He adds that during a typical growing season, barley prices usually decline into August as producers begin to empty their bins before harvest.

‘Late in the crop year, some disappointed malt barley producers move barley supplies not accepted as malt grade into the feed market.

Particularly in years of tight supply, feed barley prices remain strong in the summer until new crop barley becomes available.’

Seasonal prices are calculated by taking the average price for a certain period, such as a week or month, and comparing it to the average price over the year. Seasonal prices are often plotted on a bar graph, with the annual price average as Index 100. Usually, such a calculation uses data from several years, which reduces the influence of contra-seasonal price moves that happen in some years, usually from a supply reduction.

Feed the soil and let the soil feed the plant It sounds simple, in theory. Feed the soil and let the soil feed the plant. Healthy soil creates healthy plants. If you want strong, healthy, high yielding wheat, you must create a field full of soil ready and receptive to growing wheat. This also precludes that a field with soil ready and receptive for wheat will need to be different than a field ready and receptive for canola, barley or oats.

Conversely, if you want to control or eliminate weeds and factors that affect a strong and high-yielding crop, then you can use the soil to create conditions that are not favourable to weeds like foxtail, allow your crop to access all the nutrients required for growth and allow your crop to handle extended wet or dry conditions.

And that is the quick and easy theory behind regenerative agriculture.

Sounds easy, especially for the modern farmer; people believed to be the guardians of the land and up-to-date with all the modern equipment and techniques made available to them.

However, the reality is that, like the local merchant or manufacturer, most farmers learned their operational techniques and habits from their father, who learned it from his father, who learned it from his father, and so on. Lost during that timeline were the agricultural fundamentals that were lost when farming moved from better to faster.

Albrecht, Neal Kinsey and Charles Walters, master consultants delivering a more “hands on” message to allow the modern farmer to understand how soil fertility that can easily be put to use in their fields. Upon extended analysis, Klassen determined a soil imbalance was probably the most likely cause.

Peter says that local analysts will meet with the farmer on their fields to take samples and work with them to establish a balanced nutritional environment designed specifically for the desired crop to create a custom farm soil management program that encourages soil fertility, healthy plants, weed, insect and microbe control and, ultimately, higher yields.

Northern Health patients, residents enjoying more BC foods

Breakfast Brief OATS PRICES TO OUTPERFORM BARLEY IN 2020/21?

Patients at hospitals and residential care facilities in Northern Health will enjoy more B.C. food options on their meal trays, resulting in an increased local food experience and greater opportunities for B.C. farmers, fishers, ranchers and food processors.

(FarmLead.com, Sept 23, 2020) Grain markets are red today as we look into barley and oats prices while the futures complex continues its pause/pullback from the past few weeks’ rally. While exports sales to China for corn and soybeans continued yesterday, harvest 2020 is progressing across the U.S. with 8% of corn and 6% of soybeans harvested as of Sunday.

With some dry weather on the horizon for the Midwest, it should allow harvest activity to accelerate, which intuitively means more supply coming to market. Conversely, these dry conditions do present some potential concerns of soil moisture profiles for the Plant 2021 campaign, but that’s still a long way off. Looking south of the equator, Argentina and Brazil have some much-needed rains in the forecast and that’s also weighing on grain markets this week, but we’ll see if the beer clouds materialize or not!

Western Canada is likely to get some dry weather as Harvest 2020 finishes up, according to Weatherlogics, and given the current pace so far, things could be pretty close to wrapped up by the end of September.

On the flipside, over the weekend, some freezing temperatures were seen across Ontario, likely impacting corn and soybean yield potential, which, as we all know, is incredibly frustrating, given how close the crop is to being taken off!

Internationally, Russian wheat prices continue to increase as export demand remains high, but farmers there are holding onto their harvest. Worth noting is that China is looking to import more wheat this year, but Russian supplies are having a tough time cracking into the Chinese market. In 2019/20, China’s top 5 sourcing options (in order of largest to smallest) were France, Canada, Australia, Kazakhstan, and U.S., but, based on exports reports to date, it looks like the U.S. is getting a stronger look in 2020/21.

