This community facility was originally built in 1949 and it needed this upgrade to tie into the alarm system with the recent addition of the Community Centre. This alarm will allow for increased capacity for funerals, weddings, family reunions, fundraisers and community activities. Bezanson Ag Society wishes to thank the Government of Alberta for this opportunity and funding,” added Audrey Hewings, Executive Director for the Bezanson Agricultural Society.

The CFEP grant aims to foster healthy, and vibrant communities across Alberta.

Peace Region Pest Update – Wheat Midge Hello everyone! We are approaching a time in the growing season where you may start to see issues regarding Wheat Midge in your wheat crops. Wheat Midge (Sitodiplosis mosellana), is an orange Midge that is about half the size of a mosquito. They have four stages in their lifecycle: eggs, larvae, pupa, and adult. The adult midge emerges from the Pupa stage in the soil over a period of 5-6 weeks from mid-June to mid-July and live for

It is important to discuss water safety with your children, children’s friends and neighbours so that everyone is clear on the safety rules,” says Raelyn Peterson, farm safety coordinator with Alberta Agriculture and Forestry. “Likewise, be familiar with neighbouring farm’s rules before letting your children swim.”

She suggests setting rules for swimming and follow through with enforcing them. She says that those rules should include: getting permission from an adult along with constant supervision swimming with a buddy wearing a properly fitted life jacket and learning how to fit a life jacket swimming in the daylight and when the weather is sunny, calm and warm swimming in a designated swimming area picked by the parents Another way to keep children safe is to ensure water sources are fenced off and have clear and visible signs.

“Show and explain to youth what the signs mean,” she adds. “Have the children repeat back in their own words what the sign means and what they should do if they see a sign like this.”

Peterson says to explain the dangers of water sources, including: Swift undercurrents of canals can knock you off your feet and carry you away. Canals can have very steep and slippery sides which makes climbing out difficult.

Dugouts have soft earth around the edges leading to steep sides which make it easy to slip and fall in. The steep edges are slippery and also difficult to get out.

Peterson cannot stress enough that supervision must be constant to be effective.

She suggests some activities that the family can do together to promote water safety, including how to demonstrate that falling into water fully clothed results in heavy clothing.

Make a heaving jug to install near every water source on the farm. Use an empty 4 litre water or milk jug with lid, 4 to 6 metres (15 to 20 ft) of rope and 3 cups of water. Put the 3 cups of water in the plastic jug and tighten the lid.

It gives the jug some weight to throw further.

Securely tie the rope to the handle of the jug.

For identification and scouting purposes, it is best to look for Wheat Midge between the heading and flowering crop stages and after 8:30pm when they are most active. This is when the females come out of the crop canopy to lay their eggs on the newly emerged wheat heads. All conventional wheat varieties are susceptible to wheat damage; however, some are more likely than others. Crop damage occurs during the larval stage, as they feed on the developing wheat kernel after hatching. Symptoms of damage can often be mistaken for frost or drought to someone who has never been exposed to Midge damage before. There are minimal visible changes to the external wheat head, but the kernel will be shrivelled, cracked, and deformed if there has been wheat midge damage.

There are a few natural progressions that can help reduce the chances of a Wheat Midge

infestation! Biological control of Wheat Midge includes Parasitoid Wasps that lay their eggs inside of the Wheat Midge larvae, ultimately consuming them as they grow. Seeding dates may also be a prevention method, it has been discovered that early seeding dates can result in less Midge damage as the crop matures before the Midge emerges through the soil.

If prevention methods fail however, and the threshold of 1 adult midge per each four or five heads. If threshold is met chemical control may be warranted. Insecticide should be applied in the evening when the female Midge is most active at the top of the canopy.

Breakfast Brief RECORD SOYBEAN HARVEST IN BRAZIL TO COMPETE WITH (Again) “When you are content to be simply yourself and don’t compare or compete, everybody will respect you.” – Lao Tzu (ancient Chinese philosopher) (FarmLead.com, July 31, 2020) Grain markets are in the green as corn and soybean harvest 2020 potential gets pit against domestic and export demand potential. Yesterday, China booked their largest one-day purchase of U.S. corn, buying 1.937 MMT, or 175M bushels more than the previous record that they set in another purchase just two weeks ago. They also bought 1.925 MMT of soybean exports, the largest one-week purchase since November 2016! The extra purchasing is certainly appreciated, but will it continue?

