Breakfast Brief AS U.S. WHEAT YIELDS DISAPPOINT, WILL CANADA SURPRISE? (FarmLead.com, July 26, 2019) Grain markets are mixed as the complex continues to digest wheat yields, grain exports activity, and weather over the next few weeks. For Mother Nature, expectations are that August weather will be more hot, dry conditions, which should certainly get the attention of the bulls.

With the late crop, the heat stress during pollination could be very detrimental to yield potential.

Gro Intelligence has a multi-factor crop yield prediction equation, that’s mainly rooted in NDVI maps to measure vegetative state. That said, this year, the data firm is estimating that average U.S. corn yields will come in at 159.6 bushels per acre as of Wednesday, July 24th. Compare this to the USDA’s current estimate from the July WASDE report of 166 bushels per acre. Gro notes that, while there were 180 counties across the United States last year that saw corn yields average more than 200 bushels per acre, this year there will be fewer than 10. Specific to the Corn Belt, they mentioned that vegetative health is the lowest it’s ever been for this time of year in Illinois, Indiana, and Ohio.

For other crops, soybean prices are also following weather forecasts, but it’s expected that we’ll find a low before the next WASDE report on Monday, August 12th. With crop development a bit behind in Western Canada, canola prices will also follow the weather, but should track alongside soybean prices as the oilseed complex remains rangebound (much like other grain prices) until said WASDE report.

I mentioned in Monday’s FarmLead Breakfast Brief that canola prices are having a tough time getting off its downward trend, but recent heat in Europe putting stress on the rapeseed crop there has helped a bit. The Canadian dollar dropping below 76¢ USD this morning is also helping.

Variable Wheat Yields Seen on U.S. Crop Tour Last week, I talked about the volatility of wheat prices, but this might be a function of the volatility in the estimates of wheat yields. The U.S. Wheat Quality Council’s crop tour wrapped up yesterday across North Dakota and Minnesota, with the goal of understanding what durum and wheat yields are going to be. The crop tour took scouts through 356 spring wheat fields and consensus was the early-planted stuff looks okay, whereas the late-planted fields have the most potential, but they also face a higher risk of getting hit by frost. With the final counts put together, the Wheat Quality Council says that this year’s average hard red spring wheat yields should come in at 43.1 bushels per acre. That’s up from last year’s crop tour average of 41.1 bushels per acre, but below the five-year average of 44.7 bpa.

For comparison, North Dakota’s Agricultural Statistics office said in a July 11 report that spring wheat yields would average 47 bushels per acre this year, down 2 bushels from last year. With 6.4M acres of spring wheat seeded in North Dakota in 2019 (down 1% from last year), expectations are that farmers in the state will harvest 301M bushels (or 8.19 MMT if converting bushels into metric tonnes), down 5% year-over-year. In Minnesota, the local statistics office says that average wheat yields, as of their July 11 report, are looking closer to 62 bushels per acre, up 3 bushels from last year. With spring wheat acreage down 6% in the Gopher state year-over-year to 1.48M acres, 2019 wheat production should come in 1% lower from 2018 at 91.8M bushels (or 2.5 MMT).

The crop tour also took the scouts through 15 durum fields, which isn’t all that statistically significant, but one should remember that North Dakota farmers seeded a record-low 700,000 acres of durum this year. For average durum yields, the crop tour says that it’s looking like 32 bushels per acre, which is well below the five-year average of 40 bpa and last year’s results of 39.3 bpa.

Canadian Wheat Yields, Crop Look Decent In their updated forecast last week, Agriculture Canada dropped their estimates for Canadian wheat production by 1.85 MMT to 32 MMT. This matches what the International Grains Council just lowered its estimate of Canadian wheat production to, down from 33.6 MMT. However, the IGC and AAFC’s estimates are below what the USDA said in their July WASDE report of 33.3 MMT (albeit that was lowered from 34.5 MMT in the June WASDE).

While Ag Canada’s average non-durum wheat yields include data for both winter and spring wheat yields, they’re estimating things will come in slightly above average. Further, total non-durum wheat production in the Great White North of 27 MMT, down 1.7 MMT from the June estimate, but still nearly 1 MMT larger than last year and 2.6 MMT or nearly 11% larger than the five-year average. This is really a function of acreage climbing 1.4M acres, or 7.5% year-over-year.

