The Teepee Creek Stampede is busting out of the gate this summer, July 8 to 11, making its return after the 2020 event was cancelled. It will be the 104th version of the Northern Alberta staple.

Groundbirch 4H news “The Groundbirch 4-H Multiclub Annual Communication day looked a little different this year.

The participants still learned about ways to present various topics, but had to send them in virtually to follow covid-19 safety protocols. Taking 1st place for our Sr. Speak & Show was Caslyn Mclean. In the Jr. Speak & Show 1st place was Vienna Unruh &

2nd place was Brooke Rainey. In the Educational Display category 1st place was Carter Bergen. In Jr. Speech placings were Elissa Mclean in 1st, and Casey Bergen in 2nd place. We had many other great projects including those from our 6-8 year old Cloverbuds and have been continuing to learn about our animal projects and serving in our community.”

Traverse digging into the dirt, cultivating community Tiffany Traverse had been interested in seed and soil trials for some time, always interested in seeing what vegetables could thrive in the unique Peace Region climate and environment. In the last couple years, she thought about doing her own project and research, and began forming relationships with different agricultural groups to see what opportunities might be available, as she lacked the funding to do something like this on her own.

years. We have a short season, challenges with soil, and face drought conditions some years, and I want to see what the best options are,” Traverse said.

The trial will test bovine, swine, poultry, and equine manure, as well as composting, to see which work the best.

“We thought doing a project with a self sustaining farming system would be really interesting.

Tiffany is doing biological farming and recycling nutrients in her own system, and we want to document our knowledge from this and compare it to western science,” said Shrestha, who works out of Beaverlodge Research Farms.

For Traverse, this project isn’t only about testing different kinds of soil.

“Being Indigenous, I wanted to break down the barriers between us working on the ground and those working in academic areas.

She was asked to do a two-acre plot, but said as she’s only one person without a fulltime farm business, she needed to do what worked best for her.

“I’m not interested in canola and forage crops. I wanted to create something that a community member, or First Nations community could use with their own gardening,” she said.

“We want to look at the existing, ecological knowledge of Indigenous people. They’ve been managing their own land for a long time, and their description of soil health and findings on their land might be different from findings from western science,” said Shrestha.

Traverse acknowledges that similar trials to see which fertilizers work best have been done in the past, but as climate and temperatures have changed, she was really curious to see what would happen now.

“Research done 20 years ago won’t be the same as today,” said Traverse.

The researchers are excited by the possibilities of working in a closed system.

Gorzelak, who works out of the Lethbridge Research and Development Centre, was brought on board by Shrestha, because of her work specializing in microbiome and roots.

“The nutrients all come from the farm, that’s the best part of the project. Usually, we separate cattle from crop farms, and it becomes too expensive to use cow manure.

But this way, if we can integrate livestock into a system, it could be the future of farming, and could lead to farming being a solution to climate change,” Gorzelak said.

Traverse can’t wait to get started on the project.

“I’m really excited. There will be a lot of work to do, especially as just one person. If people want to volunteer and are interested in helping out, whether that’s with planting or weeding, and in turn receive mentorship from me, that’s something that could be very helpful,” she said.

Traverse made sure to emphasize that this project is for the local community and for community groups.

“I’m not interested in continuing to fuel that capitalistic, big-agriculture circle. I’m interested in what community members need and want,” Traverse said.

“By recycling the nutrients in a closed system, you don’t need to rely on chemical fertilizers. Yes, productivity is higher when using chemical fertilizers, but there are consequences with nitrous oxide, which is a much worse greenhouse gas than carbon dioxide,” Shrestha said.

The issue it is all about newborn foal management

By Dr. Evany Forrest Breeding and foaling out mares can be a rewarding but stressful time each spring, and it is important that the new babies get diligent care to avoid health complications.

Foals are much more fragile than calves, and prompt intervention and treatment is crucial if any problems are suspected. Preg checking mares 14 days after breeding is recommended to avoid twin complications later along in the pregnancy.

