The Napa Valley Distillery: A Delightful Change of Pace

When you need a palate cleanser after several wine tastings, visiting The Napa Valley Distillery should be your top priority. While the distillery’s main location is temporarily closed for renovation, its three other locations—The Oxbow Tasting Bar, The ArBARetum Cocktail Lounge, and The Club Room—are open for business.

All three bars are located on 1st Street in downtown Napa, making it easy to hop around

on foot. While you’ll have a unique experience at each location, the common thread at each bar is the artisanal distilled spirits made in house. If you’re into sampling spirits, a tasting at the Oxbow Tasting Bar is your best bet. The ArBARetum’s indoor and outdoor bar is a great spot to grab a cocktail and a bite (be sure to try their famous Mufalleta Pizza). The Club Room offers cocktail tastings and is also available for private events of up to 50 people.

Bale Grist Mill — A Dose of History

Most visitors come to St. Helena for the unparalleled culinary offerings, wine tasting and shopping along the quaint Main Street district. Missing from that list of activities is a dose of history and a chance to discover a piece of California heritage that is

still in operation today. Bale Grist Mill State Historic Park, located about ten minutes north of downtown St. Helena, is the site of an original grain mill built in 1846 that was a central part of life for Napa Valley settlers. One of only a few mills of its kind still in operation in

the country, the park offers demonstrations, tours, special events, and educational activities for visitors to learn more about its essential role in early Napa Valley life. Also on site is the first church founded in the area as well as the historic Pioneer Cemetery.

A Hub Abuzz:

Napa Valley’s Downtown in the Late 1800s

During the late 1800s, downtown Napa Valley was full of promise but also peril. This chapter of the region’s history is well worth exploring. As a center for business, culture, and transit, its evolution features important historical events, including a burgeoning winemaking scene and a cultural renaissance.

By the end of the 19th century, the region experienced tremendous growth with more than 140 wineries established—Beringer, Inglenook, Schramsberg, and industry pioneer Charles Krug among them. Small family-run agricultural operations evolved into winemaking productions with the help and influence of European immigrants coming to the region. Yet challenges were

also on the horizon. Events like the phylloxera outbreak and economic instability from the Panic of 1893, both of which stalled investment and hindered growth, were real predicaments that residents faced.

Still, during this time, the area also experienced the development of historic structures like the Napa Valley Opera House along with a range of business openings from general stores to mills. With the area’s hotels, saloons, and shops becoming a daily center of commerce and social life for farmers and merchants, growing infrastructure, such as the completion of the Napa Valley Railroad, helped advance downtown Napa Valley’s expansion even further.

A Work of Art: The Napa Valley Opera House

When it comes to a venue with an impressive history, the Napa Valley Opera House deserves rave reviews. Located on 1030 Main Street, the historic landmark was built in 1879 and designed by 19th-century architects Newsom and Newsom (Samuel and Joseph Cather). The grand Italianate-style structure opened with a performance of Gilbert and Sullivan’s “H.M.S. Pinafore” in 1880, and from then on, the venue became a burgeoning center for arts, culture, and entertainment.

Although the Napa Valley Opera House closed in 1914 due to economic burdens, and lay vacant for several decades, it was restored and reopened in 2003. Since then

this cultural treasure of the city reemerged as a vibrant destination for music and community arts. Serving as an open-floor or seated theater-style space, the venue includes a fully licensed bar, an upgraded sound desk and stage, plus a VIP area for up to 75 guests. Today, performances range from BottleRock Napa Valley AfterDark shows to renowned global jazz artists booked by Blue Note Napa.

Welcome to Napa Valley

Napa Valley is well known for its world-class wineries and breathtaking natural beauty. Framed by towering, verdant mountain ranges and rolling hills covered in lush, green vineyards, this unique and picturesque landscape beckons you to linger and explore all that it has to offer.

Napa’s rich history began when French settlers arrived in the early 18th century and began planting grapes, taking advantage of the mineral-rich soil and temperate year-round climate that are ideal for growing grapes. Over the years, it became one of the most sought-after places to sample and purchase locally made wine. And with so many other things to do and enjoy, it also developed into a first-class destination for visitors.

Fall

This time of year is the harvest season, and the autumn colors are simply gorgeous. Enjoy the crush parties, harvest dinners, and events specific to this special time. It is also the busiest time to visit, so be sure to make reservations in advance.

