Education in the U.S. vs India - from students’ perspective (This article is written in English for the benefit of kids who are yet to learn to read/ write in Tamil) I vividly remember my first trip to a grocery store in the U.S.,a few days after arriving here for my graduate program. I handed a $20 bill to the cashier and was supposed to get $ 4.86 back as change. I gave the cashier fourteen cents so that she could give me a five dollar bill. The casher looked at the change I handed her and stopped breathing for a moment! I was like, ‘wow’! Only a few days earlier, when I visited the laboratory, where I’d be working for my research, I said to myself ‘wow’, being overwhelmed by the facilities and the advancements in research here. What a dichotomy, I thought! Later on, I came to understand that mental math is not practiced as a part of math education here.

Education differs at different levels and in different parts of the world.

When NRI families move back to India- be the move temporary or permanent, the big dilemma they face, is their kids’ education. How are they going to cope, when their kids go to school in india. We thought that the best way to shed light on the pros and cons of the education in the U.S. vs India is to hear straight from the horse’s mouth! We interviewed three children:

Kavya and Karunya, daughters of Mr.Iyappan and Mrs.Viji Iyappan, who studied here till their elementary/middle schools respectively, studied in India for two years, then came back to continue their studies here; and Akil Giri, son of Mr. Giri and Mrs. Jehatha Giri, who studied till his fourth grade here and went to India and continues his middle and high school studies. Let’s hear their perspectives:

Karunya Iyappan: “I experienced vast differences in the education system when I moved to Chennai for middle school. My parents admitted my sister and me into an ICSE (Indian Certificate of Secondary Education) school in India, because it is a board of education that is followed in Dubai, Malaysia, and other foreign countries.

Unfortunately, it was too late before we realized that it was no different from a CBSE (Central Board of Secondary Education) school. A typical school day was one in which the teacher would make us copy notes, and then we would be let loose to do whatever we wanted to do. It was only a few weeks before exams when we would even open up those notes and memorize as many facts as we could. Of course, there were many teachers who strived to make us understand the concepts. But that was only if we confronted them with such questions- which we didn’t, because all we wanted was marks

As an American high schooler today, I can safely say that we are all blessed to obtain this type of education. The American education system is more diverse because it recognizes different types of learners and modifies curriculums based on that. There are many hands-on experiences which further enhance our understanding on certain subjects. But my favorite component of the American education system is that it goes beyond academics and requires us students to participate in social service. This exposes us to opportunities in which we can not only actively help others but also gain a bonding experience with other students while working for a good cause.

After experiencing both education systems, I’m pretty sure I’ve made myself clear that the American system is better.

However, looking back, I had the best 2 years of my life in India. My friends in India are the truest people I’ve ever met and I miss them a lot. But what I miss the most is Chennai city with all its imperfections like the incorrect English spellings on restaurant banners, the unclean road-side restaurants, the polluted air, huge movie billboards.

Everything I mentioned about the education systems is from my mind. But my soul will always be in Chennai.”

Although I enjoyed living in Chennai, I struggled a lot with my education there. I did 5th and 6th grade there. The teachers won’t explain anything, but recite what’s in the text books so I would end up just staring at my textbooks without understanding anything. The teachers there do not encourage us asking questions. Whereas, my teachers here in the U.S. encourage us to ask more questions and they are so happy to stay after school for us and help us out. There, the whole school would be stressed during the exam time. The teachers would try to cover the lesson but they were in such a hurry, that we wouldn’t understand anything. I would cry day and night not knowing how to study. My friends would have no problem memorizing, but memorizing was a big struggle for me.

On the day of the test, I stare at my question paper and bluntly answer with complicated terms that made no sense at all. I was so used to the American education system where we understood the concept and do hands-on activities so that we can actually apply all the information we learn in class to daily experiences.

What I hated the most was when my teachers would sit in front of the room and pass out the test

papers after they corrected them and comment on how well or how bad we did in front of the whole class. It was so embarrassing when they give us a look and say that they didn’t expect our performance to be so bad. Here in the US, the teachers are so secretive with our grades and they don’t even allow students to share their grades with other students.