On the macroeconomic side of things, we got some intense economic activity reports for 2Q2020, with the U.S., Mexico, and the Eurozone all have historical contractions in their GDP. In the U.S., the GDP fell 33% (which was actually better than the 35% expected), but some healthy math I saw yesterday posited that, arguably, about 2/3s of last quarters economic activity could be traced back to the $3 Trillion in US government stimulus money. In Mexico, GDP dropped 17.3% – a new record – and the fifth consecutive quarter of economic contraction.

And finally, in the EU, GDP fell 40% but investors seem to be unfazed as the bloc is handling the COVID-19 containment better than the U.S. On the flipside, factory activity in China grew for the 5th straight month and beat analyst expectations, but concerns of a few challenging, upcoming months is growing as flooding in the central part of China expands.

(I talked about the Three Gorges Dam in Wednesday’s Breakfast Brief, in addition to the declining U.S. Dollar and durum prices.)

Another Big Soybean Harvest in Brazil?

As we flip the calendar into August tomorrow, that officially means that we’re a month and a half away from the Plant2020 campaign for Brazilian farmers. A poll of analysts by Reuters suggests that the 2020 soybean harvest in Brazil should climb to 130 MMT, up about 10 MMT or 8% year-over-year. That’s slightly below the current official expectation from the USDA, who, in their July WASDE, suggested the 2020 Brazilian soybean harvest would be 1 MMT higher at 131 MMT. Datagro is one of the highest estimates at 131.7 MMT, while Rabobank has one of the lowest at 127.3 MMT. Regardless, we’re talking another record soybean harvest in Brazil in 2020.

In a Breakfast Brief from a month ago, I talked about how we would only have China to thank for improving soybean prices. However, if you read Monday’s Breakfast Brief, (in addition to explosive lentil exports) you’d also know that China’s demand for the U.S. soybean harvest soured in July with only about 270,000 imported in June. With Brazil’s soybean harvest acreage expanding for good reasons and by as much as 4% to the highest area in 6 years, China is likely looking at South America, not North America, for more of its sourcing options.

Let’s be real: China needs to see “explosive” buying to meet the Phase One trade deal terms and they don’t seem super eager to do it. On the flipside, Brazilian farmers could make record profits – $3.45 USD/bushel as estimated by the IMEA – on their 2020/21 soybean harvest, as well as other crops because of the currency effects.

Granted, Chinese importers have bought more than $2.5B worth of U.S. soybean in the last 2 months, it’s tough to say that trend will continue, especially since they know what volumes will be coming from the Brazilian soybean harvest, come January 2021. That said, China continues to battle the containment of the African Swine Fever, as well as the fact that the flooding situation from the Three Gorges Dam slowed soybean crush volumes to the smallest in a month.

Overall, tensions continue to rise between Beijing and Washington, and Brazil seems to be caught in the middle as it relates to trade activity. More specifically, the U.S. wants Brazil to ban Hauwei from 5G access in the country, warning the South American country of “consequences” if they don’t. Thus, it seems that the U.S. is working on building up its IP and IT allies against China, but that doesn’t necessarily mean raw commodity trade will change!

Florida Georgia Line, Nickelback producer Joey Moi with a Peace region balance in his mix He’s produced Florida Georgia Line, Nickelback, and had a hand in writing the tunes My Darkest Days’ ‘Porn Star Dancing’, and FGL’s ‘Cruise’, and more. He’s got Keith Urban in his contact list – and it started right here in Dawson Creek at the Silverado.

Joey Moi’s credit list over the last 20 years matches anyone in the music industry – countless platinum records and singles in rock and country.

He’s now a Partner/Producer at Nashville’s Big Loud Records – celebrating its five-year anniversary on Saturday. And also up for Producer of the Year at the 2020 ACM Awards, slated for September 16.

Moi was born in Whitehorse, Yukon, moved around BC and then to Tumbler Ridge when he was ten. After graduating from Tumbler Ridge Secondary School, he moved to Vancouver to attend the Audio Engineering program at the Centre for Digital Imaging and Sound. He’s got some work experience throughout the Peace.

