Crop reports for the 2023 growing season have begun

Every year from May until the end of harvest (October or November), Alberta Agriculture and Irrigation (AGI) in partnership with Agriculture Financial Services Corporation (AFSC) and the Alberta Agricultural Fieldmen, delivers the Alberta Crop Reporting program.

Dan Przybylski

“The Alberta Crop Report captures timely information related to crop production in Alberta during the current crop season,” says Brooklyn Wong, crop statistician with AGI. “Data collected through the surveys, along with the information from other sources are used to compile the weekly crop reports at both provincial and regional levels.”

Information is gathered through weekly surveys which collect data on moisture, crop conditions, seeding and harvest progress, insect

and disease outbreaks, yield potential and crop quality.

“Crop reports help producers make informed management decisions and are used by the Ministry, industry and other stakeholders for various purposes, including drought monitoring and forecasting of production insurance payments,” explains Wong.

Both AFSC and AGI will be taking turns writing the Crop Reports. The first report for the 2023 growing season will be publicly released on May 5. Weekly reports will be published thereafter, until the end of the crop year. Reports for the months of July and August will be bi-weekly.

For more information, connect with Brooklyn Wong: 780-422-2887

Prespatou 4-H Community Club Report

Wow I am loving this weather, this is probably the best time of year.

Hello readers my name is Jessica Wiebe I am a Sr member of the Prespatou 4-H Community Club.

It’s the time of the year where the 4-H members are very busy. The sheep members just got their lambs in April and are working with them, the beef members are working with their animals to make sure they are sound proof and ready for achievement days.

For our club this is the month of fundraising. We have one of the member’s grandfather making some planters and benches. Also our club has some picnic tables that we did not get to sell last summer. Our leaders will be advertising those items on the North Peace 4H District Facebook page so be sure to go check that out. We are also cooking hotdogs for the Prespatou School Carnival May 5. Thank you to Fort St John Co-op for bringing out the BBQ and the hotdogs. We also made an agreement with Dawson Road Maintenance and we’ve got a 5 km ditch garbage cleanup that we will be doing in our community.

In April we had our first sheep weigh in, we did it together with the district. All of our animals were big enough to use in this 4H year, so we were happy about that. The members have been working hard to get their lambs to trust them and beginning the leading process for the last month. Our club does once a month weigh ins with the sheep so that will come up here shortly.

It has been difficult to work with the beef animals due to the mud in their pens. But now, since it is a bit drier, it’ll work better to lead the beef animals. I brought my heifer out a couple days ago and just to get her used to some new surroundings and some sounds that were going on on our yard. Thankfully she did only get away once, but it took less than five minutes for me to get her a back. Will be having beef weigh in sometime this month as well.

So, as you know, our achievement days are in July we have a few changes this year. We had to move our achievement days back a week. We can’t use the North Peace fairgrounds due to the safety inspection so we will be going to the Dawson fairgrounds for achievement days this year. Dates to remember for this are July 15 and 16, 2023. The sale will still be on Sunday. It will just be in the VJV auction mart, as far as we know.

That’s all from me, I will let Arielle take over know.

Hello my name is Arielle Reimer. I am a member of the Prespatou 4H Community Club. Today I will be sharing more about dog 4-H. The most important part of dog 4-H is that you need to get to know your dog, in order to do certain things. I mean your dog can be challenging especially if your dog is stubborn like mine. Which makes it very hard to train a dog. So all you have to do is work really hard. Our club is doing some lessons on dog

training to help us train our dogs and show us some tricks that might help us train our dogs. In our first session, we learned this game called choice. It was a game that teaches your dog to sit stay and wait for you to tell a dog that they can get the treat. We also learned a couple tricks on how to recall you learned how to teach a dog to sit and stay now it’s time to put all the stuff I learned to work to get me and my dog ready for achievement days. 4-H is a fun experience and I learned a lot.

That all for me have an amazing spring.

We’reAmbitious. Fromthefieldtothedesk, weareconstantly challengingourselvesto bethebestwecanbe.

All evacuation orders lifted in northeastern BC as rain arrives

All evacuation orders related to wildfires in northeastern British Columbia have now been lifted or downgraded to evacuation alerts as heavy rain eases the fire danger.