This is just my experience on the education in India. Yours might be different. Other than the education there, trust me, you will get the opportunity to have the best time of your life. I wish I could live in Chennai for my whole life”.

aKIl GIrI “I studied in a public school in Fairfax County in Virginia until 4th grade and then I moved to Chennai, India, where I’ve been studying since. In my opinion, the education in the US is much better than the education in India. The style of teaching over in the U.S. makes it easier for the kids to pick up on the subject. The teachers also give a lot of worksheets to help the students recall what they learned in class. Over in India, it is quite different, the teachers mainly read from the textbook and they give the students pointless questions and answers for homework. Don’t get me wrong, a few of the teachers over there can be very good and have the ability to teach very well but, most of the teachers are inexperienced and don’t teach very well. I’ve talked to a few of my friends in the U.S. about school over here and they have told me that they get interesting projects

and do extra activities in school like clubs and various other things. As far as I’ve seen in Indian schools, they don’t do much like this. One other thing I wanted to talk about is the people in my school. I’ve managed to make much more friends over here than I ever had when I was in the US. Maybe this is only my school and other schools are different but I think that the people in India are generally nicer and easier to interact with. Overall I would say if one wanted a very good education then, they should stick to schools in the U.S. The experience will probably be better than the one they would receive in an Indian school.”

Well, there you have it! It was interesting to note at the nearly identical description of the three children regarding their educational and personal experiences in the two continents. personally, I would think that no matter where a kid studies, gaining knowledge on any subject is at his/her fingertips at this day and age, thanks to the internet. Further, I would like to mention here what Dr. prabakaran succinctly put it once, “a college degree is necessary but not sufficient, for success in life”.

Conversely, one can make up for the deficiencies in the school/college education one receives and achieve success in whatever they endeavor in life. Granted, how the young child likes his/her school is all the more important, which is the reason why we wanted to publish the interviews, verbatim. Hope this article would also help parents, who may be considering a move to India.

Rahul: Varun, first I would like to thank you, on behalf of Thendral Mullai, for your time. You are a star and a rarity, probably being the only Tamil person ever playing in the NCAA. It is an honor to speak with you. As a start could you please introduce yourself?

Varun: I am a senior at University of Maryland, College Park, majoring in neurobiology/physiology. I am a senior guard on the basketball team for the Maryland Terrapins. We are 11-1 right now and play one more game against Oakland, we get into Big Ten play (Since the interview: Terrapins are 16-2 and are first in Big 10).

Rahul: Awesome, how did you get interested in basketball?

Varun: Around 8 years old, my uncle bought me a Little Tikes Hoops (the plastic ones) and then he used to show me clips of Michael Jordan, which got me interested and I wanted to play.

Rahul: What made you realize you are basketball material who will be playing in NCAA? Varun: I played in high school and AAU (a club team) and we competed with teams all over the country. A lot of my teammates were recruited for college team so I felt I was just as good as them.

Rahul: How do you manage NCAA basketball and intense academic work at UMD? Varun: A lot of it comes out to really wanting to be successful in both areas. In college, all I do is school work and basketball. If I am out of practice, I am back at my room studying, listening to lectures

Rahul: How did your parents feel about playing sports, especially basketball?

Were they fine with it?

Varun: They were fine with it as long as I do well in school. If I get bad grades, they would want me to cut back on basketball, and focus on academics. But I really try to do good job to keep my grades up. My parents always viewed basketball as a hobby but for me it was a little more than that because I really love it.

Rahul: You mentioned you were interested in both soccer and basketball as a kid, what made you to choose basketball?

Varun: That’s a great question, and when it came to height, I should have probably chose soccer since height is a little bit of an issue for me, but it was something about basketball that I just really loved. Soccer was fun too but just dribbling, crossovers, however shooting 3’s, driving past defenders for layups and

assists really excited me more into basketball.

Rahul: So since you mentioned that height was an issue, what you had to do to overcome that obstacle?

Varun: I really not try to think of it as a disadvantage but I guess if you are shorter, most of the time you are agile and quick hence I believe I am a bit quicker on the court when compared to big players.

Basically you just have to make up for it with other categories such as; shoot better, try to be smarter, faster, and just play as hard as you can.

Rahul: So how are you taking the fan base you have here in Maryland especially from the Tamil community?

Varun: It is very nice and humbling.

I know that I am not as good as I like to be (also shot an air ball on my last game and

still won), but it’s just nice to know that I have a lot of support and it makes me want to work harder.

Rahul: How are Maryland Terrapins?

Varun: They are really good, and they like to recognize that I am an Indian. It’s very funny that they think it’s cool and they are like there is no one like you and why are you playing basketball. But it’s all out of good fun and we really have a good relationship. If you are following us, we have good chemistry on the floor and you can really see that in our wins.

Rahul: What about your coaches, do they give you constructive criticism?