Health facilities are an important market for B.C. foods. Some examples of current B.C. produced or processed products and suppliers to Northern Health’s facilities include:

Barley Prices Inching Back Up on Demand

Barley prices in Ukraine have jumped about 20% since July as demand from China has supported greater exports, and thus better barley prices for country’s growers. More specifically, Ukraine’s barley exports to China in the first 2 months of their 2020/21 crop year is nearly double what it was over the same time frame a year ago, with 1.3 MMT sailed. Historically, a lot of Ukraine’s barley exports go to Saudi Arabia, but the Saudis might be buying more Australian since a large crop is expected from growers in the Land Down Undaa. Further, China’s 80.5% import tariff on Australian barley exports to the People’s Republic has basically priced them out of the market.

However, the Ukrainian 2020 barley harvest is estimated to be 18% smaller than last year with 7.3 MMT combined, according to the country’s Economy Ministry. Similarly, barley exports are expected to slide by about a third to 3.34 MMT as more product is kept at home (likely for food security reasons, similar to the wheat exports restrictions that we saw being discussed by Ukrainian officials just a few months ago).

Through Feed BC, the Ministry of Agriculture is working with supplychain partners to increase opportunities for northern producers and processors interested in selling to B.C.’s public-sector institutions.

Business development skills, guidance on how to sell to institutions, and targeted training for more northern producers to acquire food safety certifications required by health facilities will help support food production and open new markets in the region.

That said, we know China is buying more Canadian barley exports as they try to replace their longstanding dance partner in Australia. In that vein, through the first six weeks of the 2020/21 crop year, Canadian barley exports are nearly quadruple what they were a year ago, with 227,000 MT sailed thus far.

This strong pace of international demand isn’t exactly being matched on the domestic side,however, feed barley prices continue to inch higher (up about 4% week-over-week) as harvest is onto the back half of being complete.

Oats Prices to Improve More than Barley?

For domestic oats prices, so far we’ve seen levels stay relatively strong, compared to seasonal lows during previous harvest times. Supporting the current floor for oats prices is the reality that, in many places, yields aren’t really living up to the expectations that were had a month ago, albeit quality is still good. In last Monday’s Breakfast Brief, I discussed the updated production estimate from Statistics Canada, which included 4.5 MMT of oats and 10.25 MMT of barley. For the former, this was unchanged from the first estimate Stats Can put out on August 31st, while the barley harvest was about 291,000 MT smaller. Yearover-year, the Canadian oats harvest is expected to be about 7% larger, whereas barley output is just 1% below last year’s haul.

Northern Health supports the health and wellness of more than 300,000 British Columbians in an area covering more than 600,000 square kilometres and operates 27 hospitals and residential care facilities serving over 1.9 million meals per year.

Michael Hoefer, regional director, capital planning and support services, Northern Health, said they are committed.

“To continuing to work with our food suppliers and food distributors to include even more B.C. foods on our menu. Supporting BC producers while preparing healthy meals with local ingredients for our patients and residents meets the values of our communities in the North.”

Oats prices are also being supported by a strong start to the 2020/21 marketing campaign, as nearly 210,000 MT have sailed in the first 6 weeks, up about 40% year-over-year. From local demand, Canadian domestic disappearance of oats is up 54%, while producer deliveries are tracking one-third higher yearover-year with nearly 432,000 MT trucked in to CGC licensed facilities.

While we’ll get an updated estimate from Agriculture Canada this week, right now, 2020/21 oats ending stocks are pegged at 1 MMT. I think that number could come down by maybe 100,000 or 200,000 MT, but we’ll need to continue to see a strong pace of exports into the winter months. Potentially impacting Canadian oats exports, however, is a larger U.S. harvest, pegged at 942,000 MT, or a 22% bump over last year’s 771,000 MT output.

