SFU expands water study in Peace ELAINE ANSELMI STAFF WRITER

Rural residents in the Peace River area are being asked to put their water to the test and allow researchers from Simon Fraser University (SFU) to dip into their wells and springs.

“It gives you that baseline that’s really necessary, especially when you have industry wanting to work on your land, or maybe even just seismic [vibrations] can sometimes disturb the water – sometimes for a short time, sometimes for an extended period,” said Peace River Regional District (PRRD) chair Karen Goodings. “It’s really important to have a baseline to ensure the quality, as well as the quantity.”

According to a 2013 BC Oil and Gas Commission report, approximately 11 per cent of the water used for hydraulic fracturing, or fracking, came from privately acquired or produced water.

The PRRD is on board with the pilot project, which has been facilitated by the provincial government and SFU, and is asking residents to volunteer their water sources for testing, as Goodings said it is an important issue for the region.

“Water comes up at every meeting we hold. If I go out into ... my area and I talk to people, one of their first concerns is water,” said Goodings.

She said that one of the key reasons for supporting this project is to see information on groundwater made public, and

shared between the various stakeholders shepherding that ever more precious resource.

“We see silos developing where information is being gathered, but not necessarily in a manner that you can share it. We think, the more often we can come together and share that information, the better off we’re going to be,” said Goodings.

“We set up our Water Stewardship Committee and hope to work with the province and the Oil and Gas Commission and everybody else to try and bring it together.”

The three-year-old study through SFU has already begun developing a picture of how water moves through the Peace River basin through well, spring and drilling observation well testing, as well as non-invasive geophysical surveys.

“They had intended to do wells and springs right from the get-go, but maybe haven’t had an opportunity to go onto individual land,” said Goodings. “If I had a well or spring,

I would invite them to come in and do the test – they would then be very confidential in that information, but would share back with me what they saw in the water.”

Researchers hope to expand this picture by studying the wells and springs in the Peace Region’s rural areas and municipalities.

“We’re just helping out where we can and getting the message out to people,” said Goodings, adding that they have already had several responses from landowners interested in taking part.

Losing Sucks

As we passed the halfway point of August, the harvest itch started to creep back with equipment (and mentalities) getting prepared to “push ‘er til she plugs”. Statistics Canada’s July production estimates peg the Canadian canola crop at 13.9 million tonnes, below pre-report expectations of 14.5 million. The government agency is also suggesting 27.7 million tonnes of total wheat output, including 4.95 million tonnes of durum (Sidenote: durum prices have been elevated lately because of quality concerns in Europe and northern U.S. states but are due for a pullback soon). Other oilseeds and pulse crops are seen having higher output than even last year’s big crop, including a new record of 5.9 million tonnes of soybeans, but this is more associated with increased acres (versus increased yields). These reports are always taken with a grain of salt though as surveys are compiled towards the end of July (and there’s still a few weeks left before it’s in the bin!). One of the arms of the U.S.D.A., the Farm Service Agency, released data as to what’s been enrolled in government subsidy programs this year, reporting 83.32 million acres of corn, 79.25 million acres of soybeans, and 52.57 million acres of wheat. These numbers are all below the U.S.D.A.’s official forecasts but the F.S.A.’s lost acres ( also known as “prevent plant”) also below that of the U.S.D.A.’s at 1.54 million for corn, 827,000 for soybeans, & 1.36 million of wheat.

Recent rains in eastern Australia will help maintain the size of the winter crop as the region was in need of a good drink, otherwise the 25 million-tonne wheat crop might’ve been scaled down. The big issue in the Land Down Undaa though remains in its transportation infrastructure, as like in Western Canada & northern US states, getting grain to export-ready positions is the biggest hurdle the industry faces. Aussie infrastructure consultants point to our “efficient” railroad and port system here in Canada (You could almost choke on the irony!).

The underlying problem will continue to be based around that various industries in resource-rich regions will continue to compete for rail space unless new infrastructure/track is added.

The cost of just being a farmer in Russia is increasing as western economic sanctions are making it difficult to obtain new financing & pay off current debt. Farmers in southern Russia “rushed to sell grain” this harvest as interest rates have risen since the beginning of the year. With a potential 60 million-tonne wheat crop coming off in the Black Sea country, it’s expected that producers will keep selling, in turn pushing down prices, as there’s a lot of grain so it’s not very smart to try to hold on for better prices, especially when loan payments are due. With Russia instituting a food import ban on western countries, it’ll turn to some of its old comrades, such as Kazakhstan, to help supply beef and other fodder crops that Russia is not self-sufficient in (unlike wheat, of which it has a lot). Although reports are growing that disease in wheat are leading to losses are front & center in a few major growing regions in North America (i.e. northern U.S. states and Western Canada). Russia definitely has the ability to move the wheat complex and with seemingly bigger numbers coming out of the Black Sea every day, harvest selling pressure is likely here for the next couple months.

Prince George couple leading agricultural innovation ARTHUR WILLIAMS STAFF WRITER - PRINCE GEORGE CITIZEN

While the B.C. Northern Exhibition celebrated the history of agriculture in the region, one Prince George couple is working on the cutting edge of food production.

Matthias and Jutta Zapletal of Northern Bioponics Ltd. operate a greenhouse on their rural property on Chief Lake Road.

They grow and sell produce including basil, mustard greens, lettuce varieties, mint, strawberries and tropical tilapia freshwater fish.

The innovative system uses the principle of aquaponics: a combination of aquaculture, raising fish for food in enclosed tanks, and hydroponics - growing plants without soil by using nutrient-rich water.

"I built everything myself. You can pay people to do it... but it is very expensive," Matthias said. "After working 25 years as an engineer... I said it's time now to do something I really like. I grew up on a small farm.

I always had a garden. You don't make a lot of money [as a farmer], but you always have enough to eat." Matthias and Jutta, who is trained as an optics technician, immigrated from Germany to Canada in 1999. After several years of trying to have his German training recognized in Canada, he found himself living in Alberta and commuting to Florida to work.

"I worked for many years down in Florida.

