Goundbirch 4-H is ready for their sale

Another 4H year is coming to an end, and though it’s been an odd year, with restrictions limiting the gatherings and events that organizations can hold, members of the Groundbirch 4-H Community Club are getting a lot out of the program nonetheless.

Casey Bergen, along with the six other Groundbirch club members, will be showing and selling their cattle and steers this Saturday, June 12, for the club’s beef Achievement Day Show and Sale.

This is Bergen’s first year in 4H, and it’s been all she was hoping for, despite the restrictions. At 15, she had usually played hockey in Chetwynd throughout the school year, and decided this would be the perfect year to give 4H a try with hockey not really taking place for the season.

“I learned so much, a lot about my projects, about public speaking, and marketing. I really like it, and definitely want to do it next year. I ‘ll keep going with 4H as long as I can,” Bergen said.

Bergen’s brother, Carter (13), Brooke Rainey (10), and Jake Rainey (12) are all in their first year of 4H, while members Payden Bueckert (11), BrookeLynn Bueckert, and Layton Unruh (11) are in their third, fourth, and second years, respectively, of 4H. Bergen said she will miss her steer, Dudley, but is looking forward to a lot of aspects about the show and sale as well.

“It’s going to be really sad to say goodbye, he’s super friendly, I saddle him and ride him, and he gets a lot of attention,” she said.

“I’m looking forward to the grooming part of Achievement Days, and competing against others as well.”

The beef show starts at 2 p.m. at the Dawson Creek Fairgrounds.

The meet and greet with the members begins at 4 p.m., with the sale starting 6 p.m. at the Dawson Creek VJV.

‘Weekly updates from the Canadian Grain Commission (CGC) provide useful crop market demand information,’ says Neil Blue, provincial crop market analyst with Alberta Agriculture and Forestry.

The Canadian Grain Commission numbers include only movement of bulk crops through facilities licensed by the CGC, so exclude container movement of crops as well as overland crop movements to the U.S. ‘Numbers from the CGC on Canadian crop movement from August 1, 2020 to mid-May, 2021 compared to the last crop year show an improvement in producer crop deliveries relative to last year. Contributing factors to increased crop movement were timely completion of the 2020 harvest and robust demand.’

Crop year to date, non-durum wheat deliveries are up by 641,000 tonnes, or 4%.

Canadian durum deliveries are up by over one million tonnes, or 25%. Oat deliveries are up by 242,000 tonnes, or 11%, and barley deliveries are up by 1.1 million tonnes, or 34%.

Producer deliveries of canola are up by 1.49 million tonnes, or 9%. Pea and lentil deliveries are also higher than year ago numbers.

Exports of Canadian crops are equal to or higher than year ago for all crops. Canadian non-durum wheat exports are 3 million tonnes higher than year ago to date while durum exports are almost one million tonnes higher.

Oat exports are running 10% higher while barley exports are almost double last year’s pace.

Canola exports to mid-May are up by 1.1 million tonnes, or 45%. Although not a large crop in Alberta, Canadian soybean exports are up by 45%. Pea and lentil bulk exports are similar or higher than the year ago pace.

Domestic use of wheat, durum and oats are all higher than year ago. Although domestic use of barley appears to be lower from the CGC data, direct barley sales to feedlots are not included, and feeding demand has been strong. Canola crushing volume so far is higher than last year’s record pace.

‘The implications of these numbers are that crop demand has been strong and movement has been excellent,’ says Blue. ‘This demand-driven market has provided a boost to crop income during this crop year. Continuation of the strong prices depends on the outcome of this year’s crops and demand factors as the world deals with the challenges of COVID-19.’

Investment helps keep maple syrup exports pouring During her visit to the Québec Maple Syrup Producers Annual General Meeting, the Minister of Agriculture and Agri-Food, the Honorable Marie-Claude Bibeau, announced an investment of $1.76 million over the next two years (2021-2023) to support the export efforts of Quebec’s maple industry. The funding, which is provided under the federal AgriMarketing program, will help implement advertising and promotional activities in Germany and the UK. A digital communications strategy will also be developed to target the Japanese market and will focus on consumer education and awareness through virtual activities.

The investment builds on a previous federal investment through the AgriMarketing Program, which helped Québec Maple Syrup Producers successfully tap into these markets between 2018 and 2021.

