High crop prices vs low yields ‘Alberta’s 2021 average crop yields were significantly reduced by drought,’ says Neil Blue, provincial crops market analyst with Alberta Agriculture, Forestry and Rural Economic Development. ‘On individual farms, yields varied from almost no yield to average yields.

Moisture preservation with the now widely adopted minimum or no-till practices helped reduce the impact of limited growing season moisture.’

Crop prices this fall are historically high and some crop prices are record high. Some of the increased price has resulted from the dryness in Western Canada and the northwestern United States, while some of the increased price is due to factors beyond North America.

There is a large variation in economic circumstances of Western Canadian crop farmers this fall, depending on their crop yields, whether or not they purchased crop insurance and at what coverage levels, and whether or not they needed to settle shortfalls on contracted production.

little consolation to those producers who experienced a 2021 crop failure, an estimate of potential 2021 crop income using estimated average yields and this fall’s average crop prices provides some interesting information on the financial state of crop farmers.’

‘Using the average yields and prices, there is a significant offset of the below average yields by the high crop prices. Of the 6 highest volumes of production crops in Alberta, only durum is showing a significant drop in gross income when prospects are compared to the fall of 2020,’ says Blue.

‘Most of the current prices for these crops are higher than the 2021 price averages used in the calculation. Depending on their coverage levels, producers with AgriInsurance that are in a crop shortfall position will have crop insurance proceeds to supplement their crop sales income.’

Wonowon 4-H Club Report Hi everyone, I hope you all are as excited about Christmas break as I am!

Weigh-in at Walt Hedges went well: We unloaded the 4-H animals, weighed them, and loaded them back into the trailer.

We have a new member in our 4-H Club this year, I would like to welcome her to our Club.

Welcome Caitlyn Kelly, I hope you enjoyed it.

This is Caitlyn’s first year in 4-H. Sara’s steer weighed 790 pounds; My steer weighed 827 pounds; Rowdy’s steer weighed 788 pounds;

Treasurer, I got Reporter & Secretary, Rowdy is Vice President, and Caitlyn is Safety Officer.

Sara and I are thinking of having a cow/calf project each as well as having our heifers and steers.

A really big thank you to Turner Gus and Oil for sponsoring the Wonowon 4-H Club again, also a big thank you to all the sponsors, buyers, and supporters of 4-H to make 2021 a successful 4-H year.

How our bulls are developed...

We sell all summer born two year old bulls. We believe they are the ideal age and we develop them to maintain soundness and longevity.

• Calves are born mid-May until the first week of July - grass calved - checked, tagged and weighed only once per day. No night checks, cameras or calving barn. (with this system problems eliminate themselves.)

• We wean in November, bull calves are backgrounded in big groups till spring on a silage based growing ration.

• By spring our bulls are well grown out but not fleshy... just perfect to take advantage of our grass.

• Bulls are sorted by breed and size into groups of 30-50 bulls.

• Bulls go to our management intensive grassing paddocks from late May or June until late October.

• Water is provided by solar systems or surface piped fresh water.

• We move bulls to fresh grass every two days all summer long.

• The pasture is good quality, everyday, it ensures they grow well all summer. A real bonus here is that they are used to a man on foot and constant checking.

• As summer progresses we supplement the bulls with a low energy, high protein pellet made specifically to our specs and made of pea and lentil hulls. No starch, high fibre with added minerals and vitamins. (about the nutrient content of good alfalfa hay) • In late fall the bulls are brought to our bull lots and placed on our silage based bull development TMR (total mixed ration.) This is ideal because every mouthful the bull takes he has the right proportion of all nutrients, no bingeing on just grain. No barley or coarse grain is fed, just our bull development pellets.

• Our rations and protocols have been developed over years of experience to bring you the best, most durable bulls possible.

Lakeshore 4-H Club Report Hey everyone, Philip Pugh here from the Lakeshore 4-H Club.