Overall, I’m not expecting oats prices to hit last year’s levels, but I do think we could inch up from where we’re currently at, as it’s something that’s historically seen over the winter months. That said, here are some decent pricing options for deferred delivery and locking in oats prices at a profit should never be considered a bad thing! The main takeaway here, however, is that oats demand is likely to be stronger than barley in 2020/21, as it’s a food staple (i.e. oatmeal) and the COVID-19-related drop in commercial demand isn’t a stark as that for malt barley demand, something I wrote about back in June. However, I do think that feed barley prices will remain relatively strong, but like oats prices, not as strong as last year.

Empowering women leadership in the agriculture and agri-food sector OVID-19 has magnified systemic issues and longstanding inequalities, and the Government of Canada is working hard to provide equal opportunities for all Canadians.

Today, the Honourable Marie-Claude Bibeau, Minister of Agriculture and AgriFood, held a virtual roundtable discussion with women entrepreneurs from across Canada’s agricultural food chain, focussing on the opportunities and challenges that exist for them in the agriculture and agrifood sector.

During the roundtable, Minister Bibeau announced that Farm Credit Canada’s Women Entrepreneur Program has already helped 1,391 women with loans under this program, totalling more than $994.5 million. This is already nearly double the $500-million amount initially announced in March of 2019 for this three-year program, demonstrating the entrepreneurial spirit of hundreds of women in Canada’s agriculture and agri-food sector.

This program is part of the federal Women Entrepreneurship Strategy, a $5-billion investment. In agriculture, there are over 75,000 female farm operators, representing some 28.7% of all farm operators in Canada – a number which continues to modestly increase. The Women Entrepreneurship Program is expected to increase this proportion.

During the roundtable, Minister Bibeau, in her capacity as the first-ever female Minister of Agriculture and Agri-Food, highlighted her personal commitment towards greater inclusion of women in the agriculture and agri-food sector. She stressed the need to overcome barriers to equality that research shows include: work-life balance, skills

training, networking and mentorship, access to information management, and financial barriers.

As part of the Women Entrepreneur Program, borrowers can also have up to $1,000 of their processing fees waived to reinvest into both personal and professional development that best suits their individual and business needs. The funds, for example, can be used to pay tuition for a college or to attend in-person or online learning events.

Farm Credit Canada has been offering a series of events to inspire and complement a broad range of meaningful skill development opportunities.

Over the past several decades, the proportion of female farm operators has increased. In 1996, women represented 25.3% of farm operators. By 2016, that proportion had risen to 28.7%, accounting for 77,830 female farm operators.

Farm Credit Canada is Canada’s leading agriculture and food lender, a self-sustaining Crown corporation with a loan portfolio of more than $38 billion, and 97 offices across Canada with more than 1,900 employees.

According to Statistics Canada, employment loss among women was more than 2% higher than for men in the first three months of the pandemic. Despite some recovery by July, when we saw that women (+3.4%) were regaining employment faster than men (+1.5%), jobs recovery for women continued to lag, particularly for female youth aged 15 to 24, the group furthest from their pre-pandemic employment levels (-17.9%).

Public feedback on ALR residential flexibility intentions paper available The Province is releasing a “what we heard” summary report on the Ministry of Agriculture’s proposed policy direction to increase residential flexibility in the Agricultural Land Reserve (ALR).

The report summarizes feedback from individuals, associations and local governments in B.C. in response to policy considerations outlined in the ministry’s intentions paper on residential flexibility in the ALR. Feedback was received between Jan. 27 and May 17, 2020.

The intentions paper was government’s response to concerns heard during ALR engagement sessions in fall 2019. Both the public and stakeholders stated more options for small additional residences were needed.

Heavy Duty and Automotive Service

The paper outlined policy options under consideration for small additional residences that continue to maintain government’s core objectives under the Agricultural Land Commission Act. These policy options preserve and encourage the use of ALR land for agriculture.

