A Lesson in Running A Railroad Efficiently and for Profit for Company and Customers Alike (Jan 22, 2015) Harry Siemens, www.

SiemensSays.com At the Western Canadian Wheat Growers 45th convention in early 2015, the convention theme, ‘Moving Forward’ saw some real forward and practical thinking from Barb Haertling, general director, Agricultural Commodities, of the BNSF railroad company, who lives in Texas.

With 52,000 kilometres of railroad track in 28 states, over 7,000 locomotives, over 46,000 employees, adding 6,000 of those in 2014, this railroad company means business, all kinds of business. It is the largest network in any of the railroads in North America.

Five years ago, Warren Buffett thought buying the railway company, and he thinks railroads underpin the U.S. economy, would be a good add to his portfolio.

“You have to have pretty deep pockets to buy a company as big as BNSF and things keep moving forward,” says Haertling. “I think as you will see, War-

ren is very open to investing in the company going forward and just really feels railroads underpin the U.S. company and that is where he wants to put his money.”

In a Bloomberg business report earlier last year, it says Buffett felt initially, his $26.5 billion buyout of railroad BNSF, was a steep price to own a business that would benefit his company, Berkshire Hathaway, over the next century.

Bloomberg says five years later, that assessment rings a bit hollow. Buoyed by an onshore oil boom, BNSF has become a cash machine for Buffett and the business is on pace to return all the cash Buffett spent taking it private by the end of 2014.

However, the intriguing and interesting content of the speech Haertling gave to the Wheat Growers had to do with the stark contrast to how the Canadian railroads operate.

“We actually go into three provinces as an American railroad,” she says.

They go into Vancouver, Northgate, SK, and from Noise, Mn to Winnipeg.

We have many employees and keep hiring many more.”

Haertling says when hiring new employees, they concentrated on in the areas where they need them the most, but many in areas where it is kind of hard to hire because of the oil industry competing for the same employee pool.

“With the drop in oil prices, it is slackening off and we will just have to wait to see how that plays out,” she adds.

Where people watching the situation in Canada and what the Canadian railways do to hopefully improve rail transportation ripping up track, getting rid of locomotives and railcars, and laying off employees to appease the bottom line and ultimately shareholders, BNSF is doing the opposite.

“We do a lot of planning to be ready for things moving forward because many things have to fall into place to make it happen and satisfy the customer,” says Haertling. “We need six months notice to be be able to get crews in place, locomotives, and any capital expenditures we need to make, and for tracking construction, it takes even longer.”

In 2014, Warren Buffett, who isn’t hands on by any stretch of the imagination, but respects the decisions of his management team, invested $5.5 billion dollars to improve efficiencies and fix the problems that saw the big rail snags

of 2013 and part of 2014. The budget calls for another investment of $6 billion for 2015.

Haertling, while not making any excuses, a number of things coming together in 2013 caused the big snags on their side of the border and the handle of the products for their customers.

No one saw the big boom in crude oil requiring not only moving oil out but supplies in. No one foresaw the skyrocketing of natural gas prices, making coal much more attractive and requiring moving that coal to destinations.

Then the big crop of 2013, surpassing all guesstimates, and throwing in the worst winter in 35 years, snags and snarl ups occurred.

Yet, BNSF, didn’t sit around and whine nor make excuses, but determined in April 2014, this would not happen again.

While not catching up totally yet, being 17,000 cars behind at that time, through strategic investments, providing incentives to load faster, allowing the free marketing system to work, things are looking much better, and Buffett will have paid off his buyout investment from the dividends of the railroad company he bought five years before.

One last thing, where in the CWB monopoly days and now beyond it, no one is quite sure how the railroads allocate freight, but in BNSF’s case, they let the market determine who gets the freight.

“What an original idea,” quipped former Wheat Board minister, the Hon. Charlie Mayer.

Edmonton - Alberta, January 14, 2015 Federal Agriculture Minister Gerry Ritz announced an investment today of up to $9.5 million to support market access and development activities for Canada’s canola industry. The $9.5 million in government funding will be combined with industry contributions for a total investment of $19 million over five years.

The investment will support market entry and development activities aimed at increasing the consumption and value of canola oil and meal in both domestic and global markets. This investment is being made through Agricultural and AgriFood Canada’s AgriMarketing Program, a five-year, up to $341-million initiative under the Growing Forward 2 program.

Federal Government Announces Investment into Canadian Canola Industry Growth

by Neil Billinger Saskatchewan has followed Ontario’s footsteps and started an organization to address consumer questions about food production.

Farm & Food Care Saskatchewan held its inaugural meeting in midDecember, replacing the Farm Animal Council of Saskatchewan, which existed for 20 years.

Farm & Food Care Saskatchewan has members in all areas of agriculture — livestock, crop and horticulture.

Executive director Adele Buettner says the goal is to reach out to consumers, the vast majority who do not differentiate between the various areas of production.

“Consumers look at what they are buying as food,” Buettner says. “They think of their food as coming from a farm. We have done a great job of growing and raising food. Now, we are going to do a really good job of connecting and having that conversation with consumers.”

