UBC researchers identify unique water storage system that protects balsam poplar trees from drought

alsam poplars are a mediumsized deciduous tree commonly planted as a wind shelter or for alley cropping, to create lanes for growing agricultural crops. Because of their economic value for these applications — and considering warmer, drier conditions brought on by climate change — plant breeders are interested in coming up with new hybrid types that are even more resistant to drought. Researchers from the University of British Columbia recently used the Canadian Light Source at the University of Saskatchewan to look inside two types of balsam poplar saplings, to learn more about how their water transport system is affected by lack of moisture in soil. Under normal conditions, water is transported upwards from the roots of a tree to its leaves through a continuous column of water. However, in drought conditions, pockets of air form in that column — like an embolism that develops in the blood vessel of a human — blocking the transport of water and nutrients to the leaves. “What other researchers have found is that these drought-induced embolisms are one of the main causes for tree mortality that we are observing globally under dry conditions,” says Thorsten Knipfer, an assistant professor of plant physiology in UBC’s Faculty of Land and Food Systems, and lead researcher on this new study. Xylem is the tissue in plants responsible for transporting water from the roots to the stem and leaves. Using X-ray computed tomography, the UBC team discovered that balsam poplars use their xylem fibres to store water then subsequently release it into the xylem’s

vessels, the pipe-like cells that house its hydraulic column; this mechanism reduces the risk of embolism forming there. “So internally stored water is utilized that makes the plant less susceptible to air embolisms, which was cool to see,” says Knipfer. “This is the first time that somebody obtained visual evidence of this phenomenon in an intact plant (with X-ray CT).” Before now, he says, researchers thought the primary function of xylem fibres was to provide mechanical support to the tree. The BMIT beamline enabled Knipfer and colleagues to peer inside an intact plant. In previous studies, researchers typically examined a section of plant material that has been cut from the main body of the plant, exposing the hydraulic column to air and causing embolisms to form. Their findings, says Knipfer, could help plant breeders develop new hybrid varieties of poplars that blend the drought-resistant capabilities of the poplars they studied with the desirable fast-growing capabilities of another genotype. “We know from the literature that there are other types of woody species where water is not stored in fibres, which is somewhat surprising because fibres make up the largest volume of the entire xylem in the stem,” says Knipfer. “You’d think that this volume would have to be used by the tree in some way — that it’s not just this empty compartment. Showing in a balsam poplar that it serves as a compartment for water storage is a very significant finding.” Reprinted with permission of author Greg Basky of Canadian Light Source Inc., University of Saskatchewan, 2024.

Pen of heifers. Photo credit: Barry Yaremcio It is very common for producers to sell open cows after pregnancy checking. Some are old cows, and they need to be culled, and others are first or second calf cows. Is there value in keeping these animals? First calf heifers have several challenges at calving as two years of age. Permanent teeth are coming in, which can reduce the ability of an animal to eat. These young animals should be at 85% of mature body weight at first calving. They need to produce milk and prepare for breeding season, but also need to continue to grow and be at mature body size by the time the second calf is delivered. Many things need to be considered if keeping open cows in your herd: ·

Is the animal from a blood line that is highly productive?

·

How much winter feed and pasture are available to keep the open animals?

·

What is the cost of keeping an animal for a year without producing a calf?

Economics plays a major role in the decision. Selling an open cow generates immediate cash flow. To keep long term cash flow constant, these animals need to be replaced. It takes two years for a heifer to deliver their first calf. According to the Manitoba Beef Cost Guide (2023), the cost to raise a replacement heifer is $3,500. To keep a young or mature cow on farm for a year, the cost is $1,600. To maintain cow herd numbers constant, another option is to purchase bred heifers. Prices vary from location to location. Purchasing bred heifers needs to make economic sense for the operation. The decision to keep or sell open younger cows depends on the priorities and objectives of the operation. He talked to his Boys and came back and said he would take 2 if I would advertize his 2010 DF22 for him . We put a price on it and within a month it sold for 87% of what he paid for it. SUPPORTING THE CARNIVORES AND COMMUNITIES PROGRAM Alberta’s government is supporting farmers, ranchers and landowners by providing five years of funding to help prevent human-wildlife conflicts in the Waterton Biosphere Reserve Agri-News, January 8, 2024