Quality Service without Compromise

To allow time for the development of new regulations, the grandfathering period for manufactured homes in the ALR is being extended to July 31, 2021. Landowners in the ALR will have until then to obtain the required permits and authorizations to place a manufactured additional residence for immediate family on their property, without having to apply to the Agricultural Land Commission.

The ministry is working to develop regulatory changes that are consistent with the intentions paper.

Potatoes and precision irrigation Towards Climate-Robust Irrigation Water Management for Potato Production is now in the second year of its 4-year run. The project is investigating if precision irrigation can help increase water use efficiency and potato crop yields in Alberta.

‘But,’ she adds, ‘nobody has really figured to what extent that would benefit crops in Alberta. It’s relevant to look into that because water availability won’t increase in the next decade. High value crops like potatoes are very sensitive to water availability. We need to get a better hold on water use efficiency and using what we have in a smarter way.’

The research team is working with 5 potato growers and is follows them throughout their growing season on sites located near Vauxhall, Bow Island and in the Taber-Coaldale area during the project.

‘Every year we have 5 fields with potatoes and we map out the elevation with a drone,’ she adds. ‘We install moisture sensors in different points in their fields, we take samples we do extra soil moisture surveys and we determine the yields afterwards at all these different locations.’

AURORA

The team brings together the characteristics of the field’s landscape, the variability of soil types in the field, and then links that to the dynamics of soil moisture. They also look into the farmer’s irrigation strategies.

Appels says that an interesting factor has come into play this year. ‘A nice feature of the past 2 years is that last year was really dry so there was a lot of irrigation going on. This year, we had quite a wet June, which increases the differences in a landscape for a period of time. We’re hoping to interpret that difference in weather and how it affects what farmers should be doing with irrigation following a lot of precipitation.’

By following farmers in the field and with the data that the team collects, Appels says that they will be able to run a lot of ‘what if’ scenarios with models.

‘We can figure out what would have happened to this crop if they had irrigated with applications of varying size, or applied at a different frequency, or used an irrigation threshold based on moisture content. By following the farmers, we can figure out reasonable management margins. So, for example, if you adopt a certain technology, and you get a 10% yield increase, but you also have to spend 30% more of your time managing your irrigation, it might not be feasible. By working with these farmers, we can tie it to more realistic situations, which is really quite unique.’

This project is a partnership between Lethbridge College’s Centre for Applied Research, Innovation and Entrepreneurship and Potato Growers of Alberta.

Bull Fall Checklist By: Dr. Carmen Schneider As bulls are coming home from pasture it is worth investing some time into them this fall to make things easier come spring. Decisions need to be made if bulls are to be culled. A lot of money can be saved if this is decided now rather than in the spring and will help plan for bull shopping.

Pay close attention to body condition. A good breeding bull should have lost a large part of their condition as they should have been busy over the last months. However, if they are too skinny they may be breeding too hard or spending too much time fighting if they are in a multi sire herd. Conversely, if they are in excellent condition they may not have been spending enough time breeding.

This could mean they have poor libido, are painful, or just lazy breeders.

Perform a thorough distance exam of all of them. Look for swellings, abscesses or wounds. Some injuries may be able to be dealt with now or if it is permanent the bull can be culled now rather than at semen testing time.

If any bulls had a swelling in the prepuce area previously these should be evaluated by a vet as well as an old injury could cause permanent scarring. Take a look at testicle size. Any enlarged or small testicles could mean issues with fertility. These can be semen tested a few weeks after being pulled to evaluate fertility.

Lameness issues are very common in bulls so evaluate every bull’s feet. Refer to last issue’s article on bovine lameness for details.

Again, it is worth evaluating this now rather than culling them for an issue in the spring.

With any bulls that have other issues, poor feet should be another strike against them.

Remember that bulls have strong genetic power in your herd so breeding a bull with poor feet conformation quickly works its way into your herd.

Introducing everyone at the same time can be helpful to avoid too much fighting. If you have any real troublemakers it may be worth keeping these separate or considering culling them if they will just hurt the rest of your bull group.

