I am honored to welcome everyone to the 2019 National Reined Cow Horse Association Snaffle Bit Futurity®. This event is the last of our four annual premier events, and it is our largest event. I am pleased to announce we have a lot in store for everyone attending the Futurity this year.
I applaud the group of horsemen who went out on a limb in 1970 and launched the first Snaffle Bit Futurity. They took a chance and it paid off in a big way. The Snaffle Bit Futurity is now one of the most thrilling, prestigious and well-known equine events in the world.
In an effort to continue the forwardthinking mentality, the NRCHA has launched numerous new programs this year to promote growth and participation. Many of which Snaffle Bit Futurity attendees will get to see come to fruition right here in Fort Worth, Texas.
The NRCHA Board of Directors kicked off the 2019 show season by re-investing in our owners and exhibitors and increasing the added money at our premier events by $72,500. This money was distributed across all four premier events, mostly in the non pro divisions. The NRCHA Board of Directors also waived finals fees for
our open finalists. Both of these financial gains were made without increasing entry fees.
NRCHA also spent this year embracing our ranching roots by holding clinics for ranch hands and working cowboys. We were blown away by the amount of talent and horseflesh at these clinics. We are excited to host our first Cowboy Class Invitational right here in Fort Worth. In recent years we have noticed tremendous growth in our non pro limited divisions. We appreciate our non pro limited riders and are pleased to promote a new Beginning Fence Work class, with great added money and prizes up for grabs. Another special event we will be hosting at this Futurity is a Cow Horse for Cutters, with hopes of seeing continued growth in our boxing classes. I invite all of you to embrace our new initiatives in your own way.
Throughout my seven years as Executive Director, I have had the pleasure of working alongside thoughtful board members, talented staff, generous sponsors, enthusiastic owners and riders and supportive fans. I thank all of these individuals who have given so much to make this association as successful as it is today. Your constant dedication does not go unnoticed or unappreciated.

NRCHA has become the talk of equine industry. Each new story I hear about growth inside of our community puts a smile on my face. Reined cow horse is finally receiving the recognition and credit it deserves. Cow horse is the most exciting and athletically demanding sport on dirt. We have the best owners, riders, sponsors and fans in the business.
These are exciting times in the NRCHA, and we invite you to be a part of it all. Thank you for celebrating the 50th annual NRCHA Snaffle Bit Futurity with us! I hope you enjoy your time with us as much as we enjoy getting to know you.
All the best, Jay Winborn
ThE momENT wE’VE aLL BEEN waITINg F or
The event many have spent the past two years working towards has finally arrived – the 2019 National Reined Cow Horse Association Snaffle Bit Futurity®. For cow horse fans, this is the most highly anticipated event of the year. In fact, many people will tell you this is where they first fell in love with the exhilarating sport.
The Snaffle Bit Futurity was created to showcase young horses trained through traditional Vaquero methods. At the time, the association’s main focus was on older, bridle horses. The horsemen in those days desired a market for their younger horses.
The first Snaffle Bit Futurity was held in 1970 in Sacramento, California, with
a mere 27 entries and a total purse of $3,900. Fast-forward 49 futurities later, our entries are at an all-time high and contestants are riding for over a $1 million dollar purse.
While the NRCHA has grown and excelled in every aspect over the years, I believe we still hold true to our core values and goals. The Snaffle Bit Futurity and Snaffle Bit Futurity Sales have created a solid and competitive market for our young prospects. Adding the Two Rein Spectaculars over the past few years encouraged owners and riders to progress their horses one step closer to the bridle phase. And last, but certainly not least, our sellout World’s Greatest Horseman competition has put our incredible equine athletes on the map – bridle horses for open, non pro and youth riders are in high demand.
After serving almost two years on the NRCHA Board of Directors and closing in on my first year as President, I must say I could not be prouder of the association - the membership, the growth, the regional and premier events and the future. Everything is working, and working well. Many of us inside of this industry have been waiting for this moment. Not only have we been antici-
pating the 50th annual NRCHA Snaffle Bit Futurity, we have been anticipating where the association is at as a whole.
While it has been a busy year for the NRCHA, there is no sign of slowing down anytime soon. We have rolled out a lot of new programs this past year, and only have bigger plans for the future.
I welcome each and every one of you to the 2019 NRCHA Snaffle Bit Futurity. This is an experience you won’t want to miss. Please join us in celebrating not only the past 49 Snaffle Bit Futurities, but the next 50 as well!
Good luck to everyone competing here at the historic Will Rogers Memorial Center! Remember, this is only our horses’ first show – it’s not their last. Take time to enjoy the ride over the next two weeks and be proud of all your hard work.

What are the judges looking for in the next Snaffle Bit Futurity Champion? Here is a breakdown of the three events.
It’s show time! No where in the world of equestrian sport will you find more spine-tingling action than in the reined cow horse arena. These finely tuned equine athletes will dazzle you with their athleticism, cow sense, courage and finesse.
The 3-year-old horses in the National Reined Cow Horse Association Snaffle Bit Futurity® are judged in herd work, rein work and cow work. Contestants in the ancillary horse show classes –hackamore, two-rein and bridle – are judged in rein work and cow work only.
