reined Cow horSeS in Cowtown
The Snaffle Bit Futurity is the most highly anticipated Premier Event of the National Reined Cow Horse Association’s show year. In 2017, the excitement is amplified to historic levels as the Futurity celebrates its new home in Fort Worth, Texas.
The “City of Cowboys and Culture” has so much to offer the NRCHA. We have already formed a productive partnership with Fort Worth through the annual NRCHA Celebration of Champions and World’s Greatest Horseman, held at the same venue as the Futurity, the historic and user-friendly Will Rogers Equestrian Center. When it comes to horse and cattle events, the folks in Fort Worth know their stuff, and this community has embraced the NRCHA with an overwhelmingly warm welcome. I have full confidence that the 2017 Snaffle Bit Futurity will be a once-in-a-lifetime experience for all of us who are fortunate enough to be part of it.
Sharing our centuries-old reined cow horse traditions with a new, and broader, audience in the heart of the horse industry promises to take the NRCHA to the next level. We have already proven this event as a success before the first
horse even walks into the show pen here in Fort Worth. An unprecedented payout, explosive growth in entries and a world-class group of sale consignments are just a few early signs that the 2017 Futurity will be one for the record books.
The 3-year-old horses that compete each year embody the dreams of their breeders, owners and trainers. Similarly, the first edition of the Snaffle Bit Futurity in Fort Worth represents the most ambitious goals for growing our sport. My warmest and most sincere thanks goes out to our owners and sponsors who have committed to enrich this year’s purse with historic levels of added money, our NRCHA Board of Directors who have supported this exciting step for the Futurity, and our staff for diligently carrying out every detail.
As I write, I can only imagine what it will be like on October 14, Futurity Open Finals night, when our horses and riders walk deliberately down the Will Rogers Coliseum tunnel, a path traveled by legends. I can only imagine the roar of the crowd as they witness the grit and guts that our equine and human athletes never fail to display. I can only imagine the goosebumps, the tear-filled eyes and the unforgettable emotions that will engulf the room as we crown the best of the best as the Futurity Champion. I am thrilled and honored to share that experience with our audience in Fort Worth, as part of this event that dreams are made of.
All the best!

Welcome to Fort Worth, and the 2017 National Reined Cow Horse Association Snaffle Bit Futurity presented by Markel!
If this is your first time to experience the National Reined Cow Horse Association’s showcase for 3-year-old reined cow horses, you are in for a treat. I have competed in this event for the last two decades, and the excitement never seems to wear off. Many people involved in our sport—competitors, breeders, owners and dedicated fans— will think back to their first trip to the Futurity and recall that it was the beginning of their love affair with reined cow horses.
While the Futurity itself is the focus of our time in Fort Worth, there is much more to do, see, and enjoy while you are here. There are actually two NRCHA Premier Events rolled into one, because we have, once again, incorporated the Hackamore Classic with the Futurity schedule. The herd work, rein work and fence work derby for 4- and 5-year-old cow horses is always a fan favorite because of the traditional bosal headgear, and you are sure to see some great runs in that class. The horse show class lineup, including the two rein and bridle divisions, is not to be overlooked either. It’s a chance to experience the various stages of cow horse training, all
in one place, and a great opportunity to see some past Snaffle Bit Futurity Champion and finalist horses in a more advanced phase of their careers.
It takes an incredible amount of effort and commitment to develop a competitive Snaffle Bit Futurity horse. Our sport is unique among all the Western performance disciplines because our horses are required to compete in not just one, but three events, and none of them are easy. Over time, I have seen the level of horsemanship and the quality of horses become better and better. Presenting our 3-year-olds on the big stage, in front of an extremely horsesavvy audience here in Fort Worth, brings a whole new level of excitement and pre-show jitters.
To all the competitors, owners, and breeders with a connection to a Snaffle Bit Futurity horse: congratulations! It is a worthy accomplishment just to be here. All your hopes, dreams and hard work will be put to the test here at the Will Rogers Equestrian Center. I am proud to be a part of the reined cow horse industry, and to have built my career alongside so many outstanding people and great horses. We all want the same thing—to be a Snaffle Bit Futurity Champion—and I wish everyone the very best of luck and a memorable experience here in Cowtown.

What are the judges looking for in the next Snaffle Bit futurity Champion?
Here is a breakdown of the three events.
It’s show time! Nowhere in the world of equestrian sport will you find more spine-tingling action than in the reined cow horse arena. These finely tuned equine athletes will dazzle you with their athleticism, cow sense, courage and finesse.
The 3-year-old horses in the Snaffle Bit Futurity are judged in herd work, rein work and cow work. Contestants in the ancillary horse show classes – hackamore, two-rein and bridle – are judged in rein work and cow work only.
HeRD WORK
In this event, one horse and rider enters a group of cattle, separates a single animal, and then prevents it from
returning to the herd. The horse should step into the herd willingly and quietly, sorting out one cow without disturbing the rest. There is a two-and-a-half minute time limit for each run, and two or three cattle are worked during that time.
Judges are impressed by horses that display exceptional courage while holding a difficult cow, work on a loose rein with a bright, alert expression, maintain proper position on the cow and spend the majority of the two-and-a-half minutes holding a cow out front.
Judges also will deduct for losing a cow, failure to control the cow, insufficient working time, low degree of difficulty, or lack of eye appeal.
ReiN WORK
The rein work is the only phase of cow horse competition that does not involve a cow. Sometimes described as the equestrian equivalent of figure skating, horse and rider perform a pattern with specific maneuvers: fast and slow circles, lead changes, spins, sliding stops and backing up. In the reined work, judges look for a horse that is willingly guided, with little or no apparent resistance. Points are deducted for disobedience or deviation from the pattern, while credit is earned if the maneuvers are performed with extra speed and finesse in a manner that is pleasing to watch.
Russell Probert earned the high score in the 2016 Snaffle Bit futurity Open herd work preliminaries with a 222.5 on Darkestsideoftheboon (One time Pepto x Athleta x Smooth As A Cat), owned by eric freitas, Santa Maria, California, and bred by Gale force Quarter Horses, Conway, South Carolina.
Step to the light (CD lights x Shinersdiamondjackie x Shining Spark), owned and bred by Kelly Gowing and ridden by Justin Wright, was the high scoring horse of the 2016 Snaffle Bit futurity Open rein work preliminaries with a 225.
COW WORK
The cow work, also called the fence work, is the final, adrenalin-fueled stage of reined cow horse competition. Fortunes can rise and fall in a split second during this fast paced event, and the outcome of the Snaffle Bit Futurity is not certain until the fence work is complete. The key to a good score is maintaining control of the cow at all times.
After horse and rider enter the arena, a single cow is pushed through the gate at the opposite end. The horse must first “box” the cow, or hold it at the end of the arena, maintaining control and staying in proper working position. Next, when the rider decides the time is right, he allows the cow to run down the long side of the arena and turns it on the wall. This first turn must take place after the center marker, but before the first penalty marker near the corner. Horse and rider must turn the cow a second time in the other direction, and may make additional turns on the fence before taking the cow into the open arena and maneuvering it in a 360-degree circle each way.
The most controlled cow work, with the highest degree of difficulty and the best form, scores the highest.
SCORiNG
Five judges are scoring the action at the Snaffle Bit Futurity. They all have the NRCHA’s highest 3A judge’s credential. Head judge for the 2017 Snaffle Bit Futurity is NRCHA Director of Judges, Bill Enk, who will be officiating along with Sam Rose, Pilot Point, Texas; Andy Adams, Gerber, California; Carl Gould, Raymond, California; Tom Buckingham, Bruneau, Idaho; and Al Dunning, Scottsdale, Arizona.
Judging the Hackamore Classic, horse show classes and AQHA Ranching
Heritage portions of the competition is Chele McGauly, Elm Grove, Louisiana. Dan Roeser, Marsing, Idaho, will judge the Hackamore Classic and horse show classes.
In the five-judge system, the high score and low score are thrown out, and the remaining three scores are added up to achieve the final score. For example, if a horse receives a score of 219, he averaged a 73 from each judge.
All events are scored using a plus and minus system for each maneuver. If a rider incurs penalty points, they are deducted from the overall score.
there was a tie for the high score in the Open fence work preliminaries at the 2016 Snaffle Bit futurity between horses ridden by two of the NRCHA’s leading ladies. Monica Caetano, lemoore, California, had a 221.5 riding Mister PBR (Mister Smart Remedy x Shes A Daisy x Smart little Pepinic), bred by Caetano and owned by PBR Partners.
Sarah Dawson, Perrin, texas, also had a 221.5 riding Dual N tomcat (tomcat Chex x Dual N Mary x Dual Rey), owned by her father, Richard Winters, and bred by Rick and Jalinda Covey.
A score of 70 is considered average. Each contestant begins with a 70 as soon as they enter the arena. Each maneuver receives a plus, a zero, or a minus from the judge. Plus indicates an above-average performance, zero means it was done correctly, and minus means a below-average maneuver.
Anything above 70 means horse and rider earned credit during the run, while a score below 70 means something went wrong; either the maneuver quality was poor or penalties were incurred.