Annual Blue Grass: A Risi Region Grass Seed Fields Submitted by Calvin Yoder Forage Seed Specialist, Peace Region Forage Seed Association and SARDA Ag Research Annual bluegrass (Poa annua) is not a new weed species to the Peace Region. However, a number of years ago it began to show up and propagate quickly in a number of creeping red fescue seed fields, particularly where fescue had been a steady crop for many years. This past summer (2020) it also appeared in fields where annual crops had been seeded. In the Peace Region, annual bluegrass is commonly found near field edges. It can start to move further into fields, particularly in wet years and into areas where there is no crop competition, such as drowned out areas.

Annual bluegrass is a contaminate in turf type grass seed crops throughout the world. The Peace Region is one of the main grass seed cropping areas in the world where annual bluegrass has not yet caused significant economic losses by downgrading seed crops. The main grass seed cropping areas in the world have always struggled with annual bluegrass, and it has now developed resistance to a number of herbicides. To date there has been a few reports of annual bluegrass in creeping red fescue seed samples from within the Peace Region, but not to levels where the seed lot was downgraded.

Originating from Europe, it is found throughout Canada. Annual blue grass is found throughout the Peace Region, but typically is not found in annual cropping rotations unless creeping red fescue has been a steady crop in the rotation. Many times it is found in areas where there is little competition from existing grasses. It is an annual or short-lived perennial in a tuft and is very low to the ground (Figure 1). It has high tolerance to mowing, trampling and poorly aerated soils. Seed production and seed viability are generally high. Plants are prolific seed producers, will germinate rapidly, have a short life-cycle and are small compact plants which makes them hard to notice.

No single control procedure has been successful in controlling annual bluegrass in turfgrass crops. Early removal of solitary infestations using hand pulling or spot spraying of herbicides has been successful when practiced diligently.

Management

Annual bluegrass is a difficult weed to control, particularly in grass seed crops. Other main grass seed growing areas in the world have been battling this weed for ages, and it continues to be the primary weed they struggle with.

Assure II and Poast Ultra, two grassy weed herbicides registered for use on creeping red fescue seed stands are not effective at controlling annual bluegrass.

The active ingredient pyroxasulfone has shown very good results in Oregon research trials as a fall or early spring applications on ESTABLISHED perennial ryegrass and tall fescue seed fields. In Canada pyroxasulfone is registered as a pre-seed treatment prior to seeding pulse crops and wheat. It does require a ½ inch of rainfall following application to effectively move into the soil. Annual bluegrass is listed as control on the Zidua label but would not control existing annual bluegrass plants.

PRFSA and SARDA Ag Research has done some screening work with pyroxasulfone and it has shown some promise for controlling annual bluegrass in the Peace Region, either late fall applied or early spring. A few herbicide tolerance trials on grass seed crops have been conducted. Unfortunately it has caused some damage to creeping red fescue, especially when applied in the spring.

Tolerance of bromegrasses and wheatgrasses to pyroxasulfone has looked promising.

Applications of pyroxasulfone applied prior to seeding grasses has caused significant stand reduction. Emergence was reduced by 80 to 90%. Screening tolerance trials to pyroxasulfone on established grass seed crops including creeping red fescue will continue over the next few years.

2) Edge. The active ingredient ethalfuralin has annual bluegrass on the label for control. Ethalfuralin is registered as a fall or spring pre-seed incorporated treatment prior to seeding canola and some pulse crops. Edge has been used by a few growers to manage small patches of annual bluegrass as a fall applied treatment on grass seed stands and has shown potential for control. Tolerance trial using fall and spring applied Edge on grass seed crops is required. Edge must not be applied prior to seeding grass stands.

3) Fierce. Has two active ingredients: flumioxazin+pyroxasulfone.

Registered in Canada as a pre-seed prior to seeding some pulse crops, corn and wheat. It does not have annual bluegrass on the Canadian label but has shown potential for use on perennial ryegrass and tall fescue in Oregon.

4) Treflan. The active ingredient trifluralin is distributed by several herbicide companies. It is registered as a pre-plant incorporated before seeding barley, canola, and forage legumes.

5) Glyphosate in Roundup Ready Canola. Glyphosate is effective on existing annual bluegrass plants but would not control flushes.

6) Liberty. High rates of Liberty have been used in Oregon to suppress annual bluegrass. However, because it is a contact herbicide, it does not leave a residue.