HERD WORK
In this event, one horse and rider enters a group of cattle, separates a single animal, and then prevents it from returning to the herd. The horse should step into the herd willingly and quietly, sorting out one cow without disturbing the rest. There is a two-and-a-half minute time limit for each run, and two or three cattle are worked during that time.
Judges are impressed by horses that display exceptional courage while holding a difficult cow, work on a loose
rein with a bright, alert expression, maintain proper position on the cow and spend the majority of the two-anda-half minutes holding a cow out front.
Judges also will deduct for losing a cow, failure to control the cow, insufficient working time, low degree of difficulty, or lack of eye appeal.
REIN WORK
The rein work is the only phase of cow horse competition that does not involve a cow. Sometimes described as the equestrian equivalent of figure skating, horse and rider perform a
Metallic River (Metallic Cat x Tootsie Rey x Dual Rey) and Corey Cushing scored a 219 to earn the high score in the 2018 Open herd work and a $5,000 check for owner Sheri L. Jamieson.

pattern with specific maneuvers: fast and slow circles, lead changes, spins, sliding stops and backing up. In the reined work, judges look for a horse that is willingly guided, with little or no apparent resistance. Points are deducted for disobedience or deviation from the pattern, while credit is earned if the maneuvers are performed with extra speed and finesse in a manner that is pleasing to watch.
COW WORK
The cow work, also called the fence work, is the final, adrenaline-fueled stage of reined cow horse competition. Fortunes can rise and fall in a split second during this fast paced event, and the outcome of the Snaffle Bit Futurity is not certain until the fence work is complete. The key to a good score is
Matt Koch piloted Roan Olena Oak (Olena Oak x Starlight Sailor x Topsail Cody) to a 226, the highest scoring cow work run at the 2018 Open finals.
maintaining control of the cow at all times.
After horse and rider enter the arena, a single cow is pushed through the gate at the opposite end. The horse must first “box” the cow, or hold it at the end of the arena, maintaining control and staying in proper working position. Next, when the rider decides the time is right, he allows the cow to run down the long side of the arena and turns it on the wall. This first turn must take place after the center marker, but before the first penalty marker near the corner. Horse and rider must turn the cow a second time in the other direction, and may make additional turns on the fence before taking the cow into the open arena and maneuvering it in a 360-degree circle each way.
The most controlled cow work, with the highest degree of difficulty and the best form, scores the highest.
SCORING
Five judges are scoring the action at the Snaffle Bit Futurity. They all have the NRCHA’s highest 3A judge’s credential. Judge’s Monitor for the 2019 Snaffle Bit Futurity is NRCHA Director of Judges, Bill Enk, who will be officiating along with Lyn Anderson, Chris Benedict, Al Dunning, Fielding “Bozo” Rogers and Ken Wold.
Judging the Hackamore Classic, horse show classes and AQHA Ranching Heritage portions of the competition are Rich Chayer and Wade Reaney. In the five-judge system, the high score and low score are thrown out, and the remaining three scores are
added up to achieve the final score. For example, if a horse receives a score of 219, it averaged a 73 from each judge.
All events are scored using a plus and minus system for each maneuver. If a rider incurs penalty points, they are deducted from the overall score.
A score of 70 is considered average. Each contestant begins with a 70 as soon as they enter the arena. Each maneuver receives a plus, a zero, or a minus from the judge. Plus indicates an above-average performance, zero means it was done correctly, and minus means a below-average maneuver.
Anything above 70 means horse and rider earned credit during the run, while a score below 70 means something went wrong; either the maneuver quality was poor or penalties were incurred.

The training of a reined cow horse is a methodical and meticulous process, taking years to reach the end result so prized by the vaqueros – the finished bridle horse.
reined cow horses are first eligible to compete in snaffle bit futurities as 3-year-olds. For many successful show horses, this is only the beginning. Beyond the futurities, three more show divisions await. The training process is a progression, with each stage building upon the one before it. The various phases of training beyond the snaffle bit are showcased here in Fort Worth with competitive divisions for cow horses aged 4 and up.
THE HACKAMORE YEARS
When young cow horses are 4- and 5-year-olds, they become eligible for the hackamore class. To showcase the traditional cow horse evolution, the Hackamore Classic was joined with the Snaffle Bit Futurity ® in 2016. The Hackamore Classic provides hackamore horses two opportunities to compete in Fort Worth. The horses compete in the three-event herd/rein/cow work derby that makes up the Hackamore Classic; and in the horse show classes where entries perform a rein work pattern and work a cow down the fence immediately after.
The hackamore is the traditional bitless headgear. It consists of a bosal, a braided noseband usually made of rawhide or leather, and a closed rein called a mecate. The customary mecate material is horsehair, but mohair or
synthetics are also common and legal in the show pen.
In the NRCHA Hackamore Classic derby, there are classes for Open, Intermediate Open, Limited Open, Level 1 Limited Open, Level 1 Limited Open and Open Novice Horse riders. Non-professional riders may compete in the Non Pro, Intermediate Non Pro and Novice Non Pro, or Amateur classes. Eligibility is based on rider earnings. There is also a Non Pro Limited class (herd/rein/boxing) for Non Pro riders who do not go down the fence.