Signs of Impending Birth: A mare’s normal gestation period can range anywhere from 320-360 days, so it is important to be prepared and have a very clean foaling space available well in advance of the anticipated foaling time. Udders will begin to fill 2-4 weeks prior to parturition, and mares teats will “wax” 1-4 days prior to delivery.

Pelvic ligaments and the vulva will become more relaxed when the mare is within 48 hrs of foaling. There are also commercial milk testing kits that can help predict when foaling will happen based on mineral composition changes that occur up to 3 days prior to foaling.

Stages of Parturition Mares go through 3 stages of the birthing process: Stage 1: Restlessness, pacing and sweating with a raised tail- this stage indicates that the foal is repositioning for birth and uterine contractions are beginning. Usually this stage lasts for less than 6 hours, but it is somewhat under voluntary control so can be interrupted for many hours if the mare is stressed.

Stage 2: Fast stage where the chorioallantoic membrane ruptures and releases allantoic fluid (the water breaks). Strong uterine contractions should result in rapid delivery of the foal within 30mins. Two feet and a nose within a silvery sac should be visible early on in this stage- if feet are not visible, a “red bag” is seen, or there is not tangible progress made within 10 minutes a veterinarian should be contacted immediately as the foal is at risk of severe oxygen deprivation or even death.

Stage 3: Expulsion of the afterbirth (placenta). Unlike in cows, horse placentas must be expelled within 1-3 hrs of birth. If this is not the case, the retained placenta is considered a medical emergency as it can quickly cause overwhelming infection and

laminitis in the mare. If the afterbirth has not been passed within 3 hrs, give the vet a call to plan the next steps before there is a chance for infection to occur. Do not pull on the afterbirth as this can cause it to rip, and save any expelled membranes for the vet to inspect.

How to Tell if a New Foal is Healthy: The 1-2-3 Rule is important: Healthy foals should stand within 1 hr, nurse within 2 hrs and poop within 3 hrs. If any of these conditions are not met, veterinary assistance may be required.

Foals must ingest colostrum (first milk) as soon as possible after standing- colostrum contains IgG antibodies that are the foal’s only form of protection from infection for the first weeks of life. The best absorption of colostrum happens within 8hrs of birth, so multiple successful nursing episodes should have occurred within this time. Normal foals nurse at least once per hour, and failure to do so is the first sign of a problem. Ensuring adequate colostrum intake and IgG transfer is the single most important factor in preventing development of fatal neonate infections.

A simple, on farm test of IgG is available and it is recommended to have this test done by your veterinarian at around 12hrs old to ensure adequate colostrum ingestion has already occurred. Health checks at 12hrs old gives the veterinarian time to successfully supplement any problems before illness is present. IV plasma transfusions can be done in foals that fail to nurse soon enough to directly administer IgG into their bloodstream and provide essential immune protection.

Support of the Newborn Foal The average foal should gain 2-3lbs per day, and must ingest 12-20% of their own bodyweight in milk daily. Supplemental feeding is necessary if foal is struggling to nurse, but syringe feeding/ force feeding should be avoided as it can cause aspiration pneumonia. If foals will not drink from a bottle or bucket, a feeding tube may need to be placed to allow safe administration of milk. Always feed foals in a standing position.

Mares can be hand milked out, or commercial equine milk replacers can be used.

If you notice any abnormalities with a new foal, your vet will be happy to answer any questions over the phone and set up a health check if needed. Keep an eye out for colicky

behaviour, straining to urinate/ defecate, tooth grinding, hesitance to rise and nurse, and swellings or deformities of the legs. If a foal is sick or unable to stand up, it is best to keep it warm and laying upright on its chest rather than flat on its side while awaiting veterinary assistance.

Prevent lead poisoning on pastures

‘Discarded batteries that have gone through several freeze-thaw cycles and no longer have intact cases are the most dangerous,’ says Dr. Joe Kendall, veterinary toxicologist with Alberta Agriculture and Forestry. ‘The lead plates are exposed and easily accessible by the animals.’

