The newest members of the Alberta Agriculture Hall of Fame are Walter Paszkowski, David Price and George Visser.

Walter Paszkowski was instrumental in laying the foundation for the modern canola industry in Western Canada. His championing of canola as a viable crop for Alberta farmers was central to its rise in significance and importance as one of the key economic drivers of Alberta’s agriculture sector today.

David Price has been an innovator and visionary in swine genetics, production, processing and marketing for more than 50 years. His contribution to the advancement and expansion of pig breeding and marketing in Alberta and across Canada laid the groundwork for future producers’ success.

He was instrumental in giving producers in Alberta a unified voice during his tenure on the Alberta Agriculture Products Marketing Council.

Due to public health measures to contain the spread of COVID-19, the in-person 2020 Agriculture Hall of Fame Ceremony was cancelled. The 2020 inductees will be formally recognized at an event, likely in 2021, when it is safe to gather.

Remember that some things are not for sale The Code Of The West has a code “Remember That Some Things Aren’t For Sale. I thought about this code for a minute and I got to thinking how some things aren’t for sale and how some things can’t be bought.

For instance, if you’ve owned horses for very long, you probably understand what I mean when I say “I’ve got some horses that I could never sell”. I might not be using them anymore, but I’ll buy their feed, trim their feet, deworm them and look after them forever.

They will have a home with me until their last day. They aren’t for sale at any price.

When it comes to horsemanship, there are things that we can buy, but the things that horses like the most can’t be bought. There are three things that jump out at me when I think of the most important things that a horse would pick if they could in their owner, trainer, or rider. Those three things are feel, timing, and emotional fitness. All three are connected as most anything we do with horses are. I don’t know if I’ve ever written about “emotional fitness”. I have mentioned “feel” and “timing” often and, contrary to many people’s beliefs, feel and timing are not things you are born with, but they can be learned, developed and improved. The same goes for emotional fitness. If you have a program you follow to develop your horsemanship skills, the program should be set up so that the exercises and lay out of that program will help you develop and improve our feel, timing and along with that emotional fitness as you move upwards through the program.

Feel and timing comes from reading the horse correctly. You must understand what is going on with the horse, what is he thinking in order to use the correct feel and timing for the situation. We are not born being able to read a horse. That ability comes over time and only if we are trying to grow and improve.

The program should be designed for us to move forward and we will run into difficulties

that we will need to work through. Generally, it always requires us to have better feel and timing and a higher level of emotional fitness.

What is emotional fitness? In short, it is staying calm in all situations and it’s very impressive. Hopefully, we have had a role model or someone we know that we have been around in our lives that we have been able to watch, learn and admire and that just doesn’t seem to get rattled no matter what is going on. They can deal with the tough situations while others are panicking, freezing up, yelling, crying, scared, or mad which are all emotions that don’t serve us well in most situations and for sure not with our horses.

These emotions get in the way of good feel and timing.

As luck would have it, we can always get better in all three areas. The journey is actually quite fun and something to be very proud of. Your horses will be forever thankful and they will show it in the way they behave.

As I have worked on my horsemanship, I have had to continue to develop in all three areas and any one of the three could stop me from moving forward. It has become something I look forward to always try to get better because it shows up in my horses and, frankly, in other areas of my life. I work towards having a horse that is emotionally fit so it only stands to reason and fair that if we ask it of them we need to ask it of ourselves.

It makes them safer to ride and a pleasure to be around.

Feel, timing and emotional fitness are three separate but very much connected entities that have great value to your horse, friends and family. They have great value but we won’t find these things for sale in a catalogue or on a store shelf or on a website. When we are playing with our horses and emotions are getting away from us, it is an opportunity to improve how long it goes on and how bad it gets. Lack of emotional fitness will affect our feel and timing which, in turn, creates the horse we have or contributes to the situation we are in such as a horse that won’t load, or rears up, pulls back, is bad with his feet, prances around, spooks, is hard to catch and so on. If any of that happens, how do you handle it? What do your emotions do?

Staying calm, thinking, figuring out why and start developing the horse so we don’t have these or other problems is the answer. Getting emotional in anyway will not fix the problem and, most likely, makes it worse. The best techniques and exercises are only as good as the feel, timing and emotions behind it.

