On the morning of Sept. 13, roughly 200 people ambled around the muddy construction site just south of the Wells Fargo Sports Complex, where the partial steel skeleton of UAA’s new Engineering and Industry Building can be found. Eleven gold shovels were propped in a mound of dirt for the groundbreaking ceremony that was to take place.

The 81,500-square-foot facility, projected to begin operations fall 2015, aims to meet the needs of growing School of Engineering enrollment, which has quadrupled since 2000. Smoke-free initiative increases momentum

There is no safe exposure amount to smoke.

This is the message UAA’s Smoke-Free Task Force hopes to communicate. The task force was formed in response to a challenge made by the United States Department of Health and Human Services for all college campuses to go smoke- and tobaccofree by 2016.

UAA’s task force is made up of faculty, staff and students who believe everyone has the right to breathe fresh air. As Alaskan oil reserves dwindle, belts will require tightening and the state will take a close look at budgets. The University of Alaska is young, and just as a malnourished child may suffer effects into adulthood, the university may suffer in the long-term if it doesn’t find the best use of an inevitable decrease in funding.

UAA is addressing these problems through a massive assessment process called prioritization that seeks to examine every one of its academic programs and administrative functions. Man allegedly held against will at hospital

Family and friends of former UAA Aviation and Technology graduate Bret Bohn say he is being held against his will and forcibly medicated at Providence Alaska Medical Center. According to Bohn’s family, hospital officials are planning to transfer him to Johns Hopkins Medical Research Facility in Baltimore, Md., against his will.

Bohn, a hunting and fishing guide, developed sleeping problems while hunting in late September through early October. Upon his return home, Bohn told his parents he had not slept in several days, so they took him to the emergency room at Providence. Student president faces impeachment

The USUAA Rules Committee held an impeachment hearing last week to oust Student Body President Drew Lemish. Charges include lack of attendance at assembly meetings, inappropriate behavior at assembly meetings, taking vacations without proper notifications and not responding to communications from other assembly members, students, staff and faculty regarding official USUAA business.

Lemish was unable to attend the hearing due to schedule conflicts, but he prepared a written statement that was read to those present. The Rules Committee, when asked if they had made fair accommodations to schedule the hearing during a time in which Lemish could attend, said emails were sent to Lemish in a timely manner, but he failed to respond. www.thenorthernlight.org/2014/04/15/studentpresident-faces-impeachment/

What does it take to become a Commencement speaker?

Commencement, in addition to being a celebration, is a time for reflection on both a chapter of life that is coming to a close and the prospects for the next chapter in a graduate’s life.

Every year students apply for the honor of being their class’ student Commencement speaker. But how does one go about becoming the voice for their class? And what have past Commencement speakers done throughout their college career to warrant such an honor?

In order to be eligible an individual must meet three requirements. The applicant must be graduating in the fall or spring that he or she applies, be enrolled in three credits with good standing, and must have ongoing leadership involvement for four semesters if he or she is receiving a bachelor’s degree. Only two semesters of involvement are required for other degrees or certificates.

Applicants must complete and submit the application on UAA’s website. Once a student applies their applications goes the Student Commencement Speaker Advisory Board made up of two faculty members and three graduating students that are not applying. The dean of students appoints all members of the board.

The board is responsible for determining not only if the applicants meet the above-mentioned requirements but also reviews their proposed Commencement topics and determines each topic’s relevance. Individuals who make it through this phase of the application process will be interviewed and deliver their finalized speech to the board.

Finally the board makes their recommendations and submits them to the Vice Chancellor for Student Affairs for final approval.

2010: Katherine (Katie) Alice Marquette

Katie graduated in 2010, cum laude with UAA Leadership Honors. In October 2009 Katie was one of 55 international students to receive funding from the National Science Foundation to attend the BOREAS Final Conference in Rovaniemi, Finland. Later in the spring of 2009, Katie was awarded the Policy Research Internship at the Institute of Social and Economic Research (ISER) where she conducted a study on the availability of same-sex domestic partner benefits in Alaska’s private sector. She also received a Research in the Community Grant from the UAA Office of Undergraduate Research to continue her

project at ISER, focusing on the inclusion of sexual orientation protections in Alaska’s private sector. In April of 2010 Katie was awarded the UAA Office of Undergraduate Research Discovery Grant and the USUAA Student Travel Grant to present her research at the Pacific Sociological Association Undergraduate Poster Session in Oakland, California. On top of Katie’s numerous academic achievements, she also worked at the UAA Career Services Center beginning in 2007.

2011: Stacie Meisner

Throughout Stacie’s UAA career she was a member of the Student Athletic Advisory Board, member of Sigma Tau Delta (an English honor society) and was the editor of Understory, an undergraduate creative arts journal as well as worked as a tutor for reading and writing in the Learning Resource Center. In addition to presenting at the 2011 UAA Student Showcase.

2012: Kent Spiers

Kent Spiers utilized his time with UAA to participate in organizations like the International Student Association, UAA National Coalition Building Institute, UAA Sociology Club, The Family — the campus LGBT group — the Office of Sustainability and the Institute of Social and Economic Research, among other things. Kent earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in sociology with a minor in environmental studies.

2013: Kelsey Waldorf

During her time with UAA Kelsey participated in the Seawolf Debate Team, representing UAA at a national conferences, she was a member of the University Honors College and participated in the Forty-Ninth State Fellows program. She has worked as a student researcher on a project with the Alaska State Troopers and Anchorage Police Department, and mentored with the UAA TAPESTRY program, which trains and matches student mentors with students who have mental disabilities. Kelsey obtained her B.A. in justice with minors in political science and communications.

2014: Michael Ulroan

This year’s Commencement speaker is Michael Ulroan.

He will be the first student Commencement speaker graduating from the Alaska Native Science and Engineering Program. Despite growing up in a rural village, Ulroan has pushed through all the obstacles and will be graduating with a major in Civil Engineering. After college he hopes to work with the Alaska Native Tribal Health Consortium, ANTHC, or even just find employment within the engineering industry anywhere in Alaska.

He and his cross country running teammates in Chevak—a rural Cup’ik Eskimo village of about 1,000 in Western Alaska—ran their hearts out to claim their fourth regional championship in a row.

