Editor of SCUBA magazine, Simon Rogerson, travelled with us on an extraordinary trip to South Africa with a quest to witness the famous annual ‘Sardine Run’.

I

t was my third day out on the inflatable. We’d been covering up to 50 miles a day, scouring South Africa’s wild coast for the elusive baitballs that attract a parade of predators in midJuly. There was no shortage of action – bottlenose and common dolphins, several humpbacks and one southern right whale – but the famous schools were proving hard to pin down. There had been a few tantalising moments when we got close – on day one, a Bryde’s whale burst though the swell and devoured a school in a single gulp.

The baitball was, briefly, an awesome thing to see.

So there I was, feeling sweaty in my 7mm wetsuit … and then everything changed. John, the driver, received a tip-off and all of a sudden we were on the move. Whatever had been spotted was a) out of the ordinary and b) not likely to hang around. The unmistakable sight of black and white shapes breaking the surface meant only one thing – a pod of orcas. The skipper sized up their behaviour and said: ‘We’re going to motor ahead of them and drop you in the water.’ It was too good an opportunity to pass up. Behind my mask I felt unnaturally calm, almost as if I was somewhere else watching it

happen. I finned away from the wash of the boat’s engines and looked down at shafts of sunlight cutting through the water. A dark shape broke the surface, maybe 15 metres away. Where before I was sunburned and sluggish, I was now coursing with adrenaline and completely in the moment.

I lifted the camera to my eyes and somehow the autofocus managed to lock on to this astonishing, perfect animal as she swam towards me. There was no fear. I remember thinking: ‘Oh! She’s just a big dolphin’, as the orca approached and dived, looking up at me

as I froze mid-water. For this fleeting encounter with the ocean’s alpha predator, I will always be grateful.

I had five days on the Sardine Run and saw truly amazing things, including sharks and dolphins feeding on an anchovy shoal. Friends on different boats got in the water with right whales and humpbacks. You never know what you’re going to see, and you have to be prepared for long periods of quiet, punctuated by moments of frenzied action. But when the Sardine Run delivers, be ready to reap the rewards.

Secrets of the South Atlantic Whale sharks, devil rays & endemic fish The little-known, far-flung island of St Helena is fast gaining a reputation for extraordinary whale shark encounters, huge shoals of fish and endemics.

Marine conservationist and multimedia expert Danny Copeland describes what to expect on our group trip to St Helena.

aving spent over six weeks working with conservationists and scientists on the remote island of St Helena, I can say wholeheartedly that this magical island is one of the most unique and breathtaking destinations on the planet. It boasts a remarkable population of adult whale sharks that is not only of growing conservation importance, but also consists of the largest and most inquisitive individual whale sharks I’ve ever encountered.

Snorkelling with more than one shark, near-motionless in the water beside you, is the sort of encounter that marine life enthusiasts’ dreams are made of!

St Helena’s dive sites are varied and exciting in their own right, offering far more than you might expect to see in a mid-Atlantic, tropical

corner of the ocean. Visitors will be treated to wrecks, beautiful caverns, squadrons of devil rays, and schools of endemic butterfly fish – all within a 10 to 25-minute RIB journey out of Jamestown. Oh, and let’s not forget the ridiculously clear visibility that’s only possible in deep, midocean waters such as the ones that wrap around the island. Back on land, St Helena has a unique history that is worth extended time topside. Sculpted by breathtaking volcanic mountains and cloud forest valleys, its vistas and varied habitats are looked after by a community of ‘Saints’, who are more endearing and welcoming than any group of people I’ve ever visited.

Big Fish Encounters Maldives Travel Consultant Jobi Chan, new to the Dive Worldwide team, fondly recalls her time in the Maldives’ South Ari Atoll with her favourite fish, the mighty whale shark.

H

ong Kong born and raised, I chose to learn and complete my dive instructor course in a small tranquil island in the Maldives which was followed by teaching in a resort in the South Ari Atoll.

