The people who decided to see their friends were nervous, they didn’t want to be ↳Thespian Jeopardy! infected. The fear of the virus affects mentality, actions, and thoughts. ↳School & Professional In Time Square, where the celebration was louder in previous years, this year was more quiet with almost no Sports (Including Winter participants. Usually, there are million people celebrating and cheering and nearly no room to move a finger. Sports Guidelines) This year, there were only a few chosen groups of people in masks and they kept distancing guidelines. The ↳Art Corner’s Comic & rest of Time Square was empty. This emptiness makes people sad, but also united. Even if they are home Special Drawings alone or with a limited number of people they know, the pandemic affects all of us the same way: ↳Literature & Creative essentially, it scares us the same way. Many also complained about the excessive use of ads on the Writing Corner countdown to New Year’s, namely the enormous Kia commercial - a true representation of the current near-bankrupt state of New York City. The struggle ahead in 2021 will be grim, but not impossible. ↳Life Hacks ↳Quarantine Fashion & New Year’s celebration for many people meant hope to bring an end to isolation, fear, and death. It brought Lifestyle hope in the form of the vaccines and data on how to deal more efficiently with the virus. The New Year ↳Weird Science: COVID-19 gives us strength to keep fighting this virus and to help one another. Vaccine Updates, & Fast Lane ↳Meet Our Staff & Join Us! Attack on the US Capitol By: Muhammad Chaudhary Never in the history of The United States Of America has there been a riot inside the US Capitol -- except when the British burned it during the War of 1812. Yet on January 6th, 2021, history shifted. Here is a timeline of what occurred that fateful day: January 6th, 2021: 11:50 a.m., A gathering for Former President Donald J. Trump’s speech is in place. 11:54 a.m., Donald Trump Jr. posts a video on Facebook showing the Trump family watching the gathering from inside with the former President. 12:17 a.m, South of the White House, Trump tells his supporters to march to the Capitol, “We’re going to walk down, We’re going to walk down, any one you want but I think right here, to the Capitol.” 12:29 p.m., Constitution Ave, A crowd of Trump supporters are already agitated. 12:49 p.m, West of the Capitol grounds, a pipe bomb is reported at the Republican National Committee building, this place is just a block away from the Capitol. 12:53 p.m., Northwest side of the Capitol, people in the Capitol crowd harass police officers, and some even get physical until the police cannot handle them and they breach the building’s outer perimeter. 12:58 p.m., West Side of Capitol, Once the crowd gets to the steps of the capitol building, capitol officers in riot gear help control the crowd. 1:03 p.m., The speaker of the house, Nancy Pelosi, starts the proceedings to certify the Electoral College vote, with Vice President Mike Pence, while outside chants swarm in, screaming “Whose House? Our House!” 1:12 p.m., Trump’s speech ends and he calls for a march again, his own words, “... walk down Pennsylvania Avenue.” The mob of Trump supporters continues to clash and fight the police. 1:15 p.m., West Side of Capitol, The police and the mob keep fighting, and both of the sides throw chemicals on each other, the shocking part is that the person ran away after throwing it and the police never after for him. 1:48 p.m., Senate Chamber, Inside the capitol, Senator Ted Cruz, Republican, argues that the senate should not certify Arizona’s electoral votes. ---------------------1:50 p.m., West side of Capitol, Rioters make their way closer to the building. Chief Steven Sund requests D.C. National Guard. Around 2 p.m., East Side of The Capitol, police presence is smaller there so the groups breach police barricades and are about to reach the doors of the Building. 1:58 p.m., Northeast side of the Capitol, The police remove a barricade after violent confrontations between officers and the crowd. 2:00 p.m., East side of Capitol, A live video by Stephen Ignoramus via Youtube shows, The crowd breach the last physical barrier protecting the Capitol. 2:10 p.m., Northwest side of Capitol, in another video by John Sullivan via Youtube, shows how the exact moment the last barrier was breached. Then for more than an hour, there are violent clashes with the police. 2:11 p.m., Rioters on the West side of Capitol, break-into the building, two minutes later the senate is called into recess. 2:14 p.m., Rioters chase an officer to the top of the staircase, that’s where the senate chambers are by the way. 2:15 p.m., rioters enter the building through the broken window and a door. 2:16 p.m., Hall outside Senate Chamber, Rioters are literally feet away from the entrance to the senate chamber, but the police are blocking their way to get inside. After the breach, thousands of people reach the capital, and the Congress is halted. The police fight off the rioters while some members of Congress are able to evacuate the building. The crowd is filled with attendees from Trump’s rally. Three hours will pass until the building is fully secured.

The Second Impeachment of Donald J. Trump By: Julia Syska Donald Trump, the 45th President of the United States, was the first president in history to be impeached twice. On January 13th, 2021, President Trump was impeached for a single article: incitement of insurrection. According to ABC News, The House of Representatives’ votes were divided - 232 to impeach and 197 against. The case of second impeachment emerged after the Capitol riot on January 6, 2021. It was not a protest, it was a disrespectful act of violence carried by, whom many called, domestic terrorists. Based on the videos and other evidence, the riot was organized and performed by Trump supporters who were called and encouraged by Trump to march on the Capitol and protest -- while spreading false news on the election. Many criminals that were part of this riot said that they were invited by President Trump to the Capitol and to do what he wanted. Seven people are dead because Trump did not want to admit that he lost the election and encouraged people to fight for him. Windows were broken, many items stolen, and the whole building disrespected -- damaged. The rioters went to senators’ offices, disturbed them, and left threatening messages. At the time the riot was happening, Trump did not do anything to stop it. In fact, sources say that Vice President Mike Pence was the one who called the National Guard. Donald Trump repeatedly told his supporters over the long period of time that the election was stolen, to fight for him, get their country back, and not to refrain from the use of force. Many of his staff resigned and the rest consider him unstable and unable to do his job. You do not need to listen to the news to decide who is responsible for riots. You need only carefully listen to Trump’s speeches. If you say the news takes it out of context, then read his full tweets and research his full speeches. Do not only think about the meaning of his words, but also how his speeches affect his followers. During his four year term, he praised people who used violence, showed clear admiration for absolute rulers, imposed many executive actions that did not benefit us, and said the election was unfair, rigged, and stolen. Trump, who calls himself “a very stable genius”, does not listen to the experts and scientists, he ridicules people wearing masks which results in an increase of infections and puts people in danger. He sees masks as unmanly and not necessary … How so? I see them as a simple and inexpensive tool to reduce the chance of infection or at the minimum, as a sign of respect for others. Trump contradicts himself all the time, disregards his own words, our rights, and our Constitution.

