IT'S TRUE, IT'S TRUE, COMIC CON COMIC CON AFRICA IS BACK! AFRICA IS BACK!

The biggest pop culture event on African soil is back and this time it's bigger and better than before. Are you ready?

This year’s con will take place from 22 to 25 September at the Johannesburg Expo Centre in NASREC. The same place as last year, but this time the convention is going to be bigger in size. This is also the first time that South Africa hosts two Comic Cons in a single year when the event hit the shores of Cape Town in April So, what’s going to set this year’s event apart? We’ll get to that to that shortly

If you are geek for pop culture, movies, TV, anime, gaming, tech and having fun then this is event is designed to boost your dopamine You can expect everything from the past few cons to return, including the Artist Alley, Cosplay, StreamerCon, StreetCon, KidsCon and so much more.

This year we will see a bunch of celebrities on the main stage. And they won’t only be from movies and TV, but also gaming. I will share a video to talk about all the special guests at this year’s con Just be ready to have your minds blown

This year there will be a lot more activities to keep you busy over the four days There will be a bunch of free to play gaming competitions and open spaces where you can connect with fellow geeks and those who share your love for certain fandoms The organisers also listened to your feedback and promised that this year’s convention will flow better. They want to cap overcrowding, so only a certain number of tickets will be sold for each day. So if you don’t like big crowds, then there might just be a solution for you

FEATURED MOVIE: OPPENHEIMER

If you want a heart-wrenching, beautifully executed, science and politics driven film, then Christopher Nolan has the answer for you.

Oppenheimer is the kind of movie that brings new life to cinema It's an original take on the life of someone who changed the world I've always liked biopics, but this film is a spectacle It's a drama turned into a blockbuster

I think it's fair to say that this is the best movie of the year, and there's nothing else that can top it

After a bunch of flops at the box office by some big blockbusters I was weary to go back to the cinema I took a leap of faith and went to watch Oppenheimer

And it made me fall back in love with cinema

Unfortunately I couldn't watch it on IMAX, but seeing it in theater is what makes it more than just a movie - it's an experience I can't get this movie out of my mind I want to watch it over and over again Christopher Nolan has always been one of my favourite filmmakers and now he has cemented himself on my Mount Rushmore of directors. The story of Oppenheimer is a unique one. This movie gave me a better look at history than any other ever has J Robert Oppenheimer is the protagonist in the movie, but in his own life he was the antagonist A man who was remembered for his creation, but not his life And this movie showcases his life and all that he had to go through.

In conclusion this movie was brilliant and beautifully executed I loved it and that's why it's my featured film You can read the review in my Double Feature Review

The trinity test was beautifully depicted, it's hard to believe it isn't computer generated. Practical effects still does the job.

Cillian Murphy is phenomenal in the role of J Robert Oppenheimer He brings layers to the character

OPPENHEIMER BARBIE

RATING: RATING:

Barbie might not be for everyone, but trust me it's a really good time. This movie does exactly what you think it would, but better Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling are the perfect Barbie and Ken - they were born for these roles It's a fun great time all through the movie. Some might say it's a little preachy at times, but that doesn't take away from the message and the fun

"Movie of the Year"

-The Movie Guy

I don't event need a full review to tell you how beautiful this film is. It is one of the greatest movies I've ever watched Christopher Nolan took the life of J Robert Oppenheimer and gave us a film that resonates with millions The great cinematography, amazing practical effects and wonderful casts makes this a must-watch

HERE'S THE HERE'S THE HERE'S THE PHENOMENAL IXA PHENOMENAL IXA PHENOMENAL IXA

Afrikaans music as a whole changed when Ixa came onto the scene

The Afrikaans rapper has inspired a new generation of Afrikaans youth and he is just getting started

He recently relocated from Walvis Bay to Windhoek to be closer to his fans and to broaden his goals and dreams

Ixa, known for his hit songs Volkslied, Ouma-Oupa Kind, My Mense and many others has set his sights on doing more than just music

He wants to take a shot at drama and theater, and Windhoek will be his stage

While his career might be important, he is a family man first and foremost He says they are still adapting to their life in Windhoek, but it's going better than expected He says meeting fans on the street fuels his passion to continue inspiring people through music and motivational quotes. Personally, he is inspired by a lot, but writing about his people is what makes it all worth it

10/
Hopefully now that I'm in Windhoek, I can expand more artistically.

Howdoyoubalanceyourworkandlife?

My wife, she's my favourite teacher Without her I probably would've neglected a lot of in my personal life She keeps reminding me that apart from being an idol for most, I am also a father and a husband They say, "of all the home remedies, a good wife is best " And they are spot on

Whatisyourartisticprocess?

I draw inspiration from everywhere Artists usually write lyrics first, and then the beat is made after It can be the other way around too The artist hears the beat and thinks of something that goes with it and then they write the lyrics. Usually the artist takes the lyrics to the producer and then the producer gives them beat samples As for me, I do both Some of my songs were written after hearing the beat, some before, and I always write about something that happened to me or to someone close

Whataresomeofthechallengesyoufaceas anartist?Andsomeofthetriumphs?