A good housing system for your bulls will help get the ones you do intend to keep into tip top shape for next year’s breeding season. Your bull pen should be big enough to avoid fights but small enough that necessary resources are readily available. Any bull pen should have good fencing with extra wires to keep them in as they tend to be destructive especially as we start to approach spring. If you set them up in an area that is removed from the first cycling cows in the spring, that may also save fights and break-outs. The pen should be well protected from the elements and will need to

If you had separate breeding groups the previous year and know which bulls sired which calves, time should also be invested into comparing your calf crop and reviewing your calving records. If any of your bulls are causing calving difficulties or throwing calves with poor gains these might be ones you do not want to count on again.

Bulls should be re-introduced slowly

have good bedding throughout the winter to avoid frost bite to testicles. Provide several different spots for bedding as bulls low on the totem pole may get chased off bedding piles.

Have a plan for a good nutrition program all winter long to have them in excellent body condition come spring. Ideally, use a program like cow-bytes with feed tests done at a lab.

Loose mineral and salt blocks should be available all winter as well.

Invest some time into your bull battery this fall to save yourself a headache next

Supporting rural ranchers, abattoirs to boost food security

Ranchers and abattoir operators in British Columbia are contributing to improve rural food supply and food security in the province, as part of ongoing government efforts to increase livestock production and processing in rural communities.

The Ministry of Agriculture has released an intentions paper with suggested policy changes to meat processing in rural areas of the province that prioritize food safety and animal welfare. The policy changes will also increase economic opportunities and strengthen B.C.’s provincial food system.

Policy changes being shared with ranchers, abattoirs, local governments and health authorities for consideration include:

increasing the amount of meat that can be processed annually by Class D and E licence holders, and expanding the criteria of who and where their meat can be sold to; developing alternative models of licensing mobile abattoirs to improve service for smaller-scale producers; exploring a pilot program for conducting certain inspection components virtually; and renaming the current “Class A, B, D and E licenses” to more intuitive categories.

The ministry is also collecting input on a number of topics to support public health and a safe meat supply, such as: updating licensee training on slaughter practice, animal welfare and food safety to ensure provincially consistent and effective learning opportunities for rural producers;

revising the code of practice for abattoir operators with required standard operating procedures to bring consistent practices and improved clarity for administrators and operators; and increasing the frequency of government inspector visits to rural abattoirs to an annual basis to ensure awareness and compliance with all requirements.

This is how to help avoid harvest-related fatigue ‘Too many farmers push themselves, especially during the really busy times,’ says Kenda Lubeck, farm safety awareness coordinator for Alberta Agriculture and Forestry. ‘Too often, it’s a case of ‘I’m going to finish that field tonight no matter what.’ Health and safety is a worker’s most valuable asset nothing should come before.’

Many times fatigue creeps up on a person and this makes it difficult to recognize. In addition to feeling sleepy and tired, some common symptoms of fatigue include: headaches, dizziness and blurry vision slow reflexes and reactions, poor concentration feeling irritable, moody and short tempered aching, weak muscles ‘We often see safety as being all about equipment and guards,’ she says, ‘but the most important safety tool a person can have is

their attitude and subsequent decisions. That could mean taking a 20 minute snooze when you are exhausted, or having another person lined up to spell you off.’

She offers these suggestions that farmers can do to ward off fatigue: Get adequate sleep. This means parking your worries at the bedroom door and regularly getting a good night’s rest.

Eat nourishing food to keep your mind and body sharp.

Stay hydrated with plenty of water.

Incorporate some healthy activity in your day’s work. Many times fall work equals long hours operating the same equipment. If you find yourself in the cab of a tractor for hours on end, be sure to stop periodically and go for a walk to stretch out your muscles.

Plan for physical and mental demands. This may mean adding workers to your team to alleviate the demands of harvest work, keeping a promise to yourself

that you will take a well-deserved break after a set amount of time, and not making critical decisions while you are weary.