He says that young calves are particularly attracted to the taste of lead and will actively seek it out.

‘Cattle that have consumed toxic levels of lead will exhibit seizures and sudden death. They may appear blind and wander aimlessly. Cattle that have consumed smaller amounts of lead will appear normal, but the lead levels in the body will make the meat and milk unsafe for human consumption until the lead has been eliminated. Animals that have died from lead toxicity must be safely buried to prevent lead toxicity in wildlife.’

Dr. Kendall adds that most cases of lead exposure and poisoning in cattle that have been reported to the Office of the Chief Provincial

WATER QUALITY ON PASTURE (www.beefconsultants.com, April 5, 2020) Winters with above normal snowfall are beneficial to improve water quality in pasture dugouts. With a large spring runoff, dugouts can over fill, allowing for some of the water from last year to be “flushed” out. If the water from last summer had high amounts of total dissolved solids or mineral content; the flush will reduce the concentrations.

In 2017, a grazing reserve in north-west Saskatchewan experienced cattle losses, which was directly traced back to water quality. There was very little runoff that spring and the summer was very hot. This increased the amount of water the cows consumed daily. Evaporative losses were high, which resulted in the minerals in the dugout water to become more concentrated.

Water test results indicated high levels of minerals, including sulfur. It was determined that the cows died from polio, which is caused by high levels of sulfur in the diet (including water). Approximately 200 head died within 7 days of being turned out into this paddock.

Low quality water can reduce animal performance. High levels of total dissolved solids reduce the amount of water animals consume. If they do not drink adequate amounts of water, forage consumption decreases.

This reduces milk production and growth rates of calves or backgrounding animals.

Veterinarian have occurred in cattle grazing on pasture.

‘Lead exposure or poisoning, along with other toxins, must be reported to the Office of the Chief Provincial Veterinarian. It is important to reduce the risk of contamination of pasture and farmland with lead and to be diligent about keeping an eye out for any signs of buried batteries or other sources of lead.’

Abandoned and discarded batteries are usually found around abandoned vehicles and farm machinery, old dumps and disposal sites, homesteads, outbuildings and along fence lines.

If the batteries have broken open, it is important to do a thorough job cleaning up not only the lead plates but also the soil around the battery.

Used lead acid batteries should be safely disposed at collection stations across the province. Go to Recycling Council of Alberta to find the nearest location to dispose spent lead acid batteries.

Beef demand robust and increasing ‘Although there are regional delays, foodservice is slowly ramping up across North America, supporting increased domestic movement,’ says Jason Wood, provincial livestock market analyst with Alberta Agriculture and Forestry. ‘Tighter supplies of pork resulting from increased export demand are increasing the retail positioning of beef.’

The blended U.S. boxed beef price, converted to Canadian dollars, was $337/ cwt for the week ending April 9, up over 10% from the previous week and over 30% higher since the start of the year. Recent weekly gains are exceeding previous projections, suggesting that the boxed beef price may exceed expectations as we move into late May. ‘Higher boxed beef prices are starting to benefit the U.S. fed cattle cash price.

Until recently, large frontend supplies of fed cattle were dampening any upside in the cash market,’ explains Wood.

The U.S. cash fed cattle market is trading higher in April, recently at US$120/ cwt after ranging between US$110/cwt to US$114/cwt through most of 2021. In Alberta, the Canfax fed steer price was reported at $150.82/cwt for the week ending April 9.

The Donation Steer initiative originated as an idea of past Valhalla club leader, Delwyn Postman, who had been seeking a way for the members to give thanks to the community for years of support. Tragically, in November of 1992, Delwyn was killed in a motor vehicle accident on his way to the meeting where he was planning to present his idea. In his memory, 4-H members and fellow leaders have continued on with the program ever since. Valhalla and Beaverlodge 4-H Clubs are proud to have raised over $234,000 and donated to over 59 charities during this time.

