B.C. Ministry of Agriculture and Food, March 13, 2024

More B.C. farmers producing grapes, cherries, tree fruit and berries will receive support to replant their vineyards, farms and orchards to make them more resilient to climate change, strengthening the province’s economy and food security.

“There are few things better than locally grown fruit and locally crafted B.C. wine,” said Premier David Eby. “We’re taking action to support farmers who have been hit hard by a changing climate with a new task force and replant program, which will help about 1,000 more growers revitalize their farms and protect their businesses. The security of our food and our economy depend on the strength and resilience of our farmers.”

A new enhanced replant program will provide as much as $70 million in support to help producers replace damaged, diseased and low-producing vines, plants and trees with climate-resilient varieties that produce in-demand, premium fruit.

“Our government is here for B.C. producers who are facing challenges from severe vine and orchard damage from extreme weather, as well as those impacted by pests, plant disease and changing consumer and market demand,” said Pam Alexis, Minister of Agriculture and Food. “This historic investment will help producers replant for a changing climate with more support than ever before, which will strengthen our economy and ensure people can enjoy B.C. fruit and wine into the future.”

The new funding builds on the $15-million Perennial Crop Renewal Program launched in spring 2023, which has helped more than 200 producers remove diseased and unproductive plants and replace them with higher quality crops.

JMC Farms in Chilliwack received $70,000 to remove 14 acres of Elliot blueberry plants infected by scorch virus and revitalize the soil to prepare for replanting.

“The crop-renewal program was easy to apply for and allowed our farm to avoid a serious financial burden from the removal of our blueberry plants,” said Marc Dalton, owner and blueberry farmer, JMC Farms. “The program helped our farm to be set up so we could adjust to chang-

ing market and climate conditions and allow us to be successful in the future. I am pleased to see the program will be expanded to include more replant costs since it provides good value to support farmers.”

Government staff will work with industry associations to develop planting guidelines to ensure replanted varieties have enhanced adaptability and performance in the face of climate change, pests, disease and market pressures. Producers will make replant choices based on the best available agronomic science to ensure they can handle extreme-weather events. Application information will be made available as soon as the guidelines are established.

As part of this investment, government is also establishing a B.C. wine-grape sector task force to develop a research and varietal road map for an economically viable B.C. wine-grape industry. The task force will run for two years and provide practical recommendations to producers and the industry about how to remain profitable and resilient. It will be comprised of Canadian and international experts with members anticipated to be identified this year.

“Minister Alexis’s announcement today is confirmation of this government’s commitment to resiliency support for B.C. wine growers,” said Miles Prodan, president and CEO, Wine Growers B.C. “The ongoing climate change effects on B.C. farmers, highlighted by recent freeze events, is real and directly impacts individuals and families that make up our industry. We look forward to working with the ministry to ensure B.C. vineyards come back better than ever to continue to produce the quality wine consumers have come to expect and that the B.C. wine industry continues to be a significant driver for the B.C. economy.”

Additionally, the Ministry of Public Safety and Solicitor General is working with manufacturers, with a spe-

cific focus on wineries, to support better experiences for visitors and promote tourism. In response to industry feedback, the Province is working to implement a suite of policy changes to enhance visitor experiences at wineries and other liquor-manufacturing sites in time for the summer. This work was informed by in-person visits to more than 30 liquor manufacturers.

“Our government remains committed to partnering with B.C. wineries and grape growers to guarantee the long-term sustainability and success of an industry that forms a fundamental part of the province,” said Roly Russell, Parliamentary Secretary for Rural Development. “We know what a difficult time the last few years have been. These improvements for the sector will help give our B.C. wineries more flexibility to deliver the tailored and world-class visitor experience that they provide.”

The new changes in development include:

• supporting better guided-tour experiences that allow people to sit and enjoy a glass of wine while on a tour;

• allowing sales in more places on site, including on tours;

• allowing more flexibility around sampling so manufacturers can customize sampling experiences; and

• allowing manufacturers to sell their product in picnic areas and host people more effectively.

Quick Facts:

• The new investment in a provincial replant program is in addition to the crop insurance and AgriStability income-protection programs the federal and provincial governments operate to support farmers who experience crop losses and income declines.

• It is estimated that B.C. berry, grape and tree fruitgrowers received more than $65 million through crop insurance and AgriStability in 2023.

