WILD EDGE WALKER NATURE WANDERS
Join Amanda, a Nature and Forest Therapy Guide on International Forest Bathing Day for a wander to reclaim that sense of wonder and awe. The wanders are based on the Japanese practise of Shinrin-Yoku or Forest Bathing, the art of being with nature. This is a chance to put cares aside, and come back to a place of peace inside. You will gather together first at Le Sentier des Moulins in Waterworks Valley then wander solo for a series of invitations to return to our body’s way of perceiving the natural world. Along the way, experiences will be shared together. You might want to bring a journal along, or sketch book. Finally, you will have some tea together, and home-made cake. Time: 9.30am Meeting Point: Green glade with the Millennium Stone Parking: Available at the junction of Le Chemin des Moulins and Ruelle de Saint-Clair, and along the road adjacent to the small park area. WADER WATCH
Learn to identify the new arrivals who will be spending those long winter months with us on the east coast of the Island. Listen to the mournful cry of a Curlew, separate a Dunlin from a Sanderling, a Turnstone from a Grey Plover and many more. Keep an eye out for the Peregrine Falcon who will stir the resting flocks into a crazy frenzy. Please bring binoculars if you have them, there will be some optics available to borrow.
THE SOUTH WEST CORNER UNCOVERED
Enjoy a beautiful cliff path walk from the Les Creux Country Park to Beauport and Corbière, past the stunning granite cliffs and bays of the south west corner. The walk will uncover some of the geological sites and consider the role climate change has in carving out the landscape. You will also see the impact of quarrying and the railway plus of course spectacular views of Corbiere Lighthouse. The walk will return via the railway walk. ST MARY’S PARISH WALK
Guided walk around Grouville Marsh and its environs with the National Trust of Jersey’s Lands Manager. The marsh is not normally open to the public, so this is a rare opportunity to walk around it and to see the work that has taken place, why it is a site of special interest and why it is so important.
Old granite houses are sheltered in the tree-shaded lanes of St Mary which emerge on the heights overlooking the National Trust for Jersey lands on the clifftop. Enjoy views across to the other Islands and across the rural landscape and hear about the history through the centuries.

10 WAVING FIELDS AND WINDMILL WALK Take a walk in that most Jersey of Parishes - St Ouen. We’ll leave the Parish hall via green lanes and visit the 6000 year old dolmen, then stroll onto the “waving fields” where for hundreds of years wives and girlfriends would wave goodbye to the sailors and fishermen as they went off on hazardous journeys to every part of the known world, with its spectacular views across the calm - or raging - Atlantic ocean. Then back past the windmill and other reminders of a much more tranquil way of life. VIKING SHEEP WALK
Join guide John Pinel, on a circular walk from Sorel Point on the Island’s north coast with its wonderful views of nearby Normandy and the other Channel Islands. See rare breed multi horned Manx Loaghtan sheep believed to be the closest breed to those brought to Jersey by the Vikings. Learn about conservation grazing and the restoration of the redbilled Choughs, once extinct in Jersey around 1900, and other efforts being made to save coastal birds. Friday 11 September 13 DISCOVER THE FIEF OF BELLOZANNE The medieval fief of Bellozanne is synonymous with the vingtaine of Mont-à-labbé. Starting with ‘Bellozanne Abbey’, one of the original ‘tennements’ of the fief, this walk will continue to Fern Valley, one of the Trusts most beautiful woodlands, discovering the stories behind today’s landscape along the way. Starting from the car park at Faulkner’s Fisheries we will spend time looking at the Geological Site of Special Interest at Le Pulec before heading to the beach to find evidence of previous sea levels in the peat beds. From here we will walk along the lanes and footpaths up to Grantez with its Dolmen and amazing views across the bay and then back to L’Etacq. Join Tina Hull, local botanist, on a wildflower walk around The Elms, the headquarters of the National Trust. Tina will walk around the walled garden, peep into the wildflower meadow and explore the orchard and nearby hedgerows. Learn about the folklore, science, myth and magic of all the wonderful wildflowers you will see on this short stroll. The terrain on this walk will be on relatively flat but uneven ground. Enjoy a bracing cliff path walk from Grosnez castle and the lighthouse and then head south towards the Pinnacle where you can look down on this important prehistoric site and for those that wish to, a walk down to look at the remains of the Gallo Roman temple and other prehistoric stones. From here the walk will continue inland across the flint knapping sites of Le Canal De Squez and back to Grosnez. - for Walkers during the ‘Walking Through Autumn’ event • Bring refreshments and some snacks/ packed lunch to eat before/after your walk. • Wear suitable footwear– some of the walks are at low water and you will get wet! Others are on soft sand, uneven ground or cliff paths so make sure that your footwear is suitable for whatever terrain you encounter. • Wear layers or bring a waterproof – so you are dressed whatever the weather. • If not driving, bring a bus timetable so you know what time your next bus is. • Leave nothing but your footprints and take any rubbish home. • Many of the walks are circular but some start at one place and finish at another. Make sure that you can get back! • Most of the guides are happy to have well behaved dogs on leads, but please check before you come along. • Bring a camera so you can take pictures of what you see along the way and binoculars for bird lovers.