A couple weeks later he’s in the studio with Keith Urban. Moi produced Urban’s track ‘Polaroid’ earlier this year and has another Urban work in the mix.

“Another great guy, and an elite talent,’ says Moi. He’s not the only one, Joey.

After some work experiences including stint at 560 CKNL in Fort St. John, he started to get a handle of things.

“From there, I spend some time with Systems by Trail, working with them as well and all of this just kinda added up.”

Fair to say they are tight. Moi stepped up to produce Nickelback’s multi-platinum The Long Road in 2003. And the next few albums.

The tune ‘Photograph’ asks “What the hell is on Joey’s head?” – Moi knows, he is the Joey in question.

Moi’s move from rock to country took a similar friendly kismet route – through Dallas Smith and Default.

“We were working some of the early Default stuff and we joked anytime Dallas wanted to record and work up a country album, he should.

He can sing anything. One of those Default tunes had a country ish harmony to it. Cut to years later, Dallas is making that first country record.”

This led Moi moving to Nashville for songwriting and publishing gigs, and Florida Georgia Line.

“We got into publishing, and artist development.”

All of a sudden the tune Cruise took off for FGL and Moi - and another new door was opening.

“It all feels like it happened so fast.”

Farms report record sales in 2019, point way to COVID-19 recovery While the COVID-19 pandemic has created challenges for farmers this year, farm-sales numbers from 2019 show that there is a solid foundation in place to build a path to economic recovery.

Farm cash receipts refer to the revenues from the sale of agricultural commodities, program payments from government agencies and payments from private crop and livestock insurance programs.

The record $3.9 billion in sales represent an increase of more than 13%, or $462 million more, than 2018.

Other sectors/commodities with increased sales include: eggs - $14 million; nursery - $14 million; chicken - $12 million; blueberries - $7 million; grapes - $5.6 million; and grains and oilseeds - $2.7 million.

Peace Region Pest Update – spotted wing drosophila and red clover case bearer moth The Spotted Wing Drosophila is an invasive insect that is thought to have originated from Asia. It was first recorded in Japan in 1916 and has been found in British Columbia since 2009. Working with local horticulturalists this year the project has started trap monitoring for this pest fly. Spotted Wing Drosophila has not been found in this region, and this is the first year that it has been trapped for up here. It has been found in the Fraser Valley, Okanagan, Coastal BC, Alberta, Manitoba, Ontario, and Québec among other areas further south. This insect is not a crop pest but is known to attack many soft fruits grown up here in the region, this includes raspberries, strawberries, cherries, haskaps, blueberries and saskatoons. Drosophila adults are quite small measuring 3-4mm in length, are yellow brown in coloration with red eyes. Males have large dark spots on their wings, from which their common name derives from. Drosophilae overwinter as adults and lay their eggs in the summer in ripening fruit with multiple generations able to occur in a season. The marks on the fruit look like pin holes and can become entrances for disease. The larvae can cause the fruit to become prematurely soft and unmarketable.

The Case Bearer originates from Europe and was initially introduced in Québec into 1970, and then found its way into Ontario around 1985.

The first damage to crop yield found in the Peace region was in 2005. As an adult the moths are shiny metallic brown, or copper in color and are quite small measuring 6-9mm in length. The mature larvae encase themselves withered petals and then proceed to feed on the developing seed within the clover head.

One of the problems with trying to spray for this insect is that the larvae are protected by the petal encasement. Monitoring for the Red Clover Casebearer in the BC Peace has been ongoing with the BC Pest monitoring project since 2012 using a pheromone-based trap to capture adult males.

Avoiding baler fires

“An ounce of prevention can go a long way to preventing baler fires,” says Raelyn Peterson, farm safety coordinator with Alberta Agriculture and Forestry.

“Baler fires can happen quickly and cause a lot of damage.

She notes that SDSU Extension has a good maintenance checklist for preventing unwanted baler fires and has some tips to reduce this hazard: routinely remove plant material – leaves, stems, dust – that has built up on the baler carry a fully charged

and not expired “ABC” fire extinguisher on the baler or in the tractor all the time carry a shovel to use to throw dirt on a fire or extinguish hot spots clean hydraulic fluid build-up and grease from the baler, as it attracts and holds highly ignitable dust carry a cell phone or use another communication method in case of an emergency be able to give clear directions to your location for emergency crews carry 10 to 15 litres of water to use in case a fire should start repair hydraulic or

fuel leaks immediately and adequately clean up spills “Finally,” she adds, “have regular communication with someone who knows your location in the event of an emergency. Stay connected with your neighbours and check in with each other.