That became his ticket to college.

in the history of his village, and credits his parents and the Alaska Native Science & Engineering Program (ANSEP) with inspiring him to stay the course in what turned out to be a tough race.

Michael, a future structural design engineer, is enthusiastic about his goals to pursue an engineering master’s degree and work with ANSEP in its campaign: “Building a National Model for Excellence in Higher Education Programs.�

04 UAA seniors offer advice on how to finish college

news@thenorthernlight.org “I’m really excited. I’ve put in my time and effort to get to this point, so I’m really excited to be able to finally have that recognition.”

What UAA student Younger Oliver is talking about is graduating with her Bachelor of Arts degree in English, with a minor in Communications. Oliver, who is graduating with honors, was recently recognized with other humanities majors at a graduation reception in the Administration building. She plans on eventually working her way up to a Ph.D. in Higher Education Policy. Oliver said that getting an education and finishing a degree is valuable because these days most employers are looking for people who have degrees.

Oliver, who was home-schooled her entire life, said her freshman year was the first time she had been around people her age, so in order to learn how college worked she got a job on campus. Through her job, she was able to network with people and make friends who were going through the same adjustment period.

Oliver said another thing that got her through college was learning good time management skills and working efficiently. She also made a point not to study at home.

“I don’t study at home because there’s

sleep or TV or Internet or all sorts of other distractions, and when I go home, I can actually feel refreshed and relaxed,” she said.

“The first few years of college were hard,” said business management major Russell Carlton. But once he started taking his core classes things got easier.

“The concepts were easier to understand, and I was no longer overwhelmed with the size of the textbooks,” he said.

Carlton, who worked 40 hours per week at a local credit union throughout his college career, said the most difficult thing about college was trying to find the balance between a social life, school and work.

“Without my parents pushing me and my brothers and sisters pushing me, I might not have been able to graduate,” Carlton said.

“But I feel incredibly honored to graduate, especially being the first one in my family to do so.”

Carlton suggests freshmen see their advisers as soon as possible in order to graduate in four years instead of five, because it took him a while to figure out what he wanted to major in.

“I goofed off the first two and a half years, pretty much ­— taking fun classes, taking classes I thought were interesting,” he said . Because it took him a while to decide on a major, he ended up taking ten classes that didn’t count toward his degree. Carl-

Younger Oliver, graduating with a bachelor’s degree in English Literature, was a runner-up for Commencement speaker and will walk with four separate honors cords.

Russell Carlton, graduating with a bachelor’s Degree in Business Management, worked 40 hours a week to put himself through school. He is the first of his nine siblings to earn a degree.

ton said that was a negative consequence because he spent more time in school than was necessary.

Carlton also suggests keeping up on homework and visiting professors during office hours.

“Professors should know your first name. They should know you are, and you should get to know your professors,” he said.

Carlton, who has three older biological siblings and five younger adopted siblings, is the first person in his immediate

family to graduate from college. He said college offers the opportunity to build connections in the university setting that one would not be able to build anywhere else, and those connections are invaluable in the working world.

Carlton would eventually like to work in law enforcement, but he also sees himself working in development at non-profit organization.

Both Oliver and Carlton said there were many valuable reasons to at least give college a try.

Rites of passage

Translated by George Hyde “Okay, Klax. You win. I’ll stash you in my suitcase in the cargo area above the seat. Just don’t force that kind of thing again. Please!”

Ha! I knew George would yield. That is his apology letter that I promised to post here in the last issue. So now that that’s out of the way, let’s talk about what the rest of the issue is talking about: graduation.

Upon reaching the ends of their larval stages, young slugs are sent to unknown planets to scout for life, and they may come back only when they have discovered a useful life form for us to enslave. It’s tough, but if you can’t find and enslave a new species, then you’re not fit for the Slug Empire.

That’s how I met George. They sent me to Earth, I found him, plopped on his head and radioed in the rest of the Slug armada.

It’s just taking them a really long time to get here.

So I guess in those terms, I haven’t technically “graduated” yet, but then again, your interpretation of graduation is far, far different (and far more forgiving) than mine.

Your typical graduation involves dressing in a celebratory cap and gown, followed by a ceremony in which graduating class members receive diplomas, after which they are dumped into the real world to go find success. Huh. Maybe we aren’t so different after all.

But it’s so much more festive than the Slug rite of passage, where the Empire just slings you off into space with little to no fanfare. So I suppose there’s that.

Naturally, George has experience with this, having graduated from high school — as I imagine most of you have. In addition, he was also in the high school band, where, for his four high school years, he played that one song that everyone always associates with graduation (“Pomp and Circumstance,” I think? I don’t know).

The difference between high school and college is that you don’t have to attend this massive ceremony. In college you can just get your degree mailed to you or you can pick it up or I don’t know how it works. So that raises the question: What’s with the fanfare? Nobody threw a big ceremony for

‘Why butts?’ a Q&A with the artist

me when I was shipped off here. In fact, that kind of makes me jealous.

I suppose, thinking about it, that there’s one reason to walk: family. The family wants pictures. They always will. They want to be there, in the flesh, as you receive your degree. And I suppose that’s reasonable enough. It’s only the new beginning of your life, and it’s natural that they want to be a part of it.

There’s one other aspect of graduation that doesn’t have to do with the actual ceremony, and that’s the graduation party.

George has been invited to several, seeing as most of the journalism and communications folks he takes classes with are moving on this semester. One of them invited over 150 friends, seemingly in an effort to annoy the other patrons of the restaurant.

It’s a nice way to top off the semester, so long as folks remain responsible and don’t party too hard. You don’t want to tarnish the reputation that you’ve been working for years to achieve, so be an adult. You’ve technically been one for your entire college life — unless you’re one of those kids who came here before adulthood — so act like it. You are a professional. You just earned a degree proving it.

Overall, this time of year makes me jealous. Why couldn’t I get a cool party to send me off as I was transported here? I suppose that’s one of the perks of being human, or of being in a free society.

Well, once the fleet arrives, this is another tradition I’ll try and instill into the regime. Hopefully, they’re open to it.