THE TWO-REIN
When reined cow horses turn 6, they are no longer eligible to be shown two-handed. At this age, they begin the transition to bridle horse status via the tworein, when a bridle is added to the hackamore. Two-rein horses are shown one-handed in a bit with shanks, a non-jointed mouthpiece, a port, and a roller, or “cricket.” Under the bridle, horses wear a second headstall with a pencil-thin bosalito, a narrower version of the hackamore bosal with a skinny mecate rein. The rider holds two sets of reins: the closed rawhide romal, which is attached to the bridle bit, and the thin mecate rein, which con-
nects to the bosalito. Riders may guide the horse with both sets of reins and are permitted to use one or more fingers between the reins to direct the horse.
Horses may show only one season in the two-rein division. During this
Finishing 2.5 points above the reserve, Eric Freitas rode his homebred horse, Cat Snacks (Cats Full Moon x Chic Snacks x Snackbox), to a composite 649 to win the Non Pro Hackamore Classic title.
With a 296 composite score, CD Highlights (High Brow CD x Go Little Starlight x Grays Starlight) and Randy Paul won the 2018 Open Two Rein.

year, they may also enter the bridle classes. In the two-rein classes, riders first perform a rein work pattern and then work a cow down the fence. You’ll be able to watch the Open and Non Pro two-rein horses in action here in Fort Worth.
THE BRIDLE
A finished bridle horse is considered the most elite competitor in the reined cow horse world. If they started their show career as a 3-year-old, and progressed continuously through the stages of training and competition, these bridle horses are now highly experienced 7-year-olds and older, ready to perform at the highest level. Bridle horses are shown in a shanked, ported bit with a cricket, in the traditional closed romal reins with the popper attached. The rider’s hand must be
closed on the reins with no fingers between at any time.
At the Snaffle Bit Futurity, bridle horses will compete in the Open,
Limited Open, Non Pro, Intermediate Non Pro and Novice Non Pro Bridle class, depending on the rider’s eligibility. They will be judged on rein work and fence work only.
An increasingly popular division at NRCHA premier events is the Bridle Spectacular. Like the futurities and derbies, Bridle Spectacular horses compete in herd work, rein work and fence work or boxing for Limited division riders – often for very rich purses.
Another avenue for bridle horses is the four-event, or all-around competition, where steer-stopping is added to the herd/rein/fence lineup. The signature event of this kind is the NRCHA World’s Greatest Horseman, part of the annual NRCHA Celebration of Champions, held next February in Fort Worth, Texas.
At the 2018 Snaffle Bit Futurity, Stephanie Kuhn piloted her bridle horse, CD Smooth Kitty (Smooth As A Cat x Starlet CD x Royale CD) to two titles: 5K Non Pro Limited Champion and 1K Non Pro Limited Champion.
THE 50TH RUNNING SNAFFLE BIT
OF THE NRCHA FUTURITY
By Bonnie Wheatley
From the first turn on the fence in 1970 to the prestigious event it is today, the Snaffle Bit Futurity made for a number of historic moments.
ARGUABLY THERE IS NO OTHER EVENT IN THE EQUINE INDUSTRY THAT DEMANDS AS MUCH HEART, GRIT AND ATHLETICISM OF PARTICIPANTS as does the National Reined Cow Horse Association Snaffle Bit Futurity®, presented in 2019 by Metallic Cat. It’s destination “cow town” for the nation’s top equine tri-athletes when Will Rogers Memorial Center in Fort Worth, Texas, hosts the 50th running of the premier event for 3-year-old reined cow horses that runs October 4-19, 2019. Beyond its estimated payout of more than $1.2 million, the NRCHA Snaffle Bit Futurity perpetuates the revered Vaquero tradition at the organization’s roots to fans across the globe.
Sparked by their passion to preserve and advance the reined cow horse tradition, a handful of passionate volunteers of the California Reined Cow Horse Association (re-named the National Reined Cow Horse Association in 1987) staged the inaugural event in 1970. That first futurity drew 27 entries to the California State Fairgrounds in Sacramento. The win paid $3,900 to co-champions Bobby Ingersoll on Leocita Chex (King Fritz x Honey’s Best), owned by Fritz Strain, and Les Vogt on Wrong Key (Salero Bar x Diana Morelock), owned by Fred Mungia.
Little did those early-day organizers know then that the horse show of humble beginnings would evolve into one of the most popular events in the entire Western performance industry. Early growth was a good indicator of how fast the 3-year-old futurity
concept gained a foothold. In only its second year, the 1971 Futurity attracted 45 entries. With continued growth it meant the creation of new classes.
In 1975, Non Pro and Ladies divisions were added to the schedule with Tyke Minetti on Doc’s Know How (Doc’s Cowboy x Flowergirl Peake) taking the Non Pro win, and NRCHA Hall of Famer Dema Paul winning the Ladies aboard Bar Fly. By 1977, the Futurity had expanded to six full days with 208 Open entries. That same year saw incorporation of a six-judge system (three for the herd work and three for the rein and fence work), which was evolved into a five-judge system in 1982. Payouts, entry numbers, class offerings and activities continued to balloon, and in 2005, saw the first total pay over one million dollars.
