GROUVILLE COUNTRY LANES
This wonderful circular walk affords some fantastic countryside and seascape views around the lovely parish of Grouville. Enjoy meandering past hidden old properties and quiet country lanes and pathways. Aside from an initial climb up Ruelle des Tours to access the field systems, the walk is flat or down hill. There is a very short bit of walk along La Grande Route de St Clement on the way back to Holme Grown but other than that the tarmac sections are in small lanes. The paths might be a little muddy but nothing a set of walking boots or wellies cannot handle! Lovely countryside views, small lanes and hopefully light vehicle traffic. THE MONT-A-L’ABBÉ LANDSCAPE
The vingtaine of Mont-à-L’Abbé in St Helier, is synonymous with the medieval fief of Bellozanne. Starting at ‘Bellozanne Abbey’ one of the Trust’s more recent acquisitions, this walk continues to Fern Valley, one of the Trusts most beautiful woodlands and ends at a modern dairy farm with medieval origins. Discover the relationship between the landscape and the features you see today. The terrain includes steps, rough paths and green roads. At the end of the walk why not enjoy lunch or refreshments at the Potato Shack?

RECLAMATION, IMMIGRATION AND DIVERSIFICATION
Jersey society saw massive changes from the late 1700’s to the early 1900’s. Join guide Melanie Cavey on this gentle walk around Liberty Wharf and St Helier harbour and hear the stories of how this former area of sand dunes was reclaimed and warehouses, merchant’s homes, bustling hotels and a railway built and the old dilapidated port developed into an impressive harbour. ALONG THE BACK ROADS LINEAR WALK
If your usual stroll from St. Helier to St. Aubin is along the busy coastal promenade, why not enjoy the ‘back roads’ for a change? Starting in Victoria park and up to the heights with wonderful views over St Helier, through pine woods, and into an unusual cemetery. A WALK THROUGH GOREY
Enjoy a journey from village to tower and castle and back again. Your guide Roger will take you on a time travelling adventure through Jersey history with spectacular views, especially on a clear day. Wander through the medieval village of Gorey, and up to the headland of Mont St Nicholas, to find a hidden 6000 year old megalithic tomb and a 19th Century defensive tower. Descend to the Castle, which was once the headquarters of an 18th Century spymaster and Prince, and on to the harbour to hear about harbour life past and present, and stroll along the tracks of the old Jersey Eastern Railway. The guided walk is in the most part a gentle ramble. Although it contains a flight of steep steps, it is possible to bypass these if necessary.

St Clement maybe the smallest and by far the most densely populated of Jersey parishes, but it’s also got many wellhidden countryside areas and wide-open spaces and we will access quiet natural areas with links to the old railway. 13 TRADES, TRAINS AND OCCUPATION For many centuries the Gorey headland has been dominated by its imposing castle. However, during the 1800’s and 1900’s the old port below and the adjoining Grouville beach took on new ‘lives’. First the fishing and shipbuilding industries boomed and then the Eastern Railway arrived along with the first tourists. But the 1900’s saw darker changes when the Gorey area became a focus of activity during the 1940 - 45 German Occupation. Evidence of all these changes and some stories of the period make these earlier times come alive on this scenic walk. 28 FROM DANES TO GERMANS AND EVERYTHING IN BETWEEN
This walk will start at the Priory Inn and go down to Devils Hole to look at the amazing natural blow hole and the coastal landscape of the north coast. From here we will go up on to the headland and in to Le Mourier Valley where there is a large tree planting initiative. We will look out for the Choughs which fly around the area as part of the Birds on the Edge project and hopefully see some of the Manx Loaghton sheep. This walk will also take in some of the lanes of St Marys.
Explore the picturesque lanes running through the centre of the island. Discover the effect that the Danes and the Germans had on our Island’s history and landscape, and find out how the Danish legacy remains present in the administration of the Island today. You will explore field systems and agricultural practices and uncover magnificent 18th century granite houses, and 20th century German fortifications, not to mention some ancient water mills. The terrain can, in some parts be uneven, so suitable attire and footwear is recommended.

Starting at the Royal Jersey Showground, this wonderful circular walk will meander down to Trinity School, before turning left into La Rue du Mont Pellier, the Island’s first ‘Scenic Lane’. The walk then joins up with the Trinity Millennium Trail before heading back through quiet country lanes in this beautiful parish. Given the time of year there will be a great deal to see along the way from birds to plants and everything between.

DEEP TIME WALK (WEST EDITION)
Join us for a guided walk along the west coast and take an exhilarating, whistlestop tour of Jersey’s deep time history. Meet your guide at the Watersplash for a 1.2km walk along the beach to Le Braye and journey half a million years through time with every step, uncovering the processes which over millions of years have shaped the Island we know today. The walk is in association with the Aspiring Jersey Island Geopark project. 34 LIVING WITH THE ENEMY – LINEAR WALK It was 80 years ago in April 1942 that, amongst other issues, the German authorities suggested banning radio sets, 6d (2½ pence) banknotes were issued, a night time curfew was introduced and Jersey started to live on ‘Berlin time’. Hear more details about these and other events that affected the civilian population of Jersey during the five long years of Occupation. Starting from the Gunsite café you’ll take a stroll along the ancient ‘Perquage’ (Sanctuary path) past buildings and remains of the German forces up to a long forgotten and overgrown antiaircraft post before finally arriving at the Jersey War Tunnels. Why not visit the Jersey War Tunnels after the walk and get a bus back to town? • Bring refreshments and some snacks/ packed lunch to eat before/after your walk. • Wear suitable footwear– some of the walks are at low water and you will get wet! Others are on soft sand, uneven ground or cliff paths so make sure that your footwear is suitable for whatever terrain you encounter. • Wear layers or bring a waterproof – so you are dressed whatever the weather. • If not driving, bring a bus timetable so you know what time your next bus is. • Leave nothing but your footprints and take any rubbish home. • Many of the walks are circular but some start at one place and finish at another. Make sure that you can get back! • Most of the guides are happy to have well behaved dogs on leads, but please check before you come along. • Bring a camera so you can take pictures of what you see along the way and binoculars for bird lovers.

