Silver Willow 4-H Club Report

Hello, I’m Ella Kelly and my steer is 38. In the Silver Willow 4-H club we have gone to a few meetings and started to plan the year a bit. We have gotten club jobs and responsibilities, mine being the club reporter. Everyone is getting to know each other as we go on. We are about to have a

Christmas party with the club. We have already had our first weighin. My steer was 950 pounds. We are also setting up the 4-H weigh scale at my house to hold all the weigh-ins this year. We are looking forward to the future meetings and achievement days.

Beatton Community 4-H Club report

Beatton Community 4-H Club would like to inform you, that we will be starting back up in January and new recruits are welcome.

We would also like people that participated last year to stay with us. Though to join this club you must own a horse and somewhat know how to ride.

We do have a riding instructor to teach you how to control your horse and become a better rider :) at Achievement Days we were

so happy to show off what we had learned throughout the year. We had great leaders that were always there to help us learn.

We also did a big ditch clean up alone the Cecil Lake highway and had pizza after we were done. Many of our members continue to go to horse shows and do other disciplines outside of 4-H rides and activities.

Local cowboys, cowgirl compete at seasonender in Regina

A fourth-place finish for Fort St. John’s Stephen Culling on Night 1 of the Maple Leaf Circuit Finals in Regina.

Culling wrestled his steer to the ground in four seconds flat – the top four finishers separated by just three-tenth of a second.

Bull rider Jake Gardner didn’t have the showing he had hoped for, finishing with a no score on his opening night.

Charlie Lake’s Tyrel Roberts had a 75 ride in the saddle broncs, but his 8th place finish kept him out of the money.

And, Pouce Coupe’s Lane Wills placed ninth after knocking over a barrel during her run, finishing up with a time of 18.88 after having five seconds added on.

The Northway sire’s you invest in bring with them the opportunity to sell your calves through the NGCMP that we’ve set up specifically to get you a premium price for your calves. 2. We dedicate a lot of effort and research in the cattle business and the genetics we build on are specifically designed to be a premium end product in the packing plant or out in the pasture working as mother cows. 3. We want the opportunity to buy Northway-sired calves back from our customers: paying you, the customer, a premium for those type of calves is still going to be more profitable for us in the end. 4. If you are interested in the NGCMP, please contact us and we will explain how it will work and hopefully get you set up. 5. We will explain the details of the NGCMP on sale day before the sale. Be sure to tune in on DLMS if you can’t make it to the sale. 59397 INVEST IN THE PROGRAM, NOT JUST THE BULL!! WHY INVEST IN NORTHWAY GENETICS? 1. Earlier this fall, temperature dropped to - degrees Celsius or colder In some parts of the pro ince, the temperature was up to degrees Celsius This impacts how much cattle can eat and resulting weight gain or loss

Ingested feed is digested Heat is produced during the process The heat is used to keep the animal warm Mature cattle that are dry, protected from the wind and in good condition can withstand temperatures down todegrees Celsius This is the lower critical temperature Smaller animals are not able to withstand the cold temperatures and need more care No matter what type of animal is fed, when it is below the lower critical temperature, extra energy is re uired

s it gets colder, cattle consume more feed This helps produce more heat to withstand the cold down to the lower critical temperature When cows are in colder conditions feeding an extra two pounds of grain per head per day for e ery 1 degrees Celsius temperature drop below - degrees Celsius is needed to produce extra heat If no extra grain is pro ided, cows will mobili e fat o their backs to produce energy for heat production cow at a body condition score of ersus cannot withstand as much cold and re uires more grain supplementation

warming trend also creates feeding concerns Cows will eat the higher grain rations when o ered The extra heat produced causes the animals to become stressed and feed intake drops Lower intakes can continue for up to a week

To pre ent the drop in feed intake, watch the weather forecast Reduce the amount of grain fed two to three days prior to the moderating trend to pre ent o er production of heat Expect a drop in total feed intake By the time temperatures stabili e, animals should be back on the regular ration

For more information on feeding cattle with the ariations in temperatures, call Barry at 403-741-6032 or bjyaremcio@gmail.com.

Has your cat suddenly forgotten their litterbox training and is urinating all over your house? Maybe it is peeing in hidden places, or peeing on the furniture or the laundry. It may be peeing small amounts every where or a large puddles. There could be other symptoms as well like blood in the urine or straining to pee or even yowling in pain while urinating. This is called inappropriate urination in cats, and it is a very common problem, in fact it is one of the top reasons why cats get relinquished to shelters every year.