It became too much," he said.

The couple moved to Prince George and launched Northern Bioponics in August 2010, and sold their first harvest of basil in July 2011.

"It takes around three months before you get [nutrient] balance," Matthias said. "The first plants we grew, without enough nutrients, came up white." Now their products are available at the Prince George Farmers' Market, Home Sweet Home grocery and Ave Maria Gifts and Health Foods. In addition, the sell their produce to a number of local restaurants.

"I believe aquaponics won't solve the world hunger problem, but it is another opportunity to grow year round," Matthias said.

HOW IT WORKS The tilapia are raised in a series of tanks -segrated by age and development. Currently the Zapletals have about 2,000 fish, although they typically only sell 250300 per year.

"I feed the fish, the water is drained and the [waste] solids go into a bioreactor," Matthias said.

The bioreactor uses bacteria and oxygen to break down the waste into nitrates -an important nutrient used by plants, he said.

"The plants work like a big filter. They take out everything, and the water goes back to the fish," he said. "It's completely closed." The tropical tilapia, which thrive in water ranging from 22 to 24 C, allows Northern Bioponics to grow a wide range of produce, Matthias said. Some aquaponics systems have been created using trout, but the cold water required for the fish limits what types of plants can be grown.

Female tilapia also collect and incubate their fertilized eggs in their mouth until they hatch, Matthias said, which makes for simple and hands-off breeding.

The plant seeds are placed in reusable pots filled with

baked clay pellets, and the pots are placed in floating trays or pipes that allows the water to be cycled through and absorbed by the plants.

The pellets and pots are all sterilized and reused. Everything that can be reused or recycled is, he said. They feed waste stems and leaves to their chickens.

Other than the food for the fish and about 1,000 litres of water a month to replace evaporation, the system requires few inputs, he said. It takes about 1.5 pounds of fish feed to create one pound of tilapia -highly-efficient compared to other protein sources like cows, pigs and chickens, he said.

"I can not spray anything, not even organic certified [pesticides], because they are toxic to invertebrates like the fish," Matthias said. "I have never had any disease in here [among the fish.]" Pest control is done manually and with natural predators like ladybugs, which eat aphids.

Despite the high-tech nature of the system, it requires very little power to run, Matthias said.

"May to October, the greenhouse and 36,000 litres of water are heated only by solar.

One big truckload of wood chips heats [the greenhouse] for the whole winter," Matthias said. "With a two-three kilowatt solar panel for power, I'd be completely off the grid." A row of mirrors reflects sunlight into the greenhouse to extend the amount of available daylight during the short winter days.

Matthias said they hope to add some artificial grow lamps this year to improve their winter growing time.

Even still, he said, the growing time for vegetables in the greenhouse is approximately half that needed to grow plants in Prince George's cool, short growing season.

The greenhouse system allows Northern Bioponics to stage their plants so they can harvest on a continual basis.

Producers battle bugs in crops RICHARD KAMCHEN FCC EXPRESS

Insects in Manitoba and Alberta are thriving in the recent hot, dry conditions.

Manitoba’s grasshopper population is up slightly from last year, according to provincial entomologist John Gavloski.

“We’re certainly not into what we’d call an outbreak, but there are areas that have some high levels,” he says.

With greater numbers of grasshoppers come more of their natural enemies, Gavloski notes. One is the red mite, a blood-feeding parasite which also preys on grasshopper eggs. The mites will impact the population, but the significance is hard to quantify. Gavloski doesn’t think they would singlehandedly be responsible for a population collapse.

A significant decline needs numerous enemies -- fungal diseases, predators -- including birds and even some other insects -- a weather event or a combination thereof, Gavloski says.

Like grasshoppers, lygus bugs thrive in the heat and their numbers this year are similar to last year’s.

“They’re something farmers should be checking for, especially in sunflowers or canola. But in most fields, they’re actually below economic threshold or borderline,” Gavloski says. “There aren’t any extremely high levels.”

Alberta weather has also been nearly perfect for lygus bugs, says Alberta insect management specialist Scott Meers.

“We’re seeing fields that have quite high numbers of lygus bugs and there are fields being treated,” Meers says.

“Lygus bugs do really, really well in hot, dry conditions, and they’ve been doing really well in big parts of Alberta in the last few weeks.”

la is particularly vulnerable to lygus bugs, which will feed on developing seeds, shrivelling them.

Canola plants can normally compensate for the damage, though.

While Bertha armyworms in Alberta seem to be at surprisingly low levels, diamondback moths are in greater numbers than normal.

Around southeast Alberta, Meers saw fields with diamondback moth numbers high enough

-- 200 to 300 per square metre -- to require treatment.

“We don’t often get into the spray territory with diamondback. It happens now and then,” says Meers. “In the last few years, natural enemies and diseases have always taken them out before they got to be too big a problem, but it looks like they’re coming through this year and the numbers are building as we head toward harvest.”

Wild and Lawless Horse Sho In the sixth year of the show it was the first time they have held the cowboy challenge and with 16 riders and plenty of money available for the competitors, the event will be back again in 2015.

“It was great, this place was packed. We had a Calcutta we sold teams. We had eight teams I think the highest selling team was 700 or 800 hundred dollars,” she said. “It was the first time ever we had tried it and it was huge success so now we are going to elaborate on that and maybe build more of that up at our next show.”

The cowboy challenge is glorified trail horse class, where riders compete to register the fastest time while maneuvering around a number of man made obstacles.

When the show started six years ago Lewis explained many horse enthusiasts were looking for a show in the area and with nothing available close by, the PCHRA decided to put one on.

“There are open shows every year, the North Pine Fall fair has an open show and the Dawson Creek fall fair has an open show, but other than that there was no where to go to show a horse,” Lewis said. “There were only those two events in the fall and that was it. So we decided to throw a horse show and it took off on us. The first one was pretty small and we’ve just built and built since.”

The numbers dropped for the 2014 show, but that was due to the decision to focus solely on western riding, and cutting out the English style and jumping events from the weekend. The change allowed the event to take place over just three days as opposed to the four or more in previous incarnations.