Summary

The Peace Region Forage Seed Association has highlighted managing annual bluegrass in grass seed crops as a top priority for both awareness and research. Herbicide weed control and grass seed crop herbicide tolerance trials are required to develop practices that will help manage annual blugrass. Since it is not an easy weed to control, it will require a number of different practices and crop types to manage effectively. Although annual bluegrass has been found in a number of grass seed fields, particularly creeping red fescue, it is not too late to keep it at bay.

Infectious causes of infertility in beef cattle Dr. Mike Ross There are many factors to consider in dealing with suspected infertility in beef cattle. The first is to determine if you indeed have a problem or if your losses are within normal expected range for beef cattle. The second is to review non-infectious causes of infertility, the most important being nutrition. Nutrition is the single most important factor that can cause fertility problems in cattle. Thin cows or under condition of cows is the most common cause of sub-fertility and high open rate in our experience.

Next is to rule out bull problems. This can include making sure you have an adequate bull to cow ratio, have a breeding soundness evaluation done on your bulls and also make sure your bulls haven’t been lame or injured during the breeding season.

This leads into another factor which is pasture management. It is vital to ensure that breeding pastures are the right size and environment to create ease of cow exposure to bulls.

Non-infectious causes are much more common than infectious causes. Once you have determined that you do indeed have a problem and have ruled out noninfectious causes, then you need to determine what stage of gestation the problems are occurring as different diseases can cause abortion at different stages.

This was a very difficult disease to diagnose because the bacteria doesn’t live for long outside the animal’s body. New tests are now available, which may improve accuracy and identify positive animals.

This test can be done the same time as a “trick test”. f.

Vaccines available- used to think these were curative but latest studies recommend culling positive carrier bulls. g.

Tetracycline antibiotics may be attempted for treatment.

2) Trichomoniasis a.

Caused by a protozoa – Tritrichomoniasis fetus b.

Venereal disease- spread by sexual contactcommunity pastures- high risk c.

Causes early abortions, infertility, and uterine infections d.

Carrier state in older bulls e.

High open rates with increased uterine infections diagnosed at preg-testing- red flag f.

No treatment g.

Treated with management - negative cultures, virgin bulls, cull affected animals h.

A test can be done where the bull’s prepuce is scraped and the sample is cultured. A more accurate test now available by identifying DNA of the dead organism. i.

3) Listeriosis a.

Bacterial abortions in last third of pregnancy b.

The bacteria is found in spoiled silage- grows well in PH>5 c.

May also cause nervous disease- head tilt, circling d.

Usually low incidence e.

Culture of contents of aborted fetuses stomach, placental or uterine fluid is important in diagnosis 4) Leptospirosis a.

Bacterial abortion - Late term >6mo b.

Thrives in areas of stagnant water in warm climates c.

Spread primarily by urine- the bacteria multiplies in the kidneys d.

Zoonosis (can cause illness in humans)- Wildlife may be source of some infections e.

Vaccines available- questionable effectiveness g.

Management- Fresh water management- wildlife free hay yards etc. h.

May cause early abortions among other numerous disease conditions c.

Vaccination- The main reason we promote spring vaccination protocols d.

Recently with new changes to testing for Trichomoniasis and Vibriosis we highly recommend community pastures to accept only tested bulls or virgin bulls. These have been diagnosed in the Peace country and testing may be the best step to prevent spread.

Both diseases can be tested for via a prepucial scraping collected at time of a breeding soundness exam.

If abortions are occurring, the most useful diagnostic tests are achieved by submission of the fetus and the placenta to a laboratory. A full post mortem will be done on the fetus and often lesions found can indicate a certain disease and testing can then be done to confirm this.

Equine Laminitis (Founder) can be fatal Laminitis is a common, painful, sometimes lethal disease of the equine foot caused by inflammation of the small blood vessels in the laminae of the hoof. Any horse can get laminitis, however overweight horses seem to be more likely to get it as there is a greater stress on their hooves. Causes of inflammation: grain overload, sudden introduction to lush pasture, infection, strenuous work on hard surfaces , injury, obesity and endocrine disease. Things to look for: the horse is reluctant to move, especially on hard surfaces, often standing with their front feet out in front of them and their hind legs more under them to take weight off of their front feet. They may lie down excessively and hooves may also be warmer than usual. Sometimes it can be so painful that they may sweat or shake when standing up. If you suspect laminitis, or grain

overload, please consult your veterinarian right away!

