Climate change

D

espite there still being a minority of people who believe climate change does not exist, the deterioration of the earth’s environment is proven valid through scientific research. People on various social media platforms such as Twitter have taken note of this and have begun using their accounts in such a way as to raise awareness and push for change that would suit the environment.

For some people, climate change is not always actively thought about as a crisis with impending consequences.

According to an article from Conserving a Changing climate, one of the greatest challenges with climate change is its intangibility- the scope is just too large to grasp.

“It is difficult for many to relate to the problem of climate change because they are either unaware or unaffected by the negative effects,” biology teacher Jerry Epp said.

While the effects of climate change are not seen often in everyday life, that does not mean that there are not notable and harmful effects that one cannot see. The Climate Change Reality Project said climate change is bad for our health, bad for our consumable water security, and bad for our economy.

“Climate change is likely the most serious, long-term challenge facing humans. Unlike global issues such as disease or political instability,” Epp said.

Another aspect of climate change that is not actively seen with the human eye is the depletion of ozone and the ozone layer. The ozone layer is a layer of molecules of ozone (three atoms of oxygen chained together) that protects life on earth from most harmful Ultra Violet (UV) light and energy. Getting rid of the ozone layer would be very hazardous to humans.

“Ozone can be found both in the upper atmosphere and at ground level. It forms a relatively thin layer of gas in the upper atmosphere (stratosphere). It protects life on earth by absorbing much of the ultraviolet radiation from the sun,” Epp said. “Greenhouse gas and nitrous oxide can damage the ozone layer. Ground level ozone is a relatively short-lived greenhouse gas that can cause more localized warming.”

In 2019, Twitter was the most commonly used social media platform used to raise awareness and talk about

the environment. Last year also set a record for internet interactions regarding climate change with 132 million engagements to articles focused on climate change in 2019, according to a study from NewsWhip. For example, a CNN article regarding the Amazon Rainforest fires received nearly 1.4 million interactions on various social media platforms.

“I don’t know how much value social media has on the issue of climate change. In my experience, people tend to use social media in a way that reinforces their preexisting beliefs,” Epp said.

A common critique of these social media users attempting to spread information regarding the environment is that it is not substantial enough. However, environment club founder sophomore Madeline Duncan disagrees, stating that raising awareness can prompt change.

“Just saying ‘Save the environment’ isn’t gonna do anything,” Duncan said.

“But, if you say save the environment and somebody who has the power to actually make a change sees that and then does something, I think that’s what matters.”

While the effects of climate change can be seen worldwide, some believe it is important to not to forget about the environment on a local scale. Environment club is making attempts to combat climate change at the high school.

“Our current goals are to try and make the school more green and maybe get some like native flowers so pollinators can come and kind of try and rebuild the natural ecosystem around the school,” Duncan said.

ince 1988, after congress designated the month of March as Women’s history month in 1987, thousands of people throughout the United States celebrate. One goal of Women’s History Month is to highlight the contributions of women in history as well as encourage celebrations as a way to promote equality among the sexes.

In recent years, a popular subject of the media are the large amounts of petition and protest for equal rights.

Women’s History Month is a month set aside to honor women’s contributions in American history. Women’s History Month originated following the first International Women’s day hosted in 1911. Former President Jimmy Carter then issued a presidential proclamation declaring the week of March 8 National Women’s History Week in February 1980.

“There’s always room for improvement,” junior Tessa Preheim said. “There’s always something that could be a little bit better but [women’s rights] have definitely come a long way.”

Since 1919 when women earned the right to vote, great strides have been made concerning rights available to women. However, over 100 years later, students still express that there are still great flaws that need to be solved concerning women’s rights, a primary issue concerning equal wages.

“Women and men still don’t have equal rights because women are not paid the same as men and we definitely aren’t respected in the political world

These marches vary in relation to the Trump impeachment, police brutality and the women’s march.

the same as men,” freshman Ellie Harder said.

Students such as freshman Neva Dorado express that along with equal wages, she would like to see the observance of males to females become more coherent.

Dorado said, in her opinion, sometimes women and men receive different reactions when they do the same exact thing and that this is something she would like to see change.

“I think people are just getting used to the fact that women can do the same things as men, and respecting that,” freshman Eliza Epp said. “Knowing that women are just as capable as men and also remembering that there’s really no difference.”

Another stereotype surrounds the word ‘feminist.’ The Oxford dictionary defines ‘feminism’ as the advocacy of women’s rights on the basis of the equality of the sexes.

Generation Z, referring to those born

between 1997 and 2012, appears to have taken the word ‘feminist’ and used it for slander.

