For the past four years, the National High School Finals Rodeo, held in July, has provided an opportunity to do a barometric reading of an important segment of the reined cow horse market. Visiting face-to-face with the NHSFR reined cow horse contestants, their parents and trainers is an excellent place to develop a feel for what kind of horses are in demand. Without a doubt, our youth and the high school rodeo contestants are seeking finished bridle horses with training and talent to carry them to the winner’s circle. The same is true for much of our Non Pro Limitedeligible folks who are either new to the sport or continuing to step up the levels in our boxing divisions.
Many of our top trainers with Non Pro and Youth coaching programs will tell you these horses are not the easiest to find. Consequently, they’re worth
prime money. What this tells me is that it is worthwhile for owners to work toward this resale market with the young stock purchased through our Snaffle Bit Futurity Sales, while also taking advantage of the incentives that are available all through the process.
Think about it: When the gavel falls on a Select Yearling or Select 2-Year-Old from the Snaffle Bit Futurity Sales, it’s worth it for the new owner to get him in a Futurity program. As a sale graduate, these prospects are eligible for big incentive purses as well as the Futurity prize money. All Sale horses are also eligible for the NRCHA Stallion Stakes as 4- and 5-year-olds, another event offering incentive checks along with prize money for top finishers.
When these horses turn 6 years old, the new Two Rein Spectacular events offered at our NRCHA premier events provide a venue for still more earnings, as well as crucial show experience. Bridle horse buyers will be watching these two rein entries closely during the year.
A robust horse market is an important element of the NRCHA’s continued growth and vigor. The association is striving to create as many incentives as possible to keep your horses training, competing, and gaining value, and eventually joining the ranks of those treasured bridle horses that help attract new participants to our sport. We look forward to seeing you this fall at the Snaffle Bit Futurity Sales!
All the best, Jay Winborn

The Snaffle Bit Futurity is the most highly anticipated premier event of the National Reined Cow Horse Association’s show year. For the second year, the Futurity is in Fort Worth, Texas, and we expect another very successful show in the exhibitor-friendly and spectator-friendly Will Rogers Equestrian Center facility.
The 3-year-old horses competing this fall are more than just well trained athletes. These horses embody the dreams and goals of the breeders, owners and trainers responsible for getting them to the Snaffle Bit Futurity. Each horse’s progression and path has been different, but all the horses showing at the pre-futurities around the country have something in common. Someone believed in them enough to take on the challenge of making them into Futurity contenders.
Our segment of the Western performance industry is unique in that our Futurity horses are required to master not just one event, but three events. It is truly a triathlon. All of us who train for these 3-year-old events do so with our horses’ longevity in mind. The
Futurity year is just the beginning of what we hope will be long and successful careers. While it is gratifying to win futurity paychecks, the goal that goes hand-in-hand is to set a strong foundation for the 4- and 5-year-old derby and hackamore events, and then the two-rein and bridle events.
With longevity in mind, the NRCHA made an adjustment to the Open finals structure to make things easier on horses that qualify for more than one Open division finals. Instead of having to run twice, as in years past, we have set things up so these 3-year-olds will only have to make one run. We want this Futurity class of 2018 to return to Fort Worth in future years to compete in our lucrative Hackamore Classic and our horse show classes, and reducing stress on them as 3-year-olds is one way to help make that happen.
We can’t avoid being caught up in the hectic pace of Futurity season, and I remind everyone—myself included— to stay true to your horses, trust your training process and enjoy the ride.

What are the judges looking for in the next Snaffle Bit futurity Champion?
is a breakdown of the three events.
It’s show time! No where in the world of equestrian sport will you find more spine-tingling action than in the reined cow horse arena. These finely tuned equine athletes will dazzle you with their athleticism, cow sense, courage and finesse.
The 3-year-old horses in the Snaffle Bit Futurity are judged in herd work, rein work and cow work. Contestants in the ancillary horse show classes –hackamore, two-rein and bridle – are judged in rein work and cow work only.
HeRD WORK
In this event, one horse and rider enters a group of cattle, separates a single animal, and then prevents it from returning to the herd. The horse should step into the herd willingly and quietly, sorting out one cow without disturbing the rest. There is a twoand-a-half minute time limit for each run, and two or three cattle are worked during that time.
Judges are impressed by horses that display exceptional courage while holding a difficult cow, work on a
loose rein with a bright, alert expression, maintain proper position on the cow and spend the majority of the two-and-a-half minutes holding a cow out front.
Judges also will deduct for losing a cow, failure to control the cow, insufficient working time, low degree of difficulty, or lack of eye appeal.
ReiN WORK
The rein work is the only phase of cow horse competition that does not involve a cow. Sometimes described as the equestrian equivalent of figure skating, horse and rider perform a

pattern with specific maneuvers: fast and slow circles, lead changes, spins, sliding stops and backing up. In the reined work, judges look for a horse that is willingly guided, with little or no apparent resistance. Points are deducted for disobedience or deviation from the pattern, while credit is earned if the maneuvers are performed with extra speed and finesse in a manner that is pleasing to watch.
COW WORK
The cow work, also called the fence work, is the final, adrenaline-fueled stage of reined cow horse competition. Fortunes can rise and fall in a split second during this fast paced event, and the outcome of the Snaffle Bit Futurity is not certain until the fence work is complete. The key to a good score is