Meet the Guides AMANDA BOND Amanda is a Member of the ANFT – a Nature and Forest Therapy Guide and has worked with the National Trust for Jersey on its #LoveNature Festival leading Earth Walks. Forest Bathing is a new venture.
TOM BUNTING Tom has drawn on his 20 years’ experience as a Blue Badge Guide and 30 years as a teacher to inform hundreds of people about the many amazing features of Jersey. This year, he has chosen three all-time favourite walks to share with the lucky visitors to the island, all delivered in his engaging, relaxed and humorous style.
SUE GORIN Sue comes from a farming family and can trace her line back to the 1300’s in Jersey. She is passionate about Jersey and together with her love of family history she has combined these two aspects to bring you this tour. She is a member of the CI History Society but has branched out to research the different aspects of Jersey life in the town.
SUE HARDY Twenty years’ experience as a Blue Badge Guide with a wealth of knowledge about the Island and its people, a life-long Jersey resident with family connections to farming and local business. Sue is a founding member of the Jersey Walking Group, an active member of The National Trust for Jersey, the Société Jersiaise, CI Family History Society, and local groups Trees for Life and Action for Wildlife, also the Association of Lighthouse Keepers.
TINA HULL Tina Hull BSc (Hons) Botany. Tina read Botany at Durham University and has a particular interest in how plants are adapted to their environment and their folk uses Tina works closely with the National Trust for Jersey and is a Bronze Badge Guide.
NICKY MANSELL Nicky is a jersey blue badge guide and retired geography teacher. She has lived in the island for 36 years and is especially interested in uncovering the secrets of our landscapes from the first rock formations through ice ages and prehistoric times to today. Nicky is a keen adventurer, Walker and sea kayaker.
KAZZ PADIDAR Kazz is the Director of Wild adventure, a company that provides adventure activities in Jersey as well as overseas. Jersey is a playground for the adventure enthusiast with a great variety of outdoor pursuits to choose from. With towering sea cliffs, stunning coastline, and award winning beaches.
JON PARKES Jon is the Lands Manager at the National Trust where he has worked for the past 15 years. Jon looks forward to taking walkers around some of the areas and projects that he and his team have managed and maintained over the years, some of which are rarely open to the public.
Meet the Guides JOHN PINEL John trained in Botany and has been working as an Ecologist for the past 25 years. He is involved in numerous local Natural History groups and enjoys sharing his passion for our environment with others.
NEIL SINGLETON AND ALLI CALDEIRA Neil and Alli run Birding Tours Jersey. Neil is an expert ornithologist and Alli is a botanist. They both have a passion for all aspects of local wildlife and enjoy sharing their knowledge with visitors and local residents alike.
STUART FELL DIP. ARCH, R.I.B.A., I.H.B.C Studied architecture at Leeds where he developed an interest in historic buildings and townscape. He has held Conservation Officer roles in a number of planning authorities, including the City of Chester, and later served as Chief Technical Officer for Tunbridge Wells Borough Council. After three years as a UK Planning Inspector he returned to his main interest, the historic built environment, by taking up the position of Conservation Officer/Urban Designer for the States of Jersey in 1995. Retired after working ten years as a private consultant, he now devotes much of his time to local urban history research.
