Transformation

of the Western

The Western Milk Pool is pleased to announce that all five western provincial Boards have unanimously agreed to support a new modernized governance model for working together.

BC Milk, BC Dairy, Alberta Milk, SaskMilk, and Dairy Farmers of Manitoba

Milk Pool

have all agreed to a partnership approach that aligns the resources and expertise of the five organizations under one WMP.

The historic decision to unanimously support WMP transformation, and establish a new governance model, addresses the need to work together more efficiently, make decisions faster – and provide a more organized, unified voice for western dairy farmers in discussions at the national table and with all dairy stakeholders.

The WMP transformation is supported by a clear vision, mission, guiding principles and decision-making authority to ensure milk quality remains consistently high, “drive excellence in dairy”, and support a stronger, vibrant dairy industry in Canada.

The WMP is very much a long-term, forward-looking partnership which will continue to spearhead several priority initiatives already underway. These include:

Continuing to advance the Dairy Innovation West (DIW) project – the new state-of-the-art dairy concentration facility that will be built in Alberta, with the capacity to accommodate up to 300 million litres of milk from western dairy farmers per year.

Aligning policies across the four western provinces to ensure farmers are treated equitably and there is consistency for processors as we continue to collectively focus on the most innovative practices for ensuring farm excellence.

Forming a WMP transportation team to focus on efficiency and accountability to provide the best value and service to the industry – including a fully harmonized milk transportation system that meets the needs of both dairy farmers and processors through common transporter policies.

Processor Relations and Business Development to better engage western processors and create a more attractive business climate for farmers and processors in the context of a national framework, leading to a stronger dairy industry in Canada.

Establishment of an integrated communication function with pooled resources to ensure clear, consistent, responsive messaging on WMP decisions and the dairy industry and foster open dialogue and engagement with all stakeholders.

The next step in WMP transformation is finalizing the new governance model, which is expected to be completed by Spring 2023. Following this important milestone, the work will begin to fully operationalize the WMP within the legislative framework of each province.

Get an assessment of your grain’s quality

“One of the services of the Canadian Grain Commission (CGC) is the Harvest Sample Program, which gives producers a free grade on samples from that year’s crop,” says Neil Blue, provincial crops market analyst with Alberta Agriculture, Forestry and Rural Economic Development. “Producers can then use those grades as part of their crop marketing.”

The grade information from the CGC provides the producer with a base grade to compare with grades on those same representative samples provided to crop buyers. Grading is based on both visual opinion and instrument analysis, resulting in some differences in grades assigned. The CGC grade is unofficial, but is from an independent, non-commercial source. It is not used in negotiating a sale grade, but it gives producers confidence in shopping the market with their product.

On request, the Canadian Grain Commission sends producers postagepaid envelopes in which they can place representative samples and return to the Commission. The Harvest Sample Program can be used for cereal grains, pulses, canola, flaxseed, mustard seed and soybeans. The grading report includes the following valuable information that a producer can use in crop marketing:

unofficial grade dockage assessment on canola protein content on barley, beans, chickpeas, lentils, oats, peas and wheat oil, protein and chlorophyll content for canola oil and protein content and iodine value for flaxseed oil and protein for mustard seed and soybeans falling number for wheat and rye vomitoxin (deoxynivalenol or DON) levels for wheat, corn and barley Grade results are available within 20 business days from when the CGC receives a sample. Producers can submit samples of their newly harvested crops each fall.

but in collecting the grade information, the Commission can assemble and publish aggregated data on crop quality, useful to sellers and both domestic and international buyers,” says Blue. “Producers may sign up for the Harvest Sample Program on the website of the Canadian Grain Commission.”

“With the high cost of fertilizer inputs, now more than ever, it is important to make the best use of available on-farm nutrients such as manure and compost,” says Trevor Wallace, nutrient management specialist with Alberta Agriculture, Forestry and Rural Economic

Development. “Ensuring that nutrients are used effectively minimizes nutrient loss. Adding too much manure or compost can negatively impact air, soil, groundwater and surface water quality, not to mention be very costly.”

Testing and analyzing the soil in your fields provides an understanding of what nutrients are available for crop growth, as well as the physical, chemical, and even biological characteristics of the soil. This information is invaluable when selecting the right rate for manure or compost application. Read Consider the right time for manure or compost application

“The ideal time to assess your soil is just before a crop’s active growth stage when soil nutrient uptake is high. In most areas of Alberta, it is generally safe to begin fall soil sampling by mid-October. Fall sampling in forage fields can begin any time after September 1.”

Use a reputable soil testing laboratory that uses Alberta data to determine fertilizer recommendations. Producers can contact their local agricultural fieldmen, applied research or forage association, industry or private agronomist, or 310-FARM (3276) for more information on soil and manure sampling and labs available to complete the analysis.

