ST LAWRENCE HERITAGE WALK
Discover a little of the history of St Lawrence and the National Trust for Jersey properties in the Parish, including Morel Farm and Le Rât, and the families who lived in the houses in the past. Traditional rural life and nature also feature as we stroll through tree-shaded lanes, remembering the days when water was collected from La Fontaine de St Martin, and any traffic was of the horse variety.
WAVING FIELDS AND WINDMILL WALK
Take a walk in that most Jersey of Parishes - St Ouen. We’ll leave the Parish hall via green lanes and visit the 6000 year old dolmen, then stroll onto the “waving fields” where for hundreds of years wives and girlfriends would wave goodbye to the sailors and fishermen as they went off on hazardous journeys to every part of the known world, with its spectacular views across the calm - or raging - Atlantic ocean. Then back past the windmill and other reminders of a much more tranquil way of life. WILD FOOD FORAGE
Join local botanist Tina Hull for an early evening walk around the Les Quennevais Sports Centre area to see the botanical delights that can grow in the urban environment. Then with just a short walk we will enjoy the views from the top of Les Blanche Banques reminding us that the truly wild is never far away from us.
Come and get lost in the wilds of St. Ouen; take in fantastic scenery, encounter local wildlife and learn about the vast variety of wild edible and medicinal plants our unique environment has to offer. Please dress with an eye on the weather and bring along any food and drink you may need.

MURDER, MUCK AND MAYHEM! EVENING STROLL
By the dim light of dusk, lift the veil on the murkier side of Jersey’s capital as you find yourself in parts of the town that are ‘off the beaten track’. Gruesome events and bizarre characters; oddities and quirks; murder, muck and mayhem – within this twilight world, discover the events that really shaped the Island.
THE NORTH WEST CORNER UNCOVERED
Starting at L’Etacq we will look at the landscape features of the area and consider the deep history which has helped to create the landscapes. The walk will meander along a major geological boundary marking over 200 million years of rock formation and then take the steep path to Les Landes headland past the bunkers and guns from the occupation, across to one of Jerseys Mesolithic sites where many flints have been found. For those who wish, we will walk down to examine the Neolithic, Chalcolithic and Roman remains at the Pinnacle before returning to L’Etacq. Good walking footwear is essential for this walk which will take around 2 - 2 1/2 hours with some steeper sections. LA COTTE A LA CHÈVRE
Starting at Grosnez, the walk heads east to the top of the steep walk down to the raised cave at La Cotte a la Chèvre where many flints and bones from the Palaeolithic era have been found. Stand in the cave and marvel at the shelter afforded by this cave which would have looked out over a vast tundra like plain. This is the most dramatic coastline in Jersey and gives you great views of the cliffs and also the other islands. This walk is restricted to small numbers and participants need to have a good head for heights as it is quite exposed in places. Good walking shoes essential. DISCOVER THE FIEF OF BELLOZANNE
The medieval fief of Bellozanne is synonymous with the vingtaine of Mont-à-labbé. Starting at ‘Bellozanne Abbey’ one of the Trust’s more recent acquisitions, this walk will continue to Fern Valley, one of the Trusts most beautiful woodlands, discovering the stories behind today’s landscape. The terrain will include steps, rough paths and green roads. COASTAL FORAGE
Join Kazz Padidar, Director & Chief Instructor from Wild Adventures on a coastal forage along a stretch of St Ouen’s beach taking in the tide and shore line. Join Neil and Alli of Birding Tours Jersey for a wildlife and mindfulness autumn walk out West. Starting at sea level we will climb the footpath to the natural auditorium, where so many have enjoyed our Sunset Concerts, and visit the ancient Neolithic dolman that is Grantez. Enjoy the spectacular sea views and discover the bountiful wildlife this area holds before descending gently back to sea level. PLÉMONT BEACH GRANITE, CAVES AND VICTORIANS
Explore rock pools and caves in the bay and discover the history of the granite rocks and intrusions and fault lines which cut through the bay. Experience a walk through the Tectonic history of the Island and also a route followed by many Victorian and Edwardian tourists who came to be impressed by the savagery and wildness of the nature to be found there. The beach is always changing and sometimes there are deep pools to get into the caves so wellies, sandals (not flip flops), neoprene shoes or trainers which can get wet are essential. FOREST BATHING WALK