S

outhwestern Alberta residents have expressed concern about growing grizzly bear, black bear and wolf and cougar populations, the increasing frequency of conflicts with large carnivores and the impacts of large carnivores on local livelihoods and community safety. The Waterton Biosphere Reserve Association (WBRA) has worked successfully to promote peaceful coexistence between humans and wildlife in the Waterton Biosphere Region through its Carnivores and Communities Program (CACP). Alberta’s government is proud to continue supporting this program by investing $700,000 over five years, with a $160,000 contribution in 2023-24 and $135,000 annually for the subsequent four years. “Co-existing with wildlife, including large carnivores, is an everyday part of living and working in rural Alberta. The Carnivores and Communities Program is making a difference for farmers, ranchers and landowners in the Waterton Biosphere Region and this investment will help protect humans, wild-

life and infrastructure.” Todd Loewen, minister of forestry and parks. The CACP takes a community-based approach, working with Albertans living in the area to reduce primary agriculture attractants by managing dead livestock and bee yards, and securing facilities for grain, feed and garbage while ensuring both people and carnivores have a place on the land. Initiatives under the CACP include the Deadstock Removal Program, on-farm carcass composting, electric fence installation, wildlife attractant reduction and bear safety training for ranch families. The CACP is especially helpful to producers because it equips them with the right predation management tools to reduce conflict with large carnivores, which lowers the economic impact of these predators. “Sharing the landscape with large carnivores can be challenging and requires many human and infrastructure resources. We appreciate the Alberta government’s long-standing support for the Carnivores and Communities Program and this new funding will enable us to continue helping

our community coexist with the wildlife around us.” Jeff Bectell, CACP coordinator, WBRA. Alberta’s government has supported the CACP since 2009 through a series of single and multi-year grants. The last three-year grant agreement ended on March 31. The government will continue to support initiatives that reduce the risk of human-wildlife conflict and promote safe outdoor environments.

SHORTY RYCROFT From Teepee Creek Terror, by Margaret (Fraser) Thibault Editor, 1979, D.W.Friesen & Sons Ltd. Reprinted with permission

E

ric Rycroft, who acted as both clown and pickup man in the arena (and sometimes bronc rider, too) recollected memories of the early stampedes. Eric, who came to his first picnic in 1927, said, “I remember picking up down at McKenzies for whatever there was down there, but Claude Stubley and his brother-in-law Steve McNeely did the real picking up at Teepee Creek later. I hazed for them and took over later on Silverstreak. Now my boys, Tommy and Dennis, have taken over from me. “Claude Stubley of Ft. St. John had a horse named Mickey that would lean right up against the chute gate and keep the horse in until it was time to get out. “Ken Grant and Jack McKenzie were the first announcers. They didn’t have a microphone or anything — just a birch bark horn. “My horse, Silverstreak, did tricks when the crowd got slack — then she’d turn around and kick me for it. She did tricks for years there just to keep things going. I was training a steer at one time, but I came home from town one day and there he was, hung up for beef. “In 1941, when I was the clown, Elbert Debolt pushed me off the diving board into the dam. I took the pillow out of my suit and let it float to the top and then hid under the diving board. They thought for sure I had drowned and Elbert jumped in to save me.”

Eric used to clown around at some of the other local rodeos too. Millar Patterson, of the Patterson Brothers’ show at Hythe, said, “Eric Rycroft was a good little clown. He was the best clown we ever had at our rodeo in Hythe.” “I remember one of the early stampede meetings,” laughed Eric. “Mrs. King couldn’t hear very well and she got mixed up and mistook what was being said. When they nominated a booth committee, she thought they said booze committee and stated that she would have nothing to do with liquor. “At one of our stampedes in those early days we had a professional rodeo announcer — I think his name was Alexander — and he made the statement, ‘If this is what the west is made of, then it’s made of good stuff.” “Here we were with all our old lumber and boards and a two-inch nail where we should have had a four inch. It was sure good stuff all right,” chuckled Eric. “We were just praying it would hold together until he left and not fall apart when he leaned on it to make his speech,” added Gordon Rycroft. “Jack Walker used to have a chuckwagon outfit and the first time he brought his outfit onto the track they went the wrong way round and ran the whole race backwards,” said Eric. Once when Eric was the clown over at High Prai-

