JOHN DEERE ANNOUNCES NEW TRACTOR MODELS

John Deere has announced its new lineup of high-horsepower four-track tractors, including a 830 horsepower option.

As weather patterns shift, the labour pool shrinks and input costs rise, the ability to prepare the field, plant and harvest faster, and at a lower cost per acre, is more critical. The 2025 lineup of high-horsepower four-track tractors features three new models with new engine and hydraulic options, technology packages, cab updates and more.

“These aren’t just incremental improvements,” said Michael Porter, go-to-market manager for the John Deere tractor line. “These are from-the-ground-up redesign.

“We have three new models and a host of new features, all newly designed to return real benefits in terms of operating speeds, in-field efficiency and futureproofing the farm.”

The lineup includes three high-horsepower four-track models: the 9RX 710, the 9RX 770 and the 9RX 830.

AUTONOMOUS-READY OPTION

To help farmers prepare equipment and farms for autonomous operation, wheeled and four-track MY25 8 Series and 9 Series tractors will offer an autonomous-ready option so they can quickly and easily make the switch to fully autonomous operation when it’s right for their own farm.

“The autonomous-ready package offers all the hardware, software and safety features that we know today will be required for autonomous operation in the future,” Porter said.

It will include rear implement ethernet, new visibility features, a back-up alarm, a 330-amp alternator, a brake controller and valve, and all the necessary connectors, controllers and harnesses.

The only additional item a farmer will need to complete autonomous operations will be the perception system, consisting of cameras and vision processing units.

“The move to autonomous operations should be deliberate and well-planned,” Porter said. “But when it’s time to make the switch, we want our customers to be ready to convert quickly and easily.”

NEW ENGINES AND HYDRAULIC POWER OPTIONS

The three 9RX models will be powered by the JD18 engine from John Deere Power Systems. This Final Tier 4/Stage V-compliant 18-litre engine meets emissions requirements using exhaust-gas recirculation technology, eliminating the need for diesel exhaust fluid (DEF), and potentially saving farmers the cost of hundreds of gallons of DEF per season.

In combination with the new engine, an optional 168-GPM triple-pump hydraulic system gives farmers the confidence to pull wider and heavier airseeding trains while maintaining tractor and fan speed.

“With up to 830 horsepower, 636 L/min of hydraulic flow and up to 84,000 lb. (38,000 kg) of ballast, the new 9RX models are tailor-made for big jobs and big acreage and will help farmers prep the field and plant faster, while reducing overall operating costs,” Porter said.

COMMANDVIEW 4 PLUS CAB UPGRADES

The CommandView 4 Plus cab offers a 15 per cent increase in floor space and a 20 per cent improvement in visibility from the right-hand side, increasing storage capacity and comfort. Operators are protected from bumps, ruts and noise by the new cab suspension with three degrees of motion and an isolated subframe.

“Driving a tractor for 10-plus hours per day can put a strain on even the most experienced operators,” Porter said. “With the additional floor space and enhanced visibility, operators can work more comfortably, have more room for food or drink storage, and have a clearer view.”

ADVANCED TECHNOLOGY PACKAGE

The 9RX models offer high levels of standard technology features, including the G5Plus CommandCenter Display and Integrated StarFire 7500 receiver. An optional G5 Advanced technology package with SF-RTK offers top precision capabilities.

“The combination of the G5Plus display and the optional G5 Advanced technology package gives farmers access to virtually the entire portfolio of intelligence and productivity features,” Porter said.

“This includes AutoTrac Turn Automation, AutoTrac Implement Guidance, AutoPath planning and more. With the John Deere Operations Center and JDLink connectivity, you have a total technology package that allows access to field and machine data anytime, anywhere.

“For small grain farmers, the higher engine and hydraulic power mean they can pull fully loaded air seeders over virtually any type of terrain without slowing down. And regardless of what crops are planted, the machine will be ready for autonomous operations when the time comes to implement it on the farm.”

The MY25 high-horsepower 9RX models will be available for order starting mid-March. Additional model-year updates are available for 7 and 8 Series tractors.

TAX CREDIT SPROUTS MORE LITTLE POTATO PRODUCTS

Alberta produced more potatoes in 2023 than any other province. On an annual basis, potato production contributes more than $2 billion to the provincial economy.