Shinrin-yoku means bathing in the forest, receiving the forest with all your senses. Connecting with nature, ‘Shinrin-yoku as a practice encourages the opening of our senses, it bridges the gap between us and the natural world... As the Island heads towards Autumn come along on this popular walk along the beautiful coastal strip in St Ouen’s Bay through to Le Noir Pre (the orchid fields) and have a look at the wonderful range of plants still flowering and those that are producing beautiful seed structures ready to carry on the cycle of life. This walk starts on the slipway by St Brelades Church. Join your guide, Nicky Mansell who will bring to life the people who lived in the bay during the occupation and the fishermen who left for the cod banks off Canada. Nicky will take participants back to prehistoric times when you could have walked to France and mammoth roamed where the sea is now. The walk is easy but does involve some scrambling over the rocky foreshore to the bottom of the ravine where the Neanderthals once lived for the more adventurous. 19 ENTERING THE MAZE – A LOW WATER ARCHAEOLOGY WALK Join your guide Bob Tompkins on a full blown archaeology walk moving across the reef from east to just west of La Rocque Harbour. Since this walk was undertaken last year for the first time, further analysis suggests that the archaeological finds are thought to date from 4000 BC. The walk will involve a bit of wading across a couple of gullies so please wear footwear and clothing that you don’t mind getting wet. - for Walkers during the ‘Walking Through Autumn’ event • Bring refreshments and some snacks/ packed lunch to eat before/after your walk. • Wear suitable footwear– some of the walks are at low water and you will get wet! Others are on soft sand, uneven ground or cliff paths so make sure that your footwear is suitable for whatever terrain you encounter. • Wear layers or bring a waterproof – so you are dressed whatever the weather. • If not driving, bring a bus timetable so you know what time your next bus is. • Leave nothing but your footprints and take any rubbish home. • Many of the walks are circular but some start at one place and finish at another. Make sure that you can get back! • Most of the guides are happy to have well behaved dogs on leads, but please check before you come along. • Bring a camera so you can take pictures of what you see along the way and binoculars for bird lovers.
Meet the Guides JERSEY BAT GROUP
SUE HARDY
The Jersey Bat Group aim to help protect the island’s bats. It is a registered charity and its statement is:
Twenty years’ experience as a Blue Badge Guide with a wealth of knowledge about the Island and its people, a life-long Jersey resident with family connections to farming and local business. Sue is a founding member of the Jersey Walking Group, an active member of The National Trust for Jersey, the Société Jersiaise, CI Family History Society, and local groups Trees for Life and Action for Wildlife, also the Association of Lighthouse Keepers.
To survey and monitor bat populations, roosts, hibernacula and foraging sites in Jersey and provide information and education regarding bats to the Jersey public. Where possible to take steps to help protect local bat populations, in line with recommendations from the Species Action Plan. Anyone with an interest in bats is welcome to join the group. They hold regular meetings and run a summer survey of the island’s roosts. The group stage member’s walks and public bat walks and opportunities to attend presentations about bats in Jersey and worldwide.
AMANDA BOND Amanda is a Member of the ANFT – a Nature and Forest Therapy Guide and has worked with the National Trust for Jersey on its #LoveNature Festival leading Earth Walks. Forest Bathing is a new venture.
TOM BUNTING Tom has drawn on his 20 years’ experience as a Blue Badge Guide and 30 years as a teacher to inform hundreds of people about the many amazing features of Jersey. This year, he has chosen three all-time favourite walks to share with the lucky visitors to the island, all delivered in his engaging, relaxed and humorous style.
TINA HULL ina Hull BSc (Hons) Botany. Tina read Botany at Durham University and has a particular interest in how plants adapt to their environment and their uses. Tina is also fascinated in the myth, magic and folklore surrounding plants. Tina works closely with The National Trust for Jersey and is a Bronze Badge Guide.
STEPHEN LE QUESNE Stephen Le Quesne is a Forest School and Bush craft Leader with over a decade’s worth of experience in Forest School and outdoor play. Previously he has worked for The National Trust for Jersey, Springfield and Mont Nicolle Primary Schools with his interests revolving around nature connection, well-being and its role within conservation. He is also part of the BBC Springwatch team.
NICKY MANSELL Nicky is a Jersey Blue Badge Guide and retired geography teacher. She has lived in the island for 36 years and is especially interested in uncovering the secrets of our landscapes from the first rock formations through ice ages and prehistoric times to today. Nicky is a keen adventurer, walker and sea kayaker.

BOB TOMPKINS
Kazz is the Director of Wild adventure, a company that provides adventure activities in Jersey as well as overseas. Jersey is a playground for the adventure enthusiast with a great variety of outdoor pursuits to choose from. With towering sea cliffs, stunning coastline, and award winning beaches.
Bob is the Chairman of the National Trust Lands Advisory Board amongst many other hats that he wears! Bob believes in variety being the spice of life and tries varying his walks and their subject matter according to that belief. Expect the unexpected.
JON PARKES
Jersey born with family origins extending back to the Norman period. Jean has a farming background and career in primary and secondary education, especially history and geography. Jean thoroughly enjoys sharing her knowledge and passion for Jersey with both locals and visitors
Jon is the Lands Manager at the National Trust where he has worked for the past 15 years. Jon looks forward to taking walkers around some of the areas and projects that he and his team have managed and maintained over the years, some of which are rarely open to the public.
