The Movie Guyde has always been a dream of mine, but I just came up with the name - like three days before publishing The Movie Guyde isn't just a guide to awesome movies, TV shows and entertainment. It is a 10 year old dream in magazine form. It is a testimony of years of work and it is finally here. The purpose of the magazine is to share my love for movies, TV, comics, Pop Culture and all the awesome stuff out there. It is about the stuff that makes us happy and that keeps us entertained for days on end It is a first for Namibia and that's why there will be a special focus on local movies, actors, actresses, filmmakers and film-enthusiasts It is my way to talk about the things I love and to shine light on those doing great things Pop Culture is a shared love for something that unites us when the world gets a little crazy.

THE MOVIE GUY GOES TO COMIC CON CAPE TOWN

The Movie Guy is heading to the Mother City's biggest pop culture event, Comic Con Cape Town in April - and he is going to need your help.

Okay… So I’m going to Comic Con Cape Town in April and I’m going to need your help. Africa’s biggest pop culture event is slowly moving up to the Mother City’s shores and I’ll be there to witness it. Super awesome, I know but here’s the thing – I can’t do it alone. Here is where the help comes in, in case you were wondering I need to raise funds to attend the event, so I’m calling on friends, family, stangers, Vulcans, droids, other worldly beings and the Elves of Middle-Earth to sponsor me. You can give me a $5 or a $1000 whatever the wizards compel you to give It is all for a good cause and will be highly appreciated I’m guessing you ’ re waiting on reason why you should sponsor me; well first of all it will be dream come true for 9-year old Barry, who was bullied for being different And secondly, I want to once again be one of the journalists who get to cover such a great event.

It is an honour that I keep getting invited to these once in a lifetime events over and over again It kind of seems like the organisers see something in me Anyway, being able to work as journalist at this event will be a career milestone and I can only do it with the right help.

I truly trust that there will be people who can sponsor me If I could fund this trip myself then I would have, but unfortunately years of struggling as freelance reporter doesn’t allow me to. And it’s not like I haven’t tried doing something else This isn’t supposed to be some sad story, just me hoping that someone will find it in their heart to help.

I truly believe that Comic Con Cape Town will open doors for me, and God knows I need some open doors So Do you have any other questions? Oh… What is Comic Con Cape Town? Well I posted something about that earlier, but here’s a link. In short it is a convention that celebrates movies, comics, artists, illustrators and all things pop culture, so it’s right in my wheelhouse. I can go on and on about what a great event it will be in one of the greatest citi in the world. So hang tight over the next few weeks as I will share more on the convention If you are able to sponsor me, then please send me an email Alternatively, you can contact me on social media or leave a comment here If you want me to send you a breakdown of my expenses, then I will gladly do so. Like I said any sponsorship will help, because I need all the help I can get I am building a career and I am building a brand It doesn’t just take a village to raise a child; it also takes a village to build a dream.

FEATURED MOVIE: CREED III

What a perfect ending to one of the greatest trilogies of the last decade. Creed III does a great job in showing us that there are still plenty of original stories to be told

Michael B Jordan's directoral debut is phenomenal and his acting is spot on as always Jonathan Majors once again shines in this movie, as he does in everything else he stars in The supporting cast does a brilliant job in bringing this story to life

The reason Creed III is this month's featured movie is because it stood out more than any other film currently in theatres. And it is about to start a whole new franchise on its own There are three possible projects based on these movies in development and one project is an anime

The Creed movies does an excellent job in distinguishing itself from the larger Rocky-franchise, which is a good thing but not everyone might agree It brings a new layer to the whole franchise and allows for more stories to be told Would I love to see Sylvester Stallone return as Rocky in the next Creed?