It’s been a rollercoaster start here with Lakeshore 4-H Club. Our club had decided at the beginning of this 4-H year that we would take a year off, however, we’ve now decided to give it a go!

This year we have seven steers weighed in so far, and we will have five swine projects and a lamb as well. We weighed in our steers on Dec. 4 and the calves are off to a great start.

Keep an eye out for our fundraiser in May again! Thank you to everyone who supports 4-H.

Fund helps BC farmers with emergency hay, forage Commercial livestock producers in British Columbia affected by the recent floods are receiving support to buy immediate emergency supplies of forage food to keep their animals fed and healthy.

“B.C. livestock producers are resilient by nature, but we recognize what a challenging year it’s been for them as they’ve had to recover from the heat dome, wildfires and now floods,” said Lana Popham, Minister of Agriculture, Food and Fisheries. “This program will help ensure livestock producers in B.C. can take care of their animals with

“With the devastation that the livestock sector has experienced this year, it is critical for producers to have the required feed they need to get through this challenging time and maintain livestock health,” said Garth Healey, Fraser Valley director, B.C. Forage Council. “We are pleased that the Province is providing the funding for this much-needed program and that the B.C. Forage Council can contribute to the emergency response in a meaningful way.”

Livestock producers in flooded areas have lost or had to use hay they had stored for the winter due to the emergency.

“Livestock producers in the Interior have endured a very stressful summer with first the fires and then the floods, so it is extremely important to us to work together with government to address the needs of the ranchers and farmers who have been hit hard by these events,” said Kevin Boon, general manager, BC Cattlemen’s Association. “The fires showed us the importance of getting feed to producers whose animals have been cut off from their normal feed supplies as soon as possible. Animal welfare is a top priority for our ranchers, and we welcome the adoption of the emergency feed program for the floods so that we can ensure that the livestock’s needs are looked after.”

Forage Council to deliver this emergency program with the shared goal of assisting livestock producers to resume operations. enough hay and forage to fill an immediate need.”

The flooding affected a significant number of commercial livestock operations in the Fraser Valley and Interior regions of B.C. Many operations had their hay and forage supply already reduced by events in the summer of 2021, including the heat dome and wildfires. The Emergency Flood Forage Program is providing up to $1 million in funding from Emergency Management BC to help fill the immediate need of forage.

Hay will be purchased by the service providers on a per-farm basis, following application review, and delivered to farms.

The program’s intent is to fill an urgent need for hay and forage on affected commercial livestock operations.

Considering the right time for manure or compost application Timing of manure or compost application ‘Deciding on the ‘right’ time (one of the 4Rs of nutrient stewardship) for application will depend on the situation and will be driven by agronomic, economic, environmental or neighbour considerations,’ says Trevor Wallace, nutrient management specialist with Alberta Agriculture, Forestry and Rural Economic Development.

The ‘right’ or optimal time for application in a field depends on: operational factors such as cropping plans, past nutrient applications, manure storage capacity and regulatory requirements site-specific factors such as soil conditions and soil nutrient level environmental conditions such as the season, weather and runoff risk potential, and social factors such as neighbours and local events ‘To maximize nutrient use efficiency and reduce the risk of nutrient loss, it is best to apply the nutrient source as close to crop needs as possible. This ensures there is

adequate time for nutrient release and plant uptake.’

While spring application may be ideal for annual crops, it is not always achievable. In Alberta, the option for spring application is limited by our short growing season. Applying in the spring adds to an already busy season and can delay seeding if manure application is hampered by road restrictions, wet soils or equipment availability. Thus more often manure is applied later in the year, into the fall, when soils are generally drier and more time is available; but the risk for nutrient loss is greater because crops are not actively taking up nutrients and the absence of ground cover increases the risk of runoff potential.

‘When possible, apply manure or compost in the late summer or early fall. This allows manure nutrients to infiltrate the soil and stabilize with the soil. The later the manure is applied, the greater the risk of nutrient loss via snowmelt and spring runoff. The risk of nutrient loss from fall applied manure and compost can be reduced by incorporation or injection as well as ensuring application setbacks are followed.’