Fast-forward half a century and the 2019 NRCHA Open Snaffle Bit Futurity Champion comes home $125,000 richer and etches their name among the most remarkable horsemen and horsewomen in history. Today, the Futurity features an appealing multi-level competition format for trainers, which consists of Open, CINCH Intermediate Open, Limited Open and Level One divisions at this year’s Snaffle Bit Futurity. The $126,000-added Non Pro Snaffle Bit Futurity, presented by Discount Tire, provides lucrative incentives for non professional reined cow horse enthusiasts to compete.
The 2019 NRCHA Snaffle Bit Futurity is on track to be one of the largest and most exciting to date—futurity entries increased substantially, the schedule includes the NRCHA Hackamore Classic, and includes NRCHA horse show classes boasting $95,800 in added prize money across all divisions to horses over the age of 4. Other ancillary events include three days of the DT Horses and American Rope Horse Association Futurity action, the preliminary and final rounds of the Fall Bash Cow Dog Rodear and addition of the Cowboy
Class Invitational, Cow Horse for Cutters Invitational and a newly-added Beginning Fence Work class.
OUTSIDETHE ARENA
Beyond the in-arena excitement, the ever-popular Western Bloodstock Sales provide the ideal opportunity to shop the elite reined cow horse market. Horse sales have been a tradition at the Snaffle Bit Futurity since 1971. This year, the NRCHyA introduces a new Stallion Auction in order to provide greater opportunity to prospective breeders and stallion owners alike who are attending the Snaffle Bit Futurity.
The NRCHA Hall of Fame Banquet and Old Timer’s Reception are two gatherings dedicated to the rich heritage of the Snaffle Bit Futurity and those intimately involved in its storied history. The Old Timer’s Reception takes place at 5 p.m. on Wednesday, October 16, while NRCHA legends will be celebrated at the Hall of Fame Banquet later in the evening at 7 p.m. in the Round Up Inn.
Warning—if you attend the Snaffle Bit Futurity once, you’ll be hooked for every year to come!

The AQHA Ranching Heritage Challenge showcases ranch-bred horses during the NRCHA Snaffle Bit Futurity®.
The National Reined Cow Horse Association has once again teamed with its alliance partner, the American Quarter Horse Association, to produce the AQHA Ranching Heritage Challenge at the 2019 Snaffle Bit Futurity in Fort Worth, Texas. The event offers Working Ranch Horse, Ranch Riding and Ranch Horse Limited classes for Open, Amateur, Cowboy and Youth competitors. Boasting an impressive $15,000 added, the AQHA Ranching Heritage Challenge is made possible thanks to sponsorship support from NRCHA, John Deere, Nutrena, the AQHA’s Ranching Journal, Weaver
Leather and award sponsors Martin Saddlery and BOXO Quarter Horses.
To be eligible for the Ranching Heritage Challenge, a horse must have been foaled at an AQHA Ranching Heritage Breeder’s ranch and nominated by that ranch. The AQHA Ranching Heritage Challenge highlights the versatility, soundness and willing attitude of American Quarter Horses that are ranch born and raised.
The Ranching Heritage Challenge is linked to the AQHA Ranching Heritage Breeders program, established to recognize AQHA’s ranching members who have steadfastly continued to maintain the ranching tradition by
raising American Quarter Horses for use in working cattle. NRCHA breeder sponsors such as the Four Sixes Ranch, Kalpower Quarter Horses and BOXO Quarter Horses are AQHA Ranching Heritage Breeders.
NRCHA breeders—you may be eligible for the AQHA Ranching Heritage Breeders program. To learn more, visit aqha.com.
Three-time Ranching Heritage Challenge winner Quahadi (Bet Hesa Cat x Ginnin Attraction x Tanqueray Gin) was piloted by Boyd Rice to the 5- & 6-Year-Old Working Ranch Horse win.

The $100,000-added World Championship Rope Horse Futurity adds a day during the 2019 Snaffle Bit Futurity®.
The World Championship Rope Horse Futurity returns to Fort Worth in 2019. This year, an extra day of competition is added to accommodate all the ropers. Open to 4-, 5-, and 6-year-old horses, the format consists of three full rounds of competition, plus a finals for top qualifiers. Horses advancing to the finals will keep their composite score from the preliminary rounds, and champions in each class will be crowned based upon the highest com-
bined score from three rounds and the finals. All exhibitors must be National Reined Cow Horse Association members to compete.
Divisions for the World Championship Rope Horse Futurity are Open Heading and Open Heeling, with incentives offered to the highest placing 4-yearold horse, highest placing No. 6 and lower header, and highest placing No. 7 and lower heeler. Scores are based on two judges’ scores, plus points from the time accrued on the run. Time
points are calculated by taking a base score of 80 then subtracting the time on the run. A 10-point penalty will be assessed for a broken barrier and 5-point penalty in the case of roping a leg. Riders are allowed to compete on unlimited horses per side and will pay $1,500 in an entry fee per side.
