ISSUE05/

D I T O R S N O T E S

I loved working on this magazine and even though this is only the fifth issue, I know it’s time to say goodbye. The Movie Guyde has been my way of expressing my love for pop culture without the constraints of a media house or editor I can make mistakes and I can say whatever I want to say. Unfortunately this journey has come to an end, but hopefully this gives me an opportunity to move onto something else Maybe The Movie Guyde will return in some shape or form in the future Since I started with this magazine, I got to talk to some amazing people and it’s all because we all share a love for film, art and pop culture And while this may seem like goodbye, it’s actually goodbye for now. Issue 5 might be the last time you get read The Movie Guyde, but it’s not the last you’ll see The Movie Guy I really hope you will enjoy this issue and that it can inspire you or at the very least make you smile Till we meet again. Your friend, The Movie Guy.

THEMOSTANTICIPATEDMOVIES STILLTOCOMETHISYEAR

Deadpool & Wolverine

It seems like the MCU is back. The most recent trailer should really get you pumped up for what might be the biggest superhero crossover movie since Avengers: Endgame and Spider-Man: No Way Home.

Joker: Folie à Deux

This movie looks like it might be another masterpiece The first film redefined the comic book movie genre and this one seems like it will do the same. This will be one of the first musical comic book movies and it stars Lady Gaga, I’m just glad I’m here for it

Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga

I have a feeling this might be the best action movie of 2024, maybe even the decade. So far Furiosa has received raving reviews, I can’t wait to go watch it myself Mad Max: Fury Road is one of my all-time favourite action movies, but I heard this one is a little different

Gladiator II

We don’t know much about this movie yet The first film is a classic and a movie that you can always go back to. I’m excited because of the stellar cast, which includes: Paul Mescal, Denzel Washington, Pedro Pascal, Joseph Quinn, Fred Hechinger, Connie Nielsen, and Derek Jacob

Inside Out 2

Inside Out is on of my favourite animated films. The trailer for this one looks amazing and I can’t wait to meet all the new emotions. I already have my tissues ready, because I know I’m going to bawl my eyes out.

Bad Boys: Ride or Die

After Bad Boys For Life, I’m extremely hyped to see what Will and Martin will give us next. I’ve been on the Bad Boys ride since I was just a toddler and it’s about time we got to see these two cops again

/ 05

1. Oppenheimer

The movie that made me fall in love with cinema again Christopher Nolan made the best movie I’ve ever seen out of a story that most people didn’t even care for.

2 Avengers: Infinity War and Endgame

I thought the first Avengers was great, but nothing can top this. Infinity War and Endgame share this spot, because it’s basically one long movie.

3 The Lion King

My favorite animated movie of all-time and also one of my favorite childhood memories I still have the Special Edition on VHS

4 Dune: Part Two

The most recent movie on my list and it definitely deserves its place among the greatest of all-time It is one of the most beautiful movies I’ve ever seen

5 E T

I don’t know what it is about this movie, but it always stuck with me. I haven’t rewatched it a lot, but I just love it

6. Ferris Bueller’s Day Off

This movie is so good that I still can’t stop talking about it In my opinion this is the best film to come from John Hughes

7. The Avengers

Call me crazy for having this on my list, but I love the MCU This movie made us believe in the impossible - a shared cinematic universe.

8 Dumb and Dumber

Jim Carey will always be one of my favourite actors. Dumb and Dumber is one of those movies I’ve watched in every stage of my life.

9 The Breakfast Club

I have a thing for 80s movies. Breakfast Club is one of those movies that everyone has to watch at least once It is iconic and awesome

10 Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back

A New Hope might’ve started it all, but there’s no denying that Empire is far superior to all Star Wars movies It is one of those movies with an unforgettable twist.

THE MOVIE GUY THE MOVIE GUY WENT TO COMIC WENT TO COMIC CON CAPE TOWN CON CAPE TOWN

It was Comic Con Cape Town time again and The Movie Guy had so much fun living his geekdream life

Comic Con Cape Town 2023 was amazing, but it needed something… It needed to be bigger. The organisers obviously didn’t know how many of us wanted to be there And this year it was bigger and better.

I was lucky enough to go and trust me you can’t miss out on it next year This year they officially introduced KidsCon There was a dedicated area for the kids with a bunch of activities and a special curated Toys “R” Us shopping experience I even got to meet Hello Kitty and a Lego man.

CCCT was extended to be a 5-day event, with Monday, 29 April and Tuesday, 30 April being specially themed days.

On the Monday we dove into the spooky side of geek culture. The convention floor was transformed into a horror haven There were a variety of activities to take part in, including: a horror movie screening, murder mystery games, escape rooms, prosthetic and make-up tutorials, horror-themed panel discussions and much more.

On Tuesday they had the biggest family pajama party Ackermans teamed up with CCCT for something special. There was PJ cosplay, a dance party with DJ Elliot, a family quiz event and so much more.

The panels by the One Piece cast, Boy Kills World cast, LeslieAnn Brandt, Sean Gunn, and Veronica Taylor were all extra special. The gaming hall allowed me to relive my childhood with some amazing games

I can’t wait for Comic Con Africa later this year.

FEATURED MOVIE: THE FALL GUY

Ryan Gosling and Emily Blunt are one of the best onscreen duos in a long time.