I left the busy city life not just because I enjoy the barefoot island vibes, but also because these gentle giants capture my heart. The whale shark is a harmless majestic sea creature, living in the depths of the ocean. In the Maldives, people can spot them swimming in shallow waters to regulate their temperature – this is the most popular excursion in the South Ari Atoll. I was lucky to work as a diving instructor in this atoll and the encounters with whale sharks along the outer reef between Maamigili and Dhigurah Island were undoubtedly my favourite experience.

Whale sharks swim gracefully in the shallow water with their huge mouths open, filtering the water for food. There is nothing quite as magical as your first ever sighting of a whale shark in the ocean. Coming face to face with them while we snorkel or dive is something I will never forget. Everyone feels blessed with this once-in-a-lifetime experience in the water with this beautiful creature. My group of divers almost always came to the surface with a big smile just like the whale shark! Mantas, turtles, Napoleon wrasse, schools of fusiliers,

oriental sweet lips and blue striped snapper are also common sightings in South Ari, to name just a few.

There are also over 50 recognised dive sites in the local area. Rheeti Thila, Kudarah Thila and Machchafushi Wreck (aka Kudimaa Wreck) are some of my favourites, but the whale sharks hold the top spot!

A typical day of whale shark encounters begins early in the morning with a boat ride on a dhoni (a traditional wooden boat in the Maldives) to the South Ari Marine Protected Area (SAMPA). With almost year-round whale shark and manta ray sightings, it is easy to understand why South Ari is such a draw for divers from around the world.

Before I jumped into the water with my group of divers, I usually gave them a briefing on the importance of following the rules of conduct when we swim or dive with these gentle giants. This included keeping the distance to at least four metres from the tail or three metres from the body, only swimming and diving along the side of the whale shark and avoiding excessive flash photography.

We also encouraged divers, if possible, to take a photo of the left side of body behind the gills and above the pectoral

fin - from a safe distance to submit to the online shark database. Doing this is a direct contribution to a better understanding and protection of these amazing animals.

The Maldives Whale Shark Research Programme (MWSRP) has even enabled tourists to identify the whale sharks they have swum with using the Big Fish Network mobile app.

In the South Ari Atoll there are a several sought-after resorts which I recommend including Vilamendhoo Island Resort, Sun Island Resort & Spa and Boutique Beach, all of which are featured on our website.

I can’t wait to return to the Maldives, to stay at one of the wonderful resorts and to say hello to the whale sharks once again.

Dazzling Reefs, Critters & Sharks Papua New Guinea Dive Worldwide Manager, Phil North, describes his trip to PNG, diving on the best reefs he’s ever experienced in ‘jaw-dropping’ visibility!

A

s we circled above Port Moresby, our flight captain came on the intercom to inform passengers he would make a final attempt to land.

At the end of a long journey from the UK, we had found magical ribbons of low-lying mist between the hills and mountains, obscuring our final approach. After waiting for the early morning sun to burn away the worst of the mist, our skilled pilot made another approach and, thankfully, got us safely to the ground. Just getting to Papua New Guinea can be an adventure.

I was staying at Tufi Dive Resort and, as soon as I was able, I explored the house reef – a muck dive with nudibranch and other critters hidden amongst debris and WWII relics (Tufi was a base for the Australians in WWII). The real draws are

the outer reefs and bommies that dot this region. Oh, my! What reefs they are!

Jaw-dropping visibility meant we barely needed to dive; the entire reef top was clearly visible from our boat. The reefs here drop down to around 600 metres, ensuring vibrant coral and marine life, and also the promise of pelagics.

Our visit in May happened to coincide with the best time of year for possible hammerhead sightings, including rare white hammerheads that can occasionally be seen in this area. There are also opportunities to see grey reef, silvertip and reef sharks, plus tuna, trevally and the like. Reef life includes batfish, barracuda, clownfish, turtles, endless fusiliers and so much more. We managed two full days’ diving on the outer reefs, days that will be treasured

It is so difficult to compare one dive region to another, but I genuinely think these might be the finest reefs I have ever dived. It was such a privilege.