The Peace River Regional District has cancelled orders issued last week affecting properties threatened by the Stoddart Creek fire northeast of Fort St. John.

Officials made the announcement Monday evening, as they also lifted an evacuation order covering properties around the estimated 13,000-square-kilometre Donnie Creek fire southeast of Fort Nelson.

Evacuation alerts still cover more than 500

properties in northeastern B.C., but rainfall warnings are now posted for a large part of that region and Environment Canada says up to 100 millimetres is expected to fall before the system eases.

The River Forecast Centre has posted flood watches for much of east-central B.C., from the Peace River area to the Kootenay, Boundary and Okanagan areas.

It says extremely warm conditions over the last week have speeded snowmelt, swelling rivers and leaving them vulnerable to added rainfall and the potential for flooding or debris flows.

We’reCommitted.

We have recently been filling composted manure to sell as a fundraiser for our 4-H Club. This has become an annual thing in our club. Recently we have used some of the money we raised to make new lake shore 4-H club shirts and banners. This year we have filled roughly 270 sacks to sell at Home Hardware who are sponsors for 4-H Clubs. Earlier this month we were doing our 4-H judging at the Newdorfs who are our neighbours. This year we did our judging a little bit different. Newdorfs had a

bunch of heifers that they needed to decide which ones they wanted to keep. So we learned to work as a team to judge and sort the heifers. In the end Mr. Newdorf checked out how we did and he an agreed to every pick. That’s all for today folk’s thanks for reading Lakeshores 4-H article.

Quintin and Anika over and out!

Stewart: working with horses for more than 30 years

Glenn Stewart has been working with horses and their owners for over 30 years teaching thousands of students his Horse Development Program.

Glenn’s work with and knowledge of horses is diverse. He travels extensively each year delivering horsemanship clinics across Canada, the United States, South America and Europe.

Glenn leads camps at his home near Fort St. John - The Horse Ranch. For 19 consecutive years, he has led the Learning Holiday Adventure High & Wild in the Northeastern Rocky Mountains –a remote location 160 Kilometers from the nearest roads.

Glenn was in charge of the horse program and developing 200+ herd of wild horses. This included: the breeding program, seasonal round-up, the taming/ gentling, foot breaking, trimming, overall maintenance of the herd and welfare.

Ultimately horses were prepared annually for people from all over the world, with varying degrees of horsemanship abilities to be able

to safely ride in the wilderness of the Canadian Rockies.

Glenn has successfully competed at numerous world class events:

Reserve World Champion, 2022 Road to the Horse Colt Starting Competition, Lexington, Kentucky Champion, 2021 Heart of the Horse Colt Starting Competition, Canada

Champion, 2019 Heart of the Horse Colt Starting Competition, Canada

Canadian Representative 2012 World Championship of Colt Starting, Tennessee USA Champion, 2010 Cowboy Up Challenge, Calgary Stampede, Canada

Nominated for Western Horseman of the Year

Glenn also leads Learning Holiday Adventures and destination clinics in Brazil at world class Lusitano breeders and ranches, as well as on the beaches and ranches in Costa Rica.

How to use CropChoice$

“This popular budgeting and economic modelling tool can help producers finalize their 2023 crop plans,” says Emmanuel Anum Laate, senior crop economist with the Alberta government.

Download the program. Double click on the CropChoice$ icon and choose ‘Start’ from the welcome screen.

At the top right of the main input screen, enter your township, range, meridian and soil zone information.

Select the crops you want to grow and chose whether it is going to be on stubble, fallow or irrigated land. CropChoice$ provides producers with the ability to choose from 40 different dry land and irrigated crops and handles up to 32 fields.

Enter the number of acres, worst possible, best possible and most likely yields and prices for each crop you want to grow.

Once the crops are selected, the program automatically enters default costing information based on soil zone, crop type and cultivation practice. Review the numbers carefully and update them with your own cropping and financial information. Once

completed, this crop plan becomes the base scenario or scenario 1 of the producer.

Click the ‘Run Simulation’ button on the left side of the screen. After a few seconds, the ‘Scenario Analysis’ screen will appear.

