an introduction to...
The National Association for Bikers with a Disability The NABD was set up in April 1991 by a group of people in Manchester who believe that disabled people should have full access to the independence and freedom of motorcycling. During the past twenty - odd years, this unique Association has developed immensely. The membership of the NABD has increased to over 7,500 individuals from all over Britain, Eire and Europe with well over 150 clubs, groups and businesses affiliating to show their support of our aims. The NABD has many diverse aspects including: FINANCIAL GRANTS To assist with the cost of special adaption work to bikes and trikes to suit the individual requirements of disabled riders. These grants range from £500.00 to £2,000.00 dependant on the type of machine and the specific needs of the disabled rider. NABD grants are also now available toward the costs of refresher training and assessments. ASSESSMENTS AND TRAINING The NABD has a number of “learner legal” 125cc machines, which are adapted to suit various disabilities. These machines are lent to disabled riders free of charge for the purposes of professional training/tests and rider assessments. The NABD also offer financial help with the cost of refresher training for riders who have become disabled due to traumatic accidents or who have endured a protracted period of time off the road. INSURANCE The NABD has negotiated discount rates for members from some of the more reputable companies. Where an individual has difficulty obtaining a reasonable quotation we will attempt to negotiate a satisfactory conclusion. Bikesure Insurance (part of the Adrian Flux Group) in cooperation with the NABD operate a unique discounted insurance scheme for our members. It is our belief that; “When it comes to motorcycling, a disability should not be a handicap”. NABD Website: www.nabd.org.uk
REPRESENTATIVES The NABD has a wide network of appointed representatives throughout Britain who co-ordinate the efforts of local members and organise regular meetings and fund-raising events. AWARENESS The NABD is constantly trying to educate the organisers of motorcycle events to the fundamental needs of disabled riders. Many organisers now ask our advice on facilities for people with disabilities as a matter of course. NABD information and publicity stands attend a large number of motorcycling and disability events each year throughout the British Isles. The NABD’s quarterly magazine, Open House, which gives a broad view of the work of the association, is available to every NABD member and affiliate and to other supporters and interested parties. ADAPTIONS The adaptions made to motorcycles and trikes are as varied as current technology will allow. Adaptions range from simple re-siting of existing controls, to the fitting of specially designed kits or even the building of specialised vehicles where necessary to suit the particular needs of a disabled rider. Due to the detailed engineering work involved, the NABD utilises a network of professional engineers throughout Britain and Eire. EVENTS The NABD holds many events around Britain throughout the year. These NABD events range from major annual motorcycle rallies to smaller fund-raising activities. Although these events are intended primarily to raise funds, they have gained a reputation for being good value, quality entertainment. Several of the more regular events are now classed as some of the best on the motorcycle scene. FINANCE The administration of the NABD is financed entirely from the proceeds of membership fees and our own direct fund-raising efforts.
All donations made to the NABD are used solely to fund the adaption grants and other services offered to disabled riders by the Association. The NABD is a voluntary association. We only have two paid employees, a full-time office administrator and a full-time admin assistant. The gross turnover of the NABD for 2018-1019 was over £245.000.00. OTHER FUNDING The NABD are constantly seeking funding from sources like the National Lottery and the European Union. We are also seeking sponsorship from commercial interests and the motorcycle industry in particular. MEMBERSHIP NABD membership is available to anyone with a love of motorcycling irrespective of disability. Each member receives a members pack, the Open House magazine and discount prices on some items of NABD merchandise. Also, and perhaps more importantly, members get the chance to help lots of people enhance their lives in a practical and constructive way. CAMPAIGNING The NABD has several objectives concerning the rights and safety of disabled riders, we are regularly consulted on issues relating to disabled motorcycling by the DVLA, DfT, VOSA, DSA, and the Highways Agency. We also work closely with MAG and BMF on many issues affecting the rights of bikers. THE FUTURE Over the years the NABD has helped thousands of people with disabilities to enjoy the independence and the freedom of motorcycling. With the continued support of the biking community the NABD will remain the world’s foremost support group for disabled bikers!