Softness - Before, During, and After Often in clinics I will say to the participants to look for and try to create softness before, during and after the maneuver. What ever they are asking of their horse, try to find the softness throughout.

If our horses are soft to the rein, leg and lead line it will show up in many areas but the most noticeable is the head and neck.

When a horse understands the request and the request is within the realm of what it has been taught, then the head and neck is soft and relaxed looking and feeling on the lead line or rein.

This is only true if the rider has been handling the horse and looking / trying to create softness before, during and after. If we didn’t realize that we needed to ride and handle our horses looking for softness then the horse may completely understand the task or exercise but has been taught to be heavy, stiff and braced. If we release for anything other than softness that is what we get: anything but softness.

Softness is not something you can make a horse be. You can make them light but you can’t make them soft. A light horse can have tension, it may move quickly and easily but with tightness. A soft horse cannot be soft and tight or tense. The goal is to try to do enough to create a light horse without sacrificing the softness.

The horse is in a different mind space when there is tightness

than when they are soft. If we do everything slow it is very easy to keep a horse soft. If you need speed and quick responses then it becomes much more challenging to keep the softness, but that would be the goal.

Tightness can come from the horse getting emotional about what is happening and it very often originates from the rider not looking for softness. An example of this would be when riding and you pick up a rein to stop or turn, the moment you touch the rein you should be looking for a soft feel on the other end. The horse should give to the rein by bringing its nose in and down or to the side wherever the pressure is taking it.

The opposite of softness is when the rein is touched the horses nose goes up and away from the direction asked or doesn’t move at all. This might seem to some very obvious but to many they have never had a horse actually give to the rein.

The feet turning and going the direction you want to go and a horse that is giving to the rein are two different things. You can have a horse turn to the right while they turn their head to the left. If you asked for that kind of head position, great; if you didn’t, then not so great, and the horse would not be considered soft.

Many times horses are turned to the right or left with their heads pulled the opposite way but the rider doesn’t realize they are

the ones doing it. Anything we purposely or accidentally do 3 times starts to create a habit.

Creating good habits is much easier than repairing bad ones.

An example of what to look for on the ground is when leading or circling a horse the goal would be to never feel the horse on the line. When you walk off, while your walking and when you stop the line stays loose, never pulls on the handler. When circling the goal is the same, when you send the horse out onto the circle, while he is circling and when you ask for the circling to end the line never gets pulled on by us or the horse and the horse should be looking in towards us not away from us.

These are some signs that softness is on the way and we have been correct in looking for and creating softness. Next time you are out with your horse take notice of what happens when you touch the rein or lead line.

COW FEEDING PROGRAM IMPACTS FETAL DEVELOPMENT DURING EARLY PREGNANCY

It is well documented that a balanced ration provided to a pregnant cow impacts muscle tone and the ability of the cow to deliver the calf. It helps prevent downer cows and milk fevers.

The quantity and quality of colostrum produced 4 to 6 weeks prior to calving is also impacted (required for passive immunity passed on to the calf). Lastly, the ability to repair the reproductive system (involution) and prepare for the breeding season is also affected.

The cow is at or near peak lactation when breeding season starts. This stage of production has the highest demands for nutrients over the production year. At very early stages of pregnancy, the placenta develops rapidly. The placenta has many different types of cells, each has a different function. One function is the development of blood vessels which are needed to transfer nutrients from the maternal blood supply to the fetus. If nutrients are not available to fully develop the placenta the growth rate and development of the fetus can be impaired.

By day 21 of pregnancy, a calf heartbeat can be detected. By day 25, the pancreas, liver, adrenal glands, lungs, thyroid, spleen, brain thymus and kidney are starting to develop (Hubbert et. al., 1972). It is critical to provide a balanced ration in early pregnancy. If the nutritional needs are not met, development of these organs can be delayed or growth of these organs can be reduced. The function of these organs can be impaired. Research completed

by Long, et.al, (2010) determined that cows that were underfed for the first 83 days of gestation resulted in calves having a smaller lungs and trachea compared to the cows fed the proper ration.