One of the feature speakers at Farm & Food Care Saskatchewan’s annual meeting was Carrie Mess, a dairy pro-

ducer from Lake Mills, Wisconsin. Her blog is called, The Adventures of Dairy Carrie, which has had more than 2.3 million views since it started three years ago. She says the average consumer has questions about food production and the answers should come from the experts — the farmer.

“If a customer asks me a question, even if it takes me down a difficult road talking about sick or hurt animals, if that’s what they want to know — they deserve an answer from me. If I don’t answer them, they are going to find someone else who will.”

A 2012 survey by Ipsos Reid found that 93 per cent of Canadians indicated they know little or nothing about farming. Two-thirds of those polled said they want to know more. Buettner wants to reach out to those consumers through traditional and social media.

“Our interest is to have a conversation with consumers so they understand who farmers and ranchers are so we build on (existing) public trust. That is really what it is all about — public trust.”

Farm & Food Care Saskatchewan is funded by a wide variety of agriculture companies and organizations. The federal and provincial governments will also contribute $300,000 over the next three years.

Administered by Foreign Agricultural Resource Management Services (F.A.R.M.S.), the Seasonal Agricultural Worker Program (SAWP) links approximately 14,000 requests for seasonal workers with jobs at Ontario farms this growing season.

Not only does the 49-year-old program provide a long list of benefits to the workers and the farmers, but also it creates two Canadian jobs in the agrifood industry for every worker employed through SAWP at Ontario agricultural operations, says Ken Forth, president of F.A.R.M.S. “Governments and agricultural organizations around the world are looking at this program as a model,” Forth says. “For decades, this program has provided Ontario farmers a steady source of reliable labour as a supplement to local labour. At the same time it gives the seasonal workers well-paying employment, benefits and educational opportunities not available at home.”

tions through SAWP: · Sign contracts that guarantee them all the protections and benefits that Canadian workers receive, including WSIB, certain EI benefits and provincial health care coverage. · Receive an hourly wage rate set by Human Resources & Skills Development Canada. The hourly rate is not less than the provincial minimum wage rate or the local prevailing rate paid to Canadians doing the same job, whichever is greatest. · Earn up to five times more than they could in their own countries, which enables them to support their families, educate their children and buy and operate businesses and farms in their own countries.

Farmers have also realized great benefits from the program for more than 40 years, enabling them to hire staff that would otherwise be extremely challenging to find because of the ongoing shortage of suitable and available local Canadian workers.

“Ontario farmers pay the highest farm worker wages in North America and face intense competition from low-wage competitors,” Forth says. “Without this program, many Ontario farmers simply couldn’t continue to grow fruits and vegetables. They’d stop growing altogether or move into less labour-intensive crops.

2015 Seeding plans shaping up

by Neil Billinger Western Canadian farmers are listening to presentations by market analysts at farm shows and scouring the Internet in an effort to formulate their 2015 seeding plans.

Growers want to be ahead of the curve and grow crops that will be worth more after harvest. Analysts like Brenda Tjaden Lepp with FarmLink Marketing Solutions are being asked to look into the future. At this point, she recommends as much flexibility as possible when pencilling out potential acreage. She says there will be “big moving parts” over the next two or three months, such as canola sales to China and the condition of the pulse crop in India.

“These are big game changers, so why lock up your acres now and forfeit your ability to shift into that crop that has the best opportunity once we know more about how things are going to play out?” Tjaden Lepp says.

Flexibility is not an option for farmers planning to grow durum. Poor seed quality and higher levels of fusarium griminearum means good quality durum seed is in very limited supply. The supply situation is better for other crops, according to Laurie Wakefield, past president of the Saskatchewan Seed Growers Association.

“Most other crop kinds, there was a substantial carryover of extremely high-quality seed from a year ago (2013),” Wakefield says. “That is going to help offset some of the production challenges from 2014. But again, it’s best for commercial producers to look early for seed than wait until the last minute.”

Canola and wheat always get the largest percentage of total seeded area. Durum, red lentils, peas and flax are pretty good bets to be more popular with growers this year. That leaves smaller crops battling for every acre.

“We have to find that contract (price) level where we

can encourage at least a minimum of 400,000 acres of production to meet export requirements,” says Walter Dyck, a mustard buyer for Olds Products based in Wisconsin.

The end of crop year mustard carryover is forecast to be extremely tight with only an estimated two months of supply.

CWB weather and crops specialist Bruce Burnett gazed into his crystal ball during Crop Production Week in Saskatoon and came up with the following estimates for Western Canada. The numbers in brackets represent acreage change in percent compared to 2014.

Grain prices continued to slide on the futures boards thru the middle of January as the complex continues to sort the supply and demand tables, the former being more plentiful at this point in time.

