Next year marks the 100th anniversary of the Dawson Creek Exhibition and Stampede, which first took place in 1922 at the Willowbrook Creek. To commemorate the occasion, the exhibition executive is making a book celebrating the history of the event, with the hope of including pictures, results, and memorabilia from each year the event took place.

Though quite a lot of information has been gathered, there are a few stretches of time in which the executive has no or little info, including 1939-50, a number of years in the 1970s and 80s, and from 1923-28. “A lot of First Nations people from Moberly Lake, Doig, and Upper Halfway used to come, and we want to include the First Nations people in the book. They used to come with their wagons and horses, and rode bucking horses and bulls.

That’s why our camping spot is called the Apache Camping Area, because that is where they used to come and set up camp.”

The exhibition used to have four 4H queens or princes each year, and they would like to include as many of those names in the book as possible, as well as people who were named the farm family of the year. Patterson and Leer are asking people to send in their memorabilia and photos by August or September, and will have 200 copies of the book available for sale at the 2022 rodeo, August 10 to 14, with more available online.

Wildfire assessments for rural residents Rural residents around Fort St. John are now able to book a free property assessment to prepare and protect their homes against a wildfire.

The PRRD says its new regional FireSmart program is underway to identify high-risk properties and neighbourhoods, and help residents understand how they can reduce the risk of damage or loss of property from wildfire.

“The Peace region is particularly vulnerable to wildfires, which often happen earlier and last longer here,” Board Chair Brad Sperling said in a release. “Taking a proactive approach is shown to reduce the risk of losses in the most extreme wildfire conditions.”

Residents in throughout the PRRD can book appointments online. Included is a one-hour consultation with a local wildfire professional from Mammoth Forestry of Fort St. John.

The PRRD says small changes — such as cleaning roofs and gutters, trimming branches and moving firewood away from a property, and keeping grass short — can go a long way to making sure a home is still standing if a wildfire comes near the property.

Earlier in the Legislative session in Victoria, the NDP government introduced a bill entitled the Electoral Boundaries Commission Amendment Act, 2021. As harmless as this bill sounds, it has been one of the more contentious and hotly-debated bills of the spring session, and for good reason. This bill, which just passed (our whole caucus opposed it) has the potential to reduce rural representation and the rural voice in Victoria while increasing representation in more urban areas like Vancouver.

At the end of the day, equality also means that our rural voices deserve the same strength and representation as our urban ones. The ability for MLAs to connect with constituents is vital to an effective democracy, and as such, neither the number of constituents, nor the size of an electoral district, should serve as a barrier to British Columbians having access to the representation they need and deserve. This will be a topic of discussion over the coming months and I encourage you to let me know your thoughts.

Look, it’s the Beatton 4H Club Report!

Hi it’s Harlan again with the mid-June report on the Beatton Community 4-H Club.

It’s been pretty busy with all the club things coming up in the club meetings. With the restriction on social gatherings loosening, we have been able to do a few more things in person. We were just able to do our first in-person meeting in months. It was still fun and we talked about a lot of things.

We started planning Achievement Days in our last meeting that was at the Light Horse Arena. The Light Horse Association let us use their arena, and in return we cleaned the arena and mowed the lawns.

We also vaccinated our horses at the end of May. Thank you to North Peace Veterinary Clinic for sponsoring the vaccines for all the club members horses. All the horses got vaccinated with a five-way vaccine that includes protection against tetanus and eastern and western influenzas.

This year, since the Covid restrictions haven’t totally lifted, we are doing a private Achievement Days, possibly at one of our 4-H leaders’ houses in Cecil Lake. If it happens to rain the weekend of Achievement Days then we will probably see if we can use an indoor arena like the Light Horse Arena. We are taking extra precautions to make sure that we meet all of the Covid-19 guide-lines and rules.