Other research found that early pregnancy nutrient deficiencies can predispose calves to cardiovascular, metabolic and endocrine diseases later in life. It can also cause the fetus to change the production of hormones to ensure its survival in utero, but can impact future growth potential later in life.

Turning cows out early onto last years’ carry over dormant pasture might not have adequate quality to meet nutritional requirements. Providing a high quality forage and grain as supplemental feeds may be necessary.

Tory Snider Hello! We will be back with bi-weekly articles on a variety of different topics, and today’s is about the BC Peace Weather website! 21 different stations around the BC Peace region provide users with more localized weather conditions.

Available for use is not only a 48 hour weather forecast for each station, but Growing Degree Days (GDD), a Wheat Midge predictor tool, a Fusarium Headblight (FHB) predictor tool and access to historical data.

To use GDD, pick your desired station and then pick a seeding date and end date. It will give you a summary of the number of days at bases of 0°C, 5°C, 10°C with actual and normal headings. You can make the tool more crop specific by choosing from canola, wheat and barley. The tool will then show when key stages of growth have occurred or potentially will. The wheat midge calculator shows not only the daily GDD and accumulated GDD for a given period but the predicted emergence of Wheat Midge.

The FHB tool acts similar in picking your desired station, and choosing the susceptibility of your crop. Once calculated, it will give you graphs of the average temperature and humidity of the last 8 days. Included with the Weather data it shows hourly breakdowns of

the temperature, humidity, wind speed and rainfall over the last 7 days. The historical data starts from May 2018, when the creation of the BC Weather Network was undertaken to the current date. A choice of charts or tables is available depending on preference of the user. Also available is the ability to export data onto your computer or smart device. The information provided in the exported data includes temperature, humidity, rainfall and wind from the dates you choose.

There is also a user guide to help you navigate the site. The website is free for users to sign up and access. With signing up you can set notifications to allow you to be notified of weather events. Check out the BC Peace Weather website at www.bcpeaceweather. com

Peace region pest update: on canola scouting Hello Peace Region! My name is Tory Snider and I work for the Peace Region Forage Seed Association. This growing season I will be helping Keith Uloth on the Pest Monitoring project again and updating all of you as we go. Are you suspecting that your crops may be suffering from pest (insect, disease, weed) damage?

This chart shows the stages in which many species of insects are relevant to the canola growing season. Check it out to get an idea of what your crop may be at risk for throughout the growing season!

Our goal this summer for Canola

is to focus on monitoring Flea beetles, Swede Midge (not yet in this region), Bertha Army Worms, Diamond Back Moths, Lygus Bugs just to name a few and how they are affecting crops. With help from local producers we have established monitoring sites for these insects at various locations around the Peace Region and will be monitoring them weekly. Each week we will be gathering data to assist producers regarding pest damage and prevention, also to inform researchers of pest populations. In the future, you can expect to hear about a pest each week that is particularly

problematic at a crop stage, and in contrast we will also identify some beneficial insects that help protect your crop.

‘The issue of sustainability is gaining more and more attention, from the clothes Canadians wear, to the toys they buy their children, and the food they eat,’ according to the Canadian Centre for Food Integrity 2020 Public Trust Research. ‘Sustainability is more than just a trend, but an issue that will increasingly influence consumer attitudes and behaviours.’

Nearly half of Albertans say they either sometimes or always seek out items that use less packaging in the grocery store. While Albertans largely believe they are responsible for reducing food waste, they also believe that food processors and manufacturers have a responsibility to reduce the amount of packaging and to offer more environmentally friendly food packaging options.

‘Sustainability in food is not just a trend but a requirement to be a trusted and successful food system participant,’ says Ava Duering, competitiveness analyst with Alberta Agriculture and Forestry. ‘Food processors can address consumer concerns on this issue by clearly demonstrating commitment to environmental sustainability in food and agriculture as well as improving food packaging. Those who are the most innovative will be the most successful.’

Duering points out food processors can appeal to consumers who value sustainability in food products by marketing their products as being environmentally sustainable, whether on their websites, on their packaging or in social media, in order to increase market share.

‘Marketers may also wish to target the younger population of Generation Z and Millennials and women, as they are more likely to seek out sustainable food than their older male counterparts.’

Albertans appear to be more concerned with the price of food than their Canadian and American counterparts, with 52% of Albertans surveyed indicating they are very concerned about the cost of food. ‘Therefore, food manufacturers must be cognizant of this when establishing pricing for products sold in Alberta,’ says Duering.