The many towns, including Napa, Yountville, Calistoga and St. Helena, all have their individual charm, with many different kinds of shops, art galleries, tasting rooms, and restaurants. The vibe is both casual and elegant, with an emphasis on high quality and warm hospitality.

The mild Mediterranean climate of Napa Valley beckons any time of year, but each season has its own weather and unique offerings.

Winter

Enjoy the cozy charm of wining and dining by a crackling fire, the healing power of a world-class spa treatment, and the festive holiday events without the crowds. It is the rainy season, however, so be sure to pack a raincoat.

Spring

A colorful time in Napa Valley, this is when the wildflowers are starting to bloom and the grapes are starting to bud. While there is plenty of sunshine, it is not too hot, so it is a great time to do things both inside and outside.

Summer

Summer is a glorious time to be in Napa Valley. Enjoy dining al fresco, go to one of the many outdoor music festivals, and indulge yourself with the sunshine that the Golden State is known for.

Wine Tasting

With more than three dozen grape varieties grown locally, Napa Valley now boasts more than 400 wineries. Many resemble French chateaus or rustic castles, and they are often nestled among the vineyards, allowing visitors to enjoy breathtaking views of the rolling hills and grapevines.

You can visit these wineries on your own, take the wine trolley, or book a private tour in a town car, limo, or private bus for you and your friends.

If you’re itching for a truly unique experience, take a hot air balloon ride and float high above the dreamy landscape with a birds-eye view. These balloons are usually launched before dawn when the winds are calmest, and seeing the sun rising across the valley is a huge thrill.

Wellness

Levendi’s 2022 Mystique Merlot: Where Heritage Meets Harmony

Levendi is proud to announce the release of the 2022 Mystique Merlot to their already impressive collection of wine varietals. Under the watchful eye of their longtime winemaker, Alison Green Doran, Levendi continues to gain the respect of customers and critics alike with an extraordinary harvest that embodies an exceptional balance of richness and elegance. For over 20 years Green Doran has partnered with the Gianulias family to create wines for generations to toast the celebration of life, the importance of family, and the value of hard work embodied in its namesake.

The Mystique Merlot is a carefully crafted wine that reflects a distinctiveness gained from 11 months of aging in 30% new French oak barrels that enhance the depth and complexity displayed in every sip. Levendi delivers

a stunning combination of cassis and caramel aromas followed by flavors of black cherry and toasted hazelnuts that playfully dance across one’s palate. The smooth texture of its tannins combine with its vibrant acidity to produce a balanced finish which would pair beautifully with a smoked brisket or chicken parmesan. Mystique earned an impressive 94-point rating from the Beverage Testing Institute demonstrating Levendi’s continued commitment to providing wines meant to be enjoyed by both friends and family in the spirit of togetherness and celebration. Mystique can be purchased online at levendiwinery.com, by calling 1-877-538-3634 or by visiting the inviting Levendi Tasting Room located on 1st Street in downtown Napa.

Why Celadon Remains a Must-Visit Restaurant on Napa’s Riverfront

Some restaurants effortlessly capture the essence of Napa dining, and Celadon is one of them. An award-winning staple located in a beautifully preserved Napa Riverfront property, this longtime favorite is known for its globally-inspired menu and relaxed yet refined atmosphere. It’s the kind of place where locals keep coming back, and visitors feel like they’ve uncovered a hidden gem.

The menu draws from Mediterranean, Asian, and Latin American flavors, but everything feels cohesive rather than eclectic. Dishes like Asian sticky ribs, Moroccan braised lamb shank, and vibrant seasonal plates highlight Napa’s bounty, all paired with an expertly curated wine list. Whether you’re settling in for a leisurely dinner or just stopping by for a quick bite, every dish is executed with care.

Celadon’s courtyard is a dream for al fresco dining—twinkling string lights, lush greenery, and just the right amount of buzz. Inside, it’s equally inviting, striking that balance between cozy and upscale. Add in warm hospitality, a strong reputation, and a setting that feels tailor-made for wine country evenings, and it’s easy to see why Celadon remains one of Napa’s most beloved dining destinations.