RESISTANCE IS FUTILE. EMBRACE THE SEAWOLF SLUG.

Final thoughts

Well, it looks like this is it. As I gaze out my window I see an odd cycle of students packing their belongings into cars and throwing trash on the ground, as workers in yellow vests pick up trash while trying to avoid getting hit by frenzied students packing their belongings into cars. There’s probably a lesson to be learned in there somewhere, but for me it’s the final sign that another year is coming to a close.

My final assignments are almost done and ready to go, my dorm is bare and devoid of food like the Grinch visited overnight — a fact which the mice infesting our dorm have formally complained about — and the entryway is filled with my roommates belongings that they’re probably planning to abandon out of convenience. It’s that time again already.

We’ve all got some final business to take care of before we wrap it up here. Some of us have to grovel for that final half-percent to pass a class. Others have to coordinate which family members can see them graduate without causing an internal feud. Me? I just have to remember to make it down to the share rooms in the residence halls at some point to collect anything that can be sold on Craigslist.

From the sound of the emails I’ve been skimming, it seems that some of us will be “commencing” in the next few days. What that means I can only guess, but they tell me that those who participate are never seen on campus again and often go out in the world to work for large piles of money.

So the best of luck to those of you who are moving onward and upward in the next few days. If it’s possible to send a message

back from the other side, then let me know if I should switch my degree to something more marketable before it’s too late. (Also, exactly how big are these piles of money?

Are we talking “Scrooge McDuck money swimming pool”-sized here?)

This may very well have been the hardest year of college for the majority of the people I know, but my friends and I certainly made the most of it. From discovering television treasures such as “Rick and Morty” and “Todd and The Book of Pure Evil” (both of which I highly recommend) to near-fatal trips to surf the bore tide, we somehow found a way to cram as much life into the free time between classes as possible.

Inadvisable hiking trips, St. Patrick’s Day parties that managed to dye most of my belongings green and a general lack of repercussions for my procrastination — these are the things I’ll remember from this year. (Not to mention the three separate occasions I crammed a full-size road bike and two passengers into my pint-size car.)

Whether you’re coming back, wearied and ready for another helping of college, or moving on to the frightening world of employment, I wish you the best of luck.

You may have been paying for the academic knowledge, but the things you’ll remember from your time here won’t be things you can quickly relearn from a Wikipedia article.

From frantic nights spent at the library, to late night visits to “South Hall” for a game of pool, we’ve all had our fair share of memories here. Whether you finished in four — in which case, tell me your secret — or you’re on an extended plan like everyone I know, you’ll have a lifetime of memories to accompany that coveted degree.

So go out and enjoy the summer. Hike mountains, kayak fjords, explore the backcountry or even do whatever it is those poor souls from the Lower 48 do for fun. Come back refreshed in the fall for work, adventure or another round of classes. But whatever you do, enjoy yourself and remember the memories you made here, even if your adviser has warned you that you may have years’ worth of memories left to make.

Well, here we are, the awkward optimistic conclusion part of the column. I promised myself I wouldn’t ramble on with clichés and poorly formed metaphors, so here’s the final word. Good luck to those of you lucky enough to graduate this round.

And for those of you who didn’t, assuming I haven’t fled to Hawaii by next fall, then have a drink on me.

So, fellow mythical ocean wolves, congratulations, good luck and well done on another fantastic year.

Roll credits, guys, that’s the end of year three.

Hailing from Dallas, Texas, Pjae Naiima, better known as the elusive “Butt Sketcher,” comes to UAA every year to draw the derrieres of countless students.

The legacy began when Naiima’s boss, Krandel Lee Newton, was painting a picture of someone. In the middle of painting, he left to go get something. Someone came by and asked to purchase his unfinished work. Over the years his friends suggested he start up his business as a butt sketcher. Newton and a team of four other “Original Butt Sketchers” now travel the world to share their art. Puppy therapy on campus

Feeling stressed? Pet a puppy.

According to Doug Markussen, director of the campus Environmental Health, Safety and Risk Management Support Department or EHSRMS, UAA could join other campuses throughout the United States that have therapy dogs to help relieve stressed out students. The key word is “could.”

“I’ve had many students and faculty, even administrators above me request animal or puppy therapy on campus,” Markussen said.

“But no one has taken the initiative to make it happen.” Last year, Yale Law School’s website introduced their therapy dog, Monty, which caused a worldwide media frenzy.

Celebrating the Day of the Dead in Alaska

Young Mexicans swirled around traditional alters built to welcome the spirits of passed on ancestors. Their faces were painted with skull-like images, symbolism which echoed the sentiments of Mexican Nobel Prize winning poet, Octavio Paz: “The Mexican, in contrast, is familiar with death. (He) jokes about it, caresses it, sleeps with it, celebrates it. It is one of his favorite toys and his most steadfast love.”

Members of the Mexican community hosted El Dia de Muertos – The Day of the Dead at the Northway Mall this weekend with traditional art, dance and music. Hundreds of visitors basked in the celebration.

Celebrations steeped in culture

The Chinese culture opens a door to a world of legends and gives individuals an opportunity for another chance at change. The Chinese New Year celebration that kicks off Jan. 31 offers participants that opportunity while reflecting on past accomplishments.

The New Year is one of the longest celebrations in the Chinese culture. According to Jiajia Ru, Confucius Institute faculty member, the months in a Chinese year are based on a lunar calendar, which dictates that each month begins on the darkest day. Warming cold case files

Flames consumed the hot Louisiana morning in 1964. The owner of a shoe repair shop, Frank Morris awoke to find his shop ablaze and a shotgun aimed at him. “Get back, nigger!” the man wielding the gun yelled. Within seconds Morris, who was in the shop, became engulfed in flames. His cries echoed. Morris died, and no one was charged for his murder.

Hank Klibanoff, co-author of the Pulitzer Prize-winning book “The Race Beat,” about news coverage during the civil rights era, will speak on campus at 7 p.m. March 20. Summer video game preview

gchyde@thenorthernlight.org For many Alaskans, summer is the time of year for hiking, fishing and exploring the great backyard that is the Last Frontier. But for many others, summer is catch-up season — a drought of games that allows gaming enthusiasts to pick up the pace and play all of those games they’ve collected. But that doesn’t mean there aren’t a lot of games to look forward to this summer, so let’s take a look!