Many rioters said they wanted to get their freedom back. But what freedom is it? Is it the right to be violent? Or is it the appreciation of our rights, having the platform to discuss our differences, and reaching consensus peacefully? On the impeachment voting, many House Representatives had a lot of comments to convince their colleagues that their point of view was right. Most Republicans were against the impeachment but their arguments were off topic and discussed the divisions, economy, past and future but not the pure subject of the impeachment which was Trump encouraging the riots. A very common argument was that the impeachment would further divide the county. It is not a reasonable argument because everybody should be equal under the law. The country is already divided by comments and actions performed by the President. So if a person from a white supremacy group would kill an African American, he shouldn’t be charged because it would further racial division? Or because white supremacists might think it was right? No, that person should be charged because they committed a crime an evil crime. Trump committed crimes too, therefore he should be charged as well. The other argument was that there were only a few days left till the end of Trump’s presidency. How is this relevant since he committed a crime? In the court of law, it doesn’t matter where the accused is going to go the next day or what he is doing. If he allegedly committed a crime, he needs to be charged and if proven guilty, convicted. Wouldn’t it be absurd if a sick person who can die in two weeks commits for example a burglary, he/she shouldn’t be charged and convicted because “it doesn’t make sense”? No, the person did a crime and got charged and needs to be convicted for his/her action. Another absurdity was the argument completely unrelated to the case like what the Democrats

did in the past. This case was about Trump’s impeachment, not Democrats’ past actions. If Republicans think the Democrats did something wrong in the past, they can bring it up to court, because this case was only about Trump. Democrats' comments were focused on the Capitol riot which left many people speechless. They connected it to President actions who said that he would march with the protesters to the Capitol to get their freedom, their country back. Democrats pointed out that at the beginning of the bloody riot, he didn’t do anything to stop it and unite people, just the opposite: he encouraged violence during his entire term. Many are concerned about other actions that need to be taken, like distribution of the vaccine. Still, many want to see a fair justice system. The President decided to be silent about his own impeachment. Without taking any sides, think about these arguments and carefully consider your opinion on the politicians’ actions and their choices. No matter what you think, we are all equal people - despite our differences. Instead of thinking about this as the source of division, think about it as the key to unification. Instead of looking at each other’s ideas and points of view as threatening, don’t just hear them but also listen to them. Because having a variety of ideas, we can choose the most efficient ones, grow and evolve together. If you still disagree with another person's thoughts, keep listening, maybe one day you will understand the beauty of being unique. Image Source: Axios

The Inauguration of Joseph R. Biden & Kamala D. Harris By: Dora John On January 20th, 2021, Joseph Robinette Biden Jr. became the 46th President of the United States of America. He is the oldest individual to assume office as President. Another historic first is his pick for Vice President: Kamala Devi Harris, a Senator from California. She is the first woman to hold the office of Vice President, the highest-ranking female official in United States history, and the first individual of Asian and African American descent. If that is not history enough, it is important to remember that this event took place in the most unlikely of circumstances. The previous day, Biden and Harris unveiled a memorial for the 400,00 Americans lost from COVID-19. With the storming of the Capitol occurring just two weeks ago, the ongoing pandemic, President Trump’s attempts to overturn the 2020 election, and a historic second impeachment, Washington was on high alert. The National Guard was resting inside Capitol Hill, on alert for any attacks from the far-right. The live audience was so limited for safety concerns that only members of Congress could attend with one guest of their own. Face coverings, temperature

checks, social distancing, etc. were mandatory for security measures. COVID-19 was not the only fear of the gathering. Many Congress members were wearing bullet-proof vests under their coats, and some knocked on the chests of their colleagues to remark on these vests. All of Washington, D.C. was practically shut down for this event. A myriad of security checkpoints helped to curb threats, such as arresting a man with fake inauguration credentials. There were travel restrictions, active duty operations, and more to secure the perimeter of the United States Capital. There were even investigations without the National Guard to remove those that may be a threat. Biden presented an inaugural address that was aimed to unite America once again, and to face the many challenges he has. He cited everything from Civil War, Depression, World Wars, and the 9/11 Attacks. Following the inauguration, there was a concert for America that was hosted by Tom Hanks.

Georgia Run-Off Elections: Why They Are Important By: Aamir Sheikh On January 5th, a runoff election was held in the state of Georgia after the results of the 2020 election left neither of the four candidates with a majority vote. Republican senators David Perdue and Kelly Loeffler were set against Democratic candidates Jon Ossoff and Reverend Raphael Warnock, and later that day the election declared the two Democrats the winners of the suspenseful race. Prior to this calling, the Senate contained 48 Democratic seats and 50 Republican seats, leaving the Georgia elections to fill the remaining spots. With Democrats gaining these two seats, the Senate is now split fifty-fifty, and with the recent inauguration of Vice President Kamala Harris, any tied votes can be broken in Democratic favor. The runoff election has marked a significant day in history, as Rev. Warnock has become Georgia’s first African-American senator, and Ossoff the state’s first Jewish senator. The Democratic hold of the Senate plays a crucial role for President Biden’s first term, allowing him less-hindered attempts to pass promised legislation. In his first few days of presidency, Congress has allowed thirty executive orders to be issued, such as the re-entering of the United States into

the Paris Climate Agreement, the continuation of American participation in the World Health Organization, and an extension on mask-wearing mandates to travel services such as airplanes, trains, cross-city busses, and water vessels. These orders, ten of which directly reverse former President Trump’s policies, would not have been able to be signed into effect without Congressional approval, which demonstrates how critical the runoff election was to President Biden’s success. Future actions such as additional COVID relief bills and the President’s cabinet picks will also heavily depend on congressional approval to allow Biden an unobstructed start to his presidential term. The critical Georgia runoffs have painted a bright future for the Biden administration, as the President currently takes action to fulfill promises and build back the United States, shining light on the country as hope for these dismal times.

You should not be scared, you should be alert. Studies have shown that cases are not spread as rapidly at school as may think. Proper precautions like mask-wearing and social distancing should be followed. In our previous edition, we released a chart of transmission rates when wearing masks and social distancing. Chances are, when following proper precautions, your rate of catching COVID-19 is low. When can I get a vaccine? At the moment, there is an immense effort to roll out vaccines -but supplies are low. Most likely, you will receive a vaccine around summer time (hopefully before the start of the next school year) . Tips for the upcoming semester? As of now, CollegeBoard expects APs to return to in-school testing. AP Exams will be a huge part of this semester … time goes by quickly! Stay focused, work hard, and get those good grades. Juniors will be taking their SATs too, so make sure you prepare for that. How can I help my community or volunteer? Although there have been many cancellations, that does not mean there are no opportunities. Look around the neighborhood for help needed with toy drives, food drives, etc.. Try to tutor someone. Check out Middle Country Public Library’s web page for more information. How should I register for the upcoming SATs? Registration is online, directly on the College Board website. Please be advised that as of the publication of this piece, Centereach High School is full for the March 13th SAT. Since Newfield High School is closed for testing, you will have to find a seat at other sites, such as Connetquot High School or Sayville High School.

Learning Language During A Pandemic - Ms. McCallum By: Dora John & Ms. McCallum Language is an immense task to learn. Under normal circumstances, to understand a language and the culture that envelopes it, students are often exposed to different foods, dressing, dialects, and more. Language learning is among the most interactive of classes at Newfield. As can be expected, the pandemic has altered the way that language is taught. We had an interview with Ms. McCallum, Newfield High School’s AP Spanish teacher, to discuss how the pandemic has impacted her teaching. What difficulties or roadblocks do you face with daily lessons?There have been two main obstacles that the students and I face on a daily basis. The first is technical glitches or inexperience. The second is interpersonal speaking practice. It has been a challenge to find a method that bridges both the hybrid learning experience and the technological learning curve. It has taken the first quarter and a half to finally find a way to create a way for paired and small group break out sessions. I am so grateful to those students who are open to randomized grouping. It is much more efficient to use the random group feature than it is to set up groups from scratch with each new learning session. In time, I hope to discover better ways to design groups that better suit the particular learning goals of each lesson. What are some examples of lessons you would have been able to do before (pre-COVID), that you are unable to do now? An example of a lesson that appeals to the kinesthetic learner is the Gallery Walk or Stations type activities. They provide a chance to stand up, stretch, walk, and work in close proximity to others. These types of activities can be recreated in some fashion, but without the physical benefits.