Definitely

Jonathan Majors is the breakout star, just as he is the breakout star in Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania. There is no telling what this wonderful actor will achieve next We are just glad to be here and to witness the rise of Hollywood's next A-Lister

OPERATION FORTUNE

RATING:

This movie is just a fun time It's filled with some great action sequences and some really funny moments. It is predictable at times, but who cares because you get to see Jason Statham fight bad guys Other than that Aubrey Plaza is brilliant in this film. It might not be Guy Ritchie's greatest outing, but it is certainly something I like enough to re-watch in a few year

COCAINE BEAR

RATING:

What can I say about this movie, accept that it is a real trip This movie is exactly what its title implies, a bear who goes on a rampage after getting into some cocaine. Is it a masterpiece? No, but it doesn't need to be. It is just a fun-filled crazy adventure It is purely for entertainment, even though it has bunch of characters that are unnecessary. All-in-all, it's my kind of entertainment

MEET MEET MEET

CLAUDINE DE GROOT CLAUDINE DE GROOT CLAUDINE DE GROOT

Local stars bring life to local movies and they do not always get the recognition they deserve. Each month we will feature a local actor, filmmaker, entertainer, artist and all around awesome person and introduce them to The Movie Guyde's audience

This week we meet actress, Claudine de Groot She received critical acclaim for her debut role in the movie, Hairareb

We get to know more about who she is when the cameras are not rolling and where she grew up.

Claudine has an exciting future and she took time out of her schedule to talk to us and tell her story

The 32-year-old actress is more than just that She started her career as a model and eventually worked her way into music videos.

And then her breakthrough came, a moment that she will never forget. It shaped who she is today

From Beauty Therapist to leading actress.

10 /

Who is Claudine de Groot?

I grew up in Rehoboth and finished my school career at Dr. Lemmer Secondary School. I then went to Shadonai Beauty School and got an international diploma in Beauty Therapy I come from a talented family and I wanted to do more. I started to do modelling and I was featured in advertisements and I did some product promotions. I also did pageatry and was in the top 30 for Miss Namibia 2013. I knew I wanted more and this let me to music videos where I gained confidence in front of the camera

What is your favourite part of being an actress?

Hearing "lights, camera, action". It brings me into my zone Meeting my co-actors and learning from them is also very special. At the end of each production it's like I have new family members I am extremely happy when I'm on set. It is the best when I connect with the character and get into that character

How was your time on the Hairareb set?

It was my first ever movie. The day I got selected for the leading role was the best day of my life I was nervous as I had never done films or theatre before And I ended up having the best experience I was blessed to work with a phenomenal cast and crew. I am thankful for everything I got to learn from them We had one goal and that was to produce a great film. The first two weeks on set was tricky We were on a farm and the electricity kept failing, but we pushed through.

What do you do to relax?

I am committed to my other career as a beauty therapist, which is something I love doing As creative person it is one of my outlets. I also love cooking and I come up with the most insane dishes I keep canvases around, because I love to paint I recently started taking sewing classes as well. I have two dogs, Versace and Kenzo and they take up a lot of my free time. I absolutely love my fur babies and I think I might get one more soon

What is your dream role?

I would loved to do an animated movie

What advice would you give your younger self?

Stop obsessing over deadlines, because God created us all unique and at the end of the day God's timing is always perfect

What advice would you give young actors?

Always be on the lookout for auditions, give it all a shot. Never give up and don't be discouraged if you don't get a callback. Keep trying and keep pushing, you never know what can happen

Can we expect to see you in something soon?

I worked on a movie in November 2022 and it will be out soon Someday I will be at the Oscars representing Namibia.

OSCARS' SUCCESS OSCARS' SUCCESS OSCARS' SUCCESS

The 95th Edition of the Academy Awards took place on 12 March and while the award ceremony was spectacular, it did cause some upset.

Jamie Lee Curtis won the Oscar for Best Supporting Actress for her role in Everything, Everywhere, All at Once. She did a phenomenal job, but fans were hoping for a superhero win

Many thought Angela Bassett would be the winner after she delivered a heartbreaking performance in Black Panther: Wakanda Forever Unfortunately that didn't pan out The good news however is that Michelle Yeoh became the first Asian to win the Best Actress award for her role in Everything, Everywhere, All at Once. And let's be honest, there was no better choice The Best Picture award winner delivered the best actress.

Ke Huy Quan also won for his role in Everything, Everywhere, All at Once. His comeback has been near perfect He became the first Asian to win the Best Supporting Actor Award.

The Brenaissance is far from over, as Bredan Fraser won the Best Actor Oscar for his role in The Whale A much deserved win, even though many thought the Oscar would go to Austin Butler.