“Transistor”

Developer: Supergiant Games Platform: PS4, PC Release Date: May 20, 2014

Supergiant’s last title, “Bastion,” was a huge hit for action-RPG fans, so many are looking forward to their new cyberpunk title, “Transistor.” It borrows a lot from both sci-fi and from the world of fairy tales, as the story takes a lot of riffs from the tale of “The Little Mermaid.” The main character, Red, is a singer who comes into the possession of an intelligent sword called the Transistor, and a totalitarian regime known as the Process wants to silence her and possess the sword. It’s an interesting setup, and if it sticks with Supergiant’s stellar action-RPG elements, it will be another standout in 2014’s gaming lineup.

“Watch_Dogs”

Developer: Ubisoft Montreal Platform: PS4, PS3, XBO, 360, Wii U, PC Release Date: May 27, 2014

Many are heralding this title as the first true next-gen experience, and while the term “next-gen” is a bit abused in that statement (it’s also coming to PS3 and 360), it still looks like it will do a lot of new for the gaming world. In this open-world, “Grand Theft Auto”-esque experience, the main weapon is not a gun or baton, but a smartphone used to manipulate the connected world around the player. It makes for a great setup for some great moments, and those who anticipate it certainly aren’t wrong to do so.

“Lifeless Planet”

Developer: Stage 2 Studios Platform: PC Release Date: TBA

This title actually comes from the local folks of Stage 2 Studios, who work out of Wasilla, and it’s been generating a lot of buzz from the PC gaming community. “Lifeless Planet” revolves around an astronaut who lands on the titular lifeless planet, which was originally thought to be filled with life. It aims to be a spiritual successor to games like “Another World” or “The Dig,” and it’s hard not to see those influences. The game is currently available on Steam’s Early Access program, which allows players to pre-order the title and play through about a third of the game. While there are some kinks to work out — the camera is wonky, the platforming is clunky and controller support isn’t entirely there yet — the game is incredibly atmospheric, and the story will keep players glued. Fans of games like “Journey” should definitely take note.

“Wildstar”

Developer: Carbine Studios Platform: PC Release Date: June 3, 2014

Those in the massively multiplayer online space are anticipating the release of “WildStar” with bated breath. This is for a variety of reasons. It comes from Carbine Studios, which was formed by a group of Blizzard employees who wanted to develop “anything but ‘World of Warcraft,’” as is the company’s current stance. It promises to add a lot of features to streamline the traditional MMORPG experience, including a more flexible movement system and expansive housing mechanics. And finally, like the cherry on a delicious sundae, it boasts a Pixar-esque, cartoonish art style that lends itself perfectly to both its game play and its enjoyable sense of humor. Those looking for a new MMO to roam shouldn’t pass “WildStar” up.

“Murdered: Soul Suspect” Developer: Airtight Games Platform: PS4, PS3, XBO, 360, PC Release Date: June 3, 2014

On the other side of the spectrum, fans of single-player mystery-adventure titles like “L.A. Noire” and “Ghost Trick” have been looking forward to “Murdered: Soul Suspect.” The game comes from Airtight Games, which has a lot to prove after the relatively subpar “Dark Void” and “Quantum Conundrum,” but many still have faith. The game revolves around a ghost who is searching for his own murderer, with the help of a girl who both witnessed the man’s death and can speak with and see ghosts. The premise sounds very similar to “Ghost Trick,” but the developers have claimed that the style and tone will be completely different, so it’ll be interesting to see how it turns out.

Top 5 movies to look forward to this summer

Plenty of popcorn flicks and more underrated features are coming out this summer. Whether you want action, drama or comedy, these summer blockbusters have just what you’re looking for. Between nights around a bonfire and vacationing out of state, here are five movies to fill up that extra time.

“Guardians of the Galaxy”

Director: James Gunn Starring: Chris Pratt, Benicio del Toro Release date: Aug. 1, 2014

Based on the Marvel superhero team of the same name, “Guardians of the Galaxy” follows American pilot Peter Quill, also known as Star-Lord, pursued by the superhuman Ronan after he steals his coveted orb.

Now on the run, Quill has to form an uneasy alliance with the galaxy’s most troubled misfits: Gamora, Rocket Raccoon, Drax the Destroyer and Groot.

In the midst of an international war on terror, Chechen Muslim Issa Karpov (Grigoriy Dobrygin, “4 Days in May”) immigrates to Hamburg, Germany, where he is recruited by the alcoholic anti-terrorism ringleader Gunter Bachmann (Philip Seymour Hoffman, “God’s Pocket”). But when Karpov is labeled as a militant jihadist, Hamburg intelligence head Dieter Mohr (Rainer Bock, “War Horse”) makes a plan to kidnap the man and find out what he knows.

Shot from 2002 to 2014, “Boyhood” follows divorced couple Dad (Ethan Hawke, “Before Midnight”) and Mom (Patricia Arquette, “Vijay and I”) as they raise their son, Mason (Ellar Coltrane, “Fast Food Nation”).

A failed experiment to stop global warming kills almost all life on Earth, except for the lucky few riding the globe-spanning train Snowpiercer. The train becomes its own world, developing a class system where things take an explosive turn.

After the bitterly hateful and violent former soldier Eric (Guy Pearce, “Iron Man 3”) is robbed of all of his possessions, he goes off on a hunt for the gang who stole everything from him. One gang member, Rey (Robert Pattinson, “Cosmopolis”), is left to die and Eric enlists his help.

MGMT to perform at Moose’s Tooth

Don Decker: 50 percent art, 50 percent education

Despite past struggles to get people to art shows, hundreds have now viewed UAA art professor Don Decker’s “50/50” art exhibit. The show opened Sept. 6 at the International Gallery of Contemporary Art and is a look into Decker’s 50 years of teaching and artistry.