Free wildfire assessments being offered for rural residents Many people in the Peace River Regional District live in the wildland/urban interface – the areas where forest and grassland are interspersed with homes and buildings. The risk of loss of life and property from wildfire in those areas can be very high, especially with the threat of wildfire in BC increasing each year.

Homeowners will receive practical advice and simple steps to drastically reduce fire risk to their property during the assessment, helping to ensure that their home is left standing in the event of a wildfire.

The Rumble to Fort McMurray Eric Larson eric.larson@ motorcycletourism.ca There comes a time when one must look back on the preconceived notions we have and rethink them - or maybe even question how you have come to hold them in the first place.

Such was the case for me when I rode up to Fort McMurray after the May long weekend to see for myself what Fort McMurray Wood Buffalo has to offer.

I knew the week was going to be challenging with the weather and a couple of times I was very sorry that I left my heated vest at home, but most people that set out for adventures often have challenges upon the way. Probably the biggest challenge I had while in this northern region was finding enough hours in the day to see everything.

Let’s start with a bit about Fort McMurray and the Regional Municipality of Wood Buffalo (RMWB). Fort McMurray started as a Northwest Company fur trading post back in 1790 and was named after William McMurray who worked for the Hudson’s Bay Company.

In 1995, the City of Fort McMurray amalgamated with Improvement District #143 to form the RMWB. This vast region includes six First Nations communities, five Métis Local Councils, one Métis Community Association, the city of Fort McMurray, and the rural

communities of Fort Fitzgerald, Fort Chipewyan, Fort McKay, Draper, Saprae Creek Estates, Gregoire Lake Estates, Anzac, Janvier, and Conklin.

No motors allowed on this lake at Maqua Lake Provincial Park.

Day one was the ride up to Fort McMurray, which was a lot of slab (highway) and very little dirt.

The slab consisted of Highway 63 which was once known as the Fort McMurray 500, due to the speeds people drove on this highway. Now though, you will find the highway twinned into four lanes from the junction of 55 and 63 about 230 KMs south of Fort McMurray. You will see lots of Sheriffs and RCMP to ensure that speeds are closer to the posted speed limit.

I did find some great gravel when I took some industry roads just to see where they went, and the trip into Crow Lake Provincial Park was short but awesome.

Crow Lake park was a great place to have a coffee and a rest and to watch the birds on the water.

For those that wish to bush camp, there are lots of areas that will fit your style throughout this whole area.

Day 2 started with a great breakfast at the TownePlace Suites by Marriott Fort McMurray and then a coffee overlooking a forested area regrowing from the 2016 Horse River Wildfire behind the hotel.

After coffee I met with Tyler Cole from Fort McMurray Wood

Buffalo Economic Development & Tourism and we headed out to explore south on Highway 881 towards Engstrom Lake Provincial Recreation Area.

Our day consisted of exploring some of the parks in the area and checking out some of the industr roads to see where they go.

Day 3 was an epic day for me!

Riding up to the sand dunes north of Fort McMurray at the gates to the Fort Chipewyan Winter Road was an awesome experience and riding into the soft sand was amazing. Now, I did not go far as a heavy bike with improper tires was not the ticket to conquer this stretch, but give me an ATV or smaller dual sport bike and watch out! The Kitaskino Nuwenëné Wildland and Richardson Wildland Provincial Parks offer limitless exploring opportunities for those keen for adventure.

When you see this area, you think of Morocco or some other foreign land but not Alberta, Canada!

Words can not describe this area accurately, but think of the best beach sand going on for miles and miles, with trees and a few lakes interspersed within all this sand.

Impassable bog for this rider on the Conklin - Lac La Biche winter road Day 4 was the day to start heading back so I mapped my route to include the winter road known as the Alpac haul or K

road. Again more sand welcomed me and I made it a short way down the winter road before a deep boggy area turned me around.

This night I hit the winter road from the south and camped beside a small lake, listening to the birds singing to me to sleep in my tent.

Day 5 I was up with a light rain on my tent. I was on the road by 7am, and experienced one of the wettest days in a long time. When I finally made it home later that afternoon a hot shower and a nap was needed.