Irrigation has the potential to improve entire landscapes, communities and agricultural operations, bringing muchneeded water to areas that need it. On top of providing crop, livestock and food processing operations with water, it also supplies municipalities, recreational areas, wetlands and wildlife habitats.

With that in mind, Agriculture and Forestry, through its AgriFood Sector Investment and Growth Strategy, the Canada Infrastructure Bank (CIB), the Special Areas Board (SAB) and the MD of Acadia, have reached a memorandum of understanding to assess the technical and financial feasibility of developing irrigation in east-central Alberta.

For the MD of Acadia and the SAB, this feasibility study is the next step in work that has been underway since the ‘80s. Together, the Special Areas and the MD of Acadia cover over 5 million acres of land between Red Deer and the Saskatchewan border.

‘Alberta has a well-earned reputation for high-quality crops and livestock, much of which is grown in east-central Alberta.

This feasibility study will help us determine if expanding irrigation is possible, which could lead to even more production in our province’, says Devin Dreeshen, Minister of Agriculture and Forestry.

‘The Council and staff of the MD of Acadia are excited to be partnering with the Special Areas, Alberta Agriculture, and the P I Canada U Q EInfrastructure M R A F Bank R to investigate regional irrigation development opportunities.

Irrigation would bring major economic benefits to our whole region, and to producers in it and would increase water security while enhancing recreational opportunities,’ says Peter Rafa, Reeve of the MD of Acadia.

‘Securing a reliable supply of water is critical to creating new opportunities in the Special Areas region, from increasing crop and cattle production to mitigating environmental challenges resulting from drought and climate change. This partnership will allow our region to look at how we can develop and expand irrigation in a financially feasible

way,’ says Jordon Christianson, chair of the Special Areas Board.

The irrigation industry creates thousands of jobs and contributes billions every year to Alberta’s agri-food gross domestic product.

Last fall, the Alberta Government, together with the CIB and 8 irrigation districts, announced a historic $815-million investment in irrigation expansion and modernization.

A different kind of pet gets domesticated:

Howie the Duck is a hit in Chetwynd Aidan 17, and Howie, 1 hang in Chetwynd.

Kristie Low and family brought a pet duck into their family on April 1 – no joke.

Last year a Low family friend was incubating ducklings when she had a few extra.

“I have a friend who incubates eggs – and last year she had a bunch hatch in March, then Howie hatched April 1st last year,” says Low, a Chetwynd resident. “Howie is a well taken care of duck.”

An insulated hut has been constructed for Howie – and a female duck was brought in over the cold season for Howie to winter with. An owl looking scarecrow adorns the hut to keep predator Ravens away.

The Lows are owners of a dog and cat, Copper and Rufus, but there has been no animal rivalry between traditional home animals and Howie.

“Our other pets don’t really bother him – in fact the dog and duck have bonded.”

Low notes Howie, an emotional support animal, does one thing much more frequently than expected, and more than other animals in the flock.

Intake for carbon tax relief grants open Eligible greenhouse operators can now apply for carbon tax relief grants for the 2020 production year.

Commercial producers in B.C. who grow vegetables, ornamental flowers and plants, forest seedlings and nursery plants in greenhouses are eligible to apply for the grant until May 10, 2021, if they: had sales exceeding $20,000 in 2020;

used natural gas or propane to heat their greenhouses or produce carbon dioxide; and had a production area greater than 455 square metres.

The grant covers 80% of the carbon tax commercial greenhouse growers of eligible crops paid on the natural gas and propane they used for greenhouse heating and carbon dioxide production in 2020. Cannabis is not an eligible crop at any phase of production, including propagation.

Greenhouse growers supply communities with fresh vegetables for about 10 months of the year on more than 300 hectares of land, growing tomatoes, peppers, cucumbers, eggplants, lettuce and other crops. In addition to vegetable growers, B.C.’s floriculture and nursery industries grow more than 80 million greenhouse flowers and cuttings and produce approximately 50 million potted plants a year.

Technology, innovation to strengthen B.C.’s food security The Province is investing in programs that will apply technology and innovation to agriculture to strengthen B.C.’s food security and support economic recovery.