Why is the NABD struggling/suspended grants? Well, quite simply, the NABD relies on donations. Every penny we get in donations goes out as grants to people, and if we get no donations, we cannot give it out. The vast majority of donations come from events and rallies that clubs and individuals put on. Obviously this has stopped completely, so the donations are not coming in. The bills of the Association are paid for by the money raised at our own events, which have been cancelled this year (the National cancellation actually cost the NABD money it had already paid out). Meanwhile the bills still need to be paid. Well, where do I start? What a strange year so far. All the hopes and plans of just about everybody have been put on hold for at least 12 months, and people are stuck indoors waiting to see what happens. At the time of writing we may be allowed out soon, or not. We may be allowed to go to the pub, or not, and we may be allowed to travel, or not. Basically, no�one knows what is going on and your guess is as good as mine. One thing is for certain. This Coronavirus has taken away some much missed people from us. Families have been devastated and the biking scene will never be the same again. These interesting times have meant that we have not been able to say goodbye to those we have loved and lost. I have a feeling that the first event I attend, there will be many a glass raised in honour of them. Speaking of events, what events? Yep, everything has been cancelled or put off until next year. Our own NABD National and NABDonia events included. We still hold out hope of maybe a few events towards the end of the year, but I personally believe it may be wishful thinking at the moment.
At least I have been able to get out on the bike (I have no problem with social distancing, I’ve been practicing it for years) but the one thing I have missed is sitting in a field around a fire having a drink and putting the world to rights with friends old and new. We in the NABD have always held our doctors and nurses in the NHS in high esteem, and it is nice to see that everyone else has the same opinion. We collectively give our thanks to everyone who has continued to work and help us through this trying time. Many of us have disabilities and health issues, so the help and support many of us have received has helped us soldier on. But it is fair to say that the NABD, along with a lot of charities, is struggling at the moment. You will see elsewhere in this issue a statement from our Chairman about the AGM being postponed and the suspension of our grant system. This is heartbreaking for us all. However, we have a duty on us to make sure the NABD continues and comes through this. We continue to investigate all means available to help the Association. Which leads me to a question I have been asked a few times...
It may be that there will be no events until 2021. In that case the NABD may be looking at Summer next year before the donations begin coming in again. So the Trustees of the charity have an obligation to ensure that the NABD survive the next 12 months and come through this period. Behind the scenes we have been working hard to try use every available measure we can to cut down on our outgoings, but the NABD is already run on a shoestring, so options are limited. We are also looking into other means of raising funds. Our on�line presence has been invaluable in trying to both entertain people and bring in donations. Our Virtual YBN rally was well received, and hopefully our virtual NABDonia on Facebook will be the same. You can be assured that we do not take these decisions lightly, and we are constantly reviewing the situation on a month by month basis. I doubt the situation will have changed by the next issue of Open House, but I live in hope. Have Fun Vic 5

First of all, I must say a huge thank you to NABD for my grant which has helped me to get my trike sorted and enabled me to continue riding. I have been riding bikes now for 40 odd years, then about four years ago after suffering for many years with aches and pains in my arms and back, all hell broke loose. I was diagnosed with two slipped vertebra and three damaged discs which causes agonising pain, leaving me hardly able to walk, let alone ride a bike. I also have arthritis in my arms, hands and knees which contributes to the pain. I had a GSX1400 which I was pushing out of the garage to go for a spin and bang, the back went, putting me off work for a week. So I changed the bike for something smaller, getting a GSX650F, that was ok until out one day for a spin I lost my balance and dropped it, luckily I was near my brother’s house and he was able to help me, I thought that was the end of my biking days. That was until someone mentioned a trike, so looking online I found Casarva who are in Peterborough, and after reading several reviews decided to visit 6