Now The Little Potato Company is building a new $39.5-million project in Nisku to double its processing capacity and produce more packaged potatoes with seasonings that can be roasted, microwaved or grilled.

“Our government developed Alberta’s Agri-Processing Investment Tax Credit program with corporations like The Little Potato Company in mind,” said Alberta Agriculture minister RJ Sigurdson, in a news release.

“The program is providing the right conditions for food and ag processors to invest in our province, grow their business and create more jobs for Albertans. Through incentives like this tax credit, we’re building on Alberta’s competitive advantages and continuing to drive economic growth and diversification.”

To be considered for the tax credit program, corporations must invest at least $10 million in a project to build or expand a value-added agri-processing facility in Alberta.

The program offers a 12 per cent non-refundable tax credit for eligible capital expenditures. The province has given conditional approval for a tax credit to The Little Potato Company estimated at $1.3 million.

The Little Potato Company employs 224 Albertans at its current site. The 240,000-square-foot facility in Nisku will be able to process about 125 million pounds of potatoes, up from 65 million lb. at the former Edmonton location.

“We are honoured and grateful for this generous tax credit from the Government of Alberta. The investment elevates our efforts to grow, pack and bring more convenient, nourishing and flavourful Little Potatoes to busy families,” said company cofounder Angela Santiago.

The Little Potato Company will export up to 70 per cent of processed products to the United States.

Alberta potato growers planted 80,100 acres in 2023, up from 73,080 acres in 2022.

GROWERS INVEST MORE THAN $3.7 MILLION FOR CANOLA PRIORITIES

The three Prairie provincial canola grower associations have selected 13 new canola research projects to receive funding under the Canola Agronomic Research Program (CARP) in 2024.

This investment includes more than $2.1 million from Alberta Canola, SaskCanola and Manitoba Canola Growers, and more than $1.6 million from the Western Grains Research Foundation (WGRF), bringing the total investment to more than $3.7 million.

The research program supports canola agronomic research focused on increasing yield and profitability, reducing production risk and enhancing sustainability. The funded projects often provide new strategies for managing top pests and diseases, improving nutrient management and generating more resilient canola.

Grower associations partner with the WGRF, enabling greater innovation and discovery.

“There is huge value in pooling levy dollars to invest in research projects that address canola agronomic issues that farmers in all three provinces face,” says Keith Fournier, SaskCanola chair.

“WGRF’s investment is an added bonus to the funding equation, as it allows levy dollars to stretch further for more important research to occur.”

“WGRF is proud to partner with the prairie canola grower associations in supporting critical research initiatives through CARP,” says board chair Laura Reiter.

“Together, we are making investments in canola research that will benefit farmers by giving them the knowledge and tools needed for success in the field.”

The 2024 projects awarded funding are focused on:

NEW DISCOVERY MAY BRING BETTER HOG VACCINES

Along-term, international collaboration between researchers at the University of Manitoba and the Leiden University Medical Centre in the Netherlands has uncovered vital information about porcine reproductive and respiratory syndrome virus (PRRSV).

This pathogen causes severe disease in pigs, leading to significant economic losses for pork producers across the globe.

“This disease in pigs is important worldwide and is economically fairly significant,” says Marjolein Kikkert, associate professor of virology at Leiden University Medical Centre. “The aim of the project was to improve vaccines for this disease, and it turned out that it was very difficult.”

It’s estimated that PRRS costs the Canadian pork industry $130 million annually.

Kikkert and collaborator Brian Mark, science dean at the University of Manitoba, looked at targeting a type of protein called a protease. PRRSV uses these proteins to suppress a host’s immune system, causing severe illness. By changing the structure, researchers can design altered viruses upon which to base new vaccines.

With the help of the Canadian Light Source at the University of Saskatchewan, Mark and

Kikkert were able to visualize the unique structure of the PRRSV protease. What they learned in their study is valuable for developing new vaccines against PRRSV and also helps inform development of vaccines against emerging human viruses.

The team has conducted similar research on coronaviruses — which also use proteases to suppress human and animal immune systems — and has successfully designed new vaccines.

“The trick and hypothesis we had for improving the PRRSV vaccine didn’t quite work,” says Kikkert. “However, we did learn a lot about how these viruses work. And it may certainly be a basis for further work into possibilities for improving vaccines against these viruses and coronaviruses.”

The team’s findings also unlock new doors to understanding how viruses like PRRSV use proteins to replicate.