The curse of lush pasture grass in horses Dr. Christa Harder This spring and summer have seen extraordinary amounts of rain in the Peace Country and as such the summer pastures have been particularly lush and continue to be, even late into the summer.

Every year we see horses develop laminitis or grass founder on summer pasture but this year we have seen higher numbers of cases than other years.

Prevention is key to success when it comes to managing this unfortunate condition therefore, I thought I would shed some light on what laminitis is all about before it happens to your horse.

Laminitis or founder (as it is commonly called) results in the destruction of the sensitive, blood-rich laminae that connect the horse’s hoof capsule to the coffin bone.

When this occurs horses will become very painful on their feet (most commonly both front feet). They appear to “rock back” on their hind feet (taking the weight off their front feet) and walk very gingerly – as if they are “walking on eggshells”.

Horses will spend a lot of

time laying down and be very reluctant to move (especially on hard ground). As the laminae separate the coffin bone rotates within the hoof capsule and in extreme cases can sink through the bottom of the sole at which point euthanasia is the only humane option.

Laminitis flares up after an insult to the body which can be caused by grain overload, a retained placenta, excessive concussion to the hoof, hormonal imbalance (Cushings disease), certain drugs (corticosteroids), obesity and lush grass.

Laminitis caused by lush grass is the most common cause in the Peace Country, especially this time of year.

A lot of horses that develop grass founder have a metabolic predisposition called

equine metabolic disease or insulin resistance. Insulin is naturally produced to decrease the sugar levels in the blood but when this fails to happen the blood vessels to the hoof are affected and lamellar destruction occurs.

Higher levels of sugar in feeds can put these horses at higher risk.

Lush new grass, rich hay (alfalfa) and high carbohydrate feeds (grains, molasses, corn) are very high in sugars and more difficult for these horses to handle metabolically.

Genetically, certain

breeds of horses such as ponies, Morgans and draft horses are more likely to develop equine metabolic syndrome.

Also any horse with a cresty neck, fat deposits behind the withers and over the tail head are also at much higher risk of developing laminitis.

If you suspect your horse has this body type be very careful about turning them out on full grass in the summertime (or keep it on trimmed down pasture).

There are varying degrees of how bad the laminitis episode

will be, so it is best to bring it to your veterinarian for an exam. We will often take x-rays of your horse’s feet to evaluate the degree of rotation or sinking of the coffin bone which gives us an indication of longterm prognosis. Since these horses are tender on their feet we try and put them in a place where their feed and water is easily accessible and the ground is soft (peat moss or deep bedding works well). We will also prescribe pain medication and work with you to develop a feeding strategy for your horse long term (most of these horses will need

to stay on hay year round). Specialized shoeing, trimming or boots to support their feet may also be indicated.

Once a horse has had an episode of laminitis there may be long term damage to the foot and they are always more likely to have recurrent problems in the future. The condition can be managed with diligent care in certain cases but prevention is the best way to avoid having to deal with it in the first place. Since the pilot launch, the program has helped more than 70 farmers, with 1,883.8 hectares (4,655.0 acres) brought into or maintained in agricultural production and a total of 81 land matches. Businesses can be matched to more than one property and have been made on acreages of all sizes – from

less than an acre to large plots of farmland.

“I’m so excited that we’re helping B.C. farmers find affordable and accessible farmland to put into production so we can have more fresh, local food in our communities,” said Lana Popham, Minister of Agriculture.

“Whether they are new farmers, or established farmers who need more land, each farmer has their own unique criteria when looking for farmland. The services delivered by Young Agrarians are so valuable in bringing people together and making these matches that meet everyone’s needs.”

business in Squamish. After years of farming on multiple sites, they knew they needed one larger property in order to grow a business where they could put down roots. They found their new home base on a 9.7-hectare (24acre) parcel of land in Squamish owned by Wolfgang and Renate Alkier, and were able to sign a 26year lease.