Varun: Coach Turgeon is good about the way he does it. He is very, very passionate and you can tell he wants to win. If you’re not doing something he wants he’s going to let you know. It’s just something as a basketball player, or any athlete, that it’s not that they don’t like you but they want you to do better.

The minute they stop yelling at you, is the minute that they stop caring. So with in yelling at you, it means he still believes in me. You do get yelled at and get constructive criticism but you just have to take the good from it and move on.

Rahul: How does it feel to go to other schools and be nationally televised in ESPN? Varun: It definitely is very cool and it’s nice that people can follow me and the team where we go. It is great to see different players and places especially last year in ACC I got a chance to play against Duke, UNC, FSU. Now since we are in BIG 10 Conference, we will get to play with other bigger schools.

Rahul: Who are your basketball inspirations?

Varun: Obviously I like small players like Nate Robinson, Spud Webb and Earl Boykins (NBA Players). I like them because with my physical structure, they are very effective on the court. I also definitely like Steve Nash who

is not overly athletic but very skilled. I try to look up to him for inspiration.

Rahul: I have seen videos of you dunking the basketball? How you are able to do that?

Varun: Yeah, it’ is very funny because a lot of it I wasn’t able to do in high school. I can always jump reasonably high but as I started lifting and doing weight training, naturally getting stronger which helped a lot. It also definitely helped my vertical.

Rahul: How are you spending time with your family, since they know you have a busy schedule?

Varun: Yeah, well, I’m not even busy. My sister’s busy, so is my mom. Everyone’s busy, you guys are busy – I’m sure. So it’s just whenever we get time to spend with each other we just try to be with each other, hang out, eat together and just do everything we can together.

Pranav/Nithin: Who is your role model you look up to?, Specifically non-sports related?

Varun: Definitely my sister because she’s such a hard worker. She’s been able to go to John Hopkins for Medical School which is no easy feat. I think a lot of it is just a testament to her hard work and her discipline so I just try to take from that and work hard at what I do and try and reach a high level like her.

Then, of course my mom and my dad. I thank their hard work as well – it’s like an Indian mentality to work hard.

Rahul: I heard you also did “Chennai Hoops Creating Hope” so how was that program?

Varun: Yeah, it was cool. We went to a nonprofit organization in Chennai and it pretty much uses basketball as a vehicle of change for poor, impoverished kids in Chennai. All they know is school and going home to wherever they live, and don’t really see much outside of that so this is really there to just give them hope. We’re not really trying to find the next Michael Jordan but we’re just trying

to inspire these kids. It’s not just about basketball.

We teach them leadership, hard work, discipline and team work – all the different things you can learn from basketball that you can apply to real life. It was really neat to see the kids and how they changed over the course of two weeks and how much they loved coming to camp. Their teachers would tell us how they were focused in school. They were really excited. Just the positive changes we saw in just those two weeks was amazing. Not only that but, this was our third year doing it, kids who came back from the first or second year told us how much it changed their lives, was amazing.

Rahul: That’s wonderful using basketball as a vehicle for providing hope. So what are your future plans after you graduate?

Varun: That’s a great question. Right now I’m in the process of deciding if I want to come back next year and play – I have one more year of eligibility.

However, I am graduating this May. So, I’m either going to come back to Maryland and play my last year or take up a job. I’ve been applying to a few places in the consulting area. I’m looking into a public health type consulting if I don’t come back.

Maybe get my MBA after a few years of working or come back and go to Medical School, I haven’t ruled that out. I have a couple of options I’ve been weighing and I have to make a decision in the next few weeks or so.

Rahul: In six, seven or eight years when you start a family, do you want your kids to play basketball?

Varun: I say that now like, ‘Oh I want my kids to play basketball and dribble a ball from the day they’with are born’. But I feel like you can’t force someone to love something. Basketball is something that I just picked up and loved. I’ll push them to do whatever they want and love. I’ll definitely put them in sports and basketball. But if they don’t want to play basketball, I guess I can’t force them to. Just let them do whatever they want. As long as they are working hard, it doesn’t matter. I feel like that is the most important thing.

Rahul: Ok Varun. One last question, What advice do you have for the kids who want to follow your path? Basically play basketball and study well at school?

Varun: Not just basketball, but I guess if you put your heart into it, you can really achieve whatever you want.

Kind of corny, but I truly believe that, if you put all into it, you can achieve everything. It’s just something that you have to work out every day. Basically they say, it takes 10,000 hours to master the craft, and I know I definitely don’t put 10,000 hours but I put a lot of hours for basketball and the more you do, and the more you want to do something badly, higher chances you are going to be good at it and get recognized and make a difference.