Canola is the hypocrite of the complex, staying elevated around $450 per metric tonne ($10.20 per bushel) thanks to a suppressed Canadian Loonie but moving basis levels are the biggest thing that are creating opportunities to make sales if you still have some of the oilseed in the bin. Grain markets are feeling the effects of a strong U.S. strong dollar, while other currencies are suffering thanks to the lower oil prices and geopolitical risk negatively affecting economies. This is why prices for grain in other countries are higher than a year ago when priced in their own currency. Thus, with strong export markets suggesting world demand is available, the picture of less global wheat acres in 2015/16 isn’t entirely accurate despite them being lower in the U.S. Speaking of exports, Canadian grain movement continues to look positive though as marketingyear-to-date (thru January 15), total exports have been 18.33 million tonnes, or 13.6 per cent higher over the same period last year. Comparably though, Russian grain exports over the same period totaled 21.6 million tonnes, including 16.85 million tonnes of wheat! We’ve only seen a bit of the same ridiculous cold temperatures we did last year but it looks like the railroads do have a better handle on movement thus far despite getting fined by the government ($100,000 for C.N., $50,000 for C.P.) for not meeting weekly mandates. On the domestic side of the demand table, low grain prices increase buying opportunities for the end-user and feed markets. However, on the ethanol side of things, stocks are starting to build as refiners are refusing to blend it. Accordingly, ethanol plants are forecasted to start losing money from January through the summer when oil prices are expected to rebound and U.S. corn stocks are marginally lower.

Drew Lerner of World Weather says that more recent data suggests the likelihood of an El Nino weather event happening in early 2015 is declining by the day. This is why “we’ve already seen a couple shots of cold that have been fairly potent” and will probably “continue to see as we move forward through the balance of winter”, according to the Kansas City-based meteorologist. That being said however, Mr. Lerner does say that what happens six months from now could be completely opposite of what is being predicted today as the weather industry doesn’t actually “understand what drives El Nino”. I can respect a statement like that as it’s reinforcement of the ideology that you have to play the game that it’s front of you, not the one you’re hoping for. Manage price risk proactively by understanding your production costs and weighing a few different price and yield scenarios (i.e.

Gameplan A, B, C, etc.) allows you to analyze a few different pictures at the same time.

FCC Contributes $130,000 to 4-H Clubs AGRI-NEWS JANUARY 26, 2015

The Farm Credit Canada (FCC) 4-H Club Fund is providing $130,000 to 263 4-H clubs across Canada to support various local events and activities. In Alberta, 57 4-H clubs received a combined total of $27,750.

The fund is part of FCC’s $1 million contribution committed over four years to 4-H Canada. This contribution, in addition to supporting local 4-H activities, supports national as well as provincial 4-H initiatives.

“The future of agriculture is bright, and we’re proud to partner with 4-H and strengthen the bond between this industry and young people,” said Cory Chalk, director of marketing programs at FCC. “We have a 25-year history with 4-H in Canada and are committed to working together to ensure young people in rural

Canada continue to benefit from 4-H programs and values.”

The FCC 4-H Club Fund awards up to $500 for projects such as horse clinics, field trips, public speaking workshops, beef clipping clinics and purchase of equipment, just to name a few. The next application period opens in fall 2015.

“FCC’s support enables us to provide unique and valuable programming for our members,” said 4-H Canada CEO, Shannon Benner. “Club grants help young leaders reach their full potential and these opportunities would not be possible without FCC’s generosity.”

I learn best if...

Most clinicians have heard, “I Learn Best if”, “I can’t learn unless” or “I only can learn if”. My guess is most people have a preferred way to learn. A way they have been taught to learn or a way they feel the most confident or comfortable learning. I say most people because I know there are a lot of people that just want to learn and they jump at any opportunity, period. They have a different way of looking at things and it shows in many positive ways.

There are books, videos, private lessons, group lessons, and clinics with participants from 1 person to 60 in a class. I guess the largest group-learning environment I’ve been in is had 4000 people, it was also one of the best. I personally will not limit my opportunity to learn by having specific criteria or a list of things that have to be met before I will go.

If I feel they have something or know something I wish I could do then I’m in. I’ve been in other countries and have stopped in to listen to a clinic that was taking place and joined in on the spot. I did not have a horse with me, I did not have a saddle, I had not planned on even staying but I liked what I was seeing and hearing so I begged, borrowed and pleaded so I could get in the clinic, because I like to learn. It was not my horse but I could have cared less because I was there to learn, not train a horse. I have to learn before I can do, so the more practice I can get the better.

My horse at home would be very happy if I did all my learning on other horses and only came to him when I had learnt and not while I was learning. Like horses we have to learn, and every learning opportunity that we pass up is an opportunity wasted. If there are 30 people in the clinic, great, I can learn from everybody, either how good it might be and possibly how bad. Having many people in a clinic does not interfere in my learning -it helps. I want to know how to get things done.

I don’t expect the clinician or anyone else to do it for me because that just makes them better not me. I listen, watch, and then do. For those that say “I learn best one on one”, I say that’s one way to learn, but I look at a group

of riders and there are generally many different levels of horsemanship and abilities in the group. It gives me the opportunity to see if I can get as good or better than the best horse and rider combination in the group. It gives me something to work towards.