Building on the Food Security Task Force’s recommendations, the new Agritech Concierge will support food producers and agritech innovators, including recipients of the Agritech Grant program, advance their businesses and address the agricultural challenges being faced by the agriculture industry, in B.C. and around the globe.

“Supporting our province’s food producers and agritech innovators is part of building a strong economic recovery for everyone,” said Premier John Horgan. “We’re acting on the valued work and recommendations of our Food Security Task Force. By launching these programs now, our province will reap the benefits of access to homegrown, safe, nutritious and affordable food for generations of British Columbians to come.”

The task force was appointed

by Premier Horgan in July 2019 to provide strategic advice and recommendations brought forward in a 2020 Food Security

Task Force report. The report outlined how technology and innovation can be developed to strengthen B.C.’s agriculture sector and food security.

Through a suite of services, the Agritech Concierge will help businesses grow, diversify, access new markets and attract investment opportunities.

The concierge will provide personalized service to businesses to attract investment capital, navigate government programs and connect with other levels of government.

The concierge will help companies understand and navigate the land opportunities available to grow their businesses and provide advice on how to work with communities to identify opportunities for investment.

the agritech sector will play a key role in our economic recovery.”

After a successful intake of the Agritech Grant program, the B.C. government has increased the program’s funding by an additional $4.5 million, for a total investment of $7.5 million. With this new funding, the number of companies eligible for the Agritech Grant increased from a projected 10 companies to 21.

The grants will be awarded to the recipients by March 31, 2021.

Funded projects include the development of custom robotics for safe, efficient berry and mushroom harvesting, lowcost wireless biosensors to monitor pathogens in agriculture and community-scale manure management.

“We remain fully committed to increasing our food security in B.C.,” said Lana Popham, Minister of Agriculture, Food and Fisheries. “Agritech is one of the ways to do that, and by supporting agritech businesses and entrepreneurs, we can continue to develop and create a world-leading agritech sector that will help increase our domestic food production, strengthen our domestic resiliency and expand our reach into international markets.”

As part of its inaugural work, the Agritech Concierge will support grant recipient companies to scale up, expand and develop technologies to help increase regenerative and sustainable food production in B.C. It will also facilitate pathways for international and out-of-province companies to locate and expand within B.C. The Agritech Grant program is part of StrongerBC: BC’s Economic Recovery Plan. The plan focuses on recovery that is innovative, sustainable and inclusive. It outlines the latest steps the Government of British Columbia is taking to help people, businesses and communities come out of COVID-19 stronger, without leaving people behind.

Peter Dhillon, chair, B.C.’s Food Security Task Force said to drive the agritech sector forward, the Food Security Task Force laid out an ambitious, built-in-B.C. plan.

“Our final report outlines recommendations that focus on opportunities to increase innovation and develop technologies to support the future of this sector and ensure B.C. is

globally recognized. I am pleased to see this work materialize.

The task force looks forward to its continued engagement with government to further the task force’s recommendations.”

Hamlet Abnousi, co-founder and CEO, Novobind Livestock Therapeutics, Vancouver said he would like to thank the B.C. government for the Agritech grant.

“This funding is the boost we need to further our research and development of biologics as a safe way to fight rising resistance to anti-infectives in livestock, aquaculture and pets.

Our complementary alternative to conventional treatments will help ensure our food, our communities and our homes are clean and safe.”

Timothy Kendrick, BW GLOBAL, Abbotsford talked about being grateful.

“Grateful to receive the StrongerBC Agritech grant. This grant will help build the Better World Innovation Centre where we will develop, demonstrate and deploy new, commercialscale agritech and clean tech on our 45-acre regenerative organic farm. Our aim is to have business, government and academia focus on real world solutions to improve food security in B.C. and around the world.”

Applications for the Agritech Grant program opened Dec. 11, 2020, and closed Feb. 12, 2021.

Over 100 applications were received for the Agritech Grant program, with 21 grant recipients.