Claude Stubbley — one of the first pick-up men at the first stampedes. Claude later played bass guitar and was M.C. for a western band known as Alf and his Ramblers. rie, he was up on top of a truck cab dancing and acting up. When he jumped down off the cab, the Indians attacked him and of course, because everybody thinks a clown can’t get hurt, they really went after him. Eric darned near got killed. One year Reta went looking for Eric and found him sitting on the ground over by a tent with a lady and her baby in a carriage. In the state he was in he thought it was Reta and baby Geneva.

LINAMAR ACQUIRES SEEDING EXPERT BOURGAULT INDUSTRIES, SIGNIFICANTLY BOLSTERING ITS AGRICULTURE BUSINESS Linamar, owner of MacDon and Salford, set to acquire Bourgault Industries for $640 million

D

ecember 20, 2023 (GUELPH) – Linamar Corporation (TSX: LNR) today announced that it has reached an agreement to acquire Bourgault Industries Ltd. of St. Brieux, Sask., further enhancing its industrial segment’s diversified offerings and advancing its position as a leading short-line agriculture equipment manufacturer. Bourgault is a worldclass agriculture equipment manufacturer regarded as a market and technology leader in broad acre seeding. Linamar’s existing agricultural brands include harvesting specialist MacDon, and tillage and crop nutrition expert Salford. Bourgault is highly complimentary to these existing divisions and enables Linamar to increase its market position as it now possesses a full lineup of products in the broader crop production cycle, from field preparation, to seeding, crop nutrition, harvest and post harvest. The transaction, representing the purchase of 100 per cent of the equity interest of Bourgault, is for CAD$640 million, subject to customary adjustments. Bourgault will become part of a new Linamar Agriculture division within the broader industrial segment. The industrial segment also includes Skyjack, a manufacturer of aerial work platforms. This new agriculture group will continue to operate the shortline brands of MacDon, Salford, and Bourgault independently while maximizing overall growth opportunities globally, better enabling future agriculture technologies, improving the overall farm customer experience, as well as enhancing product support. The acquisition includes Bourgault’s Highline Manufacturing division which produces hay-handling and livestock-feeding equipment, as well as roto-moulding producer Free Form Plastics. Linda Hasenfratz, Linamar executive chair and CEO said, “We are thrilled to welcome Bourgault Industries into the Linamar family. Bourgault is another Canadian manufacturing success story that draws many similarities to Linamar’s history of entrepreneurism

and technical innovation. The Bourgault name is synonymous with broad acre agricultural seeding innovation and offers a tremendous opportunity for Linamar to further diversify and grow our agriculture platform, as well as our Industrial segment overall. It also further enhances our powerful synergistic diversification strategy whereby our industrial businesses benefit from purchasing leverage, global footprint and access to industry leading lean manufacturing expertise from our mobility businesses, while our mobility business benefits from the strong cash generation and brand expertise of our Industrial businesses. Together our business model provides an excellent formula for consistent, sustainable growth with strong margins and excellent balance sheet strength.” Jim Jarrell, Linamar’s president and COO added, “Bourgault is our third strategic acquisition of 2023, following two previous transactions within the mobility sector earlier this year. This work is the result of a well-defined strategy to grow our business with diversified product offerings, creating a larger potential addressable market and new pathways for future

revenue growth. Bourgault strengthens our short-line agriculture platform with strong brand recognition, a portfolio of advanced seeding technologies and an operational footprint that will enable us to better serve the core western Canadian and U.S. Midwest farm base.” Bourgault president Gerry Bourgault commented, “Bourgault was started by my father and has a rich history in agriculture. The Bourgault family is incredibly proud of the legacy we have created both here in in St. Brieux, Sask., but also around the world. We are excited to have our team of over 900 people in Saskatchewan, and over 1,000 worldwide, join the Linamar family. Linamar has a proven track record for not only successfully integrating acquired companies, but also for their manufacturing expertise and business execution overall. I am confident Linamar will take the Bourgault brand to new heights in its next chapter, while also allowing Bourgault to maintain and build upon its deep-rooted connections to its stakeholders in Saskatchewan and around the world.”