There are many reasons why your cat is urinating inappropriately, some of them are associated with underlying medical conditions while others stem from behavioural issues. Regardless of the reason, it is a very frustrating problem to deal with and working together with your veterinarian can help get to the bottom of the issue and gure out a treatment plan. Many times inappropriate urination is the rst symptom a cat owner notices of a larger underlying medical issue and can prompt further investigation. A veterinarian will want to run diagnostics testing such as a urinalysis and bloodwork. These will help look for underlying issues such as urinary tract infections, bladder stones and crystals, kidney or liver disease or endocrine diseases such as diabetes and hyperthyroidism. All these conditions can cause cats to urinate inappropriately and should be treated. Aside from medical reasons, many behavioural reasons also cause cats to urinate inappropriately, and many of these cat owners can address themselves with changes to the home. As we all know, cats are inherently nicky creatures and anything they perceive ‘wrong’ with their toileting set-up can cause them to avoid using it. Things like the wrong litter type, or

litter that is too fragrant or not deep enough, preference for an open versus enclosed litterbox, litterbox too small, location of litterbox right beside a noisy furnace or dryer, or dirty litterboxes are all examples of preferences that can turn a cat o from using their litterbox. In general the majority of cats prefer litterboxes that are large, uncovered, located in quiet areas of the house lled with non-fragrant and ne particle litter that is cleaned regularly. Multi-cat households provide an additional layer of challenges because hierarchy and territorial behaviour between individuals can a ect litterbox usage. For example, one cat may claim a litterbox, and prevent the other cat access to it. This is problematic for two reasons; one because you can have a cat marking the litterbox to claim it, and two because the second cat cannot access a litterbox and urinates elsewhere. Therefore, the gold standard in multi-cat households is to have one litterbox per cat plus one more litterbox placed in various rooms around the house to allow access for all cats and minimize competition.

Stress in cats many times manifests as inappropriate urination, so being aware what is going on in the household is important. Big changes like moving to a new house, addition of new household members or renovations can be obvious stressors and lead to inappropriate urination. However, even smaller changes such as setting up Christmas decorations, having visitors over, or the weather changing and not being outside anymore can be enough of a stress that lead to inappropriate urination. Being mindful of upcoming changes, slowly introducing transitions, ensuring cats have access to their hidey places goes a long way in reducing some of the stress and preventing urination issues. Other produces such as calming pheromone sprays and di users like Feliway, or calming food additives can also help reduce anxiety and stress in cats and

helps prevent inappropriate urination.

To address inappropriate urination stemming from a behavioural reason you can start by ensuring there are enough litterboxes throughout the household that are regularly cleaned. Changing up the type of litter or litterbox type may help. Also minimizing stress in the household by ensuring that your cats have quiet places to hide, there is no competition to access water, food, litterbox. Using enzymatic cleaners to sanitize areas that have been stained with urine will help prevent cats from being attracted to using that area again. However if you do see signs such as blood in urine, straining to pee, painful urination, huge increase in urine output these can be signs of a more sinister underlying medical problem and we recommend reaching out to your veterinarian to help diagnose and treat the primary issue.

RDAR tours producer farms in Alberta

RDAR opened the On-Farm Climate Action Fund (OFCAF) program to application in early August. On November 7th, 2022 OFCAF closed applications for the 2022 year one intake season. OFCAF will begin accepting applications for year two of the program starting on February, 13 2O23.

On October 27th 2022, RDAR had the opportunity to host two federal Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada (AAFC)Program Managers on a full day tour of producer farms in and around the Central Alberta region that have started to implement OFCAF BMPs on their properties.

RDAR sat down with OFCAF Program Manager Fiona Briody to talk about the tour and how OFCAF program funding is making an impact on Alberta producers.

An xcerpt:

Briody: A highlight of delivering the OFCAF program has certainly been the opportunity to meet so many passionate, driven and forwardthinking farmers and ranchers that are focused on making improvements that will benefit future generations and the health of land they farm on. Many of the farmers and ranchers that we visited on this tour we met while working through their OFCAF applications only a few short weeks prior. The development of this tour is a testament to the warm and welcoming nature of the family farmers who opened their doors and welcomed us to their farms to have these important discussions.