Click on the ‘Input Data Preview’ icon. After a few seconds, a report appears. At the bottom of this report, contribution margins and gross margins for individual crops are listed.

Choose crops with high contribution margins.

To create additional scenarios, go to the ‘Main Input’ screen, click on the ‘Scenario Number’ drop-down box, choose the next number, and follow the instructions as they appear.

Run a simulation for each new scenario by clicking on the ‘Run Simulation’ button at the top left of the ‘Main Input Screen’. The ‘Scenario Analysis’ screen appears after each simulation.

Finally, compare the expected gross margins and standard deviations which is a statistical measure of risk for each scenario. Choose the scenario or crop plan that best fits your expected gross.

Indigenous-led projects support food sovereignty

opportunities to employ local contractors in the community.”

Indigenous governments, communities and businesses are increasing their food sovereignty and food security through projects that strengthen their food systems and success within the agriculture and food sector.

“Our government is supporting Indigenous communities with their food security, food sovereignty and economic development goals and it is important we work together to build strong, self-sustaining food systems that respect Indigenous Peoples’ rights and cultures,” said Pam Alexis, Minister of Agriculture and Food. “This program is creating more food and agriculture opportunities for Indigenous communities, and taking an important step toward the equitable participation of Indigenous Peoples in the B.C. agriculture sector.”

The Indigenous Food Systems and Agriculture Partnership Program (IFSAP) is supporting Indigenous governments, communities and businesses with agriculture, food processing and food-systems planning, as well as training and skills development, technological adoption, scaling up productivity and profitability, and climate change adaptation.

The Nuu-chah-nulth Youth Warrior Family is bringing renewed energy to traditional seafood gardens along the west coast of Vancouver Island, in four Nuu-chah-nulth territories. Youth Warriors from eight Nations, aged 12 to 25, are supported by their Elders, community mentors and external experts to restore, manage and celebrate clam gardens. This traditional practice used by Indigenous communities along the coast will help enhance the habitat of intertidal species and support the food sovereignty and security goals of many communities.

“Restoring the Nuu-chah-nulth Seafood Gardens project provides food security so we can take care of ourselves and is reinvigorating a tradition we used to do,” said Hayden Seitcher, 22, Tla-o-qui-aht community co-ordinator, Nuuchah-nulth Youth Warrior Family. “Having the community come

together creates opportunity to connect and create new roots for the youth.”

The Ucwalmicw Centre Society is an Indigenous-led non-profit group that has been working with St’at’imc territory members on the Ucwalmicw Community Farm for 10 years. Their Indigenous food-security project includes planting, growing, harvesting and processing organic fruit, vegetables and seeds to distribute to the community. The society has a greenhouse, cultivated fields and a diverse apple and stone-fruit orchard. Funding is supporting the completion of a building space for food processing, storage and distribution, and to host foodsecurity training.

“The IFSAP program funding is helping us to finish our construction phase of the new Food Security Building in T’it’q’et, which will complement the large Ucwalmicw community farm and serve as a beautiful location for local food processing, distribution and educational opportunities,” said Chelsea Tims, community farm manager, Ucwalmicw Centre Society. “The construction of the building has also offered us

Xeni Gwet’in First Nations Government is using the funding from the program to support the expansion of the community garden, host traditional foods and harvesting workshops, develop Tŝilhqot’in training and educational materials, and to pilot a community farmers’ market. The project is helping increase access to affordable and fresh food while reducing travel to the closest grocery store, approximately 200 kilometres away.

“We are working toward building

a food system that will improve food security in our community for generations to come,” said Dalton Baptiste, administrator, XGFNG First Nations. “The funding from this program will enable us to grow our own food in our community and will support the passing along of our traditional teachings.”

The program was developed with guidance from the B.C. Indigenous Advisory Council on Agriculture and Food. The program is funded by Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada and the Government of British Columbia, and delivered by the Investment Agriculture Foundation of BC.

New tax credit opens the door to big investments

The program offers a 12 per cent non-refundable tax credit based on eligible capital expenditures to corporations investing $10 million or more to build or expand agri-processing facilities in the province.

