Statistics Canada in early December bumped its estimate of 2023 Canadian canola production by one million tonnes to 18.33 million tonnes. Although the higher production estimate was expected, confirmation of the higher production, with exports lagging last year, implies the potential for a sharp rise in canola carryover. “The major positive for canola prices is continuing strong crusher demand. Crushing margins remain profitable, implied by the estimated values of canola meal and canola oil relative to canola seed. Both canola product markets are well developed.” Canola oil demand has been growing with the increasing demand for renewable biodiesel, and Canadian canola oil exports have been increasingly bound for the U.S. However, because a portion of canola’s market via canola oil is tied to biodiesel, it is subject to the price of diesel and crude oil. Both of those markets have been weakening lately, on ideas that supply will outstrip demand as world economies slow into 2024. “So, during the winter into next spring, for Canadian canola prices to sustain improvement, continued strong crushing demand and improved export demand is needed. Crop concerns in South America may redevelop and provide at least a temporary price boost. Canola basis level changes provide a good signal of canola market condition,” says Blue.

Alberta Agri-News anola prices have been struggling this crop year, to the frustration of producers who had been expecting a seasonal post-harvest price improvement,” says Neil Blue, provincial crops market analyst with the Alberta government. “There are a number of factors affecting the canola market.” Canola prices started to rise following the 2021 drought in Alberta and some other oilseed producing countries. PostCOVID economic improvement was also a demand-supporting factor. Following the high prices of the 202122 crop year, world oilseed production rebounded. Australia produced a record canola crop last year and was a major competitor on the world market. Brazil produced a record soybean crop earlier this year and is now projected to produce about the same volume in 2024, despite some adverse weather to date. “Although a certain level of Canadian canola demand is stable, at high prices the more flexible demand will move to less costly alternative vegetable oil sources,” explains Blue. “A canola negative so far this crop year is lower Canadian canola exports. According to weekly Canadian Grain Commission data, canola exports at the one-third point of this crop year are down from the year ago pace by 620,000 tonnes, or 23 per cent. Fortunately, Canadian crushers have used 300,000 tonnes more canola than a year ago to date, but total canola usage is still lower.”

CONSIDER SHOP RATES A FARM INPUT

ithin the agricultural sector, producers should consider shop rates as a farm input,” says Azam Nikzad, provincial market analyst/co-ordinating researcher with the Alberta government. “Shop rates refer to the hourly rate of basic shop charges for repairs to farm machinery conducted by a qualified mechanic or an authorized dealer.” Over the past decade, Alberta’s shop rates have shown a consistent upward trend. The rate of increase has accelerated in the last five years, with an average annual increase of 4.1 per cent, surpassing the 3.8 per cent of the past decade. The year-to-date (January to end of October) increase for 2023 stands at 7.5 per cent, marking the highest spike in the last decade. “Several factors contribute to the escalation of shop rates, including a shortage of skilled labour, increased wages, inflation, interest rates, utility prices and lease or rent cost,” says Nikzad. “Repair shops are heavily reliant on labour. People employed in repair shops often require on-thejob experience or specialized training, which can be another obstacle.” To cope with labour shortages, businesses sometimes extend the working hours of existing employ-

ees, leading to a surge in overtime pay and increased overall labour costs. “Shops can manage this challenge by integrating new technology to decrease their dependence on labour.” It is important to recognize the dynamics of how labour and non-labour costs have contributed to overall cost increases in the past few years, says Nikzad. Initially, labour costs played a more significant role, but in recent years, non-labour costs have become more significant. Factors such as increased interest rates, the required return on capital and lease or rent cost, have contributed to this shift, further complicating the economic landscape for repair shops.

they are: different crops, different seeds. Seed separation thus, becomes a conundrum. To circumvent this, a relay seeding method could be adopted. In this way, a cash crop can be sown early in the growing season and within a month or so, a second crop is then seeded. This is conducted by taking advantage of the fact that the first crop planted has not grown tall enough to be ruined by machinery while placing the second crop into the ground. Best management practices (BMPs) are present because (a) ground coverage is present, which may reduce potential soil erosion form air and water after the end of the growing season, (b) a living root is kept which preserves the dynamism of the soil underground system, even during the cold months of the year and (c) this becomes a door to try and innovate strategies of relay intercropping. Harvesting will consequently occur at the end of the growing season and possibly in the middle of the growing season the following year. In turn, every second year there is a chance that two harvests would be performed during the growing season. More importantly harvest of the relay crop could also be conducted without damaging the crop seeded early spring the year prior. Similar to the way seeding was carried out for this same crop.