How has technology been beneficial or hurtful? Technology has been incredible for providing a world of new platforms, websites, and activities that provide meaningful instruction, practice, review, and collaboration tools. At times I feel like a kid in a candy store. I have so many choices and each new discovery is better than the last. The downside to that is that my bookmarks pages are overrun with websites to explore. One of my tasks is to make some sense of the assortment and begin organizing it. Although I am concerned with the amount of time students have to spend viewing a screen, I am pleased to see more students on task than previously, especially those who attend school in person. Students tell me however, that they are overrun with assignments and that some assignments take more time than the teacher realizes. For that reason, I am working with flexible due dates until I am more experienced with each new lesson and with how long it takes to complete it thoroughly. How have both you and other teachers in the language department been adapting to hybrid learning? Any tools you would recommend to other language teachers? I am impressed with my World Language colleagues. We have not stopped engaging with our students and with the new technology since March. We are determined to make the best of the situation and most importantly to connect with our students and to help them through this unprecedented experience. The truth is, our students are our inspiration and they help us along each and every day. I am not alone when I say that I have been saved by many students on many occasions this year. I am so grateful for the patience and generosity that my students have shown me.

Is it much more difficult to instruct students about the culture behind the language you teach now? Considering that much of the culture that we teach students has traditionally been taught through websites, video clips, audio, readings or by sharing personal stories, it hasn’t been too difficult to present cultural information in an engaging way. One way that has been put on the back burner for now (pun intended), is trying a new food. There hasn’t been a safe way to share food. I really look forward to a time when sampling a cultural dish is possible once again in the World Language classroom. In the meantime, students are encouraged to enhance their knowledge of the language they study by becoming a connoisseur of the cuisine in their free time. What advice would you give students trying to learn languages in these times? Any resources you would recommend to them? Where do I begin? Considering the best way to acquire a language is to use it in a real world setting, I would recommend creating opportunities in your life to engage with speakers of the language. If you do not have a friend who speaks the language or a place where you safely interact with speakers of the language, then you can consider Skype tutoring. You can also choose from a multitude of online language courses and even virtual language camps and immersion experiences. The first step,of course, is committing to increasing your proficiency level and by planning the smaller steps necessary toward achieving your goal.

As Newfield’s AP Spanish teacher, do you think AP® Exams this year will be more lenient than previous years given these circumstances? Do you think it will be an online exam like May 2020? What were your thoughts about online AP® language exams? It is my understanding that the College Board has made a determination to maintain the rigor of the AP® Spanish Language and Culture course and exam this school year. There is not currently an intention to adjust the world language exams to an abridged audio exam as was done last year. Therefore, all units of study are important to cover and all skills are important to practice on a regular basis. I was very impressed with the attitude, resilience, and adaptability of our Newfield students who took the world language exams and who worked through their anxiety and fears in the face of the online exam. There was a large amount of instruction on the exam format itself, let alone studying the course content. It was nothing less than extraordinary to watch the determination with which our students followed through on the commitment to their language learning goals and to completing the exams. They really demonstrated the grit necessary to overcome daily changes and updates to the class and to the exam roll out.

Five Newfield Students Place In DECA Regional Competitions & We Discuss DECA With Ms. Curran By: Dora John & Ms. Curran A Message From Ms. Curran: “Congratulations to Newfield DECA Students who competed in the Virtual DECA Competition that was held from November 30 th through December 4 th. Once again, Newfield’s students did very well. Zarif Rezwan placed in the Principles of Finance Category; Abu Kalam placed in the Principles of Hospitality category; Dora John placed in the Principles of Business Administration category; Khadija Siddiqui placed in the Hotel and Lodging category; and Ilsa Siddiqui placed in the Retail Merchandising category. Congratulations to all who won. Thank you to all who competed.” We discussed DECA this year with Ms. Curran, its advisor. DECA is also known as the Distributive Education Clubs of America, facilitating a wide range of competitions for students. It is best known around Newfield for its school store, which has unfortunately been shut down due to COVID-19 regulations. How do you feel about the five placings of Newfield students? I am very proud of the students who placed in the Virtual DECA competition. During this difficult time, students stepped up to the plate and continued to meet their goals. What difficulties did you face with the online DECA testing? Were any issues resolved quickly? The biggest difficulty with online testing wasn't being able to log into the site to get the testing tickets for the students. Some advisers couldn't get in; but I was one of the lucky ones where my password worked. If students logged into the site on a day their test wasn't given, then a new password had to be generated. My biggest obstacle was remembering how to get back into the site to get a new testing ticket and password for the student. What is the next step for those who placed? States/Internationals? For students who won, States will be fully virtual with online tests and recorded role plays. Nationals are still being determined.

What are some projects that DECA is planning on doing this year (with the school store being shut down)? I am hoping that the school store will be able to open in the spring. I would also like to participate in Habitat for Humanity. However, everything is on hold as you know. DECA usually piggybacks with other clubs so we can wait and see what other clubs are doing and help them because we share the same students. What is your favorite thing about being the DECA advisor? My favorite thing about being a DECA advisor is meeting new members and being inspired by their great ideas and being a part of their high-school journey. Thank you for your time, Mrs. Curran!

Newfield’s November Student of the Month: Logan Mazer By: Mr. Graviano It is with pleasure that I introduce to you the student of the month for November, Mr. Logan Mazer. He’s currently maintaining an unweighted GPA of 97.8542 and a weighted GPA of 101.7708. By school year’s en will have taken a total of 12 advanced placement and college level courses having the the potential to graduate in June with more than 35 college credits. Logan’s known simply as an amazing student. He has bee and continues to be actively involved in what seems like everything inside and outside of the classroom. He’s member of the Foreign Language Honor Society, pit orchestra, book club, jazz band, National Honor Society Tri-M Honor Society and the Legislative/Community Outreach Committee. More specifically, through music nation, Logan’s participated in NYSSMA since grade 6, the NYSSMA All State Wind Ensemble, NYSCAME County Band, and SCMEA All County Orchestra. Outside of school Logan’s passion lies in politics; not in wa to be the guy running for office, but rather the man behind the scenes. In speaking to Logan he expressed, “That’s where the real work happens. The person holding office and speaking at the podium isn’t doing the research and working for and toward the change.” He went on to state, “I don’t need or want credit for it. I ju want to make it happen.” What’s awesome about Logan is he knows from experience. He was an intern at the Suffolk County Legislature where he wrote mock legislation, prepped for legislative meetings and created tal points for the presiding officer. He was also given the opportunity to write his own legislation where he saw i through to completion when it was passed by the full body in October of 2019. Logan also served as the pres officer/intern for the legislature’s Page Program where he was responsible for leading general meetings and keeping the caucus united as one voting block. While active in all of that, Logan also worked as an intern in Bridget Flemings campaign in her run for congress. Through all of this, Logan’s leadership earned him the C of Staff Leadership Award in August of 2019. Mr. Murray, Logan’s AP Computer Science teacher described him as a wonderful young man, intellectually curious and a pleasure to engage in conversation with. It was Mr. Latham, however, Logan’s AP US Gov’t & Politics teacher, who described Logan best in stating, “Logan Mazer is the most dedicated and gifted political science student I have ever taught here. He has an instinct for the material and his depth o outside knowledge often dwarfs my own, particularly in local politics. He is a leader in projects and group discussions. His ability to synthesize new information and bring older topics back is uncanny. He knows how to get th done in the real world, something that many of our students could learn from. All that and he is a genuinely nice person. He is on the list of a few studen know I will speak about till the end of my career. He’s one of a kind.” Many would guess that Logan would plan on attending college somewhere in the D area, and that would be accurate. His number one is Georgetown but will also consider George Washington University or University of Maryland. He’ll ma Political Science with the goal of working toward becoming that driving force, the top advisor behind the scenes that influences the positive change. Loga must say I’ve been beyond impressed with each of the conversations we’ve had over the course of the past few months. I’m confident that your ambition intellect combined with your kindness and level of professionalism you carry yourself with at the age of 17 will lead us all to someday hear on CNN, “Top advisor to the President, Logan Mazer, went on this evening to say regarding the President’s decision…”. I look forward to that! Logan, as Mr. Latham expressed, there are many who can learn from you. More About Logan Mazer By: Veronica Hall Newfield’s Student of the Month for the month of November was senior Logan Mazer, and after speaking with him this comes as no surprise. He is clearly aiming to make our community proud, with all of the work he puts in. Currently, he maintains a weighted GPA that clocks in at 101.7 and an unweighted GPA of 97.8. On top of his exceptional grades, Logan is involved with many clubs at school. Before the book club ended abruptly over the summer, he had been its secretary twice, while being in Select Jazz Band and Pit Orchestra. He is also the band representative for Tri-M and his hard work in the music department has paid off. Last year he performed on clarinet for the All-State Wind Ensemble, and this year he made the All-National Concert Band on contrabass clarinet. Outside of school and music, he is just as active in the community, with a resume that is impressive for anyone, let alone a high school senior. In the past, he has interned for both the Suffolk County Legislature and Bridget Fleming’s congressional campaign in the primaries