There are many different ways to learn but they all require us getting out of our comfort zone. Often I hear that someone learns best by watching. If that were true about any human then there would be good hockey players, swimmers, ballerinas that only watched from the stands and never practiced with the team or in front of the coach. If it was possible to get good in the stands, then how come the players aren’t in the stands and the watchers take over the field, ice rink or ballet stage?

More times than not people will do what is most comfortable for them, not what will help them learn the most. As I’ve mentioned in the past the more you are learning or changing, the more outside your comfort zone you will be.

In order to learn and do as much and as soon as possible then take every learning opportunity. Take group and private lessons, watch the videos, get front and center in all situations if there is room, sit in the stands if your leg is broke, otherwise participate. Have the mindset that you can learn in all situations not just certain ones. My top students that excel the fastest are because of this mindset.

They go in every thing they have time to do.

It doesn’t matter if they are very advanced and the clinic is full of first timers, they are there ready to learn and it shows in their horsemanship and everything else they do in life. They make a decision to take an active lead in their learning and where they want to go. They look at all situations as ways to learn rather than ways they can’t learn. It really is mostly perspective which is a powerful thing and we get the privilege to choose one.

Stay away from perspectives that are limiting and choose the perspective that empowers.

Awakening newborn “dummy” foals and calves Dr. Christa Harder I recently attended a large equine veterinary conference in Salt Lake City, Utah where I listened to an intriguing lecture by Dr. John Madigan, a professor at the University of California, Davis. During his time at UC Davis he had stumbled upon an interesting concept involving fetal consciousness in and out of utero and how we can manipulate it in non-invasive ways.

For many years we have thought that neonatal maladjustment syndrome or “dummy foal syndrome” is caused by lack of oxygen during the birthing process. This sometimes results in foals that appear to be unable to nurse, don’t have any interest in their mother, wander, and have altered levels of consciousness. Typically 80% of dummy foals will have a full recovery but it may take days of hard work to keep them alive.

As Madigan studied further what caused this dummy foal syndrome he began looking at neurosteroids.

These neurosteroids were released in high levels by the dam’s uterus which they found help keep the foal in a quiet state while in utero to prevent damage to the mare. In normal foals at about 1 hour before birth and in the following 24 hours after birth these neuros-

Madigan looked at various ways of decreasing these neurosteroids in dummy foals and finally found that if he could squeeze the foal in a way to re-create the birthing process he could bring these foals out of their “dummy state”. This signaled to the foals that they were ready to stand, nurse and run. Madigan called this technique “squeeze induced somnolence” which is done by applying ropes around the chest. The foal is “squeezed” tight for 20 minutes which typically causes the foal to lie down, relax and often fall asleep. This needs to be performed within 7 days of birth for it to be effective.

In many of the “dummy foals” that didn’t know what to do with their mothers or how to nurse, that once they woke up from their squeeze, they were immediately more alert, coordinated, acknowledge their

mothers and figured out how to suck. It was really quite remarkable to watch!

The squeeze technique is also a useful way to quietly work on a foal in the first week of life without having to sedate it with drugs.

This technique seems to work on multiple species including humans. There have been several reports of premature babies pronounced dead by doctors that began breathing and awakened after being held and squeezed by their mothers.

Calving season will be here likely sooner than foaling season therefore if you have a “dummy calf” that might qualify for the squeeze technique I would encourage you to give it a try. Dr. Madigan has just started a research trial on this technique in calves and is quite optimistic it will work as well. Canadian Cattle still Bullish FARM CREDIT CANADA JANUARY 23, 2015

by Richard Kamchen The bulls are still in Canada’s cattle market despite volatility and falling values in the United States.

U.S. live cattle futures have dropped to their lowest levels since last August.

At the same time, Canadian cattle values are finding support from a plunging loonie, which recently dipped to lows not seen since April 2009. The dollar has been under pressure from falling crude oil values and surging American currency.

Canada’s cash cattle market is at or above record high prices set in 2014 for numerous feeder and slaughter cattle

types, reports Canfax, a division of the Canadian Cattlemen’s Association.

The weak dollar is especially advantageous in the sale of cattle and boxed beef from Canada to the U.S., according to Brian Perillat.

“If their dollar’s stronger, it makes our prices very competitive and supports our prices being higher,” says the manager and senior analyst of Canfax.

The U.S. is Canada’s dominant customer, having purchased almost 1.2 million head of Canadian cattle last year. It also buys approximately 70 per cent of Canada’s boxed beef exports every year, Perillat notes.

He adds that for every one cent drop in the Canadian dollar, the price of calves rises by about five cents per

pound.

Declining oil values are providing additional support by lowering the price of fuel, as well as reducing input costs for consumer goods.

“Transportation is such a big cost of not only shipping the cattle, but shipping the beef and buns. All sorts of products are affected by the cost of freight, which is highly related to fuel prices,” Perillat says, adding if store prices come down as well, consumers will have more disposable income to spend on high-value beef.