On Thursday Oct 27th, RDAR had the opportunity to host a tour for AAFC staff. The two staff members that joined this tour were AAFC Senior Program Officer Abdullahi Keinan and AAFC Program Manager Luka Kovacec. This tour focused on OFCAF and gave our guests a chance to see real-life outcomes of the RDAR funded research that is taking place on farms here in Alberta.

The objective of the day was to connect with producers and give our AAFC guests a chance to have in person conversations about OFCAF, and give producers a chance to ask and answer questions about RDAR and on farm research.

Each farm we visited provided insights into what they do, why they made the BMP changes on their operation and what they had learned through the OFCAF application process. This tour gave RDAR and our AAFC guests the chance to see and hear many producers short and long-term goals for their farm operations. The farmers that we had the opportunity to speak to on this tour had a strong commitment to lifetime learning, many noted that they are consistently tweaking how they farm and continually building on the structure and systems that they currently have in place.

The Tour

The First stop on our tour was Groot Farms, a potato/cereal crop farm near Gibbons Alberta. This farm had applied to OFCAF to put in cover crops. Additionally, this farm brought in cattle to increase the health of their soils particularly on their potato land. Soil health and regenerative practices were the topic of conversation on this leg of the tour. Many farmers throughout the tour said that OFCAF funding will help to build out their long term goals — which is to preserve the health of the farm for their family and future generations.

The last stop on our tour was a bison farm in Hay Lakes Alberta. This farm is implementing rotational grazing and a water distribution system for their bison herd.

Supporting agricultural labour demands

To support producers and processors, Alberta, in partnership with the federal government, is providing $2.5 million to Ag for Life to help companies recruit, hire and retain workers in the agriculture and agri-food industry.

Since 2011, Ag for Life has delivered agriculture education to over half a million Albertans across the province. As a charitable organization, Ag for Life works with producers to develop high-quality programming to inspire a better understanding of the integral role agriculture plays in our economy.

“Canada needs more skilled workers to help strengthen our workforce. Through our investments in skills development and employment services, we’re working with provinces and territories to ensure that, across Canada, more skilled workers can be hired and retained. Last year, almost 97,000 Albertans were supported under the federal labour market transfers with Alberta. This funding is critical to supporting Ag for Life, reaching more Albertans with labour market training supports and ensuring that employers have the skilled workers they need,” says Carla Qualtrough, federal Minister of Employment, Workforce Development and Disability Inclusion

The funding will provide eligible organizations with grants of up to $40,000 to increase public awareness of agricultural career opportunities through online advertising campaigns.

“Alberta’s agriculture sector continues to grow and set new investment and export records despite facing numerous challenges. This funding will help producers and processors with their labour needs so they can remain competitive, grow their businesses, and respond to an international food shortage,” adds Nate Horner, Minister of Agriculture and Irrigation

As part of the funding, Ag for Life will also offer grants of up to $25,000 to provide organizations with human resources training to support worker retention.

“The agriculture and agri-food industry are major job creators that fuel Alberta’s economic growth. This funding offers valuable support to Alberta employers and helps them succeed in our thriving economy. Supporting jobs in agriculture means creating prosperity for Albertans,” notes Brian Jean, Minister of Jobs, Economy and Northern Development

Funding is being provided through the Canada-Alberta Labour Market Development Agreement.

Eligible companies can apply for the grant through Ag for Life until March 2024.

In 2021, food manufacturing was the largest industry in the province (23.8 per cent of provincial manufacturing sales), ahead of petroleum and coal product manufacturing (22.7 per cent) and chemical manufacturing (16.8 per cent).

Canadian crop deliveries and exports

“Weekly updates from the Canadian Grain Commission provide useful crop market movement and demand information,” says Neil Blue, provincial crops market analyst with the Alberta government.

The CGC numbers include only movement of bulk crops through facilities licensed by the CGC, so exclude container movement of crops.

“The latest Canadian Grain Commission numbers on Canadian crop movement from August 1, 2022 through November 6, 2022 compared to last crop year show for most crops producer deliveries are near or exceed the year ago pace.”

“Wheat has outstanding crop export volume to date,” says Blue. “A reason for that could be the very low carryover of most other crops from last crop year. The 2022 Canadian wheat crop is of high quality. Combined with the weak Canadian dollar, our high quality wheat crop may be providing Canadian exporters with a competitive advantage so far this crop year.”

It has taken a few weeks to re-establish supplies of other crops in the handling system. Exports of peas and lentils are not shown because much of those crops are shipped by container and are excluded from the CGC numbers.