“Alberta’s new Agri-processing Investment Tax Credit program is an incredible opportunity that will diversify our economy and help eligible corporations from across North America and the world expand their operations, save money and grow their agriprocessing business here in Alberta.”

Nate Horner, Minister of Agriculture and Irrigation

With a strong primary agriculture sector, competitive tax system and commitment to reducing economic barriers, Alberta is the ideal location for businesses looking to expand and thrive in the agri-processing sector.

Eligibility

To be eligible for the program, companies must be incorporated, registered or continued under Alberta’s Business Corporations

Act, with the proposed investment plan having a minimum of $10 million in new capital expenditures.

The project must also be physically located in Alberta, be a new project or a significant expansion of an existing valueadded agricultural processing facility, and project expenditures must directly support an eligible value-added agricultural activity.

Corporations with other provincial funding sources may also be eligible for the tax credit.

How to apply

Applicants must apply for conditional approval for the Agriprocessing Investment Tax Credit program by filling an online application form and submitting a proposed investment plan and Class 4 engineering estimate.

For more information on the Agri-processing Investment Tax Credit program, interested parties can email APITC@gov. ab.ca.

Relief to help producers manage financial challenges

eligible participating producers could save an additional $3,600 in interest costs on average for the year. This change will represent total savings of up to $12.4 million.

to the interest-free portion of the Advance Payments Program from $100,000 to $250,000 for the 2022 and 2023 program years.

In recognition of the significant financial challenges facing Canadian producers, the Minister of Agriculture and Agri-Food, the Honourable Marie-Claude Bibeau, today confirmed that the interest-free limit of the Advance Payments Program has been increased from $250,000 to $350,000 for the 2023 program year, effective May 8, 2023. This is the portion of advances on which the Government of Canada pays the interest on behalf of producers.

Under the Advance Payments Program, producers have easy access to favorable cash advances of up to $1 million, based on the expected value of their

agricultural product. The program can also provide some flexibility by allowing producers to sell their agricultural products based on market conditions rather than the need for cash.

Last year, the Government of Canada increased the interest-free limit from $100,000 to $250,000 for the 2022 and 2023 program years, saving producers an average of $8,600 over the two years. The further increase means producers have access to additional cash flow and more interest savings to help cover costs until they can sell their products.

By increasing the interestfree limit to $350,000 for 2023,

The Government of Canada remains committed to ensuring producers have the resources they need to sustain their livelihoods through challenging times. The government will also consult with provincial and territorial counterparts to explore ways to extend help to smaller agricultural producers who demonstrate urgent financial need.

“Agricultural producers continue to face significant financial challenges including high input costs and rising interest rates. This new increase in the interest-free portion of Advance Payments Program loans will generate savings for our farmers so they can maintain production to sustain their livelihoods,” says Marie-Claude Bibeau, Minister of Agriculture and Agri-Food

On June 23, 2022, Minister Bibeau announced an increase

Budget 2023 proposed $13 million in 2023-24 to Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada to increase the interest-free limit for loans under the Advance Payments Program from $250,000 to $350,000 for the 2023 program year.

It is estimated that the total government investment resulting from these program changes for both 2022 and 2023 could be around $94.9 million.

The amendment to the Agricultural Marketing Programs Regulations is not retroactive, meaning the new limit will be applied to existing advances under the 2023 Advance Payments Program as of May 8, 2023, when the regulatory amendment came into force.

Why bighorn sheep and domestic sheep or goats should not mix

“Domestic sheep and goats commonly carry a bacterium called Mycoplasma ovipneumoniae (M. ovi) that can cause pneumonia and large-scale population die-offs of bighorn sheep following close contact with an infected animal,” explains Anne Hubbs, senior wildlife biologist with the Alberta government.

Signs of the disease in bighorns include coughing, nasal discharge, weight loss and in most cases, death. Unlike their wild counterparts, many domestic animals with M. ovi show no visible signs of the disease.

“There are no vaccines or treatments for wild sheep (or mountain goats who are also susceptible to the disease), so maintaining physical separation from domestic sheep and goats is very important.”

Alberta Environment and Protected Areas (AEPA) has identified high-risk areas near bighorn ranges where domestic sheep and goat use on crown lands is prohibited (example: for industry) or strongly discouraged.