On the flipside, a weak loonie will make the purchase of farm equipment more expensive, as imports are priced in U.S. dollars. Corn imports become more costly as well.

Competition from alternative meats like poultry and pork could cap Canadian beef gains later in 2015.

Overall, though, fundamentals in the North American beef industry are strong.

“In 2014, we had five, six per cent less beef around compared to 2013, and now we’re looking at 2015 to have even less beef production,” says Perillat.

“Cattle supplies are very tight, beef supplies are going to be tight, and global demand has generally been strong as well. We’ve seen world prices of beef increase.”

He sees at least three years of strong supply side fundamentals in North America and possibly three to five years in Canada.

The province is encouraging producers to submit at least one cow per year for sampling in order for Canada to meet its surveillance and testing commitments to the World Organisation for Animal Health.

Alberta’s fallen short of BSE testing numbers the last few years, coming in at only 5,000 to 6,000 samples, below the 10,000 target, according to the province’s chief veterinarian Gerald Hauer. Canada’s overall annual target of 30,000, however, is being met.

Farmington farm constructs space for cows and organic compost New style of barn: “Heavy-use-area bedded-pack”

By Ann Bryant Sun Journal, Lewiston, Maine (TNS) Jan. 19--FARMINGTON -- Construction of a new style of barn, a roofed, heavy-use-area bedded-pack, is progressing on the grounds of Sandy River Farms, owned by Herbert "Bussie" and Brenda York.

"Heavy-use-area bedded-pack" is a term designated by a federal program which provides funding and help with the structures' planning and engineering through the Natural Resource Conservation Service.

Instead of being tied in stalls, cows are housed in open pens on both sides of the structure and eat from a feed alley stretching down the middle. The bedded pack on which they rest is part of a compost process.

Sawdust for bedding is distributed through the pens.

Instead of cleaning out stalls, the sawdust and cow waste is rototilled regularly to create an organic compost pile. It sits on a concrete floor and grows, creating a soft, heated pile for the cattle. The pile is emptied from the pen once a year, and the feed alley is cleaned every day, York said.

"It makes a good, saleable product to either use on the farm or sell," he said.

There is no runoff with this structure, she said.

Although the program isn't new, it is new to thier program, Gianforte said.

York joins other farmers from Franklin County who have created the structures, she said.

It is a cost-share program. Seventy-five percent of costs are covered by the government, while the farmer pays 25 percent, which may include materials and labor provided by the farmer, she said.

Local NRCS conservationists Gianforte and Paul Hersey, who recently retired, have worked with York.

Their labor, along with the planning and engineering, are all a free service, she said.

In order to be eligible for the program, farmers need to submit an application and be near a natural resource that would benefit from the new structure.

There is a backlog of applicants, she said.

When the Yorks lost their barn and home to a fire caused by lightning in 1995, they rebuilt all they could afford, York said.

Although they have continued to create new facilities over the past 20 years, their herd has grown -- now at 200 head, 90 of them milking cows. Room was needed to care for the farm's dry cows and calves.

There are 6-foot cement walls and slots with curtains that can be rolled up in summer for air ventilation and down in the winter to retain heat, he said.

The structure is roofed for shelter and to prevent too much moisture from disrupting the compost process.

The building is also partially open to increase airflow so as to evaporate moisture off the top, Jade Gianforte, a conservationist with the Farmington Natural Resources Conservation Service, said.

Proper management of the bedded pack is crucial. If regularly maintained, the compost bed is safe for the animals. However, if the farmer doesn't stay on top of it, it could become a soupy mess, she said.

Cows appear to like the open style of the pen, as well as the heat and softness of the bedding pack, she said.

Birthing cows suffer fewer leg bruises when they rise, York said. Newborns can get up easier as it is soft, but still firm enough to get their footing.

But it is not just about cow comfort or compost.

"The main point is to protect natural resources on the farm," Gianforte said of the program sponsored by the U.S. Department of Agriculture Farm Bill Program.

Foragebeef.ca contains the latest information on forage and beef research for producers in Canada and the northern United States.

“The site summarizes research for farmers and ranchers,” says Ken Ziegler, beef/forage specialist, Ag-Info Centre, Alberta Agriculture and Rural Development. “It’s a unique approach to developing and organizing North American research information for the Canadian forage and beef cattle industry.”

As an example, extending the grazing season is a popular topic at this time of year, and foragebeef.ca is well equipped to provide visitors with various folders on the subject.

“The grazing season can be extended in different ways at different times of the feeding season either at the beginning of the season using well established forage regrowth that is grazed into the Christmas season, during the winter months using swath grazing of annuals like barley, oats, or triticale, by saving carryover forage over from the previous summer as fine youthful regrowth that the nursing cows or backgrounded yearlings can use as soon as the snow has melted off. Foragebeef.ca also offers folders on other strategies such as using brassicas or using corn,” he said.