SARDA AG RESEARCH HOSTING LIMING WORKSHOPS

B.C. Ministry of Agriculture and Food, March 13, 2024

SARDA Ag Research is hosting a series of liming workshops in the region to help educate local farmers on the benefits of adding the process to their farming practices.

The three workshops will be held throughout the Peace Region, including April 3 at 9 am at the St. Isidore Cultural Centre and Hall, at 2:30 pm on April 3 at the Triangle Hall west of High Prairie, and April 4 at 9 am at the Saskatoon Lake Hall north of Wembley.

“Liming is not a common practice in the area yet, but many producers are interested in the practice,” says SARDA ag research extension co-ordinator Shelleen Gerbig. “There are several reasons why a farmer would consider liming. Liming can increase the number and productivity of crops you can grow on the land as some crops are very sensitive to acidic soils.”

Lime can act like a soil conditioner, helping to control the soil acidity by neutralizing the effects of acids from Nitrogen fertilizer, slurry and high rainfall. Gerbig says liming raises the pH of the soil, which makes nutrients more available to crops, increasing production.

“Land is a finite resource and liming has been shown to increase land productivity,” says Gerbig. “Liming may be a way to increase the productivity of acidic soil areas on farmland as spot treatments or as entire fields.”

A big concern for many producers in the region has been a Canola disease that has been found in various areas of the north. Gerbig says liming has been shown to benefit the fight against clubroot, and it can be considered as an aide in a location where a clubroot patch has been identified on farmland.

“Farmers will learn about the sources of lime in the Peace Region, how to calculate the rate of lime to apply and the application costs,” says Gerbig of the workshops. “Farmers will also learn how to assess soils and infield variability. They will also learn about crop responses and productivity increases after applications.”

Gerbig explains the value of farmland has increased substantially and it makes the cost of liming, which can be costly, easier to justify economically.

“This a great opportunity to meet industry leaders in liming applications from the Peace Region, learn about liming benefits and estimate costs and challenges of liming,” she says. “It is also an opportunity to network with other producers.”

The liming process adds calcium to the soil. It boosts the availability of phosphates and prevents deficiency of molybdenum. It also helps to promote earthworm activity and nitrogen fixing bacteria, it will also help breakdown organic material that will release nitrogen, phosphorus, sulphur, and microelements.

The workshops are being hosted by SARDA Ag Research and Peace Region Living Lab and will be provided at no cost and no pre-registration required.

For additional information and times for the three workshops, please visit the SARDA Ag Research website at www. sarda.ca/event/ to view the flyer. Attendees can also contact Shelleen Gerbig at extension@sarda.ca or Calvin Yoder at calvinyoder123@gmail.com for more information.

Alook at the North American drought monitor heading into the 2024 planting season reveals a shift in some of the worst drought conditions compared to a year earlier.

As the map for February 2024 below shows, the most intense North American drought is now plaguing Mexico. Much of that drought appears to have migrated southward from the U.S. southern Plains, which although still impacted by abnormal dryness and drought, is vastly improved over a year earlier.

Meanwhile, extreme drought in Nebraska last year has also improved, while conditions have deteriorated in Iowa, particularly in the northeastern part of the state.

Moving northward into the Prairies, widespread moderate and severe drought has largely remained unchanged from last year but morphed into pockets of extreme and exceptional drought in parts of Alberta.

The drought in Mexico has forced water rationing in Mexico City, one of the world’s largest cities, with some experts suggesting it could as early as June when there is not enough water to pump out to parts of the metropolis of 22.5 million.

In a report this week, the USDA’s Foreign Agricultural Services (FAS) pegged 2023-24 Mexican corn production at 23.2 million tonnes, down 17 per cent on the year, in part due to “severe and exceptional drought conditions.” However, the same FAS report predicted a seven per cent rebound in corn output for 2024-25, based on a higher planted area amid producer optimism for drought recovery.

At the end of February 2023, moderate to exceptional drought was affecting almost 26% of the entire area of North America, little changed from the previous two years. (An estimate was not available for the end of February 2024). As recently as February 2020, moderate to exceptional drought was only impacting about five per cent of North America.

PROJECT AURORA AND FIBER INTERNET IN SADDLE HILLS COUNTY

Saddle Hills County is pleased to formally announce the beginning of an exciting partnership with Canadian Fiber Optics and Northern Lights Fiber, to provide high-speed fiber internet connections to residents of Saddle Hills County.

The County is proud to be one of the first rural municipalities in the world to bring fiber internet to a typically underserviced area.