While attending the nrChA snaffle Bit Futurity, enjoy Fort Worth’s historic northside district.
While National Reined Cow Horse Association competition, rodeos, cuttings and breed shows bring more cows to Cowtown than any other activity these days, lovers of the horse will enjoy a visit to the historic Fort Worth Stockyards.
A drover and his longhorns make spectacular viewing across the street from Billy Bob’s.
the fort Worth herd
At 11:30 a.m. and 4 p.m. each day, one of the most popular tourist attractions in the United States makes its way down East Exchange Avenue in Fort Worth. Comprised of 15 Longhorn steers that are attended by drovers wearing 19th century garb, the Fort Worth Herd recalls a time when Fort Worth’s post-Civil War economy was revived by the bovine. In the late 1860’s, free-ranging Longhorns were gathered and driven to railheads by daring cowboys. The cattle were worth between $1 and $4 in Texas, but would bring as much as $40 further north. It’s estimated that more than 4 million cattle moved through Fort Worth between 1866 and 1890. Between 1,500 and 2,000 head were in each herd and they traveled about 12 miles per day. In perfect conditions, the 520-mile Chisholm Trail, which ran from Fort Worth to Abilene, Kansas, took more than a month to complete. The Fort Worth Herd has been making daily drives since June 1999.
The stockmen of the Fort Worth herd represent the men and women of varying cultural origins who drove the cattle north. After each drive, they return to East Exchange Avenue to visit with tourists and teach people about the city and the ways of the old west. For more information, visit FortWorthHerd.com.

As you walk the streets of the Stockyards district, be sure to look at what’s under your feet. While some of the more than 10 million bricks that originally paved the Stockyards remain, you’ll also see a little bit of Hollywood with the Texas Trail of Fame. The bronze markers are fashioned to look like a Marshall’s badge and bear the names of people and groups who have made a significant contribution to the preservation of the history and grandeur of the Western way of life. Inductees include ranchers, preservationists, Comanche chiefs, cowboys, philanthropists and actors. This star is in honor of John Peter Smith, who
founded the first school in Fort Worth in 1854. He went on to become a surveyor and entrepreneur, was the largest landholder in Fort Worth and helped build the Stockyards. He served six terms as the mayor and donated much of his land to the city for cemeteries and hospitals including the county hospital John Peter Smith. Visit TexasTrailOfFame.org for more information.

With the arrival of the railroad in 1876, Fort Worth became a major hub for shipping cattle and so in 1887, construction of the Union Stockyards began.

As predicted, Fort Worth didn’t remain the end of the line for long, but the forethought of John Peter Smith saw that Fort Worth had lines that ran from north to south as well as east to west. By 1902, two meat packers – Swift & Co. and Armour & Co. – had begun construction. During World War I, the Fort Worth Stockyards was the largest horse and mule market in the world. The Stockyards enjoyed their busiest year in 1944 when 5,277,496 cattle were processed. By 1969 the number had dropped to just over 1 million and by 1986 fell to just 57,181.
The Stockyards originally covered 100 acres and was comprised of 2,600 cattle pens. Today, just 72 remain. Cattle are no longer sold at the Stockyards.

It took just 88 days to build the Cowtown Coliseum in 1908 – the same
year in which the venue hosted its first event – the National Feeders and Breeders Show. Since then the Coliseum has staged international opera singers, Russian dancers, the first nighttime horse show held in the United States, and in 1917 was the site of the world’s first indoor rodeo. The Cowtown Coliseum still holds open rodeos every Friday and Saturday night. Depending on the time of year, spectators may get to see some of the world’s top ropers such as Trevor Brazile and Tuf Cooper compete alongside the next generation of rodeo stars. It’s also home to the annual Red Steagall Ranch Rodeo, the semi-finals of RFD-TV’s The American and various bucking stock sales. A picture wall inside the Coliseum

Established in the 1890’s in Hell’s Half Acre, the White Elephant Saloon moved to the Stockyards in 1976 and resides on a site that has been a saloon since 1906. It was home to Fort Worth’s most famous gunfight that took place between Luke Short and Longhair Jim Courtright in 1887. Every February 8, the gunfight is re-enacted at the saloon.

Hanging your hat on the wall (or ceiling) of the White Elephant is by invitation only, which is extended by the owner to those who have contributed to the city politically, musically or financially. The White Elephant hosts live music seven nights a week and has been rated by Esquire as one of the 100 best bars in America.
Across the road in Booger Red’s Saloon, the bar in the historic Stockyards Hotel (one of Bonnie and Clyde’s hideouts), patrons can sit in a saddle to sip their beer.
While you can’t carry your gun in to a bar in the Stockyards, you can carry your beer outside. Bars like the one at the entrance to The Loveshack cater specifically to those who want to walk and drink. No trip to the Stockyards would be complete without walking through the doors of The Cadillac Cantina. It’s a favorite spot for cowboy athletes to drown their sorrows or celebrate their wins.

The city of Fort Worth was initially established in 1849 as a fort to protect settlers from the Native American Indians. A bronze of Comanche Chief Quanah Parker sits to the side of the Stockyards Visitor Center and in front of the Hyatt Place Fort Worth Historic Stockyards Hotel. Parker was the son of two cultures – an Anglo mother and a Comanche father. He led raids in both Texas and Mexico, including one into Tarrant County in 1871, but he also served as the liaison between his people and the Bureau of Indian Affairs. He encouraged the Comanche to become educated and take up ranching and farming activities.

2016, the national reined Cow Horse association (nrCHa) Board of Directors announced its decision to move the nrCHa Snaffle Bit futurity from the reno livestock events Center in reno, nevada, to the Will rogers equestrian Center in fort Worth, texas, beginning in 2017. With the venue change, came a date change from September 18-October 1, 2016, to October 3-14, 2017. Below nrCHa veterans weigh in on how the venue and date changes have affected their preparation for this year’s Snaffle Bit futurity, as well as how they expect the move to impact the show.
“We made adjustments last fall mainly based on the size of the arena. We started them down the fence sooner because we felt like the arena is narrower, and especially circling and being tougher on the colts. We wanted to make sure that they really knew their job down the fence. So, I would say we are a good five months ahead of schedule on their fence work.
“I’m excited about the exposure. And I don’t think we’re in danger of losing who we are. It’s a truly unique event. We’re not like the cutters. We’re not like the reiners. We have our own thing.”
tammy Jo Hays, nocona, texas
two-time nrCHa non Pro Snaffle Bit futurity Champion
“To bring our futurity, our biggest show of the year, to Fort Worth and be able to showcase it in the heart of horse country, I think everybody’s pretty excited about that. [Reined] cow horse has become a nationwide thing. We all know where its roots are, and where it started, and it is a West Coast tradition, but it has grown immensely across the nation.
“We were ecstatic when we were able to add more money because we’ve worked so hard to get to the point where we can start giving back and raise those purses, which gives the owners more incentive to bring those horses to town and show them. When people see that purse, I think that encourages people to get into it and try.”
todd Bergen, eagle Point, Oregon
nrCHa President and two-time Snaffle Bit futurity Open Champion
“Everyone that I’ve talked to is excited, including myself. I’m really looking forward to what Fort Worth has to offer.
“Our futurity is basically two to two-and-a-half months before any other futurity, and they’re only doing one event. A couple weeks where a person has a little bit more time, maybe the horse is working really well and you have some time to kind of let everything soak in.”