Canola seeding considerations SARDA Ag Research, Battle River Research Group (BRRG) and Lakeland Agricultural Research Association (LARA) have started the trial Canola Seed Size this year to explore seeding depth and seed size over 3 years in 3 locations.

“With this trial, we wanted to aim for 3 locations in Alberta so that producers are able to access the information that is most relevant to their location because there a big change in climate conditions from the Peace Region to central Alberta,” explains Megan Snell, research coordinator with SARDA Ag Research.

Seeding depth is one of the easiest objects to change during the spring and although, most research shows that canola does better if seeded shallow, it is easy to set the seed drill to follow the soil moisture level.

“So, understanding how deep is too deep, and does the size of the seed affect how deep you can seed without jeopardizing the establishment of the crop,” she adds.

“We want to provide producers with the ability to improve their on-farm production.

Understanding the interaction between seed size and planting depth on canola establishment with regard to yields, farmers are able to choose their preferred planting depth based on their seed size.”

Seeding this year took place in mid-May, and all of the treatments at all 3 locations – MD of Smoky River, Lac La Biche County, near Forestburg – are being grown using optimum agronomic practices. The data collected on this trial include weather stats (precipitation and temperatures), soil moisture at seeding, emergence (plant counts at 7, 14 and 21 days after seeding and at complete emergence), days to flower (50% flower), days to maturity (60% seed colour change) plant height, yield (adjusted to 8.5% moisture), 1000 seed weight, percent green seed, oil content and protein content (composite samples). All of the data will be analyzed using standard analysis of variance.

Helping BC farmers maintain farm status The Government of British Columbia is waiving minimum income requirements for existing B.C. farm operations, allowing them to maintain their current property tax farm status for 2021.

“Our government is committed to helping farmers farm, and we are working to create a strong and resilient food system,” said Lana Popham, Minister of Agriculture.

“It’s been a difficult year for many people, and this change is just one more example of how we are recognizing the challenges and

supporting farmers.”

The COVID-19 pandemic has been challenging for some B.C. farm operations, including smaller-scale farms that depend on roadside stands, farm markets and public interaction for sales revenue. Without this action, a number of properties would have been in jeopardy of losing farm status for the 2021 tax year, significantly increasing the property tax burden on those farmers and farm families.

“We know that robust and healthy farm operations will play an important role as we restart our economy,” said Selina Robinson, Minister of Municipal Affairs and Housing. “Our government is committed to helping farmers maintain their farm classification for 2021 to ensure they can produce the food people in B.C. rely on.”

In order to be classified as a farm in British Columbia, properties must meet certain criteria, including generating a minimum amount of gross income from a qualifying agriculture use based on the size of the parcel of land. This minimum income requirement must be met every two years and there must be some income generated every year.

BC Assessment sends out selfreporting income questionnaires and conducts intermittent inspections to determine whether a property should maintain its farm status for the upcoming tax year.

Ardill Ranch celebrates 100 years of dedication to Peace agriculture

The Ardill family is celebrating 100 years of ranching in British Columbia in 2020 and will receive a Century Farm Award for its contribution and dedication to B.C. agriculture.

“British Columbia’s agricultural industry has a rich history, and the Ardill family has been an integral part of farming in the Peace region for multiple generations,” said Lana Popham, Minister of Agriculture. “I’ve had the incredible pleasure of visiting the ranch, touring the land with Renee and Karen, and sharing a coffee with the family in their home. My heart was full after a day at the Ardill Ranch and I look forward to a day when I can visit again. I wish everyone at Ardill Ranch, and the members of the Ardill family the best and congratulations on 100 years of farming in B.C.” Jack Ardill was born in Ireland

and immigrated to Canada in 1909 at the age of 19. While serving in the First World War, Jack met his future wife, Betty, while in Holland as a prisoner of war.

The newlyweds, Jack and Betty, returned to Canada in 1919 and settled in Hudson’s Hope. They moved to Edmonton where their first son, John, was born in February 1920. In the spring of that year, Jack scouted for land in Peace River country and found what he had dreamed of.

On May 6, 1920, Jack and Betty filed a Homestead and Soldiers Grant for the ranch location in the Peace River District and brought with them the essentials for homesteading: a team of horses, a cow and calf, some chickens, a plow, a mowing machine and rake, some furniture, a tent and a year’s grubstake (materials and provisions).