‘Although the human factor is a significant cause of farm-related

hazards, your safety is about the choices you make,’ she adds. ‘It just takes a moment to make a decision that could literally be the difference between life and death.’

Helping growers meet demand for Canadian-made organics Member of Parliament for Pontiac, William Amos, on behalf of the Honourable Marie-Claude Bibeau, Minister of Agriculture and Agri-Food, announced an investment of over $640,000 to the Canadian Organic Growers (COG) to help get more Canadian consumers buying Canadianmade organics produced locally

by Canadian organic farmers.

The announcement was made at Chelsea Market, during Canada’s National Organic Week, an annual event to showcase and celebrate organic food farming and products across the country.

The demand for organic foods

in Canada continues to rise, and there are many hard-working and entrepreneurial organic food producers across the country.

However, much of the Canadian demand for organics is met by imported products.

With this investment, COG will develop a strategy to identify and find solutions to organic supply chain barriers so that Canadian organic producers can realize their full economic potential and more Canadian consumers can buy locally produced Canadian organic food.

Since the COVID-19 pandemic started, 13% more Canadians are buying local food more often and almost three-quarters are deliberately buying Canadian.

Annual retail sales of certified

organic products in Canada are approximately $6.38 billion. They have increased by almost $3 billion since 2012.

Approximately 5,800 certified organic and transitional producers are working on 3.3 million acres of land in Canada.

Imports of organic goods were valued at $789 million in 2019. Top imported organic products include coffee, bananas, and strawberries.

Other imported organic products include blueberries, spinach and tomatoes.

Canadian Organic Growers (COG) is Canada’s national organic farmer and consumer association. COG offers training and resources to raise awareness about organics and assist farmers and gardeners in adopting sustainable and commercially viable, organic production methods. They are engaged in policy work and industry development at the local, regional and national level.

This investment is made through the Canadian Agricultural Strategic Priorities Program (CASPP), which is a $50.3 million, five-year investment to help the agricultural sector adapt and remain competitive.

Record 2019 sales for BC food and beverage processors Record 2019 sales, along with the resilience and innovation of B.C. food and beverage processors, are providing a blueprint for the

sector’s economic recovery from COVID-19.

In every region, farmers and producers continue to play a crucial role in contributing to both the local economy and the overall provincial economy.

Joint statement from Western Hemisphere Ag leaders Following the virtual G20 Agriculture and Water Ministers Meeting hosted by the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia on Sept. 12, top agricultural officials from five Western Hemisphere countries – Argentina, Brazil, Canada, Mexico and the United States – issued the following statement underscoring the importance of maintaining agricultural trade flows during the COVID-19 pandemic and emphasizing their commitment to remaining reliable suppliers of food and agricultural products to the world: “We, the Agriculture Ministers of Argentina, Brazil, Canada, Mexico and the United States, express our deepest condolences for the tragic loss of life being endured around the world as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic and convey our strong appreciation for all workers in the health, agricultural and other front-line sectors, who selflessly dedicate their efforts to the benefit of others.

“As we face the effects of this crisis, reliable and resilient agricultural supply chains remain essential to guarantee the availability of safe, nutritious food around the world. Good response to new online agriculture marketplace It has been a little over a month since the Alberta Forage Industry (AFIN) launched the website Farming the Web. AFIN’s Kristen Hall

says that they have received a huge response since the agriculture-specific buy-sell site has gone live.

‘We now have over 200 people who have created profiles and almost 100 different listings,’ she explains. ‘As well, some successful transactions have already gone through, which means that the site is working.

When we started this process, we wanted to make sure that it was a very user friendly site.

We have received very few calls needing help using the site, so we are going to take that as a win.’

AFIN received funding from the Governments of Canada and Alberta through the Canadian Agricultural Partnership to create and maintain the online ag marketplace.

It replaces the general store on Alberta Agriculture and Forestry’s old website, Ropin’ the Web.

She says that so far, the reviews of Farming the Web are mostly positive. She has found that people across the province are using the site to buy and sell products and offer services, and she expects that will continue to expand as time goes on.