“I’m happy about the extra two weeks. It makes me feel better to have an extra two weeks. But when it comes down to it, we always seem to have them ready to show in September, so having them ready to show in October will just be that much better.”

ageS & STageS:
The evoluTion of a reined Cow horSe
the training of a reined cow horse is a methodical and meticulous process, taking years to reach the end result so prized by the vaqueros – the finished bridle horse.
reined cow horses are first eligible to compete in snaffle bit futurities as 3-year-olds. For many successful show horses, this is only the beginning. Beyond the futurities, three more show divisions await. The training process is a progression, with each stage building upon the one before it. The various phases of training beyond the snaffle bit are showcased here in Fort Worth with competitive divisions for cow horses aged 4 and up.
tHe HACkAmoRe yeARS
When young cow horses are 4- and 5-year-olds, they become eligible for the hackamore class. In 2016, for the first time, another NRCHA Premier Event, the Hackamore Classic, was held in conjunction with the Snaffle Bit Futurity. The Hackamore Classic provides hackamore horses two opportunities to compete in Fort Worth: in the three-event herd/rein/cow work derby that makes up the Hackamore Classic; and in the Open Hackamore, Limited Open Hackamore and Non Pro Hackamore horse show classes where entries perform a rein work pattern and work a cow down the fence immediately after.
The hackamore is the traditional bitless headgear. It consists of a bosal, a braided noseband usually made of rawhide or leather, and a closed rein called a mecate. The customary mecate material is horsehair, but mohair or
synthetics are also common and legal in the show pen. In the NRCHA Hackamore Classic derby, there are classes for Open, Intermediate Open, Limited Open, and Level 1 Limited Open riders. Non-professional riders may compete in the Non Pro, Novice Non Pro, Intermediate Non Pro and Novice Non Pro, or Amateur classes. Eligibility is based on rider earnings. There is also a Non Pro Limited class (herd/rein/boxing) for Non Pro riders who do not go down the fence.
tHe t wo-ReiN
When reined cow horses turn 6, they are no longer eligible to be shown two-handed. At this age, they begin the transition to bridle horse status via the two-rein, when a bridle is added to the hackamore. Two-rein horses are shown one-handed in a bit with shanks, a non-jointed mouthpiece, a port, and a roller, or “cricket.” Under the bridle, horses wear a second headstall with a pencil-thin bosalito, a narrower version of the hackamore bosal with a skinny mecate rein. The rider holds two sets of reins: the closed rawhide romal, which is attached to the bridle bit, and the thin mecate rein, which connects to the bosalito. Riders may guide the horse with both sets of reins
and are permitted to use one or more fingers between the reins to direct the horse.
Horses may show only one season in the two-rein division. During this year, they may also enter the bridle classes.
Raise A Smart Cat (wR this Cats Smart x Raise the Best x mr Sun o lena), shown by Nick dowers for owner Bill Stevenson, earned the 2016 Hackamore Classic open Championship.
the 2016 NRCHA futurity open two-Rein Champion was NRCHA million dollar Rider Zane davis riding Rubys Radar (one time Pepto x Ruby Bagonia x Peppy San Badger) for owner C Ranches, inc.
In the two-rein classes, riders first perform a rein work pattern and then work a cow down the fence (or box, depending upon the rider’s eligibility). You’ll be able to watch the Open and Non Pro two-rein horses in action here in Fort Worth.
the Bridle
A finished bridle horse is considered the most elite competitor in the reined cow horse world. If they started their show career as 3-yearolds, and progressed continuously through the stages of training and competition, these bridle horses are now highly experienced 7-year-olds and older, ready to perform at the highest level. At the Snaffle Bit Futurity, bridle horses will compete in the Open, Limited Open, Non Pro, Intermediate Non Pro and Novice Non Pro Bridle
class, depending on the rider’s eligibility. They will be judged on rein work and fence work only.
An increasingly popular division at NRCHA events is the Bridle Spectacular.
Like the futurities and derbies, Bridle Spectacular horses compete in herd work, rein work and fence work or boxing for Limited division riders – often for very rich purses.
Another avenue for bridle horses is the four-event, or allaround competition, where steerstopping is added to the herd/ rein/fence lineup. The signature event of this kind is the NRCHA World’s Greatest Horseman, part of the annual NRCHA Celebration of Champions, held next February in Fort Worth, Texas.
Bridle horses are shown in a shanked, ported bit with a cricket, in the traditional closed romal reins with the popper attached. The rider’s hand must be closed on the reins with no fingers between at any time.

Saturday, October 1, was decision time for 25 horses in the 2016 Snaffle Bit Futurity Open Finals. They had risen to the top of the field of nearly 200 preliminary entries for a shot at the coveted $100,000 Championship and the title, which represents a pinnacle moment for owners, trainers, and breeders alike. The young equine triathletes were piloted by capable horsemen and -women with a wide range of experience, from National Reined Cow Horse Association Hall of Fame Horseman Ken Wold, to newlyweds Chris and Sarah Dawson, each with two horses in the finals; to firsttime Open Finalist Tyson Benson, who celebrated his 24th birthday just days before the Futurity preliminaries began September 19 in Reno, Nevada.
When the second-to-last horse in the draw, Duals Lucky Charm, scored a 224.5 down the fence to lock up the championship for owners Mike and Robyne Stewart, the gelding’s trainer, 28-year-old horseman Kelby Phillips, knew everything had just changed.
“It’s great. I really don’t know what to say,” Phillips said in his post-win inter-

view, visibly emotional as he rubbed a hand across his forehead.
“We usually don’t have this kind of luck!” said Robyne Stewart. “I had tears in my eyes when they called out the score. This is something we’ve never experienced. It’s awesome.”
The Stewarts, who farm and ranch near Munday, Texas, never doubted the ability of longtime family friend Phillips to win at the highest level.
“We trust Kelby. If a horse wasn’t going to make it, he would be the one to step up and say, ‘Hey, let’s not waste any more money on this horse.’ We just trusted him and felt like we wanted to give him a chance,” Robyne Stewart said.
On the strength of that relationship, when the 2-year-old Duals Lucky Charm (Dual Smart Rey x TRR Pepcid Olena x Pepcid) caught Phillips’ eye in November 2015, his first phone call was to Mike

Stewart. The compact sorrel gelding with the narrow blaze had been well-started by a young horseman named Will Roden, who came on board during the Futurity as Phillips’ assistant at DT Horses. The Stewarts bought the horse, nicknamed “Will” after his original trainer, and enjoyed reports of his steady progress in Phillips’ program over the course of the next year.
Duals Lucky Charm’s road to the Futurity Open finals began when he placed fifth in the Open preliminaries with a 657 composite (216.5 herd/220 rein/220.5 cow). Phillips also showed the preliminary composite high-scoring horse, Cats About Wright (Cats Merada x Wright About Now x Hes Wright On), owned by his employer, DT Horses, with a 661 (222 herd/222 rein/217 cow). Phillips, with two horses in the Open finals, was one of five riders with multiple mounts. Chris Dawson, his wife, Sarah, and Nick Dowers also had two. California professional and past
Futurity Champion Tucker Robinson had three.
In the finals herd work, Duals Lucky Charm earned a 218, which tied him for third place. Next was the rein work, where an impressive 220.5 performance was the fifth-highest score of the go-round. After the first two events, Duals Lucky Charm and Phillips were in fifth place, but the leaderboard changed permanently after the team made a challenging steer look easy in the fence work final.
“When he came out, I knew he was going to be plenty of cow. [Friend and fellow trainer] Brandon Buttars had been telling me ‘Don’t weaken,’ so I was trying not to. Once I knocked him around down there on the end, I knew I had to go, because to be a big enough score to win, I knew we had to go with a little bit of cow. After the first turn, I knew he was good, because he’s always good after the first turn, if I can get him out of there. And then he circles really good. I know I can turn him loose and he’ll just hunt that cow on both sides,” Phillips said.
from second-to-last draw position in the cow work, Duals lucky Charm scored a brilliant 224.5 to seal the championship by two and a half points.
left to right: Duals lucky Charm, Kelby Phillips, robyne Stewart, robyne’s daughter, larami Stewart, her fiancé ryan Wakefield, and their son Miles. robyne Stewart and her husband, Mike, purchased Duals lucky Charm last fall at Phillips’ suggestion.
Emotions spilled over as Robyne Stewart did the math from her seat next to Larami, her fiancé, Ryan Wakefield, and their son Miles, and realized her horse had just won the Futurity Championship. She quickly sent text messages to her husband, Mike, who was antelope hunting in west Texas.
“He wasn’t there, but he was blowing our phones up because he didn’t have enough service to watch the webcast,” Robyne said. “I’m on cloud nine. I’m so happy for Kelby. He deserves it. He’s worked so hard to get where he’s at. There’s not a lazy bone in his body. He’s just a good kid.”