maintaining control of the cow at all times.
After horse and rider enter the arena, a single cow is pushed through the gate at the opposite end. The horse must first “box” the cow, or hold it at the end of the arena, maintaining control and staying in proper working position. Next, when the rider decides the time is right, he allows the cow to run down the long side of the arena and turns it on the wall. This first turn must take place after the center marker, but before the first penalty marker near the corner. Horse and rider must turn the cow a second time in the other direction, and may make additional turns on the fence before taking the cow into the open arena and maneuvering it in a 360-degree circle each way.
The most controlled cow work, with the highest degree of difficulty and the best form, scores the highest.
SCORiNG
Five judges are scoring the action at the Snaffle Bit Futurity. They all have the NRCHA’s highest 3A judge’s credential. Judge’s Monitor for the 2018 Snaffle Bit Futurity is NRCHA Director of Judges, Bill Enk, who will be officiating along with Chris Benedict, Bobby Ingersoll, Smoky Pritchett, Wade Reaney and Dan Roeser.
Judging the Hackamore Classic, horse show classes and AQHA Ranching Heritage portions of the competition are Frank Craighead and Jaime Beamer. In the five-judge system, the high score and low score are thrown out, and the remaining three scores are
added up to achieve the final score. For example, if a horse receives a score of 219, it averaged a 73 from each judge.
All events are scored using a plus and minus system for each maneuver. If a rider incurs penalty points, they are deducted from the overall score.
A score of 70 is considered average. Each contestant begins with a 70 as soon as they enter the arena. Each maneuver receives a plus, a zero, or a minus from the judge. Plus indicates an above-average performance, zero means it was done correctly, and minus means a below-average maneuver.
Anything above 70 means horse and rider earned credit during the run, while a score below 70 means something went wrong; either the maneuver quality was poor or penalties were incurred.

The evoluTion of a reined Cow horSe
the training of a reined cow horse is a methodical and meticulous process, taking years to reach the end result so prized by the vaqueros – the finished bridle horse.
reined cow horses are first eligible to compete in snaffle bit futurities as 3-year-olds. For many successful show horses, this is only the beginning. Beyond the futurities, three more show divisions await. The training process is a progression, with each stage building upon the one before it. The various phases of training beyond the snaffle bit are showcased here in Fort Worth with competitive divisions for cow horses aged 4 and up.
tHe HACk AmoRe yeARS
When young cow horses are 4- and 5-year-olds, they become eligible for the hackamore class. To showcase the traditional cow horse evolution, the Hackamore Classic was joined with the Snaffle Bit Futurity in 2016. The Hackamore Classic provides hackamore horses two opportunities to compete in Fort Worth: in the threeevent herd/rein/cow work derby that makes up the Hackamore Classic; and in the Open, Intermediate Open, Limited Open and Non Pro Hackamore horse show classes where entries perform a rein work pattern and work a cow down the fence immediately after.
The hackamore is the traditional bitless headgear. It consists of a bosal, a braided noseband usually made of rawhide or leather, and a closed rein called a mecate. The customary mecate material is horsehair, but mohair or
synthetics are also common and legal in the show pen.
In the NRCHA Hackamore Classic derby, there are classes for Open, Intermediate Open, Limited Open, Level 1 Limited Open and Open Novice Horse riders. Non-professional riders may compete in the Non Pro, Intermediate Non Pro and Novice Non Pro, or Amateur classes. Eligibility is based on rider earnings. There is also a Non Pro Limited class (herd/rein/boxing) for Non Pro riders who do not go down the fence.
tHe t wo-ReiN
When reined cow horses turn 6, they are no longer eligible to be shown two-handed. At this age, they begin the transition to bridle horse status via the tworein, when a bridle is added to the hackamore. Two-rein horses are shown one-handed in a bit with shanks, a non-jointed mouthpiece, a port, and a roller, or “cricket.” Under the bridle, horses wear a second headstall with a pencil-thin bosalito, a narrower version of the hackamore bosal with a skinny mecate rein. The rider holds two sets of reins: the closed rawhide romal, which is attached to the bridle bit, and the thin mecate rein, which connects to the bosalito. Riders may guide the horse with
both sets of reins and are permitted to use one or more fingers between the reins to direct the horse.
Horses may show only one season in the two-rein division. During this year, they may also enter the bridle classes.
Sarah dawson and Shine Smarter (wR this Cats Smart x Shiney tari x Shining Spark) scored a 442 composite to win the 2017 open Hackamore class with a 448 score.
Phillip Ralls piloted Call me mitch (metallic Cat x miss Hickory Hill x docs Hickory) to the open two Rein win with a score of 439.
In the two-rein classes, riders first perform a rein work pattern and then work a cow down the fence (or box, depending upon the rider’s eligibility). You’ll be able to watch the Open and Non Pro two-rein horses in action here in Fort Worth.
tHe BRidle
A finished bridle horse is considered the most elite competitor in the reined cow horse world. If they started their show career as a 3-year-old, and progressed continuously through the stages of training and competition, these bridle horses are now highly experienced 7-yearolds and older, ready to perform at the highest level. Bridle horses are shown in a shanked, ported bit with a cricket, in the traditional closed romal reins with the popper attached. The rider’s
hand must be closed on the reins with no fingers between at any time.
At the Snaffle Bit Futurity, bridle horses will compete in the Open, Limited Open, Non Pro, Intermediate
Non Pro and Novice Non Pro Bridle class, depending on the rider’s eligibility. They will be judged on rein work and fence work only.
An increasingly popular division at NRCHA events is the Bridle Spectacular. Like the futurities and derbies, Bridle Spectacular horses compete in herd work, rein work and fence work or boxing for Limited division riders – often for very rich purses.
Another avenue for bridle horses is the four-event, or all-around competition, where steer-stopping is added to the herd/rein/fence lineup. The signature event of this kind is the NRCHA World’s Greatest Horseman, part of the annual NRCHA Celebration of Champions, held next February in Fort Worth, Texas.