The Horse Ranch: assessments & tasksheets The Stages & Assessment Program is a system for the student to receive feedback on their horsemanship. The clinics and camps give you the concepts, theories and exercises that will help you get the tasks done in the Stages Program. The tasks in this program are designed to be: • A diagnostic tool in which you can see where you are at in your horsemanship, and receive help and feedback in key areas.

• A check and balance to make sure you have certain aspects of your horsemanship solid enough to build on as you progress.

• A guide to help you know what maximum stage of clinic or camp you should participate in. We believe there is no minimum stage of clinic. You can never be too good at the lower stages.

As a student, your ability to hear and interpret with higher understanding of all that is said will be constantly changing.

You will never stop learning.

Rat basics: they can make solid pets, you know

Rats make wonderful household pets. They are affectionate, highly intelligent and can be easily trained.

They form strong bonds with their human owners as well as with other rats they are housed with. Rats live on average 1-3 years. They are highly sociable creatures and do best when housed in small groups (3-4 rats has been shown to be the ideal number). Providing rats with time out of the cage in a safe space allows them to exercise and provides mental stimulation to keep your rat happy. When caging rats in groups, do not house intact males and females together as they will breed. A litter can be anywhere from 8-18 pups and females can have up to 7 litters per year! Best to keep males and females separate.

Housing: Cage sizing for a single rat is a minimum of eight cubic feet and should be larger when there are multiple rats in one cage. Multiple levels should be provided and there should be a solid base with lots of ventilation.

Bedding should consist of soft blankets on the base of the cage with multiple sleeping areas including sleeping boxes and hammocks to allow your rat to choose a preferred area. Bedding should be washed weekly to keep the cage clean and minimize odor. Rats are easy to train to use a litter box which should be present in the bottom of the kennel. It is important to use a paper based litter and avoid wood based or scented litters as rats are very sensitive to developing respiratory disease. Litter should be changed daily.

Feeding: Rats are omnivores therefore they can eat a number of different foods. The base diet should be a high quality pelleted food which is often referred to as a “rat block”. This should make up 80-90% of the diet. They should not contain any coloured pellets, nuts, dried fruits or vegetables, or seed bits.

Diets that contain these are often high in fat which can lead to different health problems. The diet can be supplemented with healthy treats. These should always be started off in small amounts

to avoid any adverse gastrointestinal reactions to the introduction of a new food. Healthy food options are: cooked beans, peas, corn, dry or cooked pasta, squash, carrots, green leafy vegetables, fresh fruits and veggies. Rats are sensitive to excessive proteins so high-protein snacks should be kept to a minimum. These types of treats should be given on occasion and they include nuts, lean meats, and eggs.

Porphyrins: rats can secrete porphyrins from the Harderian glands behind the eyes which are red in colour. This is often mistaken for blood around the eyes and nose. This is a normal secretion that rats will generally clean prior to owners seeing it. When they are stressed or have an underlying disease these secretions may become visible to owners. If you notice this, assess the housing and feeding and adjust if your rat is stressed. Monitor closely for any abnormal signs and bring in for a vet check if he/she is sick.

Common diseases: 1) Mammary tumors: these tumors can develop in both males and females.

They are generally found under the chin, neck, or abdomen. Most commonly they are benign tumors meaning they do not spread to other parts of the body but they can grow quite quickly and become very large tumors. These should be addressed and surgically removed as they do not allow a good quality of life. Restricting caloric intake can help reduce the occurrence of these tumors.

2) Pituitary tumors: this is common in our geriatric patients. Clinically you will see neurological abnormalities such as a wide based stance, head tilt, an uncoordinated gait or stumbling and possibly blindness.

3) Respiratory disease: this disease is often multi-factorial and can have environmental and bacterial components.