Disbursed grants range from $150,000 to $500,000.

The Agritech Concierge program is open to high-growth potential companies that are a B.C.-based technology or agritech company, agricultural producer or agri-food company.

Consideration will be given to companies outside of B.C. that intend to establish operations in B.C. in the near term.

Agritech refers to the use of technology and technological innovation to improve efficiency and output of agricultural production. Examples of agritech include indoor growing, vertical growing, sensor technology, robotics, food processing technology, agricultural genomics and waste reduction technology.

Canola carryover – will there be any?

‘Producers with unpriced canola remaining after the 2020 harvest have been delighted and amazed by the price increase since harvest,’ says Neil Blue, provincial crop market analyst with Alberta Agriculture and Forestry. ‘New record canola prices have been set for both futures and cash.’

‘Canadian canola demand has also been spectacular,’ adds Blue. ‘Canola exports are record high for this time in the crop year.’

According to Canadian Grain Commission data, as of April 4, bulk exports of canola from Canada this crop year are 8.19 million tonnes. That export number excludes the small amount of canola exported by container.

Domestic canola crushing to date, at 7.25 million tonnes, is on pace with last year’s record level.

Estimated Canadian canola carryover last July 31 was 3.13 million tonnes. Statistics

Canada has estimated 2020 Canadian canola crop production at 18.72 million tonnes.

Adding in 100 thousand tonnes of imports results in total supply for this crop year of 21.95 million tonnes.

Canadian Grain Commission stats show that farmers have delivered 15.4 million tonnes of canola to elevators and crushers so far.

‘If the 2020 carryover and production numbers are correct, that leaves about 6.55 million tonnes left in farmers’ storage, with 17 weeks remaining in this crop year. That is an average of 385,000 tonnes per week, and remaining canola stocks will not drop to zero.’

The function of price is to meter supply out to the demand, adds Blue. Rising prices tend to discourage demand to prevent a shortage of product.

So far this crop year, farmers have delivered an average of 440,000 tonnes per week. During the first 2 weeks of April, Canadian canola

exports and crush has averaged 482,000 tonnes a week. It appears that high canola prices have not yet reduced canola demand.

‘Despite the historically high canola prices, forward crusher margins are reportedly still very profitable. Meal prices have retreated since the highs in January, but vegetable oil prices are still high,’ says Blue.

Vegetable oil prices may drop with the expected increase in palm oil production and price. However, Blue points out 2 unknowns that may affect prices: remaining crusher demand to fulfill forward bookings of canola product sales, and remaining canola export demand for the balance of this crop year.

‘Also subject to adjustment is the size of last year’s canola crop and how much canola goes to the feed and waste category. Crop year-end canola stocks are setting up to be the smallest in years.’

PRRD wants residents, businesses to talk trash f you want to talk hot garbage and the PRRD - keep on reading.

The Peace River Regional District (PRRD) is asking residents to talk trash as it continues with public consultation on the update of its regional solid waste management plan.

Residents, businesses and industry representatives are invited to attend a virtual open house, fill out a survey, ask questions and offer opinions, says PRRD board chair Brad Sperling.

“The PRRD wants all the input we can get as we finish updating the plan in 2021. Effective management of solid waste is a positive for people, businesses and industries in the PRRD. With residents’ help and input, we can create a strong solid waste management plan that addresses local issues and sets out waste reduction goals for the next 15 years.”

Solid waste includes everything that residents, businesses and industries put in their recycling boxes and trash cans, and everything they take to waste transfer stations. It also includes various kinds of waste that are dumped illegally around

the PRRD, some of which is hazardous and is a risk to human health and the environment.

“Dealing with solid waste is one of the regional district’s most important functions. Dealing with it effectively is extremely challenging in northern British Columbia due to transportation costs, the lack of markets for recycled items and waste products, and illegal dumping,” says Sperling. “The regional solid waste management plan guides our management of solid waste in the safest and most cost-effective way possible.”