“We decided to go with just the western this year and it seems to be well received and well attended,” Lewis explained. “We only have western this time around, we discontinued the jumping and the English, we probably lost maybe 50 horses because of that.

Every year it fluctuates up and down but pretty good turnout this year.”

ow draws sold out crowd boy Challenge that took place on Saturday night, the show featured a full day of more specific reining classes on Saturday, followed by trail, showmanship and western pleasure classes on Sunday.

Nathalie Randall from Peace River and competed in both the freestyle reining as well as the showmanship class, has been to the show for the last several years and explained she liked the variety of the show in Dawson Creek.

“There’s a variety of things here so you don’t really get bored because there is pleasure and showmanship, there’s a bit of everything, so you can have lots of variety,” she said. “I come back because it’s fun and there are a lot of money prizes.”

Telitha Nielsen who competed in the freestyle reining, Cowboy Challenge and the showmanship/ western classes on Sunday reiterated Randall’s feelings. “it was a lot of fun,” she said. “I like that I know everybody.

It’s nice to know people I don’t like when I go to Red Deer and I don’t know anybody. Everybody knows each other and everyone is cheering each other on.”

Nielsen who competed in her first cowboy challenge in Prince George a few weeks ago, said it went much better this time around, but still left her well back of top spot.

“This one went way better,” she said. “Last time my horse and I were nervous and I wasn’t really breathing. This time was a little more smooth.”

Nelsen did however capture top spot in freestyle reining on Friday night.

Howard Thiessen from Prince George eventually won the inaugural Cowboy Challenge and Josh Classen from Tower Lake finished a close second. Thiessen partnered up with his son Clay to win the team event.

For Lewis, there is no doubt that there will be a seventh annual Wild and Lawless show and she looks forward to seeing how Dawson Creek supports the show once again.

“It’s a huge event and we have plenty of sponsors that support us, most from Fort St. John and a few from Dawson Creek. This is our sixth annual and next year we will build up on that cowboy challenge because that is going to be the thing of the future, everybody is pretty keen on that,” she said.

Canada’s organic sector is getting an $8-million influx of cash.

The funds, delivered through the industry-led Research and Development stream of Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada’s AgriInnovation Program, will be used by the Organic Federation of Canada to lead an organic science cluster aimed at helping the sector respond to market demands and capture new opportunities.

In a news release, the federal government states the cluster brings together academia, government and industry to focus on cutting-edge research and development. They will work to improve the organic sector’s competitiveness, market potential, adaptability and sustainability of hops, sprouts, ornamental potted plants and poultry.

The release says the priorities of the 200 collaborating sci-

entists include: - crop breeding for improved cultivars - developing new reduced-tillage systems for organic crops - enhancing soil to improve plant health - developing new approaches to manage crop pests, diseases and livestock parasites Ted Zettel, president of the Organic Federation of Canada, says the project will advance the understanding and methodology of organic farming and provide information to be shared with farmers.

“This project involves researchers across the country working together to provide us with the tools needed to expand production to meet the ever-growing consumer demand for organic food,” Zettel says.

The federal government states Canada’s organic exports are valued at $458 million, with most going to the United States and the European Union.

Niche market development for Canadian horticultural crops -– and opportunities for farmers -- has taken another step forward.

Earlier this week, scientists at the Vineland Research and Innovation Centre received more than $2.5 million in federal support to address changing markets and develop new ones.

The support underscores Canada’s diversity in horticulture and nursery plants. Commodities receiving support are sweet potatoes, roses and so-called “world crops” such as okra.

“This support will enhance our hardy Canadian rose, sweet potato and world crop programs, and give farmers new opportunities and markets,” says Jim Brandle, CEO of the centre. “It will drive results for the industry through research and commercialization.”

Included in the announcement was $1.4 million to modernize the centre’s rose breeding program with DNA fingerprinting

technology, to develop cold hardy, black spot-resistant rose varieties. These new varieties will prevent potential losses due to cold and diseases, giving Canadian growers a competitive edge.

As well, researchers will receive over $1.1 million to help producers tap into the growing market for world crops. Earlier studies at the University of Guelph pegged the value of this market at $60-million a month, in the Greater Toronto area alone.

But field and greenhouse production knowledge has yet to catch up to product demand for commodities such as oriental long eggplants and okra.

Researchers will also be working to adapt sweet potato varieties to Canadian conditions. Centre sources say with an evolving consumer base in Canada and the U.S., this project will boost domestic production of exotic vegetables, leading to new opportunities for the horticultural sector.

The Vineland centre is a not-for-profit organization in Ontario’s Niagara Region, created to advance horticultural research and innovation of healthy foods in an environmentally sustainable way.

Winnipeg canola futures have steadily worked lower this summer after breaking below their range-bound conditions of late winter and early spring.

The latest pressure point for the canola market was earlier this week before and after the United States Department of Agriculture released its crop production and supply-demand report on Tuesday, Aug. 12.

The report confirmed trade ideas of the largest American soybean crop in history on the way this fall. The 2014 U.S. soybean crop is pegged at a record 3.82 billion bushels. While the report was relatively in line with trade guesses, the official numbers were still enough to weigh on oilseed values on both sides of the border.

And as it stands at the time of writing on Aug. 13, November canola futures are trading down below $440 a tonne and just above important chart support near contract low territory at $430 a tonne.

Continued uncertainty over the size of the Canadian canola crop, with many areas now thought to be in need of some moisture, has maintained underlying price support at this level so far.

Canola crop estimates seem to range in the 14.5 to 15 million tonne area, which would leave immediate canola supplies looking fairly comfortable when the harvest eventually hits the street -- and that might result in some loss in relative price strength at times.

In time though, I suspect underlying demand is going to aggressively chew through new crop supplies, a factor that likely will not be immediately apparent to the market, but will become more evident into the second half of the marketing year.

Canola remains a range-bound market for as far out as I can see, just testing the lower end of that range right now.