It can be spread from rat to rat through direct contact or through the air depending on the specific cause. Clinically you may see coughing or sneezing, an increased respiration rate, mild difficulty breathing, nasal discharge, weight loss, porphyrin staining, and a

hunched stance. In more severe cases you may see open mouth breathing and possibly death. This disease generally requires lifelong therapy to control the disease. Treatment is aimed at decreasing the inflammation of the lungs and clearing up any bacterial infection. Environmental adjustments are extremely important to manage this disease. Using dust free bedding/litter, frequent changing of the litter and bedding to reduce ammonia levels, and providing good ventilation are of utmost importance.

4) Lice and fur mites: this can be quite common in rats and is transmissible from rat to rat. You will generally see scratching and fur loss. Diagnosis is quite difficult due to many false negatives. A dewormer designed for ectoparasites is highly effective to treat these. Any cage mates or other rats in contact should also be treated.

Overall, rats make incredible pets and bond really well with their human owners. They are loving creatures who rarely bite and are generally calm, quiet, and easy to care for as long as they are provided with good quality care.

Tips for mare and foal care Just as with humans, mom and baby will need plenty of rest and a post foaling examination.  



Healthy normal breathing, standing and nursing within 2 hours of delivery. Both should have a temperature between 99 -101.5. Anything over 101.5 should be discussed with your vet.

Once the mare stands, the placenta is usually passed within a few minutes to a couple of hours. If the mare is stepping on the placenta or it seems to bother her, tie it up on itself with a piece of twine. Under no circumstance should you attempt to cut it off or pull it out. If the placenta is retained for more than three hours, notify your veterinarian.

If the foal won't suck you can collect some colostrum from the mare and give it by bottle. Or your vet can put it directly into the foal's stomach using a tube. Colostrum substitutes are available if the mare doesn't have any milk. The foal's intestines can only absorb colostrum for the first 24 hours or so!

2021 DC Exhibition & Stampede still up in air The status of year’s edition of the Dawson Creek Exhibition and Stampede is still up in the air.

DC Exhibition president Connie Patterson says they are holding out hope the announcement will bring the executive clarity and will allow them to hold the rodeo with enough people in the stands and grounds to make it worthwhile.

Planned for August 11 to 15, with B.C. set to advance to Phase 3 of its reopening plan in July, and the next PHO announcement regarding restrictions comes July 2.

“If we get the go-ahead, we’ll have six weeks to plan and get ready as much as we can. But we have to be able to have people in the stands if we’re going to do it,” says Patterson.

Regardless of this year, the exhibition’s spring rodeo will return next March at the Ovintiv Events Centre.

“We used to have a junior rodeo take place during the stampede as well, but that stopped 18 years ago. Our young cowboys and cowgirls aren’t professing as they should and they need the chance to compete at an event like this. They will participate in the spring rodeo along with the professional riders, and both will be a part of the August rodeo as well,” says Patterson.

In the meantime, exhibition staff and executive members have been busy fixing up the grounds, with several old buildings having been torn down and new ones put up in their place. The livestock arena is being added on to to make it regulation size, with a smaller, 300-person place to hold events and teach kids about rodeo and livestock being built as well. sports@ahnfsj.ca

COW FEEDING PROGRAM IMPACTS FETAL DEVELOPMENT DURING MID PREGNANCY

The placenta is fully developed by the third month of pregnancy. At four months of gestation, a calf has developed to the size of a small cat. Nutritional requirements to maintain the pregnancy are still relatively low, but there are significant fetal developments during mid pregnancy.

Muscle development occurs at two different stages of pregnancy. Muscle fibres are initially developed in mid pregnancy. Genetics provides the “code” as to how much muscle the animal will have, but the total muscle mass is influenced and possibly limited by the amount of protein in the ration. Comparing cows that grazed a low quality pasture (6 to 7% protein) for 60 days during mid pregnancy versus a higher quality pasture (11% protein) found that cows on the low protein pasture delivered a calf that was 4 pounds lighter than the higher quality pasture. Researchers evaluated the two groups of calves and found that weaning weights for the low protein pasture were 30 pounds and 48 pounds lighter at slaughter compared to calves from the “higher protein pasture”.

