In fact, many men use this as a get-out-of-jail free card when it comes to problems that they themselves cause. For example, when I surveyed my fellow staff members and friends, I came across various examples of women being manipulated by men using negative words as a weapon to keep them silenced. In one instance, when a young woman confronted her cheating boyfriend, he told her she was “crazy” and “blowing things out of proportion.” By devaluing the emotions of the victim, often the perpetrators get away with their actions.

That’s why it’s important to remember that your emotions and feelings are valid and that no matter what anyone says, trust yourself. You know yourself best.

However, it is not just men who often use words to keep women down. It’s often women as well. You are doing no one a favor by calling the girl in your math class who enjoys wearing shorts a “slut” or “whore.” Society and media have tricked women into believing that they have to compete with one another. This has created the myth that women can’t really be friends or that they are “catty.” It’s time we do our part and begin to fight against the stereotypes. This begins with us respecting each other. You wouldn’t like being on the receiving end of unwarranted criticism; so don’t give it to another girl—especially one who has not asked. Instead try complimenting her or saying something nice.

I guarantee you, it feels better to brighten up someone’s day than to ruin it.

So about reclaiming the words weaponized against us? Go for it as long as those around you are comfortable with it, remember, boundaries! Let’s fight against the use of words against women and strengthen the respect and love we have for one another.

“What an ugly bitch.” Those words replayed in my head over and over again as the sayer wore a smirk, obviously happy that his words had some effect on me. Although it happened back when I was in high school, this experience has not been unique in its occurrence. In fact, as I navigate my everyday life, I have had to deal with the same offensive language that is often used to demean young women. It comes from everywhere; a rowdy customer who hates waiting, your co-workers, or even your own partner.

Words have become a way to characterize women as dramatic or problematic—and in many cases, both. In my case, when I was quick to respectfully turn down a romantically-interested classmate, I was attacked by being labeled both unlikeable and a bitch, which—although ironic—still stung. In fact, this very characterization is what leads many women to “mellow” their demeanors.

Countless times, classmates have wanted to interject or make suggestions but they don’t; no one wants to be perceived as “bitchy” or “bossy.” Girls have been gaslighted into believing that it is better to be meek and to stay on the sidelines rather than to use their voices and be perceived as domineering.

In fact, pop superstar Taylor Swift has talked about this very problem within the entertainment industry. She points out that her outspoken nature is often seen as a positive for men but her being a woman makes people (men in particular) call her out for being “rude.” In fact, her song “The Man” perfectly puts it into words: “They’d say I played the field before I found someone to commit to And that would be ok / For me to do Every conquest I had made would make me more of a boss to you.”

Being assertive is a privilege that seems to only be given to men. They can brag and be outspoken and are called leaders; meanwhile, women are shamed for the

I truly believe that people follow you not only for your pretty content but also for your personality! It’s important to me that I maintain an honest and real relationship with my followers because these people are the reason I’m able to call this my job!

6. HOW DO YOU HANDLE NEGATIVE FEEDBACK ON SOCIAL MEDIA?

To be honest, I don’t think there is such a thing as “negative feedback” - it’s either constructive criticism which can be built on and channeled to make you a better artist/person, or hate which doesn’t deserve an ounce of your energy.

7. HOW HAS YOUR LIFE CHANGED AFTER BEING ON GLOW UP?

It pushed me as an artist in ways I could never push myself.

Glow Up was literally like my “rebirth” as an artist - it turned me into so much more of a passionate, fearless, and confident artist. And of course, it gave me a platform to meet the most amazing people and work with brands I’ve been obsessed with for years! I’ll forever be grateful!

8. WHAT DOES A TYPICAL DAY LOOK LIKE IN YOUR LIFE?

If I’m not working, most days I get up and clean my kitchen (even if it’s clean, it’s my thing I do to bring me peace in the morning, weird, I know). After that, I’m normally playing with my daughter, watching films, out walking, creating or doing admin stuff. I don’t have a rockstar life at all!