Current market sentiment, not just for canola but for all grain markets, is heavily focused on supply issues (production), which indeed is typical for this time of year. And yes, crops are looking big globally. But that is only half the equation.

Demand remains very strong globally as well, and only gets stronger during a period of lower prices. I think we might be surprised later in the marketing year how quickly we find our industry chewing through supply.

Now again, I do not believe we’re about to enter a sustained bull section of the longer term pricing cycle.

I reiterate PFCanada’s 2-2-2 philosophy related here in previous reports earlier in the year: two-year up, twoyear down, two-year sideways.

I think we are into the third stage of the 2-2-2 cycle -- the sideways portion -- which, without a big crop threat, could go on for another year. Who knows? But I think the current market is testing the lower ends of the sideways ranges on various crops, including canola. We probably have yet to see harvest-type lows, but on basis and futures, we’ll likely see some better net cash pricing opportunities, relative to now, in the year ahead.

If our interpretation that an emerging broad trend of sideways price action is correct, PFCanada views $9 a bushel territory at the elevator as being too cheap and $11 a bushel as being too expensive.

There is a pretty heavy forward book for canola in the commercial system amid reluctance of farmers to sell sub-$10 a bushel at this time. Given the demand needs projected next year, I see 2014-15 Canadian canola carryout dropping to 1.2 million tonnes -- maybe less.

Something usually comes along to either create a cash reload incentive or a two-month window where speculators flip from majorly short-positioned in the futures to a net long.

First, though, we must get through the large soybean crop situation weighing on market sentiment in the here and now, in which -- if August weather remains benign -- all oilseed prices could yet suffer some more in the near-term.

Submitted by the Peace River Lamb Association Saturday, June 7th and Sunday, June 8th proved to be a very informative two days for Peace Country sheep and goat producers. This was the weekend of the 2nd annual Peace Country Sheep Conference was held in Rycroft, Alberta.

The conference was put on by the Peace River Lamb Association and partially funded by the Alberta Livestock and Meat Agency (ALMA).

Gordon Schroeder, sheep specialist with the Saskatchewan Sheep Development Board, started out our weekend with some interesting and common sense techniques on sheep and goat behavior followed by a short description of the Canadian Marketing Co-op system.

After lunch, Susan Hosford brought forward the fact that the sheep population in Alberta has dropped considerably over the years. She spoke on different electronic systems, the RFID tagging system, flock production management and financial software.

Ken Jones from Fairview spoke about predators in the Peace, specifically coyotes and bears, but also mentioned cougars, wolves, ravens and eagles.

A delicious lamb supper was enjoyed by all that attended the conference Saturday evening.

Sunday morning, Virginia Glover, our Zone 7 representative for Alberta Lamb Producers (ALP), introduced Margaret Cook from the ALP. Margaret spoke about programs that are available for producers through “Growing Forward 2”, as well as connections and resources that are available to Alberta producers.

Dr. Kathy Parker finished our conference speaking on various diseases associated with sheep and goats. Dr. Parker, once again this year, spoke to us imparting a wealth of information on various topics such as managing flock fertility, caseous lymphadenitis, coccidiosis and barberworm. She then answered questions put forward by conference attendees.

It is the hope of the conference committee that we will be able to plan a 3rd annual Peace Country Sheep Conference for 2015.

The organizing committee would like to thank our many sponsors, the producers that attended and all the knowledgeable speakers for making the second annual sheep conference a huge success.

SMELLY BREATH, YELLOW TEETH, and OTHER DENTAL CLUES Article submitted

by Dr. Gudrun Gunther How often do you brush and floss your teeth?

Now think about how often your pet brushes and flosses. Never. Some lucky dogs and cats have owners that brush their teeth for them. No wonder most pets have dental disease. Let’s go through some of the signs of poor oral health and what those signs mean.

Stinky breath: Sometimes you can smell this from the other side of the room and sometimes it really only hits you when Fluffy is trying to give you a kiss.

What does it mean? It means that something is rotting in the mouth – and that is never a good thing. Usually the culprit is pockets of bacteria and rotten food hiding in and around tartar and around the gum line. It can also come from rotten teeth and abscesses that are sitting around the roots of the teeth.

The smell means that there is a constant infection (Yuck!). Let me list the ways this is bad: 1. The mouth can act as a source of blood borne infection to the rest of the body – particularly targeting kidneys and heart valves.

2. Having an infection around the teeth is like having a constant open sore on the body – the body’s immune system wastes time and effort on the open sore – and makes it harder to fight other illnesses.

3. Infection leads to inflammation which means pain. These mouths are sore all the time!

Yellow teeth (or even worse the green or brown chunks of tartar): The reason we brush and floss our teeth at least twice every day is that brushing and flossing remove plaque. Once plaque hardens into tartar, brushing can no longer remove it. It takes 12 hours for plaque to harden into tartar.

Tartar is a hard substance that will not go away with tooth brushing. It sits on the tooth irritating the gums and making a nice cozy home for stinky food particles and bad bacteria.

Once you see tartar it is time for a professional cleaning, because the teeth need to be scaled and then polished to remove the tartar.

Broken teeth: All teeth are covered with a super strong, water and bacteria proof covering called enamel. Under the enamel is the softer material called dentin. Both the enamel and the dentin are protecting the pulp which contains the nerves and blood supply to the tooth. Sometimes when the tooth is broken, the pulp is exposed to the outside world. This is very painful! Other times the enamel is broken off and bacteria soak into the dentin and infect the pulp.

Again, this is painful. Both cases lead to infection traveling down the tooth and into the bone around the tooth roots.

Periodontal disease: The periodontal ligament is what keeps teeth from falling out. It glues the teeth into their sockets. When dogs and cats have periodon-

So how do we know that they are painful? We compare how they act and feel AFTER the dental and quite often there is an obvious difference.

So your pet has dental disease. What should you do?

The first step is to book an examination with your veterinarian. He or she will look at the mouth and give you recommendations and an estimate. Most likely a professional dental cleaning will be recommended.