Some of the best things just aren’t for sale.

ICYMI: Farmers information service opens in FSJ A new Farmers Information Service office has opened in Fort St. John, which the province says will help Peace region farmers and landowners navigate their interactions with the oil and gas industry.

The agriculture ministry says the service “provides information at no charge to help landowners with questions or challenges they experience with oil and gas development, and to help them access opportunities that come from such development.”

“She is well versed with the challenges rural landowners can face when working with the industry,” the ministry noted.

The FIS office will be housed in Fort St. John, and is developing both web resources and plans for in-person meetings that follow COVID-19 protocols to assist land owners in different communities in the region, the ministry said.

The service is jointly funded by the Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Fisheries; the Ministry of Energy, Mines and Low Carbon Innovation; the Peace River Regional District; and the BC Oil and Gas Commission.

Beef cattle nutrition

By Dr. Charlotte Corbett Cows are ruminants, meaning that they have four stomachs. The easiest way to keep a cow healthy is to make sure the rumen is well fed. Cattle need energy in the form of carbs, protein and fats as well as vitamins and minerals. Cattle that have all their nutrional requirements met get rebred faster, raise heavier calves and fight off disease. Those cows that are thin or lacking in minerals are much more susceptible to disease and infertility, leading to more open or late cows in your herd.

Body Condition Scoring: Cattle are scored on a scale from 1 to 5, with 1 being too thin and 5 being too fat. A score of 3 is ideal.

Cows that are 2 or less going into winter or into calving are going to have an extremely difficult time raising a good calf and getting rebreed in time. Looking at your cows in pasture can give you an idea, but being able to put your hands on them, especially in winter, is the best way to judge where they are. Thin cows going into winter need more feed to keep them warm and it can be very difficult to put weight on them once the temperatures decrease. The Beef Cattle Research Council

Energy: Having enough energy in feed is very important for cattle. Feeding less than required not only affects the cows now, but will have detrimental effects on your calf crop. Digestible energy is the amount that the cow can actually digest from the feed.

There are losses in feed as well: feces, urine, gases produced in the rumen and heat energy are all lost energy. The energy left over after these losses is the Net Energy. This energy is what she uses for maintaining her body condition, lactation, growth and reproduction – in that order. If a cow isn’t consuming enough food, she won’t make enough milk for her calf and she will have a very difficult time getting pregnant. Processing feed (ex. rolling oats) can increase digestibility of feed.

During extremely cold periods cows may need to be supplements with grain to meet all their energy needs and stay warm. Once the temperature is below -20oC, give an extra one lb. of grain or pellets per head per day for each 5 degrees below -20oC. For example, if it is -30oC outside, give an extra 2 lbs. per cow.

Protein: Protein isn’t just important for building muscle and growing calves. A feed with low protein causes the feed to slow down in the digestive tract, which in turn makes cows eat less. As a general rule of thumb, cows need 7% protein for maintenance and early gestation, 9% protein for late pregnancy and 11% during lactation. Testing your feed can be a huge benefit in deciding what hay to feed in early and late winter.

Minerals: Cattle need minerals throughout the year.

Mineral deficiencies result in decreased fertility, smaller calves, and increased rates of infection. The best way to feed mineral is a free choice, loose mineral.

Some cows won’t spend the time to lick salt blocks and other cattle will eat way too much

of the molasses blocks. Feed stores usually have a winter mineral and a summer mineral.

The winter mineral contains Vitamins A, D and E. These vitamins are present in green, fresh grass but are depleted in hay. During winter, they need these vitamins added to their mineral. In the summer, feeding a loose mineral without added vitamins is fine as long as they have access to green grass.

Reproduction: Since reproduction is the lowest priority on a cow’s list of energy demands she needs to have adequate energy in order to get her rebred. Open and late cows at pregnancy checking are often caused by poor nutrition. Mineral deficiencies, poor pasture management, poor nutritional value of the pastures and thin cows at calving are all things that prevent a cow from getting rebred.

Testing: Testing your feed before winter can decrease your costs in the long run. Knowing that your cattle have adequate nutrition can help avoid disasters during calving. Thin cows and overly fat cows are both at increased risk of calving difficulties and weak calves.

