Stock update: Streaming platforms have seen major gains By Gabby Vance arts1@thenorthernlight.org

Stocks have been changing rapidly as more news about COVID-19 is released. Streaming companies such as Netflix have seen major growth during the quarantine. Prior to the pandemic, Netflix had 167 million subscribers worldwide, according to an April 19 CNN article. That number has grown by around 7 million subscribers since its last quarter between January and March. Netflix’s stock is up 30% this year and on April 19 it reached a record high market value of $193 billion. Disney has seen losses due to its parks being closed, but its new streaming service, Disney+, has reached over 50 million subscribers. ‌ “I’ve been so impressed with Disney+’s execution,” Netflix CEO Reed Hastings said in Ju-

lia Horowitz’s April 22 CNN article. “My hat’s off to them.”‌ Airlines have seen drastic drops in stock prices and revenue. Delta Air Lines reported its first loss in five years. The company lost $534 million between January and March of 2020. Miles flown by paying passengers fell by 17% and fares fell by the end of the quarter, according to an April 22 CNN article. ‌ “The first quarter of 2020 has truly been like no other in our history,” Delta Air Lines CEO Ed Bastian said in Chris Isidore’s April 22 CNN article. ‌ 4.4 million unemployment claims filed by Americans by April 18 affected the economy, resulting in the market not changing very much on April 23. In total, 26.5 million Americans have filed for unemployment

benefits since March. Not all claims will result in benefits, however. Some will be rejected due to requirements such as minimum earnings, according to Anneken Tappe’s April 23 CNN article. Since mid-March to late April, unemployment claims have caused the economy to lose all job gains it has made since the Great Depression. ‌ Roy Franklin, a freshmen business management major at UAA, has seen the changes in the stock market during COVID-19 while investing. ‌ “I have noticed the change in stocks. They are more towards the entertainment platform and definitely away from some major companies that provided jobs before but now are dropping because of the unemployment rates,” Franklin said. ‌ Indexes such as the Dow Jones Industrial Av-

FEATURES 03 UAA seniors reflect on present and future during COVID-19 pandemic THENORTHERNLIGHT.ORG TUESDAY, APRIL 28, 2020

By Christina Swayney features2@thenorthernlight.org

Most classes at the University of Alaska Anchorage transitioned entirely online the week of March 23. Gatherings of more than 10 people are prohibited, resulting in many canceled events, including the spring commencement ceremony. ‌ Emily Wood is a natural sciences major graduating this May. Wood said

that initially, it was pretty difficult to transition to a new way of life as a senior.‌ “I had a really difficult time transitioning into lockdown. It was devastating to realize I’d have no graduation ceremony, that I couldn’t go back to work and that my parents couldn’t come celebrate with me,” Wood said.‌ Jessica Linda Reisinger is also a UAA senior, double majoring in chemistry and natural sciences. She hopes to enter medical PHOTO COURTESY OF EMILY WOOD

Emily Wood, a senior graduating with a degree in natural sciences, has many concerns about finding a job after commencement during the pandemic.

school after graduating. Reisinger is also the vice president of new member education for Tri Sigma, one of the university’s sororities. She has a lot on her plate and said she feels that this semester is just not the same entirely online.‌ “A lot of my classes are hands-on laboratory classes or classes that involve a lot of critical thinking. Neither of these are classes that transition well into an online medium, so the semester has been really difficult. I feel like I’m not really learning much anymore, and it’s just about getting through the semester,” Reisinger said.‌ Wood did not expect her senior year to be anything like what it is now. Seniors already face challenges in their final semester, like grades, finances and just making it to graduation, but she said the pandemic has caused many more.‌ “I’ve weathered natural disasters, several budget crises and now a global pandemic in pursuit of this degree. Looking ahead, I’m very excited to be out of school, but really concerned about finding work. A statewide hiring freeze and a near 20% national unemployment rate is not the world I saw myself entering after college,” Wood said.‌ Students received an

email from UA President Jim Johnsen on April 20, which provided an update on what the fall semester might entail. In the email, Johnsen said the future is unclear, but that the university is trying to make the fall semester as accessible to students as possible.‌ “I assure you we want to make the decision as soon as we can, but it is still too soon to know. The input and advice from public health experts, the chancellors and other university leaders suggest that we hold on a decision about the specific blend of distance delivered and inperson courses until we have an expert assessment of conditions closer to the start of the fall semester,” Johnsen said.‌ Reisinger plans to take her Medical College Admission Test, or MCAT, this summer, although she is concerned about what the coming months will be like for furthering her education.‌ “I worry about the upcoming semester because I don’t like the feeling of just going through the motions of taking classes without really learning anything, and I feel that the online medium perpetuates that. I plan to take my MCAT this summer and the pandemic is also in a way affecting my schedule for preparing for

the exam. Hopefully, it doesn’t affect my performance,” Reisinger said.‌ Wood also had concerns about what the future will bring. ‌ “It’s bizarre to cross such a monumental threshold but feel absolute indifference. I was really fortunate to have accommodating professors who understood better than I did how stressful the change would be. Despite having nothing else to do, I don’t have the same energy for school

and my work doesn’t have the same quality,” Wood said.‌ The university will host an online celebration via a website that will launch on May 3 at 1 p.m. via the UAA website. The Tribute to Our Grads: UAA Spring 2020 Graduation Day Celebration will feature photos of students and their memories, special messages from Chancellor Cathy Sandeen, Johnsen and the conferring of student degrees. ‌