Professional Dental Cleaning: Any time tartar is scraped off, the tooth needs to be polished or the scratch marks will act as a scaffold for more tartar buildup. Secondly, we also need to clean just under the gum line because this is where the real health problems lie. And while you may be happy at the dentist – it is much too stressful for your dog or cat to undergo a dental cleaning while awake.

So, the bottom line is: Make an appointment with your veterinarian. Your veterinarian will tell you what the best plan is. Then, after the mouth is healthy, you may want to consider brushing your pet’s teeth – just like you do your own! This disease starts when tartar irritates the gums.

Gradually the gums start to recede and the infection begins to chew on the ligament (which lead to loose teeth) and work its way down the root. Eventually this infection can cause small abscesses in the bone, or in some cases bigger abscess that can cause facial swelling and pain.

The feline oral resorptive lesion (aka FORL): The cat cavity. Yes! Even cats can have dental disease!!

They can have all the previously listed problems and can also have their own, cat specific issues. These are cavities that occur in the teeth of cats. Unfortunately, we do know that they are very painful. The only cure is removal of all affected teeth.

PAIN: Usually owners do NOT notice tooth or mouth pain in our pets (unless it is severe).

Unfortunately, our pets show extremely subtle signs of mouth pain. Some appear to be more tired, or act older; others are grumpier and want to play less.

For 67 years, people have crowded the fairgrounds north of Fort St. John to celebrate rural life on one weekend in the fall, and this year was no different.

The sunbaked fairgrounds saw horse shows, beef shows, stock dogs herding sheep, tractors competing for the farthest pull, live entertainment and kids and adults alike indulging in the kind of treats they can only find at the Fall Fair.

It was a hot, dry weekend typical of this year’s summer. Good for not getting rained out, but not so good for some of the seniors, said fair secretary-

treasurer Eleanor Steffensen.

“Because it is so hot, so many of the seniors don’t want to get into the heat, because then they’re going to get sick,” she said, adding that the Fall Fair is the one time of the year that many of them see each other.

Steffensen had a difficult time pinpointing a favorite part to the fair, partially because she’s usually too busy to take all of it in.

“There are so many different aspects to this fair now, like the tractor pull, the horses and the sheep with the stock dogs,” she said. “Every year, I say I’m going to go watch the stock dogs, but I’ve never been there yet.”

She’s been involved in the Fall Fair for 20 years, and said that one of the highlights is

Fun On The Farm awarding the pioneer of the year. That is typically given to four members of the North Peace agriculture community, involved in the fair and over the age of 70.

As the award is usually a surprise, Steffensen said, seeing the looks on the winners’ faces is very rewarding.

Between 5,000 and 6,000 people typically come out to the fair every year. To accommodate that many visitors, the fair needs volunteers to operate, Steffensen said.

“We need volunteers. That would be one of the biggest things, if you’re going to write anything, write that in big letters, because we really need volunteers, there just is nobody,” she said.

If anyone is interested in volunteering for next year’s fair, the planning starts next month, and the annual general meeting is in November. peacereporter@ahnfsj.ca

number of beef cows on Canadian farms fell 1.0% from July 1, 2013, to 3.92 million head. The number of beef heifers held for breeding was down 3.5% year over year to 616,200 head. Canadian farmers had 1.4 million dairy cows and heifers on their farms, down 0.5% from July 1, 2013.

As of July 1, 81,975 farms reported cattle and calves, down 1.6% from July 1, 2013 and 2.9% less than the same date in 2012.

Total disposition of cattle increased as both slaughter and exports rose during the first half of 2014 compared with the same period in 2013. Strong prices offered incentive for farmers to move their cattle.

Slaughter increased 3.1% compared with the first six months of 2013 to 1.56 million head, while exports were up 6.0% to 601,800 head.

As of July 1, there were 7,035 hog farms in Canada, down 0.9% from the same date a year earlier.

These farms reported 1.2 million sows and gilts, up 0.7% from July 1, 2013.

CCA applauds announcement of complete CETA text CANADIAN CATTLEMEN’S ASSOCTIAITON AUGUST 16, 2014

Calgary-AB - The Canadian Cattlemen’s Association (CCA) applauds today’s announcement that Canada and the European Union (EU) have reached a complete text for a free trade agreement. Today’s progress follows the historic agreement-in-principle for a Canada-EU Comprehensive Economic and Trade Agreement (CETA) reached last October and means the complete text can now be translated and be given a final legal review.

CCA President Dave Solverson called the progress on CETA outstanding and thanked Prime Minister Stephen Harper and International Trade Minister Ed Fast for their demonstrated commitment to move the agreement forward. Also announced today - Canada will host a Canada-EU summit in September and Prime Minister Harper and Minister Fast will lead a trade mission to the United Kingdom in early September to promote the competitive advantages the CETA will create.

The CETA provides new duty-free access for 64,950 tonnes of Canadian beef valued at nearly $600 million, with the lion’s share of the quota reserved for Canada alone.

“The CCA would like to see the same unanimous endorsement from all the provinces and territories that the agreement-in-principle received last fall,” Solverson said. “The CCA urges the Federal and Provincial governments to move quickly to implement the agreement as soon as possible.”

The agreement has been hailed as a game changer for Canada’s beef industry, as the removal of longstanding barriers in this agreement, such as high tariffs, enables Canadian beef producers to benefit from the high value that the European beef market represents.

The CCA has been working on the CETA from the outset of negotiations in 2009, engaging with the Canadian negotiating team and conducting advocacy with key EU and Member State officials and industry representatives. CCA representatives attended numerous negotiating rounds in Brussels and Ottawa and met

regularly with the Canadian negotiators of CETA to ensure they clearly understood the needs of Canada’s beef sector.

For the Canadian beef sector, CETA will produce duty free access for 64,950 tonnes. Of this, 50,000 tonnes, consisting of 35,000 tonnes of fresh/chilled beef and 15,000 tonnes of frozen beef, are reserved for Canada. In addition, Canada will see the 20 per cent duty on the existing 14,950 tonne Hilton quota shared with the U.S. reduced immediately to zero. Canada will also continue to have access to the existing shared duty free quota for high quality grain-fed beef. Combined with the new access, there is a potential to reach more than 100,000 tonnes per year of duty free access for Canadian beef. Additionally, all live cattle, genetics and most beef offals and processed beef products will benefit from immediate unlimited duty free access.