Foragebeef.ca is updated regularly as fact sheets and research papers are added to the folders on the website. Approximately 200 research papers have been added to the website over the past year. “The site is a living library for research and extension information that is useful to Canadian beef and forage producers,” Ziegler said.

The website provides three levels of information. The top level is “cut to the core” information on a particular topic. Called “Knowledge Nuggets” this level provides the most important pieces of understanding on that topic. The next level is for the reader who wants more information about that topic. Links are provided to the best related information, usually in fact sheet format. The objective is to select the most comprehensive and applicable information for Canadian and northern U.S. agriculture. The third level is for people who want research related information.

This level focuses on relevant scientific review papers, research abstracts, research papers, major publications and links to research communities throughout Canada and the world.

The site features in-depth information on forage production, silage management, forage seed production, beef cow calf management, animal health issues, grazing management, and range management in addition to many other topics.

“This is a living website and news items, research results and summaries will continually be added to the site,” added Ziegler. “With these knowledge summaries, fact sheets, and research reviews, Foragebeef.ca is the gateway to the future for forage and beef information for the forage and cow calf industry.”

Thursday, February 26, 2015, sees an agriculture job fair in Lethbridge.

“Right now, we’re still looking for some more agricultural companies to participate in the fair,” said Al Dooley, agriculture labour recruitment specialist, Alberta Agriculture and Rural Development, Edmonton. “We had 18 companies at last year’s fair in Lethbridge and we’re hoping for even more this time.”

Employers that participated at past job fairs include AGI Nobleford, Cargill Meat Solutions, ConAgra/Lamb Weston, DuPont

Pioneer, and more. Employers will be recruiting various positions from entry level to skilled, temporary, permanent, part-time and full-time.

Dooley says the format is being changed slightly this year.

“Last year’s fair ran from 1-4 p.m. This year’s we’re extending the fair until 7 p.m. so that those who may be busy during the day can still come down to the fair.”

Case IH Celebrates Six Major Industry Awards Magnum™ 380 CVT wins TOTY® 2015 Tractor of the Year award RACINE, Wis. Dec. 18, 2014 — Case IH recently garnered six industry awards, a testament to its commitment to innovation and deep understanding of producers’ needs. Most notably, the Magnum 380 CVT earned the highly coveted TOTY® 2015 Tractor of the Year designation.

“Our company was very honored to receive the Tractor of the Year 2015 award,” said Jim Walker, Vice President, Case IH NAFTA. “Twenty-seven years of Magnum tractors means 27 years of approval by the toughest group of testers you can get: farmers in their daily work.”

A jury of 23 expert journalists determine the TOTY award winner. Features that contributed to the Magnum 380 CVT win include the continuously variable transmission, the easy-to-use multi-controller armrest, the new LED lighting packages and the innovative Rowtrac solution that uses a combination of rear tracks and high-tech, low-pressure front tires to

provide greater traction and minimal soil disturbance compared with two-track machines.

Along with the TOTY award, five other Case IH products earned AE50 designations, marking each as one of the top 50 most innovative new products of 2014. A panel of international engineering experts named the AE50 award winners by identifying the products that best advance engineering in the food and agriculture industries. The American Society of Agricultural and Biological Engineers organize the awards.

Getting the most out of your yield monitors after harvest Farms.com Editorial Team, January 6, 2015 Quality yield data is important today.

The end of harvest is a good time to implement good management practices for yield monitors including taking steps to winterize components. Yield monitors continue to increase and in most cases are standard options on today’s combines with the yield mapping data being important information for precision agriculture services offered across the agriculture industry. A good post-harvest combine maintenance plan should include provisions for looking over yield monitor components and possibly storing devices in conditioned locations to reduce warming and cooling cycles potentially generating condensation and ultimately unneeded corrosion or damage of electronics.

Properly cleaning and maintaining yield monitor components such as the moisture and mass flow / volumetric sensors is important. The build up of debris or warn parts will lead to inaccurate measurements by these sensors. The accuracy of yield map data is dependent upon one’s ability to maintenance and properly calibrates

grain yield monitors. Poorly maintained and calibrated yield monitors can lead to inaccurate data and thereby improper farm management decisions. This point is especially important for farmer’s conducting on-farm research since yield maps are only as accurate as the data collected to create them.

The following are the post-harvest tasks regarding yield monitors on combines. It provides a suggest list of tips.

DATA CARD: Cleanup the data card and after taking back up delete old data to provide sufficient space for the upcoming season.

Create a backup copy of your raw yield data from the season. This step should be taken before uploading yield data to a Farm Management Information System (FMIS) or providing to your trusted data consultant. Place this backup copy in a secure and safe location at your house or office.

FIELD NOTES: Write down field notes from the growing season and during harvest, if not done already. This information will be important for analyzing or using to generate prescription maps. Generally

we forget information about field conditions and yield monitor operation that can influence the resulting yield maps.

Documenting all final calibration factors is important. This information can be useful for the next growing season to Document all your load weights used for calibrating your yield monitor.

Again, this information could be useful during post-season analysis.