And did we see the elusive white hammerhead? We certainly did!

Access All Areas Insider guide to accessible diving holidays Travel Consultant Cath Bates has worked and dived with plenty of divers, some of whom require a little extra when planning their next trip …

A

s an instructor who worked abroad for 11 years, I would see many disabled divers playing it safe and going back to the same destination over and over again.

Accessible holidays in general are not yet the norm as wheelchair-accessible facilities are not the law in many countries. Finding an accessible diving holiday can therefore be somewhat of a challenge, but one that we’re up for!

I have met some pretty inspirational people along the way. Below they share their stories and some top tips to make sure an accessible diving holiday is a success.

Laura Collinson (main picture) and I are old diving buddies. We used to work together before her accident and she began her dive adventures back in 1999 in Egypt with the Back Up Trust. She has since dived in more than 11 destinations including Coron and Moalboal in the Philippines, and Lembeh in Indonesia.

It’s not all been plain sailing and she quickly realised that questions need to be asked before just turning up. ‘Check door widths and bathroom dimensions. Look at pictures online and discuss with the dive centre the help you require and the type of boats used.’

Laura recommends joining a dive club as a great way of getting support and assistance as well as chatting to other disabled divers and support groups such as the Scuba Trust.

Alan Kenny is 78 years young. We’ve dived together in Egypt and Indonesia and he often goes on trips with The Scuba Trust. When planning a diving holiday, his priority is all about the marine life and then he looks at the logistics.

Whilst a wheelchair accessible room is essential, he can do without a roll-in shower if there’s a shower on the dive boat. For him what is really important is a dive team and boat crew who can ‘think outside the box’ and listen to his requirements.

‘I describe to them how I get into the water from the dive platform and on return to the boat after

diving; also how I de-kit in the water and how I need to be lifted.’

One of Alan’s favourite places to visit is Tasik Ria Resort & Spa. He’s been back plenty of times and it’s mainly thanks to the staff, who have become like family and are always willing to help.

For Invictus Games athlete Luke Delahunty it’s all about access to the bed and bathroom facilities. Anything else is a bonus! During a liveaboard trip in the Maldives he was carried pretty much everywhere. ‘It’s a means to an end. If you want to dive at a manta cleaning station, expect to be manhandled!’

Luke and I completed our Instructor Development Course (IDC) together in 2004.

He has also experienced the Sardine Run in South Africa, with all the added hassle of a drysuit. On the practical side, he looks for a dive centre with a ‘can-do’ attitude to enable him to enjoy diving, just like everyone else. He recommends travelling with a shower curtain and a disposable portable urinal, especially when travelling on a boat which may not be set up for wheelchair access. Diving with a group of friends is also important, alleviating worries about asking for help.

‘Beyond all the practical stuff, when I go on a dive trip I want great diving and to make amazing memories – just like everyone else.’

The Coral Triangle Discover the world’s richest reefs!

T

he Coral Triangle covers an imaginary area in the western Pacific Ocean identified by scientists as having the highest diversity of corals (almost 800 species) in the world, 2,000 species of reef fish including numerous endemics, plus whales, dolphins, porpoises, dugongs and whale sharks … not to mention some of the most beautiful jungleclad islands and clear turquoise seas the world has to offer.

Stretching from the Philippines, Borneo and Indonesia in the west to Papua New Guinea and the Solomon Islands in the east, the Coral Triangle is remote and still relatively untouched by tourism. We offer liveaboard and resort-based holidays to many of these destinations, and highlight some of our favourites below.