The Fall Guy is awesome I was hyped before I entered the theater and still excited after I left It’s a fun movie that never pretends to be anything other than that It was made for our entertainment and exceeds at that.

David Leitch usually takes simple stories and turn them into these huge blockbusters He did it with John Wick and Bullet Train and once again he did it with The Fall Guy This movie looks simple on paper, but on screen it is wonderful whirlwind of extreme fun

My main take away is that this movie is a love letter to all stunt performers. Hollywood so often forget to give the stunt people the credit they deserve Most action movies wouldn’t even have existed if it weren’t for them and no, actors don’t do most of their own stunts. This just proves that the Oscars need a stunt category The movie also broke the record for the most barrel rolls in a car

The performances are amazing as well, Ryan Gosling and Emily Blunt have amazing chemistry They are the Romeo and Juliet couple I never knew we needed.

Aaron Taylor-Johnson is hilarious and I wished he did more roles like this The rest of the cast were amazing as well, it’s great to see Hannah Waddingham get the recognition she deserves. I applaud David Leitch’s direction, I might even say this is his best film yet I had so much fun during this whole movie and I think for now this movie is somewhere in my top 5 for 2024. It’s easy to forget that the film is loosely based on TV show from the 1980s but it does reference it. The action sequences are amazing, they really put an emphasis on practical effects and stunt work. There’s this one really cool action set-piece through the streets of Sydney, Australia that just blows my mind. If you ’ re an action movie fan, then you should definitely go check this out

There are also a bunch of really cool cameos, and don’t leave your seat too early because there is a mid-credits scene you need to wait for This movie is a must-watch and if you can see it in IMAX the it’ll be even better I can’t wait to re-watch it

This movie is extra special and that’s simply because you can see how much fun Ryan Gosling and Emily Blunt had with their roles. They bring so much life and laughter to this awesome movie I highly recommend that everyone go check it out.

MEET MEET MEET BARRY DE KLERK BARRY DE KLERK BARRY DE KLERK

From journalist to film content creator

It kind of feels weird that I’m interviewing myself for the last edition of The Movie Guyde, but at the same time it just feels right

I started this online magazine to provide a platform for creators, creatives, artists, actors, filmmakers, and writers to share their lives with others I wanted to give my audience an insight into the minds of these amazing people. Unfortunately I won’t be able to continue doing this That’s why for one last time I want to introduce you to someone quite peculiar, a misfit if you will. The one-and-only, Movie Guy, Barry de Klerk Yes, that’s how I usually introduce myself when I’m about to write a whole feature article about myself or when I’m confident enough to get up onto a stage So now is your chance to get to know a few things about me that you might not have known before. I didn’t write all these question myself

10 /

I’m just a humble guy who doesn’t enjoy talking about himself. Just kidding, I’m just a guy who loves movies. Ever since I can remember I had this deep love for movies and TV shows. As a kid I was sickly, so on the days I stayed from school all I had was M-Net and a few VHS tapes to keep me busy. So movies like The Lion King, and recordings of Aladdin were played over and over again And the older I got the more I fell in love with the art of filmmaking and writing. I hope I get to write a huge blockbuster someday or at least get to experience making one. I have a first draft script ready.

What’s the one movie that influences you the most?

It has to be The Lion King Out of all the movies I watched as a kid, this one stuck with me the most. Now I know I can’t be an animator, because I suck at drawing I just hope I get write or make something as impactful as The Lion King. A story that will still be relevant for generations to come And yes, I know the movie was based on Hamlet.

Why did you start creating content?

I’ve been a journalist for almost 10 years now and I’ve always wanted to tell stories I started with poetry and that led me to journalism I never wanted to write about politics or heartbreaking crimes and accidents. I wanted to share the beautiful side of life with people and movies seemed like a good start. I started writing movie reviews for a local newspaper, but I knew I could do more I branched out and started my own movie blog which eventually became The Movie Guy. I knew I needed to do more, at the time I was producing live videos for the company I worked for. I was always behind the camera and didn’t have the confidence to go in front of it It took some time to make the move and right before the pandemic I recorded two YouTube videos. It wasn’t until 2022 that I started posting more on YouTube, Instagram and TikTok. I realised no one in Namibia was doing it, so maybe I could start something new And I haven’t looked back since, i just hope my audience keeps growing.

Where do you want to go next?

Well I first want to establish myself as real content creator and film “critic”. If that’s successful then I hope to get a few people to read my script I also hope I get to host special curated movie events someday. Kind of like movie screenings but with something special for the audience

First movie you watched in cinema?

Bringing Down The House with Steve Martin and Queen Latifah

How much time do you spend creating content?

40-50 hours per week It’s basically a fulltime job And that doesn’t account for all the movies and TV shows I need to watch. Also I help create content for other people as well.

Who are you biggest influences?

My dad’s a preacher, so he is basically a storyteller My mum is the funniest person I know, so she influences me in that way. When it comes to films, I think Steven Spielberg and John Hughes has had a great influence on me since childhood Right now James Gunn and Christopher Nolan are my favourite storytellers/filmmakers.

I really love doing this I just wish I could earn money from it If this work payed the bills, then I will be the happiest and most blessed guy alive Do you love what you do?