9. WHAT’S YOUR FAVORITE PART OF YOUR JOB?

My favourite part is when you show someone the mirror after you’ve finished their makeup and you see their eyes light up, they stand a little taller and are just ready to slay! That brings me so much joy!

1. HOW DO YOU PRACTICE SELF-CARE DURING THIS TIME OF QUARANTINE?

6. HOW DO YOU HANDLE NEGATIVE FEEDBACK ON SOCIAL MEDIA?

I feel that it is really important to listen to your body and what it needs - my body usually needs fake tan, false nails, and a deep pan pizza! But on a more serious note, I think creatives always struggle with the feeling of guilt when they aren’t being productive, but sometimes you just have to give yourself a day off, sit in your jim jams and watch Netflix.

Honestly, I am so lucky to have very little hate on Instagram. Truthfully, I am one of these people who jokes 24/7 and never rarely says anything serious or takes anything seriously. If I see something that bothers me, I usually delete it right away if I can, then BOOM it’s gone and life is grand! Never go searching through Twitter or Instagram comments because you are only upsetting yourself, and NEVER reply to nasty comments.

2. HOW DO YOU DEFINE THE BEAUTY INDUSTRY NOW WITH SOCIETY AND SOCIAL MEDIA?

Listen there are people who say “social media is such a negative space”, and, like in real life, it is all about who you surround yourself with. Social media has revolutionised the beauty industry, it has given everyone the platform to express themselves freely, and it is beautiful.

3. WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE GO-TO PRODUCT?

I cannot simply just pick one, but honestly, I always think “If I’m going into the jungle, what would be my luxury item?” and it would have to be pink hair dye. I am very attached to my hair (physically and emotionally!)

4. WHAT WAS BEING ON THE TV SHOW GLOW UP LIKE?

Imagine getting every emotion known to man, putting it into Shakira’s hips, then playing “Hips Don’t Lie” on repeat for eight weeks, 18 hours a day. It was a rollercoaster!

Now that it’s all over, I have realised I learned a lot about myself, and it helped me grow as a person. I told myself that no matter what, I could only do the best in that moment, and I should be proud no matter what.

7. HOW HAS YOUR LIFE CHANGED AFTER BEING ON GLOW UP?

I get asked this a lot and it always surprises me. I think people have the illusion that once you go on TV, you are rich and life is amazing. My life really is the same. What has changed is the way I see myself. I have learned who I am, I have found myself and my confidence, and that is priceless.

8. WHAT DOES A TYPICAL DAY LOOK LIKE IN YOUR LIFE?

I’m so boring and I actually am proud of that — I love it! If it is a social media work day, I usually get up, go for a walk, then lock myself in my makeup room with some snacks and get creating! I also work in a salon, but we have been closed a lot due to lockdowns.

10. WHAT’S YOUR FAVORITE PART OF YOUR JOB?

I suppose I have two jobs: a professional makeup artist (MUA) and an Instagram MUA. I love going to work, socialising with clients, working with creative people like photographers and stylists, doing shoots and seeing a final image come together.

Through an undeniable connection to each other and their awareness to a deeper meaning of what it means to be alive, these women are creating works of art infused with healing modalities through music.

Here at The Naked Magazine, our founder, Sarah Neely, had the privilege, honor, and absolute joy to sit down with the up and coming phenomenal group: AKA, Love. The two members of the group, Aryee Jackson (left) and Kayla Whitner (right), delved into all things music, fashion, health, and wellness. We think you will find this interview raw, inspiring, and informative. So, let’s dive right in!

SARAH: WHY DO YOU CALL YOURSELVES AKA, LOVE?

In meeting Ary I was like, “Whoa, ARYEE: Jhené Aiko, Lauryn Hill, Erykah Badu, wow!” She was comfortable singing and made SZA, Willow Smith, Jaden Smith. Really a lot of

neo-soul, and raw music that you feel in your soul.