The event, sponsored by DT Horses, will kick off Thursday, October 17, at 8 a.m. in the John Justin Arena, beginning with the open heading. On Friday, October 18, all open and non pro heeling gos and short-gos will be held. Saturday, October 19, at 8 am, the non pro heading and heeling, plus short gos, will complete the event.
For more information on the ARHFA visit ropehorsefuturity.com.
J.D. Yates captured his second ARHFA World Championship win aboard DT Air Jordan, owned by Greg Hause, earning $24,500 at the event. Can this team do it for a third year?
wELComE CUTTErS!
Non pro cutting horse competitors interested in reined cow horse have been invited to compete in a special Cow Horse for Cutters event hosted by the National Reined Cow Horse Association held at the 2019 Snaffle Bit Futurity®. The crossover between the reined cow horse and cutting industries is more frequent than ever, and knowing that, the NRCHA invited several non pros cutters to get a taste of cow horse by riding a reining pattern and then complete a boxing pattern. For years, cutting horse-based owners have sent their horses to compete in NRCHA events with NCHA professionals such as Boyd Rice, Clint Allen, Clay Volmer and Geoffry Sheehan in the saddle. These long-time owners and supporters now have the opportunity to show their cow horses.
The special event is Tuesday, October 15, and will kick off with a 10 a.m. “Coffee and Questions” session in the John Justin Sale Arena. NRCHA professionals and judges will answer questions for these new reined cow horse riders. Following the session, riders saddle up for a go in the Will Rogers Memorial Coliseum. The Cow Horse for Cutters event follows the non pro bridle classes.
Event winners receive the following: Champion—CR Morrison bronzed finished trophy, 20X hat from Shortys Caboy Hattery; Reserve—Gist buckle; Top 10—NRCHA embroidered vest. Be sure to catch this special event during the Futurity.
roDEar rETUrNS: Cow DogS To ComPETE aT FUTUrITY
The National Reined Cow Horse Association and rodear organizers Merle and Sandi Newton join forces again to host the Cowdog Rodear Fall Bash during the 2019 Snaffle Bit Futurity®. NRCHA supporters Jeffrey and Sherri Matthews sponsor and organize the event, which was first held in conjunction with the Futurity in 2017.
Modern cow dog competitions showcase a handler and dog working together in a quiet and controlled manner to maneuver cattle. It is a point and timed event, with emphasis placed on the handler’s stockmanship as he/she instructs the dog through a number of obstacles. Handlers are horseback for the event.
In 2018, the Open title went to Merle Newton working Mike Jones’ dog, “Puncher.” The Non Pro Champion Austin Keys worked his dog, “Spur” to the win.
The event preliminary rounds will be October 8 and 9 in the John Justin Arena at 8 a.m. The final round is October 10 in the John Justin Arena following the Beginning Fence class.
In this invitational class, cutting horse competitors can try their hand in reined cow horse.
Austin Keys and his dog, “Spur,” maneuvered cattle through the obstacles for a perfect 90-point score and did it in the fastest time, winning the Non Pro title.
Now oFFErINg: BEgINNINg FENCE worK
The Snaffle Bit Futurity® sets the stage for the National Reined Cow Horse Association’s newest event, Beginning Fence Work. Non pro riders who have earned less than $750 down the fence but more than $5,000 in boxing are eligible to compete in this rein work and cow work class.
The objective is to use the one minute and 30-second time limit to work a cow in four parts: box on the first end, set up the cow and drive/ rate it down the fence to the opposite end, hold the cow and box it again, then drive the cow back down the fence past the middle marker to complete the pattern when the judge’s whistle blows. Riders will be competing for a $1,000-added purse and a plethora of prizes, including; a CR Morrison bronzed finished trophy, Gist custom buckle, pair of Cowboy boots, Gist trophy knife, Platinum Performance and much more.
Offered as a learning opportunity for riders desiring to go down the fence, the Snaffle Bit Futurity show is the perfect place for riders to showcase their growing skillset. For more information, visit nrcha.com/snaffle-bit-futurity/ or visit the show office.
CowBoYS ComE To Cow TowN F or INVITaTIoNaL EVENT
In 2019, the National Reined Cow Horse Association returned to their ranching roots and hosted two working ranch, cowboy-focused clinics, one in Texas and the other in Wyoming. The clinics’ goal was to bring show-pen skills and training techniques to the cowboys whose horses use reined cow horse elements on the ranch. Following the success of these clinics, the NRCHA is excited to offer the $2,000-added invitational NRCHA Cowboy Class at the 2019 Snaffle Bit Futurity.
An invitation-only event, these cowboys will compete in rein work, fence work and roping (a combination of steer stopping and limited cow work). With the amount of talented hands and horseflesh that attended these clinics, this Cowboy Class is guaranteed to be a thrilling event for spectators.
In addition to prize money, cowboys are riding to win a Gist buckle for high point in each go-round. Be sure to find your seat in the Will Rogers Memorial Coliseum on Monday, October 14, when the cowboys come to ride reined cow horse.