Barley exports are behind last year’s pace, although last year there was a strong barley export volume to start the year. A significant volume of feedgrain is excluded from these numbers since most of it bypasses the elevator system for direct sale to an end-user, or is used by the crop producer for on-farm feeding.

“After a slow start, canola exports have caught up to last year’s pace. Domestic use of canola to date is similar to last year’s fast pace as very strong crush margins keep domestic crushers eager to purchase and process canola,” says Blue.

Variety Selection Using the Seed Guide

Alberta Regional Variety Advisory Committee (ARVAC);

The greatly anticipated Alberta Seed Guide will hit producer mailboxes at the end of January, and growers will be scouring the tables to see the latest, greatest options for the next growing season.

Variety selection is a huge part of decision-making on Alberta farms. Each year, farmers decide if they will be ‘upgrading’ to a new variety. After harvest, growers will assess the yield performance, standability, disease tolerance, insect resistance and grain quality of the variety they grew. There are many scenarios where growers are looking for something better. However, it is a challenge for growers to know what the best variety choice is for their farming operation.

When selecting a new wheat or barley variety for the farm, the seed guide is one important source of third-party, independent data that has been vetted by over 40 industry experts from all ranges of the seed production value chain. To get full value from the Alberta Seed Guide, it is important to understand how the data was generated and how it should be interpreted.

Data for the Alberta Seed Guide

Data for the seed guide comes from the Alberta Regional Variety Trials (RVTs). These are small plot trials, grown at multiple locations (up to 16 sites depending on the crop type) across Alberta, that compare the performance of newly registered wheat, barley, oat, flax and triticale varieties with the performance of well-known check cultivars. These field research plots are conducted by trial cooperators from Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada, Applied Research Associations, Nutrien, Lakeland College, Olds College and InnoTech Alberta.

New varieties are tested for three years to understand their performance under different environmental conditions. For example, the growing conditions, disease and insect pressures at Lethbridge are very different than those experienced in Fort Vermilion. To support confident variety selection for Alberta farmers, it is important to understand how varieties perform. The RVTs provide this testing.

How a producer organization in the livestock producers track feed types

Why feed testing?

Livestock feed types, quality and feeding impact animal productivity, health and welfare as well as product quality, safety and producer incomes. Beef cattle producers know that feed is nancially the single most important element of their operations, accounting for up to 70 % of the annual cost of production. Feed quality is the ability of the feed to support the desired level of animal weight gain or milk production with the quality needed depending on the category of beef cattle being fed and associated feeds in the diet. In order to maintain an optimum balance between feed costs and beef cattle production, it is important to analyze feeds to enable adequate supplements. Forage analysis usually consists of a measure of protein, detergent bre, energy, macro and micro minerals to assist in formulating rations for the various beef stock classes. Peace Country Beef and Forage Association (PCBFA) is a producer-organized applied research and extension group based out of Fairview in the Peace River region of Alberta. PCBFA’s Feed Testing Program provides forage analysis services in making available probes for feed sampling, serving as a conduit for feed samples collected by producers to laboratories for analysis and the interpretation of results of feed analysis for producers. This article is based on laboratory feed analysis reports from feed samples sent by producers through this service for the period between 2005-2022. So, over the years, we have been able to gather information on the forage quality of feed samples, demonstrate the typical wide range in the forage value of feed samples, observe trends in forage quality and evaluate several forage-based feeds against their ability to meet the nutrient requirements of beef cattle stock. These feeds include traditional and nontraditional sources such as crop residues, grass aftermath, silages, grass hay, greenfeed and grains.

What we did

PCBFA has been able to keep track of over 2600 feed samples and feed quality analysis from 2005 to spring 2022 from producers in the Peace. After data cleaning, 2433 samples were found worthy of being considered for analysis and interpretation. The samples have been organized into feed types as submitted by producers (Table 1). Only feed

types with 4 or more entries are shown here. The data for each feed type was analyzed qualitatively and where possible sums, means, percentages/frequency and modal values were calculated. For each feed type, the results are presented and discussed in relation to its ability to meet the minimum daily nutrient requirements for crude protein (CP), total digestible nutrients (energy), calcium (Ca), phosphorous (P), magnesium (Mg), potassium (K), copper (Cu), zinc (Zn), manganese (Mn) and iron (Fe) of dry mid gestating beef cows (low nutrient requirement) and nishing beef calves (high nutrient requirements) as recommended by National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine (NASEM, 2016).