KAYLA: I agree with all those artists as well. I would also add Nina Simone, Frank Sinatra, Amy Winehouse, Louis Armstrong. I love jazz. Jazz is my favorite genre of music. All the instruments, especially the saxophone. Adele, Billie Holiday, and Alicia Keys. Those women resonated with me because they also have deeper voices. We do get a little wild sometimes and turn on City Girls, Meg the Stallion, Drake and DaBaby.

SARAH: WHAT GENRE IS YOUR MUSIC?

AKA, LOVE: We are genre benders. It depends on our mood and the project. We can channel anything. Our most recent project is more of an R&B, hip-hop, urban feel. We made a song to pay homage to a protestor in Tallahassee and it is pretty heavy. Someone once told us the song sounded like honey, and we love that because that situation is definitely not honey at all. The way we present it though, in a way, is like medicine. So that is our genre, medicine. We make medicinal frequencies.

SARAH: DESCRIBE YOUR MUSIC IN THREE WORDS.

KAYLA: Innovative, Determination, Love.

AKA, LOVE: This project is very diverse, very broad, and it beautifully encompasses our personalities and the type of music we are capable of creating. It embodies everything we have experienced in this past year, and those experiences will be captured in this work. Ranging from emotional, social, and cultural experiences. It is a reflection of us, and the times right now. It feels very forward thinking. We are creating a new narrative, love centered and rooted in positivity.

SARAH: DO YOU ALL HAVE A NAME FOR THE EP?

AKA, LOVE: We had an album name in mind, but it has evolved over time, so we are still in that discussion. Initially, it was named – “I.D.” as in our stamp, our brand. It was us saying, “this is who we are as an artist” or “a part of who we are; our Identity.”

SARAH: OKAY, THAT IS COOL. SO, DO YOU HAVE ANYTHING COMING UP?

ARYEE: We have our listening party, and I am also doing a small group mass healing session and reiki session with women who wanted to book our services.

SARAH: That is amazing!

SARAH: HOW DO YOU ALL THINK THE INTERNET HAS INFLUENCED THE MUSIC INDUSTRY?

ARYEE: I think the Internet has really changed the game in a great way. It allows people to be connected from all over the world. To experience different forms of music that amplifies how you can be creative, and not just in one way. You can be creative and truly create something true to you.

KAYLA: It unfolded so funny. We like to intertwine healing and arts. We recently did this event called, Earth, at the West End Park in Atlanta. I did a reiki meditation session, then we went and did a sound healing with our music. It was very cool.

YOU SEE MUSIC?

AKA, LOVE: We see us being a major force that opens eyes, ears, spirits, and consciousness.

We have the capacity, the vision, and everything we need in this moment. We are just in the process. We’re both fans of 90s music so we can be a vessel in the rebirth of bringing back greatness.

Returning back to love, back to storytelling, back to a more relatable sound that resonates on a heart level.

SARAH: WHAT DO YOU DO WHEN YOU AREN’T CREATING MUSIC, OR OTHER THINGS YOU’RE PASSIONATE ABOUT?

KAYLA: I’m a visual artist, as well, so I draw and paint. I love doing that. I also work in the film industry in Atlanta. I do paintings for different businesses. I’m working at a spa right now, so I’m like their “on-call” artist. Ary and I are in there so much because we do bartering; so, I get to go in there whenever I want, and they just let me know what they need me to paint for them. It’s super fun, so even outside of music I feel we have a creative community. We love fashion, [we] love to have days where we go thrifting, we love to dance and cook.

ARYEE: I do guided meditation sessions, reiki healing, I make jewelry that is also infused with healing energy, and I love, love make-up.

SARAH: WHAT CAN WE EXPECT FROM YOU ALL IN THE YEAR 2021?

AKA, LOVE: New music, new visuals, earth-shaking, prolific, forward-thinking content. We will be holding sacred spaces to share intimate conversations and get to know people on a deeper level. We want to share our gifts and create a community of people who are about wellness on a physical, mental, and spiritual level. Expansion.

SARAH: Yes, I love it and I can already see it. I’m inspired. You all have taught me so much, I am just soaking it all in.