I didn't have much of a platform to showcase my talent in Walvis Bay The opportunities were few, I had to create my own platform by performing on street corners with my own resources and for free It wasn't long until other towns noticed and inquired about my services The rewarding moment of being here in Windhoek now, is that I don't have to let my daughter miss school every other Friday because we have to travel +-800km for my career

Whatdoyouwantyourlegacytobe?

Social media is a great help, because I get to engage with my audience on a daily basis. I get a lot of notifications, but I try to reply to everything. And it gives me a chance to get to know people on a personal level

I would like to be known as the musician who not only inspired musicians, but who gave hope through his music to people in general I want them to make a valiant effort to better their lives with the talents they were born with. With the local music scene, I just hope they realize that for years I have spoken truth to power and challenged the existing state of affairs Protest and resistance has been common elements in my music, evoking the fight for racial equality and the socio-economic conditions that shaped the lives of many Coloured people.

Doyouhaveanyupcomingprojects?

We are currently in negotiations with organisers, but nothing concrete yet Hopefully I'll already have new music at my next gig A week before an event I usually rehearse my songs and go through the appreciation messages I receive online I do this to remind me that it's not about me but about the people. And on the day of the event I pray.... Not to be flawless on stage but to at least change the mindset of one person in a positive way at the event

Adviceforyoungandupcomingartists?

Pray for patience, because this road is nothing like you see on TV. it's tough and lonely with no guarantees If you really want to make a difference in the lives of others, God will give you the strength to endure the journey

BEST CINEMA SNACKS & DRINKS

Popcorn or Chips? Coke or Slushie? Those are the age-old questions we need to answer when going to the movie theater I asked and you answered Here are the best cinema snacks and drinks according to you

SNACKS DRINKS

5. Chips or Crisps – 10%

Apparently some people prefer something crunchy during their movies I love a fried potato, but chewing it can get loud during a movie The benefit is, it doesn’t get stuck in your teeth like a popcorn kernels, but it’s a lot more distracting

4 Soft or Hard Candy – 13%

I love myself some Jelly Tots when I’m watching a movie and it seems other people like it too This can be anything from a chewy toffee or a lollipop you can suck on. I prefer something soft, because chewing helps me focus.

3 Chocolate – 20%

Chocolate can heal a world of hurt If a movie is bad, then chocolate can cover the taste it leaves in your mouth It’s also a great dessert after the salty popcorn Alternatively, you can mix your M&M’s or Smarties with the popcorn to make the ultimate snack I never go to the theater without chocolate

2 Biltong and Droëwors – 27%

My personal and apparently the personal favourite of many South Africans and Namibians, even if we have to sneak it in. This salty meaty snack is easily the best man-made thing ever It gives you the protein and energy boost you need If you haven’t tried it yet, then you ’ re missing out on something spectacular

1 Popcorn – 40%

It’s no secret that popcorn is the number 1 movie theater snack And no one can make it better than a cinema concession stand. The salty buttery flavour complemented with a coke or slushy is what makes going to the cinema special. I get nostalgic when I have the two together It always reminds me of my first movie theater experience 20 years ago While I might not be a big popcorn fan, there’s no denying how special it is while watching a big blockbuster film

4. Alcohol 12%

I was a bit surprised to see that alcohol wasn’t in the top three, but then I realized that most movie theaters don’t even serve alcohol And I guess a large chunk of the audience is still too young to enjoy a beer or glass of wine I wouldn’t mind some beer while watching Oppenheimer

3 Water 17%

You need to hydrate. I usually have a bottle of water and my drink at the movies. I need those 8 cups a day. It’s also great if you don’t want something sweet to drink during the film, which obviously also makes water the healthier option

2 Slushie 21%

I heard a rumour that some theaters don’t sell slushies? Now I’m not much of a slushie guy, but I get why people like this frozen sweet drink Now if they can combine coke with a slushie, then you’ll get my attention. Slushies are great, especially during the warmer months.

1 Soft Drinks/Soda 50%

Once again to no surprise, the soft drink comes out on top And in my case, it’s Coke There’s nothing better than an ice-cold Coke to complement the buttery popcorn while enjoying a huge US$200-billion movie at your local theater There’s just so much joy in this combination, and funny enough it works at home, but not as good.

ISTANDWITHTHEWRITERS ANDACTORS

I'm not ashamed to take my stance alongside the writers and actors during their respective strikes.

As someone who wants to be part of their world someday, I get where they're coming from The Writers of Guild of America and the Screen Actors Guild are striking for good reasons, and there is no way I can just stand back and support them The writers have been on strike for more than 100 days, while the actors have been striking for over a month now.

The strikes started after talks with studio representatives broke down. The writers and actors are striking for better job security. With the introduction of AI in various mediums of media, these people want to ensure that their futures are secured

They are also striking for better wages Contrary to popular belief, most writers and actors aren't millionaires

Some of them barely make minimum wage And now certain studios want to further take advantage of what they bring to table

Studios want to use AI to drive their profits, instead of investing in the people who are in the field doing the work AI might be convenient but it can never replicate the human touch So while the strikes might be shutting Hollywood down, it is absolutely necessary

Support the writers and the actors, because without them we will be looking at AI-generated Ads all day.