For durum yields, AAFC is estimating things to come in at 38.36 bushels per acre, slightly below the fiveyear average of 39 bpa. However, because seeded acreage of durum in Canada is down 21% or nearly 1.3M acres from last year, total Canadian durum production is expected to come in at 5MMT, down 13% or 745,000 MT from 2018. This is mainly because last year’s durum yields were well-below average at just 34.8 bushels per acre.

In Saskatchewan, nearly half of the oilseeds and about a third of all spring-seeded cereals are behind their normal crop development timeliness. This week’s crop progress report from the provincial government notes that, “Some crops are one to two weeks behind in development, which may be of significance depending on the weather during harvest and when the first fall frost occurs.” Conversely, Manitoba’s spring cereals and oilseeds are looking good after rains last week and the recent hot and humid weather. In Alberta, we know from last week’s crop progress report that most crops are in pretty good condition, it remains dry in the southern and eastern areas of the province.

Overall, weather continues to be the name of the game in the short-term, but in the grander scheme of things, it seems more and more than production shortfalls in certain areas are being made up elsewhere. Further, it’s likely that some of those production shortfalls should create opportunity from an exportability standpoint, something I hope to dig more into next week!

Northern B.C. murders: RCMP descend on York Landing after cross Canada chase Mounties in Manitoba have pivoted to York Landing after two B.C. murder suspects were spotted scavenging at a landfill earlier today.

In an update on Sunday, Manitoba RCMP said they were responding to a tip that Kam McLeod and Bryer Schmegelsky were spotted in the community. Despite reports on social media, neither are in custody, RCMP said in a tweet.

“RCMP officers remain in the community of York Landing & continue to investigate the reported sighting of the two suspects,” it said.

“All required resources are being used in this ongoing investigation.”

York Landing is around 200 kilometres southwest of Gillam, Manitoba, where RCMP and the military had been focusing their search efforts over the last week. Police closed in on the community after security patrollers saw two men scavenging at the local dump.

Bear Patrol Inc. executive director James Favel said his company had been asked to send staff in to assist communities in the search area when patrollers saw two young men with no weapons or backpacks at the dump. All they had were the clothes

they were wearing from what the team could see.

When the pair saw the security team, “they bolted,” Favel said. The pair ran for trees and the patrol called police.

“All hell is breaking loose and the town is locked down,” Favel said.

He said the team weren’t worried as they initially thought the pair might be a work crew. It was the absence of a work truck that made them suspicious, he said.

“The adrenaline hit,” he said.

There is a heavy police presence in the region. York Landing resident John Kalenchuk said helicopters and police in fatigues had been patrolling the area since about 6 p.m local time, just over an hour after the security team spotted the suspicious pair.

“They’re flying around lots looking for those two characters,” he said. “There’s patrols on foot with dogs.”

Kalenhcuk said the pair would be trapped if they hadn’t managed to escape the dump area. Their choice to escape, he said, would be to take a winter road back out of the area or swim from island to island in the Hayes River which enters Hudson Bay not far to the northeast.

York Factory Cree Nation Chief Leroy Constant said RCMP are on scene with a helicopter, police dogs, and emergency response team members. However, heavy winds are limiting an aerial search.

He urged residents to stay inside with their doors locked as a 24-hour patrol of the community gets underway. “ERT are conducting ground searches with dogs and heavily armoured officers,” he said.

RCMP urged the public not to disclose the locations of its officers by posting photos to social media.

NPHL considers team proposal from La Crete The layout of the NPHL could look a different next year. A group from La Crete has submitted a proposal to the league and its teams to join the NPHL for the 2019-20 season. That would bring the league back up to eight teams, and could result in the divisions being evened out at four teams each.

NPHL President Jack McAvoy has asked teams to give him their thoughts by July 28, and the process of deciding whether to vote on accepting the La Crete team would go from there.

Equine lacerations - the good, bad, and the ugly

Written by Dr. Mike Ross, DVM Summer has arrived and with it some of the most enjoyable weather and outdoor activities.

Along with this comes another season for us in veterinary practice. This is also cut horse season. Horses become more active, not only being enjoyed and ridden by us but also behaviorally busy out on pasture “just being horses.”

Mares are in heat, dominance hierarchy’s are established and re-made, and activity levels increase. In the mist of this horses like to get in fights with fences, sticks, and basically any inanimate object in which they tend to lose the battle! There are some basics every horse owner should be aware of when dealing with equine punctures, cuts or lacerations.