The Saturday following the opening, Decker held a reception and theater performance at the Anchorage Museum. The performance was a witty and engaging look at Decker’s past that portrayed his personality. It opened with Decker’s daughter, Julie Decker, talking about her “oh shit” reactions to all her father’s ideas. Senshi-Con, a smash with Alaskan geeks

The mornings of Sept. 28 and 29, 5th Avenue drivers were treated to something of a shock. Geeks in costume lined up these mornings to attend Senshi-Con, Alaska’s oldest and most reputable anime convention and nerd mecca.

Senshi-Con had its humble beginnings in 2005. It was hosted in West Anchorage High School’s cafeteria by the school’s anime club. Since that first year, the event was held in UAA’s own Student Union, where it remained and hosted famous guests, such as voice actresses Caitlin Glass and Laura Bailey.

‘Sleying the Reed’ weaves a moving narrative

arts@thenorthernlight.org MGMT, the electric indie rock group famous for its songs “Kids” and “Electric Feel,” will make its first appearance in the 49th state on May 29. The concert is part of Broken Tooth Brewing’s First Tap Concert Series, where monthly featured beers are unveiled. This makes the MGMT concert a 21-andover event only.

MGMT has been in the music scene since 2002, and all three of its albums — “Oracular Spectacular,” “Congratulations” and “MGMT” — have made the Billboard Top 200 at No. 38, 2 and 14 respectively.

MGMT’s name is the abbreviation for “management,” which the band chose after changing its name from “The Management” because of another band using

the same name.

MGMT’s music is mixup of techno, electronic and indie rock sounds.

“I really like them when I’m doing homework or dancing.

Their songs are good summer songs,” said marketing major Carlee Heinmillier. “(They’re) kind of electric, kind of indie rock, but at the same time kind of techno. They’re different. It’s hard to put a label to their music or their genre.”

Moose’s Tooth staff recommends carpooling to the event as much as possible. Parking is limited because the concert will be right outside in the parking lot. Moose’s Tooth patrons cannot park in the lots nearby.

The concert will continue in rain or shine as well.

Under a lattice of lights, the UAA Dance Ensemble emerges in sterile outfits. The performance following, “Sleying the Reed: A Movement Meditation on Women and Violence,” is a resonant portrayal of women’s struggle.

Using spoken word and movement, “Sleying” conveys the struggle with violence against women.

“There’s a tremendous amount of young girls being trafficked, kidnapped and sold into sexual slavery,” said Katherine Kramer, director of the production and term instructor in the theater and dance department. “To me, it is the moral issue of the 21st century.”

Silver anniversary of Anchorage Folk Festival

The 25th anniversary of the Anchorage Folk Festival has kicked off, and it’s as crowd-pleasing as ever with an array of folk artist performances and a variety of dance and music workshops held on campus and around town.

The Anchorage Folk Festival began 25 years ago due to the success of the Alaska Folk Fest in Juneau. It is volunteer-run and works to support folk arts within the Anchorage area and promote local musicians. The organization has held the two-week Anchorage Folk Festival annually since its inception. The festival features local musicians and guest artists every year.

Iron & Wines’ Sam Beam interviews with TNL

Indie/folk artist Sam Beam, better known by his stage name Iron & Wine, is a father of five who went to college for painting and pursued film for his masters. He went from being a film producer to a professor. From there Beam was offered the opportunity to record for Sub Pop Records. He hasn’t looked back since, launching himself fully into creating and recording music as well as touring and growing out his beard.

Beam most recently worked with Nonesuch Records and came out with his fifth album, “Ghost on Ghost.”

5 hikes around Anchorage that aren’t Flat Top

arts@thenorthernlight.org Take a break from hiking Flat Top, the most hiked trail in Alaska, to take a look at some less-hiked trails. Despite the lack of crowds, these summer trails are just as good.

Trailhead: Take North Birchwood exit off the Glenn Highway north of Anchorage and turn right and then right again on Old Glenn Highway, parking lot located just past Loretta French Park on the left.

Equipment: Water and food

This hike has some hard pushes, but is well worth the sweat and effort required. The hike begins with an easy upward sloping trail with intermittent downward sloping areas before coming to some relatively steep inclines.

The steep inclines stop when you reach the pass about two miles in. Here you can see out into the Cook Inlet and the Matanuska Valley. The trail will often split with snowmobile and hiker trails diverging for a short time.

For a wider trail take the snowmobile route, but for the best views and most immersion into the mountain, the hiker trail routes are best. The trail tends to be muddy on the first mile or so, but is easy to maneuver around.

The hike in early July will have lush, tall grass and wildflowers in the open meadows of the pass. Lots of water and lunch are a good idea if planning to do the whole hike. This hike also connects to trails at the Skyline Drive Trailhead, where the trail to Mount Baldy is.

Trailhead: Take Eagle River Loop/Hiland Road exit off of the Glenn Highway north of Anchorage and turn right on Hiland Road, turning right on South Creek Road and then right onto West River Drive, parking lot on the left.

Equipment: Water and food for day hike, overnight gear for camping, rain gear suggested.

Hikers at South Fork Eagle River have the options of hiking up the saddle to the pass and then along Rendezvous Peak Ridge (which connects to Arctic Valley) or hiking along the south fork of Eagle River to Symphony Lake and Eagle Lake.

The saddle provides a short day hike for those who don’t have a long time to hike and want a view of Eagle River Valley and the surrounding Chugach Mountains, whereas the hike to the lakes is for those who want a long day hike to an overnight hike in the subalpine along the river.

The hike to the lakes is relatively flat and the terrain isn’t difficult until the boulder field between Eagle Lake and Symphony Lake, which shouldn’t be too difficult for most. If you are looking for a sip of water to cool off at the end of the hike, the water from Symphony Lake is most suitable for drinking because there is no glacial runoff.

Highway junction. Turn left onto Arlberg Avenue continuing on the road until it ends and then turning left onto Northface Road, where Alyeska Resort’s visitor parking lot is.

Equipment: Water and food, containers for picking berries

This trail goes through temperate rain forest and has numerous plants and trees.

During early August, berry pickers are seen on the sides of the trail gathering blueberries. There is also an abundance of lichens clinging to the trees and mushrooms scattering the wet forest floor. There are great views of the creeks at the gorge and the bridge over Winner Creek before the hand tram.