DISPLAY: Check the expiration dates for any subscription services you are purchasing such as for your GPS. You might want to take care of subscriptions during the winter months.

After making sure all data is stored to a data card or uploaded to storage location, turn off and consider storing inside for the winter.

Check all in-cab cabling and connections for any damage.

GPS RECEIVER: Suggest taking off the combine and storing inside if you are not storing the combine in a conditioned space.

Ensure any correction subscriptions will be renewed so ready for spring work.

MOISTURE SENSOR:

Remove sensor from housing and clean of debris, dirt, and grain.

Inspect for any excessive wear or damage of plates / fins. If damaged, suggest replacing over the winter.

Look over the wiring harness and other electronic devices (e.g. electronic control units – ECU) connected to the moisture sensor for wear or damage.

MASS FLOW SENSOR: There should not be any material built up on the impact plate Inspect for excessive wear and replace impact plate if needed.

Suggest making sure debris and dirt is cleaned from the area where the sensor is mounted since debris can attract rodents.

Look over wiring harness.

CLEAN GRAIN ELEVATOR: Check for excessive wear of the elevator chain and paddles; replace if needed.

Ensure the elevator chain tension is adjusted properly.

Check both top and bottom bearings on the clean grain elevator.

If possible, engag t e separator to ensure the yield monitor system is reading the correct elevator speed.

Streeper dogs known for their David Dyck Staff writer Jan 22/2015 Buddy Streeper knows sled dogs. After 20 years of breeding and racing them all over the world, he should.

He’s raced hundreds of times, and bred upwards of a thousand dogs from his kennels just outside of Fort Nelson.

His racing season runs from January to April, and he jams as many competitions in as much as he can over that time, usually around 12 to 14, though he’s done as many as 20 races in one season. Last year he raced undefeated, something that hasn’t happened for him in about a decade.

He said it’s impossible to find dogs to race – so he has to breed them himself.

But that’s something he comes by honestly.

His father Terry has bred and raced dogs for 40 years. Like the dogs he rears, he’s done it all his life.

Buddy is the first person the puppies smell in the first couple of days of being born, eventually coming up to join his team, or sold to other racers.

“I have to develop this dog myself, and we do that over selective breeding process that we’ve developed over the last three or four decades of evaluating dogs and selecting our best to breed. Then we improve our team and people come to us to acquire the Streeper dog.”

He said in the past month he’s had inquiries from Australia, South Africa, Montana and New England, and has sold dogs to customers in Russia, England, Alaska, the Northwest Territories and Quebec.

These aren’t the black and white, thick-

furred, blue-eyed huskies that have become associated with sled dog racing in popular culture. The breed is called an Alaskan Husky, “a glorified name for a mutt,” said Streeper, originally developed during the gold rush era in Alaska and the Yukon.

“They were bringing any type of dog that could pull a sled, and trying to get them to their claim site,” Streeper explained. “If you had a good dog, and I had a good dog, regardless of their pedigree status or their breed, they interbred those dogs.”

The result is a medium sized, lightboned dog with a long back and long legs, built for speed.

They also aren’t pets. “It’s a really friendly animal and it loves attention, but it needs to be run, it needs to have exercise.

In later years a lot of them can retire into the house and I’m sure a lot of them would adjust to the house lifestyle of being a pet, but they’re bred for the purpose of running.

It’s kind of like a thoroughbred horse,” he said.

It takes about two years for a puppy to develop into a racing dog, and during that time requires a lot of attention. Around five weeks old he’ll take them for walks every day, and have them explore areas they haven’t seen, like his barn or shop, to get them used to new sights and smells.

After around 7 months they’re big enough to harness, and he’ll start taking them out on short, two- or three-mile runs, gradually building up their strength. After a year and a half, they can go up to 20 miles.

Right now, he’s prepping his dogs for the Wyoming Stage Stop Sled Race, the second richest in the world and the pinnacle of this year’s racing season. Unsurprisingly, it

takes place in Wyoming, but it runs through Utah, Idaho, and Montana as well, over 350 miles in eight days, and crossing the Continental Divide four or five times every day. This isn’t his first time navigating that hilly, remote course – in their past six attempts at it, they’ve won five, and Streeper is hoping for a sixth this year.

Streeper pooh poohed questions about the famous Iditarod, dismissing it as not being his style.

That famous ultramarathon runs a thousand miles from Anchorage to Nome, in Alaska, and can take anywhere from a week to over two weeks to complete.

But Streeper is all about the speed.

“I’ve always considered speed to be more of the thrill that I’ve always gotten out of running dogs,” he said. “Someone who walks into my kennel and asks questions [about the Iditarod], I say, ‘Do you know who the fastest man in the world is?’ and they say, “Yeah, Lucian Bolt or Donovan Bailey or Ben Johnson or Carl Lewis.’

time, 365-day of the year job,” he said. “If a guy could bring in that income every day that would be awesome, but we’ve only got 10 or 12 days a year, so you’ve got to kind of make hay like the farmers do.”