Meet the Guides AMANDA BOND Amanda is a Member of the ANFT – a Nature and Forest Therapy Guide and has worked with the National Trust for Jersey on its #LoveNature Festival leading Earth Walks. TOM BUNTING Tom has drawn on his 20 years’ experience as a Blue Badge Guide and 30 years as a teacher to inform hundreds of people about the many amazing features of Jersey all delivered in his engaging, relaxed and humorous style. ALEX BUXTON Alex is a Countryside Ranger with the Trust and supports the team in conserving and maintaining land and footpaths together with undertaking wildlife surveys and working with volunteers. Before joining the Trust Alex studied Animal Behaviour at Plymouth University and went on to work with conservation projects focussed on surveying migrating and breeding bird populations.
MELANIE CAVEY Melanie Cavey has considerable experience as a guide, having worked both locally and abroad on coach and walking tours. Jersey born and with a local Bronze Badge qualification she has a passion for the island and its fascinating history and beautiful environment. Melanie’s main aim is always to make Jersey more than ‘just an island’, by bringing it alive through the stories behind buildings, places and some of the many people who have contributed to Jersey’s society. STUART FELL DIP. ARCH, R.I.B.A., I.H.B.C. Studied architecture at Leeds where he developed an interest in historic buildings and townscape. He has held Conservation Officer roles in a number of planning authorities, including the City of Chester, and later served as Chief Technical Officer for Tunbridge Wells Borough Council. Stuart became the Conservation Officer/Urban Designer
for the States of Jersey in 1995. Retired after working ten years as a private consultant, he now devotes much of his time to local urban history research SUE GORIN Sue comes from a farming family and can trace her line back to the 1300’s in the Island. She is passionate about Jersey and together with her love of family history she has combined these two aspects to bring you these tours. She is a member of the CI History Society but has branched out to research the different aspects of Jersey life. She is also a Bronze badge Tourist guide. TRUDIE HAIRON-TROX Working as a travel editor, Bavarian born Trudie fell in love with Jersey and the South East coast. She now happily links her passion for marine biology, local history and culture when developing not only coastal walks and guiding international groups. Trudie is a Bronze Badge Guide.
TINA HULL BSC (HONS) BOTANY. Tina read Botany at Durham University and has a particular interest in how plants are adapted to their environment and their place in folklore and medicinal uses. Tina works closely with the National Trust for Jersey and is a Bronze Badge Guide. NICKY MANSELL Nicky is a Jersey Blue Badge guide and retired geography teacher. She has lived in the island for 36 years and is especially interested in uncovering the secrets of our landscapes from the first rock formations through ice ages and prehistoric times to today. Nicky is a keen adventurer, walker and sea kayaker. ROGER NOEL A Blue Badge Guide, and proud Jersey man who can trace his island roots back to the 14th Century. Roger’s love of history, nature and wildlife will provide you with a wealth of knowledge about Jersey’s famous Ramsar* sites, and our many Sites of Special Interest.

JON OSMONT A 2015 qualified Blue Badge Guide, Jon, who is a retired GP, was born and brought up in the Island of Jersey, where he has also spent the majority of his working life. Jon is able to trace his family roots through the generations both in Jersey, and in Normandy. He has a great love of the Island and its diverse history, culture and landscapes, and likes nothing more than to share the beauty and drama of the Island with our visitors. JON PARKES Jon is the Lands Manager at the National Trust where he has worked for the past 20 years. Jon looks forward to taking walkers around some of the areas and projects that he and his team have managed and maintained over the years.
JOHN PINEL John trained in Botany and has been working as an Ecologist for the past 25 years. He is involved in numerous local natural history groups and enjoys sharing his passion for our environment with others. John is a Council Member for the National Trust for Jersey.
JONATHAN RENOUF Jonathan Renouf is an award winning television producer who spent 20 years working for BBC television’s Science Unit. He was Executive Producer of series such as “Wonders of the Universe”, “The Sky at Night” and “How Earth Made Us”. Jonathan is a Council Member of the National Trust for Jersey. NEIL AND ALLI SINGLETON Neil and Alli run Birding Tours Jersey. Neil is a keen ornithologist and Alli’s expertise lies with wildflowers and butterflies. Both enjoy all aspects of nature and love imparting their knowledge and passions with visitors and local residents alike. BOB TOMPKINS Bob is a former Chairman of the National Trust Lands Advisory Board and member of its Council amongst many other hats that he wears! Bob believes in variety being the spice of life and tries varying his walks and their subject matter according to that belief. Expect the unexpected. JEAN TRELEVEN Jersey born Blue-Badge Guide with family origins extending back to the Norman period. Jean has a farming background and career in primary and secondary education, especially history and geography. Jean thoroughly enjoys sharing her knowledge and passion for Jersey with both locals and visitors. MARC YATES Marc Yates, a Jersey-man born and bred, has had a passion for the Island’s history since a young age, and after a legal career, is now on a mission to bring that history, as well as the Island’s archaeology, geology and fauna, alive to young and old. He is an Accredited Badged Member of the International Guild of Battlefield Guides and leads tours both on and off Island.