Table 1. It is hypothesized that through this system, lower seeding rates on the winter cereals will lead to higher yields from annual cereals due to less competition for water. Moreover, fall rye, and triticale will have the highest winter survivability values, thus may not benefit from higher seeding rates when interseeded with spring wheat the prior growing season. Hence our Spring wheat yield (Table 2) was affected by winter crop used as a relay. In conclusion, the best relay crop for ensuring enough spring wheat stands is triticale at 25% of the recommended rate. However, rye relay is likely the best crop to ensure greater wheat yield in the first growing season. On the other hand, annual ryegrass on the other hand may reduce wheat yield. Finally, winter relay crops in general have no influence in test weight or protein content.

officials are meeting with municipalities, water users, farmers, industry and others to share information and look at ways to conserve water where possible in the coming months. A water advisory committee of experts from outside government will also be formed to provide advice and recommendations. More information will be announced in the coming weeks.

QUICK FACTS

• Over the spring, summer and fall of 2023, the provincial government worked with municipalities and helped livestock and poultry producers in hard-hit areas to find alternative sources of water. In some basins, water restrictions were put in place for licence holders and some municipalities also put voluntary or mandatory water restrictions in place to help conserve water. • The governments of Alberta and Canada are providing $165 million to support livestock producers affected by drought and extreme growing conditions. • In October, the last month when rivers are completely free of ice, many river stations in Alberta experienced record low average monthly flows. • Bow River at Calgary was the second lowest it has been since 2000. • Elbow River at Bragg Creek was the lowest it has been since 2000. • Sheep River at Black Diamond was the second lowest it has been since 2000. • Willow Creek near Claresholm was the lowest it has been since 2000. • Oldman River at Lethbridge was the third lowest it has been since 2000. • South Saskatchewan River at Medicine Hat was the second lowest it has been since 2000. • Peace River at Peace River was the lowest it has been since 2000.

Alberta Agri-News lberta relies on melting snow and rain for most of its water. A lack of rain and early depletion of mountain snow led to drought in parts of the province this summer and below average precipitation has continued through the fall. The provincial government is issuing a request for proposal to help conduct modelling throughout the winter and to work with municipalities, water users, industry and others to explore ways to maximize the province’s water supply, if needed. Throughout the winter, the province will work with partners to find ways to manage and conserve water and to develop plans for 2024. “When it comes to water, we are all in this together. We cannot make it rain or snow, but we are preparing in case the province faces water shortages next year,” says Rebecca Schulz, minister of Environment and Protected Areas. “This RFP will help complement the work my department already has underway to ensure that we make the most out of every drop in the coming months.” Alberta has dealt with drought conditions in two of the past three years, with 2023 being a particularly dry year. The province is now at stage four (of five) in its water shortage management plan. Moving to stage five would include an emergency declaration under the Water Act. Along with this request for proposal, government

“My Heros have always been cowboys” ... and still are it seems

te: 024 a D he 2

I am so proud of the cattlemen we deal with... and I’m proud of our industry. Every day millions of dollars in cattle trade on a “handshake” and a man’s word. Nowhere else in todays world does that happen. Cattle folks still have their common sense, their resilience and their determination. They have good “BS” detectors and no time for “hollow politicians” That’s why “cowboys have always been my heros” Enjoy the good times... we all deserve them.

How our bulls are developed...

How our cows are managed..