“The Canadian Light Source provided the technology we needed to determine the structures of these proteases, and this knowledge has provided tremendous insight into the biochemistry of these viruses, which is the cornerstone of modern vaccine development,” says Mark.

Background:

Wheatisoneofthemostimportant staple foodcrops formorethan athirdof theglobalpopulation. Improvementsinwheat productionarecrucial,requiring notjustincreased grainyield to satisfytheneedsofan expandingpopulation, butalsoadvancementsin grainquality, specifically regardingprotein content (Shewry,2007). Thedifficultyliesinthe complextaskofsimultaneouslyboosting both grainyieldandproteincontent,giventheirnegativecorrelation(Bogardet al.,2010). Consequently,thispresentsa criticalscientificchallengeinintensive wheatproduction.

Nitrogenisoneoftheimportant factorsthataffectingtheyieldandqualityof wheat.Insufficientnitrogen fertilizerleadstodecreasedwheatyieldandquality, while excessiveapplicationreducesnitrogenuseefficienc yinwheat, causing environmentalpollution.Giventhesignificanteffect ofnitrogen fertilizerin improvingwheatyield,thecurrentfocusin researchisondeterminingsource and rate ofnitrogen fertilizer forimprovedyieldandqualitysimultaneously. Wheatgrainyieldandprotein contentare affectedbyvariousmanagement practices,suchasnitrogen fertilizermanagement, irrigation,andtillagepractice amongwhichthenitrogen fertilizerhasthestrongesteffect onwheat grain yieldandprotein content(Zebarthetal.,2007).

Thegrainfillingperiodiscriticalfortheformationofwheatgrain weight; therefore,identifyingthephysiologicalmechanismsofgrainfillingisdesirable forincreasingwheatgrainyield.Normalureaisthemostusednitrogen fertilizer inwheat production,however, duetothe rapiddissolvingnatureofnormal urea, asingleapplicationmayleadtopremature senescence ofwheat leaves by affectingsoil Navailabilityatlategrowthstage,whichlimitsphotosynthetic efficienc yandtheaccumulationofassimilate afteranthesis(Maetal.,2021).

Althoughthesplitapplicationofnormalureacanimprovethe fertilizernutrient supplywiththecropdemands, thesplitapplicationhaspracticaldifficulty and laborintensive. Slowreleasingnitrogenfertilizerwithphysical coatingensures thatthe Nreleaseoccurs at acontrolledrateandprovideamoresustained nutrient supply to theplants.Slowreleasingnitrogenfertilizerisappliedentirely as abase fertilizer,whichsaveslabor cost comparedwiththesplitapplicationof normalurea to improvethesynchronizationofsoil Nsupply.

In this research, we exploredtheimpactofthreenitrogen fertilizersources and varyingapplication ratesonboththeyieldandprotein contentofwheat. Thenitrogensourcesconsidered were Urea,ESN,and UAN. Theobjective of thisstudyis to identifythebest Nfertilizerstypeand ratecombinations for maximizingyieldandprotein contentofwheat.

MaterialandMethods:

Theexperiments were conducted at twositeseach year for3 years(2019, 2020,and2021)intheSARDA Ag Researchmandateareatotaling 6siteyearsof data were collectedduringthisstudy.The experimentallocations were Smoky River,GreenviewandBigLakes.Inthe2020season,duetotheimpactofCOVID, weremainedin twositesinSmoky River. Theexperiments were conducted in arandomizedcompleteblockdesignwith 4replicates. Allplotsreceived recommendednutrientamounts,exceptN treatmentrates.Fertilizer rateswas basedon100bu/actargetwheatyield.UreaandESNwasappliedatseeding time. Topdressingof UANwas at headingstage.The experimentalplantin thisstudy washardredspringwheatvariety“AC Stettler ”. “ACStettler ”hadthe highestnumberofacresgrownintheareaduringthoseyear.

Grainyieldandproteincontent data were measured.Datawereanalyzedusing the Rsoftwarepackage,version4.2.0(R core team,2022)afterfitting alinearmixed modelusing “lmer ”functionfromthe “lmerTest” package,wheretreatmentswere usedas afixedeffect and replicationas arandomeffectfactor. Means were separated bythe TukeyHSDposthoc test at P<0.05usingthe “emmeans”package.Pearson correlationsamongthetraits were calculatedusingthe “cor.test” function.