“As we look towards a future where digital technology is increasingly at the forefront of how we communicate, learn, and do business, it cannot be overlooked how much a fiber internet connection means to a rural community like Saddle Hills County” Reeve Hubert.

The vast majority of residents will be eligible to be connected as part of the project, with approximately 787 households included in the initial scope. The hookups will be provided at no cost, with affordable low-cost plans offered by Northern Lights Fiber, from as low as $89 per month, or $70 per month for seniors.

WHY FIBER AND WHY IS IT BETTER?

While wireless connections and satellite links may serve current requirements, Saddle Hills County has chosen to bring the most modern infrastructure to not only support our residents and producers, but to also encourage economic growth well into the future.

Fiber internet has virtually no limit on speed or capacity and because of this abundance and the near limitless potential to increase these, there is no need to upgrade, rebuild, or reinvest in new fiber infrastructure for many generations to come. This means that the current installations will still service, and vastly outperform, any other service even decades down the line.

In the modern age, a strong and reliable internet connection is vital, not just for day-to-day life but also for business. This connection will mean that our core industries, such as agriculture, oil and gas, energy, and forestry, will not only be able to thrive in Alberta but also as competitors on the international stage.

HOW TO FIND OUT IF YOU ARE ELIGIBLE:

TO RECEIVE A FIBER CONNECTION

Most homes in the County are eligible, with a few exceptions. The County and Northern Lights Fiber requests that anyone interested in fiber service, please complete a Fiber Access Request (FAR) at NorthernLightsFiber.ca/Project-Aurora.

MORE INFORMATION

Construction has already begun in some areas of the County, although there is lots of work in the days, weeks, months, and years ahead. This is a multi-year project, with an estimated three-year timeline.

An experience booklet has been mailed to homes within the County, with information on construction times, costs, business connections, and lots more.

Saddle Hills County is just one part of this multi-million dollar project, brought to realization by funding from the Governments of Canada and Alberta, Saddle Hills County, and Canadian Fiber Optics.

Residents and landowners looking for more information on the project are asked to visit www.northernlightsfiber.ca/#residential or call Northern Lights Fiber at 1-888-236-2947. Information will also be posted on the Saddle Hills County website and social media channels, as available.

PROVINCE STRENGTHENS DROUGHT PREPAREDNESS

BC Min of Agriculture and Food, March 18, 2024

Hundreds of B.C. farmers will be better equipped to deal with drought with supports to help manage, collect and store water for crops and livestock.

“Last year, our province faced an unprecedented lack of rain, and this winter we’re seeing snow levels are at remarkable lows, meaning next summer might be even worse,” said Premier David Eby. “Climate change — and drought in particular — makes it tough to secure water for animals, crops and feed, and it makes food more expensive for everyone. Our government heard the call for help from farmers. This money will help build water

storage and buy the equipment farmers tell us they need to keep providing the food we all depend on.”

B.C. farmers will be able to access an additional $80 million in funding through the Agricultural Water Infra-

structure Program to make irrigation more efficient, or to build infrastructure to improve water availability and storage. These actions will benefit stream flows, fish populations and support more sustainable food production.

“Climate change is impacting both water and food security for people in British Columbia, making it challenging for farmers’ livelihoods and affecting local food systems,” said Pam Alexis, Minister of Agriculture and Food. “This is why we’re providing enhanced support to improve on-farm and community water infrastructure so we can grow more food and ensure proper water management during potential floods and drought.”

Launched in June 2023, with an initial $20-million fund, the program is funding 108 projects ranging from water storage, such as agricultural dams and dugouts, to improved water-supply systems for irrigation and livestock. It’s expected the additional funding will benefit hundreds more farmers.

On the territory of the Lheidli T’enneh in Newlands, northeast of Prince George, Hope Farm Organics has been able to increase its water supply through the program, allowing them to grow more fruits and vegetables.

“With uncertain times in changing climate patterns and weather extremes, the Agriculture Water Infrastructure Program helped our vegetable and fruit farm become more resilient in the face of these extremes,” said Andrew Adams, owner, Hope Farm Organics. “This resilience has given me the confidence to continue developing and expanding our crops into the future, which ultimately will help improve British Columbia’s food security and the sustainability of our farm. Water is life.”

The City of Delta received $2 million, which is helping improve the efficiency of the local irrigation system. These enhancements will help ensure water keeps flowing to farmers in times of drought and reinforces food security for people in the region.