Handling and moving cattle There is less risk of injury to both animals and handlers when cattle are handled quietly and calmly. Experienced handlers who are aware of cattle behaviour, including herd instinct, flight zone and point of balance, reaction to wind, noise, sudden movements, light contrast or shadows etc. will be able to move cattle more smoothly. This will minimize stress and promote cattle welfare.

Electric prods must only be used to assist movement of cattle when animal or human safety is at risk or as a last resort when all other humane alternatives have failed and only when cattle have a clear path to move.

Do not use electric prods on calves less than three months of age that can be moved manually.

Willful mistreatment or intentional harm of cattle is unacceptable. This includes but is not limited to: beating an animal; slamming gates on animals; allowing herd dogs to continue pushing cattle with nowhere to move; dragging or pushing cattle with machinery (unless to protect animal or human safety).

We had ten Pembina employees take part in the planting, and we were joined by Brandt Tractor’s sales Manager Dave M who ran

the skid steer and augers, Brandt employee Mark C, Kevin O from Wetaskiwin and Jason L and his dog Denver from McLennan and young Zach S - a 16 and a half year old volunteer and Susanna who brought us some raspberry canes and spent a lot of time on the watering hose.

The transformation of this sacred space in 8 hours was nothing short of amazing.

The edible trees and shrubs that were planted will be looked after

by Greenblade Landscaping. They have agreed to mentor us and make sure that our trees get the best chance of survival possible!

It takes a community to see projects like Veterans Memorial Gardens & Interpretive Centre through to fruition, and we are grateful for a community that steps up when we need them!

Preconditioning pays Experts agree that a 45-day preconditioning period puts cattle on the path to feedyard success. Research from New Mexico State University found that calves weaned 41 to 60 days gained faster, had fewer days on feed, less sickness and the highest subsequent carcass values, compared to groups weaned fewer or more days.

It’s not just about the number of days, though. Starch-based diets, like corn, seem to be key in marbling development, so setting calves up well during this critical phase will ensure gains and grade on down the line.

During the suggested 45-day minimum preconditioning period, target gains of 2 to 2.5 lb. per day while preparing calves for the feedyard environment.

The main goals in this period are: Acclimate calves to eating from a bunk and drinking from a waterer Provide time for complete vaccination and booster program Allow calves to re-gain lost weight due to weaning stress

NUTRITION Post-weaning nutrition can be as diverse as the ranches the cattle are raised on, but a few key principles will apply regardless of the operation. The two important variable are what calves eat and how it’s delivered. Calves should have easy access to trace minerals and vitamins to prime their immune system prior to weaning.

Silage mixtures or good-quality, free-choice hay are two options for getting them accustomed to a new feed source, but ranch resources might dictate what’s fed.

Here are some tips to follow: It has to be highly palatable to drive intakes.

It needs to be nutrient dense, since calves won’t be eating much for the first few weeks.

It needs to be well-balanced between highly fermentable energy and roughage to avoid digestive problems.

Utilize a corn-based, high-starch ration with an ionophore. Starch-

based weaning diets will enhance marbling deposition in the calf, continuing the lifetime approach to quality grade improvement.

Ionophores maintain gut health while improving protein supply to the animal. Because the distilling process removes starch, distillers grains or corn gluten feed are not recommended as the primary component of a creep diet for calves destined for a quality market. These ingredients make excellent protein sources but should not make up more than 20% of the diet to continue marbling

enhancement. While ingredients are important, the amount of nutrients is as important as the source.

If calves are moved from a highenergy diet to a lower gain (<2 lb./ day) growing diet, they will not continue to develop marbling at a high rate. A good rule of thumb is for a calf to continue to gain at a constant or increasing rate each day. Long periods of compensatory gain can be detrimental to a lifetime of marbling development.

Genomics and beef production – what is available and what should I do?