“Most people assume that feminism is the idea of lowering men and that women should be higher than them or that men should just drop to the level that women are at, but I feel like we should always be raising everyone up,” sophomore Ember Suter said The 2020 Women’s History Month theme is “Valiant Women of the Vote.” This theme is meant to honor the women who fought and continue to fight for the voting rights of others while simultaneously encouraging our current youth to be valiant.

“I think being a woman is just showing your personality and creativity, through yourself and being unique and not tearing down other women because there’s already enough of that, making sure you’re uplifting and encouraging to others,” senior Becca Meyer said.

The women’s march kicked off Jan. 21, 2017 (the day after Trump’s inauguration) and is known as the largest single day protest in U.S. history. The women’s march reoccurs annually at the end of January and advocates for subjects such as women’s rights, reproductive rights, and LGBTQ+ rights. The ‘flagship’ march is located in Washington D.C., however related marches take place elsewhere.

“I think it’s important to attend marches because I think people really like seeing numbers,” freshman Ava Olson said. “The more people that show up to things, shows that more people support the cause.”

Freshman Ellie Harder attends the women’s march located in Wichita, KS, annually and has attended a variety of pride parades throughout Kansas. Harder said marches are not only fun, but a place to be accepted and to enjoy yourself.

“The march was great because it really brought women and people of different sexualities and different orientations together,” Harder said. “I think it’s nice to be somewhere where you can feel safe and feel accepted and loved by the people around you.”

Harder creates her own posters for the marches she attends, however they are not a requirement. Freshmen Eliza Epp, Lindsey Warsnak and Preslee Ellette also made posters and wore rainbow colored clothing when they attended LGBTQ+ marches.

“It’s kind of like a big parade,” freshman Lindsey Warsnak said. “I met a lot of new people and they were all super nice and it’s really fun.”

Epp says that her mom has always been very interested in marches and that this has contributed to her presence at them. Epp invites friends along with her when attending and said that it is nice knowing that these are issues that more people than just yourself care about.

“Marches are really fun. I think they’re not as big of a deal or as intimidating as they can seem,” Epp said. “Just try and find a group of people that also want to be there and are excited too and it’ll be fun.”

A

s a child, many have all heard the typical phrases from our parents and teachers: say please and thank you, eat your veggies and treat others the way you want to be treated. However, as we grow older and become young adults, we see many people, regardless of age, who are treated poorly due to their skin complexion.

From a survey of students, 63.8 percent at NHS never experienced a racist act.

However, that does not mean it does not happen.

For some students, they experience it almost every day.

“It’s [being the victim of racism] very frustrating. I know it won’t be the last time and it’s only going to happen more,” junior Xzavion Martin said. “I feel like it’s not going to get better, only worse.”

In light of discriminatory acts, not just in recent media, but in the school halls as well, Students for Racial Justice (SRJ) made a space within their club where students, including people of color (POC), can come and feel welcomed.

“SRJ is created to spread awareness to being an ally and an advocate for anti-racism,” German teacher and SRJ sponsor Nan Bergen said. “I want them to feel supported and that they can make a difference.”

Due to the size of the school and crowded hallways during passing period, many people, including those that are not of color, hear the racist comments made.

“It makes me feel uncomfortable when

I hear people say something racist,” junior Jayden Smith said. “There’s better words to use than slander or derogatory terms just about a person’s skin complexion.”

Along with students hearing these comments, some counselors and administration recognize this problem throughout the building.

“One thing that is really surprising and gross to me is how often I hear the ‘n-word’ like that’s insane in 2020 to be in a public school and hear the ‘n-word.’

I’m flabbergasted,” social worker Joanna Bjerum said. “In order to fix a problem you have to talk about the problem and I feel like racism is still a problem that people don’t want to talk about.”

In order to raise awareness of discriminatory acts against POC, February is recognized as Black History Month to honor the triumphs and struggles of African Americans throughout history.

“It’s just an opportunity and a time to remember those who opened the doors for the colored community and who inspire the color community to exceed expectations,” junior Alaijah Stokes said. “Black History Month is a time to reflect and dwell on our past and how far we’ve come and how we have grown, not just in the colored community, but as people too.”

Many POC, including sophomore Alexis Epp, are empowered by black history month because it gives them a sense of pride.

“Embrace your color and don’t let other people make you feel ashamed for it,” Epp said.

It makes me feel horrible that this is still going on. It’s 2020, I mean get over yourself, no skin color is better than the other; we’re all the same.

I really don’t care at all, I know others can be affected by it, but most people here don’t think twice about it. It would be really hard [to take action] because so many people that do it.