Over the summer he served as Presiding Officer of the Suffolk County Legislature’s Page Program. He also worked on Steve Polgar’s campaign for the New York State Assembly as the Director of Communications and is currently holding the position of First Vice Chairman of the Brookhaven Town Young Democratic Committee while working on Johnathan Kornreich’s special election campaign for the town council and as a senior partner at Blue Dock Consulting. He is waiting to hear back from both of his top schools, Georgetown University and George Washington University. As of now, he has only heard back from Stony Brook University, which he was accepted into. It’s apparent that no matter what school he goes to, Logan is setting himself up for success and is representing Newfield in the best way possible.

Newfield Decks The Halls Again Class of 2021 Decorating By: Peter Marjowski The Class of 2021 took part in the holiday decorating in Newfield. The class theme was warm and cozy. They also included a special thanks to the military, essential workers, law enforcement, fire department, EMT, delivery drivers, doctors, nurses, teachers, farmers, and more in a touching display of gratitude for all of those who gave so much for all of us. Messages of happy holidays in numerous languages were also displayed along with a heartwarming winter scene full of a snowy mountainside and a fireplace. Class of 2021 had two sides of a hallway in their realm for decorating. The winter wonderland showing through the window of an ornate house was magnificent. The Class of 2021 presented an amazing display of artwork, which highlighted a strong showing of artistic abilities. While the Class of 2021 did not win the competition, they are all extremely proud of their work and put in a lot of effort in the painting and designing. Special thanks to all those who helped in the decorating of the Senior Class Hallway and congratulations to the Art Honor Society on their victory.

National Honor Society’s Stocking Fundraiser By: Peter Marjowski The Newfield chapter of the National Honor Society had a delightful fundraising event to generate money for senior scholarships. The National Honor Society, for the month of December, began selling “Candy Stuffed Stocking Grams� outside of Cafe A on B days. The stockings full of candy cost $5 and came with a candy cane and an opportunity for the purchaser to write a special heartfelt note to the recipient. If the purchaser chose, the stocking could be delivered to the person as long as they were in the school. This was an extra $1. There was also the opportunity, for another dollar, to have any name written on the stocking. This fundraiser was a success and many stockings were sold. Whatever stockings were left over were donated to children in need in our community for the holidays!

Angela Merkel: The Role Model By: Muhammad Chaudhary POV: A few days ago, I was in my bed and I had just woken up from a 7-hour sleep and usually, I have a book on my side table that I read for thirty minutes before getting out of bed. This time, I didn’t have a book because I slept early last night and forgot to put the book on the side-table. So instead I went on my phone, responding to some text messages and Snaps ... and just watched some Tik Tok. While I was watching Tik Tok, I got a notification from CNN. It was about Angela Merkel announcing she is stepping down as Germany’s chancellor and I had heard some stories about her before. Specifically, I had heard that she had been a great chancellor, so I decided to click on the story and it was by Ivana Kottasova. The title of the story read “Angela Merkel endured as others came and went. Now the world's crisis manager steps down.” I am open to learning more about Top Leaders and reading how they help this world.I read the article, the article was long but I was so much interested in it all of a sudden, and finished reading it in 5 minutes. The article was so well written … but to be honest I did not care for how it was written, rather caring about what was said. The article talked about Angela Merkel’s life. It is so interesting and powerful, and she still ignores the hate. Early Life: Angela Merkel (Angela Dorothea Kasner) was born July 17, 1954, in Hamburg, West Germany. Her parents were normal people and did not have any part in the government of germany, Her father was Horst Kasner, he was theology student and her mother was Herlind Kasner, she was a teacher of Latin and English. Her father accepted a pastorate in Quitzow, Brandenburg, and they relocated to East Germany. Before Merkel was born, her father and mother relocated again to Templin and that is where Merkel finished High School in 1973. Merkel’s early life had politics, power and leaders too. Merkel participated in the state's youth organizations. Merkel was a member of the Young Pioneers (from 1962), and the Free German Youth (from 1968). Study: Merkel was educated at Karl Marx University, Leipzig. She studied physics there from 1973 to 1978. After earning her diploma in 1978, Merkel studied at the Central Institute for Physical Chemistry of the Academy of Sciences, and later worked there as a chemist from 1978 to 1990. In 1986, Angela Merkel was awarded a doctorate for her thesis on Quantum Chemistry in 1986. Political Life: In 1989, the Berlin Wall fell and Merkel joined the newly founded Democratic Awakening, She also became the party’s press spokesperson in February 1990. Merkel later that year joined the CDU (Christian Democratic Union) in August 1990, that party merged with the western counterpart, the day before reunification of germany, on october 1. In the first election Merkel won a seat in the Bundestag (lower house of parliament), representing Stralsund-Rügen-Grimmen in the first post reunification election in December 1990. In January 1991, she was appointed by Chancellor Helmut Kohl as the Minister for Women and Youth. She was nicknamed Kohls Mädchen, (Kohl’s girl) because Kohl's female newcomer from East Germany appealed to several demographics. After the election Merkel became the minister of environment, conservation and reactor safety, and she presided over the first United Nations Climate Conference in Berlin in March--April 1995. In 1998, November 7, Merkel was elected secretary-general of the CDU. Merkel, Kohl's former protégée, called on the party to make a fresh start without its honorary chairman in an open letter released on December 22. The stance of Merkel greatly increased her exposure and popularity with the German public, and she gained a lot of notoriety in the public eye of germany. Merkel became the first woman to ever be elected as the head of CDU and the first non-Catholic to be the head of CDU on April 10, 2000. Merkel faced the side effects of the corruption probe and a divided party as the CDU leader. Merkel first wanted to run for Chancellor in 2002, but most of her party expressed a likeness for Edmund Stoiber of the Christian Social Union (CSU). Merkel became leader of the opposition after the CDU-CSU narrowly lost the election.