Before moving on, the term “density” needs further understanding in the context of genomics. A single strand of DNA can be compared to a set of instructions written in an alphabet that only has four letters (C, G, T and A). The genome of cattle is 3 billion pairs of letters long organized into around 22,000 genes. When DNA is copied, small copying mistakes occur sometimes. A “T” may be accidentally replaced with an A, G, or C. These are called single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs), and regularly referred to as “markers” or “SNP markers.”

So far, beef geneticists have discovered around 30 million different SNPs.

Every living thing has a genetic code, known as a genome, made of DNA. The genome is the complete set of genes in a living organism. Genomics is the branch of molecular biology that is concerned with the structure, function, mapping and evolution of genomes. A genome dictates how living things, including beef cattle, look, perform and adapt. A genotype is defined as the genetic constitution of an individual organism but simply put, in a breeding context, a genotype is a snapshot of an animal’s genome. The size, or density, of the snapshot varies.

The bigger, denser or higher resolution the snapshot, the more expensive it may be to develop a genotype for a specific animal.

As genotypes become a common piece of data in animal breeding and management, the number of different products and options to use these genotypes in selection and mating programs grows.

‘COVID-19 is driving change in consumer behaviour,’ explains Jeewani Fernando, provincial consumer market analyst with Alberta Agriculture and Forestry.

‘There are reasons to believe that certain fundamental shifts in consumer behaviour will have long lasting effects and may have implications for the agri-food sector.’

She says that although the impact of the pandemic varies across regions and countries, emerging behaviours are clearly visible. Those include: shifting to value-based products and essentials shopping online and using omnichannels - creating a single customer experience across the brand focusing more on health, quality, safety and the ‘caring’ economy decreasing brand loyalty homebody economy ‘Understanding these emerging behaviours may help the agrifood industry solve issues it’s facing today, assist with planning for tomorrow and preparing for the future,’ she adds.

Fernando notes that streamlining product portfolios, realigning base prices and promotion may be necessary to stay competitive.

‘Since consumers’ shopping frequency has declined, offering larger package sizes for lower prices would be one strategy.’

With the dramatic rise in e-commerce, she says that small businesses will need to increasingly turn to e-commerce platforms, while efficiently running their brick and mortar stores and using omnichannel platforms in innovative ways.

‘During the pandemic, many consumers have been forced to look outside their preferred brands based on what is available at the grocery store or due to price concerns,’ she explains. ‘Focusing on how to foster a brand community digitally will be crucial and having a loyal online community will be a key ingredient to fuel continued brand success.’

She adds that with cooking and meal planning fatigue felt by some consumers, there is also an opportunity to provide quick and convenient meal solutions and recipes.

Farmers in Alberta along with growers in other prairie provinces have more grain storage than most of their worldwide competitors,’ says Ryan Furtas, market analyst with Alberta Agriculture and Forestry.

‘However, having storage capacity can be a marketing advantage, but capturing a higher price by storing grain is not a guarantee.’

He notes that generally in years with normal production, prices are seasonally lowest at harvest time due to a large influx of supply from newly harvested crop that puts pressure on the grain handling system.

‘Customers who utilize grain, oilseed and pulse crops tend to require a consistent

supply over the entire year. Storing grain short-term – 3 to 4 months – or longer term – 10 to 11 months – following harvest can improve producer returns and allow farmers to provide product at times when deliveries are otherwise slow.’

Canola and wheat are 2 Alberta crops that comprise the majority of acreage, and both commodities have futures markets for price discovery. Some smaller, yet economically important crops that have no futures markets include durum, barley, flax and field peas.

These secondary crops can be subject to more extreme price swings and can sometimes remain in storage for more than a year as producers try to wait out market downturns.

The actual cost of storage is more than just the purchase price for the grain bin.

Set up costs can be significant if it includes a concrete floor, temperature monitoring systems and aeration. Annual depreciation needs to be considered along with repairs and maintenance, and that can amount to an annual cost of upwards of 25 cents a bushel.

Furtas adds that grain bin prices have been steadily climbing over the last 5 years.