Beaulieu Vineyard

Beaulieu Vineyard is most widely known for its signature cabernet, the Georges de Latour Private Reserve, which earned the title of Napa Valley’s first “cult” cabernet. While the Georges de Latour may be its most notable claim to fame, there are many more reasons to visit Beaulieu Vineyards this year.

Beaulieu Vineyard’s wines are characterized by a mineral-rich soil called “Rutherford Dust.” The region is characterized by gravelly, well-draining soils and a balanced climate, giving the wines a unique depth and complexity that sets it apart from other Napa Valley cabernets. Visitors can learn more about these one-of-a-kind growing conditions in the vineyard’s “Discover Rutherford Dust” tour, which showcases four exceptional cabernets that exemplify the influence of Rutherford Dust on these wines.

The vineyard is also offering a “Clone Expression” tasting, inviting guests to explore recently discovered clones selected for

their lush berry size and intricate skin textures, according to Claire Wilkins, Beaulieu Vineyard’s director of hospitality.

Later this year, Beaulieu Vineyards will honor its 125th birthday during the 2022 Georges de Latour Release Celebration this September when guests can taste the new vintage. It will also pay tribute to the legendary winemaker, André Tchelistcheff throughout October with additional tastings.

2019 Azur Proprietary Red Blend: A Bordeaux-Inspired Expression of Napa Valley

Azur was launched in 2007 by owner and winemaker, Elan Fayard, with a vision of producing wines representative of the special vineyard sites they derive from. Inspired by studies in Provence and Bordeaux and an immersive background in oenology, hospitality and journalism, Fayard found Napa Valley to be the ideal place to produce the terroir-driven wines she is dedicated to showcasing. Today, she calls a restored farmhouse in the Coombsville appellation home, for herself and her family.

Made from grapes grown on hillside sites in Oakville, the 2019 Azur Proprietary Red Blend is a full, velvety Bordeaux-style wine. As one of Azur’s signature wines, this bottle opens up with

aromas of blackberry, cassis and violets, followed by undertones of crushed herbs, rose petals and a hint of black pepper on the nose. At once elegant yet powerful, it unfolds gradually on the palate, with flavors of dark chocolate and black cherry. Integrated tannins and a long mouthfeel create a lingering experience while drinking this rich Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot blend.

This wine in particular is reflective of Fayard’s desire to pull from her French-inspired winemaking philosophies to create wines truly expressive of the stunning Napa Valley vineyards they begin in.

The 28-acre property, nestled between the Napa River and the Mayacamas Mountains, is an idyllic escape just 12 minutes from downtown Napa.

Instead of traditional guestrooms, Carneros offers standalone cottages, residences, and luxury homes spread throughout 17 neighborhoods with cute names like Poppy and Persimmon. Flowers and fruit trees frame pathways around the property. Rocking chairs decorate front porches and indoor/outdoor living designs mean tons of natural light and lots of time in nature.

Designed for extra space and privacy, the 1700-square-foot

residences at Carneros offer all the comforts of home, including a full kitchen and dining room, one king bedroom, plus a second king bedroom with a queen Murphy bed. The 1,000-square-foot backyard includes a fireplace, hot tub, and gas barbecue.

Carneros’ two- and three-bedroom luxury homes are located inside a gated neighborhood and provide a 2,400-square-foot interior space and 1,400-square-foot outdoor space. Highlights include kitchens with Viking appliances, living rooms that open to private courtyards, and rooftop sundecks to

enjoy warm afternoons and starlit nights with a glass of vino. Beyond the accommodations, Carneros’ amenities and on-site activities are excellent. The tranquil adults-only Hilltop Pool is surrounded by a grass lawn and flanked by umbrella-topped chaise lounges. Here, you can soak up unobstructed stretches of Napa’s mountains and vineyards while poolside attendants help with food or beverage needs. The property also has a separate kid-friendly pool (Otto’s Pool). For extra self-care, visit the resort’s spa for a massage, facial, body scrub, and more.

Carneros’ three on-site restaurants embrace a farm-to-table philosophy with organic, seasonal ingredients sourced from its culinary gardens, on-site chicken coop, and nearby farms.

FARM

Elegant dining with seasonally inspired menus is expertly paired with local wines and craft beer. Just steps from the dining room, find the POST Wine Tasting Room. A former functioning post office turned tasting room features a rotating list of Napa Valley and Sonoma Valley wines.

