On Saturday, October 15 voters will head to the polls to cast their ballots in the Local Government Election (LGE). In the Peace River Regional District, voters will elect four Electoral Area Directors for Areas B, C, D and E, and eight Municipal Directors for the seven member municipalities throughout the region. The future elected officials will represent their constituents on the Regional Board for a four year term. The LGE will also include elections for School Board Trustees for School Districts 59 and 60.

PRRD FireSmart team conducts training with local Fire Departments When wildfires burn they don’t follow lines on a map, often crossing jurisdictional boundaries and impacting multiple communities. The PRRD FireSmart team came together with local fire departments from across the Peace region this month, to train for these types of events. A series of mock wildland urban interface fires were hosted in the North and South Peace, with crews from Fort St. John, Taylor, Charlie Lake, Tomslake, Tumbler Ridge and smokejumpers and firefighters with the BC Wildfire Service. The exercises are meant to strengthen communication channels and build key relationships while practicing hard skills and sharing ideas.

British Columbia’s cherry industry produces 95% of Canada’s sweet cherries and has an opportunity to grow even more thanks in part to the premium new cherry varieties bred at Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada’s Research Centre in Summerland, British Columbia. With the recent expansion in acreage and production volume along with global demand, sweet cherries have now become Canada’s second largest exported fruit crop behind blueberries. As the region in North America with the latest-growing cherries, British Columbia exporters have a competitive advantage when the cherries are ready to go to market in August and September.

Canada’s exports of sweet cherries continue to grow each year, reaching $78 million in Under2021.the Canada-Korea Free Trade Agreement, in force since 2015, tariffs on Canadian cherries have dropped from 24% to 4.8%, with full elimination by 2024. In agricultural trade, South Korea was the sixth-largest export destination for Canadian agri-food and seafood products in 2021. In 2021, South Korea imported over $208 million of fresh cherries from around the world. Todd Sadlier tneseed.ca 220284 or text) (780) 772-3978 todd@tneseed.caHinesCreek,AB

Quick facts Canada’s agriculture and agri-food exports have continued to increase despite sector challenges, reaching over $82 billion in 2021 and surpassing a previous target to grow agrifood exports to at least $75 billion by 2025.

Canada has been working collaboratively with South Korea to gain access for fresh cherries since 2015. Increased exports into South Korea has been part of British Columbia’s long-term strategy to grow international markets for cherries, while securing the best price.

“By continually advocating for fair market access, our government is supporting our farmers, our workers and their communities.

Today’s announcement on new market access for B.C. cherries provides Canadian farmers with new ways to deliver their world-class products to a growing market. Canada and South Korea enjoy an important trading relationship, built on longstanding peopleto-people ties and shared values, and this announcement reflects just that,” added Mary Ng, Minister of International Trade, Export Promotion, Small Business and Economic Development

Bilateral trade with Korea continues to grow – the Canada-Korea Free Trade Agreement, implemented in 2015, has significantly facilitated the growth of bilateral trade through its tariff reductions and the predictable and transparent business environment it creates for respective industries. South Korea remains a priority trading partner for Canadian agrifood products. This new access provides more opportunities for Canadian growers to diversify their exports in the Indo-Pacific region. The success of Canadian agriculture depends heavily on Canada’s ability to export to the world. The Government of Canada’s efforts continue to focus on enhancing Canada’s market presence by working to maintain, re-open and expand market access for Canadian products. “With new access to the South Korean market, growers in British Columbia can continue to showcase their cherries around the world and expand trading relationships. This step demonstrates our government’s commitment to get Canadian businesses into new and existing markets and stimulate economic growth,” Honourable Marie-Claude Bibeau, Minister of Agriculture and Agri-Food

The growth of Canada’s cherry industry is a major success story, exporting high-quality products to markets all over the world, while contributing to the economic vitality of rural communitites. Today, the Minister of Agriculture and Agri-Food, the Honourable Marie-Claude Bibeau and the Minister of International Trade, Export Promotion, Small Business and Economic Development, the Honourable Mary Ng, announced that the Government of Canada has gained market access to South Korea for British Columbia’s high-quality fresh cherries.

Front Row Seating at The Horse Ranch is the opportunity to learn first-hand, in a private setting directly from Glenn Stewart as he works a variety of horses at various stages through his Horse Development Program. He could be working with colts or putting the finishing touches on his toplevel horses – his Dream Team. This is a unique opportunity –you will be able to watch and learn as Glenn is working and sharing with you what is happening in real-time. You will see his Stages program in action and how a variety of horses – at different levels of training – learn under his clear, consistent guidance. You may see extra information about coin master spins gratis. Front Row Seating is an awesome interactive learning opportunity unlike any other I have experienced. I have done camps, clinics, and auditing before, but front row seating has been my favourite educational experience to date, the opportunity to watch Glenn in his element, with colts, and with his own horses. In a very relaxed and enjoyable setting Glenn brings the stages to life and is able to show how they come together from start to finish. Which comes in handy when you have your own horse there working on the stages, you can see and do, and get guidance from Glenn,” says Blair Dyck, of Hanley, Saskatchewan You will have the opportunity to ask questions throughout the day – getting the answers you need to improve your horsemanship directly from Glenn. You can choose to bring your own horse so you can practice what you’ve learned each session or observe and immerse yourself in this unique learning opportunity.