AEPA, in collaboration with Agriculture and Irrigation, has also initiated a voluntary testing and fencing program for domestic sheep and goat producers in these areas. Funding is available

from the government through a Minister’s Special Licence grant to cover producers’ costs related to these activities.

Albertans are asked to help protect bighorn sheep by:

not taking M. ovi positive domestic sheep or goats on public lands in high-risk areas testing domestic sheep and goats for M. ovi (government funding is available)

using ‘no-contact’ fencing to prevent close contact with bighorn sheep (government funding is available)

testing hunter-harvested bighorn sheep for M. ovi (refer to the Alberta Hunting Guide for further information)

reporting sightings of bighorn sheep near your domestic sheep or goats, or sick bighorn sheep, by calling your local Alberta Parks and Protected Areas biologist (call 310-0000)

helping increase awareness of M. ovi (tell a friend or colleague of the risk)

Questions about the testing and fencing program for domestic sheep and goat producers? Contact Dr. Heather Van Esch, surveillance veterinarian with the Alberta government, at 403-9488536.

Canadian canola market

“Canola is Canada’s number one oilseed crop, with average Canadian production of about 20 million tonnes compared to 6.5 million tonnes of soybeans,” says Neil Blue, provincial crops market analyst with the Alberta government.

Canola contains about 42% oil and 58% meal. Both canola products are known for high quality and have well-established markets. Canola meal is valued mainly as an animal protein feed, competitive with alternative protein sources such as soybean meal. Canola oil is known for its attractive characteristics for human consumption and is increasingly being used in the production of biodiesel.

Annual world vegetable oil production is near 210 million tonnes. Of that total, annual world rapeseed oil production, including canola oil, is estimated at 31 million tonnes. Soybean oil comprises about 60 million tonnes

of the world total. The largest volume vegetable oil is palm oil at 77 million tonnes. The largest palm oil producers and exporters are Indonesia and Malaysia, with those 2 countries producing 90% of the global total.

Palm oil is used for cooking, food products, detergents, cosmetics and increasingly so for biofuel. Palm oil production per acre is high, one reason that it is usually the lowest priced vegetable oil. Although palm oil has many positive attributes, a negative is that about half of its fat content is saturated.

“In a competitive world market, lower price can outweigh other characteristics of a product,” explains Blue. “Although canola is shown as priced in Canadian dollars and palm oil in U.S. dollars per tonne, the message from the chart below is that the price of a competing vegetable oil like palm oil is correlated to the price of canola. There are times like last

fall when canola seed had relative price strength, but overall, the price correlation has been high during the past year.”

The sharp move lower of canola prices in March 2023 coincided with a drop in palm oil prices, soybean oil prices and other large volume vegetable oil prices.

“Crude oil prices also dropped during that period, evidence of the increasing connection of vegetable

oil to the fuel industry,” says Blue. “Such price correlation among vegetable oils is a reminder that the Canadian canola market is not isolated and is subject to price action of competing products across the world.”

Vilna is naturally inviting! And welcoming!

addition to this piece of art, the village has numerous murals and sculptures.

Vilna is also one of the Iron Horse Trail communities. You can access the trail in Vilna and take in nearly 300 km of trail east and west of the Village. OHV’s are allowed within village limits to access their services and attractions.

stops.

Vilna is one of those hidden gems in Alberta that deserves more recognition. Their historic main street will take you back in time with wooden sidewalks, 1920’s style storefronts and an operational pool hall built over 100 years ago. Even oldfashioned kindness is still prevalent in Vilna, as they became “Alberta’s Most Welcoming Community” in 2022, by receiving an overwhelming number of nominations through the Rumble Alberta Best of Alberta contest.

This community spirit has a long history. The region was settled, primarily by Ukrainian and

Polish immigrants, around 1907. Between then and when the town was named in 1920 the Great War was grinding to a bloody halt and the Russian revolution was in full swing. It was in the years of Prohibition and moonshining was a profitable but dangerous business in Vilna. Still, amongst all of the turmoil, globally and locally, the local residents chose the name “VIlna,” which means peace in Ukrainian.