The ranch boundaries grew

as the years went by and more parcels of land were accumulated.

The cattle population also grew as more land was put under cultivation. During those busy days, Jack and Betty’s family also grew, welcoming their daughter Betty, and sons Richard (Dick) and Tom. After 100 years, the ranch is still family-run and is almost entirely self-sufficient for gardening and food – both for home and for livestock. Dick, along with his wife Irene, took over for Jack as ranch manager in the early 1960s, but retired approximately 10 years ago. John also lived and worked at the ranch with his wife Beth until his death in 1996. Renee, Dick’s oldest daughter, has taken over the ranch manager role and lives and works at the ranch, along with other family members Karen McKean (granddaughter-in-law), Don Ardill (grandson) and Sorrel Schroeder (great grandson).

When Dick was asked how he felt about celebrating 100 years of ranching, he laughed and said, “Well, it doesn’t make me feel any younger. It is quite an accomplishment to be celebrating 100 years and to have kept it in the family. I’m thankful the family wants to ranch, and although it may not be an easy life, it’s a good life.”

Today, the area is home to about 400 head of commercial Hereford cattle, who spend their summers

on the range and winters in the valley. Approximately 60% of the total feed supply is put up in the form of grain and hay silage, while the rest is put up as round bales.

Horses remain an important part of life on the ranch. Some of the first quarter horses in the area were brought to the ranch from the Edmonton area. Horses are still the main access to summer range, used for salt packing, range patrol, cattle work, rodeoing and pleasure riding.

“I’m proud to be a fourthgeneration rancher,” Schroeder said.

The ranch is a successful cowcalf operation, where hard work and fun go hand in hand. Ardill’s Ranch is proud to be part of the community and takes part in community events, such as high-school work-experience programs, forage tours, annual Hudson’s Hope preschool tours, rodeo and rodeo sponsorships, hockey sponsorships and Hudson’s Hope Fall Fair.

Century Farm Awards honour agricultural organizations that have been active for a century or longer, as well as pioneers whose farms and ranches have been in families for 100 years or more. Each Century Farm Award celebrates the rich heritage of farming and ranching families and organizations in B.C.

Canada’s first-ever Agricultural Youth Council the Honourable Marie-Claude Bibeau, Minister of Agriculture and Agri-Food, announced the names of the youth who will form the new Canadian Agricultural Youth Council. The 25 young people were chosen from more than 800 applications received, representing a diverse mix of subsectors from across the agriculture and agri-food sector, as well as from every province and the North.

Young Canadians are dynamic, engaged and passionate about the future of the agriculture and agri-food sector, and giving them a voice at the table is an important commitment of the Government of Canada.

As a consultative body to Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada, the Canadian Agricultural Youth Council will have the opportunity to offer suggestions on Government priorities, as well as identify problems and propose solutions on issues that matter most to them, all while developing leadership skills and building professional relationships.

Council members will provide their insights on a variety of topics, which could include: how the sector is adapting to COVID-19, business risk management programs, sustainable agriculture, market diversification, skills and labour, intergenerational farm transfers, and mental health. The Council will meet multiple times annually, with a virtual inaugural meeting planned for August 2020.

The Government of Canada is committed to engaging with youth and has announced a number of measures, including the Canada Summer Jobs program and the Youth Employment and Skills Program, to ensure young Canadians have the support and tools they need to thrive.

“I’m looking forward to virtually meeting the members of the first-ever Canadian Agricultural Youth Council. Each of these young leaders will bring a unique experience and perspective to the table. Together, the members will help shape the future of Canada’s sustainable agricultural industry,” said the Honourable Marie-Claude Bibeau, Minister of Agriculture and Agri-Food “I am proud to lend my support to this announcement of the members of the Canadian Agricultural Youth Council. These 25 young Canadians will be integral to keeping an open and ongoing dialogue on challenges and opportunities for Canada’s agricultural sector. Our Government is committed to including youth voices in decision making, and encouraging business development among the next generation of young entrepreneurs,” added the Honourable Bardish Chagger, Minister of Diversity and Inclusion and Youth

Canadian Agricultural Youth Council.

Youth who applied and were not selected may be contacted to participate in other fora with the Minister and the Department in the future.

