These aspects include his early in uences, his training and skill development, his breakthrough roles, his impact on the industry, and his future aspirations. It o ers a candid conversation with James Sang Lee about his professional journey.

Within the lm industry, the role of a martial artist is not limited to ght choreography. It encompasses a wide range of skills, from lmmaking to knife ghting, rearms instruction, and the art of ghting with sticks, swords, and sabres. This multifaceted nature of the profession is genuinely enlightening and commands respect.

James Sang Lee's journey is a testament to the multifaceted nature of this profession.

Personally, there was always the belief that action stars were born; this couldn't be further from the truth. They are shaped, moulded and trained to be the best versions of themselves.

If we wind the clock backwards to a time when action movies somehow locked a story around a

hero, the audience had di erent expectations.

Little did we know that movie stars such as Bruce Lee could greatly in uence future generations with his groundbreaking martial arts skills and unique approach to action. His in uence can be seen in the works of Jackie Chan, Jet Li, and even modern action stars like Donnie Yen. A conceptual model of how a martial artist should carry out ght scenes, which involved a combination of physical prowess, technical skill, and a deep understanding of the art of combat, meant that they could really ght and handle weapons in a way that the camera could, in those days, portray authentic scenes to an everdemanding audience that was increasingly sophisticated and discerning in their expectations of action sequences.

It was not just about boasting muscle mass or an athletic build. message from Michael. I was surprised and excited that he got in touch.

It was late on a Thursday night; I couldn't sleep, so I decided to ick through my phone. Scrolling through Instagram, Michael's account jumped out at me for some unknown reason.

Subconsciously I think it could have been his name that drew interest. With over 3.4K followers and an actor, I wanted to reach out.

A HIGHER POWER

When I rst started this magazine in 2020, I had in mind that I wanted to interview people who could facilitate change, an in uence that could impact lives and, on some level, set a standard that others would strive to reach.

Like so many, there was a powerful in uence from artists like Prince and Michael Jackson. I saw acting as a profession when so many back in the day didn't. I had applied to drama school, but I was in a gap year and was away when the letter of acceptance arrived in the post. That was probably one of those moments that could have altered my timeline.

There was no hesitation in piecing a message together; I have to admit that after the send button was pressed, I placed it on a table as there was little or no chance of a response. It was the following day, about 4 pm, when I received a

How did acting nd you?

How would your peers describe you?

Missing that letter must have been fate, he was a true Londoner, and the irony was that he was away. As the interviewer, I could sense that this one fact played a big part in his life. It was a series of events that would see Michael fuse naturally with acting, dancing and singing.

His personality would reinforce those qualities; you couldn't help but notice how those qualities were re ected in his work.

Was your dream unusual?

In my case, it was natural; I had the backing of my parents, they both supported me when I attended drama club. There was no discussion, and they could see that I was taking it very seriously. That support mechanism was essential, and I feel blessed that I had it.

You have been blessed to feature in Fantastic beasts. Was this a milestone for you?

Every project was a masterclass; I was surrounded by talent. Being involved with projects like Tarzan and in the presence of stars like Jude law was a learning process for me.

The pandemic had a profound impact on every sector. How would you describe the situation now?

A FLAIR FOR LANGUAGES I spent time in Senegal You speak Japanese & French; do you have a natural air for languages?

I spent time in Senegal and Japan, and I think you want to understand, so I did; I love languages.

What does your future look like?

I would love to write a book someday. I was only 16 years old when I helped young o enders. It was a life-changing experience, and I have some excellent content to write about.

Your showreel shows depth; it's like a natural shift between di erent styles. How do you get into character?

I'm not method, but I try and picture the circumstances around the character. I try to think and behave like I was that person, and I question myself about every aspect. It helps me to be the best that I can be.

Has streaming opened up roads of opportunity, or does it create too much competition?

Competition is a good thing; it helps me be grounded and pushes me to be the best version of myself.

In the past year, Ashley has been nominated multiple times for "best actress" around the globe for her role in a short lm called "Kielia," which is currently in the lm festival circuit. She is set to lm a movie in September called "Blue Moon Rising," and recently performed at 54 Below in New York City in a new musical called "Boy On Billboard," which is hopefully headed to Broadway. Last year, she became a published author in a book titled "Chosen to Live," in which she shared a healing story. Currently, Ashley is co-writing a TV series and a rom-com, and she hopes to act in them as well. These projects are expected to be streaming by next year. When she's not acting, she works at a safe house with survivors of sex tra cking, supporting them on their healing journeys and helping them to rebuild their lives.