Dual N Tomcat, a small but mighty gelding purchased on a whim at the 2015 Snaffle Bit Futurity Select 2-Year-Old Sale, collected paychecks everywhere he went in Reno, from the 2-Year-Old Open Sale Incentive prize, a spot in the Futurity Open Finals, and the CINCH Intermediate Open Championship.
Shown by Perrin, Texas, professional Sarah Dawson, and owned by Dawson’s parents, Richard and Cheryl Winters, Dual N Tomcat (Tomcat Chex x Dual N Mary x Dual Rey), scored a 656 composite (218 herd/215.5 rein/222.5 cow) to earn the $30,000 paycheck. Since 2010, NRCHA Corporate Partner CINCH has sponsored the Intermediate Open division to guarantee that payout to the Champion.
“I thought he was great,” Dawson said, describing Dual N Tomcat’s performance in the Intermediate Open finals. “I’ve liked him all year. He was always so little, but he always tried so hard, and he’s been fun to train all year. It’s even more fun that my parents own him, so I’m happy for them.”
Dual N Tomcat arrived in the Intermediate Open Finals already having won a big paycheck in Reno. He
claimed the $19,600 Select 2-Year-Old Sale Incentive Open prize for being the highest-scoring Futurity Sale horse in the preliminaries—but his achievements didn’t stop there. Dawson and Dual N Tomcat also qualified for the Futurity Open Finals, where they scored a 642.5 (216 herd/216 rein/210.5 cow) for 15th place and another $10,000. Dual N Tomcat’s combined Sale Incentive money and show earnings totaled a whopping $62,908.
“It’s been a great show,” Dawson said. “It’s always a privilege to be in the finals. I’m a relative newcomer. It’s only my second time to make the Open Finals, so I’m out here with all my heroes. It’s awesome. It feels great. I’m in very good company and very humbled to be here. I almost feel like I don’t belong, in a sense,” Dawson said.
The CINCH Intermediate Open Reserve Champion was Maytown Moonshine
(Cats Moonshine x Bunny Lena x Smart Little Lena), shown by Powell Butte, Oregon, professional Shane Steffen for owner Carrie Whisler. They scored a 655 (218 herd/218.5 rein/218.5 cow) for a $15,000 payday.

Clay Volmer, Cisco, Texas, claimed his biggest NRCHA title to date when he won the Snaffle Bit Futurity Limited Open Championship riding Hesa Royalena (Bet Hesa Cat x Black Tie Queen x Smart Little Ricochet), owned by Kirk Johnston.
Volmer guided Hesa Royalena to a 636.5 composite (214.5 herd/213.5 rein/208.5 cow), earning $10,914.
Volmer got his start in the NRCHA when Jecca Ostrander, his wife, Carrie’s, aunt, sent him a horse to train last year.
“She said, ‘I want this horse to be a cow horse,’ and I mainly train cutters, but I said, ‘OK.’ I went and hung out with
dual N tomcat, shown by Sarah dawson for her father and owner Richard Winters, scored big in Reno, winning the CiNCH intermediate open Championship, earning a spot in the open finals, and taking home the open 2-year-old Sale incentive check.
[NRCHA Million Dollar Rider] Boyd Rice and hung out with [champion NRCHA Professional] Chris Dawson a bunch and got a lot of help from those guys, and from [NRCHA $2 Million Rider] Todd Crawford, and I really appreciate all the time they spent. I have some good owners, too,” he said.
Quality advice from those leading professionals helped Volmer make the Limited Open finals on Ostrander’s horse, Boxo Valentines Cat (Palo Duro Cat x Tracis Blue Roan x Roan Ambrose), during his first trip to the Snaffle Bit Futurity in 2015. That experience last year helped him prepare Hesa Royalena for the rigors of the finals a year later.
“I really didn’t do much to him. He’s pretty laid-back. After last year, I learned you have to make sure you have plenty of horse for these one-day deals, so yesterday, I just kind of cruised him around and went and worked him on the flag a
little bit this morning, and then we went and horse showed,” Volmer said.
The Limited Open Reserve Champion was Night Time Cat (Nitrocat x Quixote Jesse x Holidoc), shown by Grant Lindaman II and owned by Phil Hagadorn. They scored a 635 composite (206 herd/216.5 rein/212.5 cow), earning $8,751.

The scores in the preliminary gorounds determined the Level 1 Limited Open Champion, and it was Dustin Mills, a 24-year-old assistant trainer to Todd Crawford, who rode away with the Championship.
Mills guided Unos Smokin Chic (Uno What Time It Is x Dew It Flo x Mr Peponita Flo) to a 639 composite (215.5 herd/212.5 rein/211 fence), earning $6,484 for the gelding’s owner, Julie Gibbons.

of jumping and looking at the signs and things here. In the herd work, he was about as awesome as I could ask him to be. In the fence work, same deal. He was really good there too,” Mills said. “He’s always wide awake but really easy. He’s been kind of a dream to train, and awesome to show.”
The Limited Open Championship was Mills’ biggest NRCHA win. The 24-yearold son of cutting horse trainer Mark Mills, Brookshire, Texas, started working for Crawford almost a year and a half ago.
“It means a lot, especially in the short time I’ve been doing this,” he said.
He thanked Todd and Pam Crawford, Volmer, Chris Dawson, and Matt Koch for their various roles in his success, from mentoring to herd help.
“I’m fortunate to work for him,” Mills said, describing his relationship with Crawford. “When you’re around somebody who is so talented, it makes you better without you even knowing it.”

When Snaffle Bit Futurity Open and Intermediate Open Finalists Sarah Dawson and Wright On Hickory (Hes Wright On x Hickorys Miracle x Doc’s Hickory) entered the arena for those finals, they were already champions, winning the Ladies division title and a $1,134 paycheck with their preliminary score of 656 (216 herd/223.5 rein/216.5 fence).
Wright On Hickory is owned by a unique 10-member syndicate from other segments of the equine industry who are new to the NRCHA.
“I’m extremely happy for those people, because they’re all first time cow horse owners, so it’s pretty special for them to come here and do well,” Dawson said.
She took home a check for $1,134, along with a pile of nice prizes: a CR Morrison Trophy sponsored by Stacy Lynch, a $500 CR RanchWear gift certificate, a Gist buckle and Cinch jacket from the NRCHA, a JW Brooks Custom Hat, a cooler from Classic Equine, and product from Platinum Performance.
the ladies Champion was Sarah dawson, who rode Wright on Hickory to a 656 composite score in the preliminaries to win the title.

in one of her first times to show a Snaffle Bit futurity horse, California cowgirl Kathy ferguson swept three Non pro divisions in Reno.
Kathy Ferguson of Cottonwood, California, pulled off a clean sweep of all three National Reined Cow Horse Association Snaffle Bit Futurity Discount Tire Non Pro, Intermediate Non Pro and Novice Non Pro Championships. A veteran competitor who arrived in Reno with just over $17,000 in prior NRCHA lifetime earnings, Ferguson had plenty of experience showing bridle horses and derby horses, but virtually no prior futurity experience.
She piloted Royal Isabella (One Time Royalty x Oaks Rowdycat x High Brow Cat), to a 644.5 composite score (217 herd/215.5 rein/212 cow), winning the three championships by a three-point margin. Her triple paychecks totaled $28,951.
Ferguson described the experience as “surreal,” as she celebrated with friends and family amidst her three trophy sad-

dles, Gist buckles and other prizes that were heaped upon her in triplicate.
Typically, her husband, Dave, is the one to show the futurity horses, and then Kathy takes the reins during their derby years.
“I wanted a derby horse, and the only way I could get one was to futurity it,
so now I have my derby horse. I knew she could do it. I’m amazed I was with her on the trip. I didn’t think I could do it. I knew she could, but I didn’t think I could,” she said.

it was one of the only times in Kathy ferguson’s career to show a futurity horse, and she made it count, sweeping the Championships in the Discount tire Non pro, intermediate Non pro and Novice Non pro divisions.
Professional Erin Taormino, Waurika, Oklahoma.
In the Non Pro Futurity preliminaries, Ferguson and Royal Isabella finished fourth with a 640 composite (213 herd/215 rein/212 cow), a score they improved upon in the finals. Ferguson piloted her mare to the high score in the finals herd work, a 217, was third in the rein work with a 215.5, and then overcame her trepidation about the fence work to seal the win with a 212.
“I really wish herd work was the last event. I really wish it wouldn’t come down to the fence work, because I don’t like the fence work, because I’m not very brave in the fence work. The herd work is [Royal Isabella’s] and my favorite, and she’s actually fun to show in the reining. I hate it when they say it comes down to the fence work, because I panic,” Ferguson said.
She thanked her husband, her mare, and Taormino for contributing to her success.