Resultsand Discussion:

Theweatherdata collectedfrom AlbertaClimateInformation Service, GovernmentofAlberta(www.agric.gov.ab.ca), forthenearby meteorologicalstations of correspondingsitesshowedthatthe year2021 wasthedrierandhotterthanall other yearswhich wasnotfavorable forcropproduction.

Analysisof varianceshowedthatforboth grainyield(P<0.001)andprotein content(P<0.001)therewassignificantinteractionbetweentreatmentandsite-year thereforethe result waspresentedseparately forallsite-years.

Yield: In the year2019,therewassignificantlyhigheryieldinalltreatmentsthan checkinbothlocations (Table1).Similarly,inthe year2020Smoky River1site had significantlyhigheryieldinallthetreatmentsthanthecheckbutinSmokyRiver2 sitetherewashigheryieldonly at twotreatments[Urea(100%N)andUrea(100%N) +UAN(30%N)]thanthecheck .Likewise,inthe year2021therewasnosignificant differencebetweenthetreatments.Thenon-significantvariationin year2021may bebecauseofhotteranddrier growingseason resultinginunavailabilityofnitrogen appliedcausingloweryield.

Protein: In the year2019, at bothsitessignificantlyhighestprotein contentwasobser vedatUrea(50%N)+ESN(50%N)+UAN(30%N) followedby Urea(100%N)+UAN(30%N)treatment. Similarly,inthe year2020SmokyRiver1site hadsignificantlyhigherprotein contentinallthetreatmentsthanthecheckwith highestbeingUrea(50%N)+ESN(50%N)+UAN(30%N)andUrea(130%N)treatment WhileSmokyRiver2siteshowednon-significantvariationintheproteincontent amongthetreatmentsinthe year2020.Likewise,year2021showednon-significant variationintheproteincontent amongthetreatments.

The year2021showedlowestyieldandhighestprotein contentand furthermore, correlationstudysuggestedthatseedyieldissignificantlynegatively correlatedwithprotein content(r=-0.67,P<0.001).ThetreatmentUrea(50%N) +ESN(50%N)+UAN(30%N)showedhighestproteincontent andhigheryield. The combinationofUreawithESNasbasalapplication followedbyUAN top- dressing gave theoptimum resultsuggesting combinationofureawith UANandESNfertilizer isdesirable forhigheryieldandhigherprotein contentinwheatproduction

Thisstudy concludedthatincreasing rate ofUreaaloneisnoteffectiveway to increasewheatyieldandquality. Furthermore, thisstudy foundthatthe combination ofUreawith UANandESN fertilizer ratherthanjustincreasingtheUreaapplication doseisaneffective agronomicmanagementstrategy to improvegrainyieldand

JOHN DEERE EXPANDS WINDROWER SERIES LINEUP

OLATHE, Kansas —

John Deere has expanded its windrower series with the W260M model, designed for more productivity and efficiency.

Offering an additional higher horsepower model at the M specification level, operators can cut a denser crop more efficiently. Additionally, the W260M pairs with the new mounted-merger option, allowing operators to combine up to 48 feet into one windrow, potentially reducing the number of passes.

The mounted-merger also is compatible with existing windrower models W235M, W235R and W260R The set eliminates the need for an additional field pass, saving growers time and money.

“Dairy feed producers are looking for ways to improve profitability that doesn’t increase labour hours. The new W260M and mounted-merger solution set helps accomplish just that,” said Kaylene Ballesteros, John Deere hay and forage go-tomarket manager.

“Our customers need to do more with less to combat rising costs within the industry. A solution that offers time savings with less passes allows them more time and money to focus on other areas of their operation.”

The John Deere windrower portfolio also offers technology such as AutoTrac guidance, TouchSet that allows operators to make adjustments to windrow shape and conditioning, as well as mowing

documentation in John Deere Operations Center for easy job tracking.

The W260M and merger option will be available at John Deere dealerships this fall.

Wheat research across the country will receive crucial funding through the new Canadian National Wheat Cluster, worth more than $20 million over five years.

Administered by the Canadian Wheat Research Coalition (CWRC), the wheat cluster will fund research projects that advance wheat genetics, agronomy and sustainability.

“Wheat is a vital crop in the rotations of grain farmers across the country,” said Jake Leguee, CWRC chair, who farms near Fillmore, Sask.