while on holiday in the area. After speaking to Steve who told me about the NABD I decided to go ahead and book in my 1500 Suzuki Intruder which I bought as a donor bike. Steve was extremely helpful throughout, talking me through the process and listening to my needs, offering opinions and advice, nothing was too much trouble. I can see why Casarva are Gold Business affiliated members of the NABD. I became a member of NABD and applied for a grant to help with the cost, which was approved and I was delighted to receive. So I sat back and let the Casarva team do their work, all the while being kept up to date with emails and photos of work in progress. The day came to collect my trike and to say I was delighted is an understatement, it is superb, exactly how I wanted it to be, It Is like sitting in an armchair, perfect for myself and my wife and we look forward to many happy miles on it. I cannot emphasize enough how much it means to be able to carry on biking and would like to say with a massive thank
you to Steve and team for their brilliant job and would highly recommend a visit to Casarva for anyone contemplating a trike. Lastly may I take this opportunity to voice my agreement with Gary Seddon, that membership is annually and not just for a grant. In August last year my wife, two brothers‐in‐law and I were heading for yet another biking holiday to Ypres in Belgium on four motorcycles when a ‘Sorry mate I didn’t see you’ Land Rover took me off my holiday. A serious RTC only ten miles from home in Kington Herefordshire. The police and ambulance were on the job and the air ambulance was called. The Midlands Air Ambulance responded, followed by a fifteen minute flight to the Queen Elizabeth Hospital in Birmingham. The emergency services all were great. I was lucky to have them. The medical care at the Q.E. Hospital was excellent and the staff was caring and friendly. I knew I was in good hands sharing the superb care the injured members of the armed services receive. Unfortunately the lower part of my right leg couldn’t be saved and a below knee amputation was necessary.
After 34 days I got home, with a long road ahead to recovery. I never quite appreciated what the term ‘life changing injuries’ really meant, but now I do. My wife and I joined the NABD with the idea to get me back to biking as soon as possible. Reading about others’ journeys back to riding in the Open House magazine and attending the You’ve Been Nabbed Rally in May; I was fully charged. Back to biking. I got in touch with Hank at Trike Design in Caerphilly and he sourced a Harley Davidson Softail Classic and the team got to work to create a beautiful Trike for me. With the help of a grant from the NABD the rear brake was moved from the foot brake to the right hand leaver. The front brake was also moved to a thumb brake behind the clutch. A cradle was made on the right foot plate to help keep my prosthetic leg in place.
Job done. 14 months after my accident I am back riding a motorcycle. How good is that? Thank you to Trike Design and the NABD. Risto Kantolinna

Like many other registered charities, the National Association for Bikers with a Disability (NABD) has taken a financial pummelling since the Coronavirus pandemic struck the UK. Our largest annual fundraising event, The You’ve Been Nabbed Rally had to be cancelled in May, causing a loss in the region of £35,000 to our annual revenue. Despite lots of claims by government sources that there would be help for charities during this crisis; the NABD has not been able to gain a single penny in governmental support. In addition to regular NABD fundraising events for 2020 having to be cancelled, many other events that traditionally support the NABD with sizeable donations have also been cancelled. When you also 8

consider that the vast majority of people in the UK now find themselves less‐able to support their chosen charities, you begin to see the dire situation the NABD is facing as this year progresses.