Generally you can assume the seriousness of the laceration by the location on your horse’s body. For example, lacerations which heal well occur on places like the head and face or the upper body. The head and face has extremely good blood supply which promotes healing, and upper body lacerations occur where there is lot of flesh and low skin tension.

The most serious lacerations occur in areas around joints, tendons, major vessels and eyes. Emergencies are triaged (or prioritized) based on this and your veterinarian can help to come up with the most appropriate action. Essentially when a wound is observed the most immediate action is to control hemorrhage and keep clean. This is done primarily by cleaning and bandaging the lesion if possible, and getting them seem immediately by your veterinarian. Avoid excessive cleaning with house hold “cocktails” as most can do more harm than good. You usually have 6 hours to get a wound sutured before exponential bacterial growth prevents a successful laceration closure. Wounds that are in high mobility regions or with excessive swelling and skin tension also may be difficult to suture and keep closed. These wounds are not sutured and managed by other means to let them heal

and mend on their own.

The most serious lacerations we see involve a joint or tendon. These can be life threatening and should be seen by a veterinarian immediately.

Joint or tendon sheath infections are very serious situations. Usually these are on the lower limbs or on the back side of the limb where the vital structures are located. Luckily, as veterinarians, we have an amazing treatment for these infected areas called regional limb perfusion. This is where we place a tourniquet above the area on the limb, a vein is catheterized, and an antibiotic solution is infused and allowed to saturate the area for up to 20 minutes. Successful outcome is highly dependent on early intervention.

As a laceration heals, proud flesh is always a concern. Proud flesh is an extra production of a normal healing tissue called granulation tissue, or pink to red colored tissue that grows in a wound. It provides a bed for skin to close across and is normal and good in most instances. Excess production of granulation or proud flesh occurs in areas where there is high skin tension, poor blood supply, or high motion. It appears as a pink bulge that protrudes above the skin level. This always occurs on the lower limbs as proud flesh never occurs in the upper body. A general rule of thumb is that proud flesh only occurs from the knees and hocks down. Fortunately, there are several treatments we have to combat excess granulation. Also, immobilization of a lower leg wound is beneficial and accelerates healing.

We routinely place casts on the foot for wounds in the heel area.

Throughout history, there are thousands of topical products that have been used on lacerations.

Most have been proven from veterinary research to have little or no affect on outcome and the majority actually has negative effects on wound healing. There is a thought that states: if you wouldn’t put a substance in your eye, you should NOT be putting it on a wound. Hydro therapy or water flushing has been used successfully for years and is still used for cleaning and mechanical debridement of wounds. . An even better recommendation we make is using saline for wound flushing instead of water. Saline has the same salt concentration as blood and mechanically debrides the same as water, while not killing the healthy wound-healing cells. This can be made with table salt and boiled water placed in a clean weed sprayer and then pumped, and used for irrigation and cleaning of the wound. Please talk to us about the recipe for this easy, homemade saline! You can also increase the salt concentration to make the flush “hypertonic” for very swollen, infected, or edematous wounds. Most

very catastrophic flesh wounds can be healed up with this saline therapy.

Recently we have been using a new, exciting method of healing a wound where bone is exposed. We have been using equine amnion, a part of a mares expelled placenta, to create a type of biological dressing over the bone. We have harvest the amnion ourselves and usually have a supply of some frozen at the clinic. Another biological wound therapy we have been using is unpasteurized honey. Honey is readily available, easy to use, and a great alternative to antibiotic creams or ointments.

Puncture wounds are also very common and occur mostly in the chest and groin. A lot are as a result of horses running through the bush and impaling themselves on sticks. Veterinarians prefer if you leave the stick or foreign body in place until they arrive. We will remove them when proper hemorrhage control tools are available. Punctures are notorious for becoming extremely infected and resulting in copious amounts of discharge. If this discharge persists more than a few days suspect a piece of stick still remaining and seek veterinary attention. These dirty, anaerobic wounds are also highly prone to promote Tetanus and should always accompany a tetanus vaccination booster.

The most important take home message is to consult your veterinarian immediately who will happily help you assess the severity, course of action and management to lead you to a successful outcome!

Peace casinos generated $28.9M in gambling revenues last year Gambling revenues took a dip in Fort St. John and Dawson Creek last fiscal year, according to new numbers from the BC Lottery Corporation.

