire up to twenty times the number of offspring, it’s a statisticians dream to run the numbers. It’s true mare power!

STEADFAST SUPPORT
Generous sponsors offer NRCHA competitors and horse owners ample opportunity to cash in on reined cow horses.
Long-standing supporters benefit the National Reined Cow Horse Association in many ways, including providing prize money at events like the 2022 NRCHA Snaffle Bit Futurity®, presented by one such sponsor, Metallic Cat. New opportunities to take advantage of the generous support provided is exemplified in the NRCHA Hackamore Classic, presented by Oswood Stallion Station, and the Owners Incentive Fund supporters continue providing a base to build prize funds for competitors.
SOLID SUPPORT
For a corporation to continue to provide financial support for an equine event means that the industry is on the right track, and the reined cow horse industry is definitely headed in the right direction. Metallic Cat continues as the presenting sponsor of the NRCHA Snaffle Bit Futurity as do CINCH and Holy Cow Performance Horses, both of which renewed their support of the event for the ninth year.
The first stallion to have offspring surpass $5 million in earnings, Metallic Cat continues to support the reined cow horse industry through Futurity title sponsorship. In 2018, Metallic Cat joined the NRCHA Million Dollar Sire
club, and less than two years later, surpassed the $3 million dollar threshold and a year ago became the NRCHA All-Time Leading Sire! Owned by Bobby Patton’s Rocking P Ranch in Weatherford, Texas, the Snaffle Bit Futurity is excited to have Metallic Cat as the presenting sponsor of the event as well as the draw and after parties. Visit metalliccat.com for information about the stallion.
Longtime sponsor CINCH provides the Intermediate Open Champion with a $30,000 win check. The Western wear company, based in Denver, Colorado, supports the equine industry by creating quality jeans, shirts and casual wear that stands up to the horse show lifestyle. The CINCH Intermediate Open division helps up-and-coming reined cow horse trainers continue to pursue their careers. Visit cinchjeans. com for information about the company’s quality guarantee and a directory of retailers.
In 2022, Holy Cow Performance Horses’ longtime support of reined cow horse events continues to shine a spotlight on the supreme goal in training a reined cow horse—a bridle horse. The sponsorship gives $25,000 added to each of the Open Bridle Spectaculars held at the Teton Ridge Stallion Stakes
and at the DT Horses Western Derby, and an additional $25,000 added to the Open Bridle held at the Snaffle Bit Futurity.
Nancy Crawford, owner of Holy Cow Performance Horses, has facilities in Santa Ynez, California, and Weatherford, Texas, and has horses showing in reined cow horse and cutting events. At the 2021 DT Horses Western Derby, Crawford also provided the added money in the first CD Survivor Bridle Horse Super Spectacular, adding roping to the CD Survivor Memorial Bridle Spectacular, and the event continued in 2022. Another way Holy Cow Performance Horses honors the bridle horse! Visit holycowperformancehorses.com to see more on this sponsor.

OSWOOD MULTI-YEAR PRESENTING SPONSOR
In 2021, the National Reined Cow Horse Association Hackamore Classic gained a valuable presenting sponsor in Oswood Stallion Station. The Hackamore Classic highlights those Derby-aged horses moving from the snaffle bit stage and furthering traditional reined cow horse training. Oswood Stallion Station, based in Weatherford, Texas, continues to support the cow horse industry though this multi-year partnership.
Much like managing each of the stallions in his care, Jeff Oswood understands the importance of supporting a horse throughout its career. With more than 40 years in the industry, Oswood moved the Stallion Station to Weatherford in 2007, close to the most focused area of the Western per-