Private school too expensive

B

efore sending their children to school, parents may discuss the option of attending private or public schools; but for most, private school is not a feasible option due to the high cost of tuition. Students should not have to sacrifice receiving a quality education within a safe learning environment just because private schools are so expensive, not allowing middle class families to send their students to a private school.

Unlike public schools, private schools are not government funded, so they rely on enrollment fees for funding.

Unfortunately for parents who wish to send their students to private school, this means that they are required to pay a large sum of money for enrollment.

The National Bureau of Economic Research conducted a study and found that 7 percent of middle class citizens and only 4 percent of families whose income is in the 20th percentile send their children to private school.

With higher test scores, private schools are typically viewed as superior to public schools. Fatherly.com states that ACT test scores from private

schools range 3.1 points higher on average than public school ACT scores.

Additionally, according to smabrears. org, private schools also do not take state-wide testing, so their curriculum can be focused around learning rather than memorizing, or teaching toward the test.

Another reason private schools are seen to have a better learning environment is because they are less overcrowded than public schools, which can hold 20-30 students in just one classroom. With fewer students in a classroom, there is less of a chance for learning disruptions.

Private schools are a common direction taken when parents are interested in teaching their students academic learning alongside religious learning. As public schools are not allowed to teach subjects surrounding religion, private schools target such forms of teaching. For example, St. Marys students are required to take a religion class every year and pass, they will attend mass at eight in the morning, say a prayer before every class period and before and after they ate.

According to factsmgt.com, over the last 50 years, middle class families were forced to withdraw their children from public school due to the country’s income along with the rise

in private school tuition. Parents who could previously afford private school education for their children now have to send them to a lower cost public school. Although students who go to public school are still just as capable as private school students, independent schools offer more opportunities.

Collegretransitions.com states that roughly 95 percent of private school students attend a four-year university after high school, compared to the 49 percent of public school students.

It is never necessary to go to a four year university, but if that is your goal after high school it may be harder to accomplish if you attend public school rather than private school.

If private schools continue to ask for so much money for enrollment, middle class families will never be given the opportunities to receive an elite education or send their child to the school they want. It is a classic battle of socioeconomic statuses between lower class, middle class, and upper class citizens, where families with more money are offered better opportunities for a large sum of their income. I believe that the best way to fix this is to lower private school tuition cost to allow middle-class families to enroll their students in the school of their choice, without the worry of breaking the bank.

A

lthough thrifting has been around since the early 1920â&#x20AC;&#x2122;s, in the more recent years, it has become progressively more popular.

Thrifting gives a wider variety of clothing options at a cheaper price than that of other producers. Not only does it offer opportunities in finding unique brands and styles, it is also better for the environment.

According to unwrinkling.com, shopping at thrift stores can not only be easier on the wallet, but it also reduces waste and pollution making it less likely for clothing to end up in landfills.

On average, 10.5 million tons of clothing material end up in landfills each year. Reducing consumption of mass produced products would make a significant impact. A large number of thrift stores also directly support charities and encourage communities to recycle more often.

More popularly known as â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;fast fashion,â&#x20AC;&#x2122; the mass production of inexpensive clothing in response to trends in the media seriously damages the environment. More often than not, these clothes end up in landfills. The chemicals used to produce these generally end up in the soil, therefore polluting it. According to codogirl.com, unsold clothing is typically burned, releasing an estimated 1.2 billion tons of carbon dioxide (CO2) per year into the atmosphere.

Greensocietycampaign.org states that many large manufacturers have moved their centers out of Western Europe and North America and into small villages in countries such as China, India and Cambodia to avoid the regulations of cities with higher working standards. They are typically located near rivers or small bodies of water due to the convenience of discarding toxic chemicals found in dyes. Buying clothes from thrift stores inevitably reduces the amount of chemicals dumped into water sources, so the money one spends will not go toward an industry that further pollutes water.

It may seem far fetched that one could make a difference simply by shopping at different stores, but if everyone on the planet had that mindset, nothing would be done about it. In order to further help the environment prosper, people need to continue shopping at thrift stores rather than larger producers.

eligion and morality are not synonymous, yet spiritually has been used for centuries as a tool to craft the moral standards of distinct individuals.

While in some circumstances practicing religion serves as a benefactor in one’s actions, going to church does not define ‘good’ versus ‘bad’ people.

According to pewforum.org, among U.S. adults who attend religious services at least once or twice a month, 68 percent say they attend services to make them a better person. Although one can improve themselves through faith in a higher power, it is a person’s behavior rather than their belief that makes them a righteous human.

One can obtain morals in a multitude of ways such as the way in which they were raised.