Chancellorship: Angela Merkel became Chancellor in 2005, by barely defeating Chancellor Gerhard Schröder, winning just by three seats. She was declared Germany's first female, the first East German, age 51, the youngest person to date to hold the office, as the Chancellor after the CDU agreed to a coalition deal with the Social Democrats (SPD). Merkel was then re-elected for a second term, in 2009, where she dealt with Europe’s Financial Crisis. She was re-elected in 2013 for a third term, and re-elected in 2017 for a fourth term. She will not be re-elected in 2021, because her party wants to choose a new leader. Angela Merkel has been the chancellor of Germany since 2005, which makes it 15 years. Challenges Faced: People made her an icon of budget cuts and tight supervision for the debt crisis. Merkel has also been the guiding force behind the efforts of the EU to regain trust in the euro. The statement by Merkel that if the euro struggles, Europe fails -- and ideally, reflects her contribution to the European project. Angela Merkel made Germany's economy flourish, she shortened how many hours people could work a week and started the economic stimulus package. To gain more support Merkel made the statement that she would shut out eight of the seventeen Germany’s nuclear reactors, and other would be phased out by 2022, she won a lot of support not only in Germany but worldwide as well, and later she changed her behavior and kept them. In 2015, Merkel introduced a minimum wage (€8.50-an-hour), she helped tackle growing social divisions and dealing with increasing wage inequality. In 2009 Merkel was at a meeting with Vladmir Putin, and Putin knowing that Merkel is afraid of dogs because she was bit by one once, brought his dogs into the meeting and let them loose, and said “I'm sure it will behave itself”. Later, Merkel talked about that night in an interview and she said “I understand why he has to do this — to prove he's a man”.“He's afraid of his own weakness. Russia has nothing, no successful politics or economy. All they have is this.” Another hypocritical moment with Merkel was when our former President Donald Trump, was in a phone call meeting with world leaders and all were gathered to talk about serious issues, Trump wasn’t prepared, all Trump did was bully other world leaders during the meeting. He once called Angela Merkel “stupid.” A quote from CNN article “The German official quoted above said that during Merkel's visit to the White House two years ago, Trump displayed "very questionable behavior" that "was quite aggressive ... [T]he Chancellor indeed stayed calm, and that's what she does on the phone." A last example of world leaders not treating her equal, is when Silvio Berlusconi (prime minister of Italy 2009) left her standing and waiting at the Nato Summit for more than 15 minutes, while he was on his phone. Angela has been described as boring, calm, pragmatic, and diplomatic -- she has also been described as “very ... matter of fact, very rational and people would never think of her as being corrupt." said Gabriele Abels, a professor of comparative politics at the University of Tübingen, Germany. There have been four US presidents from 2005 to present day, while there has been only one Chancellor for Germany. There have been eight prime ministers in Japan over the same period. Bild, a huge magazine company in Germany, put a photo of her on the cover and headlined it “Miss Germany.” She is also known as “The World’s Crisis Manager.” She is not known by all of this because of her gender alone ... it is because of what she did for the world and her people. Thespian Honor Society Kicks Off Jeopardy! Nights By: Caitlin Kenney (and her insider experience at the first show!) Recently, Newfield High School HS held a Thespian Jeopardy night. We had a chance to dress up in certain colors to represent our teams, and not only answer questions, but to spend time with friends. It may have been a competition, but everyone had a blast with each other. If you are interested, I have good news! I am in the Thespian Honor Society and am working my way up to become a member. I can tell you now: we are planning a future Jeopardy night ahead. It is so much fun and I really hope to see you at our next meeting. All the Thespians are very nice and understanding, so if something happens and you cannot make it, it is no trouble because we tape our meeting for those who couldn't make it. The best part about this night, in my opinion, is that WE make the questions, and WE answer the questions. I really hope you take this into consideration. This idea started with junior Mena Rabie (the Literature Section Editor for our newspaper), and was quickly picked up by our very own Mr. Austin. Thespian members were encouraged to share questions and answers, many of which were chosen for the Jeopardy Night. During the show, Thespian President Matthew Montalvo served as the MC, with Thespian officers leading the competing themes. There was even a final jeopardy round, complete with waivers. Google Forms to sign up for the next show are posted on the Thespian Google Classroom. If you have a knack for trivia, this is for you!

Keeping Up To Date With Professional Sports Coverage By: Anthony Otis

NBA Announced New Schedule Changes for 2020-21 Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the National Basketball Association (NBA) has announced a new schedule format to keep their players safe and hope to finish the season with no positive cases. Instead of having a regular 82 game season, the 2020-2021 season will have 72 games with the season beginning on Tuesday, December 22nd with the Golden State Warriors taking on the Brooklyn Nets and the LA Clippers taking on the recent champions, the Los Angeles Lakers. The NBA preseason will begin on Friday, December 11th with 5 games to play starting at 7 pm. As for Canada’s only NBA team, the Toronto Raptors, instead of playing at Scotiabank Arena in Toronto, they will play at the Amalie Arena in Tampa.

NHL Looks To Play Outdoors in 2021 Season Instead of playing in their regular stadiums, the NHL teams are looking to be playing in other professional sports team stadiums like Fenway Park and Heinz Field. So far, the LA Kings, Anaheim Ducks, Pittsburgh Penguins and the Boston Bruins are looking to play outdoor games in the upcoming season. Due to the pandemic, it seems that more fans would be allowed to attend outdoor NHL games than indoor ones to keep the number of players and staff testing positive for COVID-19 under control and to play it safe for the fans who enjoy watching their favorite teams play and their families. The 2021 NHL season will begin on Saturday, January 16 and the league will have each team play a total of 56 games.

NFL 2020 Season in Review With the new COVID-19 protocols, the NFL was deciding to do the season. With 3 weeks left until the season, the NFL has decided to do the season with the new COVID-19 protocols. In Week 4, the Tennessee Titans had a COVID-19 outbreak with a total of 22 positive cases. As a result, the NFL had to move the Week 4 matchup against the Pittsburgh Steelers to Week 7 and they lost that matchup 27-24. The NFL had to reschedule a total of 18 games this season due to COVID-19 cases. The Jacksonville Jaguars ended up with a 1-15 record with their only win in Week 1 against the Indianapolis Colts and ended the season with a 15 game losing streak. The New York Jets ended up with their worst record in franchise history with a 2-14 record. The Jets started the season with a 13 game losing streak then winning the next 2 games against the Rams and the Browns, who were both looking for a playoff spot when they played against the Jets. The Jets were looking to not have the worst franchise record as they were in Foxborough to face Cam Newton and the New England Patriots. The Jets had a 14-7 lead at halftime then the Patriots scored 3 TD’s to win 28-14. The Pittsburgh Steelers had an 11-0 start to the season having a 66.08% chance to get a 16-0 record. In Week 13, they had a 14-3 lead and they suffered their 1st loss with the score 23-17. They ended up losing 4 of their last 5 games to finish with a 12-4 record with an AFC North title. The Cleveland Browns ended their 18 year drought without playoff spot in Week 17 with a 24-22 win over the Pittsburgh Steelers. They looked for that spot in Week 16 against the Jets and they lost that game 23-16. The Washington Football team needed the win and the Giants needed an Eagles win. The Washington Football Team ended up defeating the Eagles with the score 20-14. The Washington

Broncos Play Saints Without A QB On Thursday November 26th, Broncos 4th string quarterback Jeff Driskel tested positive for COVID-19 forcing head coach Vic Fangio placing starter Drew Lock, 2nd string Blake Bortles, and 3rd string Brett Rypien to be quarantined after being in contact with Driskel. Fangio’s option to fill in a spot for QB is extremely limited. With the game against the New Orleans Saints approaching, Fangio went to place wide receiver Kendall Hinton as QB. In the game, Hinton combined 1/9 with 13 yds and 2 interceptions. The Broncos will face the super bowl champions, the Kansas City Chiefs on Sunday night football on December 6th.