the Zoetis AQHA Ranching Heritage Challenge showcases ranch-bred horses during the NRCHA Snaffle Bit futurity.
The National Reined Cow Horse Association has once again teamed with its alliance partner, the American Quarter Horse Association (AQHA), to produce the Zoetis AQHA Ranching Heritage Challenge at the 2018 Snaffle Bit Futurity in Fort Worth, Texas. The event offers Working Ranch Horse, Ranch Riding and Ranch Horse Limited classes for Open, Amateur, Cowboy and Youth competitors. Boasting an impressive $15,000 added, the AQHA Ranching Heritage Challenge is made possible thanks to sponsorship support from Zoetis, NRCHA, John Deere, Ford, Nutrena, the AQHA’s Ranching Journal,
and award sponsors Martin Saddlery and BOX O Quarter Horses.
To be eligible for the Ranching Heritage Challenge, a horse must have been foaled at an AQHA Ranching Heritage Breeder’s ranch and nominated by that ranch. The AQHA Ranching Heritage Challenge highlights the versatility, soundness and willing attitude of American Quarter Horses that are ranch born and raised.
The Ranching Heritage Challenge is linked to the AQHA Ranching Heritage Breeders program, established to recognize AQHA’s ranching members who have steadfastly continued to maintain the ranching tradition by raising American Quarter Horses for use in

the $100,000-added World Championship Rope Horse futurity returns to the NRCHA Snaffle Bit futurity.
Following a tremendous first year at the National Reined Cow Horse Association Snaffle Bit Futurity, the World Championship Rope Horse Futurity returns to Fort Worth. Open to 4-, 5-, and 6-year-old horses, the format consists of three full rounds of competition, plus a finals for top qualifiers. Horses advancing to the finals will keep their composite score from the preliminary rounds, and champions in each class will be crowned based upon the highest combined score from three rounds and the finals. All exhibitors
must be National Reined Cow Horse Association members to compete.
Divisions for the World Championship Rope Horse Futurity are Open Heading and Open Heeling, with incentives offered to the highest placing 4-year-old horse, highest placing No. 6 and lower header, and highest placing No. 7 and lower heeler. Scores are based on two judges’ scores, plus points from the time accrued on the run. Time points are calculated by taking a base score of 80 and subtracting the time on the run. A 10-point penalty will be assessed for a broken barrier
and 5-point penalty in the case of roping one leg. Riders are allowed to compete on unlimited horses per side and will pay $1,500 an entry fee per side.
The event, sponsored by DT Horses, will kick off Thursday, October 18, at 8:00 a.m. in the John Justin Arena, beginning with the Open and Non Pro heading followed by a short go. On Friday, October 19, at 8:00 a.m., the heading Open and Non Pro will compete followed by a short go.

Cattle Dogs take Center Arena at Cowdog Rodear fall Bash finals held during the Snaffle Bit futurity
The National Reined Cow Horse Association has once again teamed up with rodear organizers Merle and Sandi Newton to host the Cowdog Rodear Fall Bash during the 2018 Snaffle Bit Futurity. NRCHA supporters Jeffrey and Sherri Matthews sponsor and organize the event, which was first held in conjunction with the Futurity in 2017. Modern cow dog competitions showcase a handler and dog working together in a quiet and controlled manner to maneuver cattle. It is a point and timed event, with emphasis placed on
the handler’s stockmanship as he/she instructs the dog through a number of obstacles. Handlers are horseback for the event.
In 2017, Louisiana’s Keith Gilleon won the Open with his dog, “Reo,” winning $2,000. Tommy Blessing won the Non Pro with his dog, “Clyde,” and took home $1,500. The total payouts for the event exceeded $7,000.
The event will be held on Sunday, October 14, following the AQHA Ranching Heritage Challenge in the Coliseum.

the National Reined Cow Horse Association welcomes two new members to the Hall of fame, and Dom Conicelli to the Hall of merit.
In 2018, the annual Hall of Fame Banquet, held during the National Reined Cow Horse Association Snaffle Bit Futurity, will honor Todd Crawford and the great producing mare Magical Lena with induction to the NRCHA Hall of Fame. Joining the ranks of those who have made significant contributions is Hall of Merit inductee Dom Conicelli.