Heifers born to the cows that grazed lower quality pasture had smaller ovaries and luteal tissue. Luteal tissue produces progesterone which is needed to maintain pregnancy. Long et al., (2012) speculated that the ability of the heifer to conceive the first calf could be reduced because of the reduced organ size.

Blue-green algae is actually cyanobacteria, and can produce toxins that can be very dangerous,’ says Shawn Elgert, agricultural water engineer with Alberta Agriculture and Forestry (AF).

‘It can cause organ damage or even death if ingested by livestock or pets.’

‘If you are trying to determine a cause of poisoning, there are other potential toxins on the farm that can also cause harm to cattle such as water hemlock, or batteries.

You may need to talk to a veterinarian for assistance in determining the cause.’

Elgert says the first and most important step is to identify the type of growth.

‘Blue-green algae can look like blue-green scum, pea soup or grass clippings suspended in the water. You should start watching for it when the temperatures increase.’

If blue-green algae is suspected in a dugout, it is best to be cautious, says Elgert.

‘You should contact a water specialist to diagnose the growth to determine if it is potentially a toxic growth.

You should also remove your livestock from the water source in the interim and prevent them from accessing it. One rule of thumb is that if you can grab it as a solid mass in your hand, it is not blue-green algae.’

If blue-green algae is present, the dugout can be treated using a copper product registered for use in farm dugouts. ‘Once you treat it, consumption should be restricted for up to a month.

The use of copper will break the cells open and release the toxins if present into the water all at once. It is important that you stop using the water during this time so the toxins can degrade. You can follow up with aluminum sulfate and/or hydrated lime treatments afterwards to remove the nutrients from the water to prevent regrowth.’

Elgert says there are also preventative measures that can be taken to try to avoid the problem. ‘Temperature is an important factor in the growth of blue-green al-

gae, so a deeper dugout with slopes that are not too flat would help make the dugout water cooler.’

Nutrients are required for growth of blue-green algae.

‘We have information on how to reduce nutrients from entering the dugout in our Quality Farm Dugouts manual. Buffer strips, grassed waterways, culvert controls and off-source watering systems are examples of how you can reduce nutrients.’

Dugouts should not be built in the waterway, as sediments can bring more nutrients into the dugout and depth can be lost quickly, adds Elgert.

‘Aeration of the dugout can also help improve the water quality. A dye packet can also be thrown into the dugout to help prevent photosynthesis from occurring, thereby reducing the growth of blue-green algae. However, one action alone may not be enough to prevent growth.’

Elgert also notes that the wind can push the blue-green algae into highly concentrated pockets where the risk of harm is higher. ‘Since bluegreen algae can rise or fall in the water column, inspection of the dugout should include peering into the deeper part of the water. Always be safe around the dugout by going along with another person and have a rope with a flotation device attached.’

Focus on the farm a priority in COVID-19 recovery For the second consecutive year, the Province is waiving the income requirements normally required for existing B.C. farm operations when qualifying for farm classification.

“The pandemic has been very difficult for everyone, including the thousands of British Columbians who are involved in putting food on our tables,” said Lana Popham, Minister of Agriculture, Food and Fisheries. “Over the past year, the trend of buying B.C. food has grown instinctively in families and communities around our province. By maintaining this change for another year, we are letting B.C. farmers know that we have their back, so they can continue to focus on providing their amazing and delicious products we all enjoy.”

If the Province had not taken action with a regulatory amendment last year, more than 400 farm properties with a history of sub-

threshold income and many developing farms would have been at risk of losing their farm class for 2021. By once again eliminating the income requirement as B.C. recovers from COVID-19, farmers will not have to worry about the possibility of losing their farm classification and having an increase in property taxes in 2022.

“We’re helping farmers maintain their farm status by waiving income requirements for a second straight year,” said Selina Robinson, Minister of Finance. “Our government will continue to be responsive in our targeted COVID-19 supports for people and businesses, so we can build the foundation of a strong recovery.”