The Snaffle Bit Futurity Amateur Champion was determined by the scores in the preliminary go-rounds, and it was Jenny Newman, a cattle rancher from the south-central Oregon town of Bly, who took home the Championship, riding One Kool Moon (Cats Full Moon x One Stylish Babe x One Time Pepto) to a composite score of 642 (215 herd/213 rein/214 cow), earning $5,400.
Newman also earned a place in the Non Pro, Intermediate Non Pro and Novice Non Pro Finals where she finished as the reserve champion in all three divisions, scoring a 641.5 (213 herd/214 rein/214.5 cow), earning a trio of additional paychecks totaling $22,198.
Newman, who arrived in Reno with $2,550 in prior NRCHA earnings, began
her journey with One Kool Moon at the urging of her late sister-in-law, Jennifer Rice, who passed away in 2015 following a battle with brain cancer.
“She encouraged me to find a good horse,” Newman said, through tears. Although her sister-in-law wasn’t a horsewoman, “she was my biggest supporter.”
Newman consulted NRCHA Professional Clayton Edsall, Oakdale, California, who helped her find and purchase One Kool Moon.
The Futurity Amateur Reserve Champion was Sonya DiStefano, Calgary, Alberta, Canada, riding High Brow Kitty Cat (Palo Duro Cat x Hickorys Jac O Lena x Jac Pic A Nic). She scored a 637.5 composite (208 herd/212 rein/217.5 cow), earning $4,320. DiStefano also advanced to the clean-slate finals in the Non Pro, Intermediate Non Pro and Novice Non
Pro Futurity, where she collected three more paychecks totaling $11,631.

Scottsdale, Arizona, competitor Mindy Barkemeyer and her Futurity horse, Cattyholic (Catty Hawk x Boomerita x Boomernic) scored a 627.5 (213 herd/201 rein/213.5 cow) to earn a $2,850 paycheck as the Futurity Non Pro Limited Champions.
“He is an amazing cow horse. His weakness is in the reining. I knew I had to be aggressive and be a showman. So I just put him in the right spots and hoped that it all worked out, and it did,” she said.
Cattyholic comes from a breeding program and a family of horses that Barkemeyer knows well.
“Bill and Michelle Cowan bred him, and they also bred my bridle horse [Dulce Smart Boomer, nicknamed “Clark,” also

Their little girl, Mackenzie, named all their 2-year-olds and his name was Gummybear. She said, ‘Mindy, I think this horse is most like Clark,’ which is my bridle horse. I said, ‘Oh, I’ve got to have him!’”
She thanked her husband, Brad; her herd help, Doug Williamson, Shadd Parkinson and Corey Cushing; NRCHA Hall of Fame horseman Don Murphy; her mom, who stayed home to take care of the Barkemeyers’ young sons, Bryce and Zane; and her huge cheering section of friends in Reno.
The Non Pro Limited Reserve Champion was Rainy Walker, Eunice, New Mexico, who rode Tex Me A Cat (Zezes Pepto cat x Texas Switch x Texas Kicker) to a 617.5, earning $2,375.

the $100,000-added World Championship Rope Horse futurity makes its debut at the NRCHA Snaffle Bit futurity.

adding to the excitement in Fort Worth, Texas, during the National Reined Cow Horse Association Snaffle Bit Futurity is the inaugural World Championship Rope Horse Futurity. Produced by Jay and Lindsay Wadhams, the high-stakes event will be held Friday, October 13, at 8 a.m. in the outdoor covered arena adjacent to the John Justin Arena. Open to 4-, 5-, and 6-year-old horses, the format consists of three full rounds of competition, plus a finals for top qualifiers. Horses advancing to the finals will keep their composite score from the preliminary rounds, and champions in each class
will be crowned based upon the highest combined score from three rounds and the finals.
Divisions for the World Championship Rope Horse Futurity are Open Heading and Open Heeling, with incentives offered to the highest placing 4-yearold horse, highest placing No. 6 and lower header, and highest placing No. 7 and lower heeler. Scores are based on two judges’ scores, plus points from the time accrued on the run. Time points are calculated by taking a base score of 60 points and subtracting the time on the run. A 10-point penalty will be assessed for a broken barrier and a 5-point penalty for roping a leg. Riders are allowed to compete on unlimited horses per side and will pony up a $1,250 entry fee per side.

Dean Tuftin of DT Horses was very instrumental in approaching the NRCHA about incorporating the World Championship Rope Horse Futurity into the Snaffle Bit Futurity schedule, and we think people will enjoy it a lot.”
“It’s very exciting for us, with it being the first year for the Snaffle Bit Futurity to be in Fort Worth, it gives a lot of ropers who enjoy watching the cow horses a chance to watch or participate in the roping, and hopefully look at

Katie Starlight, a mare who made dreams come true, was the total package from the beginning. Sired by NRCHA Million Dollar Sire Grays Starlight and out of the Colonel Freckles daughter, Colonel Gunsmoke, the sorrel filly possessed a royal pedigree and knockout good looks. In her show career, she won more than $126,000 and two World’s Greatest Horseman Championships, but
By Stephanie Duquette
that wasn’t enough for the over-achieving Katie Starlight. She also claimed royal broodmare status when her very first foal won the NRCHA Snaffle Bit Futurity Open Championship. She continued to produce superior foals for the rest of her life, leaving an indelible impact on the reined cow horse industry and securing a permanent place in the NRCHA Hall of Fame.
Katie Starlight was foaled April 27, 1993, in Clements, California. Bred by
Nicholas D. Arismendi, she changed hands at birth to Art and Sandy Haskins, who consigned the fancy sorrel filly to the 1994 Snaffle Bit Futurity Sale. Even as a yearling, Katie Starlight turned heads. Her stunning conformation and glowing copper coat caught the eye of NRCHA Hall of Fame professional Sandy Collier, as she browsed the sale with friend and fellow trainer Korie Baker.
“Korie Baker and I saw Katie Starlight in a stall at the sale, and oh my goodness,
Katie Starlight
she was so amazing. We wanted to have her,” Collier said.
Collier’s wish came true when her clients, Paula Hunsicker and her then-husband David Hunsicker, of Los Olivos, California, bought “Katie” at the sale. The filly’s career was quickly mapped out. Collier would train her and Paula would eventually show her. When she came of riding age, Katie Starlight exceeded expectations and became a standout in Collier’s barn.
“She was always beautiful and special and amazing,” Collier said.
At the 1996 NRCHA Snaffle Bit Futurity, Collier piloted Katie Starlight to the Open finals. The sensitive mare was a favorite to win, but a bobble while circling the cow in the finals fence work meant a top 10 finish instead of the Championship.
“She was easy to train in the reining and the herd work. Down the fence, she was so cowy, she never wanted to get near a cow. She was very smart about cattle, but had that cutting horse thing about not wanting to get real close to them, so the fence work was a challenge for her, especially circling,” Collier recalled.
When Katie Starlight was 5, Collier’s fellow NRCHA Hall of Fame horseman, Ted Robinson, took the mare’s reins, continuing her show career for Paula Hunsicker.
“Ted did a fabulous job getting to the rest of her ability, and made her as special as she really could be,” Collier said.
Robinson was quick to credit Collier as Katie’s primary trainer.
“I got along with her good. Sandy had her trained really well. I wouldn’t say that I changed anything. I just went off of what Sandy had already done,” the Oak View, California, professional said. In 1998 and early 1999, Katie Starlight
continued earning paychecks as a 5-yearold hackamore horse and 6-year-old bridle horse, shown by Robinson in the Open and Hunsicker in the Non Pro. In the late spring of 1999, she became Robinson’s last minute substitute for the inaugural World’s Greatest Horseman, held in mid-June at the Lazy E Arena in Guthrie, Oklahoma.
“I was going to show another horse in the World’s Greatest, and he got sore.
Tom Shelly [a California trainer and fellow 1999 World’s Greatest Horseman competitor] said, ‘Why don’t you take Katie?’ He talked me into it. She had never been roped on, and I was only a month or so out,” Robinson said.
Katie Starlight’s learning curve for the steer-stopping came with some challenges.
“I picked up a rope the first time, and I had a runaway. She stampeded like you wouldn’t believe,” the NRCHA Million Dollar Rider said, chuckling at the memory.
Fortunately, Katie Starlight’s natural cow sense took her mind off the rope.
“As long as the steer was out in front of her, she didn’t care,” Robinson said.
Katie Starlight’s World’s Greatest Horseman debut began in rocky fashion. Her trip to the herd left her near the bottom of the pack, but she came back with the high score in the rein work.
“I think I was 15th after the herd work, but when the reining was over, I was second,” Robinson said. “She was good all the way around in the roping and the fence work, and she was good in the finals.”
The pair took home $50,000 for the win, the mare’s biggest single paycheck to date. She won an identical check two years later, when she and Robinson claimed their second World’s Greatest Horseman title. It was, perhaps, a foreshadowing of Katie Starlight’s broodmare dynasty, as she was pregnant with her first foal during those winning 2001 World’s Greatest Horseman runs at the Lazy E. That baby, a colt named Nu Circle Of Light, hit the ground in March, 2002. Sired by Robinson’s stallion, Nu Circle N Cash (Nu Cash x Miss Circle Doc x Doc’s Hickory), and owned by Hunsicker, Nu Circle Of Light won the 2005 NRCHA Snaffle Bit Futurity Championship with Robinson aboard—a tremendous accolade for brand-new broodmare Katie Starlight and all her human connections. Just months before the Snaffle Bit Futurity, after a year’s worth of negotiation which eventually developed into friendships between buyer and seller, Katie Starlight had changed ownership from Hunsicker to Cinder Lakes Ranch, owned and operated by Rick Ford and his mother, Kathy Woeck. At the time, Cinder Lakes Ranch was expanding from its original Powell Butte, Oregon, location with a second facility in Valley View, Texas. Ford was always on the lookout for worthy additions to the elite Cinder Lakes broodmare band.
leading nrCHa dam Katie Starlight, with more than $126,000 and two World’s Greatest Horseman Championships with ted robinson on her own show resume, joins the nrCHa Hall of fame in 2017.
“We already had quite a few mares. John Slack [the late reining horse and cow horse trainer] knew about Katie through Teddy and led us in that direction,” Ford recalled. “We got pretty lucky. We bought Katie, and shortly after, Teddy went out and won the Snaffle Bit Futurity on that first colt, and I don’t think I’ve ever jumped so high off the ground in my life. People were like, ‘Who’s THAT guy?’ It was an exciting start to everything, and we got to know Paula throughout the process.”
Katie Starlight continued to produce successful foals for Cinder Lakes Ranch, and her offspring have earned $348,898 in NRCHA competition, putting her at No. 6 on the all-time NRCHA dam list. Her top-earning foal, This One Time, a 2009 stallion by NRCHA Million Dollar Sire One Time Pepto, has earnings right at $150,000 and is still showing. Of her 14 foals, eight have won NRCHA money, and 10 of her babies have won money across all disciplines (cutting, reining, cow horse, and stock horse).
“Katie had a long show career, and her
babies, she bred into them what she had in her. We bred her to just about everything, and it all seemed to work. It says a lot about her,” Ford observed.
In 2014, when Katie was 21, the veterinary team at Performance Equine Associates in Thackerville, Oklahoma, performed an innovative surgery, called a partial carpal arthrodesis, to restore mobility in her right knee. According to Ford, the procedure helped the grand old mare remain more comfortable in her final two years of life, until the difficult decision was made to humanely euthanize her.
“She didn’t owe us anything,” Ford said, adding that Katie Starlight’s legacy lives and breathes all around him, as he is now bringing the mare’s grand-get into the Cinder Lakes Ranch sale fitting program.
Looking back on Katie Starlight’s career, with the mare and her two primary trainers now all part of the NRCHA Hall of Fame, is awe-inspiring for Collier.
“How amazing is that? When you’re in the trenches, you don’t think about the
future and what it could bring. You’re just trying to do the best job you can in the moment. It’s very, very special.”