The profits from the annual You’ve Been Nabbed Rally usually cover a significant portion of the cost of employing our two paid employees, the Office Manager and the Administrative Assistant. Fortunately we were able to furlough our admin assistant, which has helped reduce the strain on NABD funds to some extent, but the almost total lack of income over recent months, and the prospect of worse to come, left the NABD Trustees no alternative but to suspend the NABD Adaptation Grants Scheme from June
Not being the sort of people to sit back twiddling our thumbs and hoping for ‘Manna from Heaven’, we decided to run an on‐line virtual event via the NABD Facebook page on the weekend that should have been The 29th You’ve Been Nabbed rally. Being a fairly impromptu project put together at fairly short notice the event did not raise as much money as we might have hoped but it did give us a chance to experience the problems relating to producing and managing an online event.
comedy ‘Happy Hour’ (which actually lasted two hours) hosted by myself and my lovely wife Mandy (who got very drunk very quickly testing the cocktails I made during the early part of the show) and featuring live comedy sets from very fine stand‐up comedians, Richard Massara, Jonathan Mayor and Martin Mor; with a guest ‘open‐spot’ from up‐and‐coming comedian Bob Ingham. Despite a few hitches along the way, everything went pretty well with the performances and we had a gratifyingly large audience watching online and joining in the banter via Facebook Messenger. Everybody involved had donated their time and talent free‐of‐charge and NABD webmaster Simon Freedman did a magnificent technical job in the background keeping it all from falling apart. Unfortunately we hit an unexpected snag with attaching donation buttons to the live performances on the host page, which meant donations fell far below what we had hoped for, but we managed to sell a couple of hundred limited‐edition event patches which brought the total up to a much‐needed £1,000 over the weekend. Fortunately the Sunday of this event also coincided with my lovely wife Mandy’s birthday and she had set‐up a Facebook birthday fundraiser in aid of the NABD which went on to raise a staggering £3,044 toward the NABD survival fund! With many lessons learned we immediately started thinking about following the event up with another virtual rally to coincide with the cancelled dates of our annual ‘Nabdonia’ rally on the first weekend in July.
We had terrific live music performances on the evening of Friday May 8th from NABD Patron and top‐class troubadour Stevie Simpson, Steph Hoy live from Paris, Billy Mac, Denis Dowling and a headline solo set from Chris Harwood of Exhibit A. On Saturday May 9th we posted a series of videos from previous NABD events throughout the day including excellent performances by Exhibit A, 5th Element, T‐Bone Jones, The Rattlers, Lil’ Devil, Re‐ Generate, Magnum and The Jalapenos with lots of banter online to keep the party going. We also had a very special guest comedy video supplied by the magnificent Milo McCabe in his inimitable Troy Hawk character. On Sunday May 10th we had a live stand‐up
This time we set up a specific ‘Event Page’ on Facebook and made sure in advance that we could attach donate buttons to each individual performance. One of the great advantages to using the Facebook donation system is that every single penny donated goes to the charity nominated. Facebook take nothing out for ‘administration fees’ (unlike ‘Just Giving’ and other so‐called ‘charity fundraising sites’ online who take a hefty slice from both donors and the charity concerned for using their site as a collection point). This time we made sure there was plenty of prior publicity and lots of chatter generated about the event online, so that when it began on Friday July 3rd we had a very respectable number of people watching. Mandy and I hosted the show naked throughout Friday evening due to us
having had to make soup out of our clothes, and a rather fine cheesecake out of our boots, in response to the privations of the Covid‐19 pandemic. We enjoy magnificent live music performances from Stevie Simpson, Jeff Lockett, Billy Mac, Blues Legend ‐ Adrian Byron Burns, and a rather brilliant trio called Finch. Despite one or two technical issues, the night was an absolute joy and the banter online was worth bottling. We even had couples posting tasteful pictures of themselves watching the show naked in response to the example set by Mandy and myself! On the Saturday afternoon we had a Smacked Arse Comedy Show hosted by myself and Mandy (now fully dressed once again) featuring brilliant comedy sets from Freddy Quinne, Rob Mulholland, Lindsey Davies and Steve Harris. The laughter came thick and fast for more than two‐hours of top‐class comedy. Throughout the day we also had a silly online game running, courtesy of NABD Trustee Vic Hawkes who was also overseeing the online auction of a 3‐day mini‐break for six people at a lovely farm in the Staffordshire Peak District. In the evening we returned to the live music with brilliant performances with Stevie Simpson, Sam Ferris, Steph Hoy, Denis Dowling and Chris Harwood (who went on to do a spectacular 2‐hour encore). Once again we had a special ‘limited‐ edition’ event patch for sale but this time we had a much larger audience tuning in from at least five countries. The upshot of the Virtual Nabdonia Rally 2020 was, more than £5,000 raised toward the NABD survival fund. Needless to say, we are already planning a Virtual Autumn Nabd’ness rally for September 11th & 12th 2020. Keep an eye on www.nabd.org.uk and www.facebook.com/groups/TheNABD/ for further information. I have no doubt at all that the Coronavirus pandemic is going to be blighting all of our lives for some time to come and I will not try to hide the fact that the NABD is increasingly facing a struggle for its very existence. The only thing I can guarantee is that we will not stop fighting to keep the NABD afloat while we have the stalwart support of stout‐hearted bikers! Rick Hulse 9

The Covid‐19 Coronavirus pandemic continues to adversely affect the work of the NABD. Despite the current easing of the lockdown there seems little prospect of any substantial improvement to our situation over the next six months or possibly longer. NABD Grants System Suspended: With the cancellation of the 29th You’ve Been Nabbed rally and the general reduction in the amount of donations received by the NABD as the Coronavirus pandemic has progressed have resulted in a significant reduction in the NABD funds. As this situation shows every likelihood of continuing throughout the rest of 2020 and possibly on into 2021, the NABD Trustees have had no alternative but to suspend the grants system until further notice and to concentrate all of our efforts on ensuring that this Registered Charity survives the current crisis. This decision will be under constant review and the grants system will be reinstated the moment it is deemed financially safe to do so. At the online National Committee meeting on Friday 29th May 2020 the last of the money in the sadly depleted Grant Fund was used to award grants for four more people with disabilities to have their motorcycles or trikes adapted to suit their needs. We apologise to those who are currently awaiting grants to have machines adapted and to those who may be planning to apply for a grant in the near future. Grant applicants can rest‐assured that, once the grants scheme is reinstated, all
applications will be dealt with in the order that they were received.