SARAH: HOW DO YOU BALANCE BEING A MUSICIAN AND EVERYTHING ELSE?

AKA, LOVE: We have to practice patience. We have to not rush anything. With everything that happened with the Balance visual, it’s like we aren’t on our time, we are on borrowed time, borrowed energy, so that we are expressing this life. It’s really being a witness, becoming so unattached to the outcome that you allow the blessings to really come in. And the balance comes when you do what you love, but not all the time. There are periods of stagnation, but we don’t create when we don’t feel inspired. That Is also what makes our music so authentic, and we trust our product, our fruit. We can say, “Okay, let the music rest,” and do our own thing for a while so when we do come back together, we are reinvigorated.

As a college student, it’s almost impossible to stay fashionable without balling out and breaking the budget.

I know places like SHEIN and other online shops are cheap, but what’s the real cost? Fast fashion is the industry that produces season after season of cheaper items in massive amounts—think Forever 21 or Fashion Nova.

It’s nice to have those resources available but knowing the true cost makes them harder to swallow. While it’s convenient for consumers, it also comes with a bigger price tag than you think.

The environmental impact of fast fashion has finally been brought to light in recent years. Leftover materials from past seasons usually end up in landfills; vast amounts of fossil fuels are required to produce polyester. These two things alone are speeding up the steady demise of the planet. The waste produced is becoming a greater problem. The resources used to pump out the massive amounts of seasons and options for our consumption aren’t being replaced quickly enough. This will inevitably lead to a shortage of resources and a surplus of waste on our planet. I’m not trying to scare you, I promise, but we should all be concerned. There are plenty of small ways that you can make a big difference and still be fashionable.

If you want to make a change but you don’t want to give up your fashion sense or break the bank, thrifting is a great option for you. Thrifting means going through secondhand clothing stores and finding pieces you like and can use every day. Shopping in secondhand stores is inexpensive and you can still find pieces you love there!

It’s basically like shopping in your sibling’s closet, but you actually have to pay this time. It’s sometimes messy and a little overwhelming, but it’s so rewarding finding something you love for such a great price. Going secondhand also has a ton of positive environmental effects, such as reducing landfill waste and minimizing the number of resources used. I think it’s a win-win situation because both the environment and your wallet are happy. I know thrifting can be a little bit more time consuming but trust me—in the long run you’ll be thanking me.

If you do plan on going thrifting, I have a few tips to keep in mind to be polite in the secondhand world. First, around fall and wintertime, it’s best to steer clear of the jackets and sweaters because there might be people in the area who truly can’t afford anything else, so it’s considerate to leave them options. This is something to keep in mind since some people don’t have the luxury of shopping firsthand. Secondly, make sure to donate when and if you can! This helps add to the secondhand store market and only makes it grow bigger. If you only buy and never give back to the circle of secondhand, the reach of thrifting will sadly shrink. Lastly, if it doesn’t fit right away it can always be altered. You can sew it yourself or take it in to a tailor. This is a big one since almost every piece in a secondhand store is unique; if you love it but it just doesn’t fit right, try to make it your own OG piece!

Are you a current college student who doesn’t know where the heck to start when it comes to money management? Hell, managing time is hard enough, how are we supposed to track our spending too? No need to fear though! The financial transition into college is a struggle for many of us, and it is completely normal!

This new life venture can be expensive, and that’s why it is so important to be careful with our money, but we also need to enjoy the experiences as much as we can. As a sophomore in college, I’ve learned quite a few steps that really helped me out in my transition, and they may be able to help you too.

The first step is to create a budget. I’m sure you hear this all the time, but it really helps in relieving (and avoiding) those particularly stressful moments.