The application process included a series of questions on each candidate’s experience in the agriculture and agri-food sector, a short essay on a significant issue facing youth in the sector and how they proposed to address it.

The inaugural virtual meeting of the Council will take place in August 2020.

On July 23, the Minister announced that approximately 800 new positions are expected to be created through the Youth Employment and Skills Program, created to help the agriculture industry attract Canadian youth, ages 15 to 30, to their organizations to assist with labour shortages brought on by the pandemic.

COVID-19 and emerging food retail trends The retail landscape is shifting as the pandemic has decreased demand at restaurants and increasing demand at grocery stores.

“Consumer demands have changed and COVID-19 has driven a digital transformation within grocery stores and the food service industry,” explains Stephanie Budynski, coordinating researcher with Alberta Agriculture and Forestry. “Both have had to provide alternative delivery methods and an increase in digital touchpoints.”

Canola market prospects with analyst “At about the halfway point of the growing season in late July, canola prices have been rising,” says Blue. “Drivers for the canola price improvement have been higher vegetable oil prices, higher European rapeseed prices and the Canadian dollar staying below 74 cents U.S.” Canola demand has been much greater this crop year than was expected last fall.

“Canadian Grain Commission (CGC) statistics as of July 12 have producer canola deliveries this crop year at 19.2 million tonnes, 2 million tonnes above a year ago,” he explains. “Canadian canola exports of 9.5 million tonnes are 700,000 tonnes or 8% more than a year ago.”

He adds that domestic use, mainly for crushing, of 9.8 million tonnes is almost 1 million tonnes above a year ago.

“Canola carryover will be lower than expected earlier in the crop year, placing more reliance on 2020 canola production to meet demand in crop year 2020-21.”

Canola prices tend to be most affected by the oil component, and Blue says that vegetable

Restraints to continued higher canola prices are a potentially large U.S. soybean crop, which is currently 70%.

“August weather will largely determine the outcome of this year’s U.S. soybean crop. The condition of Canada’s canola crop is variable.

Many areas of Alberta are overly wet, but overall Prairie yield potential is still high.”

Seasonally, as shown in the chart below, Blue say that this is the time of year when weather induced price rallies wane.

“Also, the futures chart is near the highs from earlier in the year and some technical indicators are ‘overbought.’ Market analysts are encouraging producers to shop for best canola basis levels and do some forward contracting at current levels, at least for part of the canola that they plan to deliver at harvest-time.”

He notes that as usual in a market, there are supportive and non-supportive factors affecting the canola situation.

Soil health and crop diversity This 4 year project, which started north east of Oyen this year, is comparing several annual crop mixes - that all include pulse crops - and individual annual crop rotations in side-byside comparisons.

“Most producers recognize the benefits to soil fertility by incorporating pulses into crop rotations,” explains Dianne Westerlund, manager and forage agrologist at Chinook Applied Research Association (CARA).

She says that anecdotal reports have suggested using different crop mixes - with pulses - during the fallow year improves various soil characteristics and decreases the need for chemical use on subsequent crops.

“This project will document the impact of crop diversity on soil carbon, compaction, respiration, infiltration and biological populations from various cropping practices.”

The trial consists of 14 rotations grown each year of the project. Those rotations include peas, canola, lentils, wheat and 4 cocktail cover crop (CCC) mixes: CCC Mix 1 - peas, oats, triticale, tillage radish, phacelia CCC Mix 2 - lentils, oats, triticale, tillage radish, phacelia CCC Mix 3 - hairy vetch, oats, triticale, tillage radish, phacelia CCC Mix 4 - peas/lentils/fababeans, triticale, oats During this first year of the trial, the 14 rotations include the 4 crop mixes, peas, lentils and wheat. The forage yield and nutrient quality will be measured on the mixes before they are mowed or rolled down.

The grain yield will be measured on the crop treatments, and soil samples will be collected from each plot following harvest.

Next year, the 14 rotations include canola, wheat, peas and a chemical fallow.

The research will be complete following the 2023 growing season. Westerlund says that the final report should help local producers to make sound decisions with their soil and crop management strategies.

In Alberta, the Canadian Agricultural Partnership represents a federalprovincial investment of $406 million in strategic programs and initiatives for the agricultural sector.