NABD AGM 2020 Postponed: The Trustees of the NABD have postponed this year’s Annual General Meeting (AGM), which was due to take place on 27th June 2020. With such a high proportion of the NABD’s membership and elected officials being in the highest risk Coronavirus categories, holding an AGM at this time, even with social‐ distancing measures in place, would been directly in breach of our duty of care to members and elected officials. This decision will be under constant revue at the online National Committee meetings and a new date for the AGM will be announced when it is deemed safe for members and elected officials to attend. NABD Nabdonia Rally (Going Virtual) 3rd & 4th July: The current situation has left us with no alternative but to cancel the Nabdonia rally, due to be held at Swallow Falls, Betws‐y‐Coed, 3rd ‐ 5th July 2020. However, due to the relative success of an impromptu ‘Virtual’ event put together at short notice over the weekend of the 29th You’ve Been Nabbed rally, we have decided to run a virtual Nabdonia rally on Facebook over the weekend of 3rd & 4th July 2020, with live broadcasts from a range of musicians on the evening of Friday 3rd July, hosted by NABD patron Stevie Simpson; then a live ‘Smacked Arse Comedy Show’ on the afternoon of Saturday 4th July and more live music broadcasts & banter throughout the
Each broadcast will also be accompanied by a ‘Donation Button’ for those who wish to donate towards the NABD survival fund. All of the entertainers involved will be giving their time and talent free‐of‐charge in support of the NABD, as will our Webmaster, Simon Freedman, who has the unenviable task of making sure it all works. There will be a special ‘one‐off’ patch available to commemorate this Virtual Nabdonia and to raise much‐needed funds to ensure the survival of the NABD. Further details will be published on the NABD website; www.nabd.org.uk and the official NABD Facebook Group; www.facebook.com/groups/TheNABD/ NABD Office Staff: The issues of social‐distancing, shielding and the loss of this year’s You’ve Been Nabbed rally led us to the decision to furlough one of our two paid employees in April. While on furlough our Office Admin Assistant can do no work for the NABD, which means our Office Manager is having to cover all of the administrative duties. It was in September 2016 Rick Hulse posted pictures of riders and their machines on the NABD Facebook page and seeing them I thought to myself “yeah, I want that” and that was the spark I needed to get my arse into gear and get back on a bike. I was riding a Piaggio X9 500 at the time, a great scooter, quick, handles well, easily cruised at 70mph with a pillion, but I hated it, I had it for two years and only did two hundred miles. It kind of reminded me that I was an amputee and couldn’t ride a proper bike and I wanted back on a bike so much. I hadn’t really got any idea so after seeing those pictures I posted the question on the Facebook page and got a reply from Gary Seddon asking me to give him a ring and I’m so glad I did. Gary took the time to explain to me what was involved and 12

what the NABD was about and how they could help. If I became a member I could apply for a grant to help with the adaptations I would need to get me back on a bike, I needed the Klicktronic gear change and the K‐lever brake system. So, I joined the NABD and off I went on the hunt for a new bike, and I found it. A Triumph Speedmaster took my fancy and I wanted it so I bought it. I applied to the NABD for a grant and in the November I was awarded it. The dealer I bought the bike from were happy to take on the work needed and finally just before Christmas it was finished and delivered to me and now, I’m back on the road. None of this would have been possible without the help given from the NABD, Rick Hulse for posting the pictures, the time Gary Seddon took to talk to me, the committee, the members who offered
advice and the ladies on the end of the phone who helped with the form and application and any other queries I had. Thank you. Steve

As members of a Sheffield biker club (Road Jokers), my husband and I had plans to attend several rallies this year. Due to the current situation, a lot have been cancelled and we knew this would impact the NABD. So, when it was our turn to nominate a benefactor for our most recent fundraising street event, we nominated the NABD. On a usual bank holiday Sunday, a few of us would typically head to the Pub but were obviously unable to do that on May 24th. So, I proposed a Pub‐theme for that afternoon’s activities, suggesting we decorate our homes, gardens and drives like public houses and think of Pub names that would also be team names for the pub quiz.