Overfeeding can increase feed costs as well, so knowing what is in your feed can help you plan what to feed. There are tools available to help producers understand feed analysis and how to apply those to their winter feeding plans.

Paszkowski to join the Alberta Agriculture Hall of Fame ‘Looking back at choice of careers, I would gladly choose farming again,’ says Walter Paszkowski, one of 3 inductees into the Alberta Agriculture Hall of Fame.

‘There is nothing more stimulating than to watch things grow. Few lifetime undertakings offer such a vast array of opportunities and challenges as that of providing food to keep the world’s rapidly growing population fed.’

Walter Paszkowski’s championing of canola as a viable crop for Alberta farmers was central to its rise in significance to become one of the key economic drivers of Alberta’s agriculture sector today, contributing $2 billion to the provincial economy annually.

He has also been a vigorous promotor of trade, investment, value-added opportunities and economic development in Alberta. He has participated in many trade missions around the world, continually promoting agriculture in Alberta on the international stage.

Paszkowski worked with a number of groups, including the

local Chamber of Commerce on issues affecting local business and the agricultural community.

And his brainchild, the Growing the North Conference, continues to be an important event focusing on economic development in the region.

As Minister, he is particularly proud of the work done on valueadded in the province, the key to enhancing agriculture returns

in production, processing and exporting Alberta products. He is also proud of his work with the Prince Rupert Port Authority, where shipments reached record levels during his tenure.

‘There will always be a need for one of the world’s oldest professions. Agriculture remains our future and not our past,’ adds Paszkowski.

Walter Paszkowski joins David Price and George Visser as the 2020 inductees into the Hall of Fame.

Due to public health measures to contain the spread of COVID-19, the in-person 2020 Agriculture Hall of Fame Ceremony was cancelled. The 2020 inductees will be formally recognized at an event, likely in 2021, when it is safe to gather.

Appointments to the Canadian Grain Commission Minister of Agriculture and Agri-Food Marie-Claude Bibeau, announced the appointment of Doug Chorney as Chief Commissioner and Patty Rosher as Assistant Chief Commissioner of the Canadian Grain Commission.

Doug Chorney has been an active player in the grain industry for 24 years, and was appointed Assistant Chief Commissioner of the Canadian Grain Commission in 2017. He has been the acting Chief Commissioner since June 2020. The term for his appointment is three years, effective immediately.

Patty Rosher has held various leadership and advisory positions over her 25-year career in the agriculture sector, most recently as General Manager of the Keystone Agricultural Producers.

The term of her appointment is four years, effective February 15, 2021.

In 2016, the Government of Canada implemented an appointment process that is transparent and merit-based, to search for Canadians who reflect public sector values of respect for democracy, people, integrity, stewardship, and excellence.

paved,” said Kjos, noting even a small amount of paving would be an economic boon.

Oil and gas, forestry, and agriculture remain the major economic users of rural roads.

Some are already paved, but don’t support legal axle loading yearround.

Kjos told the PRRD in June that the rural road system was in dire need of support, noting 104 days of road bans last spring – the fourth longest stretch in 40 years.

A grid system has been proposed, going east to west and north to south, to ensure access and axle loading throughout agricultural areas.

“We need to have some corridors running north and south, and lateral corridors tying those together, so that industry can continue to function,” Kjos said, adding residents often travel upwards of 10 kilometres to connect to a paved road.

There are around 400 kilometres of road in the region needing repair, to the tune of $1 million per kilometre.

Meanwhile, there were at last count seven separate slides threatening to take out the Upper Halfway Road, while the bill to fix the Farell Creek hill near Hudson’s Hope sits at $100 million.

The provincial roads budget for the region was only $20 million last year. Adding pullouts and gravelling, along with brushing and ditching are also among the priorities identified by the taskforce.

“We can’t take $100 million and pour it into that one hill, when we

“Taylor came into this with the idea that those roads in Baldonnel were important to us,” Fraser said. “But I’ve learned in the last four years how important these rural roads are, all of them to the economies of Taylor, Fort St John, and really all the communities in the Peace River region.”

Hudson’s Hope Mayor and taskforce committee member Dave Heiberg commented on the value of industry users and MOTI working together with the taskforce.