My trip up to Fort McMurray Wood Buffalo covered about 2500 km and a wide range of weather conditions, but what’s most notable was the people I met and the places that I saw. Would I ride up there again you may ask?

In a heartbeat, and I would likely camp in some of the many out of the way lakes and rivers that dot this amazing region.

Managing manure is key to minimizing pen dust ‘In Alberta, feedlot dust can develop during periods of prolonged dry weather,’ says Trevor Wallace, nutrient management specialist with Alberta Agriculture and Forestry.

‘While pen dust is not the only source of rural dust emissions (e.g., road traffic, feed yard and field activities), it is important that producers minimize pen dust because it can be a significant issue for livestock welfare and worker health, as well as a nuisance for neighbours.’

Dust from a feedlot is strongly influenced by weather and manure management. Wind, warm temperatures and increased sun exposure can rapidly dry out manure in feedlot pens.

Geographic regions experiencing low rainfall can see an accelerated manure drying effect. As daytime temperatures and wind speed subside, usually in the late afternoon or early evening, cattle activity increases, stirring up dust into the air above the pens. Without wind, dust tends to hang above the feedlot yard and can be extremely slow to disperse. These dust emissions peak into the evening, creating the greatest impact on livestock, staff and neighbours enjoying outdoor activities.

Feedlot pen dust is the result of dry, uncompacted manure, including bedding and soil, being pulverized into a fine powder by livestock activity and then being kicked up into the air by hoof action and wind. As warm, dry conditions reduce manure moisture content, it becomes more susceptible to being broken down into fine particles.

‘The most effective dust control method is to proactively remove manure before summer, and then monitor and remove any loose uncompacted material that accumulates over the summer,’ explains Wallace. Dedicating equipment and manpower may require extended effort but pen dust will become less of an issue.

‘Normally, we suggest the best approach is to scrape the feedlots by the beginning of June; however, every region is different. To monitor for low moisture conditions and dust potential in your area, you can visit the Alberta Climate Information Service (ACIS) webpage to access near real

time weather information and moisture situation updates.’

Secondary dust control methods, applying water to pen surfaces and increasing stock density, should only be considered after properly managing pen manure volume.

These methods increase the moisture content of the manure, so it will not break down into a fine powder.

The most common methods of applying water include the use of water trucks, solid-set sprinklers and traveling gun watering systems. Applying water will not be as effective at controlling dust if manure volumes are not dealt with. In general, when more than 2.5 cm of uncompacted manure is present in pens, the water volume required to penetrate the manure profile is significant and cannot be practically applied without creating a wet surface.

This can lead to pen floor damage and odour.

‘Weather will also affect water application efficiency,’ Wallace adds. ‘While it is more effective to apply water in the late afternoon, it may be too windy to do so properly. Alternatively, water applied in the morning or midday is wasted if evaporative demand is high. So before using water to control dust, it is a good idea to check the weather forecast.’

Another option involves increasing stock density, which helps increase pen moisture content by distributing manure and urine over a smaller area, minimizing the breakdown of manure. Wallace says that research suggests doubling the livestock density can reduce pen dust by up to 50%.

My name is Jessica Wiebe. I am for the the Prespatou 4-H Community Club. As spring rolled around our club has been busy. We did a 10 km garbage clean up in our community. It felt good to see the clean ditches. It turned out to be great weather on the day we did it!

All the beef members are busy getting their animals cleaned and clipped and leading.

We are getting our sheep ready as well. We got our lambs sheared. Now it will be easier to wash them and get them all cleaned and clipped. The market lambs are doing great .

All sheep had gained 20 lbs or more.

On May 27 we had a sale selling flower baskets and some other small plants. This was a fundraiser for our club.

Today the Minister of Agriculture and Agri-Food, the Honourable Marie-Claude Bibeau, announced that the Poultry and Egg On-Farm Investment Program (PEFIP) is now accepting applications.

The Government of Canada will contribute up to 70% of the projects costs, increasing to up to 85% for young farmers, to help ensure a strong future for Canada’s farms. The PEFIP offers producers flexibility to seek funding for eligible activities that started on or after March 19, 2019.

The PEFIP will provide almost $647 million over ten years to support poultry and egg producers through on-farm investments. Each producer is entitled to an amount proportional to their quota holdings as of January 1, 2021.

Applications will be accepted until March 31, 2030, meaning producers can apply when they are ready to make an investment.