We sell all summer born two year old bulls. We believe they are the ideal age and we develop them to maintain soundness and longevity. • Calves are born mid-May until the first week of July - grass calved - checked, tagged and weighed only once per day. No night checks, cameras or calving barn. (with this system problems eliminate themselves.) • We wean in November, bull calves are backgrounded in big groups till spring on a silage based growing ration. • By spring our bulls are well grown out but not fleshy... just perfect to take advantage of our grass. • Bulls are sorted by breed and size into groups of 30-50 bulls. • Bulls go to our management intensive grazing paddocks from late May or June until late October. • Water is provided by solar systems or surface piped fresh water. • We move bulls to fresh grass every two days all summer long. • The pasture is good quality, everyday, it ensures they grow well all summer. A real bonus here is that they are used to a man on foot and constant checking. • As summer progresses we supplement the bulls with a low energy, high protein pellet made specifically to our specs and made of pea and lentil hulls. No starch, high fibre with added minerals and vitamins. (about the nutrient content of good alfalfa hay) • In late fall the bulls are brought to our bull lots and placed on our silage based bull development TMR (total mixed ration.) This is ideal because every mouthful the bull takes he has the right proportion of all nutrients, no bingeing on just grain. No barley or coarse grain is fed, just our bull development pellets. • Our rations and protocols have been developed over years of experience to bring you the best, most durable bulls possible.

• We maintain a large cowherd managed under commercial conditions to minimize cost and time, every cow is a registered purebred. • Cows calve in May and June on stock piled grass - we do not feed our cows during calving...they rustle! • They are grass calved in groups of 200 or so checked by one man once per day to tag and weigh. • No night checks, cameras or calving barns. • Calving is what our cows do...not what we do! (with this system problems eliminate themselves) • Cows are sorted (paired out on horseback to have a good look at feet, udders, milk etc.) in late June to our breeding pastures. • Our pastures are spread over 150 miles so nearly every one goes on a liner going somewhere. • We use all natural service...Bulls go out August 1 for 60 days. • Calves are weaned starting mid October to mid November group by group. • Cows are left on grazing for as long as possible into fall. • Cows move home and are wintered on standing corn in groups of 200 per quarter controlled with electric fence. Our objective is 200 cow/days per acre, they lick snow for water. • Our cows go from the calving pastures to summer grazing and breeding, make a short stop at the home ranch for weaning, then on to the standing corn. Corn to grass, grass to corn and on it goes, with no supplement feeding and no hauling feed or manure. I just believe that as soon as you put machinery or diesel fuel between a cow’s mouth and what she eats, it does nothing but cost money.

Why our Sight Unseen is so successful, so easy and used by more customers every year

Sight Unseen Purchase Plan

“Our sale is not online so our sight unseen is a perfect option” “There were five bulls that came off the trailer. I picked the one I liked best in my head. Not knowing which one was mine. Once they sorted them the one I picked ended up in my trailer. Thanks a lot. You guys got me the bull I would have picked myself and you did it sight unseen.” -C. Tonneson, AB “We bought two hereford bulls sight unseen. The whole process of getting such good quality bulls was absolutely painless, right from the first conversation to delivery. The bulls were everything we expected and more. Easy fleshing they maintained their weight through breeding” - G&S Clark, AB

“The Sight Unseen Purchase Program you offer, coupled with a rock solid reputation, unquestioned convenience and a large battery of quality, affordable sale bulls has again made bull buying from your ranch a pleasure.” - J. Comrie, MB

We will stage a normal live auction and we certainly encourage our customers to come view the bulls anytime before the sale, remember sight unseen is a foolproof option. • I will personally visit with each and every customer, discuss your requirements and talk through bull choices. • I know these bulls. My men and I have calved them, watched them grow, fed them and handled them. You deal with us not a third party. • We guarantee your complete satisfaction. While we seldom deliver an unsatisfactory bull, it is entirely your choice to accept him on arrival...SIMPLY PUT - YOU MUST LIKE HIM WHEN DELIVERED OR WE TAKE HIM HOME NO PROBLEM. • When you have viewed the bull book, the videos and the photos, you and I will make a short list of your choices and discuss your budget. • We will absolutely never bid on or buy a bull that you and I have not carefully pre-selected as being suitable. • Most important...WE DON’T WANT YOU TO PAY FOR THE BULL UNTIL YOU HAVE SEEN HIM YOURSELF in the flesh at your ranch. Then and only then do you make settlement. • You can call anytime at your convenience to talk bulls.