Washington’s Second Half Comeback Helps Steelers Suffer First Lost On Monday, December 7th, the Washington Football team came back from a 14-3 deficit to defeat the unbeaten Steelers with the score 23-17. The Pittsburgh Steelers are now tied with the Kansas City Chiefs for 1st place in the AFC conference. Washington running back Peyton Barber rushed for a total of 23 yards on 14 carries and with a touchdown in the 3rd quarter to help Washington start their comeback. The Washington Football Team will face the San Francisco 49ers and the Steelers will face the Buffalo Bills on Sunday Night Football.

Football has won the division and faced Tom Brady and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in Wild Card Weekend. The Miami Dolphins started 1-3 and they started their first round pick, Tua Tagovailoa and they had a 9-2 record going into Week 17. They were looking for a playoff spot and they were going against the Buffalo Bills. The Dolphins ended up losing that game 56-26 and giving up that spot to the Indianapolis Colts. The Raiders have moved to their new city of Las Vegas. Las Vegas started their season 2-0 with wins against the Carolina Panthers and their first game at Allegiant Stadium against the New Orleans Saints. The Raiders were facing the Miami Dolphins to have a big chance to make the playoffs. They lost the game by a Jason Sanders 44 yard field goal as time expired with the score being 26-25. They were eliminated from the playoffs with that loss. The next week, they won 32-31 against the Denver Broncos to finish 8-8 in their first season at Las Vegas. The defending Super Bowl champions, the Kansas City Chiefs started the season 4-0. They were coming to Week 5 against the Las Vegas Raiders. They ended up losing that game 40-32. After that game, they ended up going on a 10 game winning streak. During that 10 game win streak, they clinched playoffs, AFC West division title and the #1 seed in the AFC. The NFC East race was a tight one that took the race to the final week of the regular season. The race was between the Dallas Cowboys with a 6-9 record, Washington Football Team also with a 6-9 record and the New York Giants with a 5-10 record. In the final week of the season, the Giants were facing the Cowboys

and Washington was facing the Eagles, who were knocked out of the division race in Week 16 with a 37-17 loss against the Cowboys. The Giants defeated the Cowboys with the score 23-19 and knocked the Cowboys out of the NFC East hunt. The Washington-Philadelphia game was The Tampa Bay Buccaneers ended their 13 year playoff drought in Week 16 with a 47-7 win over the Detroit Lions.

Browns’ 28 Point First Quarter Helps Them Earn Their First Playoff Win Since 1994 On Sunday January 10th, the Cleveland Browns were facing against their division rivals, the Pittsburgh Steelers. On the first play of the game, Steelers center Marcus Pouncey snapped the ball too early for quarterback Ben Roethlisberger and forced the ball into the endzone for a Cleveland touchdown. On the next drive, the Steelers were at their own 48 yd line on a 1st and 10 and Roethlisberger threw an interception to M.J Stewart forcing an offensive score for the Browns. Later in the 1st quarter, the Browns managed to score 2 more touchdowns to give the Browns a 28-0 lead. The Browns ended up getting their first playoff win since 1994 with the final score of 48-37. The Browns will face Patrick Mahomes and the #1 Kansas City Chiefs on Sunday January 17th at 3:05 pm.

Tom Brady had started the season looking like the Buccaneers were not going any further with him and Tight End Rob Gronkoski. Then in Week 2, the Buccaneers started a 3 game win streak and blew that streak with a 20-19 loss against the Chicago Bears. The Buccaneers finished the season with a 10-6 overall record to get their first playoff spot since 2007(lost WC weekend 24-14 vs Giants).

Brady-Mahomes Part V as Buccaneers Host Own Super Bowl On Sunday January 24th, Tom Brady and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers defeated Aaron Rodgers and the #1 seed Green Bay Packers with the score of 31-26 to advance to their 1st Super Bowl since the 2002 season(won 48-21 vs Raiders). No NFL team has ever hosted their own Super Bowl and the Buccaneers are the 1st team to do it. Tom Brady threw 20-36 with a total of 280 yds, 3 Touchdowns and 3 INT’s. It is a sizzling 24-14 on top-rated NFL picks this season, returning well over $800. 2021 Pro Bowl is Going Virtual Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, NFL commissioner Roger Goodwell has announced that the 2021 NFL Pro Bowl will be virtual instead of having a regular game. Instead of the Pro Bowl being at Camping World Stadium in Orlando, Florida, the Pro Bowl will be at Allegiant Stadium in Paradise, Nevada, home of the Las Vegas Raiders. On November 17, 2020, the league opened fan voting for the Pro Bowl roster, and announced plans to stream a "virtual" Pro Bowl on its social media platforms, where NFL players and celebrities will play Madden NFL 21 with AFC and NFC rosters selected by the vote. ABC, ESPN, and Disney XD will air a television special in place of the Pro Bowl Celebration which will feature segments and interviews honoring the Pro Bowl roster, and highlights of the 2020 season, and promoting the digital Pro Bowl event. With the rosters announced on December 21, 2020, lots of fans and young football fans will definitely watch this game. And for gamers, they can watch their favorite players playing the game that they like or can learn from it. 2021 NHL Season By: Peter Marjowski

The NHL is going to start a new season! On January 13th, the NHL is going to begin a new 56-Game season. But this is not going to look like a regular season. As of now, it is unlikely that there will be fans in attendance. This is only one of the ways that this season will be different than usual. Another big change this season is the change of the divisions. The NHL has decided to change the divisions because of the pandemic. It is their way of limiting travel across the country and into Canada. Firstly, the names of the divisions have changed. The new names of the divisions are North, East, Central, and West. The previous divisions were Atlantic, Metropolitan, Central, and Pacific. In the 2021 season, another difference is the emergence of all Canadian divisions. Selections(including reserves) All of the Canadian teams in the NHL will be in the Selections(including reserves) North Division. Other divisions had variations of teams Ravens, 7 as well. This season the games will be played within Cardinals, 3 the division. In the Central, East, and West divisions the Bills, 5 teams will play each other 8 times this season and the Falcons, 2 North division will play each other nine or ten times. Browns, 3 The start of the regular season will be on January 13th. Bears, 2 The trade deadline will be April 12th. The end of the Broncos, 2 regular season will take place on May 8th and the Last Lions, 3 day of playoffs will be on July 15th.Some other Texans, 2 important dates are that the expansion draft will take Packers, 7 place on July 21. The NHL draft will be on July 23rd Colts, 3 and 24th. Finally, the start of free agency will be on Rams, 2 July 28. This year the playoffs will be a 16-team Chiefs, 7 best-of-seven playoff but it will be the top 4 teams in Vikings, 2 each division who will qualify to the playoffs and will Chargers, 2 be placed in divisional brackets for the early rounds of Saints, 5 the playoffs. The teams that make it to the Conference Raiders, 2 Final (or as it is called in a normal year) will be seeded Giants, 2 by their points from the regular season. Dolphins, 1 Eagles, 4 This means that two teams from the same conference Patriots, 3 could play each other in the cup final! That is never 49ers, 3 usually the case. The games will be played in the Steelers, 5 fan’s home arenas unless otherwise prevented by Seahawks, 7 Covid-19 pandemic regulations in which case a neutral Titans, 2 area will be chosen for the game to be played. Winter Track By: Zarif Rezwan Due to the worldwide pandemic, Winter Track is one of the few lucky sports that are still being carried out. To keep this privilege, strict safety guidelines are being followed. Students are required to bring their own water bottles and additional attestation tickets to practice. They are also required to wear masks at all times; unless an adequate distance is maintained. Sadly, there are far fewer students participating in track this year than in previous years. Nevertheless, the decreased amount of athletes has made it easier to still train while being safe.