OPTIMISM SEEN IN THE LAMB MARKET

Alberta’s sheep and lamb sector faces smaller inventories, fewer breeding and replacement animals and lower lamb crop for 2024, says Ann Boyda, provincial livestock market analyst with the Alberta government.

“However, optimism exists for continued easing of production costs and stronger lamb prices. The industry still faces challenges due to the declining flock numbers and consumer concerns of high food prices, but demand remains stable.”

According to Statistics Canada’s total sheep inventories released Feb. 23, Canadian inventories of sheep and lambs as of Jan. 1 were down 2.2 per cent compared to Jan. 1, 2023, to 828,300 head.

The sheep breeding herd declined 2.3 per cent to 599,300 head, with ewes down 2.4 per cent, rams down 0.84 per cent and replacement lambs down three per cent. Market lambs and lambs under one year declined two percent since January 1, 2023.

StatCan reported Alberta total sheep and lambs on-farm of 170,100 head, 1.96 per cent lower than last Jan. 1. The greatest decline of 2.71 per cent was reported for replacement lambs. The lamb crop (lambs under one year) was down 2.22 per cent. Ewe and ram inventories were down 1.8 and 1.9 per cent, respectively, for the same period.

Alberta is now the second largest sheep and lamb producing province, just surpassing Quebec by 1,700 head on-farm as of Jan. 1. Ontario holds the top position with 261,400 head. Except for Nova Scotia and New Brunswick, all provinces reported a decline in inventory over the last year. StatCan attributes this to lower prices and increased feed costs.

SLAUGHTER

Slaughter volume in 2023 at federally inspected facilities for Western Canada, including Ontario, is reported at 86,692 head, a 0.2 per cent increase over 2022 following three years of consecutive decreases in slaughter numbers.

The Western Canada slaughter volume represents 51 per cent of total slaughter in federally inspected establishments. Slaughter volume through 2023 followed the typical seasonal trend associated with holidays and special religious events.

PRICES

Prices for market lamb at select Alberta auctions ranged between $209.29 and $276.14 per hundredweight year-to-date (Feb. 23). These prices were on average 20-26 per cent higher than the same period in 2023.

Average prices in 2023 were 8.2-12.5 per cent lower than the five-year average of $260.92 per cwt. high and $209.01 per cwt. low.

The cash price of feeder lamb at select Alberta auctions exhibited comparable seasonal patterns; however, the average low and high range of $276.29 and $358 per cwt. year-to-date (Feb. 23) were 3.5 per cent lower and 3.4 per cent higher than the low and high prices for the same period in 2023.

The average low price for 2023 of $199.29 per cwt. and high range of $263.33 per cwt. were 39 and 23 per cent higher than the five-year averages, respectively.

Year-to-date (Feb. 16) liveweight equivalent lamb prices were estimated at $247.06 per cwt., an increase of 9.2 per cent over same period last year. The average price for 2023 was estimated at $249.60 per cwt., which also represented a nine per cent increase over the five-year average price.

Sheep supply and disposition data from StatCan estimates Alberta interprovincial export of sheep and lamb for 2023 of 15,400 head, up 7.7 per cent over 2022. Interprovincial imports for 2023 were estimated to be 12,200 head, up 17.3 per cent from 2022. International imports of 6,900 head were reported for the first half of 2023, with no international imports in the second half of 2023.

According to Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada, Canada imported nearly 22,221 tonnes of lamb and 4,277 tonnes of mutton in 2023. Data from the Agri-Food Trade On-line indicates that Alberta imported 6,949 sheep in 2023, down by 11,241 head from 2022, which had the highest number of imports in the last 10 years. Alberta also imported three tonnes of sheep lamb and mutton cuts in 2023.

“As producers watch the drought monitor, feed costs and market prices, there may still be room for optimism in the first half of this year,” says Boyda.

“The U.S. market could hold some promise but competition from Australia and New Zealand is stiff, especially considering the slower Asian economies. The expectation is that lower U.S. production in the first half of 2024 would see lamb prices recover.

“March should see an inventory buildup for the Easter holiday. In addition, Ramadan celebrations should influence demand. Eid al-Fitr (Festival of Fast-breaking) and Passover in April usually feature lamb products.”