She started life as a runt and nearly ended up on the sales list, but Magical Lena (Little Lenas Legend x Swayback Magic x Early Tink) beat the odds to become a remarkable reined cow horse performer, elite dam, and now, a part of history in the NRCHA Hall of Fame.
Foaled in 1995, Magical Lena was bred by her owner, Joyce Pearson, of
By Stephanie Duquette
Hailey, Idaho. Pearson and her daughter, NRCHA Hall of Fame inductee and Million Dollar Rider Anne Reynolds, jointly operate a record-setting cow horse breeding program based at Reynolds’ Why Worry Ranch, in King Hill, Idaho. Pearson also bred and owned Magical Lena’s dam, Swayback Magic (Early Tink x Poco Belle 9 x Leo Belle 9), a 1977 mare that Reynolds also rode and showed.
“I liked [Swayback Magic]. She was really athletic,” Reynolds says.
Swayback Magic produced 11 foals prior to 1994, the year she conceived her final, most successful baby, Magical Lena. Swayback Magic had been diagnosed with cancer by that time, and Pearson wanted to try for one last foal. She chose
the young stallion Little Lenas Legend (Smart Little Lena x Dox Elegant Girl x Peppy San Badger), a 1991 model that has sired earners of more than $622,000.
“He was virtually unknown at the time we bred to him,” Reynolds says. “We liked the way he was bred, and my mom had traded a horse for a breeding share to him.”
Though fatally ill, Swayback Magic carried Magical Lena to term. But the old mare’s failing body could not meet the filly’s nutritional demands.
Midge A M es photo
Anne Reynolds and magical lena at the 1998 Snaffle Bit futurity. on the back of this photo, Reynolds wrote, “magical lena - the girl of the hour… one of my tearful moments after the reined work finals at Reno, she was fantastic.”
“Her mom, who had milked like a Holstein her entire life, wasn’t giving any milk. Magical Lena was really, really tiny. She was just a wisp of a horse,” Reynolds recalls.
Swayback Magic was euthanized when Magical Lena was five months old. The diminutive filly joined the rest of the Why Worry Ranch weanlings and continued to underwhelm Reynolds, who suggested Magical Lena should go down the road with a new owner.
“My mom was like, ‘Well, I think she’s kind of cute,’” Reynolds says.
So Magical Lena stayed. Over time, she outshined nearly every other horse in Reynolds’ career.
“She’s obviously one of the greatest horses that we’ve raised. Just an amazing athlete, producer, individual and show horse, so that was a big surprise and a great success story for us,” she says.
Magical Lena carried Reynolds to $170,980 in cow horse money from 1998 through 2007. Some of their greatest accolades were the 1998 NRCHA Futurity Non Pro Championship; the 1999 NRCHA Stakes Non Pro Championship; the 2000 NRCHA Derby Non Pro Championship and Open Reserve Championship; and the 2001 World’s Greatest Horseman Reserve Championship.
Reynolds has identified Magical Lena’s performance at the World’s Greatest Horseman, particularly the steer-stopping preliminaries, as one of her peak moments in the show pen. Although Reynolds had plenty of local jackpot and team roping experience in her past as a rough-and-ready Idaho horsewoman, she admitted she was anxious about roping at that high level of competition. The stalwart Magical Lena never faltered.
“I was scared to death,” Reynolds admits. “In retrospect, it was really a great run. I never picked up her head. She just ran out there and rated the steer,
I roped it and dallied, she slid, and I never even took hold of her. Looking back on it, it was really cool. I was very, very, very, very nervous and worried about that. I got lots of compliments on it, and some people said I should have won the go-round.”
The roping score helped her qualify for the finals, where she and Magical Lena finished as Reserve Champions.
Magical Lena was in foal during the 2001 World’s Greatest Horseman with her first baby, More Magic Please, a gelding by Chic Please that Reynolds trained and showed to the 2005 NRCHA Snaffle Bit Futurity Non Pro Championship and the majority of his more than $101,000 in NRCHA earnings. More Magic Please is now owned by NRCHA Non Pro competitor, Susan Lyle, of Basalt, Colorado.
In all, Magical Lena had 20 babies in her broodmare career. Fifteen of them went on to the show pen, and in the NRCHA, earned a combined $492,918. Take into account money earned in the cutting horse and reining horse arenas, and that number climbs to $577,588.
the back of this photo also has a handwritten caption by reynolds. “Magical lena at fresno in the n.P. finals, putting out 110% turning that cow and i’m putting out 110% hanging on. She marked a 223.”
While More Magic Please is Magical Lena’s top-earning reined cow horse offspring, her number one money winner in all disciplines is Magicality, a 2010 bay stallion sired by Reynolds’ NRCHA Million Dollar Sire, Very Smart Remedy (Smart Little Lena x Remedys Response x Docs Remedy). The versatile performer’s $153,143 in lifetime earnings break down to: $86,955 in the NRCHA; $62,376 in the National Reining Horse Association; and $3,812 in the National Cutting Horse Association. Magicality is on point to continue his parents’ dynasty, with his first foals arriving in 2016 and now being started under saddle.
Other top NRCHA earners out of Magical Lena include Magicality’s 2009 full brother, Very Black Magic ($94,133); Magicat, her 2011 daughter of Metallic Cat ($46,101); and Smart Magic Trick, a 2008 mare by Very Smart Remedy ($44,789).
Magical Lena’s contribution to the reined cow horse industry as a performer and a producer reflect the core values of the breeding, training and show pro-
gram in which the mare spent her entire life. Reynolds, the NRCHA’s only female Million Dollar Rider and the association’s most successful Non Pro competitor until she became an Open rider in 2013, listened carefully to advice handed down decades ago from fellow NRCHA Hall of Fame horseman Greg Ward, the iconic champion often referred to simply as “The Master.”
“He told me to keep my good mares, and so that’s what I did,” Reynolds says. “It’s really important, whether or not your mare has a lot of earnings, to know: What was she like to train? What was she like to compete on? Was she easy to train? Was she talented? Was she good to show? What was her disposition during that time? Because that is some information that is going to be really valuable, as far as how her colts are going to be to train and compete on. If she was an exceptional athlete, if she was trainable, if she had a good attitude, if she was good in the pen. If those things are true, then she’s going to be a better producer. The more you know about her pedigree and her parents and her mother, and her sire, too – if it’s all good information, it probably means she’s going to be a good producer.”
Magical Lena was all of those things and more. When the great mare was laid to rest at Why Worry Ranch in July 2015, the impact of her loss touched the entire reined cow horse community.
“She’s obviously one of the greatest horses that we’ve raised. Just an amazing athlete, producer, individual and show horse, so that was a big surprise and a great success story for us,” Reynolds says. “I feel privileged to have been a part of her career. She was an incredible horse in every way. She will be very sadly missed, even as we celebrate her talents, accomplishments and her tremendous contributions to the reined cow horse and reining industries.”
HAll of fAme toDD CRAWfoRD
Todd Crawford has a list of accomplishments longer than a 12-horse trailer, although he would be the last guy to brag about them.
“It’s kind of weird, talking about things that you’ve done. I don’t really talk a lot about what I’ve won,” Crawford says.
But the words tumble out with ease when the Blanchard, Oklahoma, horseman talks about his life’s work—training and showing reined cow horses, and providing leadership to the NRCHA to ensure its successful future.
“I enjoy it. I really enjoy learning new things and being able to do different things with horses,” he says. “There are so many things to try, and see how it works and see how far you can advance.”
Crawford recalls a conversation with one of his earliest mentors, the late horseman Dale Wilkinson, an icon in the reining horse industry.
“He told me once, and this was maybe
40 years ago, that he thought we were just beginning to scratch the surface as far as figuring out how to train horses and get them to perform to the highest level,” he says.
That remark took hold in Crawford’s mind. He’s revisited it often over the years, as his own record-setting career progressed. What would Dale Wilkinson think of today’s reined cow horses? The performances we call “average” would leave him speechless. And how far will we progress in another 40 years? Is there an upper limit? Those are the forwardlooking questions and concepts that inspire and motivate Crawford, keeping his enthusiasm as fresh as a newly minted rookie trainer.
Aboard Shinen metallic Cat (metallic Cat x Winenshineme x Shining Spark), owned by Russ mothershead, Crawford locked in the 2018 NRCHA Stallion Stakes open two Rein Reserve Champion title. Just one of Crawford’s many wins he continues to add to his show record.
“I find it exciting to think [the industry’s future], and its part of the reason I enjoy helping young people,” Crawford says. “I like sharing the tradition of the reined cow horse with them, the equipment and the history. Of course, all that has changed and adapted to what we do today as far as training and showing, but it’s important to preserve it and pass it along.”
It never occurred to Crawford that he would spend his life in any other way than as a professional horse trainer. Even the thought of a different career path makes him chuckle. Although his dad was a veterinarian, his family was not strongly connected to the equine industry, and horsemanship was a pursuit Crawford discovered on his own.
“When I was a kid, I started showing horses in 4-H, and then moved on to the Quarter Horse shows,” he remembers.
“I guess I got addicted to it. That’s all I really wanted to do.”
After high school, Crawford’s academic pursuits continued hand-in-hand with his horse industry aspirations. In 1976, Wilkinson offered his farm to Findlay College in Findlay, Ohio, as an equestrian training center for students. Crawford, an Ohio native, enrolled at Findlay College (which became University of Findlay in 1989) and, along with his future wife, Pam, became part of the first class of students to complete a bachelor of science degree from the equestrian program. He returned to teach at Findlay, and then launched the toughest career he would ever love: his own horse training business.
At first, he and Pam, who married soon after college, settled in Santa Ynez, California, digging into the work that Crawford describes as “not an 8-to-5 job.
It’s a 5-to-10 job most of the time.”
Crawford’s early emphasis on reining horses soon branched out to include reined cow horses. Although he has continued to show reiners throughout his lengthy and productive career, the multievent structure of cow horse competition took a strong hold.
“I was just trying to do something that looked like it was fun,” Crawford says, describing his early attraction to the NRCHA. “Personally, if I was a pleasure horse trainer— and not taking anything away from pleasure horse trainers— I could probably make a living, but I don’t know if I would have as much fun. Same if I was an all-around horse trainer or if I was a reining horse trainer. But the cow horse, doing the different events, is very enjoyable for me because of the challenges of trying to do three different events as good as you can possibly do,
on one horse, at one show. That’s a real challenge.”
Crawford’s first time to show a 3-yearold at the NRCHA Snaffle Bit Futurity was 1989, when the event was held at the Thomas and Mack Center in Las Vegas, Nevada. Those early show experiences are wrapped up in the other element he loves best about the NRCHA—the people. Being a reined cow horse newcomer and receiving immediate support in the form of raucous cheering from other competitors who didn’t know him yet, the late Shawn Renshaw comes particularly to mind for Crawford, is something he will never forget.
“The people are the most important, and honestly, that’s why I like to do it. It’s just like in Shawn’s case, that kind of camaraderie with the reined cow horse group makes it more special. Whether you win or lose,” he says.
Without a doubt, Crawford has put more in the “win” column over the years. He became a NRCHA Million Dollar Rider in 2006, the same year he won the Snaffle Bit Futurity Championship riding Smart Crackin Chic (Smart Chic Olena x Kwackin x Dual Pep), owned by Singleton Ranches. Crawford describes that moment in his career as connected to one of his favorite horses and one of his pinnacle achievements.
“The Smart Crackin Chic mare was a favorite, always. She was always a finalist in all the major events. Actually, she was usually in the top two or three, or the top five,” he says. “Winning the futurity was a big deal because I’d been second three times prior to that, so it was kind of like I finally got over the hump and got it done. It was kind of surreal, and a lot of fun.”
Then Crawford says, laughing, “Every day’s a pinnacle moment in my life, just getting to the next one, you know? Being able to go again.”
It’s a typical attempt to deflect the
conversation from his career accomplishments, but it’s impossible to tell Todd Crawford’s story without listing more highlights of his formidable resume. Five years after joining the NRCHA Million Dollar Rider club in 2006, he became the association’s first $2 Million Dollar Rider, reaching that milestone with his earnings at the 2011 NRCHA Snaffle Bit Futurity. He held that $2 Million Dollar distinction alone for four years, until a second NRCHA professional, Todd Bergen, passed the $2 million earnings mark in the fall of 2015.
Other notable show achievements for Crawford include the 2012 NRCHA Derby Open Championship aboard Sinful Cat (WR This Cats Smart x Sinful Playgirl x Freckles Playboy); a World’s Greatest Horseman Reserve Championship and multiple finals berths in that event, and dozens more titles in the NRCHA, the NRHA and the American Quarter Horse Association. Crawford was also the 2000 and 2004 United States Federation Reining Champion and the 2000 AQHA Professional Horseman of the Year. His earnings in all associations and all disciplines exceed the $3 million dollar mark.
Yet, this elite rider is the same humble horseman who can be found kicking cattle in and out of the arena at the National High School Finals Rodeo reined cow horse championships. He learned over the years to balance work and family, as he and Pam raised their daughters, Carter, now 27, and McKinnon, 24, in the often-chaotic environment of a leading performance horse program. Crawford is well known for his dedication to coaching non pro and youth riders. In fact, he admits he finds it impossible to turn down requests for his help, especially when it’s a youth rider asking.
“I like the kids. I really like helping them. I’ve probably overdone it, but because I’m close to Oklahoma City [location of the AQHA Youth World Championship
Show], I get a lot of extra kids. It’s very hard for me to turn them away or say no,” Crawford pauses. “Actually, I just can’t. Just because that experience is so important to them, and to what they do in their future.”
That same inability to say ‘no,’ he surmises, combined with a fundamental concern for the future of the NRCHA, is what also motivates him to serve on the association’s Board of Directors, including multiple terms as president, an office he accepts with some reluctance.
Crawford enjoys training horses and coaching riders. the how’s and why’s of both keep him striving to evolve in the industry.
Stephanie Duquette
“That part’s been good, too, because of the changes we made,” Crawford says, referring to a time when he was president as the NRCHA transitioned from using a outside contract management company to hiring a full-time internal office staff. “A lot of things went our way in terms of how it worked out. Those were big changes and it was a scary time for me because I was the president, but it ended up going in a positive direction and the association has grown and improved.”
Crawford’s quiet, committed leadership style mirrors his horse show demeanor. While competitive, that drive to win is not accompanied by any discernible swagger or ego. He admits he still gets nervous butterflies when he shows, and never forgets the equalizing effect that cattle have on NRCHA competitors.
“With two events involving cattle, that makes a fairly level playing field. We all know you can be a hero or you can be a zero at the end of the fine [cattle] work run. I think that keeps our group much more level about life, because you can be up so high and then get knocked down so low, so quick. It balances things, and for a lack of a better word, keeps everyone humble,” he says.
As hard as Crawford strives for the championships, finals berths and big paychecks, he derives tremendous satisfaction from the training process itself, and the challenge it presents.
“The biggest challenge is trying to find the right combination of ‘stuff.’ The right combination of training, the right combination of equipment, the right combination of cattle versus reining, the right combination of a daily routine to make a champion 3-year-old snaffle bit futurity horse,” he says. “That is a huge challenge. Obviously, nobody has the right combination that just ‘happens,’ and the biggest part of that combination is having the right horse. I guess that’s the fun for me, is how you get there. It’s a long, dif-
ficult, grinding road. But it’s enjoyable. And then you get to turn around a do it again the next year!”
NRCHA Hall of Fame status was never something Crawford expected. The honor leaves the veteran horseman nearly speechless.
“It hasn’t sunk in,” he says. “It’s hard to describe how one feels, because in a way, it doesn’t change anything. And in another way, recognition of a career… I don’t feel any different, but by the same token, this is a huge honor and it is not taken lightly.”