Lameness in horses can be caused by a multitude of di erent things. Unfortunately, osteoarthritis is something we see very commonly in our equine counterparts. Whether our horses are high level athletes or lawn ornaments, we want them to be comfortable in their everyday lives. If a horse is limping, this indicates there is pain somewhere in the body causing the horse to favour the leg(s). A lameness exam is performed to try to determine where the pain is coming from. This entails palpating all over the horse feeling for sore spots along muscles, tendons, and ligaments, palpating for any joint e usion (in ammation in the joint causing the joint capsule to stretch), hoof testing, and watching the horse move on a straight line and a circle. Then we can perform exions test which is where we ex certain joints in the leg, generally separated into the upper limb and lower limb, to try to narrow down the source of pain. If we ex the painful region, horses will generally be sorer and the lameness will worsen after the exion. Once we have established a baseline of how the horse moves we can perform some diagnostics such as nerve blocks, radiographs, or ultrasound. Nerve blocking is where we inject a local anesthetic next to the nerve to numb a certain area of the limb to try to pin point where the pain is coming from. Radiographs are used to look for bony changes and ultrasound is used for assessing soft tissue structures such as tendons or Treatmentligaments. of osteoarthritis is done to slow the progression of the disease and manage the horse’s pain as we cannot reverse the disease process. This is done by giving anti-in ammatories to the horse systemically as well as directly in the joint. Historically, joint injections have been done using steroids but recently there have been newer products on the market allowing veterinarians some options of what to inject into the horse. The Dawson Creek Veterinary Clinic has recently invested in one of these newer products and are very excited to share it with the community. The product is called Pro-Stride, which is an autologous protein solution that can be injected into the joint. The process is quite simple and can be performed stall side.

First, blood is drawn from the horse and transferred into the autologous protein solution separator device and spun down. This will separate out the platelet rich plasma from the platelet poor plasma. The platelet poor plasma is removed and discarded and the platelet rich plasma is transferred into the autologous protein solution concentrator device and spun again. The nal product is the autologous protein solution, which consists of cells, platelets, growth factors and antiin ammatory cytokines, can then be injected into the desired location. The bene ts of this product are that it is a natural product made by the horse’s own body, it highly concentrates the body’s natural anti-in ammatories and growth factors to decrease in ammation and pain as well as assist in healing, it has been proven to be e ective for 9-12 months, it is a product that can be processed in less than 20 minutes and can be injected the within the same appointment as the blood draw, and clinically has been shown to improve the lameness grading, all while having a very low risk pro le. By injecting a natural product, we are removing the risk of post injection laminitis which will allow us to more e ectively treat osteoarthritis in horses that are at high risk of developing laminitis. Pro-Stride is a new and exciting product and will (and already has) greatly bene ted a number of patients. Not only can we use in in horses with osteoarthritis, but it can also be used in our canine counterparts as well. If you have an animal that you feel could bene t from Pro-Stride please contact the Dawson Creek Veterinary Clinic so we can discuss if it is the right treatment plan for you and your animal.

The renewed Council will see 15 new faces joining the ten returning members serving a second term. Together, this second cohort of the Youth Council represents subsectors from across the agriculture and agri-food value chain. The Council’s main task is to ensure that the perspectives of youth in agriculture are well understood, and to help inform on policy, programs, planning and decision-making. The views of Canadian young people are vital in developing government policy and programs that meet the needs of future generations.

Creation of new cohort of the Canadian Agricultural Youth Council

Young Canadians are the future of the agriculture and agri-food sector, and it is important to give them a voice at the table. Today, the Honourable Marie-Claude Bibeau, Minister of Agriculture and Agri-Food, unveiled the names of the members who will form the second cohort of the Canadian Agricultural Youth Council (CAYC). The inaugural meeting of this new group of 25 young people will be held later this summer. The members of this cohort will serve 18-month terms. Young farmers are committed, energetic, passionate and full of ideas on the future of the agriculture and agri-food sector. To build on these strengths, Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada has given the Council the mandate to make recommendations and help find solutions to issues facing young people in the agricultural sector.

The Canadian Agricultural Youth Council is non-partisan, and its members are volunteers. The Canadian Agricultural Youth Council was created in July 2020 with a group of 25 young people representing a diverse mix of people from the agriculture and agri-food sub-sectors, as well as from each province and the North.

24 The Northern Horizon, August 19, 2022

The application process includes a series of questions about each applicant’s experience in the agriculture and agri-food sector, a short essay on a major problem facing youth in the sector, and a proposed way to solve it. The new cohort’s 18-month term begins officially in summer 2022. Fifteen new members have been recruited to take over from just over half of the members of the first Council. Ten members of the first cohort are joined by the new members to form the second cohort of the Canadian Agricultural Youth Council.

A denser bale is naturally higher in crude protein and feed value, while providing improved palatability. It adds up to higher quality feed that can increase average daily gain in your cattle. See all the advantages a New Holland Roll-Belt™ Round Baler provides at betterbaling.com. The denser the bale, the better the feed. © 2021 CNH Industrial America LLC. All rights reserved.