“The support our city has received from the B.C. government’s Agricultural Water Infrastructure Program has been instrumental in facilitating crucial irrigation upgrades, greatly benefiting our valued farming community,” said George V. Harvie, mayor of Delta. “This strategic investment not only bolsters water security but also plays a vital role in fostering resilience and sustainability within our local food supply chain.”

Another $3 million will go toward regional workshops that will provide demonstrations, education, best practices and tools for water and irrigation use specific to drought-affected communities. This is in addition to the Agricultural Water Management Workshops and Drought Management Engagement Sessions that government staff have been leading in close to 30 communities throughout the province over the past month and continuing in the weeks ahead.

Quick Facts:

• The B.C. government is providing as much as $80 million to expand the Agriculture Water Infrastructure Program, which had previously received one-time funding of $20 million.

• Agricultural producers can apply for funding starting in early April for smaller-scale on-farm projects through the Beneficial Management Practices program.

• Applications for larger farm projects and more complex community-based projects will open in May through the Agricultural Water Infrastructure Program.

• Ministry of Agriculture and Food staff are working with partners in the agricultural sector on allocation of funding for the larger strategic projects.

• Both programs are administered by the Investment Agriculture Foundation of BC.

• An additional $3 million will go toward the Agricultural Drought Resource Extension Program to provide support for regional workshops and onfarm demonstrations.

KEEP YOUR PREMISES IDENTIFICATION ACCOUNT UP TO DATE

Effective emergency response and the ability to protect your livestock and poultry depends on accurate account information.

Agri-News: March 18, 2024

Premises Identification (PID) is a tool used to plan for, control, and prevent the spread of livestock and poultry disease, such as avian influenza or foot and mouth disease, and is crucial for the livestock industry in the event of an animal health incident,” says Dr. Keith Lehman, chief provincial veterinarian with the Alberta government. “The quicker we can locate livestock, the more quickly and accurately we can respond. In fact, PID was used heavily in 2022 and 2023 to help control the spread of avian influenza and disseminate information to poultry owners in the province and will continue to be an important tool in managing the anticipated spread in future years.”

PID links livestock and poultry to premises, which are land locations within the PID system. Having accurate animal locations, contact information and other key data in one system is critical for a quick and effective emergency response.

PID can also be used as an early warning system to share information on diseases that could affect certain species on your premises. This is why it is crucial to have accurate species types listed on your account as these notifications are tailored to the species that would be affected.

The PID system has also become increasingly important for planning and response to environmental disasters like the floods and wildfires seen in recent years, further supporting the need to have accurate contact information and information about the animals on your premises.

“Effective emergency response and the ability to protect your animals depends on accurate information. It is important that you update your PID account when there are changes to your operation (for example, contact information, species, and maximum capacity) or if you no longer have livestock on your premises. Inaccurate and

outdated information can put your animals at risk during an emergency by delaying notification or delivering an incorrect response from emergency responders.”

The following PID account information should be reviewed regularly:

• account contact information

• emergency 24/7 contact information for the premises

• location of the premises where animals are located (legal land description or geo-referenced coordinates)

• type of premises/operation (e.g., farm, abattoir, livestock auction, stable)

• types of animals raised, kept, displayed, assembled, or disposed of on the premises

• maximum capacity for each species of animal on the premises

“For those who don’t have a PID account, it is free, simple to apply for and easy to update,” points out Dr. Lehman. “If livestock or poultry are in your care and control, you need to apply for a PID account and obtain at least one PID number. If you operate a commingling site, such as a boarding stable, community pasture, livestock market, feedlot or fair ground, you are required to obtain a PID account, register all your commingling sites and provide the PID number(s) to the users of your site(s).”

Producers can review and update their information online, or by calling 310FARM (3276) for more information.

HELP ON THE WAY TO B.C. VETERINARIAN CLINICS THAT TREAT FARM ANIMALS

Clinics that help B.C. farmers and ranchers care for their animals will have extra sets of skilled hands in their offices through a new program that covers summer placement costs for both veterinary and veterinary technologist students.

“Canada’s farmers and ranchers rely on the support of veterinary professionals to care for the health and welfare of their animals,” said Lawrence MacAulay, federal Minister of Agriculture and Agri-Food. “By offering students the experience and skills they need to treat livestock and farm animals, this investment will help ensure that B.C.’s veterinary offices can continue to meet demand for services well into the future.”