DomiNiC CoNiCelli
When Dominic Conicelli received the news of his NRCHA Hall of Merit induction last October, his initial reaction was disbelief. His friend, horse trainer and NRCHA Hall of Fame member Sandy Collier, revealed the surprise in a video played for Conicelli and the hundred or so guests at his 85th birthday party.
“I kept looking around, waiting for the guy to jump out and tell me it was a practical joke,” Conicelli says. “I don’t see where I deserve the honor, but I’ll take it. I don’t think I did enough to warrant it. It’s amazing.”
Conicelli, from Skippack, Pennsylvania, is likely the only person in the reined cow horse industry who would question whether he deserves NRCHA Hall of Merit status. The nominating committee was unanimous in its approval of Conicelli, a cow horse owner, breeder, and competitor, known to his wide circle of friends and fans as “Dom” or “Mr. Nice Guy.”
“I really am honored,” he says. “Whatever I did for the NRCHA, if I did it ten times over for any other group, they wouldn’t even know who I was. But in this association, if you do a little something extra, it’s recognized.”
Conicelli has made a tremendous
impression on the NRCHA at both the national and local level for some 15 years, soon after purchasing his first cow horse, Smokum Chicy (Smart Chic Olena x Smokums Miss Doc Bar x Smokum Oak) from Collier in 2005. He sponsors NRCHA premier event awards year after year, and injected fresh life into the Atlantic Reined Cow Horse Association.
The regional club, the heart of reined cow horse activity on the East coast, once struggled to stay afloat. When Conicelli became involved, his support and leadership buoyed it to NRCHA Affiliate of the Year status in 2015.
“They say I saved that association. I don’t know whether I’d take credit for that or not,” Conicelli says. He insists the real recognition belongs to NRCHA
Professional Mark Sigler, resident trainer at Conicelli’s cow horse facility, Kinda Silly Farm.
“Mark is the reason [the] Atlantic [Reined Cow Horse Association] is growing, not Dom Conicelli,” he says. “I just helped them out a little bit so they could keep going.”
Conicelli’s Kinda Silly Farm, a play on his own last name, is currently home to 23 reined cow horses “and five babies I haven’t named yet,” he remarks. The