Sales of lick tubs, molasses blocks, and protein supplement continue to be strong. The question to consider is: what Is the appropriate product or combination of products to use? There are many factors to consider along with the type of animal being fed, feed quality, availability, and weather. Five pieces of information are needed before making a decision 1. Representative feed samples with accurate analysis 2. Animal weights 3. Bale weights 4. Ability to weigh out components in the ration (Total Mixed Ration) 5. How each feed is supplied.

Jennings Martin Cattle Buying would like to thank everyone for a very successful 2023 and we look forward to continue working with you as we move into 2024. We would like to assure all Peace Country cattle producers that we will continue to work hard to offer fair prices while providing a stress-free environment for both you and your cattle.

Supplementing protein can be done in many ways. Is there a higher quality forage available? If not, does the product of choice meet animal requirements? Two options are to feed one pound of a 20% protein supplement ($385 / tonne, or 17.5 cents a pound). Feeding 0.4 pounds of wheat distillers’ grains with solubles (WDG) which contains 48% protein at a cost of $535 / tonne, or 24 cents a pound) supplies the same amount of protein. If protein is the only concern, the WDG is more economical to use. Both options are usually fed with grain or mixed into silage in a controlled feeding program.

Our facility in La Glace continues to remain open, buying all classes of bulls, cows, steers and heifers, saving you the need for shipping to local and southern markets.

Another option is to feed tubs or blocks, free choice. With this option, it is not possible to know how much product individual animals are consuming. The free choice systems have a greater risk of not achieving the intake that is required. In the above example, a 1,400-pound cow in late pregnancy requires a 9% protein diet (dry basis) or 1,020 grams of protein per day. Adding one pound of a 20% supplement or 0.4 pounds of WDG increases protein content in the ration by 90 grams or 0.5% on a dry matter basis. If the ration contains 8% protein, it would be necessary to double the feeding rates to meet requirements.

NOW ON FACEBOOK Check for our Weekly Updates

There are times when label recommendations do not work. Each situation is different. Balancing rations can improve the use of available feeds and evaluate which purchased product(s) best meet the needs of the animals. It has the potential to reduce costs as well.

and successful,” said Pam Alexis, minister of Agriculture and Food. “By supporting B.C. processors, we are ensuring a sustainable food supply as well as economic growth that will benefit our communities.” B.C.’s Food Processing Growth Fund is helping companies, such as T-Brothers in Coquitlam and Better Seafood Supply in Victoria, increase their productivity, strengthen competitiveness and gain new economic opportunities. authentic Korean staples to B.C. for almost 30 years. The company pioneered the sale and large-scale manufacturing of kimchi in Canada. Today, the Coquitlambased manufacturer’s products are found in every corner of the country. Kimchi, Korea’s national dish, is becoming popular beyond its traditional market. To meet growing consumer demand for their product, the company is investing in new equipment. The province is supporting T-Brothers to purchase automatic washing and packaging machinery to increase efficiency and product output. “We’ve been bringing the authentic flavours of Korea to British Columbia since 1994 and we’re glad to see more people enjoying this Korean favourite,” said Jeff Mo, CEO of T-Brothers. “Through support from this fund, we are implementing new ways to increase production of our traditionally made kimchi and meet the increasing demand.” Born and raised on Vancouver Island, Better Seafood Supply’s Gregg Best was accustomed to the fishing-boat life from a young age. Beginning in Duncan as Cowichan Bay Seafood in the 1980s, Better Seafood Supply was born of greater demand in the Victoria area. Since then, it has grown into its storefront Oak Bay Seafood and continued with its mission of providing sustainably caught seafood to customers, while ensuring fishers get a fair price for their catch. With its funding, Better Seafood Supply plans to ramp up production of its smoking operations to prepare for the winter season. The new fund is also helping the business grow through the purchase of additional slicers, skinning machines, patty makers and a new vacuum-packaging machine. “Fishing is an integral part of British Columbia’s food landscape and consumers rely on fresh, local catch from its abundant waters,” said Best. “With this funding, we will continue to deliver high quality, sustainable, trusted seafood that lives up to our values, as we improve production and packaging to ensure B.C.’s seafood is enjoyed by many more people.” The Ministry of Agriculture and Food announced the $20 million Food Processing Growth Fund in April. It is delivered by the Investment Agriculture Foundation. Board chair Jack Dewit said the foundation had a record-breaking applicant response to the program.