The $300,000 pilot program offers up to $6,000 per placement to help with wages and travel costs, and could support the placements of up to 50 students this year.

“Introducing veterinary students to rural veterinary practices and communities will help them realize it can be a very rewarding career and lifestyle,” said Pam Alexis, B.C. Minister of Agriculture and Food. “These placements will offer clinics immediate staffing help over the summer, as well as the prospect of attracting full-time employees after graduation, while providing more support to B.C. farmers seeking care for their animals.”

Eligible veterinary practices must be accredited by the College of Veterinarians of B.C. and offer services for livestock and farm animals that may include cattle, swine, sheep, goats, poultry, bison and fish. Practices that provide services to clients at any production scale (e.g. large-scale, small lot) are eligible to apply.

“This is great news for students, for farmers and producers, and of course for the animals. Food-animal health is a vital component of B.C.’s agriculture programs and of veterinary medicine,” said Dr. Fraser Davidson, president of the Society of BC Veterinarians. “This new funding will facilitate students to learn on the job and will help support our hardworking and very busy large-animal veterinarians throughout B.C.”

Eligible students must have completed their first year of studies and be enrolled in an American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA) accredited veterinary college or an AVMA or Canadian Veterinary Medical Association (CVMA) Animal Health Technology / Veterinary Technician program.

COLD PLASMA COULD BE HOT STUFF FOR GRAIN GROWERS, SAY RESEARCHERS

A low-temperature version of the matter that makes up stars may offer a better way to decontaminate wheat and barley.

Researcher Ehsan Feizollahi demonstrates the cold plasma steeping technology he and his research team are developing to decontaminate barley. Barley grains are immersed in plasma-activated water in a beaker.

Using plasma — the stuff of outer space — University of Alberta researchers have found an effective way to decontaminate grain tainted by mould, and also boost seed germination.

By treating wheat and barley grains with atmospheric cold plasma — a relatively low-temperature version of the typically superheated matter — they were able to lower the levels of harmful toxins caused by fungi that grow in warm, humid conditions and commonly infect grain.

The discovery “can provide the food processing and livestock feed industries with more effective, efficient ways to process grains that are safe for consumption,” says Ehsan Feizollahi, who led the research to earn a PhD in food science and technology from the Faculty of Agricultural, Life & Environmental Sciences.

Known as mycotoxins, the harmful secondary metabolites infect more than 25 per cent of globally produced grains each year, including barley, wheat and oat grains in Western Canada, resulting in lower-quality crops and financial losses to farmers. They also pose threats to human and livestock health, including cancer, lung disease, brain and kidney damage, or even death.

Because mycotoxins resist high temperatures, removing them from grains is challenging, Feizollahi says.

“There is no effective method currently available for reducing mycotoxins on grain,” he notes, adding that common food processing practices such as roasting, baking and frying may only partially remove mycotoxins.

“We needed to find better methods of decontamination.”

FASTER, BETTER DECONTAMINATION

In the field of physics, plasma is considered the fourth state of matter along with solid, liquid and gas, and has been attracting attention over the past few years, notes professor M.S. Roopesh, who supervised Feizollahi’s work and studies the wider applications of atmospheric cold plasma through the U of A’s Food Safety and Sustainability Engineering Research lab.

“As an emerging technology, cold plasma shows a lot of potential for reducing food safety risks.”

Atmospheric cold plasma contains highly reactive components that deactivate or reduce the toxins on the surface of the grains.

Barley grains are treated with atmospheric cold plasma to reduce levels of contaminants called mycotoxins caused by fungal infections of the grain.

Feizollahi created two forms of the plasma — one as an ionized gas and one as liquid — and then used them to treat barley and wheat grains infected with two mycotoxins that are particularly troublesome in Canada, called zearalenone and deoxynivalenol.

Using the plasma to decontaminate the grains lowered the levels of the two toxins by 54 per cent, which is a promising start, Roopesh says.

“With optimization for the conditions, figuring in factors such as the type of plasma, treatment conditionals and treatment time, we could achieve much more reduction than 54 per cent. Ultimately, that means farmers could use more of their grain, so there’s less waste, and from the health point of view, humans and animals can consume the grain and not be affected by mycotoxins.”

The researchers also found that the treatment processes they used took only a short time — ranging from one minute to one hour — potentially increasing efficiency for the food processing industry.

The treatments are also environmentally sustainable, Feizollahi notes.