Both the Motorcycle Action Group and the British Motorcycle Federation sit on this coalition, and have released statements, so here’s the BMF one…. Common sense really. The Coalition of Motorcycling Organisations has issued a revised version of its COVID‐19 Riding Guidelines. This third iteration of the guidance based on the latest changes to government guidelines includes advice on group riding and first responder incident management. The coalition are delighted that the guidance has now received an official seal of approval from Nick Adderley, the National Police Chiefs’ Council (NPCC) lead for motorcycling. The coalition has worked hard to distil government coronavirus guidelines into a single guide relevant to motorcyclists. The guidelines have been updated to encompass recent changes in the constantly evolving advice designed to keep individuals and the wider community safe in
these challenging times. The new guidelines remind riders to plan carefully and to check government websites including for Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland and any local lockdowns. They remind everyone not to ride if they are suffering symptoms of COVID‐19 or have been in contact in the last 14 days with someone who has had symptoms or tested positive. Other points of emphasis include: checking out COVID‐19 security arrangements at indoor venues (but ideally not to meet indoors); keeping riding groups to no more than six; and observing distancing, hand hygiene and mask requirements at all times. Commenting on the guidelines and the work of the Coalition members, Nick Adderley said: “I have been asked to review this guidance on behalf of the Coalition of Motorcycle Organisations in my capacity as NPCC lead for police motorcycling and motorcycle‐related crime. Policing the pandemic has been challenging and often confusing time for all including
motorcyclists. We are keen to ensure that the public can enjoy social activities and meet up within the parameters of the guidance set by the government. “I am reassured by the work that has gone into the production of these motorcycle‐ specific guidelines. I would particularly like to commend the lead authors, Roger Bibbings of the VMCC and Richard Gladman of IAM RoadSmart, for their tireless work on this project. I would encourage all riders, whether they are riding alone or in groups, to consult the guidance and to follow the rules at rest stops and while visiting public places. A ROUGH GUIDE TO ADAP This is the latest up-date of our “Rough Guide to Adaptions”. Due to the limitations of the available space in the the Open House magazine we can not go into minute detail of each and every option, but hopefully this article will give a fairly good overview of the most commonly available options for the adaption of most motorcycles and trikes to suit the needs of riders with disabilities. Where possible we have included the web-site addresses or other contact details of manufacturers. More comprehensive details are available on www.nabd.org.uk or from the NABD office: office@thenabd.co.uk Right Leg: (Amputation, reduced/restricted strength/mobility in the knee or the ankle joints): This is usually a simple matter of transferring the rear brake pedal to a handlebar-mounted lever. This can take the form of a thumb operated lever or “twin” levers. Another method of adapting the rear brake system is to utilise a mechanical linkage or hydraulic extension to transfer the brake pedal to the left-hand side of the machine. This can be sited either beside the gear pedal or directly behind it for heel operation. 1. Twin levers 2. Thumb brake 3. Crossover to the left side of the motorcycle. For any type of leg disability you may find it difficult to operate the side stand. This can usually be cured with the simple addition of a hand operated actuating lever or moving the stand to the right side of the machine.
Left Leg: (Amputation, reduced / restricted strength / mobility in the knee or the ankle joints): The easiest method would be to use an electrongic gear change system such as the Kliktronic push button gear-changer www.kliktronic.co.uk. This unit works by pushing two buttons on the handlebars that operate an electronic actuator connected to the gear pedal. The Kliktronic gear-changer is supplied as a complete, easy to fit kit, which can be used on all styles of motorcycle. Another method is to use a cross over linkage to the right side of the motorcycle, mounting the gear pedal either beside or in-front of the rear brake pedal. 1. Electronic push button gear-changer (to fit 1” and 7/8” bars) (“on-bar” or “under-bar” push-buttons) 2. “Crossover” to the right side of the motorcycle