To be classified as a farm in B.C., properties must meet certain criteria, including generating a minimum amount of gross income from a qualifying agriculture use based on the size of the parcel of land.

In an ideal world, each canola seed will germinate and grow into a seed-producing plant, but most canola fields will not see a 100 per cent emergence rate. With plant counts and emergence calculations, as well as regional benchmark information from the Canola Counts map, farmers and agronomists can evaluate seed survival rates and adjust seed placement, seeding rates and other plant establishment steps as necessary to improve the return on investment for seed.

The three main crops that Calvin has focused on in the region is, Creeping Red Fescue, Timothy and Bromegrass.

Results so far have shown an improvement in plant height, improved pollination rates and reduced lodging.

Optimal application has been at 2nd node and early heading stages, but research is still being done to solidify the timing of the application dates.

The PGRs used in Creeping Red Fescue are Trinexapac-ethyl (TE) and Chlormequat chloride (CCC). TE is registered under Moddus Syngenta and can also be used on cereal crops. CCC, the manipulator, is distributed by Belchim.

In Timothy and Bromegrass, the manipulator and TE are the same products as used in Creeping Red Fescue.

When the combination is applied, it has been shown reduce lodging.

This is a Wonowon 4H Club report, catch up

Hi everyone, I hope you are all having a great spring !

May 29, 2021: We went to Hedges and helped Rowdy clip her steer. Sara was helping her do the head and I helped her do the belly and getting the mats out. We also picked a banner for our Club Achievement day.

May 30: Sara clipped Big Red, it took a long time because the clippers were getting way to hot way to fast so it took almost 5 hours for Sara to clip him.

May 31: I half clipped Doc, as the day before the clippers were heating up. I didn’t wait as long as Sara did so I fried it. So I had to wait a couple days so we could get the new clippers. After we got the new clippers I finished clipping him.

June 5 Club Achievement Days: Sara and I weighed our steers, then we helped Rowdy weigh Mighty. Big Red weighed over 1300 pounds, Doc weighed over 1200 pounds and Mighty weighed over 1100 pounds. We washed the steers and then let them dry. We groomed them up nice, then did the videos and the still pictures. The steers did awesome and so did Rowdy and it’s her first year in 4-H. She did a great job with Mighty!

Our steers are up for auction at 2 p.m., July 12, 2021 at VJV Dawson. You can look at them here.

Today, the Minister of Indigenous Services, the Honourable Marc Miller, on behalf of the Minister of Agriculture and Agri-Food, the Honourable Marie-Claude Bibeau, announced investments of over $4 million in 16 projects that will help support Indigenous food systems initiatives, provide equitable access to healthy food, and increase participation of under-represented groups in the agriculture and agri-food sector.

Recipients include: 4-C Farms Limited Partnership, which received up to $954,000 to reintroduce grain farming as a viable business and career path and to finalize a business plan so that Cowessess First Nation can expand its farming operation to 2,000 acres; Xaxli’p First Nation, which received up to $88,000 to prepare the community to engage in a number of agricultural activities by conducting a market study, a land capability assessment and an irrigation water source assessment; and Bigstone Cree Nation, which will receive up to $131,000 to identify and plan agribusiness opportunities to participate and succeed in Alberta’s growing agribusiness sector.

Peace River Regional District Notice of Alternative Approval Process Deadline Extension Re: Gotta Go Roadside Facilities Service Establishment Bylaw No. 2440 This notice is to advise electors in a portion of the Peace River Regional District (PRRD) of the use of an alternate approval process to obtain participating area approval for “Gotta Go Roadside Facilities Service Establishment Bylaw No. 2440, 2021”. The purpose of the bylaw is to establish a new service that will enable the PRRD to receive funding in the form of taxation from the service area to construct, operate, and maintain roadside facilities in the PRRD, and to provide grant-in-aid to non-profits and government agencies to assist with capital costs, and operation and maintenance costs, of roadside facilities in the PRRD. The service area is all of Electoral Area B, Hudson’s Hope, Taylor, Chetwynd, and Tumbler Ridge.