Several operational changes can be made to widen the window of opportunity for manure or compost application. Through the adoption of new practices, crops or technologies or by working with neighbours, an operation may find opportunities to expand in-season manure application windows.

‘Post seeding or in-crop application of manure or compost are additional windows for manure application. Research is showing that liquid manure dragline application can be done until a corn crop reaches the V-4 leaf stage without harming the corn crop stand.

To find out more about this research, check out this presentation by Glen Arnold from Ohio State University. Solid/liquid separation technology can be used to separate solids, allowing the liquid portion of the manure to be applied through irrigation systems into growing crops.’

Forages or winter cereals can provide

additional in-season windows for application as they capture readily available nutrients, reducing the risk of nutrient loss and spreading out the workload.

The least optimal time for manure application is on frozen or snow-covered ground. The risk of nutrient loss is much greater as infiltration is limited and plants are not growing to utilize applied nutrients. This is why new or expanding confined feeding operations and those operations modifying their facilities are required to have a minimum 9 months of manure storage to help eliminate the need for winter spreading. In addition, confined feeding operators must obtain permission from the Natural Resources Conservation Board (NRCB) before applying.

‘A full or imminently full manure or compost storage may force an emergency application on frozen or snow-covered ground. If it appears you may have to spread manure on frozen or snow-covered ground, please contact the NRCB field office nearest you to ensure that you are complying with the regulations and minimizing environmental risks and neighbour conflicts. Understanding the trade-offs associated with decisions about timing of application is key to ensuring producers are getting the most beneficial return from available manure or compost resources, while minimizing potential environmental impacts and neighbour conflicts.

‘Remember no matter what time of year, plan to minimize risks and conflicts, notify the appropriate authorities if required to do so, and ensure you follow manure spreading requirements,’ says Wallace.

Auditor General’s report on Protecting Canada’s Food System Minister of Agriculture and Agri-Food, Marie-Claude Bibeau, the Minister of Fisheries, Oceans and the Canadian Coast Guard, Joyce Murray, and the Minister of Northern Affairs, Daniel Vandal today issued the following statement in response to the Auditor General’s report on Protecting Canada’s Food System: “We welcome the Auditor General’s report on Protecting Canada’s Food System. We recognize the importance of the findings and accept the recommendations.

Since the very beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic, the Government of Canada has worked tirelessly to safeguard the health and well-being of Canadians. At a time when we faced disruptions to food processing and production, and unemployment and wage losses led to increased risks of food insecurity, we took quick and decisive actions to protect Canada’s food supply.

The Auditor General’s report highlights the collaboration that is required to protect and strengthen Canada’s food supply. As the

report notes, we drew on a strong foundation of existing programs and mechanisms to create new emergency food programs quickly, and we engaged broadly with stakeholders across the food sector.

To make sure Canadians had stable access to food, we rolled out programs to address issues across the food supply chain, from processing to waste management. We put measures in place to keep workers safe, provided funding to get food on the tables of people facing food insecurity, prevented good food from going to waste, and increased funding to make food and other essential items more accessible and affordable for residents of isolated northern communities.

The government further supported locally-led, innovative projects to ensure individuals and families had access to healthy and affordable food in their communities.

Food systems are essential for the health and well-being of Canadians and the strength of our economy. We are committed to working across all levels of government and with

stakeholders to better plan and prepare for future crises affecting the food system.

The Government of Canada is committed to fairness, accountability, and performance measurement in program design and implementation. We also recognize the importance of collecting and reporting on data on Gender-Based Analysis Plus (GBA+) and sustainable development objectives in government initiatives, to ensure that we respond to the needs of diverse groups of Canadians, and take into account the social, economic, and environmental dimensions of sustainable development.