First off, it’s important to know whether you or a parent are paying the tuition. For me, my mom pays for my education, but since she covers the bulk of the cost, I try my best to cover everything else like textbooks, flights home, and leisure activities like eating out. If you have an on-campus job, that money could go towards those things, and if you have a little left over, you can always try to pitch in to help your parents out. On the other hand, if you don’t have a parent helping, be very mindful in splitting your paychecks. I would recommend half of the paycheck being for anything school related, while the other half can cover emergency expenses or savings. Though I do understand that this could also be difficult if you’re a single parent for example. That’s where reaching out to other family members comes in.

come with a whirlwind of emotions, and you may feel that you have to be independent since you’re older and on your own. That’s not true at all. If you’re like me, you may also feel like a burden anytime you ask for help, but this is also not true. Your family is more than likely proud of you for getting an education, so don’t be afraid to ask for help from grandparents, aunts, or cousins when you’re struggling. They’re family, and they’re there to help support you the best they can.

This goes for my single moms out there as well! Raising a child, going to school, and having a job is not an easy feat for one person, but with that familial support, you will eventually find ways to balance out that schedule.

You could also find a side hustle by turning your hobbies into money-makers. For example, selling class notes or selling a service. I do freelance photography as an art student, and it’s been a great help in making money when I can catch a break. The possibilities are endless, and there’s always a way around the obstacles.

The last point I want to make pertains to holidays, birthdays, and those times for gift-giving. Valentine’s day is coming up, but if you’re also paying for school, it’s important to know that you don’t have to go all out this year. Whether it’s for your significant other, child, or family member, it’s time to get creative! Handmade gifts are often more meaningful than trying to be really lavish. It’s also key that you don’t get too much for a young child because there may be times in the future when you don’t “have it all” and you want to avoid making them expect something at all times. The best thing to remember is this: it’s okay to not “have it all.” Make a budget, reach out for help when you need it, and do what you can! With these steps, your financial stress should begin to fade away.

Real women, real bodies. What does that mean exactly? Well, we come as we are—it’s as simple as that. Some of us are skinny, some of us are considered plus size, and there are all sorts of nuances in between.

Basically it means that the next time you feel compelled to tell someone to ‘eat a sandwich,’ or comment on their heavy weight, don’t. Real women understand that in real life there’s no airbrushing cellulite.

They also know that real bodies are not cardboard copies of whatever outgoing fad we’re into at the moment.

Let me preface this next point by saying, I have the luxury of having had a fixed size my whole life. I know that’s not the case for everyone, but more than that I know that body dysmorphia doesn’t care what size you are. I may have always been skinny, but that’s not what I credit for my healthy state of mind. I have the privilege of having been raised by a mother who only ever complimented my body, a grandmother who always reminded me that I was fine the way I looked, and even a father who never shamed me for how I looked in a bikini (nor for wearing one to begin with). Bottom line is, bodies aren’t meant to be shamed, they’re meant to be taken care of. You’re not gonna shame anyone into practicing healthy lifestyle and dietary habits, I can tell you that much.

Now, let me tell you about a good friend of mine. She started off the new year with a work-out journal. She proudly showed off to me the notebook she’d bought and filled with hand-drawn diagrams of her exercise routine and water intake for the next several months. In between those diagrams, she even drew motivational quotes in giant swirly letters. I’m sure this is only one of several tactics she’s come up with to lose weight over the years. She has been struggling to reach her goal weight for a long time. However, not ONCE have I heard her make derogatory remarks toward the body that she has and has always had. For as long as I’ve known her, she’s never considered herself to be any less beautiful because of the fat in her gut. Now, I don’t know what thoughts of insecurity might float through her mind when she’s presenting this picture of confidence to me. What I do know is that those insecure thoughts have less weight than the sense of self her mother fostered in her in all 20+ years of her life. When we become flooded with the latest media frenzy of perfectly toned Instagram models, we need the voice of a woman who endured her journey before us, to remind us that those picturesque bodies have been claimed by their owners. We don’t need to be trying to imitate them when we have beautiful bodies of our own right here. A healthy body image is not, and should not be exclusive to the modelesque figures of our generation.