RDAR DELIVERS KEY RESEARCH INVESTMENT TO SUPPORT LIVESTOCK FEED INNOVATION

E

dmonton, AB – Results Driven Agriculture Research (RDAR) has announced a $110,291 investment in CBS Bio Platforms to enable Alberta to lead development of enhanced and sustainable feed. Industry-leading outcomes from this research project will strengthen Alberta’s reputation as a centre for world-class, livestock production. RDAR funding will drive research led by CBS Bio Platforms, a leading international feed technology company headquartered in Calgary, to develop novel processes that release previously inaccessible plant components and makes them usable in poultry and swine diets. “The impacts of success for this project will be farreaching for swine and poultry producers. Protein is a major variable expense for producers, and CBS is developing novel technologies, such as feed-derived prebiotics, to be used to maximize feed performance and replace antibiotic growth promoters.” — Rob Patterson, CBS Bio Platforms technical director. Positive research results will deliver producer benefits at the farm gate by reducing the feed cost and increasing quality. By improving feed’s overall economics and sustainability, this research will unlock hard-to-capture value in feed inputs. This research will broaden the toolbox of beneficial and affordable plant protein sources, diversify the options for alternatives to antimicrobial use and help meet the new market legislation and consumer preferences for poultry and swine products.

Quick Facts:

“Innovation in animal feed represents a great area of opportunity for Alberta’s economy and to help our livestock producers maximize benefits and increase profitability. This industry-directed investment from RDAR towards made-in-Alberta solutions will accelerate our progress to capture this potential — supporting a strong future that expands the boundaries of Alberta’s agriculture success.” — Nate Horner, minister of agriculture, forestry and rural economic development. Positive research outcomes will also help reduce agriculture’s environmental footprint. “This research will help our industry emerge as a leader in shaping and adopting the feed of the future, bringing efficiencies and other advantages that keep more dollars at the farm gate and strengthen the overall competitiveness of the sector.” — Clinton Dobson, RDAR director of research. The key to the project’s success will be leveraging the expertise and resources of CBS Bio Platforms to uncover a new pathway to unlocking plant protein potential. The project builds on a wealth of previous CBS feed technology research, particularly with enzyme technology.

• Increased demand for protein and the need to feed growing global populations will significantly impact climate, water consumption, land use, and biodiversity. By using novel, plant-derived substances (PDS), producers will gain efficiencies and productivity gains. • This research will help producers meet the demand for alternative protein sources (ex. hemp, flax meal, lentils and fava beans) of plant origin. • This research will broaden the available knowledge of novel PDS, and the use of PDSs as antibiotic alternatives.

“We’ve learned a lot about extracting more value and delivering unique advantages out of feed ingredients. By using enzyme technology, CBS breaks down the plant’s fibrous structures and releases components traditionally more difficult to access. This new project will take this approach to a new level of precision and power by capturing the protein fraction as well as functional carbohydrate fractions to create new high-value product streams.” — Rob Patterson, CBS Bio Platforms technical director. This project is funded by RDAR, the Government of Canada and the Government of Alberta through the Canadian Agricultural Partnership.

DEPRECIATION COSTS It is imperative to closely watch depreciation costs in the upcoming years, especially if commodity prices move lower Agri-News, January 15, 2024

gri-businesses utilize depreciable assets, and they acquire new capital assets or replace old ones as their business expands and evolves,” says Azam Nikzad, market analyst/co-ordinating researcher with the Alberta government. Canada Revenue Agency defines depreciation as the gradual decline in the value of an asset over time and the method used to allocate the cost of tangible assets throughout their operational lifespan. Higher depreciation costs imply increased costs for buildings, machinery and equipment, but it also suggests increased investment in these assets. Alberta’s agricultural sector has experienced a continued upward trend in total depreciation expenses, demonstrated by an average annual increase of 5.6 per cent over the past decade. Notably, depreciation on machinery represented 83 per cent of the total depreciation charges in 2022, whereas depreciation on buildings accounted for the remaining 17 per cent. Many factors contributed to the