As we move ahead in our efforts to strengthen the food supply chain, we will grow from the valuable lessons that we have learned during the pandemic. We will continue to work collaboratively so that all people in Canada are able to access a sufficient amount of safe, nutritious, and culturally diverse food, and so that Canada’s food system is resilient and innovative, sustains our environment, and supports our economy.”

Feeding Cattle in Cold Temperatures The current cold snap occurring across the province is a concern for humans and livestock. Reducing the stress on cattle created by cold temperatures is a management concern.

Adjust the current rations to meet requirements. Cattle produce heat when digesting feed. Cattle can stay warm down to -20 C if they are protected from the wind and have a dry haircoat. Larger animals eat more feed, produce more heat than a 500 pound weaned calf. Thus, the smaller animals are more at risk to suffer from cold stress. Newborn calves are at the highest risk of succumbing to the cold.

Cattle consume more feed in cold weather. This is their defense mechanism to produce more heat. Having animals consume more straw in the ration or off the bedding pack is not advisable. Straw is a low protein, low energy, high fibre feed that takes more time for the animals to digest compared to hay, silage or grain. It is difficult for bacteria to digest the Neutral Detergent Fibre (NDF). Consuming extra straw reduces the total protein content in the ration which slows bacteria repopulation which is needed to digest the fibre. When NDF exceeds 60% in the ration, feed intake may drop two, three or four pounds a day. This reduces total nutrient intake which can cause the animals to drop condition.

Providing extra hay or silage maintains protein content in the ration. Grain is a high energy feed that is the most beneficial when temperature drops below -20 C. At -30 C, increase grain intake by an extra two lb. of grain per head per day over and above what was previously being fed at -20 C. If temperatures drop to -40 C, four lb. of extra grain per head per day needs to be added.

Thin animals are more prone to cold stress than those in good shape. They do not have the fat layer that provides insulation. The recommended two to four pounds of additional grain during the cold weather might have to be stepped up to six or seven pounds to maintain body weight.

Preventing weight loss during cold stress is key to having mature cows develop a strong calf and adequate colostrum to prevent problems at calving. Thin cows also have more difficulty conceiving a calf at breeding season.

Horsemanship, a look in the mirror

Look in the mirror. That’s where it’s all at.

Know that what you see is what you get and what you get is fantastic.

When it comes to playing with horses, and really about anything else I can think of, we are really working with ourselves. Any trouble we may be having as we work with our horses is something to be excited about because it’s an opportunity to learn. Where we struggle is where we grow, stretch, and become more.

Too often it seems that people look at struggle or being uncomfortable as a bad thing. It is actually a good thing, something to maybe be grateful for. The only way to never have troubles or stress is to be dead.

Learning is an ongoing series of feelings.

You know when you’re trying to accomplish something with your horse and it’s difficult you’re in a major learning curve, yippee!!!

You’re progressing and moving forward.

We can choose to be excited and fascinated or frustrated, mad, and sad.

Horsemanship is a process of discoveries and having a program can help you read a horse and develop the skills like feel and timing. I often ask people, “What are the two things that horses love more than anything in the world?” You can’t buy them. You’re not born with them. Nobody can give them to you.

But you can develop them. Those two things are feel and timing.

You have to work at it but it can be very fun, fulfilling and rewarding if you view it that way.

We don’t know what we don’t know which is just fine. There is no way to know until we get some guidance from someone or stumble across it on our own. Then we know but there

will still be a lot of other things we don’t know Once we discover something we don’t know then you can start the process of trying to be able to actually do it.

I have people that really would like some help with the horsemanship skills but are so worried that someone might see them learning so they never get the help that they so badly want. Other people do show up but say things like, “I can’t,” or, “This doesn’t’t’t work and that doesn’t’t work,” or “I’m totally messing up everything,” meanwhile I just watched them do the exact thing they think they can’t do. Other times the person is so close to getting a major breakthrough but won’t stick with it.