Alberta cattleman rides ou

Neither drought nor cattle disease, or even a tragic accident could force this family off the farm an NEW HOLLAND NEWS SUMMER 2014

The devil paid a visit to ARDA Farms in 2002: they called it the worst drought in 140 years. But an Olds, Alberta cattleman named Jay Davis fought back. He sent some of his cattle to Manitoba for pasture, hauled in water for those remaining, culled his herd, borrowed money, hunkered down, and kept going. He and his family made it through.

But the devil came back the next year even stronger with mad cow disease (BSE - bovine spongiform encephalopathy), a cow sickness so bad the U. S. closed its border to Canadian cattle and beef imports, sending Canadian cattle prices to historic lows.

Again, Jay Davis, like so many other Alberta cattlemen, fought back, took his licks, and refused to give up.

That storm also passed, the rains returned, and the cattle started a slow journey back to market norms.

Then the devil singled out Jay Davis and his family for one more horrific blow.

While driving on a foggy night their 17-year-old son Cody missed a curve in the road and in an instant traded his truck for a wheelchair. The accident had broken his back, and he was told he would never walk again.

Working through tragedy Cody and his brother and sister had always been very tight, and the accident made their bond even stronger.

But like his father, he fought back with every fiber remaining in his injured body, and with the support of his never-give-up family he turned the difficult physical therapy into an athletic challenge, eventually tossing the wheelchair aside and going to college.

Today at age 22, Cody walks with crutches, has a degree in Marketing from Olds College, and is a farm equipment salesman for the New Holland dealer in Olds. At times even those crutches must think they’re almost out of work when Cody climbs into the cab of a piece of equipment to demonstrate it to a customer.

And while no one actually talks about Cody one day walking free of the crutches, you just have to believe that in the back of their minds everyone who knows him is praying for that miracle, too.

The Davis family, in addition to Cody, includes his sister Scarlett, 20, who is pursuing a nursing career at Lethbridge Community College, 24-yearold twin brothers Garrett and Jarrett, who farm with their parents and have their own herd of Angus cattle, and their beloved mother Lenore.

“Lenore is my rock,” Jay says of his

wife. “I married her at 33. She is a stayat-home farm wife, cook, and mother and a big part of all our lives. What more can one say?”

Joby Bishop is the seventh member of the Davis family. The son of a friend who died with cancer, he was taken into the family at age 16, knowing his father would have done the same for them if they had encountered a similar situation. He now lives with Garrett, has career as a welder, and is considered one of the family.

Angus forever A well-known purebred Angus herd is at the heart of ARDA Farms with 400 Angus cows and another 400 commercial pairs. Over winter the Davis family buys another 1,000 commercial black and black and white face heifers which are backgrounded in the family feedlot.

The top half of the commercial heifers are sold in the farm’s well-known annual sale along with ARDA’s much sought after Angus bulls. The bottom cut of the heifers along with purebred bulls that don’t make the sale are taken to pasture and sold at local auction markets or on satellite/video sales when they weight 800 to 900 pounds.

Hundreds of buyers from across Canada have been attending the ARDA Farms annual Angus bull sale held every March for 17 years. Last year (2013) Davis sold 66 yearling bulls

while Garrett and Jarrett sold 34 twoyear-old Angus bulls from their own herd.

Also sold were 400 head of Black and Black Baldie commercial replacement heifers. ARDA Farms genetics have sold around the globe, some going as far as Mexico, Russia, Kazakhstan, and Japan.

Davis combines 2,500 acres of land - barley, wheat, oats, and canola - and swath grazes another 300 acres. In this region they take one cutting hay which is put up in round bales.

More than a century Jay’s grandfather, James Davis, came to Alberta in 1903 with his family of 13 to farm north of Calgary. In 1942 his son A.R. Davis, Jay’s father, established a purebred Angus herd, and that tradition has endured in the family to this day. The farm is named after him.

“My father was a pillar in the community,” Jay says with great admiration for his Dad. “He was on ag boards, a church member, and a school trustee.

He was a community-minded man. My brother and I bough my father out and I took the ARDA purebred herd and my brother took the commercial herd. We ended up sharing the farm machinery between our two operations. It helped us get ahead. We split up about 20 years ago and things just grew from there.”

Report Looks at Potential Future of Grain Corn in the Province Alberta Agriculture and Rural Development will soon be releasing a report of the potential of grain corn in the province.

“Traditionally, we haven’t see corn grown here in Alberta as we haven’t got enough heat,” says Mandy Gabruch, Alberta Agriculture and Rural Development, Brooks, and author of the report. “However, in the last 10-15 years, several new varieties have been developed that require fewer heat units.”

The new report examines some of the issues around growing corn in the province. These include agronomics, places that have enough heat and water for corn, and economic aspects such as costs and returns of corn as compared to other crops.

“We’re also looking at how the growth of corn in Alberta is going to affect the

feed industry,” says Gabruch. “We’re looking at the potential of corn as an alternative feed source.

“In 2014, grain corn area in Alberta increased by 60 per cent from the previous year to 40,000 acres. Further increases are expected in the next decade, with agricultural technology companies investing in new varieties that they feel will spur adoption of grain corn on the prairies.”

As to the kind of bulls he is striving for, he says, “I try to keep my purebred program somewhere in the middle. I like decent size cattle and believe that good EPDs (genetic profiles) are indicative of good performing cattle. I recall the extremes we’ve seen in cattle over the decades from smaller framed cattle in the 1950s to oversized cattle in the 1980s. I like to keep moderation in mind, but I want performance and eye appeal along with longevity. At heart, I’m a commercial cattleman, so it’s that perspective that helps me make

my purebred herd decisions.

