19 CIRCULAR WALK FROM THE ELMS THROUGH ST PETER’S
Join Nicky Mansell and meander around the refurbished headland at Plémont to see what the National Trust for Jersey has achieved since demolishing the holiday camp that once dominated this part of the Island. The walk continues down to the point and onto the beach to explore the caves. This walk involves some clambering over rocks and you may get your feet wet as there are pools at the entrance of the caves! - for Walkers during the ‘Walking Through Autumn’ event • Bring refreshments and some snacks/ packed lunch to eat before/after your walk. • Wear suitable footwear– some of the walks are at low water and you will get wet! Others are on soft sand, uneven ground or cliff paths so make sure that your footwear is suitable for whatever terrain you encounter. • Wear layers or bring a waterproof – so you are dressed whatever the weather. • If not driving, bring a bus timetable so you know what time your next bus is. • Leave nothing but your footprints and take any rubbish home. • Many of the walks are circular but some start at one place and finish at another. Make sure that you can get back! • Most of the guides are happy to have well behaved dogs on leads, but please check before you come along. • Bring a camera so you can take pictures of what you see along the way and binoculars for bird lovers.
Meet the Guides JON PARKES
JERSEY BAT GROUP
Jon is the Lands Manager at the National Trust where he has worked for the past 15 years. Jon looks forward to taking walkers around some of the areas and projects that he and his team have managed and maintained over the years, some of which are rarely open to the public.
The Jersey Bat Group aim to help protect the Island’s bats. It is a registered charity and its statement is:
ARTHUR LAMY Arthur has been a Blue Badge Guide since 1996. A very keen walker and cyclist, Arthur works as a tourist guide occasionally, but over the years has led the (former) biannual ‘Around the Island’ walk and has led groups for Explore adventure holidays, The University of Greenwich and Nauta Dutilh UK, amongst others.
BOB TOMPKINS Bob is the Chairman of the National Trust Lands Advisory Board amongst many other hats that he wears! Bob believes in variety being the spice of life and tries varying his walks and their subject matter according to that belief. Expect the unexpected.
KAZZ PADIDAR Kazz is the Director of Wild Adventures, a company that provides adventure activities in Jersey as well as overseas. Jersey is a playground for the adventure enthusiast with a great variety of outdoor pursuits to choose from. With towering sea cliffs, stunning coastline, and award winning beaches.
AMANDA BOND Amanda is a Member of the ANFT – a Nature and Forest Therapy Guide and has worked with the National Trust for Jersey on its #LoveNature Festival leading Earth Walks. Forest Bathing is a new venture.
To survey and monitor bat populations, roosts, hibernacula and foraging sites in Jersey and provide information and education regarding bats to the Jersey public. Where possible to take steps to help protect local bat populations, in line with recommendations from the Species Action Plan. Anyone with an interest in bats is welcome to join the group. They hold regular meetings and run a summer survey of the Island’s roosts. The group stage member’s walks and public bat walks and opportunities to attend presentations about bats in Jersey and worldwide.
ANNE HADEN Anne is a very active botanist that works very closely with the National Trust for Jersey, a keen botanist and the Island recorder for The Botanical Society for Britain and Ireland.
JEAN TRELEVEN Jersey born with family origins extending back to the Norman period. Jean has a farming background and career in primary and secondary education, especially history and geography. Jean thoroughly enjoys sharing her knowledge and passion for Jersey with both locals and visitors.
NEIL SINGLETON AND ALLI CALDEIRA Neil and Alli run Jersey Birding Tours. Neil is a keen ornithologist and both Neil and Alli are keen nature lovers who love imparting their knowledge and passions with visitors and local residents alike.
SUE HARDY Twenty years’ experience as a Blue Badge Guide with a wealth of knowledge about the Island and its people, a life-long Jersey resident with family connections to farming and local business. Sue is a founding member of the Jersey Walking Group, an active member of The National Trust for Jersey, the Société Jersiaise, CI Family History Society, and local groups Trees for Life and Action for Wildlife, also the Association of Lighthouse Keepers.
WILL KIRBY Will is a seasoned Ranger with the National Trust for Jersey and has worked for the Trust for many years, a keen sailor, Will has completed the Clipper Round The World race where he met his Jersey born wife Cathy.
NICKY MANSELL Nicky is a Jersey Blue Badge Guide and retired geography teacher. She has lived in the Island for 36 years and is especially interested in uncovering the secrets of our landscapes from the first rock formations through ice ages and prehistoric times to today. Nicky is a keen adventurer, walker and sea kayaker.
TINA HULL Tina Hull BSc (Hons) Botany. Tina read Botany at Durham University and has a particular interest in how plants are adapted to their environment and their folk uses. Tina works closely with the National Trust for Jersey and is a Bronze Badge Guide.