They might be two tries away or 1 minute from getting something accomplished but they give up just before it happens. Then they start again and give up again just before it happens. They might spend hours or weeks doing the same thing but stopping 30 seconds too early. If we haven’t accomplished some of these things often, we don’t know that many are just right there – a breath away.

If we are learning, we might not know that we just got something amazing because we are looking for something else. I like to tease folks when they say, “I can’t go to a clinic because I don’t like people watching me.” I tease them and ask them why they think they are so important that everyone came to watch them.

Other folks say, “I can’t do anything right.”

That’s obviously not true so why even say it?

It only causes your brain to try and prove you right and look for reasons to backup what

you said. Even if that was true, which it is not, then fantastic: you’Ive got lots of things to learn and just think how amazing your world will be as you start doing things right.

I’ve started over 2000 colts and I’m still learning. That’s why I’m so passionate about what I do because thanks to the horse I get to always discover more ways to improve and grow. “Learning” is moving forward, being progressive, and strengthening the mind and body, which is something to be admired. Our horses are thrilled when we go out and learn and improve our skills because they benefit from it. We need to always remind ourselves that the only way to not make any mistakes is to not do anything. The more forward and progressive you are, the more you might stumble.

Support yourself in your learning with positive thoughts and comments. Know that hiding from or staying away from difficulties doesn’t’t make them go away. The more we learn, the more exhilarating it becomes and our horses become. All of a sudden there are great horses everywhere. Be your own best and have fun doing it.

Government of Canada invests in canola exports, growth and diversification Canada’s canola industry relies on international markets, with about 90% of the canola grown in Canada being exported. The Government of Canada is working to ensure canola producers benefit from stable and diverse market access for our high-quality canola products.

Today, the Minister of Agriculture and Agri-Food, the Honourable Marie-Claude Bibeau, announced an investment of more than $1.8 million to Canola Council of Canada (CCC) under the AgriMarketing Program to boost exports and ensure the sector can take full advantage of market access opportunities around the world.

The CCC will use this funding to continue strengthening its promotion of the benefits of canola products in Asia and North America. It is expected that

the project will allow for more educational reach on the benefits of canola products and the ability to reach potential new markets in Asia.

Today’s investment will help the canola industry towards the CCC’s goal of reaching 26 million tonnes of production of canola by 2025. This supports the Government of Canada’s own objective of expanding agri-food exports to $75 billion by 2025 and aligns with Canada’s $1.1 billion trade diversification strategy to help Canadian businesses access new markets.

This investment builds on two previous AgriMarketing canola announcements, totaling almost $13 million, with a continued focus on promoting the health benefits of canola and the positive impacts of using canola oil, meal and seed. The CCC also aims to

Nitrogen prices and exports ‘With 5 months before 2022 planting begins, Alberta farmers have a few months for the fertilizer situation to sort itself out,’ says Ryan Furtas, market analyst with Alberta Agriculture, Forestry and Rural Economic Development. ‘However, the most likely scenario for fertilizers is that the current high prices will continue throughout the winter and spring months of 2022.’

Canadian and Alberta agriculture is highly dependent on nitrogen-based fertilizers.

Nitrogen production and products, namely ammonia and urea, are mainly produced at Alberta locations. Alberta producers supply the large demand from the prairie provinces as well as the rest of Canada. The lone export destination of Canadianproduced ammonia and urea is the United States. It is through the U.S. that Canadian producers are tied to the international price for nitrogen.

Figure 1 shows nitrogen fertilizer shipments to the U.S. from Canada. Fertilizer shipments are reported by quarter according to the fertilizer year that runs from July to June. Figure 1 also provides yearly fertilizer shipments to the United States.

‘Canadian exports of ammonia (NH3) averaged 956,000 metric tonnes (mt) and 996,000 mt for the past 5 and 10 years respectively.

