SHED Programme August 2021

It is fantastic to be visiting the National Justice Museum this August! We are delighted to be taking over the courtyard space and joining the museum in extending its footprint, creating a place for cultural exploration, artists and creative activities.

Protest S.H.E.D is a brilliant and vital part of our summer programme. We aim for people outside the museum to shape and inform what happens inside the museum, sharing thoughts and perspectives to create something extraordinary together.

Working in partnership with the National Justice Museum we have created a unique space for conversations with people about justice, the law and protest. These conversations are both urgent and necessary; for the future care of our planet and for society.

S.H.E.D is a conversation starter — shedding preconceptions about people and place.

Covid-19 — To keep you and everyone safe, we recommend, where possible that you take a Lateral Flow Test the day before attending a workshop or event at Protest S.H.E.D. Talking with Objects of Protest Alice Owen & Sophie Dolman

Allotments came out of protest and social unrest.

Celebrate the outdoors by planting some seeds and reconnect with your loved ones after lockdown.

Song for Nottingham Tom Hackett & Julian Woodcock

Participants will design a personal protest placard about an issue of their choosing. They will then take part in a short call and response 'Art protest' march from the Justice Museum to Market Square and back led by the artists.

Please note this workshop includes protest banner making and a 20 min walk around Nottingham.

Fashion & Protest Benita Odogwu-Atkinson

Bring an item to upcycle — this upcycling fashion making session is an opportunity to bring people together to talk about fashion as an act of protest. Come along with a wearable garment, and sew in acts of protest to your garment as you swap stories, and transform your wardrobe!

Discover the history of allotments as an act of protest through potting and chatting at S.H.E.D. Learn how allotments have developed from being used to solve social difficulties within the countryside to impacting inner city areas including in Nottingham today.

Reflections on A Seventh Man Pinchbeck & Smith

Explore themes of migration, shelter and belonging in this writing workshop inspired by John Berger and Jean Mohr’s book, A Seventh Man, where special guest Gabrielle Benna will present her own autobiographical writings on displacement, community and home.

Civic Lab is an interdisciplinary research group centred on participatory culture, creative dialogue and experiential design for social impact. This session will question how we can build communities and how can we create the conditions in which those communities can sustainably develop, innovate and thrive within the social, economic, environmental and cultural challenges of the 21st century.