Assess and account for other nutrient additions such as previous fertilizer, manure or compost application, or irrigation water. Use book values found in the Manure Characteristics and Land Base Code or test the manure or compost to estimate the nutrient content to calculate manure application rates.

“The best time to collect a manure or compost sample

is during application,” says Wallace. “The initial manure or compost application rate is determined based on book values or previous analyzed samples. Once the latest samples are analyzed, and bulk density and manure analysis information is available, the calculations can be updated to determine the correct application rates and determine whether additional fertilizer is required.”

Manure and compost application rates should be adjusted based on method and time of application to reduce potential nutrient losses. Method of application influences the potential for nutrient loss through runoff and volatilization, which can be reduced by incorporation or injection. Applying the nutrient source as close to crop need as possible also minimizes the risk of nutrient loss. The greater the lag between application and crop need, the more opportunity for microbial or environmental activities to tie up or transform nutrients resulting in transport and loss.

Finally, weather conditions at the time of application can significantly influence loss. The least optimal time for application is on frozen or snowcovered ground, as infiltration is limited, and plants are not growing to utilize applied nutrients. Adjust application rates based on application method and timing as well as anticipated environmental conditions. Read Consider the right time for manure or compost application

“Once the application rate has been determined, you can determine if additional fertilizer is required to meet shortfalls for any one nutrient. Supplemental fertilizer application may be needed in response to weatherinduced losses after manure or compost application. Monitor conditions through the season to determine if any additional nutrient applications are warranted based on changing economic or weather conditions.”

APG seeks advisors in all zones to grow Pulse industry

Pulse producers who want to grow the province’s pulse industry while developing their own leadership skills are invited to let their names stand for election as an Alberta Pulse Growers (APG) Advisor at their zone meeting this fall.

“I strongly encourage any interested pulse farmers to join the APG team,” said APG Chair Robert Semeniuk. “I joined the organization as an Advisor like most APG Directors. Becoming an Advisor is a great way to get involved with APG. Each of our five zones has available positions and it’s a good introduction to the organization, working on committees, and making things happen for Alberta pulse farmers.”

A team of Advisors leads extension activities specific to each of APG’s five zones. Directors on APG’s provincial board often serve as Advisors first.

Available positions are presented below, along with this fall’s meeting dates. There will be a province-wide APG production livestream on December 5 as well. Please register in advance for all events via albertapulse.com/event/

Producers must have sold pulses and paid service charges since August 1, 2020 in order to be eligible as an Advisor. Anyone interested in letting their name stand for an Advisor position is asked to complete and submit a Nomination Form by Nov. 9, 2022. Each candidate must be endorsed by another pulse producer from their zone. The form and zone map are available on the homepage at www.albertapulse.com .

The Alberta Pulse Growers Commission represents 6,500 growers of field pea, dry bean, lentil, chickpea, faba bean and soybean in Alberta. Our vision is to have Alberta pulses on every farm, on every plate.

Glenn Stewart - international talent right here in the Peace

Glenn Stewart has been working with horses and their owners for over 40 years teaching thousands of students his Horse Development Program.

Glenn’s work with and knowledge of horses is diverse. He travels extensively each year delivering horsemanship clinics across Canada, the United States, South America and Europe.

Glenn leads camps at his home in Fort St. John at The Horse Ranch. For 19 consecutive years, he led the Learning Holiday Adventure High & Wild in the Northeastern Rocky Mountains – a remote location 160 kilometers from the nearest roads. Glenn was in charge of the horse program and developing 200+ herd of wild horses.

This included: the breeding program, seasonal roundup, the taming/gentling, foot breaking, trimming, overall maintenance of the herd and welfare. Ultimately horses were prepared annually for people from all over the world, with varying degrees of horsemanship abilities to be able to safely ride in the wilderness of the Canadian Rockies.

“I believe people get into horses because they love the thrill and connection that is possible. I also believe the connection and thrill of a good partnership with your horse is much deeper than most realize and is worth the effort,” he says.

Glenn has a diverse background, education and

unique expertise to offer.

Some of Glenn’s Awards include:

Champion, 2020 Heart of the Horse Colt Starting Competition, Alberta Canada Champion, 2019 Heart of the Horse Colt Starting Competition, Alberta Canada

Canadian Representative 2012 World Championship of Colt Starting, Tennessee USA

Champion, 2010 Cowboy Up Challenge, Calgary Stampede, Alberta Canada

Nominated for Western Horseman of the Year

Glenn has been asked by a variety of organizations to be a keynote speaker or lead team building and leadership training for:

Public and private corporations Oil and gas industry leaders

Canadian billionaire business leaders

Leadership conference for medical professionals Western College of Veterinary Medicine

Civic leaders and city managers Talk of the Town Equine expositions and competitions

Regardless of the dream or discipline, whether cutting, reining, dressage, ranch roping, jumping, racing or pleasure riding the common denominator is always the horse. “Horsemanship” is the tool you use to develop the skills required for the particular discipline you are interested in. “Horsemanship” is what keeps you and the horse safe and gives both parties enjoyment. The more you understand the horse and work with their natural tendencies the more

extraordinary the results can be. It is natural if you cause and allow learning to happen rather than make.