For instance, in a 2015 sermon delivered at the chapel of Saint Martha, head of the Catholic Church Pope Francis referenced the “Gospel of Luke.” In telling the story of the parable of the rich man and Lazarus, the hungry beggar, it becomes apparent that the rich man praises a higher power, yet has little concern for those around him. The Pope goes on to warn people against the dangers of “subtle sin” and claimed that not all churchgoers are good people.

Contrary to the popular belief that those who do not attend church have no faith in a higher power, in a study from the Pew Research Center, 60 percent of people do not attend church for reasons other than non-belief. American Christan author Joyce Meyer said, “Just because you go to church doesn’t mean you’re a Christian. I can go sit in the garage all day and it doesn’t make me a car.” Therefore, one does not have to define their faith by attending church every Sunday.

The dictionary.com definition of ‘faith’ reads, “belief in anything, as a code of ethics, standards of merit, etc.” Nowhere does it mention the requirement of attending church to have such spirituality. Hence, one does not need to attend church to praise a high power nor be considered virtuous.

In the same article from pew.org, nearly four-in-ten adults say they do not go to church because they practice their faith in other ways. As a way of maintaining character, non church goers must rely on individual spirituality to fuel their religious growth and defend their faith. Rather than attending church, be the church.

hen considering the next steps in your life, you should always determine what you will need to do to get you to the next stage. When the goal is to be successful in college, your mind tends to think about scholarships and future social interactions. However, what you are not considering is your body - the thing that allows you to thrive in the next stage of life. The health of your organs as well as muscles and bones is key to any success. You only get one body and brain.

On Aug. 1, 2019, I suffered my first of two concussions.

It was during summer cheer practice and, just like during any sport, there is always a chance that an injury will occur. That day I went to the emergency room and was subsequently ‘benched’ for three weeks. However, this is not the case for all athletes who are injured while participating in their sport. According to atyourownrisk. org, 54 percent of student athletes have continued playing while injured. There are a number of reasons why this is the case in modern sports.

According to St. John Fisher’s College, when a student participates in any activity, especially physical, it becomes a lifestyle. Their academic and social lives revolve around

their sport. So, when the athlete becomes injured, their entire lifestyle shifts. Regardless of the ultimate decision of either playing or taking a break, the athlete will face consequences. They will either continue playing and worsen their injury or seek medical attention and become suspended for a period of time.

According to the same research, athletes often do not seek medical intervention because they do not believe that their injury is serious enough for them to seek out help. This is especially true with concussions.

Concussions both vary from player to player, and depend mostly on self-reporting, rather than a broken bone or other visible injury.

Injury information policies should be implemented across all physical activities. When I suffered my first concussion, I had no idea what was happening. Even with almost immediate intervention and suspension, I am still suffering from post-concussive syndrome, almost four months after my second concussion. While it is difficult to sit back and watch the season continue without you, if I had continued to participate fully in all activities and work during that time, I would have been much worse off.

Athletes deserve to understand their body and not feel any internal or external pressure to continue participating with any sort of injury. You will have this brain and body for the rest of your life, and should prioritize your health over participation.

rowing up in small town Kansas, it can be difficult to get a strong worldview: to understand how other people live and the effects that things like wars and climate crisis have on other places. However, freshman Lynn Morford has been able to form perspective on worldly issues. This is because Lynn and his family lived in the Abu Dhabi Emirate of the United Arab Emirates (UAE) for six years.

They moved when Lynn was eight and his younger brother Kwynn was five. Their youngest brother, Layth, was born four years into their international stay. While the family was loosely seeking to move abroad, they had no idea where or when.

“We wanted to be international but we hadn’t specifically chosen there. They have teacher recruiting firms and we had originally thought we might go to New Zealand, and at the time Abu Dhabi was overhauling their education system and we did not know Abu Dhabi from anything. At that time we were just letting God lead us,” Kendra, Lynn’s mother, said. “We talked to the recruiting agency that recruits for all these different countries. They said, ‘So, Abu Dhabi has this amazing salary package and they’re really recruiting ex-pats, and they will provide for the family,’ because not a whole lot of international teaching will provide for whole families. So we were like ‘Okay.’

We didn’t even really talk about it, we just said yes. We were just open to whatever.”

After some planning, packing and letting go, the family set off on their almost 24-hour trip across the world. Their plane was almost entirely filled with recruited teachers headed to the Emirates. When they arrived, they did not quite know what to expect.

“It was crazy to go over there because it was an unknown.

Everything was so foreign,” Lynn said. “When you move from house to house, you still keep your stuff. When you move from country to country, you have to start saying goodbye to your things. You have to let go of the life you were living and adapt to a new one.”