Of note, 2019/20 and 2020/21 ammonia exports decreased by

Furtas notes Canadian shipments of urea to the U.S. have sharply declined. The 10-year average shows approximately 1,000,000 mt of urea exported to the U.S., whereas the 5-year average comes in at 580,000 mt. In the past couple of years, export urea tonnage to the U.S. totaled 450,000 mt, which is a 20% decrease in exports over the 5-year average and a 55% decrease over the 10-year average.

In the past 5 years, the U.S. has added 5 million tonnes to the country’s production capacity base. This has made the U.S. less reliant on imports of both ammonia and especially urea from Canadian sources.

‘It is likely that Canadian exports increase in 2021/22, since Canadian nitrogen production facilities will be producing as much as possible to take advantage of the high priced demand,’ says Furtas.

‘Even though shipments to the U.S. have increased during the first quarter of the fertilizer year, it is worth noting that U.S. farmers throughout the northern plains, eastern sections and majority of the corn belt just finished a productive fall nitrogen (ammonia) application season.

This is a small slice of good news for Alberta producers as it lessens later demand for nitrogen and allows inventories to rebuild for the upcoming spring.’

Third round of compensation now available for Cdn. dairy farmers Minister of Agriculture and Agri-Food, the Honourable Marie-Claude Bibeau, announced that the third payment under the Dairy Direct Payment Program (DDPP) is now available to producers. The owner of a farm with 80 dairy cows will be awarded compensation in the form of a direct payment of approximately $38,000 each year.

Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada has mailed letters to all eligible dairy producers with directions on how to access the payment.

Based on their milk quota, dairy farmers will receive compensation payments totaling up to $469 million for this fiscal year. To receive their payment, producers must register through the Canadian Dairy Commission prior to March 31, 2022. Another $468 million will be available in 2022-2023.

The Government of Canada continues to deliver on its commitment to provide $1.75 billion to dairy producers for market access concessions made under the CanadaEuropean Union Comprehensive Economic and Trade Agreement (CETA) and the Comprehensive and Progressive Agreement for Trans-Pacific Partnership (CPTPP).

Payments are being made on an accelerated schedule of four years instead of eight, with all payments set to be made by 2023.

Earlier this year, the Government also launched compensation programs designed to help drive innovation and market development for Canada’s 4,800 chicken, egg, broiler hatching egg and turkey producers, totaling

$691 million over ten years. The Poultry and Egg On-Farm Investment Program will provide nearly $647 million to support poultry and egg farmers through on-farm investments. The Market Development Program for Turkey and Chicken will provide over $44 million to help increase domestic demand and consumption of Canadian turkey and chicken products through industry-led promotional activities.

These programs respond directly to requests from producer associations and provide full and fair compensation for market impacts from the CPTPP. To help processors of all supply-managed agricultural products adapt to CETA and CPTPP, Budget 2021 proposed a further $292.5 million for a Processor Investment Fund to support private investment in processing plants. Further program details are expected to be available in the coming months.

Within the next year, the Government of Canada is also committed to working with supply-managed sectors to determine full and fair compensation for the impacts of the Canada-United States-Mexico Agreement (CUSMA).

Despite many challenges, including the COVID-19 pandemic and impacts of severe weather conditions across the country, these farmers continue to demonstrate their commitment to

providing high-quality products and helping to ensure a strong Canadian economy and agriculture sector.

The Canadian dairy sector is a vital pillar of rural communities and a key driver of the economy. There are 9,952 dairy farms in Canada supporting approximately 19,000 direct jobs. The demand for Canadian dairy remains strong, and has led to a 10% increase in raw milk production in the last five years, with over $7 billion in farm cash receipts in 2020.

Under the Dairy Direct Payment Program, dairy farmers will receive up to $1.75 billion in direct payments over the course of four years.

Payments are delivered by the Canadian Dairy Commission (CDC).

Up to $345 million and $468 million in direct payments was made available in 2019-20 and 2020-21, respectively.

There is $469 million currently available for year three, and another $468 million will be available in 2022-23.

Under the program, eligible recipients are producers of cow’s milk with a valid dairy quota license registered with a provincial milk marketing board or agency as of October 31 of each year.