Revenues generated at the two Chances gaming centres totalled $28.99 million in 2018-19, down slightly from $29.67 million in 2016-17.

At Chances Fort St. John, revenues totalled $16.63 million, down by $44,000, but still relatively on par with 2017-18 revenues of $16.68 million.

Revenues earned the casino $4.45 million in operator commission, and another $833,000 in development commissions for facility investments.

At Chances Dawson Creek, revenues totalled $12.35 million, down from $12.99 million last year.

Slots brought in $12.2 million, down from $12.52 million in 201718. Bingo brought in $157,000, down from $477,000 last year.

The casino took $3.17 million in operator commissions, and $573,000 in development commissions.

‘Preserve the farmer’: B.C. agriculture critic tours the Peace B.C.’s opposition critic for agriculture is wrapping up a tour of the Peace region this week and is encouraging his counterparts in government to head north to do the same.

Liberal MLA Ian Paton (Delta South) met with farmers and producer groups alongside MLA Dan Davies to tour their operations and learn more about the research and challenges that come with farming in the north.

“The NDP government and the agriculture minister and her newly formed Agricultural Land Commission need to get on a bus and start travelling the province to see what agriculture is really all about. It’s not about five-acre hobby farms in Saanich growing an acre of organic carrots and beans and potatoes that are being sold at the farmers market

on weekends,” Paton said Friday.

“We got to make sure the bigtime farmers, the conventional farmers, are making a good living and keep them around, because if we want to preserve farmland in this province, all you got to do is preserve the farmer.”

Paton said it was eye-opening to see just how much the ag industry has grown and diversified in the Peace since he first visited as a child in the 1960s during the building of the WAC Bennett Dam. But, farmers are being challenged by recent legislation including Bill 15 and Bill 52, Paton said, which eliminates a farmer’s right to apply for exclusions from the Agricultural Land Reserve, and limits their ability to build more structures or es-

tablish a value-added business on their land.

The new legislation also eliminates the two-zone farm land system put in place by the former Liberal government, and does away with regional panels that made local decisions on the development of farmland.

Those changes make it tough for a farm family wanting to hand down the farm to their children, and build a second home, Paton said. It also makes it hard for northern farmers to maximize their income outside the growing season by being able to have an accessory business on their land, such as an autobody or welding shop, he said.

“What they’re doing is giving more control and power to state,” EXT:png:END EXT said Paton, whose father was a former chairman of the Agricultural Land Commission.

“I’m a believer that if you want the next generation to take an active role in the farm, and mom and dad want to retire, you have to give the family members an opportunity to live on the farm. You cannot take away that opportunity; you can’t have kids commuting from downtown Fort St. John to the farm.”

Paton, a third generation dairy farmer, said farming is different in each region of the province, from the tree fruit and wine industry in the Lower Mainland and Okanagan,

to the beef cattle industry in the Chilcotin, to the grain and oilseed industry in the Peace.

Keeping them all profitable is key to the future of farming in B.C., he said.

“As long as farmers are making a good living they’re going to continue to farm, and their kids and their grandkids are going to want to continue to farm too,” Paton said.

“But when we see farmers not making a decent living, that’s when they start pulling up the reins and saying, ‘Well, let’s put the farm up for sale,’ and that’s when you get speculators coming in to buy farmland.”

Peace livestock producers eligible for tax deferrals Producers throughout the Peace Region will be eligible for 2019 tax relief as a result of extreme weather conditions.

Agriculture Canada announced the designated regions in a July 22 news release in which it notes “livestock producers in Western Canada and Quebec are experiencing significant forage shortages due to drought conditions, supporting an early designation under the livestock tax deferral provision. Ongoing analysis and consultations will continue to determine if additional regions will be added to the designated list.”

Producers in the designated areas can defer until 2020 some of the 2019 proceeds, if any, from the sale of breeding stock. Some producers had to downsize their breeding herds because of droughtinduced feed shortages earlier this year.

Agriculture Canada said the regions in which producers are eligible for the deferral are those where forage shortfalls of 50 percent or more were caused by either drought or excess moisture.

Weather, climate and production data were used to determine the designated areas, it said.

To defer income for tax purposes, producers must have reduced their breeding

herds by at least 15 percent. If that reduction was less than 30 percent of the herd, 30 percent of the income from net sales can be deferred.

If the breeding herd was reduced by 30 percent or more, 90 percent of the income from net sales can be deferred.