FERTILIZER PRICE TIED TO GLOBAL TRADE

Fertilizers are essential inputs for agricultural production, says Azam Nikzad, market analyst/coordinating researcher with the Alberta government.

“In Alberta, fertilizer and lime accounted for approximately $2.5 billion of total farm operating expenses in 2022. Domestic demand for fertilizer is tied to seeded area and farm income, which is influenced by global crop prices.”

The fertilizer industry is global. The total market was valued at US$202 billion in 2023, with nitrogen fertilizers the most traded type, followed by phosphate and potash.

Alberta is part of and contributes to the global fertilizer market. It is a large producer of nitrogen due to the availability of natural gas in the region, which is a key input. Alberta is also the largest sulfur producer in Canada. Sulfur is a byproduct of natural gas and oil refining.

“Alberta exports nitrogen and sulfur-based fertilizers, including anhydrous ammonia, urea, ammonium sulphate and ammonium nitrate,” says Nikzad.

“The combined volume of these four fertilizers reached above 1.8 million tonnes in 2023 and accounted for 98.8 per cent of total fertilizer export volume from the province. In the last decade, ammonium sulphate exports demonstrated a consistent increase, while the remaining fertilizer exhibited fluctuations with ups and downs in their export volumes.”

Alberta exported 22.1 per cent of its total anhydrous ammonia production in 2022. This positioned Canada as the fifth largest exporter of ammonia in the world. Additionally, urea exports were 11.1 per cent of Alberta’s total urea production in the same year. The United States is the major export destination for Alberta’s fertilizers.

“Alberta does not make all the different types and formulations of fertilizer products needed by farmers,” says Nikzad. “The province gets potash from Saskatchewan and relies on imported phosphate, primarily from the United States and Morocco.

“Alberta imports Monoammonium Phosphate (MAP) + Diammonium Phosphate (DAP), as well as compound fertilizers that contain nitrogen and phosphorus.”

The import volume of these fertilizers amounted to 340,833 tonnes, which represented 82.5 per cent of the total import volume in 2023. MAP + DAP alone accounted for 70.7 per cent of overall import volume during the same period.

“The fertilizer market is tied to global supply and demand dynamics, while political and geopolitical factors have added to the complexity of the situation in recent years,” says Nikzad.

“At the same time, strong crop prices boosted fertilizer demand that created a gap between global demand and supply. Global supplies currently continue to face a number of challenges, with Europe reducing nitrogen fertilizer production due to high natural gas prices and China restricting exports to secure supply and lower domestic prices.”

A similar scenario is unfolding for phosphate, where a global shortage is exacerbated by geopolitical tensions, particularly the Russia-Ukraine war and conflict in the Middle East. China is a major contributor to global phosphate fertilizer supply and has implemented export restrictions on this product.

Closer to home, the shutdown of a phosphate facility in Redwater also has potential to impact domestic supply. The plant shifted focus from phosphate production to ammonium sulphate. The transition has consequences for phosphate production and will lead to increased imports of phosphate fertilizer from the United States or overseas.

“Western Canada has the capacity to produce most of the fertilizers demanded by farms, with the exception of phosphorus-based products, where we rely on imports,” explains Nikzad.

“This is not to suggest there will never be a supply disruption or localized shortage. Transportation and other logistical factors can impact product availability and affect market prices. As well, demand for specialized fertilizers is increasing and it can sometimes outpace production capacity.”

Canadian cattle, hog and sheep inventories were down as of Jan. 1 compared with the same date one year earlier.

The Canadian cattle herd fell to the lowest level since Jan. 1, 1989. Record average producer prices of Canadian cattle and calves, drought conditions and tight feed supply continued to put downward pressure on the cattle sector, and producers responded by sending breeding stock to feedlots.

Canadian hog inventories fell for the second consecutive year on Jan. 1, hindered by rising feed costs, labour shortages, reduced processing capacity and international market issues, especially in Eastern Canada.

Canadian sheep inventories declined for the first time since Jan. 1, 2020. Average producer prices of slaughter lambs have weakened since strong prices in 2021 and early 2022. Lower prices and increased feed costs contributed to the inventory decline.

CATTLE AND CALVES

Canadian farmers held 11.1 million cattle and calves on their farms on Jan. 1, down 2.1 per cent from the same date the previous year. It is the smallest cattle herd size since Jan. 1, 1989. However, in 2022, average warm carcass weights of cattle increased 18 per cent compared with 1999, helping offset any decline in beef production over that period.