With his petite frame, luxurious hair, refined head, big dark eyes and friendly nature, Topsails Rien Maker resembled a child’s dream pony more than a fierce reined cow horse. But the talent and tenacity within the stallion’s compact sorrel body propelled him to undisputed status as one of the NRCHA’s most unique, highest-achieving and universally beloved equine athletes.
Foaled in 1999, bred by the Stellato Revocable Trust of Redding, California, Topsails Rien Maker was sired by National Reining Horse Association (NRHA) Million-Dollar Sire Topsail Cody. His dam, Jameen Gay, was a daughter of Toby Gay Bar. She had a modest show record herself, and of her six foals, Topsails Rien Maker was the only money-earner.
The stallion, known to his legions of fans by his nickname, “Slider,” lacked the typical pedigree and the physical stature of a big-time cow horse prospect, but NRCHA Professional Russell Dilday recognized the lethal weapon he would become. He started riding Topsails Rien Maker as a 2-year-old for then-owner Dana Roulet, who had grown weary of his antics.
“She put 30 days on him and brought him to me, because he was goofing around with her a little bit,” Dilday said. “I knew he was pretty great within 30 to 60 days. I loved his personality right off. He was full of himself.”
Topsails Rien Maker was also full of natural talent. In 2002, the stallion’s 3-year-old year, Dilday was in the early stages of his own cow horse training career. The pair went to the NRCHA Snaffle Bit Futurity and finished as the Limited Open Reserve Champions.
the partnership between topsails Rien maker and co-owner/trainer Russell Dilday was evident in many ways, including this bridleless pasture roping session captured by photographer Darrell Dodds.
“He trained me to stop. I didn’t even know what big stops felt like, until I got that horse. And he was always great on the cow. It was so natural for him,” Dilday said. “It opened up a whole new world. All I had to do was think what I wanted to do, and he did it.”
In 2003, Roulet decided to put Topsails Rien Maker up for sale. Dilday, determined to keep him, began dealing. He involved NRCHA Million Dollar Rider John Ward, who became Slider’s partowner, and acquired part-ownership himself. Soon after, Dilday convinced longtime family friend Kevin Cantrelle to buy out Ward’s share. The Dilday/Cantrelle partnership remained on Slider’s papers for the rest of the stallion’s life.
“It took him about three months to get me talked into it, and away we went from there,” Cantrelle said.
The dynamic duo of Dilday and Slider
continued to post substantial earnings every year until their last NRCHA show appearance in 2013. His lifetime $335,612 in reined cow horse earnings made Topsails Rien Maker the NRCHA’s top money-earning horse for an impressive five-year span, from mid-2010 until mid2015. The stallion has sired 192 AQHAregistered foals, and of those, 42 are money-earners, with more than $108,000 in reined cow horse and $110,000 across all disciplines.
Although he won titles in every phase of reined cow horse competition and was named a Supreme Reined Cow Horse in 2007, Topsails Rien Maker made his biggest impression in all-around bridle horse contests. His keen herd work, smooth reining maneuvers, effortless roping runs and dynamic trips down the fence garnered an unprecedented three NRCHA World’s Greatest Horseman
titles, with Dilday aboard, in 2008, 2009 and 2011.
“You could see the connection between Russell and Slider,” Cantrelle said. “That horse would die trying to get something done for Russell. You just don’t see that very often.”
The special bond was evident to seasoned professionals and spectators alike. When Topsails Rien Maker burst through the gate for the fence work at a show, palpable electricity filled the arena.
“It was kind of magical, the whole environment, and the way people cared about that horse. When it was time to go down the fence, they all paid attention,” Cantrelle said.
The best seat in the house for those fence runs belonged to Dilday. He and Slider became famous for making just a move or two in the boxing before heading full speed down the wall.
“I don’t know how many times I would box on the end and go, and when I came around that corner, I would think ‘Oh, heck. I have maybe left the corner with too much cow this time.’ And somehow, Slider always caught it,” Dilday said. “And circling, there’s just nothing like him taking your leg and sticking it in that cow’s armpit and holding it there until it’s time to switch sides, and do it on the other side.”
The stallion’s appeal reached an even wider audience when he became a Breyer model horse in 2012, a distinction achieved due to the persistence of Dana Jones, a non pro cow horse competitor who has known the Dildays and ridden with Russell since 2004.
“Slider had that huge mane and huge forelock. Tanna Dilday, Russell’s wife, said one day that he should be a little girl’s Breyer horse. I have a background in sales and marketing, and I said, ‘If you want me to, I’ll run with it.’ I’m dogged and tenacious, and that’s what I did. It took about two-and-a-half years of me just hounding them,” Jones said.
As part of Topsails Rien Maker’s Breyer model status, he and Dilday hit the road as reined cow horse ambassadors. Their public appearances included a trip to the 2013 BreyerFest in Lexington, Kentucky.
“The Breyer horse thing was obviously big,” Cantrelle said. “Slider’s charisma drew people to him, and Russell was willing to go to those different places. I think he did a lot for the industry and drew a lot of people in.”
Only once did Slider bring heartbreak instead of joy to his human family and friends. That was in May 2016, when kidney disease cut his life short at age 17.
“I loved him, but after he died and I really thought about how much he had done, is when it dawned on me how special he was as an athlete, versus how special he was just to me. When you look back and see what he did out in that
world, especially starting with some limited open cowboy kid, he accomplished a huge amount,” Dilday said.
National Reined Cow Horse Association Hall of Fame status for Topsails Rien Maker validates what the people closest to him have known all along.
“It means a lot, because it’s the recognition Slider deserves, for what he did for the industry. That’s what means the most to me. He sired some offspring that did win, but he wasn’t a huge sire, so to me, this is the recognition of a true show horse,” Cantrelle said.
Dilday added: “He overcame every odd. He went into a business he wasn’t supposed to be bred for, with a trainer that hadn’t won anything, without the body frame that knocks everyone’s eyes out. He just came in there with a heart. That’s what he came with.”