“In the case of consecutive years of drought or excess moisture and flood conditions, producers may defer sales income to the first year in which the region is no longer prescribed,” Agriculture Canada said on its website.

In a news release announcing the tax deferral program, federal agriculture minister Marie-Claude Bibeau acknowledged the challenges created by drought.

“It is a priority for our government to quickly determine how the livestock tax deferral will be authorized to ensure that our producers have the support necessary to make informed herd management decisions and to help them keep their businesses strong,” Bibeau said.

Canadian High School Rodeo Finals: Ben Jackson wins all around, Wyatte Copeland wins boys cutting

Fort St. John’s Wyatte Copeland is the Peace Region’s lone senior Canadian High School Champion after he won the boys cutting event at the 2019 Canadian High School Rodeo Finals in Merritt, July 26 to 28. Copeland also won the boys cutting short go for an extra cash prize, and was named the Canadian reserve all around champion.

While Ben Jackson wasn’t the Canadian champion in every single event, he had a great weekend and won the senior boys all around title. Jackson was unable to defend his 2018 Canadian tie down roping title, settling for second in 2019. However, he did win both the tie down and steer wrestling short go rounds.

Dawson Creek’s Twiggy Esau was the only junior rider from the Peace Region to win a Canadian title, becoming the Canadian junior pole bending champion. She also won the first go round of the girl’s goat tying event as well.

Gracie Chapple of Fort St. John was the Canadian rodeo queen for the weekend.

A year ago, Keily Stewart had never considered the idea of being a part of Calgary Stampede royalty, nor was she interested. Little did she know that 12 months later the experience would change her life.

Stewart grew up around horses at the family farm in Baldonnel.

Though she wasn’t involved much in rodeo, her father, Glenn, traveled the world teaching horsemanship clinics and horses were in her blood. Stewart first heard of the opportunity to be the Calgary Stampede Rodeo Princess in the spring of 2018, but it took some convincing before she decided to apply.

“Someone told my dad about it and he mentioned it to me. I was very opposed to the idea at first because I didn’t think it suited me and couldn’t do it. We talked about it and he told me about the impor-

tance of being pushed outside your comfort zone, so I decided to apply,” said Stewart.

She began the month-long competition in September of 2018, which consisted of giving both prepared and impromptu speeches, giving interviews, and displaying good horsemanship and riding ability. She was named 2019 Calgary Stampede Princess on September 24, 2018, and began her one-year term in the position at that point.

“Our role was to promote and preserve the values of the Stampede, and the hospitality and community of Calgary,” said Stewart.

To fully enjoy the experience, however, Stewart had to get over the hurdle of public speaking and constantly being in the public eye.

“Public speaking is something that really intimidated me and was a challenge. I grew up leading a reserved and peaceful lifestyle, but this was very different.”

Being the Stampede Princess culminated with the actual 10-day event, July 5 to 14. Each night, before the chuckwagon races, the three members of the royalty would alternate giving a prepared speech to roughly 35,000 people.

“We were essentially welcoming people to the greatest outdoor show on earth. By the time I did it a second time I had so much fun and

“It’s a full-time job, which most people don’t understand and I didn’t either. We went to almost 450 events throughout Alberta and the world,” Stewart said.

Now that the Stampede is over, Stewart’s time as Calgary Stampede Princess is winding down, and it’s given her a chance to reflect on the experience.

“It was a really busy 10 days and I learned something every day. You’re extremely tired but in the end I was truly grateful for the people I got to meet. It’s cheesy, but there are so many conversations I will cherish forever and I wouldn’t have those experiences if I didn’t dive in like I did,” Stewart said.

Her plan going forward is to come back to the ranch and work on her horsemanship, and see what opportunities come next.

“It’s an experience that will take a lifetime to truly and fully understand and appreciate. It’s been such a huge learning curve for me and it’s very much a blur right now.”

Red meat sector: strong global demand outweighs tensions Martha Roberts Economics Editor FCC FCC Ag Economics is doing a mid-year checkin on our January 2019 Outlooks. Throughout July and August, we’ll update our expectations about profitability across seven Canadian ag sectors (dairy, broilers, red meat, food processing, horticulture, agribusiness and grains, oilseeds and pulses). We’ll describe what’s happened in 2019 to-date and what to monitor in the next six months.