“The thing that impressed me the most is the willingness of these people to work together.

I haven’t seen that before,” said Heiberg.

Pandemic tops the list of disruptors in 2021, say FCC The pandemic was undoubtedly the single biggest shock to the Canadian agriculture and food industry in 2020, and its impact will have some lasting effects, according to Farm Credit Canada’s (FCC) economics team.

“A year ago, we were saying climate change, protectionism and automation had the most potential to not only significantly reshape Canada’s agriculture and food industry, but also disrupt the global economy,” said J.P. Gervais, FCC’s chief agricultural economist.

“I think it’s safe to say the emergence of the global pandemic has added fuel to that fire of change and now tops our list of most significant trends to watch in 2021.”

According to FCC’s two-part blog series, the upheaval caused by the pandemic continues to test global supply chains and disrupt trade patterns around the world, as countries apply various measures to stop the spread of the virus. It has slowed or shuttered momentarily food processing facilities, disrupted movement of Canadian agriculture commodities and processed food to several export markets, and significantly altered consumer buying habits, especially when it comes to in-home dining and grocery shopping.

At the same time, geopolitical tensions added to the uncertainty brought on by the global pandemic, shifting trade flows. To make matters worse, climate change continued to wreak havoc in agriculture, spawning extreme weather events in parts of the world.

All told, 2020 will go down as a year of major disruption on almost every front.

However, as much as the pandemic has caused supply chain disruptions, it has also created an opportunity for Canada to further entrench itself as one of the world’s most trusted and reliable suppliers of food and agriculture commodities, according to Gervais.

“The pandemic has only heightened consumer demand for locally sourced food, accelerating what was already a prepandemic trend,” he said. “At the same time, the needs of major food importers and our key export markets will grow even if economic uncertainty continues to prevail in 2021.”

There are clear signals pointing to strong domestic and global demand. He notes, for example, higher savings and pent-up demand that could drive growth in red meat consumption, which could be bolstered by the possible reopening of food services in 2021. Globally, weather challenges could strengthen import demand of major grains, oilseeds and pulses.

Global supply chains are still signaling that Canadian exports are important. High-income economies, such as Japan, the United States and the European Union, continue to have the potential to further tap into Canadian exports.

“If the stars align and we are able to quickly turn the corner on this pandemic in 2021, we could see an economic rebound that allows us to mostly recover from last year’s 4.2 per cent global economic contraction,” Gervais said.

“By meeting the needs of importers during a pandemic, Canada has an opportunity to

further strengthen its position as one of the world’s leading agriculture exporters.”

The big question remains how the health and economic fallouts from the pandemic will intersect with climate change and geopolitical tensions to impact agricultural production and trade this year.

“While there are many challenges on the road ahead, there are also many opportunities for Canadian food producers and processors.”

Gervais said. “The key is to have a good risk management plan to ensure your business remains strong and viable to take advantage of those opportunities as they arise.”

Over the last 35 years that SARDA has hosted the Trade Show, it has become one of SARDA Ag Research’s prominent extension events and fundraising opportunities. Due to the COVID-19 restrictions and facilities’ limitations, the Board decided that we could not hold a successful event and protect exhibitors and visitors. The Smoky Ag Research Agricultural Trade Show will continue in March 2023.

The very first Trade Show in the region was organized by the several agri-businessmen in 1984, who envisioned an event that would provide an opportunity for agriculture companies to display new equipment, chemicals, fertilizers, seed and technology directly to the farming community. The local Chamber of Commerce organized the Trade Show in 1985. In 1986, the Smoky Applied Research and Demonstration Association (SARDA) was incorporated, and the association agreed to take over the organization of the event. The 1986 and 1987 Trade Shows were both organized by SARDA staff and Directors. Planning and presenting an annual Trade Show proved to be overwhelming for the small organization and community. In 1987, The Trade Show became a biennial event organized by SARDA Ag Research.