facility maintains a welcoming, open door policy. Visitors can work cattle for free, and stay overnight for next to nothing.
“If I had to make money in the horse business, I’d have been out in the first 60 days,” Conicelli says, chuckling. “To me, it’s a hobby, and I enjoy the people. Anybody can come to my farm and use my cows.”
While Conicelli’s reined cow horses are close to his heart, his professional career has centered on a different kind of horsepower. He started an automobile dealership on a “wing and a prayer” back in 1957, and grew the business to what is now the thriving Conicelli Autoplex and Carriage Trade Auto Auction. Although the word “retired” does not accurately describe Conicelli’s relationship with the business he founded, he admits his three children do most of the work.
“I go in almost every day, believe it or not,” he says. “They ask me a question now and then to make me feel important.”
Conicelli, an only child, was born in 1932, during the Great Depression. One of his earliest memories of horses involves Thoroughbreds owned by his father’s employer.
“We would go up there and my dad would put me on them and walk me around. I remember their names,” he recalls. “One was Black Beauty, which was my favorite mare, and then there was Fiddlesticks and Baloney.”
As a teenager, Conicelli often used some of his newspaper delivery wages to rent horses from a local stable. He graduated from Consohocken High School in 1950, and attended Villanova University, working weekends on a steel company labor crew for 75 cents an hour, to pay his $240-a-semester tuition at Villanova.
Although he never forgot horses, they went by the wayside for a time as other life priorities took center stage. The Army
drafted Conicelli in 1954, serving two years in Germany. In 1957 he returned to Pennsylvania and married his late wife of 45 years, Florence.
By the time he reached his early forties, Conicelli had found his way back into the saddle. He started competing with field trial dogs, worked from horseback on gaited Tennessee Walkers. At that time, Conicelli looked disdainfully upon American Quarter Horses, which he regarded as clunky and unrefined.
“I couldn’t imagine why anyone would want to ride one,” he reflects, laughing.
But as fate would have it, he ended up owning a pair of Quarter Horses as compensation in a business deal. He didn’t want them, but then an offhanded suggestion changed everything.
“Somebody said, ‘Why don’t you get them in front of a cow?’ So that’s what I did. The horse drops down, the adrenaline goes, and that was the end of the field trialing,” Conicelli recalls.
At first, Conicelli fed his new adrenaline rush with team penning. By 2007, Conicelli was showing in NRCHA Non Pro Bridle classes. He responds matterof-factly to the observation that he began
his fence work career at approximately age 75.
“When I hit 80, I stopped going down the fence and started to box. I boxed, and then went right out and won Reserve Champion in the [Non Pro Limited] at the NRCHA World Show in 2012,” he says. “I was excited! When I came out of the arena and heard my score, I went by [NRCHA $2 Million Rider Todd Crawford] and said, ‘What do you think of me now?’ I must have been crazy.” While the 2012 Non Pro Limited Reserve World Championship is a highlight of Conicelli’s competitive career, in which he claims nearly $13,000 in earnings, he admits the NRCHA Hall of Merit honor makes him “a little weepy.”
“I’m really appreciative of everybody,” Conicelli says. “I’m still waiting for the practical joker to jump out. I’m waiting for the guy to pop up and say, ‘Ha ha! We’re only kidding.’”
Dominic Conicelli was 75 years old when he earned his first nrCHa non Pro Bridle money aboard Smokum Chicy (Smart Chic Olena x Smokums Miss Doc Bar x Smokum Oak), a mare he purchased from friend and nrCHa Hall of fame horsewoman Sandy Collier.