After landing, everyone’s belongings were thrown onto a bus by people from the recruitment agency and they were taken to a hotel where they would live for over a month.

“Then they took us to this way fancy hotel. They were just serving us fresh juices and hot towels and everything was gilded and marble,” Kendra said. “It was right when oil prices were up too, so they just treated us so well. We actually lived in that hotel in Abu Dhabi, did nothing all day except exist, swim and explore for about a month and a half. Then one morning we just got a note slipped under our door. The thing is, you can’t choose where you end up.”

Luckily, the family ended up being placed in Al Lain, the region they preferred. About an hour from Abu Dhabi, right next to the Oman border, Al Lain is a small oasis in the desert. After another hotel stay, they received a note saying, “Come pick up your keys to your house downstairs.”

Housing was included in the teaching package, so the Morfords did not have to worry about rent. They moved into an apartment, but soon grew tired of having such close neighbors and limited living space. So, they sought to get their own house, a half villa. However, the houses in Al Lain have very different standards than those in Kansas.

“By half villa, we had six bedrooms, seven baths, two kitchens, three living rooms. That’s half of a house there. So when people say there’s money, they’re right,” Kendra said.

Then the family moved to their own compound with an outdoor space. The house also included a majlis which is a traditional spaced used for meetings, near the entrance of a house. They lived in this space for a few years, but then decided to move again because of the distance of the house from Kwynn’s sports practices, and family friends. They moved into a house in town center, which was their favorite.

After their first year in Abu Dhabi, the Morfords had almost no friends who were Americans. Their neighbors, friends, coworkers and most of the people they interacted with on a day-to-day basis were ex-patriots(ex-pats). Ex-pats are people who have moved from their home country and are living in a different one either permanently, or for a long stay.

“There were Kiwis and Aussies, people from the U.K., our one good friend was from the Czech Republic, Puerto Ricans, Chileans,” Kendra said. “Lots of South Africans, our neighbors were Indian. People from Sudan, Philipinos. It was just a huge melting pot. The population there, only a quarter are locals. The other three quarters were brought in.”

The UAE was founded Dec. 2, 1971. That makes the country a whopping 48 years old. Because of this, the locals brought in ex-pats to do, essentially, all of the jobs in the country. They also have a strong class system, and unlike the U.S. not everyone has the same rights. However, because they are Americans, they were often treated like celebrities. Kendra says that they just tried to treat everyone as equals.

“The generation that is living this way, their parents, were living in tents in the desert. Unless they had the money to go abroad, they were the first generation that was educated. That’s why they had to bring in experienced teachers. They couldn’t

educate themselves, they didn’t have the experience or the population,” Kendra said.

During every holiday, the family would choose a different place to travel to. They traveled to places like London, Scotland, Sri Lanka and Nepal. Sometimes they would come back to the U.S. for holidays to visit family. During that time they lived in a camper on Lynn’s grandparents land. When they came back to visit, they would always stop somewhere for a long layover. They stopped in cities like Paris, Milan and Amsterdam. Lynn believes that his life is forever changed because of his time abroad, in his views, style of living and even how he learns.

“I don’t think Kwynn and I would have the perspective that we have on school and the world as a whole,” Lynn said.

While in the UAE, Lynn and Kwynn were homeschooled by their mom. They would spend a few hours learning and a few hours working every day. Then their father Lonnie would get home from teaching in Al Lain, and the family would have time together. Kendra and Lonnie believe that the view that her sons have developed from traveling and homeschooling will influence them for their entire lives.

“I never taught them subjects, I taught them how to learn.

I don’t have to tell them, ‘Go do your work, go make this important.’ They’re responsible, that’s what I taught them. I think they have a joy for learning because of homeschooling,” Kendra said. “I anticipate both of them will travel the world.

They’re not done. We’re not done. Like we’ll go back out again.

I could easily see us going back for an adventure somewhere in there. I think we’re gonna lose Lynn to the U.K.. He’s gonna be an Oxford man. It’s like his favorite place on earth.”

After six years, the agency that the family was in the UAE with had some upper level changes that caused the family to move back to the U.S.. Lynn said that it was hard to let go of his life in the UAE, but that he has enjoyed transitioning into high school.

However, the family agrees that their time across the world almost feels like a dream.

“For a while when we got back, it all felt like a dream. Like all of that had never really happened. Now I understand it as just another part of my life. It was an amazing experience. Go see other places, it opened my eyes,” Lynn said.

S

ome may say ‘you can learn anything by watching a YouTube video.’ For junior Max Musser, this rings true. Musser started finding interest in cutting hair after watching a compilation of videos on the platform.