What we found out

The results are presented in Table 1 and show that hay constituted the bulk (60 %) of samples submitted by producers in the Peace for forage analysis over the 17-year period.

Forage quality-wise, most of the hay feed types met minimum CP nutrient requirements for dry gestating beef cows but not for nishing calves. For energy requirements, about a third of all hay feed types did not meet the energy requirements of a dry beef cow while almost all can be considered energy de cient for nishing calves. Calcium was de cient in about 15 % of hay feed types for nishing calves while phosphorus was in 30 % of hay feed types for nishing calf and almost all hay feed types for nishing calves. Magnesium and potassium requirements for dry beef cows and nishing calves were adequate in almost all hay feed types.

Greenfeed type of samples accounted for about 7 % of total feed samples submitted by producers for analysis. In terms of forage quality, greenfeed feed type could mostly meet minimum CP, energy, calcium, magnesium and to an extent the phosphorus requirements for dry beef cows at mid-pregnancy but not for nishing calves.

Silage samples made up just over 10 % of the forage samples analyzed. The pure legumebased silages could meet the minimum CP requirements for dry cows and to an extent for nishing calves while the cereal-based silages were mostly de cient in meeting the CP requirements of nishing calves. For energy, 15 % and 66 % of silages were de cient in meeting energy requirements for dry cows and nishing calves respectively. Almost all silages could adequately meet Ca requirements for dry cows while mostly legumebased silages could meet calcium requirements for nishing calves. Cereal-based

silages were de cient in meeting both the calcium and phosphorus requirements for nishing calves.

Straws accounted for about 6 % of samples analyzed. They were de cient in meeting most of the nutrient requirements of both dry cows and nishing calves. But for calcium requirements for dry cows and the magnesium and potassium requirements for both dry cows and nishing calves, the straws were 60 % and 97 % de cient in meeting the CP requirements of dry cows and nishing calves respectively. Two-thirds of straws and almost all the straws could not meet the energy requirements of dry cows and nishing calves respectively.

Swathed oat and triticale made up about 1.5 % of the total forage samples analyzed and could meet nutrient requirements for mostly dry cows but not for nishing calves. Speci cally, almost two-thirds of the swathed oat and triticale samples were de cient in meeting CP, energy, calcium and phosphorus requirements for nishing calves.

About 3 % of samples were baleage forage samples and could mostly meet nutrient requirements for dry cows but not for nishing calves. Baleage samples were de cient by 60 %, 80%, 40 % and 94 % in respectively meeting the CP, energy, calcium, and phosphorus requirements of nishing calves. Haylage samples made up less than 1 % of the total feed samples analyzed and just like for baleage, met most of the nutrient requirements for dry cows but not for nishing calves.

Standing corn samples accounted for about 2 % of samples and could mostly meet the nutrient requirements for dry cows but not for nishing calves. More than 90 % of standing corn samples were not able to meet CP, calcium, and phosphorus requirements for nishing calves while about half of them were energy de cient for nishing calves. About 44 aftermath samples (2 % of total) were submitted for analysis (results not shown in table) with 50 % of the aftermath samples not meeting CP requirements for dry cows while about 77 % fell short of the CP requirements for growing and nishing calves. For energy, about 28 % and 100 % of aftermath samples supplied inadequate quantities for dry cows and growing calves respectively. For calcium, the aftermath samples could meet most of the requirements for dry cows but not for growing calves with almost 90 % of them being de cient. For phosphorus, between 50 – 90 % of the aftermath samples could not meet the nutrient requirements of dry cows and growing calves. About a third

of aftermath samples could not provide adequate magnesium and potassium for growing cows and nishing calves.

Various grain samples (95 ≈ 4 % of total) were also submitted for analysis (results not shown in table). Most of the grain samples could meet the minimum CP requirements of dry cows and nishing calves except for oats with about 40 % of samples which fell short of the recommended CP requirements for nishing calves. In general, almost all grain samples analyzed could meet energy requirements for both dry cows and nishing calves. Grains were particularly de cient in Ca with almost all barley, oats, wheat, faba beans, canola and peas samples supplying inadequate quantities of Ca for the daily requirements of growing and nishing calves. Most grains could supply adequate phosphorus, magnesium and potassium requirements except for the cereal (barley, oat and wheat) grains which supplied inadequate potassium for both dry cows and nishing calves.