The virtual open houses began last week and continue until May 6. Residents, businesses and industry representatives are encouraged to visit the community engagement portal haveyoursay. prrd.bc.ca to participate in the consultation process. Participants can complete the survey, ask questions and watch a series of project videos.

The provincial Ministry of Environment and Climate Change Strategy requires all regional districts in British Columbia to have a plan for how their solid waste will be managed and reduced.

Register for Open Farm Days Registration is now open for farms and ranches to be part of the next edition of Open Farm Days.

The weekend showcases Alberta’s agriculture industry and growing the agri-tourism sector. Host farms open their gates to share their agricultural experiences with their urban neighbours and to help them understand where their food comes from.

In 2020, more than 77 host farms were part of Open Farm Days, and 24 culinary events helped connect urban and rural Albertans. Host farms have included traditional farms, livestock (bison, cattle, alpaca, sheep, llama, goat, poultry) farms and ranches, organic operations, corn mazes, wineries, meaderies, craft breweries, stables, petting zoos, along with honey, fruit, vegetable, grain and u-pick farms.

Since 2013, Open Farm Days has seen nearly 134,000 person visits, injecting close to one million dollars into the rural economy through on-farm sales. Since its launch, 711 Alberta farms have been enjoyed by the public.

Host farms can participate either day or both days, and educational materials about hosting are available.

The BC High School Rodeo Association cancelled the rest of its regional, nonchampionship rodeos this week.

BCHSRA President Tyler Kosick made the announcement in a letter online after recent public health restrictions, including the travel ban, made it difficult to go ahead with regional events without violating public health orders.

“Although every member of our board had been planning rodeos and wanted nothing more than to push forward with our spring events, we also understand that we cannot ask our members to disobey a Direct Public Health order,” Kosick wrote.

“Trust me when I say that we have been busy turning over every rock to try and find a solution, loophole, or compassionate member of our government that would be willing to work through the idea of an exemption.”

While the regular season events are cancelled, the association is holding out hope that it can go ahead with its junior and senior provincial championships, as the current restrictions are set to expire following the May long weekend.

The Minister of Agriculture and Agri-Food, the Honourable MarieClaude Bibeau has announced details of two new programs designed to help drive innovation and market development for Canada’s 4,800 chicken, turkey and egg farmers.

These programs, totaling more than $691 million over ten years, respond directly to requests from producer associations and provide full and fair compensation for market impacts from the Comprehensive and Progressive Agreement for Trans-Pacific Partnership (CPTPP).

The Poultry and Egg On-Farm Investment Program will provide close to $630 million over ten years to support poultry and egg farmers through on-farm investments. Producers will be entitled to an amount proportional to their quota holdings. Eligible projects are anything that helps a producer modernize, become more competitive and adapt to changing consumer preferences. This includes new barn construction or upgrading equipment like feeding, watering, lighting, ventilation, heating, and comfort systems that will promote energy efficiency and reduce environmental footprint.

The Government of Canada will contribute up to 70% of the project cost, a ratio increasing to up to 85% for young farmers to help ensure a strong future for Canada’s farms. The intake of applications for this program will launch later this spring.

Funding will be distributed starting in 2021-22, and will be allocated as follows: $347.3 million for chicken producers; $59.6 million for turkey producers; $134 million for egg producers; and, $88.6 million for broiler hatching egg producers.

The Market Development Program for Turkey and Chicken will provide $36.5 million for the Turkey Farmers of Canada and $25 million for the Chicken Farmers of Canada over ten years. This funding will help promotional activities that differentiate Canadian-made products’ reputation for high-

quality, safe and sustainably farmed food that adheres to strict animal welfare standards.

Funding will be distributed to the national industry organizations, who will submit a multi-year strategy to Agriculture and AgriFood Canada for approval. The intake for applications from these organizations launches April 13, 2021.

“The Government is delivering on our commitment to compensate our supplymanaged farmers for losses from recent trade agreements. These investments will help ensure continued growth and prosperity for our poultry and egg farmers, who help keep Canada’s rural communities strong and vibrant.