It PayS to Enroll
NRCHA Subscribed Stallion program adds value throughout the industry.
In the mid 1980s, the National Reined Cow Horse Association Board of Directors went in search of a promotional program for reined cow horse stallions that consistently sired NRCHA performing offspring. Other performance associations had incentive programs, and the NRCHA wanted to develop a unique identity for reined cow horse stallions and their foals.
That idea developed into the successful NRCHA Subscribed Stallion program, a far-reaching incentive that offers rewards from the show pen to the sale ring.
It’s a simple concept. Stallion owners subscribe their sire, in order for the offspring of a specific foaling year to be eligible to show in the NRCHA Stakes. This enrollment fee can be paid at any time, up through the foal crop’s 5-yearold year — although the subscription fee does increase annually as the foal crop ages.
For each year that a stallion is enrolled, his foal crop from that year is eligible to show as a 4- and 5-yearold in the NRCHA Stakes, one of the premier limited-age events for reined cow horses. Annually, the Stakes boasts a payout of nearly $300,000, and only the offspring of enrolled stallions are eligible to compete.
To show appreciation to the generous stallion owners, the NRCHA also presents a monetary award to the nominator of the sire of each Stakes division champion.
The Subscribed Stallion program is far-reaching, as offspring of those stallions are also given priority at the prestigious NRCHA Sales at the Snaffle Bit Futurity each year. It’s a program that adds value to the entire industry and creates a support system for the reined cow horse breeder by strengthening the market for the offspring of enrolled stallions. The NRCHA helps promote Subscribed Stallions and their offspring on its web site, in the pages of the Reined Cow Horse News, and in the NRCHA Futurity Sales literature.
As an example of the rewards awaiting offspring of Subscribed Stallions, the 2018 NRCHA Stakes Open and Intermediate Open Champion Metallic
Train (Metallic Cat x Sparking Train x Shining Spark), shown by Clayton Edsall, of Oakdale, California, earned more than $46,000 for owner Beverly Vaughn of Durango, Colorado. The 2018 Stakes Non Pro Champion, Tammy Jo Hays, pocketed a $8,481 check when she rode her gelding Metallic Sparks (Metallic Cat x Shine Smartly x Shining Spark) to the win. Fults Ranch, Metallic Spark’s subscriber, received $6,000. The complete Subscribed Stallion program terms and conditions, and an enrollment form, are available at www. nrcha.com. Don’t miss out on your chance to add value to your stallion and his offspring!

