ur 2018/2019 season of Glorya Kaufman Presents Dance at The Music Center — a program of TMC Arts, The Music Center's programming engine — has been a remarkable one, with an array of fearless, dynamic contemporary and classical performances that could be seen only at The Music Center. We conclude the current season on an enormous high with two back-to-back weekends featuring the talents of the internationally renowned ballet company, The Royal Ballet. It is an honor to present The Royal Ballet — a company that has not been seen in Los Angeles for more than two decades — and to witness some of the ballet world’s top stars dance Kenneth MacMillan’s historically powerful Mayerling during the first part of the company’s Los Angeles return. We will have a second opportunity to experience The Royal Ballet and to see the dancers morph their classical sensibilities into two nights of contemporary performances as they join their resident choreographer Wayne McGregor and his company, Company Wayne McGregor, next weekend on July 12 and 13 with Adès & McGregor: A Dance Collaboration. What a wonderful way to kick off the summer with two “sizzling” dance engagements at The Music Center! A signature work of The Royal Ballet, Mayerling expands and deepens the genre of narrative classical ballet. These performances are a true testament to the strength and emotional power of the dancers. The Royal Ballet shows us how dancers can extend beyond challenging choreography to deliver performances of passionate intensity not often experienced in ballet. At the same time, Mayerling is technically challenging: MacMillan is known for his extraordinarily beautiful, albeit difficult pas de deux, as well as the creation of some of the most demanding, complex male roles in the ballet canon. Although classical in nature, The Royal Ballet’s performance seems to rip the storyline from today’s headlines instead of the 19 th century, making Mayerling’s exploration of the human condition relevant to our times. I hope you enjoy the performance and that you will join us next weekend as the LA Phil returns to The Music Center’s Dorothy Chandler Pavilion for the first time since its move to The Music Center's Walt Disney Concert Hall for our co-presentation of Adès & McGregor: A Dance Collaboration, featuring two dance world premieres. Our 2019/2020 dance season starts on October 24, 2019, as the Mariinsky Ballet returns to The Music Center with George Balanchine’s Jewels, acknowledged as the first great abstract work of classical ballet. Our upcoming season is a visionary, masterful, daring one with something for everyone, from Tanztheater Wuppertal Pina Bausch and the return of Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater, to the debut performance at The Music Center of Teatro alla Scala Ballet Company. I hope you will join me on a journey that will showcase a range of performances from artistic heritage to modern expression. More information and season subscriptions can be found at musiccenter.org As always, I value your support and welcome your ideas. Warmly,

RACHEL S. MOORE PRESIDENT AND CEO THE MUSIC CENTER

SYNOPSIS ACT I Crown Prince Rudolf of Austria-Hungary is emotionally unstable and haunted by his obsession with death. For political reasons, he is forced to marry Princess Stephanie. At the celebratory ball, he behaves badly towards her, flirting with Princess Louise. Marie Larisch tries to revive her affair with Rudolf. He visits his mother, the Empress, in her apartments and attempts to engage her sympathies. He then forces himself on Stephanie, terrifying her with a revolver. ACT II A visit to a notorious tavern is interrupted by a police raid. Mitzi Caspar betrays Rudolf’s presence to the Prime Minister. Marie Larisch introduces him to a new mistress, Mary Vetsera, a young woman who shares his morbid fascination. Marie Larisch encourages the relationship on both sides, conveying a letter from Mary to Rudolf at a birthday party for the Emperor. Rudolf and Mary meet in secret. ACT III At a shoot in the countryside, Rudolf kills a courtier and almost wounds the Emperor. Back in his apartments, Rudolf asks Mary to die with him. At the hunting lodge Mayerling, Rudolf is drinking with friends. When they leave, Mary arrives. She and Rudolf form a suicide pact. They make love before Rudolf shoots first Mary and then himself. The royal family covers up the tragedy.

MESSAGE FROM THE COMPANY We are delighted to return to Los Angeles for the first time in 24 years with two programmes here at The Music Center that celebrate the vitality and virtuosity of dancers with The Royal Ballet and Company Wayne McGregor. Our visit includes the electrically charged anticipation of two world premieres. The first programme we present is Mayerling by Kenneth MacMillan, Principal Choreographer of The Royal Ballet and a visionary creative of 20 th-century ballet. His legacy is contrasted with the compelling work of our current Resident Choreographer Wayne McGregor in an unprecedented collaboration with two other forces of the contemporary arts scene, composer-conductor Thomas Adès and artist Tacita Dean. MacMillan’s thrilling 1978 masterpiece Mayerling created one of the most demanding and rewarding roles in the repertory for a male dancer with the complex character of Prince Rudolf. With an emotionally-charged score by Franz Liszt and period designs by Nicholas Georgiadis, Rudolf’s dissipated decline is set brilliantly against the crumbling, oppressive Austro-Hungarian court, a tragedy of both personal and political proportions. We convey special thanks to Aud Jebsen for her incredibly generous support of the 2018/19 Royal Ballet Season, and to Susan A. Olde OBE for her vision and philanthropy towards The Royal Ballet tour to Los Angeles. We extend enormous gratitude to Rachel Moore and her team at The Music Center. I would like to give particular thanks to the American Friends of Covent Garden, John McGinn and Cary Davis, Beth Madison, Nancy Peck Green, Sherry and Michael Guthrie, John G. Turner and Jerry G. Fischer, and Alan G. Levin. And my thanks also to our most loyal Royal Ballet supporters in the United Kingdom who have made this tour possible: Ian and Helen Andrews, David Campain, Deborah Cowles, Dr. Gwen Lewis and Dr. Jonathan Holliday, Lady Pitman, Rebecca Rogers, Kristina Rogge, Janine Roxborough Bunce, Eric Tomsett, Adrienne Waterfield, and Peter Harrison and Fiona Willis.