Deadline: The PRRD will proceed with this new service unless, by 4:30 pm on July 30, 2021, at least 10% of the eligible electors from the service area advise the PRRD that the service should not proceed unless it is approved through assent voting (referendum). An elector can advise the PRRD of their desire for a referendum to the approve the service by submitting a copy of the approved Elector Response Form to the Corporate Officer on or before 4:30 pm on July 30, 2021. The number of elector responses required to prevent the PRRD from proceeding unless a vote is held is 796.

Elector responses must be submitted to the PRRD using the approved Elector Response Form, which must be completed in full and signed by the elector. Response forms will be accepted by mail, email, fax, or in person, as indicated on the form.

Forms can be obtained from the PRRD website - prrd.bc.ca/administration/elections or during regular business hours from the PRRD offices in Dawson Creek and Fort St. John, and from municipal offices in Hudson’s Hope, Taylor, Chetwynd, and Tumbler Ridge.

A copy of Gotta Go Roadside Facilities Service Establishment Bylaw No. 2440, 2021, and additional information regarding the service, is available until July 30, 2021, on the PRRD website, and at the PRRD offices in Dawson Creek and Fort St. John Monday to Friday, 8:30am to 4:30 pm (Fort. St. John office closed daily from 12 noon – 1 pm) excluding statutory holidays.

Resident electors, and non-resident property electors of the service area (Hudson’s Hope, Taylor, Chetwynd, Tumbler Ridge, and Electoral Area B) are eligible to sign the elector response forms and only one form may be submitted by any elector.

The Agriculture Ministry raised objections and appeared non-supportive during the first application. But now it has reversed course and is endorsing the proposal. Popham’s deputy minister even wrote a letter of support to the First Nation stressing the importance of the proposal, which is now in the package before the quasi-judicial ALC panel.

Liberal critic Mike de Jong questioned Popham based on documents from her office obtained via freedomof-information law regarding the ministry’s about-face.

She eventually concluded: “That’s it.

I’m not talking about it anymore.”

She said the issue is before the ALC panel and she didn’t want to appear to influence or interfere in the decision.

De Jong said that was ironic, given the attempts to influence already on display.

Prior to that, Popham did volunteer one crucial answer.

The released documents refer to a letter her deputy minister was going to send directly to the Agricultural Land Commission. Office emails described it as a draft letter to the chair and board that was referred to the minister for comment.

Such a letter could have been seen as breaching the independence of the commission. But after a real-time search during a pause in questioning, Popham said there is no record of it in government or ALC files of it being sent or received.

Similarly, after the initial rejection, a cabinet order was readied that would have excluded the property from ALR process entirely. It was shared with interested parties, but not signed into effect.

So far, no one has claimed the book of black and white photos, which appear to have been taken as early as the 1930s. It’s suspected the photos were

taken somewhere in the Peace region.

“We actually had a call from someone in Grande Prairie who thought maybe it was theirs, but turned out not to be,” said Boyd.

“It’s getting a lot of attention, so that’s cool. It’s not everyday you find old pictures like this.”

The dates are only a best guess, based on an older model of truck noted by commenters in one of the photos on Boyd’s post.

Rumble Alberta touring challenge receives a generous donation from Char’s Railway Cafe The Canadian Motorcycle Tourism Association (CMTA) would like to express its gratitude to the owner of Char’s Railway Cafe, in Smith, AB, for her generous donation. ‘Char’s’ owner, Charlette Flemming, is recognized in the community as a rural Alberta business champion.

She sets money aside every year that is earmarked for community-based donations. In addition to her annual support of the History Check app, Charlette has contributed $2,500 to the CMTA, for this year’s Rumble Alberta Touring Challenge.