“Making the cold plasma in gas form only requires air, and electricity required for the process can be drawn from renewable sources.”

Nor does cold plasma leave residues on the grain, which eliminates the need for chemical sanitizers currently required in food processing.

“The plasma is highly unstable, so the reactive species in plasma disappear over the time when the plasma generation is stopped,” Roopesh notes.

WIN-WIN FOR BARLEY AND WATER

A plasma steeping technology the researchers developed could also be a key improvement for the barley malting industry.

Now going through the patent process, the cold plasma treatment gave a boost to the grain germination, which is used for malt and beer production, the researchers found.

Steeping the barley in plasma-activated water, rather than regular water, lowered levels of deoxynivalenol in the grain.

“If the malting operations fail to break down this mycotoxin, it can potentially transfer into the end products,” Feizollahi notes.

The plasma-activated water also improved seed germination by 10 to 13 per cent by changing its surface properties, leading to better water absorption, which can boost germination rate.

Along with that, the plasma has the side benefit of decontaminating the water used in the steeping process, which often contains traces of pesticides, bacteria or fungi.

Cleaner water could possibly be reused in food processing and would be more environmentally friendly when discarded, the researchers note.

The technology is open to licensing through the U of A, and next steps would involve more experiments to scale it up for use in the industry.

Feizollahi’s experiments also revealed which factors increase the effectiveness of the treatments he tested, leading the way to further improvement.

“Now we know what specific factors we need to focus on,” notes Roopesh, whose lab is also exploring how to scale up their cold plasma methods for use in reducing microbial contamination in food and water that can cause illnesses from bacterial pathogens like Escherichia coli and Salmonella.

“We’ve gained some foundational knowledge that represents an exciting step forward for food safety and for reducing agricultural product loss.”

The research was supported by funding to Roopesh from Results Driven Agriculture Research, Alberta Agriculture and Irrigation, the Alberta Canola Producers Commission and the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada.

Feizollahi was supported in his research by the J Macgregor Smith Graduate Scholarship, the Andrew Stewart Memorial Graduate Prize, the Canadian Institute of Food Science and Technology Graduate Scholarship Trust, the GSA Academic Travel Grant, the GFTC Legacy Fund Graduate Scholarship, an Alberta Graduate Excellence Scholarship, the Brewing and Malting Barley Research Institute Award in Agronomy, the University of Alberta Doctoral Recruitment Scholarship and the Alberta Barley Student Scholarship.

LONGTIME ARENA JUDGE

Teepee Creek Terror, D.W. Friesen & Sons Ltd., Reprinted with permission from the Teepee Creek Stampede Historical Society

Walter Webber, who claims to have lived within sight of Rat Lake (near La Glace) for the last 64 years, was one of the early judges at Teepee Creek.

“The reason they asked me to judge could have been the fact that I spent 19 years in competition of that sort. Any old cowboy that has been through the mill is always a good possibility for a judge. He should know a good ride from a poor ride and how to point them,” said Walter.

“Ted Rycroft approached me and asked me to judge. I had met Ted in competition, as he was a contestant and a good on at that.”

“I learned to ride in the first place because, like everybody else, we had to learn. It was our chief method of getting anywhere.”

“Riding bucking horses is like a disease — you get a little bit of it, and the next thing you know, you got more of it.”

“The first rodeo that I ever recall having entered was Rio Grande in 1928, and incidentally, I won that one too. I recall, it was a pinto pony.”

“My older brother, Jonas, and I were travelling in a Buick car, and we picked up a wonderful rodeo couple — the Al Nimmons — at Rio Grande, and travelled to a two-day rodeo at Grand Haven, near Fort St. Joh, B.C. I got bucked off both days, But I think Jonas won, if I’m not mistaken.”

“You see, we were absolute farmers at heart, and we would only just get out and attend a few rodeos here and there, and then go back to

hayin’ and breaking. We weren’t professional cowboys by a damn sight!”

“The prize money back in those days was quite something compared with today. One year, I started off down here at a little show in La Glace. I won that on the Monday. I went on to Hythe Tuesday and Wednesday, which I also won. Dawson’s show was on Thursday and Friday, and I also won that. I received $80 for all three shows and thought that I was rich. It was the most money that I had ever earned in a week in my life. Now, they get that for one circingle ride!” exclaimed Walter.