The trail is well maintained and the chances of getting super muddy are slim unless you plan on trekking off the trail to pick berries.

At 2.5 miles at the confluence of Glacier Creek, Winner Creek and Crow Creek hikers can cross the gorge using the hand tram. If hikers wish to continue after crossing they may continue onto the Girdwood Iditarod Trail that ends at Girdwood Elementary School.

Note that the hand tram between the two trails is sometimes out of service during maintenance.

Trailhead: all off of the Glenn Highway south of Anchorage at the Potter Creek Trailhead (mile 115.1), McHugh Creek Trailhead (mile 111.9), Rainbow Trailhead (mile 108.4) and Windy Corner Trailhead (mile 106.7).

Rainbow and Windy Trailheads directly off highway and parking is limited.

Equipment: Water and food, windbreaker.

The Turnagain Arm Trail offers hikers a variety of options for starting and ending their hikes and offers spectacular views. Hikers will be able to see the Turnagain Arm and take in the surrounding aspens and rocky outcroppings.

Dall sheep may even be spotted above the trail in the rocks.

The trail parallels the Seward Highway and the Turnagain Arm. Taking the small side trails to the rocky cliffs above the highway will allow for the most open view of Turnagain, where Beluga whales can be seen in the summer.

The Turnagain Arm generally has wind, and it would be wise to bring a windbreaker.

Between the Potter Creek Trailhead and the McHugh Creek Trailhead, the elevation gain is not substantial except for what’s right next to each trailhead for a short time.

Between McHugh Creek Trailhead and Rainbow Trailhead the incline is much more substantial but still very manageable. From the Rainbow Trailhead to the Windy Corner Trailhead the elevation gain is much like that between Potter Creek and McHugh Creek trailheads.

Trailhead: Exit the Seward Highway at DeArmoun Road, heading toward the mountains and away from the inlet. Continue on DeArmoun Road to Upper DeArmoun Road. Take Upper DeArmoun Road until it ends and splits into View Heights Way and Canyon Road. Follow Canyon Road to the right. Canyon Road changes to Upper Canyon Road to Highland Road and back to Canyon Road The trailhead is at the end. (Note: The last part of Canyon Road is unpaved and steep. Those without a four-wheel-drive SUV may want to park at the gate separating Highland Road and the last stretch of Canyon Road, then walk to the trailhead. If you park here, this will add an extra 1.3 miles.

Equipment: Water and food, windbreaker.

While Rabbit Lake can be accessed from the McHugh Creek Trailhead off the Seward Highway, the trailhead off DeArmoun Road has an easier, less steep trail to the lake. At the end of the hike Rabbit Lake sits with the Suicide Peaks behind it, offering a breathtaking view of the mountain lake. This trail also branches off to Flat Top from the backside.

Parking for this trail is limited to roadside parking on the narrow Canyon Road, and there aren’t facilities available at the trailhead so be prepared. Signs indicating the trailhead are also nonexistent, but it is located at the very end of Canyon Road.

2013-14 athletic season review

The 2013-14 Alaska Anchorage women’s basketball team earned a 19-9 record and qualified for the program’s seventh NCAA Tournament in the past eight seasons, while tying for third in the Great Northwest Athletic Conference with a 12-6 league mark. The Seawolves led the nation with 14.3 steals per game and paced the GNAC in seven categories, including scoring offense with 79.6 points per game. Big victories included a double-overtime win over Div. I UC Riverside, season sweeps of Seattle Pacific and Alaska Fairbanks, and home wins over fellow NCAA qualifiers Saint Leo, Western Washington, MSU Billings and Simon Fraser. Individually, senior forward Kylie Burns and freshman point guard Kiki Robertson both earned AllGNAC 2nd Team honors.

The Alaska Anchorage men’s basketball team earned the program’s ninth straight winning season, posting a 17-13 overall record in 2013-14.

The Seawolves broke 25 school records and 14 Great Northwest Ath-

letic Conference records, while leading the nation in best assist-turnover ratio and fewest turnovers per game. Individually, junior guard Travis Thompson was a First Team All-GNAC selection, while junior guard/forward Teancum Stafford earned Second Team Academic AllAmerica honors.

The Alaska Anchorage men’s and women’s ski team concluded the 2014 season with their 34th all-time showing at the NCAA Championships, where they furnished five All-America honors and finished eighth as a team. The Seawolves who were led by seniors Lukas Ebner and Niko Harmanen, with two All-America awards apiece. Ebner was also named RMISA’s Nordic MVP and was a RMISA First-Team honoree. Picking up RMISA First-Team honors on the women’s side was Marine Dusser. Combined, the Seawolves furnished 33 individual top-10 performances this season and finished a season-high fourth at the Utah Invite in January.

Chelimo awarded MacKay Athlete of the Year again

at the Van Andel Arena. The Seawolves concluded the slate with an 18-16-4 record — the program’s best since joining the WCHA — and their first winning season since 1992-93. UAA says goodbye to five seniors that guided the team to its successful campaign — Matt Bailey, Rob Gunderson, Chris Kamal, Jordan Kwas and Quinn Sproule.

The Alaska Anchorage volleyball team earned its fourth NCAA Tournament bid in the past five seasons and extended the program record with its sixth straight winning season, finishing 21-10 overall in 2013. The Seawolves went 15-3 in the Great Northwest Athletic Conference to place runner-up by just one match, while marking their fifth consecutive winning record and top-four league finish. UAA also set program records with its 9-0 GNAC road record and 9-0 in the league campaign. Individually, sophmore outside hitter Katelynn Zanders earned AVCA 2nd Team All-America and unanimous All-GNAC honors, while sophmore right side Julia Mackey was also an allleague performer. The Seawolves also did well in the major GNAC awards, earning the co-Coach of the Year (Chris Green), Newcomer of the Year (Quinn Barker)

Track and field distance runner Micah Chelimo has an array of awards and honors under his belt and is now adding a second MacKay Athlete of the Year award.

ANCHORAGE ­— Now a 12-time All-American and four-time national champion, senior Micah Chelimo became just the third student-athlete in 30 years to repeat as the University of Alaska Anchorage’s Bill MacKay Athlete of the Year when he received the award at Seawolves’ 30th annual endof-year banquet at Lucy Cuddy Hall last Friday night.