Kevin O'Hare Director, The Royal Ballet

THE ROYAL BALLET ON TOUR KENNETH MACMILLAN CHOREOGRAPHER Kenneth MacMillan was born in Dunfermline and discovered ballet while evacuated in Rutford during World War II. At age 15, he forged a letter from his father to Ninette de Valois, requesting an audition. He joined Sadler’s Wells School on a full scholarship, later entering the Company. He created his first major work, Danses concertantes, in 1955 and went on to become one of the world’s leading choreographers. His ballets are distinguished by their penetrating psychological insight and expressive use of classical language. These qualities are demonstrated in his many works for The Royal Ballet, which include Romeo and Juliet, Gloria, Manon, Mayerling and Requiem. He was Director of The Royal Ballet from 1970–1977 and Principal Choreographer from 1977–1992. Positions away from the Company included Director of Deutsche Oper Ballet Berlin (1966–1969) and Associate Director of American Ballet Theatre (1984–1990). He continued to create masterpieces throughout his life, including The Prince of the Pagodas (1989) and his last work The Judas Tree in 1992. He died backstage at the Royal Opera House during a revival of Mayerling. KEVIN O’HARE DIRECTOR OF THE ROYAL BALLET Born in Yorkshire, Kevin O'Hare trained at The Royal Ballet School and, through an exchange programme at Royal Danish Ballet. On graduating he joined Sadler’s Wells Royal Ballet and was promoted to Principal in 1990, the year the company became Birmingham Royal Ballet. Performing across the UK and worldwide, he danced all the leading classical roles including Siegfried, Florimund, Albrecht and Romeo and major works by Ashton, Balanchine, Cranko, MacMillan, Van Manen, Tharp and Tudor. He worked with Ashton, De Valois, MacMillan, Bintley and Wright, among others, creating many roles. He retired from dancing in 2000 and trained in company management at the Royal Shakespeare Company. He returned to the Birmingham Royal Ballet as Company Manager in 2001 and joined The Royal Ballet as Company Manager in 2004. He was appointed Administrative Director in 2009 and Director in 2012. He is a governor of The Royal Ballet School and on the board of Northern Ballet and the Royal Academy of Dance. In 2014 he was awarded an honorary doctorate from the University of Hull. He was appointed a CBE in 2018. KOEN KESSELS MUSIC DIRECTOR Music Director of The Royal Ballet since September 2015, Koen Kessels has also been Music Director of Birmingham Royal Ballet since 2010. He made his Royal Ballet debut in 2008, conducting ballets including The Nutcracker, Giselle and the world premieres of Raven Girl, Untouchable, Woolf Works, Strapless and Frankenstein. He appears regularly with Paris Opéra and has conducted for companies including NYCB, La Monnaie, Brussels, Théâtre du Capitole de Toulouse, Dutch National Ballet, Vienna State Opera, Teatro dell’Opera di Roma, Teatro Real, Madrid, Opera Vlaanderen and New National Theatre, Tokyo. His opera repertory includes Mozart, Verdi, Puccini and Britten, Saariaho’s L’Amour de loin (Antwerp) and Hosokawa’s Hanjo (Brussels). He is artistic director of HERMESensemble and Inspiratum, on the artistic direction team at the Royal Conservatory of Antwerp and an honorary professor at the University of Birmingham. CHRISTOPHER SAUNDERS REHEARSAL DIRECTOR AND PRINCIPAL CHARACTER ARTIST Born in Gosport, Christopher Saunders trained with Joan Stevenson. He made his professional debut at age nine in Gypsy with Angela Lansbury. In 1975, he joined The Royal Ballet School, graduating into the Company in 1983. He was promoted to Soloist in 1991, and Principal Character Artist in 1997. He was appointed Ballet Master in 2001 and Rehearsal Director in 2017. His repertory includes Don Quixote, Lord Capulet, Drosselmeyer, Von Rothbart, Monsieur G.M., Kostcheï and Tsar (Anastasia). He created roles in Tombeaux, Love’s Fool, The Seven Deadly Sins and Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland. Since becoming Ballet Master, he has rehearsed and staged many of the ballets in the Company’s repertory. He has also staged productions for ballet companies in Europe, Japan and the USA.

CENTER DANCE ARTS AND ME This is the second of a series of notes from Center Dance Arts (CDA) members. Do you know the difference between an arabesque and a cabriole? I don’t. So, you might ask, “Why does this philistine support Center Dance Arts (CDA)?” The answer is simple: I love to watch dance — its grace and beauty, the fluidity of its gravity-defying leaps and the marriage of music and muscle. It is mesmerizing, and when it is performed at The Music Center by world class dance companies like The Royal Ballet, it is absolutely thrilling. The often outrageously dressed youngish audience is not often what you’ll see at other types of performances. Here, rules are to be broken, chances taken and audiences appreciated. And there is no better way to support dance in Los Angeles than by joining CDA. The perks are great (special ticket exchange process, members-only salons) and the members are friendly, reflecting the openness of this unique art form. So join me as a CDA member, and together we’ll learn all about arabesques, cabrioles and perhaps even an entrechat or two. Bradley Tabach-Bank Center Dance Arts Board Member Join the movement.