Indonesia’s Raja Ampat Islands lie in West Papua, in the epicentre of the Coral Triangle, and this area is generally accepted by scientists as being the ‘bull’s eye’ of world coral diversity. Resorts are accessed by boat transfer and can be visited throughout the year. Alternatively, join a liveaboard for the ultimate Raja Ampat experience. Elsewhere in Indonesia, we offer trips to the lesserknown destinations of Alor, Kalimaya, Sali Bay and Ambon (which can be twinned with Raja Ampat). Expect vibrant and colourful reefs, plenty of macro life, schooling barracuda, countless schools of fish (over 1,200 known species are found here), manta ray encounters and plenty of drift diving in the fast currents which help feed the nutrient-rich waters.

We offer a range of holiday options in Papua New Guinea and its islands of New Britain and New Ireland.

Best known are Kimbe Bay (Walindi Plantation Resort) and Tufi – with over 200 dive sites to explore (including WWII wrecks), divers will be amazed at the vivid colours, vibrant, healthy and beautiful reefs waiting to be discovered. Recommended for underwater photographers and divers who enjoy pristine reefs.

The Philippines can be dived at any time of the year and are very good value for money. The dry season offers the best all-round diving conditions and marine life encounters as well as ideal conditions on Apo reef. March to May offers the best chance of whale shark encounters at Donsol, while if you’re after mantas as well as thresher sharks in Malapascua, September’s your best bet. With fabulous resorts and a range of liveaboard options (such as to Tubbataha), the Philippines is excellent for marine diversity, critter action, thresher sharks and pelagics.

It’s also a popular and relatively accessible destination within the Coral Triangle.

Helping Turtles in PNG Support for marine charities We are excited to be expanding our charitable donations to marine conservation organisations and projects to those close to our heart. Our inaugural pledge went towards helping turtles in Papua New Guinea.

F

or the past few years we have been working to support some incredible marine charities.

Project AWARE Foundation does some amazing work on behalf of divers for marine conservation. Bite-Back Shark & Marine Conservation is an energetic, innovative and pioneering shark and marine conservation charity, which aims to protect and re-educate people about sharks as well as campaigning to end the sale of shark in Britain. We also supported Deptherapy, a rehabilitation charity which runs specially tailored scuba diving programmes for seriously injured members of the UK armed forces and others, in organising trips to Truk Lagoon and Grenada.

We are pledging to increase our conservation efforts. We are pleased to offer continued support to the above charities, as well as supporting more grass roots organisations such as the fantastic Lissenung Island Turtle Conservation in the northern reaches of Papua New Guinea.

Turtle numbers are in decline in Papua New Guinea. New Ireland has been populated by humans for almost 40,000 years, and turtles and their eggs have always been a traditional food source. Due to population growth, as well as the well-known threats of fishing nets and plastic pollution, the local turtle population is now under serious threat and declining rapidly.

The project’s director, Angelique Amon, describes the initiative: ‘We started our Turtle Conservation Programme in 2013 in order to protect the remaining turtles as well as to educate the local population about turtle and environmental protection.

We have identified two nearby, uninhabited islands as common turtle nesting grounds: Edmago Island and Ral Island.’

‘Over 90% of our nests are from hawksbill turtles (Eretmochelys imbricata), while the remaining nests are from green turtles (Chelonia mydas). Hawksbill turtles are classified as ‘Critically Endangered’, and Green Turtles are listed as ‘Endangered’, by IUCN as well as CITES.’ ‘During the nesting season, from early September through to mid-February, we travel to those two islands early every morning. Once there, we follow any new turtle tracks, find the nest and carefully relocate the eggs to nesting boxes back on Lissenung Island. The hatchlings emerge from the nest approximately 60 days later, and we collect important data and measurements before releasing them.

So far, we have released over 30,000 live hatchlings. In the past few seasons our green turtle nests have increased from none to nine.’

It is estimated that only about one in 1,000 turtles will survive until adulthood, so the efforts made and data collected at Lissenung are vital in helping the survival of the species. They also educate the local people about the importance of turtle conservation, in the hope of creating a more sustainable future for the turtles in Papua New Guinea.