A good start to the year for cattle and beef operators will likely be negated in the second half of 2019, leading to a year of challenged profitability for both cow-calf operators and feedlots. The growth in first quarter overall cattle receipts from strong beef production and exports is expected to decline, while feed conditions worsen, marketings slow and seasonal prices dip. Weaker revenues will be accompanied by higher feed costs.

We forecast mixed profitability for Canada’s hog sector for the remainder of 2019. Over the first six months, the sector benefitted from increasing hog prices and a decline in feed costs.

We expect positive margins to round out the year even if feed costs will likely rise. Global demand for pork may grow enough this year to support prices and Canadian farm revenues.

An opportunity to lock-in long-term interest rates Four major drivers have helped shape the red meat sector to date in 2019: Geopolitical tensions, African Swine Fever (ASF) in Asia and elsewhere, expectations of weather-related impacts on production of feed grains, consumer appetite for red meat The net result of 2018’s market upheaval for Canadian hog producers was a 9.4% year-overyear (YoY) fall in farm cash receipts in the first three months of 2019. That came on the heels of a 9.0% fall in 2018. A shutdown of the world’s largest export market for U.S. soybeans helped hog margins. The U.S. crop glut that rounded out the 2018-19 MY lowered feed costs for the sector between January and June - sorely needed while trade tensions pressured hog prices.

Prices then climbed significantly in April and May in response to an anticipated tighter pork supply as ASF spread through China. The big question that remains in 2019 for both Canadian and global meat production is the shifting balance between global supply and demand of both meat and crops.

Chinese demand is expected to continue growing as ASF leads to a decline in the pork supply. China’s meat consumption represents 27% of global meat consumption, around 60% of which is pork. The USDA expects China to import a record amount of pork (+41% YoY), beef (+15% YoY) and chicken (+68% YoY) this year. These projections are based on a 10% projected decline in Chinese 2019 pork production – a relatively modest estimate that could easily be exceeded.

Higher hog prices have driven U.S. production higher with a 4% increase in the first six months of 2019. That was made possible by recent productivity gains and supported by strong consumer demand for U.S. pork. The higher U.S. production has kept hog prices from climbing further despite the anticipated growth in ASF-related global demand. The USDA expects U.S. hog prices to stay above 2018 levels, now that Mexico has rescinded tariffs on U.S. pork and both North American and global markets continue to strengthen.

Widespread dryness in the Canadian Prairies and poor pasture conditions make it challenging for producers to find enough feed at reasonable prices. With fewer acres devoted to soybeans this year given Chinese tariffs, both U.S. and Canadian producers signalled early intentions to plant more corn. Excessive moisture in Ontario and the U.S. at time of seeding helped push corn prices higher, with negative implications for feed costs.

That outlook is now less clear. U.S. corn stocks are up at the start of the 2019-20 marketing year and may be boosted further if June’s USDA Acreage Report is correct. The wet planting delay across much of the U.S. Corn Belt was expected to reduce acres planted by considerably more than was reported. That news prompted a significant drop in the corn price.

Even with that decline, we expect higher feed costs for the second half of 2019. The USDA projected average corn price is US$3.70.

Futures prices are forecasting them even higher. Canadian corn production has most recently been projected to fall YoY, due to prevented plantings in Ontario, prompting large increases in imports.

The expected deterioration of the feed outlook may not be as severe as earlier estimates, based on expectations of very low supplies, suggested. However, feed costs may still contribute to a dampening of 2019 U.S. cattle production and thereby help lower North American cattle prices. A stable Canadian beef cow herd and increased marketing weights have led to growth of Canadian beef production in the first half of 2019. This larger beef supply was met by strong domestic and global demand, including Japan where Canadian export sales doubled between January and June. Price swings have since reversed the cattle sector’s early upward trend. The USDA forecasts the 2019 third quarter fed steer price at US$110/cwt., the fourthquarter at US$114/cwt. and the 2019 annual price at US$117/cwt.

A continued bright spot is consumer demand for red meat, both here and globally. Trends in Canada’s retail meat prices have fared well over the last year relative to most food items: All animal protein retail prices climbed on average at similar rates in May: 1.4% for pork and 2.5% for beef and chicken YoY. Canadian overall food prices climbed 3.5% YoY. Those pricing trends’ impact on consumer demand will be boosted by strength in the Canadian economy. Canada’s unemployment rate was 5.5% in June 2019 (near the lowest level since 1976) and average hourly earnings grew at a 3.8% annual pace.