“Nineteen forty-two was my last year of competition, and I think it was 1942 that I started judging at Teepee. I had wanted to compete at Teepee once when the show was at McKenzie’s. I wanted to make a saddle bronc ride, as they just had circingle but at that time they didn’t seem to want outsiders coming in and demonstrating.

“Ed Grant was the big chief out there then.” Bob Rycroft, Sr. met Water Webber in Sexsmith one year on his way out to Teepee on horseback. Bob moved all the ice cream and chocolate bars and booth supplies in the truck box to the front and stuck in something to serve as a partition, and loaded Walter’s horse in the back of the truck with the rest of the goodies. Then he loaded Walter in the cab and off to the stampede grounds they went.

“To begin with, I got eight bucks a day for judging. Then, I always used to have a top qual-

ity association bronc saddle that I rented to the society, for $5 to $7 a day.”

“The pay finally built up to $30 a day. I used to judge at most of the rodeos around.”

“The main things I watched were: the liberties that the rider took with his horse, the amount of chance he took, the class of spurring that he did, and the manner in which he sat in his saddle.”

“One bucking horse worthy of mention was a little roan that they called Number Nine. The very best of our cowboys simply couldn’t ride her — no part of her!”

“Another little incident that comes to mind concerns one of Bob Frakes’ little Wild Cats. I saw her buck her man off and head right out over the fence, to beat old-billy-be-damned, with my good saddle on her back. I just thought that was the end of my saddle as she was most probably heading for the Simonette, because they were a wild bunch — those of Bobby’s. Lo and behold, somebody got around and stopped her and I got my saddle back.”

“Rowe Thompson had a four-up of pintos, driving them in the chuckwagon race. Norman Hollingworth was riding with Rowe, and they came down and made part of a figure eight in front of the grandstand. All of a sudden they caught the gas barrel lengthwise on the front of the wagon. The whole wagon and everything flew straight end over in the air. When they was up about 10 to 12 feet, Rowe and Norman bailed out of there, and the cowboys caught the horses. Luckily, it turned

out that no one was seriously hurt, but it was sure a spectacular show!”

“I used to judge saddle bronc and bareback, but I very seldom judged the steer riding as that made too long a day. There were two other judges for the bronc riding — Les Graystone, of Dow River, and Rowe Thompson, of Bezanson.”

“Mark Rycroft was the announcer for many, many years.

“I continued judging at Teepee Creek as long as Ted Rycroft was alive and managing the show, but I think when Ted passed away, that was the end of my affiliation with the society there,” said Walter.

Don Brown adds to Walter’s story; “One time we wanted Walter to judge here, but he declined, saying “No, I can’t do it. I can’t move fast enough to get out of the way, and somebody will run over me.”

“I gave him a saddle horse and said, “Walter you don’t have to look after him — he’ll look after you.”

THE GRANDE CACHE EXPRESS

The first in a series of History Circle Tours that takes you to all those little museums that everyone says I should stop there one day and then never do and it does it in style!

This first three day tour starts in Nisku at Blackjacks Roadhouse. Blackjacks was chosen because it is close to the Edmonton International Airport, has a Rider Friendly Hotel and a 24-hour truck stop with some of the best food in the region.

You have two options on how you want to do any of our tours… you can head to Grande Cache for day one of Sucker Creek First Nation… our crew chose Sucker Creek.

We had one couple that was late so kickstands up was at 10 a.m. instead of 9 a.m.

We headed toward Highway 60 and Rochefort Bridge Trading Post and Pioneer Museum. With that first 150 kilometres under our belt we took a tour of the museum which is a series of buildings including a school, church, post office and central display room.

This museum is so well done and the depth of history and culture that is on offer is truly impressive as is the quality.

To see more photos of this amazingly well done museum and it’s displays visit Our Flickr Account and this album: Rochefort Bridge Pioneer Museum

After our visit to the museum we stopped into the Hutterite Concession where you can buy produce, home baking, crocheting, blankets and so much more! The place smells like heaven.

Once your mouth is sufficiently watering it’s time to go into the diner and have some of the best homemade fries in the Universe. Mayor Jabush from Mayerthorpe says that a little vinegar makes the fries magical.

With everyone fed and watered it was time to head off to Mayerthorps and the Fallen Four Memorial. This beautiful memorial space is dedicated to the

four RCMP officers: Anthony Gordon, Leo Johnston, Brock Myrol and Peter Schiemann who were killed on March 5, 2005. To learn more about this beautiful memorial visit: Fallen Four

A short jaunt up Highway 43 and we were at the Whitecourt Forestry Museum and Visitor Centre. There is a ton of forestry and community history in this museum. You can wander for a good hour and still not see everything they have to offer.