Real women, real bodies. It means that my mother birthed me this way, that your mother birthed you to look that way, and my friend’s mother birthed her in her shape and form. What we do with what we’ve got is up to us, but the body I was given is not more or less real than yours, and vice versa. It’s not about being a specific size, it’s about taking care of your size. If you’re a mother, or plan to be one, I plead to you: raise your child to appreciate the form they come in. So that when they’re exposed to the demeaning commentators and toxic media, they are able to separate themselves from that toxicity. It’s easy to feel cooped up at home and at the beginning of quarantine, I would spend multiple days in a row without leaving home. Now I make a conscious effort to at least go on a walk in the mornings. I feel much better now that I have created a routine for myself!

2. I make sure to see each of their beautiful faces every day on Snapchat or other social media platforms.

That way I can at least know that they are safe and healthy despite the circumstances. I make sure to check in by video calling my friends once a week to chat about any updates in our lives. Occasionally, we’ll hold a group call while simultaneously watching the same move. It’s so much fun!

Gym closures have significantly affected my workout routine, so at the moment I’m just doing some yoga at home to both keep myself in shape and to clear my mind.

Out of everything, my relationships have been most significantly impacted by the pandemic as I’ve since moved back to the United States from abroad.

I like to keep in touch with my friends by reaching out through phone calls and texts, and we will schedule group calls schedules permitting as well.

Victoria Liverpool It has definitely been a rollercoaster. Most days are great and I’m so thankful that I have my family and

we’re all in good health. My morning routine and nighttime yoga give me a reality check every day because it’s so easy to get lost in everything that’s happening.

I talk to my friends at least once a day through our group chat. We lived together all semester so it has been weird adjusting to life at home without being able to walk down the hall to talk to someone.

Adrianne Morales I’m doing what I want to do. If I want to eat a pizza, I let myself. If I want to skip a workout, I let myself. If I want to do my makeup for no reason, I let myself.

This is a tough time for everyone and I think allowing us to do what we want to do just helps us feel even just a little bit better. We have to make the best out of the worst even in the littlest situations, even if it’s just allowing yourself the cookie you wouldn’t usually eat.

Little wins :) We’re still seeing each other! We’re just getting tested regularly to keep each other safe. My best friend lives with her grandma and I live with my asthmatic mom so we’re not doing anything we feel is irresponsible. We text every day and if we want to meet up for a brunch at home, we’ll get tested before.

My girlfriends and I have “conference meetings” every week. We have FaceTime calls at least once a week to stay in touch and to make sure we know what is going on in each other’s lives. I make sure to stay supportive and motivating to help get my friends out of their low points and to keep working hard towards their goals.

Quarantine has totally forced me to slow down — I looked at my Google Calendar from exactly a month ago and I was so, so busy — but even with all this time on my hands I still have unproductive days. 2. Quarantine has brought my girl friends and I even closer since we’ve been forced to find creative ways to stay in touch and keep tabs on each other’s lives.

I’ve had some of the deepest, most insightful (and some of the longest) conversations I’ve ever had with them especially considering all of the changes our world is going through right now. Definitely make an effort to reach out to friendships you know you want to maintain in your life.

A: Yes, thank you! There are so many ways to work on your soul; techniques and schools, try some of them. And choose one or two and do it every day until it is a part of you. Each one of us creates our own world that we live every day, we have the power to do it. You are doing it now, unconsciously most probably, but you are creating every minute of your life. It is easy to blame our parents, the government, our teacher…stop there. Get conscious and start creating a world for you and your beloved ones.

Q: You are a very motivated person with a healthy attitude, I’ve always admired that about you. What keeps you focused on your goals?

A: I truly believe that we were born in this world (dimension) to learn, improve ourselves and leave a better example legacy to our own family. It is nice to get physical rewards and motivation but that will vanish our real goal, which is to work on our soul, inner person, spirit, whatever you want to name it; to collect our spiritual reward. Even if you do not believe in reincarnation, you can collect your reward in this life. When you work on yourself you are capable to deeply connect to other’s spirits and that changes you and them.

We are one. You are me, and I am you.