Remote jobs provide employment during difficult times By Christina Swayney features2@thenorthernlight.org

The COVID-19 pandemic has left many Alaskans without jobs or with reduced hours. Businesses that are not considered essential have been temporarily shut down since March 23, leaving residents unsure of where income will come from in the coming months.‌ Though some businesses may not be open for in-person work, they may employ workers remotely. These types of jobs can be flexible and sometimes, all that is required is an internet connection and a computer. Students can apply to these jobs and stay home.‌ There are many types of online jobs. One option is to work as a writer remotely. This can be freelance work, such as articles in magazines or content for online companies such as BuzzFeed. Content creation jobs can also be found at Up Work, which has available positions in all types of media like software startups, blogs and ghostwrit-

ing.‌ Work for people who can do simple editing is available at Grammarly and rates of pay are disclosed upfront. Grammarly only requires basic information from applicants and an online grammar test to assess editing skills.‌ Working from home has a few advantages. For starters, employees can do their jobs from the comfort of their own homes. The idea of starting a workday in pajamas, not having to deal with co-workers in person and having lunch in one’s own kitchen can be appealing. ‌ Working from home has also been shown to help with worker morale. A 2015 Stanford study based on a Chinese travel company called Ctrip focused on whether productivity would be increased if employees worked from home. The study found that after nine months, the at-home group had more positive results than the in-person workers.‌ Nicholas Bloom is one of the researchers that conducted the study. He said the results were not exactly what he expected

during an interview with Harvard Business Review.‌ “We found that people working from home completed 13.5% more calls than the staff in the office did — meaning that Ctrip got almost an extra workday a week out of them. They also quit at half the rate of people in the office — way beyond what we anticipated. And predictably, at-home workers reported much higher job satisfaction,” Bloom said.‌ Handshake is an online platform for college students to get connected with campus jobs, internships and remote employment options. Current UAA students can create an account and filter through personalized searches for specific types of work. They can also sign up to receive notifications of when these types of jobs become available. Handshake can also be used to set up appointments with UAA Career Services, which helps students prep for interviews and job searches.‌ The Remote Works Summit Job Portal is an online database that features remote jobs, com-

panies that are currently offering remote work and online freelance jobs. The site also offers resources for working remotely like e-books, blogs and developmental tools. All of these resources are free of charge.‌ For creative contract jobs, Fiverr offers a wide range of opportunities. Categories for gigs include voice-overs, photoshop skill jobs and graphic design. Creators are paid $5 or more for their work. Another perk for artists of all kinds using Fiverr is that they can build a portfolio while they take on jobs.‌ The Muse is a job search

website that offers remote work options. The site has a clean interface and easy search options. It also offers resources such as job coaching and career advice.‌ For more information on Handshake, visit the UAA web page “Current: Looking for a job or internship? Celebrate graduation at home during COVID-19 pandemic By Gabby Vance arts1@thenorthernlight.org

Graduation is a rite of passage that graduates and their families often look forward to for years. Even though UAA’s spring commencement will look different this year with COVID-19 regulations preventing large gatherings, 2020 graduates can still make the most of this milestone. Here are some ways to celebrate and enjoy graduation at home. Graduation photos The typical grad photos in their caps and gowns, donning their school colors, is a tradition that 2020 graduates can still partake in. While you may not be able to get shots around campus or the other usual scenic locations, quarantine doesn’t have to stop you from getting great photos. A backyard or a flower-filled area around your neighborhood can make a great background for photos. If you want to get crafty, decorating a blank wall to use as a backdrop is another option. Either way, you will be able to look back at the photos and remember graduation

for years to come. Celebrate virtually You don’t have to miss out on celebrating with friends and family just because you can’t leave your house. Zoom, Skype and FaceTime offer ways to connect with people during the quarantine. Graduates can share their special day with the important people in their lives through these videoconferencing programs and make graduation feel like a real celebration. Throw a graduation party It may be smaller and more intimate than expected, but 2020 grads can still enjoy a graduation party. Consider decorating your front door or yard to show your school pride by hanging up balloons, streamers or placing photos on the inside. Decorations can be bought from Micheals, which is currently open in Anchorage, or shipped to your house from an online store. You can enjoy cake, ice cream and other snacks during the party and spend time with the people in your household.