Masks may only be pulled down by distance runners after they have finished at least 300m of their race because everyone starts on the same line. By 300m, usually, there is enough separation between the runners. Sprinters may start and finish their race with their masks down as they start with some space between them. There will be no spectators at events due to COVID-19. There is talk of recording or live streaming the events for people to see online.

To avoid the crowding of too many people, distance runners and short-distance runners have been scheduled to train at different places on different days. The two separate groups train hard and easy on alternating days because the hard days are conducted on the track. This means that if the distance runners are being put through a hard workout on the oval track by Coach Adler, the sprinters are having a student-led easy day on the turf. The next day, the Coach supervises the sprinters on the track while the long-distance runners do easy laps around the perimeter of the school. This routine is carried out throughout the week. All the while, the throwers (people who do shot put and discus throw) are led through their workout in a different space by their new coach, Mr. Piccininni.

Although these are rapidly changing times, hopefully, the Winter Track team will be able to safely and successfully finish its season.

Instagram, Facebook, and Twitter are having a conversation in an old myspace outlet before the Application Awards begin. All three apps are nominated in the Best Application category and a couple of other small awards. The awards ceremony will begin soon.) Facebook- Guys, I can not believe we made the cut! Instagram- Yeah, I can not believe you did. I knew I would make it. Twitter- Congrats guys! I am so tempted to retweet our nominations. Instagram- OMG please do not. Facebook- Are you kidding? I think itś a wonderful idea! Instagram- That’s what Mark said when he created you circa some year in the 2000s. The only thing wonderful about you is those old generations can rant about their back pains and ObamaCare. Twitter- I mean, you’re not completely wrong…. (Facebook starts turning red) Facebook- Geez Insta, do you ever think about what you say to people? I would love to tell you to get your face out of this outlet but I forgot you have a rinsta, and a finsta. Twitter- Now that is retweet worthy. Instagram- Last I checked Twitter, most people use you while they are going to the bathroom. Twitter- Yeah well people use you just to take pictures. That’s literally it. Facebook- I have reunited people all over. None of you can beat that. Instagram- Oh yeah? How many likes do your followers get? Mine get millions. Twitter- This is going nowhere, guys. Facebook- I was going to say do you even have a mainframe. “Instagram” sounds like the cereal equivalent of instant oatmeal. Instagram- Imbeciles! Pay attention! They are now announcing Best Movie Application. I totally voted for Hulu. Sometimes I feel it gets less attention. Facebook- Probably comes from your attention addiction. I voted for Netflix. Instagram- Of course you voted for Netflix. I chose Amazon because it’s a killer.

Instagram- You clearly do not know me- cause I was going to say something different. Facebook- Hey! The awards are starting in five! (Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter all walk over to the Microsoft Theater down the road. There are a ton of applications in attendance. The opening speech is given by the host. The first award announced is Most Accurate Application) Twitter- No way- most accurate application goes to the News app? This is fake news I say. Fake! Facebook- Almost as fake as Insta’s profile. Instagram- At least I have a profile. Your people’s profiles haven’t been changed since before puberty. Twitter- Well I am definitely quoting twitter on this fakeness. (The next award is Best Social Media Application in which both Instagram and Twitter were nominated in the category. The next presenter announces that Snapchat is the winner) Instagram- Well great! This is not okay. TGIF! I’m already off to a bad start. I knew Twitter was not gonna get it but I was sure I would. Twitter- Jesus Insta. That’s not necessary! Snapchat is quite popular so I understand! Instagram- Oh shut up you tweeting twit! (The host is now announcing Best Revival) Instagram- Next award is the best revival, OMG, I swear if Vine wins I will literary blackout. (Vine is announced as the winner) Twitter- And….Vine wins. Facebook- Here comes the blackout. All them Insta users are gonna be mad. Instagram- I am blacking out. Twitter- What’s with Insta’s Vine obsession? Facebook- Insta basically posts tons of Vine videos and memes based on those videos like every week. Posting vines is like Insta’s favorite thing to do. Twitter- Well that’s stupid. That’s even lamer than you. And I thought your current usage status was pretty lame. Facebook- Sure. Ratings for me have gone down a bit….been hacked a few times. But hey, at least I don’t have to worry about that fake junk.

Facebook- Haha! Remember when Netflix was everyone's favorite? Good times!! Instagram- That is so 2015. Get a life dude. Oh, wait! You’re probably stuck in all those unfriended cobwebs. (The next presenter announces the nominees for Best Photography Application which are: Pinterest, Instagram, The Camera App, and Pic Collage. Pinterest is announced as the winner) Facebook- Oh no….here it comes… Instagram- Um….WHAT? Imma….I’m about to pull a Daenerys on this damn academy! Twitter- Insta calm down, you’re making a scene! No need for burning anyone! Facebook- Can everyone just shut up for one second! Twitter- Dang we are struggling. Maybe the Myspace outlet was a bad idea for a meetup. Instagram- Myspace has always been a black hole. (A couple of apps shush Instagram. Instagram turns around and points the “ unfollow “ on their accounts) Facebook- Medias will do that to you. Guys, there are only two more awards until our category so can you please all like shut the hell up. Twitter- Hey! That is some rude comment there. My setting page is trembling. Instagram- The only thing trembling will be you two when I win the award so byeeeeeeeee…… Twitter- You wish. Facebook- Ok, it’s the Best Entertainment Game award. A Big Heart By: Julia Syska Dogs, big or small, all have a big heart. They love unconditionally their owners, even the ones that don’t deserve it. They don’t expect you to buy them expensive things, but they expect you to be with them. Open your heart with the key you hold and allow their love to be with you. Allow yourself to really see them, not as the animals but as the companions. Bruno, my stepfather's dog, was a big brother to a puppy who later became his best friend, Winston. While they grew together, they became inseparable, they became brothers. My stepfather got so close to both of them to see the beauty the other people couldn’t. They were his friends, his companions.

Facebook- Hahahahaha! Youtube! Twitter- That is pure gold. All it does is glitch and advertise. Honestly what the heck is wrong with the academy? Instagram- These awards are rigged, almost as much as the 2016 election! Twitter- Haha, anyway our award is about to be announced!!! Instagram- This is the moment all my likes pay off. (The final presenter walks up and begins speaking. All three apps are in a category with a total of six apps. Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter are sweating faster than the spread of Wikileaks) Twitter- THIS IS IT! (The nominees are: Instagram, Snapchat, Facebook, Twitter, Pinterest, and Tinder. And the winner of Best Application of 2019 goes to…… TINDER) Facebook: What? Twitter: What the….. Instagram: WHAT THE HECK! Facebook-What in the name of someone’s head! Tinder? TINDER? Instagram- This is inconceivable. This is FAKE! FAKE! Twitter- Woah! Guys relax! You’re making a scene! Instagram- I DON’T CARE. I SHOULD HAVE WON. TINDER IS SO… (Facebook turns on Instagrams mute button) Twitter- Well thank the lord. Facebook- It was about time someone did that. I just could not take Insta’s blasphemous bumbling barking box anymore. (All three apps give one another a look when Tinder begins to give an acceptance speech) Tinder- Thank you so much! I want to thank the academy and my fans for choosing me for this award. I am proud to know that my users genuinely enjoy what I give them. It has been a great honor to bring couples together. One of my biggest inspirations is Facebook. Thank you so much, Facebook for showing the importance of creating relationships. No one has truly done it better than you. One day, after their normal meal, Bruno became ill. Later we found out that a few thousands dogs died in the U.S. because of poisoned dog food and Bruno was one of them. He was dying for four hours in my stepfather's arms. Not only did my stepfather lose his best friend, but Winston lost his brother. Winston wasn’t affected by the food itself since he ate puppy food at that time. But later Winston became really depressed, he didn’t want to eat or play. With Bruno’s death, part of Winston’s heart died and he was never himself again. He later died because of his age and broken heart. Both of the dogs allowed my stepfather to develop the powerful bond and connection with other species, and to discover the amazing emotional relationship that could exist among animals.