surge in depreciation costs in the agricultural sector. One factor is the composition of capital shifting towards equipment, machinery and software. This shift implies a correlation between the evolving capital composition and the observed trend in depreciation rates. “Modernization of agricultural practices coupled with demand for more efficient farming has driven farmers to invest in technologically advanced equipment,” explains Nikzad. “New equipment comes at higher cost, contributing to the upward trend in depreciation charges. Furthermore, inflationary pressures on material and labour costs contribute to increased construction expenses, which increases asset values and leads to higher depreciation on new buildings.” The introduction of the Accelerated Investment Incentive program in 2018 allowed farmers to claim a higher Capital Cost Allowance (CCA) deduction within the first year of acquiring an eligible depreciable asset, thereby influencing the trajectory of CCA deductions throughout

The program encouraged businesses to invest in new capital assets, without altering the total deductible amount over the life of an asset. “There was an uptick in total depreciation charges following the program’s initiation, but the time span also happened to coincide with record high farm cash receipts and farm income in Alberta, especially in 2021 and 2022. This meant some farmers were probably in the mood to buy regardless. The program likely brought some investment forward. “In Canada, sales of certain types of farm equipment increased from Janu-

According to recent data from the Association of Equipment Manufacturers, sales of tractors over 100 hp were up 3.5 per cent, while combine sales were up 6.4 per cent and 4-wheel drive tractor sales were up a whopping 42 per cent.” “At the macro level, it will be interesting to monitor depreciation charges and its impact on realized net income in the coming years, especially if commodity prices were to move lower. At the farm level, understanding depreciation costs and using Capital Cost Allowance strategically can help manage taxes,” says Nikzad.

JOHN HOSPITAL FOUNDATION’S “I REMEMBER QUILT” A highlight of the Fort St. John Hospital Foundation’s Be an Angel Gala is the “I Remember Quilt,” meticulously crafted by volunteers in 2007. This unique quilt offers a poignant opportunity to honour the memories of departed loved ones. Each year, during the Be an Angel Gala, the quilt is auctioned, with the winning bidder receiving the honour of having their beloved’s name sewn into the quilt — a lasting tribute. he power of enduring friendships that transcend into family bonds is beautifully exemplified by Dean and Brenda Baumeister, Doug and Shelley Gallinger, Cameron Martin and Heather Popkes, Duane Jaschke, and Irma Baumeister. These remarkable friends, now a chosen family, joined forces at the Fort St. John Hospital Foundation’s Be an Angel Gala on November 4, 2023. Together, they secured a record winning bid of $21,000 for the “I Remember Quilt,” a heartfelt endeavor to immortalize Hubert Baumeister’s name as a timeless tribute to his memory. This isn’t the first time this close-knit group has rallied for such a cause. In 2021, they secured a winning bid to recognize Vance Dancy’s (Brenda Baumeister’s dad) on the quilt. In November 2022, their unwavering support continued as they won the bid to memorialize Roxanne Jaschke (Duane Jaschke’s wife) in the same way. Reflecting on the losses they’ve faced, Brenda Baumeister shared, “We’ve had three significant losses in our group of family and friends over the years, starting with Vance. Roxanne left us far too young in life, followed by Hubert. It was important for us to see Roxanne’s name embroidered into the quilt, memorialized between Vance and Hubert, who she iden-

tified as her adoptive dads, and both saw her as their own daughter. Our group of friends are not only close with each other, but also with our families.” Hubert, born in Germany in 1939, moved to Canada with his wife, Irma, in 1966, and settled in Fort St. John in 1968. A successful bricklayer, Hubert eventually formed his own company. Together with Irma, he owned a motel, farmed, and operated logging trucks. Remembered as a father, friend, mentor, a gentleman who put others first loved to travel and give the best hugs, Hubert’s legacy will forever be cherished through the “I Remember Quilt.”