And then there are the dangers on the trail.

He recounted a time when that particular Wyoming course put him and the other racers in a bad situation a couple of years ago. They hit a blizzard just north of Salt Lake City, and even Streeper, who lived his entire life in the north, said that this was bad.

“I’ve never seen snowflakes so big, bigger than a Twoonie coming down, and it was snowing probably 4 or 5 inches an hour,” he said. The snowmobile boomers that had been leading them along the trail broke down and couldn’t get through the terrain. That left a group of racers trying to navigate the trail in a whiteout situation.

Streeper said at that point they aren’t competing, they’re working together to survive. Even the dogs sensed that they were in some danger.

January 13-2015 Verticillium longisporum, a disease affecting canola crops which recently reduced European yields by as much as 50 per cent, has been found in Canada for the first time.

The Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) confirmed the presence of the disease at a farm research station in Manitoba.

In a release, the CFIA says it has taken action to limit any spread of the disease beyond its current location by prohibiting the movement of host material and agricultural equipment used at the research centre’s trial plot.

The disease was actually first discovered last fall by Manitoba Agriculture. That agency has warned farmers that fungicides are not effective against the disease.

Almost 95 per cent of B.C.’s canola is produced in the Peace Region.

On the open road Edmonton was the first city to enact a Motorcycle Only Noise Bylaw back in 2010.

It has caused a lot of grief for a lot of people. It is a highly discriminatory bylaw as it treats motorcyclists different than it does other road users. The fine is higher and there are specific motorcycle only road checks for noise that can take anywhere from 1/2 hour to 1 hour of a riders time.

Regarding the fine; under the Alberta Traffic Safety Act, cars and other passenger vehicles only pay 115 dollar fine for a noise violation but riders pay $250!

The lot, which has ocean views and was once owned by Big Island rancher Larry Mehau, is part of a residential subdivision on agricultural land called Waiki'i Ranch, covering more than 3,000 acres. The community, where homesites are generally 10 to 40 acres, includes a polo field, an equestrian and rodeo facility, a clubhouse with a rental apartment, a recreation center with fitness equipment and a racquetball court.

The community homeowners association said each owner has up to 20 percent of their lot under an agricultural easement for recreational purposes and that homeowners may have their own livestock or a community herd of cattle graze on their property.

"This is an incredible home," auctioneer Frank Trunzo said at the auction, according to a video. "This dream could become your dream come true."

Of course, selling a residence that is so unique and pricey can be a challenge.

In 2010 the property was listed by a traditional real estate brokerage firm for $18.5 million.

The price for the estate described as "Hawaii's premiere equestrian property" was later slashed to $8 million, according to a listing publicized in 2012 by a

to $100,000 as buyers edged the price up to $4.5 million.

"Four million-five is bid," Trunzo announced in the hotel conference room.

"Anybody else above and beyond 4 million-five?"

With the auction fee, the purchase price totaled about $5 million.

An Alberta Agriculture crop specialist says there are opportunities for growing hemp in the province, particularly organic hemp.

“Many people may now be aware that the majority of the hemp grown in Alberta is for seed purposes,” said Harry Brook, crop specialist, Alberta Ag-Info Centre, Stettler. “The market is strong for hemp seed but the fibre market is stalled due to a lack of a processing plant. However, there is one planned for southern Alberta.””

Brook said there is a lot of interest in growing hemp, especially with conventional crop prices being on the decline this year.

“Manitoba Harvest and Hemp Oil Canada, who are the two biggest companies that sign up producers to grow hemp, say they are filled up with conventional produced hemp. However, they are still looking for organic producers, and that is where the opportuni-

ties are right now” Before growing hemp, growers need permission from Health Canada. “Unless it’s one or two of the most common varieties, you will have to send in a sample at your cost to be tested for THC (tetrahydrocannabinol).. You’ll also have to show what fields you are growing hemp in, the number of acres, and where you are getting the seed.”

Once approved, there are other agronomic considerations as well. “Hemp is fairly easy to grow and develops rapidly. However, you want to keep plant height down to a manageable level. It’s a very fibrous crop and you need to minimize the biomass going through your combine to avoid starting a fire. But while growing hemp has its challenges, it also can pay you well for the trouble.”

By Andrew Gomes The Honolulu Star-Advertiser (TNS) Jan. 17--What you might call a dream home for a lover of Lincoln Logs was sold in Hawaii this week -- though unlike a typical set of the children's game that retails for $25 to $50, this model sold for $5 million.

New York-based real estate sales firm Concierge Auctions sold the home in Waimea on Hawaii island at a small but lively auction held at the Hapuna Beach Prince Hotel on Thursday.

The home, dubbed Hale Mehana and built in 2004 on 53 acres of agricultural land, was made using cedar logs notched by hand and assembled without nails.

According to property records, the company Maluhia Hale Lani Farms LLC bought the lot in 2002 for $750,000. The home, according to marketing materials, was put together in Canada where the logs are from. Then the house was deconstructed, shipped to Hawaii and reassembled.