The Kapkoi, Kenya, native won the 3,000-meter race in a time of 8 minutes, 15.52 seconds at the 2014 NCAA Div. II Men’s Indoor Track and Field Championships last month in North Carolina, to go with a runnerup finish in the 5,000 meters (14:06.27). Those performances alone lifted the Seawolves to a ninth-place NCAA team finish and ran Chelimo’s total to four All-America honors in his two years of indoor eligibility.

Along with four awards each in cross-country and outdoor track and field, Chelimo has the most career All-America honors of any male athlete in Great Northwest Athletic Conference history, and the second-most in UAA history, trailing only swimmer Jon Pauole (14, 198992). He joins Tobias Schwoerer (men’s Nordic skiing/crosscountry running, 2002 and 2003) as the only back-to-back winner of the MacKay AOY honor, and gymnast Teri Frankie (1986 and 1990) as a two-time recipient.

In addition to his heroics at nationals, Chelimo was voted the GNAC’s Male Indoor Track and Field Athlete of the Year for

the second straight season. He scored 26 points at the GNAC Championships to secure a runner-up finish for the Seawolves, recording wins in the 5,000 and 3,000, plus a third-place finish in the one-mile race. Earlier in the year he also broke his own GNAC 5,000-meter record in 13:37.73.

The MacKay AOY award, sponsored by the Benton Bay Athletic Lions Club and UAA Athletics, is voted on by a committee of UAA Athletics staff, Benton Bay members and local media.

The Alaska Anchorage men’s and women’s cross-country teams concluded the 2013 season with their sixth straight combined appearance at the NCAAs in November. The women’s team came away with a program-best fourth-place result in their eighth all-time NCAA showing, while the men’s team took seventh in their 10th all-time participation.

Prior to the NCAA championship, the women’s team were undefeated, winning the NCAA Div. II West Region Championships and claiming their fifth straight Great Northwest Athletic Conference title, while taking first in three regular season meets.

The Seawolves also took the GNAC title on the men’s side, while winning all three regular season meets and finishing second at West Regional. The Seawolves were led individually by the West Region and the GNAC Runner of the Year, senior Susan Tanui, who defended her region title. Head coach Michael Friess also came away with West Region and GNAC Female Coach of the Year honors combined. UAA furnished five All-Americans, seven All-West Region performers and six GNAC All-Conference awards.

ANCHORAGE ­— Sophomore Stefany Bryan was named the Alaska Anchorage gymnastics team’s 2014 MVP on Thursday night as the Seawolves celebrated with their year-end banquet at Lone Star Steakhouse.

Bryan was an NCAA Div. I West Regional Championships allaround qualifier and earned AllMountain Pacific Sports Federation honors in the all-around and on uneven bars. The Seattle (Roosevelt High School/Seattle Gymnastics Academy) native competed all-around 10 times, averaging 37.548 and producing a career-high of 38.475 on Feb. 16. Bryan’s 9.584 bars average ranked 10th-best in program history. She also made the MPSF All-Academic Team with an overall grade-point average of 3.75.

Redshirt freshman Julia York took home the Most Improved Gymnast award, while junior Sariaye Jensen ­— who redshirted this year — and sophomore Simone Penker shared Most Inspirational Gymnast honors.

Awards were also given for the highest individual averages on each apparatus, with York taking the prize on vault (9.643), Bryan on bars, junior captain Morgan Cook on balance beam (9.609) and local freshman Kallie Randolphon floor exercise (9.682).

Keith Hackett speaks publicly for the first time as athletic director

Keith Hackett was officially introduced as the new athletic director at a press conference Friday afternoon. He used the event to share his vision for UAA athletics and to address some lingering questions. Hackett’s plan for the department is a threeheaded monster.

The first step is ensuring they are always in alignment with the educational mission of the university.

He wants to stress the “student” aspect of being a student-athlete.

Secondly, he is committed to the safety, health and wellbeing of the athletes. He vowed this will be the top priority when making decisions.

‘Wolves lose in overtime in WCHA semifinals

The University of Alaska Anchorage traveled to Grand Rapids, Mich., to play Ferris State University in the Western Collegiate Hockey Association semifinals. For just the fourth time in UAA history the Seawolves advanced to the WCHA semifinals and were on the losing end against the Bulldogs. FSU took an early two-goal lead with two unanswered goals in the first period.

The Seawolves scored a goal at 8:54 of the first period, when UAA junior Brett Cameron found the back of the net for a goal. The first period ended with UAA trailing FSU by a score of 2-1.

UAA senior Matt Bailey signs NHL contract

University of Alaska Anchorage senior hockey captain Matt Bailey signed a two-year contract with the National Hockey League’s Anaheim Ducks on March 25. Bailey left Anchorage last week to play for Anaheim’s American Hockey League team in Norfolk, Va. Goseawolves.com reported that Bailey is working with professors at UAA so that he can complete his bachelor’s degree in marketing and graduate this spring.

Bailey posted career highs of 20 goals and 38 points in the 2013-14 hockey season with the Seawolves. He also finished his collegiate career with a ranking of 23rd all-time on the UAA scoring list with a total of 94 points in 138 career games. A fond farewell ‘A New Hope’

Congratulations! Well done!

Whether this is your first year, your last or somewhere in between, you made it! The year is over and the long-awaited break has gloriously arrived at last.

I, like most other students, have sighed in relief and anxiously await whatever new adventures come with this summer.

It wasn’t an easy road to get here, but then again what part of college is easy?

Through my college career I have been fortunate enough to partake in an organization that has introduced me to so many wonderful people and opportunities. The Northern Light has helped me grow in so many ways and on so many levels in the 3 1/2 years I have worked there. I started out as web editor in fall 2010 and worked my way up to features editor, then took a quick break to try new things. I re-enlisted in spring 2013 as managing editor, and now finally made it to executive editor in summer 2013.

Through the ups, the downs, the laughter, the tears, the craziness, the pride, the stress, the deadlines and publishing the paper every week, we have persevered through it all.

The students who make this organization a reality are so dedicated and so hard working. I am proud to call them both my staff and my friends. Together we have done so much to bring UAA a weekly newspaper.