In beginning fence work, riders drive down the fence without making a fence turn.
Ranch hands filled the two clinics produced by NRCHA in 2019. Now, it’s their time to shine at Will Rogers Memorial Coliseum.
Ta KIN g T h EI r PL aCE IN hISTorY
The National Reined Cow Horse Association welcomes three new members to the Hall of Fame, and inducts Discount Tire Company into the Hall of Merit.
In 2019, the annual Hall of Fame Banquet, held during the National Reined Cow Horse Association Snaffle Bit Futurity®, honors horsemen Ron Emmons and Jon Roeser as well as Johnny Tivio, a great bridle horse, with induction into the NRCHA Hall of Fame. Joining the ranks of those who have made significant contributions is Hall of Merit inductee Discount Tire Company.
HALL OF FAME: RON EMMONS
While Ron Emmons may have started his cow horse career a little later than most, the Ione, California, horseman more than made up for less time in the reined cow horse show pen with some stellar rides. The two-time World’s Greatest Horseman champion, two-time Magnificent 7 champion and multiple American Quarter Horse Association World Champion, joins the ranks of the National Reined Cow Horse Association Hall of Fame members in 2019.

public until I was 30 or 32. I had some cows and worked on ranches, but got into showing Paint horses,” Emmons recalled. “I was [an NRCHA] member early on but I was focused on making a living and on the Paints.”
When life offered Emmons a chance to change gears, he jumped at the opportunity to focus on reined cow horse competition in 2004. It was what he always wanted to do, and brought Emmons back to his childhood horse memories.
“By golly, that is what I wanted to do! When I was a kid, growing up in Santa Barbara County, the Vaquero tradition is strong,” he said. “That is where it began in the early days when California still belonged to Mexico. The influence still is strong in Santa Barbara County. I was raised with a spade bit, and when I started in cow horses it was like going back to my roots.”
Over the years, Emmons rode several champions in the reined cow horse arena, including his first bridle horse winner, Tangys Classy Boy (Tangys Classy Peppy
x Crimson Sassy Chick x Crimson Three). But, it is Olena Oak (Smart Chic Olena x Fritzs Oak E Doakie x Docs Oak), the horse Emmons rode to an AQHA world title, countless NRCHA premier event wins and to two World’s Greatest Horseman titles that really propelled his career.
“I believe Olena Oak came along at the right time for me in my process of learning to show and do this event,” he said. “He allowed me to progress and be at the top of my game.”
With more than $846,000 in reined cow horse earnings, Emmons is nearing another milestone, the Million Dollar Rider Club. But first, he’ll become a member of the prestigious Hall of Fame, something that is an immense source of pride for the horseman.
“To be classed with some of the greats that are in the show pen means a lot, it brings a tear to my eye,” he said. “It makes me very proud.”
HALL OF FAME: JON ROESER
In 2019, Million Dollar Rider Jon Roeser takes his place in the National Reined Cow Horse Association Hall of Fame. The Meridian, Idaho, trainer joins his father, Jim, and older brother, Dan, with the distinction. Growing up, Roeser didn’t know a day when he was not horseback with his father or three brothers completing a number of chores on their ranch in Idaho.
Gifted with starting young horses as well as riding broncs in the rodeo arena, for some time, Roeser considered becoming a rodeo athlete instead of horse trainer. His dad’s suggestion to apprentice with other trainers turned the tide.
In California, Roeser first worked with Benny Guitron and then Greg Ward, both NRCHA Hall of Fame members and masters of cow horse. He rode with Ward for a number of years, soaking up knowledge and learning not only horsemanship but how to run a horse training business.
“That apprenticeship between my dad, Benny for a year and Greg for six years, was to learn, not hurry along to get somewhere [in my career],” Roeser said. “I knew I was increasing my knowledge. People say you learn from your experi-
ence, but you ruin a few horses before you make a good one. I was always really cautious. Through my lifetime, I feel I learned more from the horses than people.”
For many years, Roeser trained out of California before moving back to Idaho in 2016. With more than $1.6 million dollars in reined cow horse earnings, Roeser has claimed every major NRCHA event champion title, including the Snaffle Bit Futurity, as well as the 2005 World’s Greatest Horseman win. He’s given back to the association through his time serving on the board of directors and through the NRCHA limited aged events, cattle, ground, ethics and executive committees.
While his achievements more than speak for themselves, it is his work ethic and ability to take a horse from homegrown to the winner’s circle that makes him a hall of famer.
“I always rode backyard horses. I showed a lot of horses that weren’t much, you know? I rode in the pen a lot, though,” he recalled. “It is funny because I’ve had clients say that if I wasn’t as smooth I’d mark higher. They’d tell me to ride a little looser, go down the fence
like I might come off or something. But that was my thing, I was ‘Mr. Smooth.’ I always tried to be smooth and soft.”
Joining his family members and mentors in the Hall of Fame both humbles and honors Roeser.
“It’s one of those moments in life where I feel honored, and I don’t know what other words to use. Honored and proud,” he said. “I actually did something with my life!”