In addition to mainstreet, Vilna is home to the largest metal sculpture mushrooms; a popular selfie spot and part of the Alberta Big Icon tour on the Travel-ING On / History Check app. In

Other attractions and nearby activities include the Vilna Golf Course, Bonnie Lake for camping and boating; Saddle Lake Cree Nation Museum and Metis Crossing. Another unique stop is GoodVibes Cannabis, the first educational cannabis store in Alberta.

You will find all of the services you need in Vilna for living and travel including a pharmacy, the health centre, an ATB for banking services, school, an antique store and eclectic restaurants including Porky’s Side Street Cafe and Black Cat’s Cauldron Tea & Herb House. Their signs alone should make great selfie

A variety of seasonal markets take place throughout the year in Vilna and the surrounding communities. The Vilna Farmers’ Market is open on Sundays from May to November. If you are planning a late summer trip, Boomtown Days takes place during the 3rd weekend in August. The Smoky Lake Pumpkin Fair, Waskatenau Fair Days, Smoky Lake Stampede and the Randy Russ Memorial Barrel Racing (Bellis) are annual events across the Region.

Combined, it is easy to see that you can spend a day or several exploring Vilna and the surrounding region. You can camp at the Bonnie Lake Campground or soon, stay in the historic hotel.

Today, the Village of Vilna boasts a population of 300. Still a rural community surrounded by farms the outlying areas bring the number up to 4,500. Vilna is located in Treaty 6 territory and the village’s Indigenous neighbours

include Whitefish Lake First Nation, Saddle Lake Cree Nation and Kikino Metis Settlement.

Vilna is a 90 minute drive from Edmonton and both the Town of Smoky Lake and the Town of St. Paul are within 30 minutes of Vilna. For the flyers out there the closest airports are St. Paul, Bonnyville, and Edmonton.

Most Scenic Route: Highway 28 rolls through parkland and agricultural land. Also, Highway 15 to Highway 45 and north on Highway 857 to Hwy 652 east and then north on 859 to Vilna is very scenic.

Best Motorcycle Route: Highway 15 to Highway 45 and north on Highway 857 to Hwy 652 east and then north on 859 to Vilna.

Best Family Route: Highway 28 – lots of service points along the way Best Visitor Route: Highway 15 to 45 from Edmonton area, then north on Highway 855 to Metis Crossing on North Saskatchewan River, into Smoky Lake and then east on Highway 28.

Keep your Premises Identification account up to date

“Premises Identification (PID) is a tool used to plan for, control, and prevent the spread of livestock and poultry disease, such as avian influenza or foot and mouth disease, and is crucial for the livestock industry in the event of an animal health incident,” says Dr. Keith Lehman, chief provincial veterinarian with the Alberta government. “The quicker we can locate livestock, the more quickly and accurately we can respond. In fact, PID was used heavily in 2022 to help control the spread of avian influenza and disseminate information to poultry owners in the province and will continue to be an important tool in managing the anticipated spread this spring.”

PID links livestock and poultry to land locations or premises within the PID system. Having accurate animal locations, contact information and other key data in one system is critical for a quick and effective emergency response.

PID can also be used as an early warning system to share information on diseases that

could affect certain species on your premises. This is why it is crucial to have accurate species types listed on your account as these notifications are tailored to the species that would be affected.

“Effective emergency response and the ability to protect your animals depends on accurate information. It is important that you update your PID account when there are changes to your operation (contact information, species, and maximum capacity, etc.) or if you no longer have livestock on your premises. Inaccurate and outdated information can put your animals at risk during an emergency by delaying notification or delivering an incorrect response from emergency responders.”

The following PID account information should be reviewed regularly:

account contact information emergency 24/7 contact information for the premises location of the premises where animals are located (legal land

description or geo-referenced coordinates)

type of premises/operation (for example, farm, abattoir, livestock auction, stable) types of animals raised, kept, displayed, assembled, or disposed of on the premises maximum capacity for each species of animal on the premises

“For those who don’t have a PID account, it is free, simple to apply for and easy to update,” points out Dr. Lehman. “If livestock or poultry are in your care and control, you need to apply for a PID account and obtain at least one PID number. If you operate

a commingling site, such as a boarding stable, community pasture, livestock market, feedlot or fair ground, you are required to obtain a PID account, register all your commingling sites and provide the PID number(s) to the users of your site(s).”

