VIKING SHEEP WALK
Join your guide John Pinel, on a circular walk from Sorel Point on the Island’s north coast with its wonderful views of nearby Normandy and the other Channel Islands. See rare breed multi horned Manx Loaghtan sheep believed to be the closest breed to those brought to Jersey by the Vikings. Learn about conservation grazing and the restoration of the red-billed Choughs, once extinct in Jersey, and other efforts being made to save coastal birds. TRINITY MILLENNIUM TRAIL
Starting at the Royal Jersey Showground, this circular walk will meander down to Trinity School, before turning right into La Rue du Mont Pellier, the Island’s first ‘Scenic Lane’. The walk then goes off road following farmland tracks and the Trinity Millennium Trail before heading back through quiet country lanes in this beautiful parish with its lovely countryside views.

PLÉMONT BEACH GRANITE, CAVES AND VICTORIANS
Explore rock pools and caves and discover the history of the granite rocks and intrusions and fault lines which cut through the bay. Experience a walk through the Tectonic history of the island and also a route followed by many Victorian and Edwardian tourists who came to be impressed by the savagery and wildness of the nature to be found there. The beach is always changing and sometimes there are deep pools to get into the caves so wellies, sandals (not flip flops), neoprene shoes or trainers which can get wet are essential. DISCOVER THE FIEF OF BELLOZANNE
The medieval fief of Bellozanne is synonymous with the vingtaine of Mont-à-L’Abbé. Starting at ‘Bellozanne Abbey’ one of the Trust’s more recent acquisitions, this walk will continue to Fern Valley, one of the Trusts most beautiful woodlands, discovering the stories behind today’s landscape. Join Lands Manger, Jon Parkes, as he revisits the former holiday camp site at Plémont Headland, six years after the site was acquired, cleared and returned to nature by the Trust. See how the site continues to change and hopefully catch a glimpse of some of the site’s protected species. Jon will also speak about some of the successes and challenges the Trust has faced during this exciting and on-going project. 10 THE PEOPLE OF ST BRELADE’S BAY FROM NEANDERTHAL TO TODAY This walk starts at Ouaisne. Join your guide, Nicky Mansell who will bring to life the people who have lived in the bay from prehistory to today. Nicky will take participants back to prehistoric times when you could have walked to France and mammoth roamed where the sea is now. The walk will be partly on the beach but will also take you on to the headland above La Cotte de St Brelade one of the premier Neanderthal sites of Europe. Friday 16 April 13 WILDLIFE WANDERS IN FERN VALLEY A walk around the wonderfully secluded and magical Fern Valley. We will be looking at all aspects of wildlife during this walk, identifying the woodland trees, wildflowers, birds and even some of the ferns from which the valley derives its’ name. There’s also a good chance to spot our iconic Red Squirrel high in the tree tops. Thanks to Isabel of The Union Inn for allowing us to use the car park. 14 VICTORIA TOWER WILDFLOWER AND FOLKLORE WALK Out east to one of the last Martello towers to be built in Jersey. The tower is surrounded by coastal grassland as rich in wildflowers as it is in history. The walk includes plant identification and the fascinating folklore that links these wonderful plants to us. WILDLIFE & WELLNESS WALK AT SUNSET – NORTH COAST
Breathe in the fresh sea air and admire the spectacular views across to the other islands at Sunset. The coastal paths and country lanes of St Mary are abundant with wildlife at this time of year.

Starting at L’Etacq we will look at the landscape features of the area and consider the deep history which has helped to create the landscapes. The walk will meander along a major geological boundary marking over 200 million years of rock formation and then take the steep path to Les Landes headland past the bunkers and guns from the occupation, across to one of Jerseys Mesolithic sites where many flints have been found and for those who wish, we will walk down to examine the Neolithic, Chalcolithic and Roman remains at the Pinnacle before returning to L’Etacq. Good walking footwear is essential for this walk. Learn to identify the new arrivals who have spent those long winter months with us on the east coast of the Island. Listen to the mournful cry of a Curlew, separate a Dunlin from a Sanderling, a Turnstone from a Grey Plover and many more. Keep an eye out for the Peregrine Falcon who will stir the resting flocks into a crazy frenzy. Please bring binoculars if you have them. There will be some optics available to borrow. 23 URBAN WILDFLOWER FOLKLORE WITH VIEWS OF THE BLANCHE BANQUES Even in a built up area there are plenty of wildflowers with a wealth of folklore to find out about. Tina will explore the area around Les Quennevais Sports Centre and then with just a short walk you will enjoy the views from the top of Les Blanche Banques reminding us that the truly wild is never far away from us.