We have worked hand-in-hand with industry to ensure they have the full and fair support they need to continue to keep our family farms thriving and our grocery shelves full of good Canadian products,” said Bideau.

“This announcement of programing is welcomed and a positive step by the government in support of turkey farmers and supply management in Canada.

These programs, asked for by our industries, will help us grow our customer base and the domestic turkey market, and through on-farm investment enhance long-term competitiveness in preparation for increased imports under the CPTPP. We very much appreciate this commitment by the Federal Government,” addedDarren Ference, Chair, Turkey Farmers of Canada.

Siding, vents and openings Examine siding for locations where embers could accumulate or hide. Inspect vents and openings often to ensure they are in good repair and combustible debris is removed. Stucco, brick, fibre cement boards/panels and poured concrete siding all offer superior fire resistance. Consider upgrading to a non-combustible siding material. Metal products are recommended for vents and vent flashing. Install noncombustible material for all vents and screen with 3 mm screening or fire-rated vents.

Deck Remove combustible debris and vegetation on, around and under decks and other attached structures. This is a key factor in reducing vulnerability to ignition during a wildfire. Select fire-rated composite decking material for the deck and cover the underside of the deck with non-combustible sheathing, such as fibre cement board or metal screening.

Gutters and eaves Keep gutters and eaves clean and clear of combustible debris, such as leaves, twigs and branches. Upgrade to a boxed-in or soffited eave design that is noncombustible. Upgrade gutters and downspouts to non-combustible materials, such as galvanized steel, copper or aluminum. A metal drip edge should be in place as part of the roof assembly.

Understanding your risk The first thing to do is walk around your property to identify wildfire risks. Start with the first 1.5 metres (about 5 feet) around the entire home and any attachments, such as decks.

‘What combustible fuels are you keeping closest to your home?

You want to keep a special eye out for things like dry leaves, grass and twigs, firewood piles, construction materials, and patio furniture. Whenever possible, you want to move these items at least 10 metres from the home or safely store them in a garage or shed,’ says Stewart.

Embers ignite more than half of homes damaged or destroyed by wildfire. Research has shown that structural modifications, like fire-resistant building materials, can reduce the risk of wildfire damage up to 40%. If you’re making important structural modifications and moving those combustible fuels farther away from your home, you can reduce wildfire risk by up to 75%.

Simple steps that make a big impact ‘Here are some simple actions that homeowners can take to address four key areas of the home. Both immediate, rollup-your-sleeves maintenance activities and longer-term planning are included.’

Roof Keep the roof clean and clear of combustible debris, such as leaves, twigs and branches.

Upgrade roof to a Class A ignition resistant roofing material. Class A roofing materials include clay tile, concrete tile, metal and asphalt shingles.

On the the Peace River Forage Association The Peace River Forage Association was started in the summer of 1992. A research & development committee was formed and they developed the goals & objectives by which the Association operates today.

In 1994, Peace River Agriculture Strategic Planning Society funded the BC Forage Council / BC Ministry of Agriculture, Food & Fisheries forage varietals & cultivar trials through our association. This helped the association pinpoint various worthwhile forage activities that could be carried out to the economic benefit of the local farming and ranching sector.

Our history as an organization is a colourful one and worth a read when you have time.

In 1998, a comprehensive work plan was developed that defined a number of forage opportunities. This vision for the association’s ongoing projects was revisited, discussed and updated in 2000.

The Peace River Forage Association of BC began with a dozen committed individuals with a goal of having 100 members. Our association has surpassed that goal. As of November 2006, there were 100 members representing a broad range of areas in the BC Peace River region. It fluctuates from year to year but currently our mailing list of members and friends of forage totals close to 200.

Currently the PRFA of BC Board of Directors includes 7 directors, with 5 committee chairs.

We also have advisors from BC Ministry of Agriculture, Alberta Agriculture, Peace River Regional District and 5 part time, as needed forage contractors. Through funding for R&D projects, the forage association has hired energetic summer students and technicians.
