I am writing in because I am wondering... is college mandatory to be successful without being an entertainer or coming from a wealthy family? Dream Chaser Dunkin

Dream Chaser Dunkin ,

Let me go ahead and clear the air before I have an angry mob at my door claiming I told their kids not to go to college. I 100% support anybody’s decision to want to go to college. Being a college graduate myself, I do understand that college can open the door to success, but that is not the only door. As a kid I remember thinking that if I did not go to college, I would be a loser. I screamed at the thought of learning a trade or going to a community college when I should have been screaming at the reality of student loan debt. To answer your question, it is important to think about how we define success. For some it is having more money than you can count and hopping out of a Lamborghini, for others it is having a family that loves you, and it also can be a mixture of both. When thinking about success it is important to think about what we want out of life and work towards that. My definition of success and your definition of success might look completely different and that is okay. If I pull up in a Lamborghini that does not mean I, did it right and you need to get like me. That just means I went after what I felt was important to me and you should do the same. Success is a state of mind. Lastly, I want to leave y’all with this, and it may sound like a corny afterschool special, but so be it. My three tips to be successful:

1. Never give up. Things might get hard and your breakthrough may feel like it is never going to come, but your success is right on the other side of your struggle. KEEP GOING.

2. Get better everyday. I do not care what you do, but do something that puts you closer to your dream everyday. Success is not a one-day thing, but it is a build-up of smaller things. Read, write, plan, research, save, as long as you take a step forward.

3. Leave a hater where they stand. If you share your dream of what success is to you with someone and they try to talk you out of it, vote them off the island and then activate tip number 1.

On Thursday President Biden named Karine Jean-Pierre as the new White House press secretary, succeeding Jen Psaki. This makes Jean-Pierre the first Black woman and the first lgbtq+ identifying person to hold the position.

Karine not only brings the experience, talent and integrity needed for this difficult job, but she will continue to lead the way in communicating about the work of the Biden-Harris Administration on behalf of the American people,” the president said in a statement. Jill and I have known and respected Karine a long time and she will be a strong voice speaking for me and this Administration.

Tuesday night Paducah Public School Board of Education met to discuss the renewal of Dr. Donald Shively, current school board superintendent’s contract. His current contract expires on June 30th of this year. This meeting comes after a controversial last 2 years for Dr. Shively following the surfacing of pictures of him wearing a Paducah Tilghman Highschool t-shirt in blackface at a Halloween party in 2020. After a few back and forths from board members it was decided by vote that the board would renew Shively’s contract for an additional 1 year term. Board member, Dr. James Hudson, vice chair, argued in support that renewing for 1 year would provide the board a year to monitor Dr. Shively’s performance.