LET’S ROPE!
The World Championship Rope Horse Futurity marks its fifth year at the NRCHA Snaffle Bit Futurity®.
For the fifth year, the American Rope Horse Futurity Association World Championship Rope Horse Futurity makes its home in Fort Worth, Texas, and will crown champions during the 2022 Snaffle Bit Futurity®. Open to 4-, 5- and 6-year-old horses, the format consists of three rounds of competition, plus a finals for top qualifiers. Horses advancing to the finals keep their composite scores from the preliminary rounds, and champions in each class are determined based on the highest combined scores from three rounds and the finals. All exhibitors must be National Reined Cow Horse Association members to compete.
Divisions for the World Championship Rope Horse Futurity are Open Heading and Open Heeling, with incentives offered to the highest placing 4-year-old horse, highest placing No. 6 and lower header, and highest placing No. 7 and lower heeler. Scores are based on two judges’ assessments, plus points from the time accrued during the run. Time points are calculated by taking a base score of 80 and then subtracting the time on the run. A 10-point penalty is assessed for a broken barrier and a five-point penalty in the case of roping a leg. Riders are allowed to compete on unlimited horses per side and pay a $1,500 entry fee per side.
The event, sponsored by DT Horses, kicks off Thursday, October 20, at 8 a.m. in the John Justin Arena. For more information on the ARHFA visit ropehorsefuturity.com.
Born In The Boondocs and Tate Kirchenschlager put together a 233.68 run in the Open Heading Finals, bringing them to a 915.69 composite and securing the $23,000 championship check. The team also earned $3,000 in the second round, bolstering the 2016 gelding’s ledger. Owned by Tate and Terra

COWBOY CL ASS MAKES ITS OFFICIAL DEBUT
Starting at the 2022 Snaffle Bit Futurity®, the formerly invitation-only Cowboy Class becomes an official, sanctioned NRCHA event. The class’ popularity and entries have grown considerably, as well as riders wanting to attend the special Cowboy Clinics offered by the National Reined Cow Horse Association. Starting in 2023, the Cowboy Class will be a recognized class, and local affiliates and show producers can host these classes at their NRCHA-approved events. It will be recognized as a sanctioned Category 1 special event, similar to the all-around and spectacular classes.
How did the NRCHA go back its ranching roots? Originally, the class was created to encourage working cowboys and cowgirls to enter the sport of reined cow horse. It consists of three parts: rein work, cow work and roping, or steer stopping. Ranch horses typically know how to work a
cow and execute the maneuvers in a reining pattern, so the class is an opportunity for working cowboys to refine their skills, bring their horses to town, and compete for NRCHA points and money.
In 2019, the National Reined Cow Horse Association hosted two working ranch, cowboy-focused clinics. The clinics’ goal was to bring show-pen skills and training techniques to the cowboys whose horses use reined cow horse elements on the ranch. That year, the NRCHA offered the inaugural $2,000-added invitational NRCHA Cowboy Class at the 2019 Snaffle Bit Futurity, presented by Metallic Cat. Interest immediately bloomed.
In 2022, the 6666 Ranch in Guthrie, Texas, held a clinic for ranches invited to attend $25,000 Cowboy Invitational, presented by XIT Ranch, held during the prestigious The Run For A Million in Las Vegas, Nevada, in August.
On Wednesday, October 19, cowboys will compete in rein work, fence work and modified steer stopping. Eligibility for this class is limited to individuals working on ranches and livestock operations, and who have earned less than $15,000 in NRCHA Open and Non Pro earnings outside of the Cowboy Class.
The 2021 class champion, Cotton Leathers of the Frisco Creek Ranch Division of the 6666 Ranch, located in Guthrie, Texas, took home the win aboard Amarillo Attraction (Playin Attraction x Seven In Vegas x Seven From Heaven), owned by Burnett Ranches, LLC. It was Leathers’ third time to try his hand at the event.
“The class is great,” said Leathers. “There are a lot more people wanting to get in it than were here today, so I think it will grow. I think it’s good for the NRCHA and cowboys, and anybody who wants to show a horse who is eligible for it. It’s a good time and fun. Everyone always goes home and works on their horses whenever they leave, whether they do well or not. They go home and make themselves and their horses better. So, it’s good for the industry and good for horses and people.”
The cowboys are all in on learning and competing in the art of reined cow horse, and the 2022 Cowboy Class is sure to impress those in the Will Rogers Coliseum.
For the last three years, Cotton Leathers has used his experience at the Cowboy Class Invitational to hone his skills for the show pen and on the ranch. He won the Championship in 2021.