Canada now has trade agreements with two-thirds of the world’s economy and is the only G7 country to have trade agreements with every other G7 country.

Agricultural Land Reserve (ALR) is for farming and ranching in British Columbia, not for dumping construction waste or building mega-mansions.

Reappointments to the Canada Agricultural Review Tribunal Names announced the reappointment of Patricia Farnese and Marthanne Robson to the Canada Agricultural Review Tribunal.

In 2016, the Government of Canada implemented an open, transparent and merit-based process for selecting Governor in Council appointees. Appointees play a fundamental role in Canada’s democracy by serving on commissions, boards, Crown corporations, agencies and tribunals across the country.

“The Canada Agricultural Review Tribunal acts to balance our rights while protecting the health and well-being of consumers and enhancing the economic vibrancy of Canadian agriculture. Ms. Robson has been reappointed for a three-year term, effective December 14, 2021.

She has been a member of the Canadian Agricultural Review Tribunal since 2017 and was previously vice-chair of the Ontario Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs Appeal Tribunal from 2006 to 2016. Ms. Robson obtained her common law degree (LL.B.) from the University of Ottawa, is currently a member of the Law Society of Ontario, and was a member of the Barreau du Québec for 20 years. Ms. Robson is very active in her community as a volunteer and is a co-founder and partner of the Ethical Investors Group of Montréal.

Minister Bibeau announces an extra $30 million to help vulnerable people in Canada access food

Minister of Agriculture and Agri-Food, the Honourable Marie-Claude Bibeau, announced a $30-million top-up for the Emergency Food Security Fund, bringing total funding under the Fund to $330 million. This additional investment is aimed at addressing the increased demand and fewer resources faced by food banks and local food organizations, as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic. Food insecurity rates increased over the pandemic, with one in seven Canadian households who have experienced food insecurity over a onemonth period during the pandemic.

Funding will be divided between Food Banks Canada, Second Harvest, Breakfast Club of Canada, Community Food Centres Canada, The Salvation Army, and La Tablée des Chefs, who in turn will continue their work to distribute it to thousands of local food organizations across Canada. Local organizations will use the funding to purchase and distribute food and other basic necessities to meet the emergency needs of the most vulnerable people. They may also hire temporary help to cope with volunteer shortages and adapt operations to help keep workers, volunteers and recipients safe.

Since it was launched in the opening months of the pandemic, the Emergency Food Security Fund has supported more than 5,000 local food initiatives across Canada, with over 1,100 initiatives directly supporting Indigenous organizations and communities.

The Fund has helped to serve healthy, nutritious and culturally diverse meals to millions of people in Canada.

Emergency Food Security Fund recipients will use a portion of the funds to purchase surplus Prince Edward Island potatoes and redistribute them to local food serving organizations who have expressed the need for this commodity.

The Government of Canada is committed to improving access to safe and nutritious food for vulnerable people in Canada, part of the vision of a Food Policy for Canada launched in 2019.

“Canada’s food banks and local food organizations have done tremendous work over the past year, as the pandemic continues to worsen food insecurity across Canada. Our Government is committed to making sure

they receive our support so they can continue to put more food on the table for vulnerable Canadians. This extra $30-million investment will help these six vital organizations with established distribution networks to continue to improve access to food for Canadians in need, while also supporting PEI farmers by redirecting surplus potatoes to local foodserving organizations who need them,” said Marie-Claude Bibeau, Minister of Agriculture and Agri-Food.

“We are grateful for the continued support of the Government of Canada. These funds will help food banks from coast to coast to coast provide healthy, nutritious food as the need for their services rises across the country,” added David Armour, Interim CEO, Food Banks Canada.

“Thanks to the support of Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada, Second Harvest will be able to provide even more funding to community food programs supporting vulnerable

This additional emergency funding will help the nearly 2 million children in our country who risk going to school hungry every morning.