Canadian cattle producers retained less breeding stock, with year-over-year decreases observed in all breeding stock categories. Producers held fewer feeder heifers (-0.7 per cent), steers (-0.2 per cent) and calves (-3 per cent) compared with Jan. 1, 2023.

From July to December 2023, the total disposition of cattle and calves was up 0.9 per cent compared with July to December 2022, while total supply was down 1.5 per cent. From July to December 2023, international imports of cattle and calves declined 25.7 per cent to 153,400 head, and international exports of cattle and calves increased 14 per cent to 389,200 head.

HOGS

Canadian hog producers reported 13.8 million hogs on their farms on Jan. 1, down one per cent from the same date one year earlier. Quebec’s hog inventories declined 4.8 per cent amid closure of a Quebec pork plant and herd-reducing program payments, while Manitoba’s inventories increased 2.4 per cent year over year.

Hog producers reported 1.2 million sows and gilts (-2.2 per cent), and the number of boars decreased by 3.1 per cent year over year to 15,500 head.

From July to December 2023, total hog slaughter increased one per cent to 10.9 million head, and international exports of live hogs increased 7.4 per cent to 3.4 million head during the same period.

The pig crop, the number of live piglets after weaning, rose to 14.9 million from July to December 2023, a two per cent increase compared with July to December 2022.

SHEEP AND LAMBS

Canadian inventories of sheep and lambs were down 2.2 per cent year over year to 828,300 head.

The sheep breeding herd declined 2.3 per cent year over year to 599,300 head, as inventories of ewes (-2.4 per cent), rams (-0.8 per cent) and replacement lambs (-2 per cent) decreased. Inventories of market lambs declined two per cent year over year to 229,000 head.

For the second half of 2023 (July to December), sheep and lamb slaughter decreased 1.2 per cent year over year to 382,600 head.

For the July to December 2023 period, international exports of live sheep and lambs decreased 38 per cent year over year, down to 8,000 head. International imports of live sheep dropped to zero.

CCA ANNOUNCES MENTORSHIP PAIRS

Alberta Beef Producers

Canadian Cattle Young Leaders has announced the mentors who will invest their expertise and time to help the next generation in the Canadian beef industry.

Each year, the Canadian Cattle Young Leaders Program selects 16 program participants ages 18-35

from across the country and offers industry networking, travel and skill-building opportunities.

There is an array of mentorship focus areas this year, including sustainable grazing practices, business planning, industry leadership, succession planning, livestock handling and welfare and feedlot production.

“Now, more than ever, there is a growing need to invest and support the youth of our industry to ensure a successful future,” said Nathan Phinney, president of the Canadian Cattle Association.

The formal portion of these mentorships began in November 2023 and will conclude at the end of July. Each participant is granted a $2,000 budget through the generosity of program sponsors to fund various learning opportunities, such as travel to see their mentors and attending industry events.

Applications for the 2024-25 program year are available until March 31.

AFAC ANNOUNCES IMMEDIATE CLOSURE

The Alberta Farm Animal Care Association (AFAC) announced its immediate closure March 1 due to lack of finances.

The organization was started in 1993 by Alberta livestock producers. Over the past 30 years, it developed into the collective voice of the livestock industry on matters of livestock welfare and helped the industry work together to advance and promote responsible livestock care.

AFAC’s vision was to ensure farm animals in Alberta are respected, well cared for and experience a high state of welfare through collaboration with and support of members. Its mission was to promote best practices in care and handling, by working collaboratively toward continual improvement in responsible livestock care, and engaging the public to build trust through transparency.

AFAC initiated the Livestock Emergency Trailers system, developed together with Alberta counties. It also developed the ALERT line and many informational programs and resources, including most recently Urban Hens and the Alberta BEE program.

AFAC has been hit hard in recent months with lack of government funding. Though the board heard from members and supporters that AFAC and the ALERT Line were important to Alberta’s livestock welfare and organizations, numerous funding sources were investigated and exhausted.

Work is underway to transition current activities and resources to other partners, including the ALERT Line.

The AFAC board would like to acknowledge the work of the organization to support farmed animal health and welfare in Alberta over the years, and to express gratitude to staff, contractors, members and supporters for their engagement and participation.