“Angus cows have come to the front of the line over the past 20 years,” he said. Yet his father believed in them as early as 1942. “They are a complete cow with maternal performance, marbled carcasses, docility, milk, and longevity. They are a complete yet moderate framed cow. For the most part they are just easy-keeping cattle. They are the allaround breed.

“I believe in the genetics we’ve gathered in our herd,” Davis continued. “We chose Black Angus because they fit. They worked for the commercial cattle industry. So we’re not here by accident, but by design and

choice. And as for me, I don’t think I want to retire. Looking back at the past decade, we’ve come through a lot as an industry and as independent farmers.

Help from oil and gas “Gas and oil surface revenues started about 15 years ago. They bring vital revenues to the community and the farms and ranches, revenue which is pumped back into machinery and trucks,” Davis said.

“That cash at times was like it was being poured into a black hole. There were a lot of needs to be met and it sure helped. The land would certainly look different today without all the access roads and pump jacks and oil installations, but where would we be in tough years without that cash?

“I’m quite thankful it came when it did. Without the cash flow we would have had a tougher time. Somehow, things work out if you are patient and work through those moments and are conservative in your management in the good years.

When Davis refers to the good things in life he means family, community, friends, and being diversified.

“Our survival hinged on our ability to be creative and diversified. My sons are the fourth generation on this farm,

“It wasn’t always like this,” Davis says. “Coming through the drought of ‘02 and then those desperate BSE years when cattle weren’t worth much has taught us to be careful and conservative in the good years knowing things can turn on a dime into another tough, desperate year.

“We were all affected when Cody rolled the crew cab that night and broke his back,” the father said. “But the tragedy brought the family closer together. We have had our share of struggles. But we were never alone: our community and the rest of Canada were in the same plight. We were just one farm family among thousands that was devastated. We went into debt, hunkered down and knew we’d come out the other side of the storm.

And we did.

“We’re still paying down the bills from the drought of ‘02 and the BSE years. They were hard years, but we got lean and toughed it out,” Davis said.

“I’ve been holding onto the cow’s tail all my life, and she’s always pulled us through.”

Grande Prairie native drives home a winner with 4th Battle of the North title

In the 92nd edition of the Dawson Creek Exhibition and Stampede, Kirk Sutherland showed the sold-out grandstand crowd he knows a little something about winning. The now four-time Battle of the North champion took the lead early and never looked back on his way to claiming a new GMC truck and $15,000 cheque in the Joe Loomis Trucking Dash for Cash in the second-last leg of the World Professional Chuckwagon Association (WPCA) tour season.

Sutherland said he was glad to bring his “A” game to Dawson Creek and take home the top prize.

“It feels good,” the 30- year chuckwagon veteran said following his win on Sunday evening. “The team worked good, the outrid- ers were right there. Everything just fell into place and worked out well.”

At the stampede last year Sutherland was in the hunt for his fourth dash for cash title but came up short after an unfortunate mishap. “Last year I lost it on the final day here, they missed my stove. So I got the same outfit that I’ve had the last three years, so that’s good.

It’s good recognition for the horses,” he said.

Sutherland had the top aggregate time this year over the course of the four-day competition with a time of 5:09.85. He had the lead from the first day of chuckwagon action on Wednesday and said that momentum helped carry him into the final race on Sunday.

“It definitely helps any- time you get that ... it was good,” he said.

It had been eight years since Sutherland last claimed the big prize in the Battle of the North and Dawson Creek Exhibition President Connie Patterson was happy to see him take the crown again.

“Kirk hasn’t won the Dash for Cash here in a while so it was his turn to win. He’s had an excellent year and it was good for him. It was his turn finally,” she said.

Sutherland also holds the all-time record at the Dawson Creek stampede with a time of 1:13.56 in 2013. He was just one sec- ond off that record-setting time in the second last leg of the WPCA tour with one of the fastest times of the weekend in a penalty free time of 1:14.57.

The Grand Prairie na- tive was able to beat Roger Moore by just under a sec- ond in the last heat of the

evening.

With the win he has also extended his world points standing lead over Jason Glass. Sutherland explained that the win this weekend is helpful going into the final race of the season in Rocky Mountain House, Alberta.

“I gained some well needed points on Jason and it’ll be a dog fight till the end, but it will be good,” he said.

Sutherland, who has been coming to the Daw- son Creek Exhibition and Stampede since he won the dash here in 1976, said he was once again impressed with show and the sold out crowds.

“They have done an awe- some job,” he said. “They have made so many leaps and bounds over the years it’s hard to believe. The grandstand is still full, so that’s good. They’ve got the grandstand, the infield and the track now, so it’s nice to see a real good show like this for the North.”

As for the new set of wheels that Sutherland will be rolling out of town with? He looks forward to taking a trip in his brand new truck.

“It felt good, I haven’t seen one of those new ones this year but we’re going to enjoy it,” he said.

On the open road Bikes Against Bullies - an amazing event, doing amazing things On Sunday, July 27th, I rode from Surrey/Langley to Port Coquitlam for the Bikes Against Bullies event. It was a gorgeous morning, the temperature was perfect, the sun was out and there was hardly a cloud in the sky.

I rode into a parking lot that already had about 75 bikes in it! There were a number of booths where you could get a coffee and a cookie, Snowflake Bracelets etc...everything seemed very well organized for an event only in its second year.

Tneesa The Bikes Against Bullies event was started by Tneesa Tyerman and her mom Kymberley.

Tneesa’s step sister Sophia went to school with Amanda and wanted to do something positive and so this became a family affair with Tneesa’s dad, Tracy, Kymberley’s ex-husband also getting involved. It was amazing to me how everyone from the two blended families just dug in and made this a spectacular event - a free event that raises funds by selling shirts and other items like bracelets and through donations.

CAV Members I met up with some of my fellow CAV members and we got to talking and before I knew it there were 200-225 bikes in the lot and it was time to go!

We rode to Trev Deeley’s on Boundary Road with Tracy and Tneesa in the lead, the reception that was waiting for

us there was amazing. The BBQ was on, a band called One Big Bicycle was playing up a storm and there were all kinds of vendors plus a silent auction.