Musser first put his skills to practice on his younger brother as well as mannequins. Upon improving his technique and receiving approval from his mom, Musser created a business four years ago that he has advertised through business cards, Instagram, t-shirts and 3D printed signs with the name of his shop. As a spur of the moment decision, Musser named his business ‘Max Cutz Barber Shop.’

“I started out by cutting my brother Charlie’s hair before getting actual clients hair. My first paying customers were my brothers-they would pay me around $10 and I would cut their hair like every two weeks,” Musser said. “From there, it just expanded and more and more people came to me for hair cuts.”

With more than 50 clients, Musser has a permanent place for his tools in his bedroom. Some of the tools and equipment that Musser uses were gifts from his parents or purchases made on his own. On a regular week Musser cuts around 10-12 clients hair per week. Most of his clients are friends, family and classmates, while occasionally some are people that he does not know personally.

“When having so many clients per week, my weeks can

get hectic with sports and homework, but it’s something that I like to do, so it’s worth it,” Musser said.

Each decade brings new styles and trends, this decade there have been many different haircuts that Musser has noticed. From the mullet coming back Musser has been seeing more mullets yet the most popular would be the fade.

“Because the most popular haircut I give is are fades I’ve gotten better and better at them, I wouldn’t say that it’s my specialty but I do like to give those to people,” Musser said. “These past months mullets have come back and I’ve probably done around 10 mullets so far.”

Clients such as Franz expressed that he would much rather go to Musser than a licensed barber. Musser dedicates most of his time and bedroom to his hair cuts to make his clients feel as though they are in a professional atmosphere. Although his friends make of the majority of his clientele, Musser said he wants to make his business as sophisticated as possible.

“One time I went to a normal barber when Max was out of town and it was bad, I would much rather go to Max for hair cuts,” Franz said. “I had asked for what I usually have Max do but instead they basically just gave me a buzz cut and it was terrible.”

Musser said that while giving haircuts is a fun hobby, he does not have an interest in furthering this as a career. Instead he plans to play tennis and major in entrepreneurship or finance at Newman University.

“I will continue cutting hair through out college and more into the future as like a side job and an easy way to earn money,” Musser said.

I

t is no secret that every person has different events that shape their childhood. That could mean spending time with family, playing games outdoors, or even messing around at school. For some, the area in which they grew up can be the greatest influence in their lives. Such features include the culture of the region, animals native to the area and geographical characteristics.

Business and computer teacher Amanda Gillespie believes the area in which she grew up had a huge impact on her life.

She felt as though it was always “normal” to be from a place like Alaska with tall mountains and a tight-knit community.

“I thought that it [Alaska’s lifestyle] was normal and then I moved to Kansas and I thought it was magical,” Gillespie said.

“We had mountains and rivers and it wasn’t so flat; we were in an area where it’s called a ‘bread basket.’”

Even the use of machines to farm was so different for Gillespie, especially coming from a family who had their own farm and used horses to do most of the work.

“Our main food source was what we grew, and we grew huge cabbage,” Gillespie said. “It was like the size of our head.”

While Gillespie and her family ate everything they grew, they were also able to get some treats or rather make their own treats with resources natural to the terrain. This meant trading Muskox hair fibers with Inuit tribes to acquire whale blubber that her family used to create ice cream.

“So you’d mix the whale blubber with strawberries and the milk from the cows and when you mixed them all up, you would actually roll it back and forth on the ground for like hours,” Gillespie said. “That was our ice cream.”

Still, even with a difference in terms of geographical features, animals and lifestyle, her parent’s educational goals for her were not too different from that of the average parent.

Gillespie’s parents would sacrifice their time working so that she could eventually attend college and pursue her own career.

“We had everything that we needed, but my parents wanted to have us do something different and have us do something better, like go to college,” Gillespie said. “They went and worked jobs and they would have to drive an hour to get there and then drive back an hour. Then there was snow as well, you know, two feet of snow was nothing.”

The unity of Gillespie’s community is a memory that still stands out from her childhood. She recalls the event in which they came together to rebuild the town after a substantial snowstorm hit. Community members even had to use horses to get people out of ditches because their cars had gotten stuck.

“We were working with everybody in the area and trying to make sure that we found all of the calves, all the cows, everything,” Gillespie said. “It was just so amazing how the community got together to be able to do that and be able to have all of us be okay and shovel off roofs. It was just crazy.”

Gillespie describes her transition of moving from Alaska to Kansas as a culture shock. Everything from the way the wind hit her was different compared to how she had grown up.

Gillespie would also have to relearn the English language.