Considering the horse’s point of view first and then the best way to present your idea can all be learnt. If you get it right, everything else will be too! If you understand what is important to them, have the ability to read each as an individual and know the why, the how and the when to responding, the possibilities for what horse and human can achieve in a partnership are limitless.

The Peace Region Forage Seed Association

The Peace Region Forage Seed Association was formed in 1995. The association brought together the longer histories of several associations in the Peace River region of both Alberta and British Columbia.

The Fine Seed Committee of the BC Grain Producers Association and the Alberta Alfalfa Seed Producers Association - Peace Branch and local members of the Canadian Seed Trade Association added their years of experience and expertise working for the industry, to the association. PRFSA celebrated it’s 25th anniversery as an association in 2020.

From a handful of committed people in 1995, the membership in the Peace Region Forage Seed Association grew to 215 members in 2002. In 2005, the levy paid by forage seed growers constitutes membership in PRFSA. Currently there are over 500 grower members and over 50 corporate and associate members.

A seven member Board of Directors drawn from the PRFSA membership governs all activities of the Peace Region Forage Seed Association. The board consists of three Alberta producers, three BC producers and one seed trade member. The association also has three provincial government advisors and one research advisor.

The directors contribute their time and expertise. They are reimbursed for direct expenses, their travel and a per diem for their contributions. They currently have several contractors hired who each work part time for this association including a coordinator, a bookkeeper, and a central levy administrator.

Farmers, ranchers benefit with extreme weather support

B.C. farmers and ranchers looking to improve their climate preparedness and resiliency to wildfires, flooding and extreme heat, can apply for the second intake of funding through the Extreme Weather Preparedness for Agriculture program.

The new program is helping reduce the effect of climate change and extreme weather events and build a more resilient and competitive agriculture and food sector that puts food on the tables of British Columbians and employs B.C. workers.

The $1.5-million Extreme Weather Preparedness for Agriculture program supports a variety of projects tackling wildfires, flooding and extreme heat. To date, 50 applications and more than $440,000 have been approved from the first intake this past summer, including:

farm building retrofits to improve cooling during extreme heat; FireSmart critical Infrastructure assessments;

tree and berry infrastructure improvements including canopy cooling, and shade and heat protection for harvested fruit, berry and vegetable crops, and flood-proofing fuel tanks and farm-input storage facilities. The second intake of the program will be open to farm and ranch businesses throughout B.C. in October. Funding will be allocated on a first come, first-served basis for all eligible agriculture businesses.

Eligible applicants can access as much as $35,000 in costshared funding.

Agricultural Society Innovation Award accepting applications

“The Agricultural Society Innovation Award recognizes agricultural societies for their innovation, resilience and commitment to their communities,” says Susan Lacombe, program coordinator with Alberta Agriculture, Forestry and Rural Economic Development. “This award allows us to work together to champion and celebrate the significant contributions that agricultural societies make, while inspiring others to take action.”

The program recognized 2 agricultural societies in 2021, which made tremendous impacts on their communities – the Calmar and District Agricultural Society and the Rocky Mountain House Agricultural Society.

The Calmar and District Agricultural Society and curling club were gifted a piece of land to farm. Using donated materials, machinery, seed, fertilizer, crop insurance and a host of volunteers, profits from the harvest were distributed to the curling club and other Leduc County charities and organizations. This had a tremendous impact on the local community.

The Rocky Mountain House Agricultural Society was recognized for developing a series of agriculture education videos for grade 4 students. These videos featured local farms and producers covering a wide range of topics from

farm safety, equine safety and dairy, beef and sheep production, to information on 4-H steers. These videos are also available to the public, and can be incorporated into future in-person educational programming.

A selection panel made up of individuals representing agricultural societies will evaluate the 2022 applications based on a ranking system that includes creativity, community impact, challenge overcome and overall impression.

“Up to 3 agricultural societies will be recognized at the upcoming Alberta Association of Agricultural Societies annual convention on February 3, 2023. Innovations should be something that is new to the agricultural society, and demonstrate how the society continued to positively impact community engagement, recovery and reopening during the last year.”

Applications for the 2022 award are now available. The deadline to apply is November 30, 2022.

“Agricultural societies matter and this is one small way for us to say thank you for the critical work they do in building a stronger Alberta,” says Lacombe.

Connect with Susan Lacombe for more information: 780-9686557.