Early 2019 slowdown pauses rate hikes - loonie hovers around US$0.75 Interest rates and the value of the Canadian dollar have had an impact on the profitability of Canadian red meat producers in the first half of 2019.

The Canadian economy recorded a 0.4% increase in real GDP in the first quarter of 2019, following a 2018 fourth-quarter 0.3% increase.

The Bank of Canada (BoC) expects the pace of economic growth to pick up in the second half of 2019, with inflation expected to trend around the bank’s 2% mid-point target.

A slower pace for economic growth has significantly changed the January outlook for interest rates. We don’t expect the BoC to lift its policy interest rate for the remainder of 2019, and financial markets believe a rate cut is possible. This has pushed long-term interest rates lower, resulting in opportunities for businesses to lock in historically-low long-term fixed rates.

Our January forecast of a US$0.75 loonie was right on the money up to mid-June. The future path of interest rates in Canada and the U.S. as well as the strength of the oil market matter for the exchange rate outlook – which will impact livestock and feed prices.

The U.S. economy has shown some strength with a 3.2% increase in real GDP for the first quarter of 2019, in line with the 2018 economic performance. But in March the U.S. Fed chairman slashed the forecast for 2019 rate hikes from two to zero. Peter Weitzel wins grand champ honours to end 4-H season

It’s a win fit for a final year in 4-H: Peter Weitzel won his first grand champion prize at the group’s annual Achievement Days at the North Peace Fall Fairgrounds last weekend.

Weitzel, of Wonowon 4-H, had this year’s Grand Champion Steer, a 1,564-pound Simmental named Buddy from the breeders at Crystal Springs Ranch. Buddy was born last March, and weaned at 980 pounds. He added another 600 by the time judges had a look at him Saturday, July 6, and remarked at the “phenomenal piece of beef.”

“What the judge was looking for was how finished he was, meaning how much fat cover he has, and then how much muscle he has, which is your meat,” Weitzel said, adding it felt good to win the honours.

Buddy sold after the show for $3.50 per pound to Buds Vac Service; the reserve cham-

pion, a steer from Laycee Wiebe of Prespatou 4-H, weighed 1,554 pounds and sold for $3.50/ lb to Save-On Foods.

Weitzel raised four cattle this year, and is the last in his line of siblings who have gone through 4-H, learning animal stewardship and leadership skills. Ranching is in his family’s blood and roots, though there are some standard things any 4-Her needs to look for when selecting their steer, Weitzel said.

First, they need to choose a steer they know will perform come Achievement Days, and then be up to the hard task of getting the animal ready for exhibition throughout the fall, winter, and spring.

“He was just a big, chonky, muscular calf,” Weitzel said of Buddy.

“They need to be fed twice a day, they need

to be halter broke, they need to be clipped, they need to be groomed,” he added.

Weitzel, 18, is finishing his time in 4-H as president of the Wonowon club and as an ambassador for the program in the North Peace, emceeing events and promoting the hard work of its clubs.

Over the last nine years, Weitzel said he’s learned how to take care of and judge cattle. But the biggest life skill he’s gained is public speaking, he said.

“I wouldn’t have been able to talk to you when I first started,” he said.

Weitzel heads to New Zealand early next year to attend bible school and spend some time backpacking. When he returns home, he plans to study ranch management at either Olds or Lakeland college.

Across America on a 1919 Henderson Motorcycle? Yes. A Q & A Interview with Mark Hunnibell I had gotten the information about this man, Mark Hunnibell and his fully restored 1919 Henderson and the trip he has planned, see below. I knew I wanted to know more and thought I’d share what I learned with you!

“Royal Air Force Captain Charles Kenilworth “C.K.” Shephard explored miles of territory on his trip across America outlined in his book Across America by Motor-Cycle, published in 1922. Nearly 100 years later, United States Air Force Captain Mark Leslie Hunnibell retraces C.K.’s path in his own book. With annotations and updates, anyone with a wanderlust to follow C.K. Shepherd’s original adventure can now do so with the benefit of additional 250 photos and illustrations, 750 detailed notations, and thoroughly researched facts to fill in the gaps of the original story. In addition, the centennial book includes many photos by C.K. Shepherd never seen before, plus a foreword by his son.