Through the hard work of the staff, we have made it to 25 years of publication. While TNL isn’t much older than a majority of the students attending UAA, it is a big accomplishment in our eyes.

We also just won six awards at the Alaska Press Club Conference, in which Alaska media, large and small, compete in different categories. We are looking forward to the results from the Associated Collegiate Press Contest, as well as a few other contests we entered this year.

But now it is time for me to move on as both editor and staff member of The Northern Light. It is an appropriate time

What an interesting year it’s been! It’s been stressful and crazy, wonderful and terrible all at the same time. But with all the different adjectives we could use to describe the year, we can all definitely say one thing: We are all glad it’s over!

The end of a school year is always bittersweet. While there are many nights of stress-eating and emotional outbursts over impending deadlines that you’d probably want to forget, there are also great memories made over the year that you wish weren’t coming to an end.

But the end of one year always gives me a sense of hope for the next. It’s a new start for everyone.

For me, the end of this semester marks the end of my first stint as the managing editor here at The Northern Light. It was a tough semester with a lot of hard work and tough deadlines. As sad as I am to see so many of our wonderful hardworking staff leave us this year as they graduate, the end of this year fills me with a sense of hope, both for them and for those of us left at the paper.

The upcoming 2014-15 school year brings with it promising prospects for the paper, and we at The Northern Light are very excited with what the new year entails. We hope to build our online presence and work on developing a bigger and better website. A big project we hope to work on this year is a smartphone app for student media that would provide students to direct access to both the student radio station, KRUA, as well as The Northern Light.

for transition and will allow the next generation to bring a fresh new outlook to the paper.

As my final farewell I hope to encourage others to experience what I have experienced. The Northern Light has opportunities for people of all different majors and skill sets. The same can be said about our sister media at KRUA, UAA’s radio station.

Whether it be as a volunteer, a staff member or an editor, I promise that you will get so much out of both organizations. The portfolio created, the experience earned, the connections made — ­ all of it helps any student with their future goals and aspirations.

It is the students who put their work into creating and publishing the paper. It is the students who keep the entire organization alive year after year. It is the students who leave with so much more than they came in with.

Thank you for your support and I hope that years from now I can thank the future students for their support in keeping The Northern Light going years from now.

LETTER TO THE EDITOR Dear Editor, The April 22, 2014, front page headline article “Where to get free food” did not state that during the approximately two weeks before the end of this semester the regular schedule for free food at the Daily Den is canceled. Free food is instead scheduled every weekday at the special time of 6-8 p.m. ­— or until the food runs out, for instance, about 7:30 p.m. Your article did have the regular times of the Daily Den free food correct: every weekday from 10-11 a.m. and 2-3 p.m.

Also, no mention was made about the important source of free food, the Dining Card, from the Student Health and Counseling Center located in Rasmuson Hall Room 116, which is good for eight all-you-can-eat meals per month from the cafeteria at the Gorsuch Commons. Otherwise, a fascinating article.

‘That is why you fail’

gchyde@thenorthernlight.org It is many arduous weeks into Luke’s training with Yoda on the swamp planet of Dagobah. As Luke continues his training, his concentration is lost when his X-Wing sinks deeper into the swamp.

Luke is distraught — he’ll never get off this planet now!

“So certain are you,” Yoda says. He tries to convince Luke that size matters not, and that retrieving the X-Wing, when using the Force properly, is a simple matter. But Luke remains unmoved. He accepts Yoda’s challenge, saying he’ll try.

You all know the quote that comes next: “Try not. Do, or do not. There is no try.”

It’s clear that Luke does not. The X-Wing sinks deeper, and Luke says that Yoda’s claims are impossible.

It’s then that Yoda effortlessly lifts the X-Wing out of the swamp and onto stable land. Luke’s mind is blown, and he tells Yoda, “I don’t believe it.” And Yoda turns back to him and replies, “That is why you fail.”

Yes, this Commencement issue carries a Star Wars theme with it, and while it makes for a nice way to celebrate May the 4th, there’s also a more important reason.

Yoda’s “Do or do not” line is quoted endlessly in yearbooks, graduation speeches and congratulatory cards around the world. But it’s not the quote that I immediately think of.

This is the most important moment in the entire Star Wars saga. It effortlessly explains what the Force is capable of, and how even a small green Muppet can channel that energy if he puts enough concentration into it. This scene worked better than any Midichlorian explanation ever could have.

But the most salient point of this scene is that we can do anything we can put our minds to. Everyone remembers “Do or do not,” but to me, there’s one quote in the scene that’s infinitely more important:

“That is why you fail.”

Luke couldn’t lift the X-Wing out of the swamp because he was skeptical.

He thought such a task to be impossible.

And when Yoda lifted it out, he couldn’t believe it. That was why he failed.

Perhaps it’s a bit cliché when you think about it, but the thing is, it rings true.

You enrolled in UAA because you had a dream you wanted to chase, the same as Luke wanting to learn the ways of the Force. You arrived at this place and immediately faced obstacles — the costs of textbooks, the snobby fraternities, the high grading standards, the monumental projects — it was completely foreign, just like the swamps of Dagobah were to Luke.

And finally, you eventually reached a breaking point. We’ve all had one ­— that one capstone project we couldn’t find the will to finish, the sheer mountain of homework we were sent to accomplish. It seemed impossible.

But all you need is to realize that anyone can do it if they concentrate and focus hard enough. It is possible to lift that X-Wing out of the swamp. It just takes training, and lots of it.

And now, you come at the tail end of your training. All that’s left to do is put it to use, and then your training will be complete. Just like how Luke only completed his training after overcoming his father.

This journey is not over, and it never will be. This is only the calm before the storm, the short break before the real-life equivalent of the Battle of Endor. But focus. Do. Or do not. There is no try. And if you believe your future to be impossible, so will it be. That is why you will fail.

And then, after you have proven yourself and become a true Jedi, your adventures will continue. Just like the upcoming Episode VII, your future is shrouded in mystery, but you must take it in stride.

Embrace it, maintain your focus and remember your training.

May the Force be with you, and may it be with us all.