Enjoy a beautiful cliff path walk from the Les Creux Country Park to Beauport and Corbiére, past the stunning granite cliffs and bays of the south west corner. The walk will uncover some of the geological sites and consider the role climate change has in carving out the landscape. You will also see the impact of quarrying and the railway plus of course spectacular views of Corbiere Lighthouse. The walk will return via the railway walk.

- for Walkers during the ‘Walking Through Spring’ event
• Bring refreshments and some snacks/ packed lunch to eat before/after your walk. • Wear suitable footwear– some of the walks are at low water and you will get wet! Others are on soft sand, uneven ground or cliff paths so make sure that your footwear is suitable for whatever terrain you encounter. • Wear layers or bring a waterproof – so you are dressed whatever the weather. • If not driving, bring a bus timetable so you know what time your next bus is. • Leave nothing but your footprints and take any rubbish home. • Many of the walks are circular but some start at one place and finish at another. Make sure that you can get back! • Most of the guides are happy to have well behaved dogs on leads, but please check before you come along. • Bring a camera so you can take pictures of what you see along the way and binoculars for bird lovers.
Meet the Guides AMANDA BOND Amanda is a Member of the ANFT – a Nature and Forest Therapy Guide and has worked with the National Trust for Jersey on its #LoveNature Festival leading Earth Walks. Forest Bathing is a new venture.
STUART FELL DIP. ARCH, R.I.B.A., I.H.B.C. Stuart studied architecture at Leeds where he developed an interest in historic buildings and townscape. He has held Conservation Officer roles in a number of planning authorities. Stuart became the Conservation Officer/Urban Designer for the States of Jersey in 1995. Retired after working ten years as a private consultant, he now devotes much of his time to local urban history research.
SUE GORIN Sue comes from a farming family and can trace her line back to the 1300’s in the Island. She is passionate about Jersey and together with her love of family history she has combined these two aspects to bring you this tour. She is a member of the CI History Society but has branched out to research the different aspects of Jersey life. She is also a Bronze badge Tourist guide.
TINA HULL BSC (HONS) BOTANY. Tina read Botany at Durham University and has a particular interest in how plants are adapted to their environment and their place in folklore and medicinal uses. Tina works closely with the National Trust for Jersey and is a Bronze Badge Guide.
NICKY MANSELL Nicky is a Jersey Blue Badge guide and retired geography teacher. She has lived in the island for 36 years and is especially interested in uncovering the secrets of our landscapes from the first rock formations through ice ages and prehistoric times to today. Nicky is a keen adventurer, walker and sea kayaker.
ROGER NOEL A Blue Badge Guide, and proud Jersey man who can trace his island roots back to the 14th Century. Roger’s love of history, nature and wildlife will provide you with a wealth of knowledge about Jersey’s famous Ramsar* sites, and our many Sites of Special Interest.
KAZZ PADIDAR Kazz is the Director of Wild Adventures, a company that provides adventure activities in Jersey as well as overseas. A local Outdoor Adventure Instructor, Kazz specialises in teaching survival skills with a specific focus on wild foraging. He is passionate about the outdoors and uses his enthusiasm along with the outdoor medium to inspire others to reconnect with the natural world.
Meet the Guides JON PARKES Jon is the Lands Manager at the National Trust where he has worked for the past 16 years. Jon looks forward to taking walkers around some of the areas and projects that he and his team have managed and maintained over the years.
JOHN PINEL John trained in Botany and has been working as an Ecologist for the past 25 years. He is involved in numerous local Natural History groups and enjoys sharing his passion for our environment with others.
NEIL AND ALLI SINGLETON Neil and Alli run Jersey Birding Tours. Neil is a keen ornithologist and both Neil and Alli are keen nature lovers who love imparting their knowledge and passions with visitors and local residents alike.
BOB TOMPKINS Bob is a former Chairman of the National Trust Lands Advisory Board and member of its Council amongst many other hats that he wears! Bob believes in variety being the spice of life and tries varying his walks and their subject matter according to that belief. Expect the unexpected.
JEAN TRELEVEN Jersey born Blue-Badge Guide with family origins extending back to the Norman period. Jean has a farming background and career in primary and secondary education, especially history and geography. Jean thoroughly enjoys sharing her knowledge and passion for Jersey with both locals and visitors.
