ElementaryStudent Places First in Stock Market Competition

PA Cyber fourthgrader AnnabelReeves cracked the stock market in theFall Semester 2022 StockMarket Competition.She took first place in BeaverCounty and fifth place in the state competitionfor elementary students.

“It was funtodoa bit of trading before Ihavetodo it in real life,”said Annabel. She plans to competeinthe spring semester challenge. Thegame startsevery player with$100,000tobuy stocks and then trade, sell,orbuy additional stocks withthe goal of maximizing their portfolio’s revenue. At the close of the fall competition, Annabelgrew herstarting balance to $106,337.25, with returnpercentageof6.34%.

Atthe start of the game, Annabelwent to her father Matt for guidance,and he taught herone main rule: buy andhold. Shepicked stocks that were doing well in theactualstock market, and she didn’ttouch the game againfor the remaining ten weeks

Last fall, 17 students from PA Cyber’sgifted andSTAR programs participated in the competitions. (STAR is aPA Cyber academicincentive program.) “Trading stocks helps students understand why certainproducts are in demand due to economic growthorinlessdemand duetoeconomicdecline,” said Director of Gifted and TalentedMikeHissam. Annabel is in herfourth year withPACyber.“Ireally like it because Ilike working on thecomputer,” she said. “It’s reallyeasytodoit independently, andIlike being independent.”She is enjoyingher science and social studiesclassesthe most, andshe wantstobe an astronomer someday.