Only 87 samples (just under 4 % of total samples) were analyzed for trace minerals (Table 2). Trace mineral de ciency was common in feed samples analyzed with copper, manganese and zinc de ciency evident in 90 %, 33 % and 20 % of the samples analyzed respectively. All feeds tested for trace minerals met the recommended iron requirements with some samples greatly surpassing recommended levels. About 3 % of feed samples were analyzed for nitrates with an average nitrate concentration of 0.38 % and range of 0.001 % to 2.4 % and 15 samples above the 0.50 % cut-o for toxicity.

Implications of what we found

The most popular feed categories sent for analysis in order of importance amongst Peace Country producers were hay (60 %), silages (10 %), greenfeed (7 %), straws (6%), baleage & haylage (5%). These results re ect the higher priority given by producers in the Peace Country to determining the nutrient content of their stockpiled feed.

A wide variation was observed in the analysis of the same feed types with hardly any feed type completely or consistently meeting or not meeting each of the nutrient categories. Reasons that can account for this variation may include but are not limited to a di erent stage at harvest, processing method, and fertility of the soil. Despite this variation, some general trends emerged from the data and include:

- The de ciency of hays in meeting protein, energy, and phosphorus requirements of particularly nishing calves.

- The inability of greenfeed in meeting almost all nutrient requirements (but for magnesium and potassium) of nishing calves.

- The inadequate nutrient contents of silages with respect to meeting requirements for nishing calves except for magnesium and potassium requirements.

- Straws are relatively very de cient in meeting protein and energy requirements for both dry cows and nishing calves as well as calcium and phosphorus requirements for mostly nishing calves.

- Swathed oat/spring triticale, baleage/haylage and standing corn mostly met nutrient requirements for dry beef cows but not for nishing calves.

- All grains were generally rich in protein and energy wise but de cient in calcium with cereal grains particularly de cient in potassium.

- Copper de ciency is quite common amongst feed types analysed with manganese and zinc being mostly su cient for beef cattle.

The observed trends imply that some form of supplementation will have to be done to balance rations. This will involve using more leguminous forages to o set crude protein de ciencies, more energy-rich feed types to o set energy de ciencies and some form of mineral salt supplementation where mineral de ciencies have been noted.

Some recommendations are worth highlighting here:

- Almost 13 % of feed types sent were unspeci ed and could not be properly categorized. Producers will have to make a conscious e ort to properly de ne the feed types sent in for analysis.

- Producers are encouraged to make requests for trace minerals to be analysed in their feed samples as copper de ciency was identi ed as being quite common in The Peace.

- Need for nitrate and prussic acid analysis especially as toxicity levels were measured in over 20 % of samples submitted for nitrates. Nitrates are a concern immediately following a period of drought or wet, dull weather. If this is the case, producers are encouraged to request nitrate analysis when submitting samples for feed quality analysis.

Keeping treated seed out of grain deliveries

Treated seed residues can present a serious risk to human and animal health at certain levels, so grain elevators must maintain a zero tolerance for treated seed in grain deliveries. Health Canada has set maximum residue limits for many chemicals in grain, including those used to treat seed. Any grain that exceeds these limits may need to be condemned and destroyed.

Prevent treated seed contamination Clean up spills and dispose of leftover treated seed as required by your province or municipality Use a seed bag collection program if one is available in your area Use dedicated bins for treated seed if you can

Clean all equipment, bins and vehicles thoroughly after seeding and before harvest Visually inspect equipment and bins for treated seed: before harvest before transferring grain between bins before transferring grain to a truck or railcar for delivery

Canada’s Indo-Pacific Strategy to support growth and prosperity for the agriculture and agri-food sector

Minister of Agriculture and Agri-Food, the Honourable Marie-Claude Bibeau, met with agriculture stakeholders at the Canadian Western Agribition in Regina, Saskatchewan, to discuss the Government of Canada’s new Indo-Pacific Strategy (IPS).

Minister Bibeau toured the Canadian Western Agribition in Regina, Saskatchewan on Saturday and held two roundtable discussions: one with the Canadian Cattle Association, and a second with several Canadian agriculture associations. They discussed the IPS, and the landmark announcement that comes with it: Canada’s first ever IndoPacific Agriculture and Agri-Food Office (IPAAO).

With $31.8 million earmarked in dedicated funding, this new office will enable Canada to engage with stakeholders, regulatory counterparts, and policy decision-makers to deepen partnerships with Indo-Pacific economies that value sustained, meaningful relationships, collaboration and the sharing of expertise.