This summer, nearly 100 years later, Mark will be retracing C.K. Shepherd’s original journey on his own vintage 1919 Henderson fourcylinder motorcycle in an exciting trip that will be shared to the world via social media including Facebook Live, drone video and to newsletter subscribers. Also, Mark has planned stops along the trip of over 4,500-miles for book signings, media appearances, rallies, and events.”

The 1922 book, Across America by Motor-Cycle, is the story told by Captain C.K. Shepherd, a Royal Air Force (RAF) veteran of WWI from England who crossed America by motorcycle in 1919 after the war. In mid-June, within two weeks of arriving in Manhattan, C.K. bought a top-of-the-line Henderson four-cylinder motor-

cycle and was hot on the trail for California.

In 1922, C.K.’s book was published, the story of his transcontinental journey in the summer of 1919 through sixteen states covering nearly 5,000 miles.

I discovered C.K.’s book about his 1919 trip some 20 years ago and was inspired by the epic journey on the same kind of motorcycle I owned and was ever-so-slowly restoring. I became consumed with the idea of retracing his journey, but the book lacked a detailed itinerary, leading me to complex research in order to reverse engineer the route. In the process, I discovered many details about C.K.’s ride and life that I thought many would appreciate even if they had never read the original book. #2 - Besides the restoration of the bike, how long have you spent planning this journey?

The planning in earnest has taken about five years, mostly part time as I had available. It involved thousands of hours of analysis of the 1922 book and searching out period publications as to available roads, routes, and other conditions. The byproduct of all that planning is my new book, Across America by Motor-Cycle - Fully Annotated Centennial Edition, that includes C.K.’s original 1922 book but embeds nearly 1,000 photos, notes, and illustrations that I found along the way to tell as much of the story as is possible. C.K.’s book documented an amazing journey but regretfully did not include many details of the trip and the man who took it. This book answers them all. #3 - I see you need a logistics person, and connections to the riding clubs - have you found someone to help you there?

I think I have the minimum “safety rider” aspect locked in (someone to ride along, check the road ahead, warn me of unexpected issues,

etc.) but I am suddenly in need of someone to drive my truck and pull my trailer that will have parts for en routesupport. I am disappointed to be left hanging at such a late date but that doesn’t fill the seat, so I do need help. Even if someone could drive for a few days and then head home after the next person showed up, that would work. I just need to nail this down ASAP because it is, all of a sudden, a huge distraction I did not expect to be dealing with. #4 - Why should people get involved?

For C.K. Shepherd, this was a solo trip, on his own, to see America and meet Americans. For me, I am interested in seeing America and meeting Americans, but I can’t do it alone. Too much traffic today and there are no more Henderson dealers in every city to overhaul my engine every 1,000 miles like C.K. ended up having to do.

So folks can help out in a grass-roots fashion to become part of history, witness an amazing century-old machine in operation, learn more about America’s early history with roads and interstate tourism, and – perhaps even more helpful – educate me about what they know of the regions through which I will be riding. #5 - How can they get involved?

I am going to be able to accommodate a limited number of motorcyclists who may want to “ride along.” I have received a sanction from the American Motorcyclist Association as a Grand Tour, and will have all the forms and will start each day with a rider’s meeting to go over the route, the stops, the challenges, and issues.

#6 - Anything specific you’d like the public to know about this trip?

I am not a life-long motorcyclist.

In fact, I am a true novice motorcyclist, with this 1919 Henderson be-

ing my first real motorcycle (I got my license on a 50cc Honda Express in the summer of 1980), so I have some apprehension about my own abilities. C.K. was 24 years old when he took his trip. I will be almost 62 years old when I get to San Francisco. While C.K. had no support structure following him on the road, the need for support that I have creates numerous logistical issues that C.K. did not have.

Luckily I have supporters, friends, mechanics, and experienced motorcyclists that have been helping me and will continue to be supporting me during this ride, leaving me confident that this will be the rewarding and enjoyable dream I have been longing for.

All of the above said, it should be evident that I will need (and appreciate) all the well-meaning advice from the public. If you know of a “must stop” or “must see” location, PLEASE do not hold back.

Suffice it to say that, if this motorcycle was anything other than a truly oneof-a-kind original Red Henderson, and was equipped with anything other than the original chassis and engine, I would not have felt compelled to finance the extraordinary efforts at resurrection to bring that particular engine back from what would have normally cause it to be declared dead.

So there you have it folks, another interesting event to be a part of, one that will be added into history books I am sure!