HALL OF FAME: JOHNNY TIVIO
When asked to describe Johnny Tivio, two words came to Monty Robert’s mind: “solid gold.” The stout, dark bay stallion is possibly the most noted all-around working cow horse in the western United States. The 1956 colt mesmerized countless fans with his incredible cow-working abilities.
Charles and Christie Araujo, of Coalinga, California, purchased a handful of Spanish mustangs that had been driven up on horseback from Mexico into the San Juaquin Valley. One of mares from the herd was a petite filly named Chowchilla Pee Wee, who eventually received an American Quarter Horse Association registration. The Araujos bred their band of broodmares to wellknown sire Poco Tivio (Poco Bueno x Sheilwin x Pretty Boy). On May 24, 1965, the small colt named Johnny Tivio was born.
At the young age of two, Johnny Tivio, then-owned by Mr. and Mrs. Carl Williams of Bakersfield, California, was shown by NRCHA Hall of Fame trainer Harry Rose. Carrying the hackamore around like a champion early in his show career, Johnny Tivio captured all major hackamore titles during his 3-and 4-yearold years at iconic West Coast cow horse venues.
California horseman Monty Roberts kept a close eye on the incredible equine athlete.
2018 World’s Greatest Horseman
“When we first saw him, he was two years old,” remembered Roberts. “Both [Don] Dodge and I said, ‘Oh my God. If we could ever get our hands on that horse, there’s the talent right there.’ ”
In 1961, during the horse’s 5-year-old year, circumstances changed and the opportunity to purchase Johnny Tivio presented itself to Roberts.
“Finding Johnny Tivio was like a prospector finding a five-pound golden nugget. Johnny Tivio just took me up and ushered me through one of the most incredible careers that one could ever imagine. Don Dodge rode him several times and got off of him and said, ‘Don’t let me ever get on him again, because I’m going to try to get him away from you somehow,’” Roberts recalled lightheartedly.
Johnny Tivio’s long list of achievements include California Reined Cow Horse Hackamore and Stock Horse Champion, Cow Palace All-Around Working Cow Horse, and the Rodeo Salinas Stock Horse Stakes Open Cutting Champion and AQHA Western Riding Champion. The fierce all-around competitor also
earned Register of Merit in calf roping and working cow horse, and the 1966 Pacific Coast Cutting Champion title, all with Roberts aboard.
“I was a rider, looking down the neck of one of the greatest horses that ever lived. I stayed out of his way as much as possible,” said Roberts. “For a horse to know how to rope a calf, head and heel a steer, dry [rein] work, cut and down the fence and western pleasure all in one day, there was something special about that horse, and it wasn’t me. It was something in his genetics.”
His lifelong caretaker summed up Johnny Tivio. “He did everything with class, including dying with class,” said Roberts.
On May 24, 1981, the stallion’s 25th birthday, Johnny Tivio passed away. This year, he is immortalized in the NRCHA Hall of Fame.
HALL OF MERIT
DISCOUNT TIRE COMPANY
For Scottsdale, Arizona-based Discount Tire, their employees are like family. And, it was family that brought the nation-wide tire company to the National Reined Cow Horse Association. Company founder Bruce T. Halle’s daughter, Susan Lyle, married her passion for cow horses with her father’s company in 2014 when Discount Tire became the title sponsor of the Snaffle Bit Futurity Non Pro divisions. This year, the company’s generous support is being recognized with induction to the NRCHA Hall of Merit.
While it may be the world’s largest tire and wheel dealer with more than 1,000 stores across the country, Discount Tire and the cow horse industry share many of the same values. The five principles Halle founded his company upon are: be honest, work hard, have fun, be grateful and pay it forward. Sounds a lot like the cow horse way, right?
“The company’s principles and the way Bruce valued his employees led naturally to supporting the NRCHA and how people help each other out in the horse world,” said Wilson Lyle. “It is a fun sport for Susan and we are glad to give back from the company to the NRCHA.”
Susan, a Colorado-based non pro competitor who trains with Blue Allen, wanted to provide incentive for her fellow riders to compete. That was where the non pro, non pro limited, and amateur money incentive from Discount Tire came into play.
“All the money went to the pros and the non pros didn’t receive a lot of incentive money,” said Susan. “The camaraderie is
NRCHA & EVENT SPONSORS
awesome; people help and cheer for each other. Dad was all about helping other people and I think it carries through to supporting the NRCHA. We are helping people, and that was his main focus in life. He was a devout person who was about making people feel good. He was very proud of me and of what I accomplished in getting national recognition [through NRCHA]. I am proud that I’m his daughter.”
Bruce Halle started his company with six tires and no plan, as laid out in his book, much the same way some horsemen start with one or two prospects and build on that. Through hard work, the company became a success, paralleling how a competitor works hard to earn their win. Please join the NRCHA in welcoming Discount Tire into the Hall of Merit on Wednesday, October 16.

An added bonus to buying a reined cow horse is the Western Bloodstock NRCHA Sale Incentive purse, drawing from $120,000 in 2019.