A local favorite known for its brunch and casual all-day menu, this café set inside a rustic red barn serves everything from donuts and bagels to omelets and burgers.

Work up a sweat in the fitness center or opt for daily wellness classes ranging from Gentle Yoga to Tone & Sculpt. You can also stargaze with rented telescopes or watch a movie outside in your private backyard while roasting s’mores by the firepit. Jessel Gallery: Four Decades of Art, Creativity, and Community in Napa Valley

Back in the fall of 1984, Jessel Miller opened a small, 300-square-foot gallery showcasing the work of four artists in the former Hedgeside Whiskey Distillery on Atlas Peak Road in Napa. At that time, the surrounding fields were vast and vacant, and the area was a very different place. Today, Miller’s namesake gallery is alive and well, celebrating 40 years in business with numerous accolades as Napa’s best art gallery. With a robust calendar of programming, classes, and events, the gallery is a hub of creativity. Along with regular receptions to introduce new artists, each month offers

classes, with themes like watercolor birds or potluck acrylics classes. Miller, the founder of the Napa Valley Mustard Celebration, also hosts local writers’ salons, group shows, and open studios. Additionally, a wide variety of art, books, gifts, jewelry, and clothing are for sale onsite.

While the space has grown to 7000-square-feet, featuring dozens of artists working in a myriad of mediums, Jessel Gallery stays true to a mission of supporting the arts, and the people who create it, through thick and thin. It is the largest and oldest art gallery in the entire Napa Valley.

Blue Note Napa Brings

Intimate Jazz and Big Summer Concerts to Wine Country

Blue Note Napa is where live music meets Wine Country cool. Housed inside the historic Napa Valley Opera House, this intimate jazz club delivers world-class performances in a setting that feels effortlessly vibrant and welcoming. The experience is reminiscent of a classic Greenwich Village jazz club—small tables, a close-up stage, and an atmosphere so personal it feels like the band is playing just for you.

The menu keeps things casual and crowdfriendly, with shareable flatbreads, hearty burgers, and comforting gnocchi—perfect fuel for a night of live music. A Napa Valley wine is always

a solid choice, but the cocktail list brings its own rhythm with drinks like the Jazz Man, a refreshing mix of gin, cucumber, honey, lime, and mint. When summer rolls around, Blue Note Napa takes things outdoors with Summer Sessions at The Meritage Resort. This year’s lineup brings a mix of legendary and contemporary artists, featuring Grace Jones, the Gipsy Kings, and Snarky Puppy. With a vineyard backdrop and warm Napa nights, it’s a music experience unlike any other. From intimate jazz sets downtown to open-air concerts under the stars, Blue Note Napa creates unforgettable nights in Wine Country.

Visit The Petrified Forest

The Petrified Forest in Sonoma County is a natural wonder that’s quite literally trapped in time. When Mount St. Helena erupted 3.4 million years ago, it buried a forest of redwood trees under a layer of volcanic ash, causing the trees to petrify—or turn into stone—through a geological process that took thousands of years.

Visitors can wander the forested trails to discover the petrified trees on a self-guided tour that takes about an hour to complete.

The Petrified Forest is easily located in the city of Calistoga, and is the perfect starting point for any Napa Valley adventures.

Exploring Skyline Wilderness Park

The Skyline Wilderness Park sits at the foothills of the Napa Valley and encompasses 850 acres of stunning nature and wildlife. The park includes 25 miles of trails for hiking, biking, and horseback riding—and there’s also a lake at the end of a 2.5 mile trail.

The trail difficulty ranges from easy to advanced, but the more difficult routes pay off with expansive views of the San Francisco Bay, Mt. Tamalpais, and Mt. Diablo.

While you’ll have to leave your dog at home, the park is equipped with grills, an RV park, and plenty of space for camping.

The Natural Beauty of Linda Falls

The aptly named Linda Falls Preserve is a 177-acre piece of land in the hills of Angwin within the scenic Las Posadas State Forest. Originally part of the La Jota Land Grant, this acreage was donated to the Land Trust of Napa County just about twenty years ago, and has been protected as a preserve ever since. “Linda”

means “beautiful” in Spanish, and there’s no better way to appreciate the beauty of this land than by taking a short hike out to the namesake of this preserve, Linda Falls. This 50-foot waterfall is composed of volcanic rock, covered in blankets of moss and the chilly Conn Creek watershed.