Get crafty With all the extra time you might have during quarantine, consider filling it with some crafts to make graduation more memorable. Making a scrapbook or shadow box to preserve your school memories could be a great way to pass the time and remember graduation. Scrapbooking is a way of preserving and presenting memorabilia, photographs or artwork. All you need is a book or album, the items you want to keep and decorative embellishments. Place the items on the pages of the books and glue or tape them down. Next, add the embellishments or write in the pages for more decoration. A shadow box is a deep frame that can display three-dimensional mementos. The box can then be placed on a shelf or hung on a wall. Just decide what you want to display and then place them in the shadow box. If you want certain items to stay upright, you can glue them in place. Shadow boxes can be purchased at most crafts stores, including Micheals, or ordered online.

Hitbox Review: Forza Horizon 4 — Too fast, too exhilarating

GRAPHIC BY MICHAELINE COLLINS

By John Novotny arts@thenorthernlight.org

Sometimes you just want to drive a suped-up taxicab around the English countryside. ‌ Developer: Playground Games‌ Release date: Oct. 2, 2018‌ Platforms: PC [played] and Xbox One‌ Price: $59.99‌ Forza Horizon 4 is the perfect game to play while chilling out and listening to music or a podcast. While you’re racing across United Kingdom-inspired rural country roads, you can tune into in-game radio stations. There are stations for just about every genre, from classical to

rock. There’s also plenty of variety on each station, so it’ll take a while before you start hearing repeat songs. When that happens though, you can just switch the radio volume setting to zero and have Spotify running in the background. ‌ Besides listening to sick beats, getting lost in the high-octane races are the best way to take your mind off whatever is worrying you. There are many different types of races to keep you occupied. There’s the classic street race, which could be to a destination or three laps. Off-road dirt races take you through winding forest roads and require very technical driving. Crosscountry races forgo roads almost entirely as you race through flagged check-

points across country land or the beach. The most ridiculous races are showcase events where you race against a train, hovercraft or jet. ‌ For each type of race, there’s a type of car best suited to it, such as rally cars fit for off-road events. However, you can switch to any type of car for each race. If you wanted to, you could drive a sports car on a sandy beach. Naturally, the sport’s car will barely have any traction, but it’s still amazing that it’s possible. ‌ There’s also an immense amount of customizability in the difficulty and controls. Besides setting the difficulty of the computer-controlled racers, there are settings for manual and automatic shifting, damage and tire wear and automatic braking. There are even multiple options for how detailed the racing line showing the optimal route is. You can set the line to only appear when you’re going too fast around a corner, for example. For every user-friendly option and increase in computer racer difficulty, you get a percentage bonus to credit rewards after races which can then be used to buy new cars.‌ Forza Horizon 4’s most beginner-friendly feature is the ability to re-

verse time a few seconds into the past. If you accidentally crash through a stone wall along the road and end up completely off course, you can just rewind to before that mistake and try it again. ‌ Along with in-game options, there are plenty of other ways you can control the game. A keyboard and mouse is easily the worst way to play Forza Horizon 4 since it’s difficult to make subtle movements. Besides an Xbox controller, there are racing wheels and foot pedals you can plug into your console or PC to increase your immersion in the game. Since a wheel and pedals can cost up to $500, they’re usually reserved for those who play more simulationbased racing games, such as iRacing. An Xbox controller is more than adequate for Forza Horizon 4.‌ Even if you have no affinity for car culture and just want to drive a fast car, Forza Horizon 4 has you covered. If you are

like me and have no idea how to tune a car or even what that means, you can just download someone else’s tune and install it in your car. All I know is that it makes my car go faster and that is enough for me. There’s also a paint shop to create car skins. Again, instead of customizing one yourself, you can just browse for a skin you want and download it. ‌ I bought Forza Horizon 4 over a year ago and have been coming back to it fairly consistently every few months. Since its debut, Playground Games have released two expansion packs with new areas to explore and races to win. The latest expansion, LEGO Speed Champions, features a completely LEGO environment, including the cars.‌ Seasons in Forza Horizon 4 change every few weeks. Different seasons can drastically change how it feels to race. The roads are covered in snow and ice during the winter,

so choosing a car that can fit snow tires is the best option. During the spring, the roads are almost constantly covered in rainwater, which keeps you on your toes going around sharp corners. With every season change, there are new racing championships and rewards. ‌ Forza Horizon 4 caters to every playstyle, whether you just want to drive around the rural open road or compete in a ranked online championship. Constantly refreshed races in combination with how flexible the game’s driving controls make it a great option for anyone interested in coasting on virtual roads. Even in terms of a pure value proposition, you would be hard-pressed to find a better deal for a racing game than Forza Horizon 4.‌ Want to suggest a video game for review? Everyone off campus should get in on the census. If you live off campus, responding to the 2020 Census is an important and easy way to shape your future. The census impacts federal funding that goes toward critical programs like Pell Grants and health care services. Students who live on campus count too, with the help of campus housing officials.