Producers can review and update their information online, or by calling the Premises Identification Program Delivery team at 780-422-9167. Producers can also call 310-FARM for more information.

Insect scouting information at your fingertips

Identify and manage insect pests! Identify and protect beneficial insects!

This unique insect guide links the pests that can damage your crops to the predators that help to control them. You’ll want to access this valuable tool while scouting your fields this season.

Get your copy of the Pests & Predators Field Guide today!

The Field Heroes campaign was developed by the Western Grains Research Foundation to Increase awareness of beneficial insects and the important role they play in pest management. We hope to provide tools for growers and agronomists to identify the most common beneficial insects found across Western Canada.

“Our goal is to increase the likelihood of beneficial insects being considered in production decisions and create a platform for entomologists to share their knowledge with growers and agronomists.”

Trends shaping the grocery industry in 2023

“In 2023, the lingering impact of inflation, the growth of online shopping and the full return of the store shopping experience, will have a significant impact on shaping the grocery industry,” says Jeewani Fernando, provincial consumer market analyst with the Alberta government.

“In 2020 and 2021, health and safety concerns driven by the global pandemic upended the grocery industry. In 2022, the health crisis took a back seat to soaring inflation and prolonged period of supply chain disruptions. While inflation continues to impact consumers, plenty of other trends in the grocery industry may emerge in 2023.”

The latest ‘Trends in retail’, which contains items that analyze developments in the grocery sector, looks at some of these trends in more detail. The trends that this analysis looked at were: impact of inflation on consumer

behaviourial changes and some grocers’ actions (increasingly introduced private label products, shrinkflation and price freeze on selected products) growth of online shopping/ecommerce and delivery in the grocery sector full return of in-person grocery shopping

Grocery price changes are highly important to consumers since they shop so frequently. Combined with the fact that food is one of the most inflationary consumer categories, shoppers are aware of rising prices and are adapting to this new reality. At the same time, grocers have responded in various ways to these changes in consumer behaviour.

“The impact of e-commerce is becoming clearer,” says Fernando. “Rather than replacing grocery store visits, online shopping will supplement in-person shopping. Grocers that integrate the online shopping experience will likely

resonate best with grocery shoppers.”

E-commerce and online grocery purchases were growing in Canada pre-COVID, and this growth accelerated during the pandemic as consumers were

restricted to their homes.

“Canadians are once again shopping in-person more often rather than stocking up and limiting their trips. This highlights one of the fundamentals of the industry: in-person shopping is

not going to disappear. As the industry is built upon habitual and frequent shoppers, the grocers that have the most effective value, quality and convenience offerings will thrive in any environment.”

While grocery retailing is built on fundamentals such as value, quality, convenience and in-person shopping, there are opportunities to differentiate. Specifically, when competing retailers offer similar service, local sourcing can be a way to stand out. Grocers are also using many innovative ways to stay competitive. These include updating their fresh departments and centre store aisles, updating their in-store dining options and introducing new technology like ordering kiosks, smart carts and appfriendly functions.

“Grocers are also investing heavily in new ways of doing business to retain shoppers, grow their business, and help protect their margins,” says Fernando. “New technological innovations are paving the way for a new customer experience, where shoppers can use mobile apps and internet-enabled devices to take advantage of promotions and a more convenient experience.”

Montagneuse 4-H multi-club

The Montagneuse 4-H multi Club has been doing a lot of fun things and has some fun things yet to come. Winter time we had a district Dairy work shop and bowling afternoon, lots of fun and learning. April had us being helping hands wear neon green at the Clear Hills County Trade show.

In April we also got together at a local shop to build tack boxes, which we plan to use in all our future shows. We would like to thank St Isadore CO-OP

for donating all materials for our boxes. In June we also have a district year end wrap up BBQ.

Our Club would like to invite everyone to our North Peace 4-H District Interclub Show and Sale on Monday June 5, 2023. Thank you to all past, and present buyers, sponsors, and supporters, we couldn’t do this without your support.