“My parents actually spoke French as their first language,” Gillespie said. “So we spoke French at home and then we would speak English at schools and stuff, but it was like more of a Canadian English, so I had to pretty much relearn the language.”

Naturally, some awkward confrontations occurred when Gillespie and her family moved to Kansas, especially since in her community, everyone would help discipline each others children.

“That was a big shock when like, there was a kid acting up in the store and my mom went to tell the kid, ‘Hey, no’,” Gillespie said. “Others would say, ‘What are you doing talking to my kid?’”

Even with all of the differences, Gillespie is still grateful to be living in Kansas. Though she enjoyed living in her childhood home, she is grateful for the conscience of her current state. Despite living in Wichita, she feels as though everything here is at ‘the tip of our fingertips.’

“I can go to like Braum’s and Pizza Hut and all that stuff and not have to drive an hour,” Gillespie said. “You have a Walmart right here. That’s pretty awesome.”

Gillespie and her family would use Muskox hair fibers as means to trade with inuit tribes so they could receive Whale blubber in return.

Freshman Ellie Harder I dream in black and white; distinctly desired beacons of light and transparent glass boxes filled to the brim with things I long to become, but cannot reach.

And sometimes I wish to be the flowers on the windowsill, to lay softly against the light of the afternoon without care.

But I then remind myself that flowers bloom brighter in the garden.

And they bloom with the weeds that hinder.

And they bloom with the winds that whisper.

They bloom with beauty, But also with the fallen and dead petals that make themselves present.

And it’s in this instant that I believe that life is worth more than mere human existence, that maybe I wasn’t created to sit on the windowsill without care; but maybe I was created to bloom brighter than I once believed.

Safe spaces

Students share where they feel most safe

B

eing able to unwind and enjoy leisure time can be a good way to recuperate after a long day. That process can be made easier through the use of a unique space in which one can call their own. This can simply be a place or state of mind where one can go to, get away, unwind and feel free from any opposing pressure from the outside world.

These spaces, nicknamed “safe spaces” can provide a break from judgment, opinions and having to explain yourself.

For teenagers, having a judgment-free space surrounded by supportive peers can be extremely useful. However, a safe space dose not have to be a physical location.

“I think it’s very important to have a safe space or somewhere you feel comfortable, especially at school,” senior Erik Jantz said. “As students we spend over seven hours a day at school, and if you don’t have a class, or a space you can be in for even a few minutes, that’s a long time to be uncomfortable.”

According to the Safe Space Network, “a safe space is a place where anyone can relax and be able to fully express, without fear of being made to feel uncomfortable, unwelcome, or unsafe.” For Jantz, this place is the band area.

definitely where I feel most comfortable,” Jantz said. “Band is where I have met a lot of my friends, and spent most of my time. In four years, I have had eight classes in the band area.

Every single day I spend an hour in the band area.”

By participating in either band or orchestra and completing an audition, students have the opportunity to be in Jazz Ensemble. For senior Eli Regier, the jazz room not only provides a place to practice music, but feel comfortable in a safe environment.

“The jazz room at NHS is the one place in the high school where I know I can let my guard down and relax,” Regier said.

“I am most comfortable in that room because I love jazz and I am very close to everyone in the jazz band.”

The jazz room is a restricted area (for jazz students only) so it is usually a place where Regier can be found alone or with a select few people. Regier said that if someone is looking for him, they usually look in the Jazz room first.

“I think finding a ‘safe space’ at school is a very good idea, especially if that person doesn’t necessarily have a safe space in their home life,” Regier said. “If you are looking for a safe space of your own, look for the places filled with people that you love and trust.”

Highlights, challenges of playing spring athletes recognize benefits of Sports Elly Green Reporter @EllyGreen16

E

very athlete knows that with athletics come hand-in-hand with injuries. It is no surprise when an athlete is benched for a game(s) or performance(s) due to a mild or severe impairment. According to atyourownrisk.org, 90 percent of student-athletes report some sports-related injury each year.

Sometimes, injuries can go way beyond a strained ligament or sprained ankle. Senior Meya Green has been competitively dancing since the third grade and joined the Railiners her freshman year. At the end of her junior year, she noticed hip pain accompanied by a popping sound in February.

“We saw four different doctors and got four different opinions, then finally I heard that I had what they call a Cam Impingement in my hip, which is like extra bone on my hip that was tearing into my socket.” Green said.

Green started physical therapy during May of her junior year, after that was unsuccessful she had surgery on December 10th of her senior year. This benched her for the rest of her senior dance season.

“I didn’t get to finish my senior year but I’m hoping to dance in college, and I hope that by this summer I will be able to be at my full potential.” Green said.