lARRy Bell
Longtime National Reined Cow Horse Association sponsor, past Vice President and board member Larry Bell, of Midland, Texas, joins the NRCHA Hall of Merit in 2017. The Bell family had been breeding prospects for the cutting and reining horse arenas for many years before Larry made his first trip to the NRCHA Snaffle
Bit Futurity in 1998. He became excited about the dynamic new sport, decided to place some young prospects in reined cow horse training, and became an active promoter of reined cow horse in Texas and the surrounding area.
Larry’s involvement began as a volunteer and sponsor of the Southwest Reined Cow Horse Association (SRCHA), a Texas-based NRCHA affiliate. He joined the SRCHA board in 2000, and became its president in 2002. During that time, the SRCHA was experiencing significant growth and attention, as several top California cow horse trainers relocated to Texas and Oklahoma. Bell’s enthusiasm for promoting reined cow horse, and his logistical and leadership skills, drew attention at the national level. He was recruited to the NRCHA Board of Directors in 2003 and served multiple terms as the NRCHA Vice President and as an Executive Committee member.
Bell’s original, and enduring, priority has been to promote the growth and enthusiasm for the reined cow horse in Texas and throughout the Southwest, right alongside the robust cutting horse industry.
“One thing I always believed is, if we could ever figure out a way to showcase the cow horse in the heart of cutting

horse country, we could bring a lot of new interest and involvement to our event,” he said.
An early priority for Bell was a lead role in producing the first National Reined Cow Horse Association World Show in Stephenville, Texas, in 2004. He was the SRCHA President at that time, and received enthusiastic support from SRCHA volunteers and his good friend, NRCHA Hall of Fame horseman Dan Roeser, who was on the NRCHA board at that time. Additional support from his entire family, including his wife, Ellen; his daughter, Amy, then a student at Tarleton State University in Stephenville; and his son, Matthew, helped guarantee the show’s success. It was during the days of the NRCHA World Show in Stephenville that the Bell’s daughter Amy became passionate about reined cow horses, and her NRCHA show career
took the Bell’s enthusiasm for the reined cow horse events to a whole new level.
Over the next few years, Bell became an integral part of refining the World Show, including the development of the NRCHA Regional and World Championship qualifying system. The popular NRCHA World’s Greatest Horseman eventually became part of the World Show, now called the Celebration of Champions, as it moved to San Angelo, Texas. When the Celebration of Champions and World’s Greatest Horseman relocated to the Will Rogers Memorial Center in Fort Worth, Texas, in 2014, Bell and his family renewed their commitment to the NRCHA by becoming the World’s Greatest Horseman title sponsor, under the Bell family’s ranch name, Kalpowar Quarter Horses.
Moving the World’s Greatest Horseman to Fort Worth, “was the culmination of a
great plan that had taken years to evolve. It provided us with the opportunity to share this great event and this great sport with all of our friends in the horse community in this part of the world,” Bell said.
He constantly emphasizes the role of reined cow horse owners and sponsors for their integral part in providing the horses and riders with opportunities to compete. The strong personal relationships he has developed because of the reined cow horse industry are also particularly important to Bell.
“Those relationships become more like family. That is one of the reasons this sport has such a significant place in my family’s heart. It’s important to us, but it was especially important to our daughter, Amy. That’s why we made the decision to continue the tradition that began because of Amy,” he said.

NRCHA Subscribed Stallion program adds value throughout the industry.
In the mid 1980s, the National Reined Cow Horse Association Board of Directors went in search of a promotional program for reined cow horse stallions that consistently sired NRCHA performing offspring. Other performance associations had incentive programs, and the NRCHA wanted to develop a unique identity for reined cow horse stallions and their foals.
That idea developed into the successful NRCHA Subscribed Stallion program, a far-reaching incentive that offers rewards from the show pen to the sale ring.
It’s a simple concept. Stallion owners subscribe their sire, in order for the offspring of a specific foaling year to be
eligible to show in the NRCHA Stakes. This enrollment fee can be paid at any time, up through the foal crop’s 5-yearold year — although the subscription fee does increase annually as the foal crop ages.
For each year that a stallion is enrolled, his foal crop from that year is eligible to show as a 4- and 5-yearold in the NRCHA Stakes, one of the premier limited-age events for reined cow horses. Annually, the Stakes boasts a payout of nearly $300,000, and only the offspring of enrolled stallions are eligible to compete.
To show appreciation to the generous stallion owners, the NRCHA also presents a monetary award to the nomina-
tor of the sire of each Stakes division champion.
The Subscribed Stallion program is far-reaching, as offspring of those stallions are also given priority at the prestigious NRCHA Sales at the Snaffle Bit Futurity each year. It’s a program that adds value to the entire industry and creates a support system for the reined cow horse breeder by strengthening the market for the offspring of enrolled stallions. The NRCHA helps promote Subscribed Stallions and their offspring on its web site, in the pages of the Reined Cow Horse News, and in the NRCHA Futurity Sales literature.
As an example of the rewards awaiting offspring of Subscribed Stallions, the 2016 NRCHA Stakes Open Champion, SJR Diamond Rey (Dual Rey x Shiners Diamond Girl x Shining Spark), shown by Corey Cushing, won $36,452 for owner San Juan Ranch. The 2016 Stakes Non Pro Champion, Shannon McCarty, pocketed a $6,979 check when she rode her gelding Chicaroos Cat (Hick Chicaroo x Kat Five x High Brow Cat) to the win.
The complete Subscribed Stallion program terms and conditions, and an enrollment form, are available in the Snaffle Bit Futurity Program and at www.NRCHA.com. Don’t miss out on your chance to add value to your stallion and his offspring!

of futurity non Pro DiviSionS, bringing total aDDeD money to $100,000
once again, Discount Tire is supporting the National Reined Cow Horse Association Snaffle Bit Futurity Non Pro divisions with a sponsorship, which brings the total added money for the Non Pro, Intermediate Non Pro, Novice Non Pro and Amateur to an impressive $100,000.
The NRCHA welcomed the Scottsdale, Arizona-based company, the world’s largest tire and wheel retailer, to its corporate partner family in 2014.
“We are delighted to continue our relationship with Discount Tire, and we thank the company and its representatives, Wilson and Susan Lyle, for allowing us to maintain our Non Pro added money at a six-figure level here at the Snaffle Bit Futurity,” said NRCHA
the 2016 futurity Amateur Reserve Champion was Sonya DiStefano, Calgary, Alberta, Canada, riding High Brow Kitty Cat (Palo Duro Cat x Hickorys Jac o lena x Jac Pic A Nic), earning $4,320. DiStefano also advanced to the cleanslate finals in the Non Pro, intermediate Non Pro and Novice Non Pro futurity, where she collected three more paychecks totaling $11,631.
Executive Director Jay Winborn. “Maintaining attractive payouts is crucial to encouraging participation in our Premier Events, and thanks to Discount Tire and the Lyles, we are continuing to grow our association and the Non Pro divisions here at the Snaffle Bit Futurity.”
With more than 900 stores in 28 states, Discount Tire, which does business under the name America’s Tire in parts of California, was founded by Bruce T. Halle in a rented building in Ann Arbor, Michigan. Day by day, the one-man operation grew into what is now one of the most recognized names in the industry.
Everyone involved with the Discount/ America’s Tire organization adheres to a common thread: Treat customers and
fellow employees with respect and fairness. Care for those in need, always do what is right, work hard, be responsible and have fun.
National Reined Cow Horse Association competitors log thousands of miles on the road every show season, and they know what it means to have reliable tires, outstanding customer service and competitive pricing. Through their web sites, www.DiscountTire. com and www.AmericasTire.com, the company enables customers to locate stores, select tires and wheels, schedule appointments, sign up for discounts, and access safety tips and other useful information. The Discount Tire Interactive Wheel System allows customers to visualize wheels on their vehicle prior to purchase.
Besides its stellar reputation among its customer base and its active role with the NRCHA, Discount Tire also holds a place in the Guinness Book of World Records. The company’s iconic “Thank You” television commercial, which first aired in 1975, earned a place in the Guinness Book in 2005 as the longest-running TV commercial of all time. The original ten-second spot depicts an elderly woman hurling a tire through a Discount Tire store window as the voice-over says, “If ever you’re not satisfied with one of our tires, please feel free to bring it back. Thank you.”