RODEAR: COW DOGS COMPETE
The MARS EQUESTRIAN™ National Finals Rodear returns to the National Reined Cow Horse Association 2022 Snaffle Bit Futurity®. A rodear was first held at the Futurity in 2017. Since then, the cattle dogs, horses and handlers have amazed crowds competing at the event.
This modern cow dog competition showcases a handler and dog working together in a quiet and controlled manner to maneuver cattle. It is a point and timed event, with emphasis on the handler’s stockmanship as he or she instructs a dog in moving the cattle through a series of obstacles. Handlers are horseback for the event.
At the 2021 MARS EQUESTRIAN™ National Finals Rodear, the Open title went Kevin Lippe, of Blue Eye, Missouri, and Australian Kelpie “Chock.” Throughout the calendar year, dogs and their handlers compete across the United States to achieve a position in the top 20 rankings in three divisions: Open, Non Pro and Green Dog. The top 20 in each division arrive in Fort Worth, Texas, in October to compete in the semi-final rounds to determine the top five in each division. These 15 dogs will then compete at the

In 2021, Open handler and rider Kevin Lippe with dog “Chock” and horse “Birdie” took home the MARS Equestrian™ National Finals win.

Boyd resides in Weatherford, Texas, with his wife of 35 years, Halee. Together, the couple created a family-oriented business, with three children; Tarin, Tatum and Trea, and three grandchildren; Charly, Tell and Kennedy.
Jake Telford
Jake Telford began his career nearly 20 years ago as a professional rope horse trainer and team roping competitor. His focus shifted to reined cow horses, but his love for riding and training has never weakened. In 2011, the Caldwell, Idaho, horseman joined the elite ranks of the NRCHA Million Dollar Riders, and says he is “completely humbled” by that distinction. For three years, from 2009 - 2011, Telford was the NRCHA’s highest money-earning rider. In 2015, he claimed his first NRCHA Open Snaffle Bit Futurity championship title and in 2021, he joined the Two Million Dollar Rider club. Jake operates his business while fathering two daughters, Shawny and Sierra, who also compete in reined cow horse events as well as youth rodeo.
Cayley Wilson
Canadian horseman Cayley Wilson was elected to the NRCHA Board of Directors in 2019. Shortly after falling in love with the exciting sport of reined cow horse, Wilson showed his first snaffle bit futurity horse in 2002. Throughout his 20-year horse training career, Wilson has claimed several finalists spots at NRCHA premier events and collected numerous championship titles. Desiring to be as involved with the association as possible, he became an AA NRCHA Judge, and judged the NRCHA Derby twice—a career highlight. The NRCHA Professionals Committee Chairperson owns and operates Wilson Performance Horses now located in Rosston, Texas. Cow horse is a passion shared by the entire family - his wife, Katie, is an avid NRCHA non pro competitor, his oldest daughter, Ryley, competes in youth and high school rodeo events, and the youngest daughter, Grace, is already following in her family’s footsteps.
Dan Roeser
Dan Roeser has been a consistent top NRCHA moneyearning professional and has won futurity championships at numerous NRCHA affiliate events, as well as dozens of year-end championships in the Intermountain Reined Cow Horse Circuit. In 2009, Dan won year-end championships in the Open Snaffle Bit, Open Derby, Open Hackamore, Open Bridle and Open Two Rein, a feat no other trainer has accomplished. For the past 20 years, Dan has served on the Board of Directors for the Idaho Quarter Horse Association, Idaho Reined Cow Horse Association, and the NRCHA. He has also been the president of those associations. He was also the driving force behind the NRCHA’s regional, affiliate, national, and world championship programs, which has grown into the NRCHA Celebration of Champions. Dan operates his training facility, Roeser Ranch, in Marsing, Idaho.
Jon Roeser
Jon Roeser has been training and showing horses for more than three decades. With over 25 career championships, the NRCHA Million Dollar Rider and World’s Greatest Horseman has won the championship of every NRCHA premier event. Jon was raised with his three brothers on the family ranch in Idaho. The Roeser family’s patriarch, the late Jim Roeser, was a NRCHA horseman and standout rodeo competitor. After apprenticing under another legendary NRCHA Hall of Fame trainer, Greg Ward, Jon built his own ranch, Jon Roeser Training Stables, in Lemoore, California. He has served on the NRCHA Board of Directors, alongside his brother, Dan, for 20-plus years and is deeply committed to preserving the NRCHA tradition. In 2019, Jon joined his father, Jim, and brother, Dan, in the NRCHA Hall of Fame. Jon and his wife, Tanya, reside in Kuna, Idaho, with their four children: Clay, Gage, Tylar and Kelsi.

The front is smooth and inviting. And it’s got a bold middle flavor that I love but can’t really describe. The finish is warm honey-almond with a smokey tinge on the very back end. It’s damn good.