The 2019 National Reined Cow Horse Association’s Snaffle Bit Futurity® once again offers two days of sales where bidders buy the industry’s top prospects, proven performance horses and broodmares. Managed by Western Bloodstock, Ltd, the 2019 sale has a big marker to reach in order to top last year’s high-selling horse, Roadreyge, that sold for $100,000. For Jeremy Barwick, owner of Western Bloodstock, the high prices match the high quality of horses.
“The quality of what the sellers are offering and how the sales are structured brings buyers to the sale,” said Barwick. “When you can come to this show and see what is working in the show pen and then literally walk right into these sales that are offering just that, it is easy. All the yearlings, 2-year-olds and performance horses have radiographs right here in the sale repository, there is no other place that you can get this combination.”
Buyers are also making a purchase for their future, with the “new” Western Bloodstock NRCHA Sale Incentive Purse paying out for the first time in 2019. Horses purchased at the last two sales that are shown at the Snaffle Bit Futurity are eligible for a large incentive purse.
“Because of the numbers of sale horses offered in the 2017 sales, the sale incentive purse reached over
$120,000,”Barwick said. “It will be very exciting to watch which sale horses take home that added money in the show pen.”
In 2018, 173 horses sold for an average of $13,620. The high-selling broodmare, SDP Got Fancy Genes, sold for $34,000 to Alvin Fults. The second-high-selling horse of the sale was a 3-year-old stallion, One Shiney Metallic, that sold to Don and Teresa Martin for $64,000.
$19,600, was
the Open 2-Year-Old Sale Incentive.
The 2-year-old sale preview is Thursday, October 17, in the Watt Arena 30 minutes after the show ends. Starting on October 18th, an afternoon sale session in the Watt Arena features the Performance Horse Sale to be followed immediately by the Select 2-Year-Old Sale. At the completion of the 2-YearOld Sale, the bidders and consignors will move to the John Justin Arena for
the first session of the NRCHA Select Yearling and Broodmare Sale. The second session of the NRCHA Select Yearling and Broodmare Sale begins at 9 a.m. on Saturday, October 19th, and will be in the John Justin Arena. For a corporation to continue to provide financial support for an equine event means that the industry is on the right track, and the reined cow horse industry is definitely headed in the right direction. In 2019, not only did Metallic Cat join as the presenting sponsor of the National Reined Cow Horse Association Snaffle Bit Futurity®, but Discount Tire, CINCH and Holy Cow Performance Horses renewed their support of the event.
Metallic Cat’s offspring have won more than $26 million dollars in the arena, in all disciplines, and that includes reined cow horse champions Call Me Mitch and Cats Picasso. In 2018, Metallic Cat joined the NRCHA Million Dollar Sire club, and less than one year later, surpassed the $2 million dollar threshold. Owned by Bobby Patton’s Rocking P Ranch in Weatherford, Texas, the Snaffle Bit Futurity is excited to have Metallic Cat as the presenting sponsor. Visit metalliccat.com for information about the stallion.
“The last few years have been an exciting adventure into the performance horse world. The athleticism and intelligence of these horses continue to amaze me on a daily basis,” said Patton. “Rocking P Ranch is thrilled
to expand our relationship with the NRCHA. Being a part of the 50-year celebration of the NRCHA Snaffle Bit Futurity is quite an honor for team Metallic Cat.”
Longtime sponsor CINCH returns for the sixth year, providing the Intermediate Open competitors with $30,000 guaranteed. The Western wear company, based in Denver, Colorado, supports the equine industry by creating quality jeans, shirts and casual wear that stands up to the horse show lifestyle. The added money in the Intermediate Open division helps upand-coming reined cow horse trainers continue to pursue their careers. Visit cinchjeans.com for information about the company’s quality guarantee and a directory of retailers.
For a sixth consecutive year, Discount Tire is the title sponsor of the Snaffle Bit Futurity Non Pro divisions, which brings the total added money for the Non Pro, Intermediate Non Pro, Novice Non Pro and Amateur to an impressive $100,000. The NRCHA welcomed the Scottsdale, Arizona-based company, the world’s largest tire and wheel retailer, to its corporate partner family in 2014.With more than 1,000 stores in 35 states, Discount Tire, which does business under the name America’s Tire in parts of California, is
the most recognized name in the industry. In 2019, the company is honored with induction into the NRCHA Hall of Merit. Learn more about Discount Tire on the web at discounttire.com.
“The continued support from our sponsors benefits the entire reined cow horse industry,” says Jay Winborn, NRCHA executive director. “The investment made in breeding, training and competing on a cow horse is substantial, and the incentives provided through higher purses boosted by our great sponsors reflects the dedication to our industry.”
In 2019, Holy Cow Performance Horses’ longtime support of reined cow horse events continues to shine a spotlight on the supreme goal in training a reined cow horse—a bridle horse. The sponsorship gives $50,000 added to the Open Bridle Spectaculars, held at the Stakes and Derby Open, and an additional $25,000 added to the Open Bridle held at the Snaffle Bit Futurity. Phil and Nancy Crawford-Hall, owners of Holy Cow Performance Horses, have facilities in Santa Ynez, California, and Weatherford, Texas, and have horses showing in reined cow horse and cutting events.