Another example of a student athlete suffering from the consequences of over working her body is senior Jaden Anton. Anton noticed pain in her shoulder when she started to go from school swim practices to club swim practices in the same evening.

“Naturally my body has more hyper-mobility in my joints and just from the repetitive movement from

swimming, it made it even worse to the point where I couldn’t lift plates or move my shoulder or do the motions that I needed to do.” Anton said.

In May of her sophomore year, Anton received a tightening surgery after a failed attempt at physical therapy for a permanent fix. Anton began swimming again during February of her junior year.

“We started with physical therapy, but then after about five months, we decided to go ahead and do the surgery. And then it took about 22 weeks of physical therapy afterwards.”

Anton said.

Although Anton and Green suffered from serious sports related injuries, they both agree that participating in sports does more good than bad. Green said that dance gives her a healthy way to express herself whereas Anton claimed that swimming improves her lung capacity and breathing, athletic trainer Elizabeth Brown also agrees that sports do more to benefit people than harm them.

“It [sports] allows them [athletes] to go and be active. That’s why there are different regulations, that’s why you take P.E.. Sports are a little bit more demanding, which is a better thing, because it helps you with your cardiovascular health as well as muscular strength,” Brown said.

With athletics, the body is at risk and almost all student athletes know this. Although they faced serious injuries, Green plans to start dancing again in college and Anton hopes to join the intramural swim team at K-State.

“I love the feeling of diving into the water at the beginning of a race and competing against other girls.

Swimming has also given me a way to relieve stress and have fun, and I couldn’t imagine quitting after high school.” Anton said.

R

ecall the coaches of professional and college teams alike. Both share a deep understanding for the sport that they specialize in teaching. However, they had to get this knowledge somewhere. Various coaches now designate time and energy to transform their love for a sport into creating successful student athletes.

During the spring season there are six different coaches that have once played the played the sport they are now coaching. Girls head swim coach Shawna Cole, track coach Tad Remsberg, baseball coach Mark George, tennis coach Nick Sisson, soccer coach Scott Jantzi and golf coach Joanie Pauls are all examples. Many of these coaches have grown up watching and playing sports they are coaching.

“It’s incredibly difficult to coach something that you didn’t participate in yourself. I’ve met a lot of coaches that have done it, but it’s usually they started kind of as an assistant and worked their way up and just learned a lot about it,” Cole said.

Athletes that became coaches later in life like those listed above may have coaches that have impacted them on how they coach their own teams. From finding techniques that are helpful in being in a leadership position while possibly seeing what not to do.

“The thing that was most frustrating to me from my college coach was the lack of decisiveness and decision making he had. In a position of leadership it’s not healthy for the team if you cannot make a decision. In that moment I decided that I would never be indecisive in anything that I do, especially coaching a team,” George said.

While coaches say that it can be hard at times, Jantzi said that it is

always in the best favor for both the coach and players to form that bond.

He also believes that having that bond will create an impact on the team in a positive way.

“I had good relationships with my former coaches and I hope my athletes can feel comfortable in coming to me with anything,” Jantzi said. “Having played the game at a high level, hopefully they can trust me and the other coaches to give them the right advice.”

Coaching student-athletes does not come without its hardships.

Such difficulties include creating relationships with players, proper disciplining of wrongful action and creating challenging practices.

“Relationships is one of the hardest things about coaching, I say this in a sense like parenting, when I have to hold them accountable or when I do have to discipline them, they probably don’t know this but it hurts me just as much as it hurts them but I know that there is a reason why I do what I do,” George said.

All coaches have different pieces of advice that they find important to preach to their players. Remsberg said his biggest piece of advice would be to be a good person and keep your grades up.

“This is why we are here, athletes are here to keep their grades up. Their academics is the most important part.

While being a person is the right thing to do and that’s what will get you through life,” Remsberg said.

For other coaches they have different advice that they give to their players in addition to being in good academic standing.

“Enjoy having the opportunity to compete while you have it, make the most of it, because once you play the last game or match of your senior year, it is truly over, and you can’t ever go back and do it again,” Sisson said.

Accomplishments Question: What was your greatest accomplishment as an athlete?

Remsberg: Track “Being competitive as a collegiate athlete for four years.”

Cole: swimming “Swimming and giving it my all and four years of college at a d1 school in a very competitive program and doing that while maintaining all my grades and working and all of those things.”

Sisson: Tennis “Earning a Division 1 tennis scholarship to play for Wichita State University and becoming an All-American.”

Jantzi: Soccer “My biggest achievement as an athlete was winning State in Legion baseball and going to two State championships in soccer.”

George: baseball “Being a four year starter in college. And being apart of all conference in high school and college.”