The Trade Show is a perfect forum for farmers and industry to connect and work together. Cannabis Zoning Bylaw Approved At its December 2020 meeting, the Peace River Regional District board of directors approved Zoning Amendment Bylaw No. 2377 (Cannabis) 2020. This outlines clear and definitive requirements for the regulation of cannabis retail establishments in the PRRD. With approval of this bylaw, where cannabis retail stores are permitted, the bylaw states that they may not be located on properties within: • •

200 metres from a parcel containing a school or day care; and 100 metres from any parcel containing a park, place of worship, medical clinic, rehabilitation centre, or other cannabis-related business.

Until approval of this bylaw, cannabis-related businesses were prohibited throughout all zones in PRRD zoning bylaws. Any location that was proposed for the distribution and/or sale of cannabis was required to apply for and obtain a zoning bylaw amendment.

Although the PRRD Cannabis-Related Business Policy directs that zoning amendments for the purpose of cannabis-related business will only be considered within commercial and industrial zones, it did not provide guidance for where cannabis-related businesses should be located, as it pertains to the protection of public health and safety, and proximity to schools, parks and churches.

Solid Waste Management Plan Update Dealing with solid waste effectively is extremely challenging in northern British Columbia due to the cost of transportation, the lack of markets for recycled items and waste products, and illegal dumping.

The Peace River Regional District’s Regional Solid Waste Management Plan helps us manage solid waste in the safest and most cost-effective way possible.

Last updated in 2016, the PRRD’s plan sets out specific waste reduction goals, along with guiding principles to support these goals; however, the region’s solid waste management needs have changed and PRRD staff have been working to review and update the regional plan to better reflect and address emerging local issues.

Staff and consultants presented a draft updated plan to the PRRD board at its December meeting. This spring, staff will bring the draft plan to the general community for feedback. The PRRD wants your input as we finish updating the plan in 2021.

The Ministry of Environment requires all regional districts in British Columbia to have a plan for how solid waste will be managed and reduced. Effective management of solid waste is a positive for people, businesses and industries in the PRRD. Solid waste includes everything that residents, businesses and industries put in their recycling boxes and trash cans, and everything they take to waste transfer stations. It also includes various kinds of waste that are dumped illegally around the PRRD, some of which is hazardous and is a risk to human health and the environment.

Watch for opportunities to contribute to the PRRD’s updated plan throughout spring 2021, including a series of surveys and webinars. With your help and input, we can create a strong solid waste management plan that addresses emerging local issues and sets out waste reduction goals for the next 15 years.

Eric Hodges, resident of Beaverlodge, AB, area, passed away peacefully at the Beaverlodge Hospital on Wednesday, December 30, 2020, at the age of 82 years.

Eric is survived by his devoted wife of 60 years, Barb; daughter Bev (Bob) Marshall; son Darrell (Trudy) Hodges; son Keith (Kerriley) Hodges; his much-loved nine grandchildren; and eight greatgrandchildren; his brother; two sisters in-law; as well as a large extended family.

Due to the COVID-19 restrictions, a memorial service will be held at a later date.

Eric’s full obituary may be viewed on Oliver’s Funeral home website.

From the desk of Belt Drive Betty Planning motorcycle events is a challenge at the best of times, Mother Nature can play absolute havoc with an event and so can a short riding season.

Throw in COVID-19 restrictions and you have a curveball that has you hustling sideways as fast as you can.

Instead of panicking, our crew at the Canadian Motorcycle Tourism Association started looking for the bright side. Our president, Bob Ross, and a friend of his came up with the idea of hosting some sort of poker run where people’s times of arrival could be choreographed. Our Vice President, Sheila Willis and I had some in depth discussions and then brought in other businesses and the next thing you knew, we had a winner.

This summer’s event is simply called Rumble Alberta: It features 44 Touring Challenge Routes in 5 regions of the province that will impact 400450 mostly rural communities.

6-10 Adventure Rider Challenge Routes as well for those in jeeps and on dual sport and adventure bikes.

THE BASICS ARE: The event kicks off on the May Long Weekend and runs until the end of September giving you 4.5 months to complete as many routes and challenges as you want. The more challenges you complete, the more points you

I grew up on a family farm and worked on the farm while going to school and University. The farm dates back to 1911 when my grandfather rode horseback over the Edson Trail to homestead.

After University, I continued to grain farm while working offfarm in my law practice. The farm is now 4th generation and owned by our son and his family, running a purebred Angus cattle operation.