To view more photos visit our Flickr Album: Whitecourt Forestry Museum

After topping up with fuel, we went off to Swan Hills to see the Swan and Bear sculpture. The incredible talent it took to make this magnificent wilderness sculpture always makes me feel awestruck.

After a beverage and some photos we were off to our next museum, the Kinosayo Museum in Kinuso.

This is one amazing museum and deceptive in regards to its size. There is not one square inch that has been wasted in this space and the history that has been captured here is breathtaking in its vastness and quality.

To view more photos visit our Flickr Album: Kinosayo Museum

Our last stop for the day was the Bannock n Bed Inn located on Sucker Creek First Nation, Treaty 8 Territory.

This place is serene, peaceful, and calming. Owned and operated by Charmaine Willier-Larsen, this B&B features three Glamping Tipi’s — two with single beds and one with a queen bed, one traditional Tipi with two cots and a 30' community/seminar/teaching tipi.

There are also two rooms with a queen bed, one with a double bed and a cabin to rent that has two single beds.

Charmaine is very rooted in her culture and is very willing to share and teach. Her partner in life, Gil is a Metis veteran and brings much to the table at the B&B. Gill helps Charmaine with whatever he can and he’s an important part of this engaging place. If you consider coffee an important part of your morning routine, then you want to ask Gil to make your coffee!

Charmaine is not just a gracious hostess and engaging teacher, she is also a magnificent cook and provides her guests with the opportunity to share in baked and fried bannock and other Indigenous foods. (Bannock is something that Indigenous and Metis people adopted from their Scottish neighbours and made it better therefore making it their own!)

We just happened to be on this tour when the Redrum Motorcycle Club was hosting a fundraiser and weekend rally. We were invited to visit and take part. They had a pretty good group hanging out to listen to the band and many old friendships were rekindled and a few made.

We headed back to the B&B and hung out by the fire sharing stories, using the talking stick and just generally acting like we’d all been friends for years instead of only connecting that morning.

In the morning, after a leisurely continental breakfast we headed into High Prairie and fueled up. On a tour that takes place through the week, the High Prairie Museum is a MUST stop.

To see more Bannock n Bed photos visit our Flickr Gallery

Next month we will take you to Debolt’s Pioneer Museum and Veterans Memorial Gardens & Interpretive Centre in Grande Prairie, then it’s off for some fun on the water!

SOWING SEEDS OF EXCELLENCE IN LACOMBE

The Government of Alberta is establishing Western Crop Innovations (WCI), a new non-profit focused on agriculture research and crop development.

Alberta is a global leader in agriculture research, which results in tangible benefits for farmers, like higher profits and a more abundant food supply at an affordable cost for consumers.

To help further the development and continued innovation of agriculture research, the Field Crop Development Centre (FCDC) has been relaunched as Western Crops Innovations, a non-profit corporation with an interim board. A new structure will revitalize this organization, promote a renewed vision, and better position Alberta to meet the agriculture industry’s needs.

“It’s an exciting time for crop research in Alberta. Western Crop Innovations will carry on the Field Crop Development Centre’s substantial legacy, ensuring its work is addressing the issues farmers are facing in the fields.” RJ Sigurdson, Minister of Agriculture and Irrigation

Officially starting up April 1, WCI will carry on the FCDC’s important research, including its well-known barley breeding program. Its current programming will undergo a review, and where necessary, will be transitioned to ensure crop innovations support Alberta’s farmers’ needs now and into the future.

The interim board, made up of representatives from government and industry, will lead WCI and the tran-

sition process. The new model will include integrated funding that connects government, industry, and postsecondary institutions.

“Considering my farm’s proximity and history with FCDC, I’m happy to help guide Western Crop Innovations to conduct research and development leading to commercialization of superior crop varieties that will benefit Alberta and western Canadian agriculture sectors.” Jason Lenz, chair, Western Crop Innovations

Interim board members:

• Jason Lenz, chair

• D’Arcy Hilgartner, vice-chair, Results Driven Agriculture Research

• Fred Lozeman, former finance chair, Alberta Beef Producers

• John Conrad, assistant deputy minister, Agriculture and Irrigation

Funding

• The anticipated cost of WCI’s first year is $3.5 million.

• Government will be contributing $3.2 million, with industry support tobe determined.