The front brake caliper can then be operated by a “twin lever” in tandem with the clutch lever (see www.klever2.com and/or www.pfmbrakes.com for twin lever kits) or by fitting a thumb operated lever below the left handlebar. Some switchgear may require adapting to suit left hand operation. (www.bitzforbikes.co.uk) If the disability of the rider just involves difficulty with operating a twist grip throttle (i.e. fused or stiff wrist, tendonitis etc) the only requirement may be the use of a thumb-operated throttle (as used on quads). Where it is a matter of reduced mobility or amputation of fingers or wrist problems it may be that a thumb operated brake lever will solve the problem. A further, though less common option would be to operate the front brake with a left foot pedal mounted behind the gear pedal for heel operation. 1. Left-hand throttle 2. Right-hand thumb throttle 3. In most cases this is a simple matter of adapting the clutch operating lever and some minor modification to the switchgear on the left handlebar. There are several ways to adapt the clutch lever depending on the severity of the individual’s disability. In the
PTATIONS BY RICK HULSE case of total loss of/or loss of use of the left hand, the clutch lever must be re-sited elsewhere. Most commonly this is a simple matter of transferring the lever to the right handle bar using “twin levers” for front brake and clutch (see www.klever2.com and/or www.pfmbrakes.com for twin lever kits) or by fitting a thumb operated lever below the right handlebar to operate the front brake and using the original front brake lever for the clutch. In the case of reduced mobility or strength in the left hand, further options would be; An hydraulic to cable conversion kit for smaller bikes makes the use of cable operated clutches much lighter. For a limited range of motorcycles, an automatic clutch such as the Rekluse Z-Clutch www.rekluse.co.uk may be available. Recently some of the major motorcycle manufacturers have produced large capacity motorcycles that are available with automatic
transmission, thereby doing away with the clutch altogether. The Yamaha FJR1300AS has an automatic transmission as does the Honda DN01, the Honda CTX700 and the Honda VFR1200DCT. 1. Right hand twin levers 2. Automatic Clutch 3. Thumbrake & Clutch Right or Left Arm: With all adaptions to suit riders with a hand or arm disability we strongly recommend the fitting of a high quality steering damper. When necessary a Velcro glove to handlebar grip can be used to help keep the affected hand on the handlebar & in some cases for amputees, prosthetics can be specially adapted to enable some handlebar use.
There are “drop down” stabiliser kits www.adaptivemotorcycles.com and www.koeltgen.de/kontakt.h tml for solo motorcycles on the market but as yet we have not been able to fully test their viability for disabled riders.
However we must stress the importance of never being too firmly connected to a solo motorcycle. If you do have a spill while riding you need to be able to separate from the machine very easily rather than be dragged along by it into what could prove to be a more dangerous situation.

Wheelchair Users & Balance problems: (Bilateral amputation, paraplegia, MS, reduced mobility/strength in legs, balance problems, etc): With these types of disability one obvious issue is that of stability, which usually means the addition of a “third road wheel” whether this is in the form of a bike and sidecar combo or a trike. In the case of bike and sidecar combos sometimes it is possible to utilise standard outfits when the bike has been converted to “full hand controls”. But there are also some manufacturers who manufacture specialised or adapted sidecar outfits that are specifically designed to suit independent use by wheelchair users such as Motopodd Ltd www.motopodd.com and Unit Sidecars Ltd www.unitsidecars.co.uk In the case of trikes it is always preferable to have a trike fully manufactured specifically to suit

The vast majority of motorcycles do not feature a reversing facility. However, for many people with disabilities, a reversing facility is essential when a motorcycle has been converted to a trike. There are several methods of achieving this; perhaps the oldest method was to incorporate an electric reversing motor, but this has generally proven to be ineffecient and ofter a serious strain on the battery. More recently, purpose built reversing differentials and in-line reversing gearboxes have emerged onto th emarket from the motor racing scene. Companies like Quaife Engineering Ltd www.quaife.co.uk and Elite Racing Transmissions Ltd www.eliteracing transmissions.com produce in-line reversing boxes for shaft-driven vehicles and reversing differentials for chain, belt or shaft driven vehicles. NB. This guide is not intended as an exhaustive catalogue of the adaptions available for bikes and trikes. It is meant as a brief guide featuring the most popular solutions to the most common problems faced by many riders with disabilities when considering adapting machines. There are always other options available and we at the NABD are constantly working with some highly skilled engineers to develop new alternatives and improvements to existing kits. 19