Q: What inspires you the most about your meditative lifestyle as a kundalini yogi and teaching others?

A: Before I started to practice kundalini, I was in a very bad place. I almost sabotaged myself and lost everything. After starting to practice kundalini, I feel great, I start little by little two days per week and before a year of practicing I signed up for teaching training that changed my life 180 degrees. I did not change my job or move to another city; I am in the same place but I see and feel all things differently.

As a result, I improve my relationships, my status, and my knowledge. I love to provide tools to all people so that they can know themselves better, have confidence in themselves, and live in the flow of life instead of against it—to live in their highest Self. I’m sure we will get there in the next decades.

More and more, people acknowledge themselves and live by that.

Q: I know that your professional life can be very demanding as well, how do you balance this and work through the stress?

A: I stopped controlling each decision, processes, and persons. I do my best in every task every day.

I set time and prioritize tasks. I analyze the whole process and the possible troubles and misunderstandings that can come up, the common mistakes and prevent as much as possible. I listen and figure out what the person really wants and definitely follow my instinct. I focus to work my complete hours, concentrate, and get done as much as possible so after getting off work I can dedicate my time to doing other stuff.

Q: How do you mentally shake off a stressful moment at work, with family, etc.?

A: Breathing… breathing is a powerful tool to switch your mental state another, to change pattern and to get healthy. Breathing consciously is all you need.

Q: What is a “must do” daily or nearly daily activity that you do for yourself to help prevent burnout?

A: Meditation every day to relax my mind and clean it up. As humans, we love to go over and over situations or conversations that did not go as we desired. And that burns a lot of our energy. Meditation helps me to break this pattern and cleans my mind every day. Do you like to live in a clean house? How often do you clean your house? I am sure that every day you do something to keep it neat. What about your mind? How do you clean your mind? Meditating, starting at three minutes per day, then five, and then building to a routine of at least eleven minutes per day. Look for a meditation that suits you, there are plenty of options. For my body, I get a relaxing

Ten years ago, I never thought that I, a black gurl from Starkville, MS would have an all female company and be launching a women’s magazine. Back then, I was content to be a part of someone else’s dream. Last year during the most trying time of our lives I decided to do something bigger than myself by starting Sarah Neely’s Production Company- to provide women with opportunities and to help build, strengthen, motivate, support, and uplift other women in the process whether or not they had prior experience.

I started out Summer 2020 with no idea of what what having a company really entailed, despite how much research I had done and how many books I had read to truly prepare me for it. It was not easy — overseeing anything comes with it challenges —mbut I still wouldn’t give up. Throughout the hiring and production process, I have met some of the best gurls ever by looking at them through a computer screen, as our operations are still strictly remote. Of course I had my challenges as well but hey — that’s life (we’ll talk about that some other day!). I learned a lot about myself and that’s because of these amazing, smart, beautiful, and fun gurls that God has placed in my path; they believe in my vision and know that It will take time, but it will work. I have learned that even though I’m the owner of the company, I am just like them; they’ve showed ownership in this project as well-teaching me the things I did not know and showing me that they have my back-even though I thought I could do it all by myself. In truth, I did not know anything about running a company or having a staff of over twenty-five women (that shit still amazes me!). I thank each of the gurls from both Summer and Fall term for believing in Naked magazine and being patient with me, while I was learning with you as well. You gals are the true MVPs and I am so grateful to have met each and every one of you. You have helped make Naked Magazine bigger than I envisioned-from your ideas and experiences to your constructive criticism-without you this magazine would not be where it is now.

I want to thank my family, my fiancé, Joseph, and my two amazing children, Dakota and Zayden. Thank you for putting up with the late nights when I wasn’t able to have much quality time with you all. Thank you for uplifting me when I feel like giving up. Thank you for loving me unconditionally even when I am acting out of character. Thank you for believing in me when I do not believe in myself. Thank you for knowing when to step up before I even have to ask. Thank you for not complaining when I forget things or when I go into a daze mid conversation. I love you all and I am truly blessed to have such an amazing family.