Sarah Karkouch There was an amazing young lady named Sarah Karkouch who sang her song Fly, and she donated $400 from the sales of her album to the Amanda Todd Legacy Society.

I got to meet Carol Todd after she had addressed the audience.

Carol Todd Carol is an amazing public speaker who captures your heart and makes you feel the pain a mother feels when their child self destructs. Amanda had made some mistakes in judgment that she paid with her life for. The cruel taunting of those who bullied her created more pain in her head than she could deal with.

Carol has many suggestions she offers to parents and to kids alike, like forced offline time and making sure that there is family time.

Bullying is horrible to experience, and many of us were bullied in school and sometimes on the job so to some extent we can identify with our young people today. BUT with the advent of the internet, bullying has become relentless. In a matter of no time at all, people can be whipped into a frenzy and thousands of people can pick on a person they deem as weak or odd in a heartbeat.

The result of bullying for Amanda

Todd was that she took her own life.

The cyber bullying had spilled into the school yard too and it became more than Amanda could bare and yet she created a video to help others: http://amandatoddlegacy.org/amandas-you-tube-videooriginal/ Amanda was also the victim of extortion, watch the 5th Estate Episode on her story: http://www.cbc.ca/fifth/ episodes/2013-2014/the-sextortion-ofamanda-todd The extortion along with the bullying, the shame, the regret, the pressure was too much for this young woman to bare.

Carol Todd, Amanda’s mom has started the Amanda Todd Legacy Fund meant to aide in support and awareness campaigns. Carol herself does a lot of speaking at schools and to parents.

The Riders of 2014 The coordinators have some changes planned for next year’s event that will make it about an hour - hour and a

half or so shorter. They realized that everyone had other commitments and many just wanted to ride as it was such a beautiful day and so they are going to have more activities in Port Coquitlam before the ride!

I was proud to play a small part in the 2014 event and look forward to playing a larger part as a sponsor again next year. Watch for the episode on the Bikes Against Bullies event on Ride Like a Local on YouTube in December!

Light Horse Show 2014

The Dawson Creek Exhibition Association played host to a Light Horse Show during the recent 2014 Fall Fair & Exhibition; an event that was well attended and enjoyed by participants, parents and spectators of all ages. There were participants registered in three junior divisions, a senior division and a few Jack Benny classes.

Not all of the riders won a prize or prize money, but all had a wonderful few days of showing what you can accomplish as a horse and rider team. The impressive number of class and door prizes were generously donated by local patrons and businesses; making winning even more of a treat.

This year’s light horse show included classes in Halter, Showmanship, Reining, Trail, Western, English, and Jumping disciplines.

Sportmanship, the most prestigious prize awarded had had both winners in both junior and senior winners with horse coolers supplied by Peace River Building and Feed Store of Fort St. John and Equestrian Options presented to each winner.

It’s always a treat to see participants smiling and encouraging each other throughout the weekend, whether they win or not.

Practice Good Cereal Grain Storage Techniques AGR-NEWS AUGUST 18, 2014

An Alberta Agriculture and Rural Development specialist says proper storage techniques are a must to maintain the quality of stored grain.

Producers that are harvesting their crops typically manage the grain by hauling directly to a grain buyer or putting the product into storage on the farm. If cereal grain is stored on the farm it is important to maintain the quality of the grain.

“The temperature and moisture content of the grain are two important factors that influence the length of time grain can be stored without a change in quality,” says Mark Cutts, crop specialist, Alberta Agriculture and Rural Development, Stettler. “In general, as grain temperature and moisture content increase, the allowable storage time decreases.”

For example, grain stored at 18 percent moisture and 18º Celsius can be stored for 20 to 30 days while grain stored at 15 per cent moisture and 15º Celsius can be stored 160 to 240 days before spoilage becomes a concern.

For long-term safe storage (more than 240 days), grain entering the bin at 14 per cent moisture needs to be cooler than 13º Celsius. “There may be pockets of higher moisture grain present within a bin that is testing an average of 13 per cent,” says Cutts. “These pockets of higher moisture can be a source of spoilage at isolated areas within a bin.

“Grain intended for long-term storage with a higher than desired moisture content should be put through a grain dryer,” says Cutts. “Aeration can then be used to keep the dry grain cool and to ensure a uniform grain temperature throughout the bin.”

If drying or aeration are not options, the grain should be monitored for heating. Permanent temperature sensing cables can be installed and used to evaluate temperatures throughout the bin. Another option is inserting a metal rod into the bin, leaving it for approximately 30 minutes, then removing the rod and checking it for warmth. “Another condition that must be carefully monitored in stored grain is the presence of stored grain insects,” says Cutts. “Under the Canada Grains Act there is zero tolerance for the presence of live insects that feed on grain. As such, checking for

the presence of insects is critical to maintaining crop quality. Warm, moist and weedy crops are particularly susceptible and should be closely monitored.”

A monitoring program for insects should include checking bins on a weekly basis during the early stages of storage. Visible insects or feeding damage are signs of an infestation. Visual observations, however, are not always guaranteed to detect an infestation. The use of probe traps, which are placed into the bulk grain to capture the insects as they move through the grain, have proven to be an effective tool for detecting stored grain insects.

“In summary, cereal grains that are stored dry and cool (less than 15º Celsius) will minimize risks associated with grain spoilage and insect infestations,” adds Cutts. “If a crop has the potential to be at risk, regular monitoring of the stored grain is critical to ensure the grain quality is not affected.”

In a media release from the company, Fran Burr, assistant vice-president of marketing, says they made the move after hearing customers ask for simplified solutions for signing grain contracts.

Ron Krahn, a long-time Cargill farm customer and co-owner of Providence Farms in Manitoba, was the first Canadian farmer to use the electronic contract signing method. He says the time-saving component was the greatest benefit for him.

“Being able to complete a contract after business hours and knowing the transaction is completed gives peace of mind,” Krahn says. “I did our first e-signature in our farm office and it couldn’t get more convenient than that.”

For every e-signature registration that goes through in 2014, Cargill employees have committed to plant one tree.
