Brody Wilson’s Life

Honored

He was level-headed and was many times the voice of reason in his friend groups. He was known as a brother to all, and would try to include whoever was around him and especially included younger kids in activities.

STEVE WILSON rody Wilson was the kind of person Tara Glasgow was thrilled her son Avery had found a friend in.

“My son said he would cheer you up if you were feeling down. He was always kind,” Tara said. “He was smart and athletic. He was positive, friendly and fun. He was always smiling.

“WHEN I THINK OF BRODY, I THINK OF HIM SMILING." Tara wasn’t alone. Whether it was in his church youth groups, travel soccer teams, or one of his many performances in school and area theatre, Brody exuded kindness to those around him. Tragically though in June, Brody passed away at the age of 15.

In searching for a way to honor Brody’s life, a teacher at Williamsville High School suggested that Glasgow contact the Community Foundation.

After she, her husband Duane, and Brody’s family explored what was possible, they decided to establish a

scholarship in his memory, the Brody Wilson Memorial Scholarship.

It only seemed right. Brody was the kind of person who reached out to others in need, proactively helping those around him and was curious to keep expanding his horizons – there were plenty of conversations with his dad, Steve, about his mission trips to Brazil and how Brody could join him one day as well.

“Brody was a young man on the move, always wanting to try new things and take on new adventures,” Steve said.

“He was a hard worker, getting straight As. He never shied away from hard work, like corn detassling and getting up at 5 in the morning in time to get ready to work for the day in any kind of weather, never complaining.”

Creating a scholarship to help Williamsville seniors continue on to higher education and set a foundation for their future was a natural fit to honor Brody.

“He loved hanging out with people, and would sometimes want to hang out with groups of friends for days on end,” Steve said. “He was levelheaded and was many times the voice of reason in his friend groups. He was known as a brother to all, and would try to include whoever was around him and especially included younger kids in activities.”

The scholarship will celebrate two of Brody’s great loves by putting an emphasis on those who are passionate about the arts and soccer.

The amount of fondness that Brody inspired has been felt in the last few months as the community rallied together to start the scholarship.

“It is quite amazing that people have locked arms with us,” Steve said.

“Nothing takes the pain of loss away, but the love and support that has been shown to us through this has simply been amazing!”

Like other COVID-19 Response Funds that were established in communities across the nation, the one established at the Community Foundation in partnership with the United Way of Central Illinois focused on supporting frontline workers and basic needs that included food, emergency supplies, utility and financial assistance, and support for children and vulnerable populations.

But the Community Foundation remained keenly aware of the broad impact of the pandemic, and when there was a chance to help our nonprofit partners in the arts, the call was sent out.

Thanks to local donors, including the Hanson Family Fund, the H. D. Smith Foundation and more, $40,000 was raised for local arts organizations’ general operations through the newly-established Arts for Illinois Relief Fund. And through a match opportunity with Arts Alliance Illinois, an additional $20,000 was infused into the Fund.

Recipients of Arts for Illinois Relief Fund grants were the Hoogland Center for the Arts, Springfield Area Arts Council, Illinois Symphony Orchestra, Springfield Art Association of Edwards Place, Springfield Ballet Company, and The Pharmacy Gallery & Art Space, Inc.

THERE IS STILL TIME TO JOIN! GIVING CIRCLES ARE ONE OF THE FASTEST GROWING FORMS OF PHILANTHROPY, AND FOR GOOD REASON. THEY PROVIDE A SENSE OF COMMUNITY WHILE DELIVERING GREATER IMPACT TO THE PRESSING NEEDS YOU SEE IN YOUR COMMUNITY. Members of Women for Women and Young Philanthropists each contribute an annual donation – 100 percent of which goes toward the respective endowment fund at the Community Foundation through which annual grants are made.

Women for Women brings together like-minded individuals who make “giving back” a part of their lives through compassion, knowledge, friendship, and philanthropy. More than $375,000 has been awarded through The Women’s Fund to innovative, collaborative nonprofit organizations that are helping improve the lives of local women and children.

Young Philanthropists invigorates community leaders to join together to be philanthropists and to learn more about themselves as donors. More than $112,000 has been awarded from the Future Fund to organizations addressing childhood development and education.

Anyone over the age of 21 and ‘young at heart’ is welcome to join, and new members are welcome at any time.

Women from all generations and backgrounds are welcome to join the giving circle and experience the power of community philanthropy.