National High School finals Rodeo showcases high caliber reined cow horse competition.
anew indoor arena shielded riders from summer storms and provided ideal footing for reined cow horses to spin, slide and run down the fence at the 2017 National High School Finals Rodeo, held July 17 - 21 at the Gillette, Wyoming, Cam-Plex Event Center. A total of 108 qualifiers from National High School Rodeo Association regions in the United States, Canada and Australia, competed for the prestigious championship title.
“We have a covered pen here in Gillette, and that made a big difference. I think the cattle were really good this year, but the biggest change was the amount of improvement that the contestants made,” said Ronnie Haslerig, NHSRA National Director for Georgia. “The good kids were always good, but the kids who aren’t exposed to the reined cow horse as much, they were much better this year. You see a lot better showmanship, they know how to handle the cattle better, and the whole thing is just improving.”
The number of reined cow horse contestants at the state level has steadily

increased since reined cow horse became part of the NHSRA event lineup three years ago, thanks to sponsor backing from Carol Rose.
“This year, Idaho had 40 or 50 participants, and Texas had over 30. Utah was a big, big state for us. For all the 108
contestants who are here at the Finals, there are hundreds more kids out there, actively competing in the cow horse at the state level,” said NRCHA Executive Director Jay Winborn. “From the association’s standpoint, to look out there and see what’s happening is tremendously
daxon Buttars, a Snowville, utah, high school senior competing for the state of idaho, won the 2017 National High School finals Rodeo Reined Cow Horse Championship in gillette, Wyoming. it was the third year for Reined Cow Horse to be part of the National High School Rodeo event lineup.
satisfying. It’s nice to see that we have a large crop of potential cow horse participants for the future.”
The 2017 NHSFR reined cow horse experience began with a free clinic for the contestants, with top-notch instruction from NRCHA Million Dollar Rider Jake Telford and NRCHA Professional Jason Gay, both of Caldwell, Idaho. Next, the cow horse riders competed in multiple performances during the week, to determine the top 20 who would advance to the short go and take aim at the National Championship. The short go finalists represented a wide spectrum of reined cow horse experience, from seasoned NRCHA Youth competitors to riders with

in his final year of national high School rodeo eligibility, Daxon Buttars galloped away with the 2017 reined Cow horse Championship when he earned the high score in the average, an 882. Claiming the title he had chased for three years made the recent high school graduate feel “overwhelmed.”
“the last two years, i’ve come here and got my butt whipped, and it sunk in. i’ve put in a lot of work this year,” Buttars said.
as the son of national reined Cow horse association Professional Brandon Buttars, Daxon spends long days working on his family’s horse training facility and cattle ranch in Snowville, utah. although he is a utah resident, Buttars qualified for the nhSfr as part of team idaho. he knew his win was hard-earned, against fellow contestants who put in just as much effort.
“there was some tough, tough competition this year,” he said, giving particular credit to idaho contestants Zayle Davis, who finished 4th in the short go; and Cassidee Wood, who finished 2nd. “Zayle and Cassidee, they about got me at State, and i thought they had me here [at the nShfr]. i just tried to stay consistent and

Jakob Dees, of Elgin, Oklahoma, qualified for the short go aboard his family’s 11-year-old rodeo pickup horse, a big dun with the blood of legendary reining horse sire Hollywood Dun It in his pedigree. Dees trained the gelding to do the reining maneuvers and work a cow down the fence.
“Last year was my first year to show him. My dad picks up broncs on him. We have a rodeo company in Oklahoma,” Dees said.
The high school senior has received coaching and help from NRCHA Professionals Mark Luis, Robbie Boyce,
not over-think anything. Just stay cool, calm and relaxed.”
the idaho riders dominated the first several performances, and Buttars knew there was no room for error heading into the short go, where the previous scores from the performances counted toward the average. Davis and Wood came into the short go with higher scores than Buttars, who was one of the last to work.
“Both of those girls had me by a lot of points coming into the short go and i knew they had to have a bobble for me to catch them,” he said. “at first, i thought i wanted to be early and set the pace and put a little pressure on them, but now, looking back, i knew what i had to be when i rode in the pen.”
Buttars was well mounted on nickin along (nic it in the Bud x Shining Smartly x Shining Spark), a 2009 gelding owned by lori adamski-Peek. he knew his horse was talented, though not always the easiest to ride.
“he’s a super, super nice horse. i love him. he’s a little tough in the show pen. he knows when he’s in there,” Buttars said. “he’s a little tough to get shown in the reining, but he’s a fence horse. the cows in the short round were tough and

First-time NHSFR reined cow horse qualifier Jake Baca, of Vega, Texas, also a successful National Cutting Horse Association competitor, celebrated his 16th birthday during rodeo week in Gillette. His NHSFR debut included a berth in the short go and an eighth place finish overall.
“It’s been all I was expecting and more. I was hoping I would do good, but I knew there would be a lot of tough competitors, and I’m glad I got along as well as I did,” he said.
Buttars’ 882-point composite score secured him the 2017 nhSfr reined Cow horse Championship. pushy. my cow was pushy as heck. i’m so glad i got by him.”
Buttars’ father, Brandon, a veteran of many high-pressure nrCha finals runs, was in gillette with Daxon to help him prepare. after the short go, Buttars summed up the stress level of his rodeo dad role as “a lot worse than horse showing!”
Daxon, a 2017 graduate of Bear river high School in garland, utah, will attend otero Junior College in la Junta, Colorado, on a rodeo scholarship this fall.
after graduation, he plans to embark on a horse training career with an emphasis on roping. he thanked adamski-Peek, his dad, and his stepmother, Sophia Buttars, for supporting his high school rodeo career and his passion for horsemanship. Buttars received a $1,500 scholarship from the nrCha for the win.
“it’s a way of life. it’s the way i was born and the way i was raised, to train a horse every day,” he said.
Baca enjoys the fast pace and finesse of reined cow horse, and says training on his own has been the biggest obstacle.
“Some parts are a little more challenging and there are parts I thought might be a little harder that turned out to be easier than expected. But for the most part it’s been pretty challenging for me, because I’ve pretty much got to do everything myself.”
Another short go qualifier, Natalie Leisinger of Highmore, South Dakota, discovered her team roping heel horse had some quality reined cow horse training in his past. In just 30 days, with the help of her stepfather, champion professional roper and horse trainer Bobby Harris, Leisinger tuned up her gelding’s skills and rode him to an impressive third place in the nation.
“He was a little rusty at the beginning, but it’s really fun,” Leisinger said. “I came back in the short go last year. My goal was to beat last year’s outcome, so it was awesome, especially to be riding a horse that I really don’t know much about and have only been on for a month.”
Leisinger and the other short go qualifiers will receive an invitation to compete in the High School Reined Cow Horse class at the NRCHA Celebration of Champions in Fort Worth, Texas, in February 2018. It will be Leisinger’s second time to be invited, and she is looking forward to another trip to the Lone Star state.
“We went this year. It’s such a fun opportunity, and it’s so cool to be on that big stage. I think we will be going down there again next year,” she said.
The two NHSFR judges, Bozo Rogers, of Gainesville, Texas, and Cayley Wilson, of Abbotsford, British Columbia, were impressed with the overall caliber of competition at the NHSFR.
“I thought there’d be a handful of kids that have shown in the cow horse and they’d probably stand out. But there are a lot of them, whether they are ranch kids or whatever, who can read cows and set their cow up good. And some of them are quite surprising, in the reined work, how well they showed too. It’s awesome,” Wilson said.
All 20 of the NHSfR short go qualifiers received an invitation to compete in the High School Reined Cow Horse class at the NRCHA Celebration of Champions in fort Worth, texas, next february. traditional Rawhide Braiders donated romel reins to the top 20.
Zayle Davis, of Blackfoot, idaho, won a $2,500 scholarship from the reining Horse foundation for having the high rein work score in the short go. She also claimed another $1,000 scholarship from the national reined Cow Horse foundation for the overall high-scoring fence work in the go-rounds. nrCHa executive Director Jay Winborn made the presentations in Gillette.
Widespread support from some of the NRCHA’s leading professionals has contributed significantly to the appeal of reined cow horse among high school rodeo contestants. A number of wellknown NRCHA Professionals could be seen coaching and helping in the cattle pens during the week, including Million Dollar Rider Zane Davis and $2 Million Rider Todd Crawford.
“Helping these kids is a lot of fun,” said Crawford, who has been involved with the NHSRA/NRCHA partnership since its inception. “It is truly amazing that all of these kids know what to do. When we first started three years ago, we had to teach the kids how to loop a cow and stuff. Now, you hear people holler, “Loop!” but the kid’s already got it done. They know how to circle a cow. They know when to switch sides. And it’s not from just one area, it’s kids from all over the country, so you know they’re getting the right help.”