For a corporation to continue to provide financial support for an equine event means that the industry is on the right track. The increase in entries, superior quality of competition and dedication to the reined cow horse industry shown by exhibitors and horse owners is rewarded with increased purses. In 2018, the National Reined Cow Horse Association Snaffle Bit Futurity, presented by Markel, has the support of several returning and new sponsors.
Longtime sponsor Cinch returns for the sixth year, guaranteeing $30,000 to the Intermediate Open Snaffle Bit Futurity Champion. The Western wear company, based in Denver, Colorado, supports the equine industry by creating quality jeans, shirts and casual wear that stands up to the horse show lifestyle. The added money in the Intermediate Open division helps upand-coming reined cow horse trainers continue to pursue their careers. Visit cinchjeans.com for information about the company’s quality guarantee and a directory of retailers.

the 2018 Snaffle Bit futurity Sales, managed by Western Bloodstock, ltd., has a new schedule to better provide buyers the opportunity to purchase a futurity prospect or show horse.
For two days during the 2018 National Reined Cow Horse Association’s Snaffle Bit Futurity, the sale ring will echo with the calls of high bids on future futurity prospects and seasoned show horses. This year, Western Bloodstock, Ltd. and NRCHA President and Sale Committee Chairman Todd Crawford worked together to create a sale schedule that allows ample time for the preview and sale, and will not overlap with the Futurity Finals.
Starting on October 19th, an afternoon sale session in the Watt Arena features the Performance Horse Sale to be followed immediately by the Select 2-Year-Old Sale. At the completion of the 2-Year-Old Sale, the bidders and consignors will move to the John Justin Arena for the first session of the NRCHA Select Yearling and Broodmare Sale.
The second session of the NRCHA Select Yearling and Broodmare Sale begins at 9:00 a.m. on Saturday, October 20th, and will be in the John Justin Arena.
“We changed the Futurity schedule around to help the [young] horses showing, which helped the sale,” explains Crawford. “Instead of having the Futurity herd work on the Saturday morning of the finals, it is on Thursday. Now, no matter where your horse draws up in the sale, no consignor will have to
worry about their horse selling during the Finals.”
In 2018, approximately 243 horses sold for an average of $12,461 and a total sale of $3,028,100. The goal is to have more demand than supply for the Select Yearling Sale, which averages about 150 horses. Jeremy Barwick, owner and manager of Western Bloodstock, Ltd., says the quality of horses sold continues to improve.
“Breeding has gotten so much better through the years that the horse quality
has improved greatly,” says Barwick.
“I think we see that through all the shows with the competition being so stiff. Not only have the breeders done an excellent job breeding, but also the broad span of great trainers we have in all disciplines of the horse industry have contributed. I believe it will only improve year after year.”