Lifehacks: Winter Edition By: Emily Ramirez Do you ever feel like winter can be a challenge sometimes? Well, if you answered yes, you are not alone as winter is a difficult time for many. Winter days are long and extremely cold, weather extremes can occur at any given moment. The many months of cold temperatures seem perpetual. These wintry days can be less tiresome if you are equipped with a few life hacks to stave off frigid weather. 1) It is snowing and you have to shovel your driveway. However, you do not have any waterproof shoes. To prevent your feet from becoming wet, place plastic bags inside your socks. 2) When you are shoveling your driveway, place cooking spray on your shovel to prevent the snow from sticking to it. 3) To remove pilling and fuzz from your winter sweaters, running a razor over your sweater will remove the gross bunches of fiber on your sweaters. 4) To avoid frost on your car mirror, place plastic bags over your mirrors at night. When you awake in the morning, they will be frost-free. 5) To make a DIY reusable hand warmer obtain hem tape, rice, fabric, and scissors. First, cut the fabric into two of the same shapes of your choice (make sure they are the same size). Then, place hem tape on the inside part of your fabric shapes, place the shapes on top of each other, but leave a little gap open. Next, fill your fabric with rice. Put the tape on the open gap that is remaining. Finally, put it in the microwave for thirty seconds. 6) If you need to use your bike in the snow and ice, to get more grip on slick surfaces, place zip ties at even intervals around each tire to create bike snow tires. 7) Spray your car windows with a 3:1 vinegar/water mixture. This will keep ice from forming on your windows 8) Flip the switch for your ceiling fan to reverse the spin of the fan and turn on the lowest speed to blow warm air down from the ceiling 9) Stuff a newspaper into wet boots to absorb moisture quickly. 10) To warm up your house, leave the oven door open slightly after baking. However, do not forget to close it. 11) Apply honey to chapped lips for a natural moisturizer. 12) To avoid getting dry skin, take short, lukewarm showers. 13) Do not drink coffee before shoveling. Caffeine is a stimulant and can add extra stress to the heart. 14) Just like humans, dogs and cats can get dry skin in the winter. To avoid painful skin cracking or peeling on your pet’s paws apply vaseline before taking them outside. 15) If you do not have an electric blanket, blow-dry your sheet before getting into bed.

COVID Vaccine Updates By: Veronica Hall On December 11th, 2020, the FDA issued an emergency use authorization, or EUA, of the Pfizer vaccine for COVID-19, as well as approving the Moderna vaccine, and over the past month, the American public has witnessed the slow progress of the first vaccines being delivered to frontline workers. However, with the vaccine being produced in a matter of months, some people continue to question whether or not it is actually effective. Meanwhile, vaccination progress is taking longer than what was hoped by the Trump administration. The Trump administration routinely promised that by the end of 2020, a hundred million Americans would be vaccinated against COVID-19, but on January 4th, 2021, the New York Times reported that only 4.6 million people have been vaccinated, falling far short of the president’s suggestions and leaving many wondering what is going to happen as president-elect Biden takes office and continues Operation Warp Speed. In response to a wave of uncertainty about the vaccine, particularly regarding the potential for allergic reactions and side effects, the CDC has provided much information on how the vaccine works. The COVID vaccine works differently than traditional vaccines that use a weakened version of a virus because it is an mRNA vaccine, which, rather than directly introducing the virus, only provides instructions to make a core protein of the virus called the spike protein. Using these proteins is far faster than cultivating and weakening a whole virus, which is a factor of why the vaccine was developed so quickly. This also has implications for future vaccine development, like the idea that one vaccination could protect against many diseases. Some people have reported side effects from the COVID vaccine in the meantime, and this appears to be because the spike protein is displayed on the surface of a cell and the body recognizes that it is foreign and creates immunity to it, similar to how a traditional vaccine works.

There is a lot of concern about the aforementioned side effects, to the point that some people would refuse a vaccine, but the CDC assures that this is a normal sign that it is working. Common side effects include pain at the injection site, fever, chills, tiredness, and a headache. However, if symptoms do not appear to be going away after a few days or redness and swelling around the injection site increases after twenty-four hours, a medical professional should be contacted. It has been noted that symptoms appear more often after the second injection. On top of fears about side effects, vaccine rollout is going slower than predicted. There was a delay in shipments reported from all across the country as soon as December 17th, less than a week after the Pfizer and Moderna vaccines were sent for shipment. Iowa and Missouri reported at least thirty percent of the expected doses weren’t available, while Illinois reported that they may receive only half of what they expected. The governor of Nebraska was told the deliveries for the state would be pushed to the end of December. Pfizer reported shipping all of the doses they were told to ship by the federal government and stated they were awaiting more orders. With that explanation refuted, it’s unclear what the causes of these delays are, although the extreme temperatures that mRNA vaccines must be stored at could be a factor.

Fastlane An Update On the World’s Performance Cars By: Aamir Sheikh Nissan: Nissan’s first performance line began as the 60’s drew to a close, when the company, formerly known as Datsun, released the 240z. The 1970 “Z”, as the car and its successors became to be known as, was one of Japan’s greatest hits, selling over 140,000 models in the car’s first four years in American markets alone. Over the years, the Z has seen several improvements through various different models, most recently the 2019 Nissan 370z NISMO* making a maximum of 350 horsepower. Now, Nissan’s top engineers have created the all-new “Z Proto”, or as fans call it, the new 400z. The Proto will mark a new generation of Nissan’s Z line, a milestone fans aren’t the most content with due to the deviation from the 370z’s design. The car now features a much more sleek design, one that incorporates and accentuates traces of the shape of older Z’s into a light, futuristic body. The future of the GT-R seems bright as Nissan progresses to make breakthroughs in driver-assistance technologies and moves forwards with its electric car plans, suggesting more development in the GT-R’s electrical works later on. * “NISMO” stands for “Nissan Motorsports International”, and the title is included in the company’s highest performing models BMW: BMW’s future is as big as the grills on their latest models! Jokes aside, the company began its interest in electric cars with the 2013 BMW i3, an incredibly small fully electric compact car. Roughly a year later, the German automaker released the world’s first hybrid supercar- the $136,600 i8. Running on a turbocharged three-cylinder 1.5 L engine, the car also has an electric motor to spin each of the car’s wheels, driving it to a top speed of 155 mph on German autobahns. The company’s success in electric automobiles has led them to the development of the i4, an upcoming fully electric sedan that meets BMW’s century-long standard for luxury at high speeds and comfortable style while tackling the track. The 2022 i4 is expected to come in three variants: the i435, i440, and i4 M50 xDrive, the latter of which will clearly be the company’s performance model (implied by the M* in the model name). Much of the car’s statistics is unknown, though the automaker has released several pictures of the car through their website. With production due to begin in less than twelve months, fans of the legendary automaker have their eyes laid carefully on the development of the i4. *Similar to Nissan’s “NISMO” branch, the “M” branding is reserved for BMW’s top-of-the-line performance model.