Expanding our presence in the Indo-Pacific will help Canadian farmers, food processors and exporters maximize their opportunities and position Canada as a preferred supplier in key emerging markets. The Indo-Pacific encompasses more than 40 economies and is the fastest growing region in the world. It is Canada’s second-largest regional export market and trading partner (after the United States), with $26.5 billion in annual two-way agri-food and seafood trade in 2021.

The new IPAAO will be well-positioned to help Canada expand trade, investment and supply chain resilience, one of five strategic objectives for Canada under the new Indo-Pacific Strategy, alongside promoting peace, resilience and security; investing in and connecting people; building a sustainable and green future; and ensuring Canada remains an active and engaged partner.

Every issue that matters to Canadians – our national security, economic prosperity, democratic values, public health, the quality of our environment, human rights – will be shaped by developments in this region, and the relationships Canada has with its Indo-Pacific partners. The IPS is a roadmap to deepen Canada’s engagement in the Indo-Pacific over the next decade. Our commitments and contributions under this framework will bring benefits to a range of strategic sectors for Canada, including agriculture and agri-food, where regional demand is strong and growing.

Quotes

“The Indo-Pacific Strategy is great news for Canada’s agriculture and agri-food sector. Opening a Canada Indo-Pacific office has long been a high-priority request from industry members and we will work with our partners to benefit from the opportunities this new initiative can bring. And with more than 1,250 guests from over 86 countries, Agribition is a fitting venue to kick off these discussions,” said MarieClaude Bibeau, Minister of Agriculture and Agri-Food

“We look forward to expanding export opportunities in the IndoPacific region for our world-renowned, high-quality Canadian beef. We are proud of our role in sustainably producing a nutritious protein source for tables at home and abroad,” added Ryan Beierbach, Canadian Cattle Association Director.

“The Indo Pacific Strategy will open up new markets for agricultural exports, while allowing Canada to solidify its role as a global food supplier in a time of mounting global food insecurity. Measures like the Indo-Pacific Agricultural and Agri-Food Office are critical to making meaningful strides in markets around the world, by ensuring Canadian agriculture has a strategic presence in what is a critical market for Canadian producers,” said Todd Lewis, 2nd Vice President of the Canadian Federation of Agriculture.

Small-flock poultry owners encouraged to register for final avian flu session

The Ministry of Agriculture and Food is holding a final virtual information session tomorrow for B.C. small-flock poultry owners.

As the cases of avian influenza continue to increase in British Columbia, the virtual session will focus on how owners can protect their flocks and how to prepare for if their birds become sick.

The session is being led by B.C. government veterinary specialists. Attendees will learn about:

improving flock or farm biosecurity to reinforce against disease outbreaks;

recognizing the signs of avian influenza and how to report cases; how foreign animal disease regulations affect small-flock poultry; what to expect if a flock is positive for avian influenza; and resources available for non-commercial bird owners, including diagnostic services through the B.C. Animal Health Centre.

Since September 2022, the Ministry of Agriculture and Food has held seven in-person and virtual sessions in communities throughout the province. The final virtual session is intended for all B.C. smallflock owners and will take place on Monday, Dec. 5, 2022, from 5:30 to 8 p.m.

Since the first confirmation of avian influenza in B.C. poultry in midApril 2022, there have been more than 60 cases in B.C., and more than 45 since the fall bird migration began in September. Since Nov. 16, there have been more than 30 cases.

Quick Facts:

Avian influenza is a federally regulated disease and the Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) leads the investigation and response with provincial support for testing, mapping, surveillance and disposal.

Wild birds have also tested positive for H5 strains of avian influenza in multiple regions of B.C.

On Oct. 14, 2022, the Province’s chief veterinarian issued a general order requiring all people responsible for birds to not take birds to events such as poultry swaps, auctions, flea markets, bird shows, fairs, public displays or competitions where birds from multiple sources would be present.

Poultry owners with birds showing symptoms of avian influenza should contact their veterinarians for assistance.

The Wild Bird Mortality Investigation Program hotline, 1 866 4312473, accepts public reports of dead wild birds.

This is an extension of an ongoing North American outbreak, with cases in provinces across Canada.

Anyone requiring assistance in registering for the upcoming virtual information sessions can call the Animal Health Centre toll free at 1 800 661-9903 or email: PAHB@gov.bc.ca
