Protesters attack the US Capitol By Daisy Carter news2@thenorthernlight.org
On Jan. 6, the United States Capitol was raided as the vote to certify the election was well underway. ioters consisted of Trump supporters who were trying to overturn the election. “Big protest in DC on January 6th” as well as, “be there, will be wild,” President Trump tweeted on Dec. 19. Trump held a rally at the White House on Jan. 6 where he encouraged his supporters to go to the Capitol building and “we’re going to try and give...our Republicans, the weak ones...the kind of pride and boldness that they need to take back our country.” he said in a speech. Moments later they did exactly that,rioters walked from the White House to the Capitol Building and began protesting. Shortly after, the rioters were breaking windows and doors to gain access to the building. Officer Eugine Goodman was one of the officers protecting the Capitol. A video of Goodman leading rioters away from the senate chambers where the vote was being certified went viral on the internet. The next day after the raid,a bipartisan group of lawmakers said that they would introduce a bill to award Goodman the congressional Gold Medal which is one of the highest awards a civilian can get, according to the Washington Post. After the protest, the FBI quickly began researching who was at the riot.
As of Jan. 17, over 70 people have been charged with raiding the capitol and there are over 100 open cases, according to the New York Times. Jake Angeli from Arizona, also known as Q Shaman in the QAnon community, raided the capital while sporting a hat with horns on it and red white and blue face paint. He was arrested on Jan. 9 for raiding the capitol. Another infamous raider is Adam Johnson from Florida, who was photographed taking House Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s lectern. He was identified and arrested on Jan. 8. Richerd Barnett from Arkansa, had his photo taken with his feet on the House Speakers desk, and was charged with breaking and entering a capitol. During the raid, Trump was on social media calling the raiders true patriots. Two days after the riot, he was banned from twitter and subsequently banned from many other social media sites including Pinterest, Youtube and Facebook. The FBI is asking for the public’s help with identifying anyone who was at the raid. If you know someone who participated in the riot on Jan. 6 the FBI encourages you to call the toll free number 1-800-CALL-FBI.

Movie Analysis: Catch Me If You Can (2002) By Daisy Carter news2@thenorthernlight.org
Traveling in the past year has been out of the question due to the pandemic, but we could always pretend to go out and make a trip of our own. Catch Me if You Can is a film charming film about real life events of a famous con artist who now works for the FBI. The film was directed by Stephen Spelburg and was inspired by true events of Frank Abagnale Jr. Abagnale was known for claiming to be up to 80 identities including a lawyer, a US bureau of prisons agent, an airline pilot, and a psychiatrist all before the age of 22. According to wikipedia, he was known for forging checks and impersonating all of these different identities to get by. Abagnale was arrested twice, but got away both times. He did this for over 5 years until he was caught in France. After a few years in prison, the FBI offered him a job working to identify major fraudulent cases. The film was released on Christmas day of 2002, but there was also a book written about the events also called Catch Me if You Can written in 1980. Leonardo DiCaprio plays Frank Abagnale Jr, Tom Hanks plays Carl Hanratty, and Christopher Walken plays Frank Abagnale. This film stays loyal to the true story of Frank Abagnale Jr with some differences. According to IMDB, unlike the true story, Tom Hanks’ character was actually inspired by multiple FBI agents who worked on the Abagnale case. The real life Frank Abagnale Jr said that when he heard that Leonardo DiCaprio was playing him in the film, he didn’t think
that Leo would be as suave as he was. Abagnale later said that Dicaprio’s performance was great. Before I saw this movie I knew about the Abagnale case. This movie really put things into perspective for how crazy his early life was. While I was watching this movie I couldn’t help but to think how he got away with all of these elaborate plots. When I started to do more research on him, I was amazed with how young he was and how much he got away with things at his age. The movie in general is really fun! I wouldn’t recommend watching this with kids, but it’s a good movie to watch with young adults. Obviously I was intrigued with the actors. I mean Leonardo Dicaprio is amazing as always. I really liked Tom Hanks’ performance as Carl Hanratty. The accent was something to get used to at first, but after a while I found it appropriate. I think what also caught my attention was that John Williams scored this movie. Personally I love a sort of cops and robbers kind of films and this is a prime example of one. Though it follows the story of what happened to Frank Abagnale Jr, it also brings out that character of Carl Hanratty. Even though his character is fake, they still flesh out his character just the same as every other character. Do you have any recommendations on what films I should look into next?
